I don’t, but that’s not surprising since I don’t really remember what I did yesterday.

I don’t, and I guess I’m not a good subject, either. She said I kept moving.

My answer was correct. To convince doubting readers, I have, in fact, rolled a die 20 times and noted the result, digit by digit. It was either: (a) 11111111111111111111; or (b) 63335643331622221214.

Do you still believe that the two series are equally likely to be what I rolled? Probably not!

One of them is handwritten on a slip of paper in front of me, and I’m sure readers know that (b) was the result.

The same goes for the first scenario: A person rolled a die out of my view and then informed me the result was one of these series: (a) 11111111111111111111; or (b) 66234441536125563152.

It was far more likely to be (b), a jumble of numbers.

I’m a math instructor and I think you’re wrong about this question: “Say you plan to roll a die 20 times. Which result is more likely: (a) 11111111111111111111; or (b) 66234441536125563152?” You said they’re equally likely because both specify the number for each of the 20 tosses. I agree so far. However, you added, “But let’s say you rolled a die out of my view and then said the results were one of those series. Which is more likely? It’s (b) because the roll has already occurred. It was far more likely to have been that mix than a series of ones.” I disagree. Each of the results is equally likely— or unlikely. This is true even if you are not looking at the result.

No. Decisions in Texas are generally legislative, with the lieutenant governor, speaker, and governor making them together. There were no unilateral decisions from my office dealing with those issues. And I’ll go back to my record. I’ve been elected three times as governor.

Talk about meeting cute: Anita Thigpen first saw Rick Perry at a piano recital in Haskell, Tex., when she was 6 and he was 8. They began dating in high school and wed in 1982. Known as private and shy, the candidate’s wife could be his best spokesperson.

status as the party’s alpha male.

But he should also make three key changes: One, he must hit the books. In some debates, Perry has seemed adrift. He needs to quickly develop coherent arguments on domestic and foreign policy. Two, Perry must fire up his conservative base while still wooing skittish moderates. The best candidates,

like Ronald Reagan, were able to advance their beliefs without alienating those who disagree. Three, he must prepare for even tougher scrutiny. If there are other skeletons like the hunting lodge in his past, he needs to confront them—and do a better job of explaining them.

My daddy was a family practice doctor, and in the 1970s after Medicare began, I remember him telling me, as wise as he was, “We’re moving towards socialized medicine. The first time you take a dollar from the federal government, they’ll start trying to control your life.” I became a nurse, and I’ve seen government take away more and more of our freedom to choose the care we want and the drugs we want.

We’ve given so many years to public service, and we need to make a difference.” I didn’t want us to wake up when we were 80 and regret we didn’t do this. Our country is in danger, in my opinion.

How to Win the Nomination

I’ve worked on the presidential campaigns for John McCain and George W. Bush (twice), and along the way, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t.

Here are the must-dos: 1. Observe the incumbent, then be the opposite. The more different you can seem from the guy currently in office, the better. Americans craved honesty after Richard Nixon; strength after Jimmy Carter; and moral integrity after Bill Clinton. Today voters are questioning President Obama’s economic leadership, so governors Mitt Romney and Rick Perry are both extolling their ability to help create jobs.

2. Deliver your message in seven seconds. That’s the average sound bite today. Businessman Herman Cain has boiled down his economic plan to “9-9-9”—shorthand for a 9 percent corporate tax, a 9 percent individual income tax, and a 9 percent national sales tax.

3. Show some humanity. Voters are rabidly skeptical of anything that political candidates say, so it’s more important to be human than perfect. Governor Perry may have stumbled in some debates, but many voters like his brash, unvarnished style. As one of President Obama’s key advisers, David Axelrod, said of Perry, “He looks comfortable in his own skin.” That matters.

4. Be bold. People often don’t vote on the issues; they vote on attributes, and the most important one is strength. Rep. 5. Prepare for the big moments. You have three major occasions to move public opinion and to rise in the polls in a substantial way: your announcement; your nomination speech and choice of VP; and the debates. Last month, we saw Perry sink and former House speaker Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain rise based solely on debate performances.

