Vernon and Salem, Burkdell Mulch serves the entire region with great service and a full line of products including some of the hottest outdoor living accessories on the market today. “We are selling lots of fire pits right now,” he explained. “Fire pits let you enjoy your patio longer – earlier in the spring and later in the fall because of the warmth of the fire. Another thing that is very popular right now is outdoor kitchens. People want to spend more time outdoors and everything tastes better outside.” He said that outdoor kitchens are on display in both Carbondale and Mount Vernon and the Carbondale location boasts two outdoor fireplace displays. Burkdell also offers pergolas and gazebos, which he calls “an attractive

way to provide some shade on patios.” “We have many styles of pine tree pergolas and gazebos,” he said. “We can also customize them for any size you want or need.” All of the company’s products are offered at a very competitive price, as Burkdell purchases materials in large quantities and passes the savings along to customers. They even produce their own mulch, thereby maintaining high levels of quality. “We take the raw product to our Benton location and process it into the finished product our customers have come to expect when they buy Burkdell Mulch,” David said. The company also offers mushroom compost and topsoil in addition to the mulch. With 12 seasons of experience, Burkdell’s knowledgeable staff can help

Sterling Mattress Factory Owned by Mike and Treena Wicoff, Sterling Mattress Factory in Herrin, creates handcrafted mattress sets, Memory Foam sets, adjustable beds, lift chairs, custom-size mattresses, headboards, and accessories – simply everything you need for a comfortable nights sleep. “The handcraftsmanship of our mattresses sets them apart from massproduced products and provides ‘oldfashioned’ value that our customers can’t see, but it’s there,” Mike said. “For example, instead of using the standard one-and-half pound foam, we use two to five pound. It’s a difference you really can’t see, but it raises the quality of our mattresses.” Mike said that the biggest trend today is the no-flip mattress. Sterling however, offers both the newer no-flip and the traditional two-sided mattresses, so customers can have their choice. Sterling mattresses are all in stock and ready to go. No waiting. Custom orders usually take 2-10 days; most less than a week. Sterling Mattress Factory cuts out the

retail store part of the equation and sells direct from the factory to you. More than 25,000 satisfied customers from across Southern Illinois are testimony to the store’s success. “We can produce a quality handcrafted mattress for about the same price or less than a mass-producing product, Mike said. “Yet, we put in the extra value that others don’t.” “In addition to having competitive prices, the friendly and knowledgeable “Sleep Factory” staff makes the both shopping and delivery experience a pleasure. Master craftsman Brian Wicoff is the production manager and keeps the operation running smoothly and efficiently to ensure quality and on-time delivery. “Professional Sleep Expert” Bryan Shroeder not only crafts the mattresses, but also sells them as well. The newest addition to the craftsmen of Sterling Mattress Factory is Joe Colvin. Wicoff said that Sterling Mattress Factory has one main goal, “We’re dedicated to giving the people of Southern Illinois a good night’s sleep.”

Murdale True Value Murdale True Value, located on Carbondale’s west side has only one public entrance, but through those doors both professionals and do-it-yourselfers can find almost anything for practically any project. The reason, says Murdale owner George Sheffer, is that the True Value store is more than just a single entity. “We really have four different stores in one,” he says. “That all adds to the value our customers receive in price, service, selection and quality.” Sheffer says Murdale is a complete appliance retailer, a rental company, a hardware store and a full lock shop with locksmiths. He says that the combination of the four “stores” give Murdale True Value a different approach to serving customers. “If you are wanting to complete practically any project, here you can get the expertise to make your job easier along with the products and equipment you’ll need to do the job,” he explains. Sheffer offers the example of a homeowner who wants to paint his home. “A lot of places will sell you paint, but what people really need to know is that the job is not just about paint,” he adds. “It goes back to the knowledge of how to do the whole job the right way. The preparation of the surface is key. It means using the right products and the right applicators, too.” To make the task even easier, Murdale’s rental department offers everything from paint sprayers to motorized lifts. Beyond painting and staining, the same level of service, expertise and easy-to-use tools are available for a countless number of projects. “We add value for our customers by helping them get the end results they want,” Sheffer explains. “People need to understand that the true cost of a project can only be calculated when the project is all said and done.. That’s what sets us apart. We can help from start to finish. With us, the project is safe, easy and done.” He explained that the philosophy of Murdale True Value is to make things easier for the customer, not for themselves. “No matter what area or what type of project it is, if you go to other places you’ll see that they do one thing:

