As we settle in to winter in Central Oregon, the library offers plenty to keep you reading, learning, and trying new things. Take part in the Winter Reading Challenge (dpl.pub/winterread) to earn cool prizes and bragging rights, stream movies for all ages using Hoopla or Kanopy (dpl. pub/digital), and learn a new language (dpl.pub/mango). Plus, a community favorite returns in December: The Train Man.

La Pine & Sisters Libraries

We celebrated the reopening of the La Pine and Sisters Libraries in October. These dynamic new spaces welcome visitors with open and bright floorplans, colorful children’s discovery spaces, meeting and study rooms, and more. Both locations are open for regular operations. Turn to page 10 for more information about library bond projects, including the remodeling of the Sunriver Library, which started in November.

All Aboard! The Train Man Returns

I

t was nearly 25 years ago when Michael “The Train Man” Lavrich started sharing his model trains with delighted children—and adults—at the Downtown Bend Library. In the decades since then, his annual display of model trains has become a highly anticipated holiday tradition for countless families in Central Oregon. Lavrich is back this year to share the trains with young and old alike.

MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK STAFF PROFILE

Heidi Coles

PUBLIC SERVICES SPECIALIST The year was 2001, the library mostly housed books, VHS tapes, and CDs—and if you frequented the Redmond Library, chances are you knew Heidi. She has grown with the library to offer an array of innovative services and updated materials. “Creativebug and the Library of Things collection are pretty cool. I enjoy backpacking, and the food dehydrator has been a fun way to prepare snacks for my hikes,” says Heidi. She provides support in a variety of settings to the Redmond community, but says the people are what she admires most about her job. “In addition to processing materials, I enjoy watching a customer’s face light up when they find out the library offers so much more than books.” Libraries are not just physical buildings; they are community gathering places and institutions that promote intellectual freedom. Even before VHS, Heidi checked out reel-to-reel movie projectors along with silent films at the University of Madison-Wisconsin’s library. “My flatmates and I had some fun silent movie parties!,” she says. CUSTOMER PROFILE

Kelli McMasters

Former students and parents warmly greet Kelli in the newly remodeled La Pine Library. “I love the kid’s mural and overall it has a very happy vibe,” she says. With 18 years teaching experience, Kelli is forging new creative endeavors after the school bell rings. “I needed something to do. My husband helped me create a studio in the garage where I could work on my stained glass art.” She’s a big fan of Libby audiobooks during parts of the glassmaking process. “I get to be a part of that book world again. During college I fell out of that love of reading.” Kelli and her family visit the library monthly to stock up on books, and she recently attended the La Pine Library’s Grand Reopening Celebration. “The library encourages kids to be active readers and participate in some great programming, like summer reading and Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB), and they recently hosted a great Educators’ Night where I won a set of OBOB books for our classroom.”

Graham Fox

COMMUNITY LIBRARIAN Whether you’re seeking one-on-one tech support or information about employment—searching, resumes, and applying—Community Librarian Graham is your go-to resource. “I’m here to help people from all walks of life, to help make access to training and information easier,” says Graham. He stays busy coordinating Thrive Central Oregon, running a mobile Sharebrary Library to provide access to our houseless neighbors, and creating a printed publication for isolated seniors. In other words, he does a lot! Graham says his love of libraries took root at Kansas State University’s Hale Library. Fast forward 16 years and he has spent nearly half of those years at DPL. “The library is a welcoming place thanks to our amazing staff. Come in and ask for help with almost anything. Libraries are one of the last free public spaces,” says Graham. Reading a smattering of everything comes with the territory, but Graham’s favorite mind-bending sci-fi author is Philip K. Dick and his longtime favorite book is Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson.

NOW OPEN! La Pine and Sisters Libraries The La Pine and Sisters Libraries are now open to the public once again following extensive remodeling of both locations. We hosted grandopening events at each location in October to celebrate and were overjoyed to have hundreds of you join us.

COMMUNITY GATHERING SPACES. Both libraries feature a new meeting room with a partition wall that can be opened for large events that spillover into the library, or closed for more focused programming. The room is also accessible after hours, providing greater accessibility to the community. STUDY/MEETING ROOMS. The Sisters Library and the La Pine Library now have two reservable meeting rooms each for public use. These spaces address the increased demand for collaborative and creative workspaces.

TECHNOLOGY ACCESS

CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY SPACES. Children learn through sensory experiences and hands-on activities, and these colorful spaces are designed to engage bodies and minds. From winding shelves filled with books to explore to new interactive play centers, children of all ages will find multiple ways to read, play, and explore in their new library. TECHNOLOGY ACCESS. New public computers give customers access to the internet as well as essential software, such as the Microsoft Office suite. Free and fast WiFi is available throughout the building for customers with their own laptop, tablet, or phone. TEEN SPACES. The renovated teen areas give older youth a place to meet, study, and create—all in a space of their own. FIREPLACES. A new electric fireplace now serves as a focal point at the northeast end of the building. Chairs around it make it the perfect place to cozy up with a book.

Redmond and Sunriver Library Updates

We are now half-way through the construction of the new Redmond Library, which will open to the public in the fall of 2024. A temporary Redmond Library is open at 2127 S Hwy 97 in Redmond during construction. Remodeling of the Sunriver Library began in November, with a temporary unit now open in the library’s parking lot during renovations.
