2023 GENERAL ELECTION

NOVEMBER 7 It has long been the practice of the South Shore Press to evaluate candidates from all parties and offer endorsements based on their individual merit and fitness for office. We conducted an exhaustive process to vet the candidates in November’s county and town elections. We sent out questionnaires, conducted editorial interviews, and published numerous stories about the races.

In the past, we have endorsed both Republicans and Democrats.

However, the unique circumstances the country finds itself in right now and the dire consequences we will face without an imminent course correction make it impossible for the South Shore Press to endorse any of the Democrats this year.

Their reluctance to distance themselves from some of the more extreme and damaging elements of their party and their subsequent receipt of funds and public endorsements from destructive groups like the Working Families Party make it impossible for us to propose any of them.

As such, we hereby recommend that our readers vote for all Republicans on this year’s ballot.

Throughout our lifetime, the people who have controlled the levers of government have had, for the most part, very little impact on our day-to-day lives. Taxes have moved up and down, there have been periodic scandals (on both sides of the aisle), and various projects have had more or less funding depending on which party controls the government from year to year.

But for the most part, our communities have been safe, the law and constitution have been defended and upheld, our schools could be trusted to educate our children, the economy has grown, inflation has been stable, and we could trust that we have all been on the same team pulling toward the same common objective – American security and prosperity. This is quite simply no longer the case.

For the first time in our lifetime, the mechanisms by which our security

and prosperity are managed have been completely upended by elected officials who are choosing to enact policies that make us less safe and that are quickly eroding the economic foundation upon which our prosperity resides. The evidence is right in front of us every day and is so voluminous that many of us are beginning to wonder whether the country we grew up in is gone for good. We fear that without immediate action, it may be.

On virtually every metric used to evaluate how America is doing, things are spiraling out of control.

This is not all happening out of coincidence. Virtually all of these issues are the result of policies being implemented by Democrats in office or, in some instances, by appointed bureaucrats enacting a leftist radical agenda. A quick summary includes:

3) Radical Leftist Ideology Infects Our Public Institutions – Radical ideas that didn’t exist even 10 years ago have suddenly become mainstream and are being forced upon taxpayer-funded institutions, including our schools and military.

Despite clear evidence of the damaging effect of these ideas on our soldier’s readiness and our children’s well-being, the left is undeterred. Average Americans are forced to fear that any public opposition to these policies will have them labeled a racist, transphobe, or “threat to Democracy.” Recently, the justice system is being used to target those who oppose this ideology, and many are being sent to jail.

NOVEMBER 7TH, 2023

1) The geopolitical landscape is quickly devolving into chaos – Russia has engaged in a land war in Ukraine, China is expanding political and economic influence around the globe (including in the Western hemisphere) and is openly threatening to invade Taiwan, and the Middle East is now on the verge of a horrible conflict completely undoing the Abraham Accords established just a few years ago.

Amazingly, American tax dollars are financing much of this conflict.

2) Our Southern Border is Wide Open – Estimates suggest 10+ million illegal immigrants have crossed into America since 2020.

Reports indicate that many of these are escaped criminals, terrorists, and other radicals who wish to commit crimes or harm America from within. The Biden administration openly lies to the public and insists the border is not open. Elected Democrats around America who have previously declared their cities and states to be “sanctuaries” for illegal immigrants are now openly realizing the idiocy of that position as their cities and states get overrun, crime explodes, and public infrastructure is stressed well beyond capacity. This situation is quickly arriving at our front door

4) The Federal Government is Now Running a $2 Trillion Structural Deficit – If you don’t pay attention to budget numbers, it probably is lost on you how catastrophic this situation is. The government is now spending $2 trillion more each year than it is taking in. The national debt is currently $33.66 trillion, almost $260,000 per taxpayer, and is financed by printing money and borrowing it from other countries, particularly China. This is the most significant national security issue we face, and it is entirely self-inflicted.

5) Rule of Law is Being Abandoned – Right out in the open, Democrats call for defunding the police, refuse to close the Southern border where drugs and criminals cross unimpeded, advocate for “bail reform” that restricts local DAs from keeping criminals in jail, and want more illegal immigrants housed in our communities. If you were to create a comprehensive plan to destroy America, this is precisely what it would look like.