6. Always be a happy warrior.

Running for president is brutal— it’s like running naked through a cactus patch on fire. The process is designed to crush you and see what you’re made of, but you can never show the pain. Yes, ma’am. In 1976, I voted for Jimmy Carter, because I was in the air force, and I came from an agricultural family. A peanut farmer from Georgia had to be better than anyone else on the Democrats’ side. He was the last Democrat I voted for for president—in fact the only Democratic president I ever voted for. Lunches Packed With Love I inherited from my mother a secret brown-bag ingredient: TLC

W

hen i was 11,

I peeked into Dad ’s lunch pail and made the horrifying discovery that my mother still flirted with my father.

The evidence, a napkin resting on top of a stack of sandwiches wrapped in wax paper, was incontrovertible. Staring back at me was a drawing of a tiny woman wearing pedal pushers and a beehive bigger than a fresh batch of Jiffy Pop. This was Mom in 1968. And this version of Mom was winking.

“Love you!” she had written in a speech bubble next to the caricature. “Meat loaf for supper!”

The last thing you want to think about when you’re 11 is the possibility of your parents goofing around with each other. I tossed Dad’s Hostess Fruit Pie into the pail and dashed out the kitchen door to go tell my best friend, Eloise, that I would have to come live with her. Her father was a minister. Life had to be calmer at her house.

Mom penned all kinds of messages to Dad on those paper napkins, and he saved a whole pile of them. What embarrassed me as a dorky kid has become a cherished memory of my parents’ ability to be silly with each other, no matter what.

It also launched my own brand of lunch pail notes. When my kids were young, I’d stick little drawings in their lunches. Lots of

sketches of our dog, Max, along with smiling flowers and friendly bumblebees. When they were teenagers, I’d copy words of wisdom from noted sages. Einstein, for example, or Bruce Springsteen.

“It ain’t no sin to be glad you’re alive.”

Sing it, brother.

Perhaps inevitably, my kids grew up crafting their own handwritten gems. One of my favorites is 8-year-old Andy’s note to the Tooth Fairy, who apparently missed his first note asking her to leave his tooth behind.

“Dear Tooth Dummy,” his letter started. “Can’t you read? Keep the quarter, just give me back my tooth.”

This prompted a discussion about the perils of rushing to judgment and how Tooth Fairies are people, too—people with incredibly stressful jobs. Flying here, flying there, dodging every cat in the neighborhood, all so they can slip their hands under the pillows of sleeping children who expect cash rewards for spitting out a used-up tooth.

Okay, I may have overdone that lecture just a little.

My husband writes me love notes on recycled paper, because he’s all about being green. Oh, the thrill of finding sweet nothings scrawled on Ohio secretary of state stationery from the 1980s. That guy sure knows how to woo.

Friends who know about my lunch pail notes eagerly share stories of their own family traditions. So many revolve around food. Maura’s mom always drew hearts on the shells of hard-boiled eggs. Melinda wrote messages on her kids’ bananas. When Celia was little, her mom used to reach into an imaginary pocket over her heart and sprinkle a secret ingredient over whatever she was baking.

“We mustn’t forget the love!” she always said. Now Celia and her grown daughter reach into their own magic pockets in the kitchen.

We’re into the third generation of lunch pail notes in our home.

Whenever my 3-year-old grandson, Clayton, spends the night, he knows his lunch is going to have a napkin note from Grandma in the morning.

Like his father, the Tooth Fairy basher, he can be quite the critic.

Last week, I drew a particularly flattering picture of me—long eyelashes, chiseled cheeks to make Angelina Jolie weep— waving wildly and shouting his name. He took one look at it and shrieked, “Where’s Grandpa?”

Yikes. Add in curly-haired guy in wrinkled shirt.

“You forgot his tie,” he said.

I quickly scribbled a line of stripes down the front of the shirt.

Clayton smiled.

“Grandpa,” he whispered, running his fingers across the napkin.

“It’s you.”

Look, millions of Americans who’ve served the country didn’t want to go where they were sent, but it was their duty. I don’t consider this any different.

Governor, how would you make the White House more like Texas?

We’d have Blue Bell ice cream and Hill Country barbecue.
