EVENTS
April/May 2024
Welcome!
In Central Oregon, springtime also means A Novel Idea time. Join us throughout May as we present free public programs exploring themes found in this year’s community read selections: Shark Heart by Emily Habeck (selection for adults and teens) and No Matter the Distance by Cindy Baldwin (youth selection). Learn more about A Novel Idea on our website at dpl.pub/anovelidea and on page 12.
New Art in Libraries
A new art piece was recently installed in the Sisters Library Community Room. The Events guide cover features a close-up look at this large-scale piece; you can see the full installation and learn more about artist Kristy Kún on page 10.
Using This Guide
You’ll find full descriptions and more information for all programs on our web calendar at dpl.pub/calendar. The web calendar is also your go-to place for any programs that require registration. All library programs are free of charge.

PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK
DENISE CAUDELL PUBLIC SERVICES SPECIALIST
Denise ebbs and flows with the growth of Deschutes Public Library. From Redmond to Downtown Bend and now Sisters, she has worked as a Public Services Specialist across much of Deschutes County. “I’ve had a few exciting gigs, including driving the Book Buggy around Central Oregon for visits and story times,” she says. Denise is an advocate for Homeword Bound—a service providing library materials for homebound residents—and is credited for coming up with its name. With more than 20 years’ library experience, Denise says there’s still so much to love about her job. “I enjoy interacting with customers of all ages and assisting them in finding information or locating their next favorite read.” Her favorite book is The Wager by David Grann, and she enjoys authors Kristin Hannah, Eric Carle, James Dean, Jo Jo Moyes, Rachel Hawkins, and Patrick DeWitt. Denise adds, “Our library has so many excellent resources. I enjoy Creativebug for all the crafts and recently Consumer Reports to gather information on a new car purchase.”
ASHTON, BETSEY, AND NOAH
PROFILE
MACK NILES
Leading the way for the next generation is Mack. He comes from a supportive family of library volunteers, and was eager to give back at an early age. “Volunteering at the library is a great way to be a part of the community,” says Mack. He takes his approach to shelving the children’s area efficiently by starting with picture books, then moving to early readers, fiction, graphic novels, and finishing with nonfiction. His interest in baking led him to suggest a purchase, Dungeons and Dragons Heroes’ Cookbook. “I’ve probably checked that book out more than anything else and it’s really great to see a book I suggested in the library’s collection.” Moreover, the library has events that are just for teens like him. “I’ve taken a coding class, 3Doodler pen program, made a mindfulness jar, and attended a history of La Pine presentation.” Mack provides a caring touch to the La Pine Library and community—and we are grateful for his service.
‘Books, crafts & chaos’ is printed in big text on a large sheet of butcher paper as several families add their artistic touch to the mural during the monthly Rainbow Family Night at the Downtown Bend Library. Ashton (she/her), Betsey (she/her), and their son Noah (he/him) look forward to the gathering each month, and it’s something they discovered even before stepping foot inside the library. “We felt safer and more welcome simply knowing it was offered,” says Ashton. “One of my favorite parts is the selection of books they’ve pulled for us to browse. To see my family and I represented is hugely meaningful.” Ashton spent undergrad nights studying at the library and later served as an AmeriCorps vista at the public library in Fairbanks, Alaska. Ashton says the library is a critical way for their family to connect in a new community. “From houseless to queer to those struggling to make ends meet to the richest people in town, the library is there for anyone who walks in. There is room for everyone,” Ashton says. She and Betsey are raising Noah and their other child, Beleif (they/them), intertwined with all the library has to offer, complete with their own library cards.
A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT
New Art in the Sisters Library Celebrates the Beauty of the Metolius River
The renovation and construction of libraries throughout the county brings a wonderful opportunity for Deschutes Public Library to expand its existing public art collection. One of the first of these new pieces of art is now installed in the community room of the Sisters Library.
Oregon artist Kristy Kún’s large-scale work—which nearly runs the length of a wall and took hundreds of hours to create—is constructed of handmade felt and fibers. Kún crafts her artwork from natural wool, creating richly textured surfaces like the one in the photos. Not only is it beautiful, it also helps with the acoustics in the room. It was commissioned specifically for the Sisters Library, and Kún says she drew inspiration from the nearby Metolius River.
“I worked with a repeating woven pattern for the physical construction of the textile, and integrated color as a ribbon in this pattern— greens and golds of Ponderosa Pine trees reflecting onto brilliant turquoise blue water of your beloved Metolius,” she said. “It is incredibly honoring to have this work featured in a community meeting space! I strove to make a timeless work that reflects the spirit of the community and serve as a backdrop to gatherings in this place of knowledge for generations to come.”
The Sisters Library also features new art from Sisters residents Randy Redfield and Carolyn Platt, and Bend artists Janet Brockway and Pat Clark. Unique art installations are planned for every library in Deschutes County; a call for submissions was held in 2023. Find a video with Kún discussing this new artwork at

Author! Author! Presents Robin Wall Kimmerer
Thursday, May 16 • 7:00 pm
A Novel Idea...Read Together
Join us throughout May for the 21st annual A Novel Idea. The idea behind this popular community read program is simple: pick a great book, engage with community through thought-provoking and relevant programming, and wrap up the project with free and accessible visits from the author. This year we offer two books, one for adults and one for young readers.
The Deschutes Public Library Foundation’s Author! Author! literary series wraps up on May 16 with Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants and Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses. Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She is also the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment. Tickets now on sale at www.dplfoundation.org
Shark Heart, by Emily Habeck, is an intergenerational love story that begins with newlyweds Wren and her husband, Lewis—a man who, over the course of nine months, transforms into a great white shark. Habek’s debut novel is an unforgettable story about life’s perennial questions, the fragility of memories, finding joy amidst grief and creating a meaningful life.
No Matter the Distance, by Cindy Baldwin, tells the story of 11-year-old Penny Rooney. Penny has cystic fibrosis (CF), which means she has to do breathing treatments to help her lungs work. During spring break she spots something impossible in the creek behind her house: a dolphin. This unexpected encounter helps Penny learn to write her own story in this captivating novel in verse.
Programming
Programming begins in May; you’ll find A Novel Idea-related events throughout this Events guide and in the A Novel Idea Reader’s guide (available April 19 in libraries and online at dpl.pub/anovelidea). Cindy Baldwin discusses her work at the Downtown Bend Library on May 18, and Emily Habeck presents at Caldera High School on June 1. Tickets are free but required for Emily Habeck’s presentation; tickets become available online (dpl.pub/anovelidea) and in libraries starting May 13.
All A Novel Idea programs, including the authors’ presentations, are free of charge thanks to the support of the Deschutes Public Library Foundation.