6) Inflation is Destroying the Middle Class – The combination of “Covid stimulus” and “Infrastructure” spending has wildly increased the money supply, and this has led to inflation not seen in America since we abandoned the Gold Standard in

the 1970s. This has driven up the price of everything, and any economist will tell you that the easiest way to harm the lower and middle class is to drive up inflation.

When prices go up, the people who own assets get richer. The people who rent assets and spend all of their money on food and fuel get destroyed. This is what is happening. When the imminent recession arrives, things will get much, much worse.

7) Geographic Political Power — New York is dominated by Progressive Liberal Democrats from the urban areas, particularly New York City. Long Island ends up on the wrong end of the deal. We need strong Republican leaders to get our fair share of the resources and fight back against the policies that are detrimental to our suburban communities.

We could go on and on, but suffice it to say that none of this is happening by mistake. Each of these problems is a direct result of liberal policies.

One of these issues happening in isolation would be concerning.

When they are all happening simultaneously, it is a red alert, call-to-action situation that needs to be addressed.

Right now, America needs leadership. We thank any citizen who steps forward and offers his or herself as a candidate to help solve these problems. The South Shore Press strongly urges all of our readers to think carefully about where America is headed. Do you agree with the assessment above?

And if you do, which party do you think is more likely to solve these problems? From our perspective, there is no question. One party is directly creating these problems.

We pray that the other party can win and then has the courage and competence to help America turn things around. The future of our country and the fate of our children depend on it.

ENDORSEMENTS SUFFOLK COUNTY EXECUTIVE

Elected Official Roles Job Descriptions of the Public Offices Up for Election

Edward Romaine

Suffolk’s highest elected office, the county executive, has been held for the last 12 years by Democrat Steve Bellone, who can’t run again thanks to Suffolk’s term limit law, which limits the job to three four-year terms. With the myriad of issues facing Suffolk County–the high cost of living, taxes, crime, illegal immigration, and environmental protection– the South Shore Press believes Brookhaven Supervisor Edward Romaine is the best candidate to address these concerns.

Romaine has been a mainstay in local government for more than 40 years and needs no on-the-job training like his opponent, Dave Calone, who has never held elective office. Despite a vicious negative ad campaign funded by Calone’s benefactors outside of Suffolk, Romaine has made his case that the fiscal responsibility he has demonstrated in Brookhaven is sorely needed in Suffolk after 20 years of Democrat control. He has elevated the town’s bond rating to Triple A, while the Democrats had run the county’s into the ground. He has kept Brookhaven within the statemandated 2% tax cap every year he’s been at the helm and has crafted a strategy to close the town landfill without overburdening homeowners with excessive garbage disposal costs.

Romaine has converted the industrial corridor along the Long Island Expressway in Yaphank into an investment mecca with companies committing $1.86 billion to more than a dozen projects to create thousands of jobs and bolster the tax base. When the so-called environmentalist Democrats in the Hamptons said no, the supervisor brilliantly arranged a deal with Sunrise Wind to run a cable up William Floyd Parkway in exchange for $170 million in payments that will go to parks and other town

and county needs. (It will join a transatlantic cable already running up the parkway that nobody even knows is there).

To make up for the revenue lost when the Yaphank landfill closes, Romaine has put together a plan to turn the facility into a green energy hub, a far-reaching strategy that has earned him the endorsement of the New York League of Conservation Voters, Environmental Voters Forum, and many other groups.

Romaine has also won the endorsement of every law enforcement agency in the county. They are tired of taking the brunt of the procriminal policies of the parties that support his opponent, and are ready, willing, and able to make Suffolk safer under the right leadership.

While Romaine wants to fill unfilled law enforcement positions already funded in the county budget, Calone is saddled with the defund the police mantra of his supporters. His ridiculous call for a 20% county tax cut will invariably affect the police, child protective services, and the other agencies county residents count on to keep them safe.

The Democrats tried to score political points off the Suffolk Legislature’s decision to delay a public vote to create a countywide sewer district and raise the sales tax to generate funds to expand the system. While everyone agrees that we need to solve our wastewater treatment problem, the legislators disagreed with the formula that spends the majority of the money on private cesspools with less going to new sewers.

The next county executive will need the legislature to help create a viable plan going forward and Romaine, being a former legislator himself, will be able to work with both parties on a plan that will receive a Home Rule Message from the county and a bill approved by the Democrat-

controlled state legislature.