what they think is easiest for them. For example, when it comes to selling things like nuts and bolts or nails, they want to put them into packages because it is the most convenient way for them to ring them up and keep track of how many they sell. But is it easier for the customer?” Sheffer points out that customers can try nuts on to a bolt they bring in to the store to make sure they get the correct size instead of having to guess that the nuts in a package will fit. Also, Murdale will sell any number of many fasteners and other hardware items. “If you want to buy just one or two, you can buy just one or two instead of a dozen or more,” he said. “Buy whatever you need. We’re not forcing you into a package. It’s more of a customerdelight focus rather than just meeting their needs. It goes way beyond that in a nice way.” Customer service is plentiful in every department of Murdale True Value. The store boasts the largest selection of Weber grills and grilling accessories in southern Illinois. “We feel that we are dominant in the grill business,” he says. “We have

Page 6 Thursday, June 16, 2011 The Southern Illinoisan

expertise that most places do not have in getting the most from your grill. Plus we’re a Weber warranty service center, so we can repair grills should they ever need it.” The same goes for appliances. Murdale has a vast selection of major home appliances. “We offer aggressive pricing on appliances, but our advantages don’t end there. We don’t have all of the other hidden fees that many other stores have.” Murdale does not charge for delivery or limit delivery just to the curb. “We do standard installation completely free,” Sheffer says. “We’ll come, put in the new unit, take the old one away if you wish and do an environmentally-friendly disposal of it. We’ve done that for years and it’s just a service we do to take care of our customers.” Recently Sheffer heard from a customer who asked a Murdale team member in appliances for advice in connecting a refrigerator’s ice maker. The customer told Sheffer that the associate not only educated him on how to do it, he went with the customer to the plumbing department to make sure he got all of the

correct fittings and tools for the job. “You come get the products you need, so however you want to do a project, we can help you. We have the expertise and the equipment to do it,” Sheffer says. Everyone at Murdale True Value is proud of the way they treat their customers, but they are also proud of their communities. The store frequently supports local charitable and civic organizations including Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale. Recently, Murdale was designated as one of the top five “Youth Friendly Businesses” in Jackson County by the Jackson County Positive Youth Development Coalition. “We try to be very involved in the community. We care about our community,” Sheffer explains. “We live here, we work here and we play here. This is not a stepping stone to somewhere else for us. Our kids go to school here, we plan on retiring here. That’s why we try to put a lot back into the community. We try to help out organizations and we’ll even put on fun days so the kids can come here and play for free. It’s all about giving back to the community.”

Pisoni Real Estate What’s the key to a successful real estate transaction? In many cases, it’s having a real estate agent who knows both real estate and the community. In Herrin and the surrounding area, no one knows real estate and the community like Richard Pisoni of Pisoni Real Estate. In fact, he’s been helping clients buy and sell homes longer than some other agents have been alive – more than 50 years! “What I bring to the table is different

form everyone else,” he says. “I’ve seen Herrin and the area grow and I’ve helped sell or buy many of the homes here – some maybe even more than once or twice!” Together with brokers Maxine Smith and Cheryl Ruzich, Pisoni offers a dedicated team to help with all of your real estate needs, including rentals and property management.

The premier assisted living center in southern Illinois is getting bigger – and better. Prairie Living at Chautauqua, located in Carbondale, is adding 50 new apartments and other amenities. Designed to serve adults 65 and older of all incomes who may need some help to maintain their independence, the Prairie Living affordable assisted living community provides a wonderful alternative to a nursing home or struggling alone at home. It especially benefits those who cannot afford private pay assisted living. “The new apartments will open in July, and in addition, we’re adding lots of additional spaces for the residents to use and enjoy,” Janet Squibb, director of marketing, said. New features will include an exercise room, a library with a computer lab, a theater and a billiards room, all complementing the current craft and recreation areas, spacious dining room, chapel and activity areas. The main focus of Prairie Living at Chautauqua, however, remains providing care and assistance for residents. Residents get ongoing health monitoring from a nursing staff who are on-site 24

hours per day, 7 days per week. There is daily assistance with everything from medication reminders to help with daily living activities such as dressing, walking, grooming and hygiene. Additionally, three meals are served each day along with snacks. There also is weekly housekeeping and laundry, assistance with transportation and a wide variety of monthly programs and special events. “We have a loving caring staff that meets the need of residents on a day to day basis, as well as a nursing staff that cares for their medical needs,” Squibb added. “Safety and wellbeing comes first.” It all comes with beautiful living spaces in a facility designed in the style of noted architect Frank Lloyd Wright – spaces with neighbors who are also friends. With them, residents share life experiences, fun activities and more while maintaining health, well-being, dignity and independence. “When you need a helping hand or personal attention, our courteous and caring staff is always ready to assist you,” Squibb added.

