nother year has come and gone, seemingly in the blink of an eye, from my personal perspective. Since having assumed the role of managing director of The Source and at the helm of a biweekly publication, I find that my life passes by, for the most part, in hectic two week spurts. But before the clock strikes midnight on December 31st and we move into 2015, I wish to express my gratitude for the many wonderful people that have made 2014 such a memorable year.

First and foremost, I thank my loving wife, two beautiful sons and my extended family for their unwavering support in all that I attempt to accomplish – a life without you is truly unimaginable! To the entire staff at The Source, who devote their time and effort day in and day out ensuring that our labour of love is shared with a city we are all very proud of, I say thank you for an endless job well done! We are extremely grateful for the many sponsors who have supported us on our journey and provided the necessary fuel to keep the presses running – we would not be here without you! And last but most definitely not least, God bless each and every one of our readers – your support is the essential ingredient inspiring us to do what we do. While we are on the topic of ingredients, allow me to leave you with a delightful recipe for the New Year. Follow the instructions carefully and let your heart and soul feast on ambrosia! A Recipe for 2015 and all the years to come… Take twelve fine, full-grown months; see that these are thoroughly free from old memories of bitterness, rancor and hate, cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short, see that these months are freed from the past—have them fresh and clean as when they first came from the great storehouse of time. Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts. Do not attempt to make the whole batch at one time (too much haste spoils the entire lot) rather, prepare one day at a time. Into each day put equal parts of faith, patience, courage, work (some people omit this ingredient and thereby spoil the flavor of the entire year), hope, fidelity, liberality, kindness, rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad dressing—don’t do it), prayer, meditation, and one well-selected resolution. Put in about one teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and a heaping helping of good humor. Bon Appetite and Happy New Year!

ASK THE DR. Dear Dr. Gabe As the months get colder, I notice I am more prone to getting the flu. How can I avoid getting the flu, and how can the people affected keep it from spreading? Dear Reader,

DUSYA Dusya is a sweet 4 year old Cashmere cat and is looking for a place to call her forever home, as she was sadly left behind by her first family when they decided to leave the country. She is medium sized and has short hair with a beautiful and velvety soft coat. This lovely lady loves chin rubs and lap time and gets along with children and other cats. It would be the greatest Christmas gift to Dusya to be in your loving home. She is fully vaccinated, micro chipped and spayed. For adoption queries email animal.action@hotmail. com.

Thank you for such a timely question. Preventing the flu i s simple and easy. Fi rst get a flu shot, and second wash your hands frequently, especially after shaking another person's hands or being out in public. We can prevent the spread of the flu and other viruses by encouraging everyone to get the flu shot, washing our hands frequently, and avoiding contact with people when we are feeling sick. Be well, Dr. Gabe The doctor is always on call at The Source and asking the right questions can lead to better health. Dr. Gabriel comes to us from Oasis Hospital, where he practices family medicine. Simply send your questions to askthedoctor@thesourceuae.com and see them answered and published in the magazine.

WRECKING LOVE Dutchman's proposal ends in crane crashing into neighbor's house

A Dutchman rented a crane to descend to his girlfriend's window and propose in an unconventional way. However, things went awry when the crane crashed into the roof of a neighbor’s house, making people wonder if it's safe for the bride to say "I do?" All other proposal scenarios looked boring and uninspired. So, the unidentified man in the central Dutch town of Ijsselstein decided to hire a crane to carry him to his loved one's bedroom window. There, looking into his lover's eyes from the height of the second floor, he planned to play a song and pop the million-dollar question. But in next to no time the unsecured crane toppled into a neighbor's house, emergency services spokesman Jelle Mulder told AFP. What's even worse, during an attempt to right it, the crane slipped and fell on the house again. Neighboring houses have been evacuated and luckily no one was hurt. "The people in the house the crane fell on are deeply shocked," the 'hero of the day' said. Local authorities will decide whether the house needs to be demolished after the crane is lifted. Meanwhile, the fearless girlfriend did accept the marriage proposal, Dutch media reported. The lovebirds have gone on a Parisian holiday to celebrate.

Abu Dhabi utility bills to go up from January 1 Worker gropes teenaged girl in mall A worker allegedly groped the lower back of a 13-year-old girl who was with her mother in Dragon Mall, the Dubai Criminal Court heard. On July 18, at around 3.30pm, IN, 42, Qatari, was with her daughter in Dragon Mall.

Residents in Abu Dhabi will see a rise in their water and electricity bills from January 1, 2015. The increase in fee structure has been updated online by the Regulation and Supervision Bureau of Abu Dhabi. Expatriates will have to pay between Dh5.95 and Dh9.90 for every 1,000 litres of water used. Earlier, it was billed at Dh2.20. If it increases the daily consumption limit of up to 700 litres for apartments and over 5,000 litres for villas, they will be charged at Dh9.90. UAE nationals, who until now were not charged for water consumption, will have to pay. They will be charged between Dh1.70 and Dh1.89 for every 1,000 litres

of water consumed. This would also depend on whether they reside in a villa or an apartment. Electricity fees for UAE nationals will remain 5fils for each kilowatt-hour, and an extra 5.5fils will be charged for each kWh exceeding the 30 kWh day-limit. Electricity fees for expats have increased from 15 fils per kWh to 21 fils per kWh for up to 20 kWh a day for apartments, and up to 200 kWh for villa. Anything exceeding the limit will be charged 31.8 fils for each kWh.

