Congratulations to Teresa Katubig, Extra Help Inc., and her staff for this year’s “Business/Industry of the Year Award.” As you can read in the feature article on Extra Help, Inc, Teresa has developed Extra Trammell Help Inc. from a small start-up business into a multi state organization recognized by others as a world class organization. The Board of Directors would like to welcome Heartland Regional Medical Center’s CEO Steve Lunn to the Board of Directors. We look forward to Steve’s input and guidance. At the same time we would like to offer a special ‘Thank You’ to Jill Lewis for her dedicated service to the Chamber. Jill elected not to run for another term, in order to spending more time with her family. Jill has led the Membership Committee and the Marketing Committee. Also, thank you to Ashley Gott for taking on the additional duties as our new Secretary/Treasurer for the Board of Directors. After being absent from the Chamber for a while, we are happy to welcome back Joni Barwick. Joni has taken on the additional responsibilities of Membership Development. I feel we have great a team of member volunteers and

office support to move the Marion Chamber to the next level of member benefits and services. This past November, the Marion Chamber won two awards at the annual Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives Fall Conference. The Chamber won first place for the Communications Award for Websites and first place for the Communications Award for e-Newsletter. SI Small Business Solutions is the Chamber’s website developer and partner in this award. The e-Newsletter was designed and developed by Joni. Using these two communications tools, we have been able to disseminate more timely information of benefit to our members. This year we will continue to provide our time tested array of Chamber events: Annual Dinner, Legislative Summit in Springfield, Graduation Spree, Community Day at Rent One Park and our Golf Scramble. Lisa Hudgens, 2011 Chairman of the Board, put together a committee to explore additional venues, like the new Bass Tournament at Lake of Egypt this past October. Last Christmas we also partnered with Ed Davis and the Marion Main Street organization to help with the Santa on the Square promotion. Giving away 60-plus bikes to the kids was an uplifting experience. Another new feature in 2012 is our splitting up the monthly luncheon

Congratulations to the Chamber of Commerce for the completion of another successful year. Marion continues to grow and prosper in large part because of he uncompromising cooperation between city

government and the chamber. From the moment way back when the two united in a joint effort to achieve a common goal, good things for the city, the business community and our citizens began to happen. Because of our continued cooperation and joint effort, 2012 is bound to be the best year yet. We look forward to it with unbridled excitement. BOB BUTLER is mayor of Marion.

Extra Help Inc. Business/Industry of the Year

BY SCOTT FITZGERALD

Teresa Katubig said it feels “really awesome” that a company she founded in 1995 — Extra Help Inc. — will be honored as the 2011 Business/Industry of the Year by the Marion Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s all about hard work. No one gave me anything. I’m living the American Dream,” Katubig said about getting the prestigious award during the Chamber’s

Annual Awards Banquet beginning at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Williamson County Pavilion. Katubig began her work career as a 16-year-old teenager at McDonald’s in Murphysboro owned by Short Enterprises. She ran the cashier and remembers the hands-on, business training she got, describing it as “fabulous.” She stayed with McDonald’s and climbed the corporate ladder, moving to St. Louis and working in employee recruiting.

Katubig decided to go for higher education to further her career and enrolled at John A. Logan College and eventually SIU where she got her bachelor accountancy degree. As a certified public accountant, she contracted with a business firm and found the firm had not paid employee taxes and worker’s compensation. The urge to start a company tending to those needs for other firms and businesses led her to Johnston City where she

opened her first office in 1995 as a temporary employment agency. Within a short period Katubig of a few years, the need for what Katubig and her Extra Help company offered in the way helping companies fill fulltime positions, manage their payroll; tax filings; worker’s compensation and other workforce tools such as timekeeping, employee self-service and

employee benefits, was in demand throughout the area. She eventually opened offices in St. Louis and Edwardsville. The Extra Help main office is in Marion. Today, Extra Help has more than 30 employees with more than 1,000 clients in 31 states. Sales in 2010 were more than $17 million and are on track to reach $20 million this year. In 2010, Extra Help was recognized by The St. Louis Business Journal as the 14th largest women-

owned businesses in the St. Louis area. It also was the recipient of the 2008 Good Neighbor of the Year in Southern Illinois. Katubig was awarded a “Woman on the Rise” award in 2010 by the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer and selected as one of St. Louis’ “Winning Women” in 2011. Extra Help is included on Inc Magazine’s 500/5000 list of fastest growing companies in the country. scott.fitzgerald@thesouthern.com 618-351-5076