HR Physical Therapy HR Physical Therapy is an independent, locally-owned clinic located behind Logan Primary Care. Laura Roach, PT/owner, and her staff offer an array of physical therapy services to the southern Illinois area. At HR Physical Therapy you can always count on personalized care from a licensed physical therapist with each visit. Unlike many “revolving door” facilities you will receive consistent, continuous care from Laura, Amy and Rachel. Our highly trained and specialized physical therapists offer services for neck and low back pain, lower body ailments, post surgical procedures, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, balance and coordination issues, plus many other outpatient diagnoses. A heated pool is available for a wide variety of aquatic therapies. Our main goal is to help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent further injury through patient and family education. HR Physical Therapy believes that each

patient should be fully knowledgeable of their condition and the proper treatment options available. As stated in the PT Magazine in October 1999, “Physical therapists are good people to know. They’re educated in understanding the interaction of all your body parts. Their hands-on approach begins with examination, diagnosis, and treatment of the immediate problem. Then they teach you how to take care of yourself by showing you how to do exercises and how to use your body properly to gain strength and mobility and prevent recurring injury. You’ll find them advising on proper posture and body motion in the work place, treating injuries, consulting on fitness and administering physical therapy.” HR Physical Therapy employees work hard to provide the best patient care at an optimum cost. We are currently offering sports injury and weekend warrior injury assessments, and will work with you and

your physician to help in your recovery. We are located behind Logan Primary Care at 3308 Logan Drive in Herrin and are open early morning and late evenings to accommodate before and after work and school schedules. Laura and her staff invite you to stop in for a tour or just give us a call; we look forward to getting you back on the go. At HR Physical Therapy, the atmosphere is that of a family environment, very much unlike many medical and rehab facilities you see. Gary Holmes said, “I have been going to HR Physical Therapy off and on for several years. The staff has helped me return to work after my injuries. I would highly recommend HR Therapies services. They are very, very good at what they do.” Gary Holmes “HR Physical Therapy is the greatest!” said Christy Duiguid. “I have worked with Laura every time I have been there. She has helped me with my ankle, wrist and after surgery on both knees. They

have the best pool; it has helped my recovery time. I would not go anywhere else.” It is true that patients do have a wide variety of choices for therapy and each individual will have a comfort ability level given many factors. The staff at HR Physical Therapy welcomes the chance to help you and get your body back performing at its’ high potential.

Dr. Mindy Moore of the Family Foot and Ankle Center of Southern Illinois is one of those physicians. Originally from Carterville and a graduate of both John A. Logan College and Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Dr. Moore opened the Family Foot and Ankle Center in Herrin the Fall of 2009 following graduation

Rend Lake College Designed for working adults looking for an exciting new career, Rend Lake College’s new Evening Cosmetology School is about to kick off. There are still spots available for anyone ready for this fun and challenging field. The program begins Aug. 15 at Studio RLC, located at the RLC MarketPlace on Potomac Blvd. in Mt. Vernon. There is still time to sign up but enrollment is limited, so anyone interested is encouraged to call early. Financial aid is available. “This spring, our day program saw its highest enrollment ever,” said Daphne Mitchell, director of the Cosmetology program. “Our new reduced prices had a huge impact on that increase. Even so, we still get requests from people who would love to sign up but cannot because of the daytime format. This new evening program was created with those students in mind. “Our students are an exciting bunch,” said Mitchell. “We spend plenty of time learning new, trendy styles and new

techniques, but they are definitely a spirited group. “I believe that if you were to call 100 salons in any city nation-wide, many of them would tell you they’re looking to hire more staff,” said Mitchell. “The job placement potential makes for very attractive consideration. Along with hair design, this industry offers opportunities in make-up, fashion photography, platform artistry and salon management, among others.” Graduates of RLC’s Cosmetology program, which can be completed in just 21 months, earn an occupational certificate. Students practice their skills by working with real clients under the supervision of the instructors. When they graduate, students are prepared to take the Illinois Cosmetologist licensure exam. Anyone interested in registering is invited to call 618-242-8459, or email Mitchell at mitchelld@rlc.edu. More information also is available on the Web at www.rlc.edu/studiorlc.