With tens of thousands of migrants flooding into New York, Suffolk is on the front line of the battle in keeping the new arrivals from overwhelming local services and overburdening Suffolk taxpayers. By the very nature of him being a Democrat connected to the politicians who brought us this problem– President Biden, Gov. Kathy Hochul, New York Mayor Eric Adams, and the rest of the Progressive Democrats who gave him money–Calone cannot be expected to be on our side, despite what he promises. Romaine has been steadfast on the issue and will have our back when push comes to shove on the relocation of the 120,000-plus immigrants idling in New York City.

Romaine has been at the forefront of the pushback against the state taking over local zoning control to build multi-family housing and has pledged to form a coalition with Suffolk's 10 towns and Nassau Executive Bruce Blakeman, a fellow Republican, to land the region's fair share of the $1.1 trillion in federal infrastructure monies and the state's $4.2 billion environmental bond fund. He’s called for the electrification of the three Long Island Rail Road lines that still use diesel locomotives and agrees that sewer expansion into Suffolk business districts is the key to revitalizing these downtowns.

Given his vast experience in government, position on the key issues, and track record of delivering for the taxpayers both financially and on the matters that concern them the most, the South Shore Press endorses Ed Romaine for Suffolk County Executive.

The position pays $234,124 per year and we’re confident that if Romaine does what he promises, he will earn every penny of it.

EDITORIAL NOTE Be advised that in many races there are other minor party candidates. Unfortunately due to space constraint we are unable to list all of them and we urge you to review and consider your ballot.

The county executive is Suffolk’s chief administrative officer responsible for county departments and managing the operating, community college and capital budgets.

Under the county charter, the executive can approve or veto bills passed by the legislature. The job comes with a four-year term, which is limited to three terms, and pays $234,124 per year.

Suffolk’s 18 lawmakers form a legislative body responsible for enacting laws, approving budgets, and overseeing public services.

It plays an oversight role in public safety, healthcare, education, community development, and other essential programs.

Legislators serve two-year terms with a limit of 12 years, and earn an annual base salary of $100,000.

The Brookhaven Town supervisor is the chief administrative officer for the town, who oversees the various town departments, personnel, and budgets.

Elected town-wide, the supervisor leads the town board, which is responsible for zoning, planning,

and land use decisions, as well as stewardship over Brookhaven’s waterways and natural resources. The supervisor makes $131,000 annually and is limited to three four-year terms.

The Brookhaven highway superintendent is responsible for 3,700 lanemiles of road, including drainage, sidewalks, medians, and intersections, in addition to signage, lighting, drainage, tree trimming and removal, and recharge basin maintenance.

The superintendent, elected town-wide oversees 300 employees in the four-year position, which is limited to three terms. The job pays $130,762 per year.

The Brookhaven receiver of taxes is responsible for collecting residential and commercial property taxes for all levels of local government, including the town, county, schools, and special districts. The town-wide elected official manages online systems where property owners can obtain information and pay their taxes. The position comes with a four-year term

and is limited to three terms.

It pays $112,800 annually.

The Brookhaven Town council members, along with the supervisor, make up the town board.

They are responsible for approving capital and operating budgets, as well as town ordinances and codes. They also function as trustees with authority over town waterways and bay bottoms. They are elected in individual districts to fouryear terms, limited to three, and make $76,742 per year.

The Smithtown Council members approve town ordinances, adopt budgets, manage personnel, and oversee town-wide planning and zoning. They are elected town-wide to four-year terms. Their annual salary is $72,316.

The Smithtown Town Clerk is responsible for recording all vital records and the activities of town government, as well as storing documents that are important to the citizens.

The clerk serves a four-term term and is paid $100,000 annually.

SUFFOLK COUNTY LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT 1

Catherine Stark

The 1st Legislative District presents an open seat following incumbent Al Krupski's decision to run for Southold Town Supervisor. Vying for this seat are Catherine Stark who is running on the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot, and Catherine Kent who is running on the Democrat and Working Families Party lines of the ballot. South Shore Press wholeheartedly endorses Catherine Stark for election to the 1st LD. The choice is obvious when weighing the experience that Stark will bring to the Legislature's horseshoe table over Kent's considerable less experience. Stark, who has logged in over 27 years of experience in Suffolk County government, has a proven ability to work with colleagues on both sides of the political aisle. Case in point: Stark served as Republican Robert Gaffney's

aide when he was elected Suffolk County Executive, and she has been serving as Democrat Al Krupski's chief of staff since he won election to Suffolk County's 1st Legislative District in 2013, until the present time. In both positions, Stark addressed constituent services and intergovernmental relations, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Stark has indepth knowledge of capital and operating budgets - an absolute critical trait since the County has no place to go except up as lawmakers try to dig Suffolk County out of the depths of debt.