Molester gets 'good smack' from wife's husband and brother

A man from another Gulf country thought it was his lucky day when he saw a pretty woman taking the lift in a major shopping mall in Sharjah. But later he was surely convinced that it was his worst day. Just after the lift shut and moved down, the impatient man stretched his hand and touched the woman, who screamed and managed to text her husband waiting for his wife downstairs with her brother. 10

“As the lift opened, the husband and his brother-in-law grabbed the man, pushed him down and started punching him,” the Arabic language daily ‘Al Khaleej’ said. “The wife told court that the man clearly did not realise the situation in which he put himself in…she said that as the lift opened, the man found himself grabbed by her husband and brother, who gave him a good smack before calling the police.”

“I was surprised when my daughter asked me to leave the place though we had not finished shopping. Asking her about the reason, she told me about a man who had groped her lower back twice. She also told me that he is video recording her. Looking in his direction, I saw him sitting on a chair, looking at his mobile phone which he was holding with its back side facing the shop that we were in,” the mother told investigators. The mother immediately informed the police who came and arrested MN, 36, Pakistani worker. The girl told police that the man was following her and her mother after he had groped her lower back twice. He was also taking pictures of her. Police found 89 pictures of women and children in the mobile phone of the accused. The court will give its sentence on January 29.

Cop, friend jailed 6 years for extortion

A court in Khorfakkan sentenced a policeman and a friend to six years in prison after they were found guilty of embezzling Dh45,000 from a man. The two were arrested after they were found to have called that man and told him that there was a report against him and that he must pay that sum. “The court found that the policeman used his job to extort money from that man…it also found his friend guilty of helping him,” ‘Al Khaleej’ daily said.

EAD officially welcomes environment enthusiasts to

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

Throughout the past few months, EAD’s terrestrial biodiversity team have made significant developments to ensure the interactive and friendly atmosphere of the Al Wathba Wetland eco-reserve, while preserving its natural heritage. Upon arrival at the reserve, visitors have the opportunity to check in at the newly built Visitor Experience Centre, watch a short movie about the significance of Al Wathba Wetland Reserve and then embark on one of the self-guided trails that have been mapped out by EAD’s specialist team. The trails, with interpretive signage, provides visitors with the opportunity to walk through the reserve’s natural terrains and familiarise themselves with the various bird species that reside in Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. The track ends at the bird hide facility which offers visitors a unique experience to observe Al Wathba’s flamingos up close and personal. Additional facilities such as restrooms and parking spaces have also been integrated within the eco-reserve to facilitate to the visitors’ needs. Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Executive Director, Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector at EAD commented: “Abu Dhabi presents a rich and diverse terrain which is home to various species across air, land and sea. With the opening of Al Wathba Wetland Reserve to the public, the residents of Abu Dhabi have been given the opportunity to reconnect with the natural heritage that

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve was officially declared as a protected area in 1998 by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as it proved to be the ideal habitat for migratory birds and a significant breeding site for the Greater flamingos. Since 2011, flamingos have regularly bred in Al Wathba, making it the only site in the UAE and in the Arabian Gulf where this species regularly breeds. In 2013, the reserve achieved its international recognition when it joined more than 2,000 worldwide wetlands as a Ramsar site, making it Abu Dhabi’s first Ramsar site. With over 200 migratory birds, 11 mammals, 10 reptiles and over 35 plant species, Al Wathba Wetland Reserve offers visitors a complete experience and a true understanding if the importance of conservation in Abu Dhabi. exists within the Emirate. Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, in specific, is considered to be an important area for biodiversity conservation for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.” "By opening the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve to the public, we are providing our community specially the school and university students with greater access to these protected areas, to enhance their environmental awareness and to connect with nature that will help them to conduct scientific studies and research, while witnessing how EAD is protecting its rich biodiversity” Dr Shaikha added.

Public interested in exploring the ecoreserves are encouraged to pre-register for the visits through EAD website www. ead.ae as visits are strictly by appointment only, to control visitors’ number which will help EAD to manage the reserve and ensure the protection and preservation of its habitats, fauna and flora. After filling in the registration form and determining the number of visitors, EAD’s eco-reserve team will contact the registered one to let them know if they can accommodate their request and provide them with a booking number.