At first glance, you might think that Brick House Living, located on Rt. 148 in Energy is just another furniture store. You’d be wrong. “We’re a lifestyle furniture store,” owner Michael Haege says. “That means we have more than just furniture. We have lighting, tables, accessories, rugs and more – basically everything for your home.” Haege is a veteran in the furniture and interior design industry, having worked for both Havertys Furniture and Pottery Barn. Likewise, he’s no stranger to Southern Illinois; his grandfather was proprietor of the popular “Squire Shop” in Carbondale’s Murdale Shopping Center throughout the 1970s. “Because we sell furniture for all of the rooms in a home as well as rugs, lamps and accessories, we’ve had some customers completely outfit entire rooms from our store,” Haege says. For their upholstery Brick House Living offers more than 80 different fabric styles and colors, that is all made in the USA. “We can give you exactly the style and color what you want in an American-

made piece in approximately 4 weeks.” Haege says three points separate Brick House Living from other furniture retailers. First, every item is clearly marked with an honest, everyday price. Second, Brick House Living offers a three-day, in-home guaranteed. That means even after you’ve had your new furniture home for a couple of days, if you decide it’s not exactly what you want, you can exchange it for another piece or return it. Third, you can count on the quality of every item at Brick House Living. From new furniture to one-of-a-kind antiques, each piece has been hand selected for quality and value. All together, it makes Brick House Living the perfect place to jazz up a room or your entire home. “Most people are surprised at what they find here. We’re stylish. We have formal to casual to rustic. And, we believe your furniture, especially recliner pieces, can have comfort as well as style. You don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. You can have both at Brick House Living.”

JoCo Pools – Mosquito Authority “After building pools for over 25 years, it bothered me that my clients couldn’t even use their pools during certain times of the day because of mosquito infestation. I am proud to offer a safe way to rid yards of these pests” says Joe Cohen, owner of Jo-Co Pools. With warmer weather approaching, everyone is dreaming about their summer plans. Some will travel, some will visit relatives, but many people choose to stay at home and enjoy their summer right in their own backyard. For those people, a backyard is a haven, a place where you can spend time with family and friends, barbecuing, swimming and playing fetch with your favorite companion. Nothing can wreck those amazing plans like pesky mosquitoes. Those nasty blood suckers not only leave itching whelps, they also carry a host of diseases including West Nile, Encephalitis and Heart Worms. This year authorities have warned us that the mosquito population will be worse than ever before due to the recent

flooding. In the past, your only defense against these blood suckers was to purchase citronella candles or to fumigate yourself with smelly insect repellent. Now you have a choice over these traditional methods. At The Mosquito Authority, we spray your yard, not you. Using a synthetic version of the chrysanthemum plant, we apply a barrier spray to your yard once every three weeks, breaking the life cycle of the mosquito. After two barrier sprays we guarantee that you will be able to virtually have a mosquito free backyard. In fact, we are so confident in our product that if you are bothered by mosquitoes in between sprays we will come out and spray again free of charge. The Mosquito Authority not only sprays residences, but we have Special Event spraying also. If you have a wedding, birthday party or a special get together planned and are worried mosquitoes will put a damper on those wonderful plans, then Event spraying is

the thing for you. We will come the day before your event and then several hours before the event to make sure you will be able to enjoy your event without worry of being bothered by mosquitoes. We recently sprayed for a friends wedding and are proud to say that the wedding went off without a hitch and mosquito free. We are the only company in the area spraying yards to make them free of those pesky little mosquitoes and if you refer us to your family and friends we will send you a check to say “Thank You!” If having your summer plans uninterrupted by mosquitoes excites you, visit www.bugsbite.com or call 800-7091190.

‘I am proud to offer a safe way to rid yards of these pests.’ JOE COHEN, OWNER OF JO CO POOLS

Tired of those pesky, blood sucking mosquitoes? We have the cure for you and your yard. It’s a new concept to use a child and pet friendly spray to create a barrier in your yard. After two barrier sprays we guarantee a virtually, mosquito free backyard. So stop wasting money on candles and smelly sprays and call us today!