Opponent Catherine Kent served a four-year stint as Riverhead Town Councilwoman until 2021, prior to which she was an elementary school teacher for 33 years. Kent formed the Riverhead Downtown

Revitalization Committee and embraced new voices in government, but she falls short of the experience needed to effectively occupy this legislative seat. Perhaps Stark stated it best during her interview with South Shore Press when she said: "I'm the most qualified 'Catherine' in this race with my experience; I'm prepared to hit the ground running because there simply is no time for a learning curve here." Suffolk County is at a critical juncture where hard decisions will have to be made to navigate the County back on a path leading to fiscal stability.

Stark is qualified to work with legislative colleagues to finally begin getting Suffolk back on that track. For these reasons and more, the South Shore Press Editorial Review Board unanimously endorses Stark for 1st District Legislator.

Manny Vilar

Ann Welker

The South Shore Press Editorial Review Board gives Manny Vilar, (who will appear on the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot), its unequivocal endorsement for election to Suffolk County's 2nd Legislative District. Vilar's credentials and wealth of relevant experience make him the perfect candidate to serve the people of Suffolk County and constituents of the 2nd LD. Let's take a brief look at Vilar's credentials and experience: he is a retired New York State Parks Police Senior Sergeant, he is Chairman of the East Hampton Town Republican Committee, and he is the founding president of the Police Benevolent Association of New York State. Vilar says he will make the opioid addiction issue a priority by first funneling more effective education into

the schools, providing greater outreach in communities, and, he recognizes the imperative to provide Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney with the staffing and law enforcement tools needed to get the job done.

Vilar is also acutely aware of the migrant issue in the County and specifically the South Fork, which, during his interview with South Shore Press, he underscored must be placed at the forefront and be addressed sooner rather than later. Vilar recognizes that Suffolk County's workforce under Democrat rule, has been, in his words, "reduced to unsustainable levels," and offers up specific examples to address these inequities that exists in the County. Vilar asserts county employees should be getting jobs versus the county awarding work to outside contractors. He cited

the "epic failures of Suffolk County in the past" to provide CPS with the employees and tools necessary to effectively perform their jobs, and asserts the necessity for the County to act immediately to correct these shortcomings. Vilar again, possesses an acute understanding about what it takes to work with public employees to bridge gaps and inequities that exist, and, he understands the intricacies of state legislation and its impacts on the local level.

Democrat candidate Ann Welker did not return several calls and texts to South Shore Press to present her campaign platform and positions on the issues that affect Suffolk County residents. Vilar is the candidate most highly qualified with impeccable credentials and experience, and receives the endorsement of South Shore Press.

South Shore Press endorses Suffolk County 3rd District Legislator Jim Mazzarella for re-election. Mazzarella was elected to the Suffolk County Legislature in 2021 and has accomplished more to date during his two year tenure than others have done in 20 years. A big accomplishment specifically in the 3rd LD is the increased police presence. This is an initiative that was long overdue, but Mazzarella got the job done. He has paved the way to successfully increase the number of uniformed police officers on the streets, and introduced the first ever foot patrol on Neighborhood Road in Mastic Beach.

Mazzarella was instrumental in passing legislation for the return of a more technologically-advanced shot spotter gunshot detection system. His experience makes him poised to continue working to clean up Suffolk County's finances and poor bond rating. On the horizon, Mazzarella is planning an expansion of the sewer district into the commercial areas of Mastic Beach and to

A new Smith Point Bridge to replace the existing aged out bridge will become a reality with construction beginning early 2024 and wrapping up in 2026. Nick Caracappa

When residents in Suffolk's 4th Legislative District go to the polls on November 7th, they will be asked to choose between a proven voice and leader in Republican incumbent Nick Caracappa to represent them, or a candidate in Democrat candidate Tim Hall, who is not running an active campaign.

For South Shore Press, the choice is a clear no-brainer.

Caracappa won his inaugural bid for the seat when he ran in a special election to fill the unexpired term with the passing of Legislator Tom Muratore in 2020. In his short time in office, Caracappa has taken the lead on bold issues right out the gate. Anyone who travels the Long Island Expressway, (LIE), remembers the potholes and craters that made riding this superhighway a dangerous feat.

Motorists literally took their lives into their own hands while driving the LIE. Caracappa was lazer-focused on addressing this issue with time being of the essence. His first initiative once elected was to get the powers that be responsible for conditions on the LIE back to safe driving conditions for all motorists.

Tim Hall

Caracappa penned a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul, he then reached out across the political aisle and to colleagues on other levels of government to get the ball rolling. Long story short - Caracappa, garnering the support of county and state elected officials not only bumped up the timeline for road repairs, but Long Island saw a $30 million increase in funding for the project.

Caracappa has put his focus on quality of life, true affordable housing opportunities for veterans, for seniors and for young families who want to make their homes in Suffolk County. He has in-depth knowledge of budgets and is eager to continue paying down the county's debt to increase the bond rating where the end result will put more money back into the pockets of Suffolk County's hard working residents. Caracappa also has affiliations with numerous associations and organizations within the County. His resume is an impressive one where Caracappa served as a trustee on the Middle Country Board of Education, and he was vice president of the SeldenCentereach-Three Village Little

League. Add to this Caracappa's 34 years of service with Suffolk County Water Authority, where he served 14 years as President of Local 393 UWUA, these factors make him perfectly suitable to continue serving the residents of Suffolk County and the 4th LD. Let's take a look at the Democrat candidate for a moment. Tim Hall is not running any active campaign.

This has been confirmed by representatives of the Democrat Committee. How is it that leaders on the Democrat side of the aisle could not find a suitable candidate to run for the 4th LD that would at least give residents a choice for the 4th LD? Caracappa has received the endorsements of the entire coalition of Suffolk County Law Enforcement agencies, multiple labor unions including but not limited to the Long Island Federation of Laborers, Nassau-Suffolk Building Trades, UWUA Local 393, Laborers Union Local 66, Communication Workers and IBEW. Add to this impressive list one more organization: South Shore Press proudly and unanimously endorses Nick Caracappa for re-election to the 4th Legislative District.

Anthony Figliola

In the 5th Suffolk County Legislative District race, which represents over 52,000 registered voters and encompasses communities from East Setauket to parts of Coram and Mt. Sinai, one candidate has emerged with a particularly resonant voice: Anthony Figliola.

Born and bred in Suffolk County, Figliola's ties to the area run deep. The son of U.S. Navy veterans, he credits his indomitable spirit and strong values to the challenges faced and overcome by his parents. As a resident of East Setauket, where he raises his three children alongside his wife, Figliola embodies the community's aspirations.

His professional trajectory of over two decades reflects a commendable blend of public and private sector roles. The Executive Vice President at

Beyond environmental imperatives, Figliola is acutely aware of the gripping fentanyl epidemic that has besieged Suffolk County. His description of the county as the "ground zero" for the crisis underscores the gravity of the situation. Advocating for robust support to equip law enforcement and emphasizing the universality of the crisis, Figliola says, "This is not a partisan issue; it's a humanitarian crisis."

Losquadro is a former county legislator and state assemblyman who knows how to work the levers of power to fund improvements to the local infrastructure. He’s teamed with the town board to increase the paving

The lone Democrat on the Brookhaven Town Board, Jonathan Kornreich, has one strike against him, in our opinion, by also running on the Working Families Party line. That, plus the fact that he chose not to participate in our endorsement process, makes it impossible for us to support his re-election.

His opponent, political newcomer Gary Bodenburg, comes to the race with energy and an authentic zeal to serve his community. He takes direct aim at Kornreich for the quality of life problems experienced by his neighbors, including overcrowded homes and other town code violations he said the incumbent has been remiss in handling.

Bodenburg is certainly accomplished and has the skills and qualifications to be an excellent member of the town council. He holds an associate degree from Suffolk Community College and an Elementary and Special Education Certification from St. Joseph's College. Bodenburg is out there knocking on doors and is hearing resident complaints that are not being addressed. As a member of what will most likely be a GOP-dominated town board, the Republican will have a better chance of