Plaza Tire Marion Our Mission “Is to treat everyone as we expect to be treated” - Vernon “Pee Wee” Rhodes

Plaza Tire Service, Inc. was founded early in 1963 by Mr. Vernon “Pee Wee” Rhodes. It was originally known as Plaza Car Wash., at that time doing business strictly as an automatic car wash service. The business did well except on rainy days. In order to shore up the company’s financial base, the business expanded into an auto clean-up and detailing service for local automobile dealerships. Along with servicing these vehicles, the company started selling tires to the dealers as they were needed. The operation required a seven day work week, using Sundays to purchase retreads to be sold to the dealers. After a while a retreader rented part of the car wash building, thus sharing the rent and

That’s why so many people choose the Medicine Shoppes in Marion, Harrisburg and Ridgway as their source for all of their health care needs. Unlike those big box stores, the Medicine Shoppe offers friendly service, fast pharmacy services, close convenient parking and advice and assistance without long lines and unknowledgeable staff. “Our clinical services are superior to any other in the area,” says Angie Tresso, sales representative for Medicine Shoppe. “Plus, our pharmacy is a specialized care center. This means we reach above and beyond to serve and meet the unique health care needs of our customers.” Each of the stores offers pharmacy services, clinical services, medication management and home medical equipment – including oxygen and sleep therapy. In fact, the Medicine Shoppes are proud that they offer licensed respiratory therapists who make ongoing visits with respiratory equipment patients. Walk into the Medicine Shoppe and

you’ll find practically anything you need to care for yourself and loved ones. They even carry a complete line of variety lift chairs – in fact, the Harrisburg store has 14 different models on display, making it easy to find the perfect chair! “We’re a complete center for all facets of home medical care,” Steve Ledbetter, CEO, said. “Many people consider us a one-stop shop for their health needs.” He says that service at all three Medicine Shoppe locations means having highly-qualified and friendly pharmacists available for consultations and questions. “We try to instill a service-oriented approach in taking care of people,” Ledbetter said, “and we’ve been doing that since opening our first store in Harrisburg in 1983.” He added that taking care of customers through outstanding customer service has allowed the Medicine Shoppes to expand into Marion in 1985 and Ridgway in 2006. The key to the stores’ success is service. “The fact that we’ve been in business so long speaks volumes about our way of doing things, and that’s taking care of people,” he said.

Wright Do-it Center: A Proud History Of Doing It Right Locally and family owned since 1964, Wright Do-It Center has stayed true to its roots of an excellent, knowledgeable and hard-working staff and friendly service. Founded by Jim W. Wright and Lawrence McMahan, and still owned by the Wright family nearly 50 years later, the store was originally know as McMahan & Wright Lumber and was established in a single-pole barn. This location at 208 South Williams Street in Murphysboro, Illinois is where the Murphysboro store still resides today. In 1968, Jim Wright decided to go it alone and, with a fresh new look, Wright Building Center was born. The store has always been a family affair, with Jim’s wife Laura, father John, son Jerry, and daughter Kathy all having been part of the business. This sense of family is also prevalent with all of the employees, many of whom have been with the organization more than 20 years. The store expanded in 1984 with an additional location opening in Sparta and, shortly afterward, a full-service drive-thru lumber yard was added to the Murphysboro store. In 1994, Wright Building Center changed its

operating name to Wright Do-It Center, reflective of its strategic association with Do-It Best brand. A small business that began with a handful of employees has grown to two locations and over 80 employees. What’s the biggest benefit they offer their customers? Wright Do-it Center partners with its customers from start to finish, and buys them time with excellent service and prices that empower both do-ityourselfers and contractors to do things right the first time. In addition to its many fine brands of home improvement products and services, Wright Do-it Center recently became a StoneCraft distributor. This allows Wright Do-it Center customers to enjoy outstanding values on some of the finest stone textures, finishes and molds available. This recent development compliments Wright Do-it Center’s complete selection of kitchen & bath design, tool rental, and installed sales resources. Reflecting on a proud history of success within the local community, Jim Wright admits he is not the brightest and school was something that did not come

easily to him – but that did not stop him. He will tell you that he built his entire business based on everything he learned from high school football and his coach, Doc Bencini. Jim was part of the 1947 Murphysboro Township football team that holds the record for being undefeated and un-scored on. He feels that the success of Wright Do-it Center is the direct result of a spirit of teamwork and the talented employees who bring a positive attitude to work each and every day.