Star Wars Rechargeable Mini Speaker

For the desperate physical keyboard fan Star Wars Rechargeable Mini Speakers come in two flavors: R2-D2 and Darth Vader. While that technically makes them on opposite sides of the war, they function exactly the same. Plug them into a USB port and they'll charge up. When they're charged, use the other head of the cable to plug the speaker into any 3.5mm headphone jack. Press the speaker down, and you're ready to pump out the tunes.

Typo keyboards is betting that many of you like your iPhone 6, but really wish you had a physical keyboard to make hammering out lengthy messages that much easier. To that end, the company has created keyboard cases you can slide your iPhone into, bringing the physical keyboard experience to devices that have long since left them behind. It's the successor to the ill-fated Typo keyboard, a nigh-identical device that bore more than a passing resemblance to

BlackBerry hardware, which led to litigation The Typo2 offers a slightly different layout, but the general idea remains the same: slide your phone into the case, connect via Bluetooth, and you've got a physical keyboard for your iPhone 6. Whether or not it's worth the $99 price of admission is wholly dependent on how badly you want a physical keyboard on your smartphone.

HTC Desire 620 is a budget 5-inch phone

Converge Pop USB Hub & Docking Station Converge Pop USB Hub & Docking Station is the futon of charging hubs. It unfolds (like a futon... sort of), and it reminds us of a bendy futon mattress. Instead of holding your exhausted body, though, Converge Pop USB Hub & Docking Station holds your electronics - specifically, those that feed on USB. The gadgets sit on the ledge, while the cables hide in the back (secured with silicone loops). Just plug the power source into your nearest outlet and you can charge up to 4 USB devices while they chill out on the Converge Pop USB Hub & Docking Station. Includes 4 USB outlets. HTC has a new addition to its more affordable mid-range Desire smartphones. Called the Desire 620, this 5-inch Android KitKat phone comes with a 720p display, a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 4G LTE connectivity. Most importantly, it looks terrific - that two-tone plastic body really stands out among the slew of black and grey rectangles you normally see with midrange phones. It's due to hit stores from early next year so far, O2 is the only network to announce plans to stock the phone, although no prices have yet been announced. HTC has promised it will have an "affordable price tag", however. The Desire 620 follows the same design

scheme as other recent phones such as the Desire 820, launched in Berlin earlier this year, and the Desire Eye. It has a onepiece plastic shell, which has been given a cool two-tone effect. It'll come in three colours: two-shade grey, white with orange, and white with blue. I'm really rather keen on this approach -- it's attractive, it's fun and it helps them stand out from many other cheap and midrange phones, which are usually saddled with rather dull, grey designs. The white and orange one is particularly snazzy. Its 5-inch display means it's not a small phone. It measures 150mm long, 73mm wide and 9.6mm thick (5.9 by 2.9 by 0.4 inches).

Festive celebrations at Al Ain's finest addresses

Every year leading up to the Festive Season, our hotel friends in Al Ain are abuzz with preparations for Santa’s big

day, and a huge part of these preparations

always include the highly anticipated Christmas tree lighting events.

It is a time of love, joy, and high spirits,

and above all, an opportunity for the

finest residences in the city to give back to their community; especially to the many children of Al Ain, whose eyes light up

with the magic of Santa as he distributes his gifts. This year, Al Ain’s ambassadors of hospitality, once again, went overboard ensuring all things festive were in high gear and the celebrations went off in their usual impeccable style.

We have compiled a collection of

photographs highlighting the various events from around town and would like to send a very special thank you to all Al Ain Rotana lights its Christmas tree and the spirits of all who attended

alls around the UAE are decorated with snowflakes, while towering, twinkling trees grace the lobbies of luxury hotels. By now, kids have been assured that Santa will find his way through the streets of Al Ain to deliver gifts just as he did in their native country. Evenings are spent sipping hot chocolate and baking Christmas cookies, right? The reality is most busy women barely have time to enjoy the sights and sounds of the holidays. They are nursing gift wrap induced paper cuts as they find places to hide presents until the big day. They juggle their careers and family obligations and then we add gift buying and holiday entertaining, making a normally busy lifestyle into one that is downright chaotic. Well, at least you have dinner covered; don’t you? Thanks to Anthony Powell’s catering service, Our Cajun Kitchen, preparing dinner doesn’t have to add to your stress. Whether you are ordering one meal or catering a party, you can have flavorful comfort food delivered for free to your doorstep. Anthony hails from Chicago, but grew up watching

his grandmother work her magic in her New Orlean’s kitchen. He decided to bring Cajun and Creole flavors to Al Ain when he and his wife moved here a few years ago. His extensive menu of entrees includes Southern favorites such as baked or fried chicken, blackened fish, Cajun meatloaf and shrimp gumbo. However, Anthony says his wings are the biggest hit with customers. You can have them with your choice of either spicy Buffalo sauce or his homemade honey barbeque sauce. Other offerings include pulled chicken sandwiches and an array of scrumptious fresh baked pies. Everything is packed in oven ready or microwaveable containers so you can quickly heat and serve them hungry bellies. Weekly specials include an entrée, two large side dishes such as creamy mac and cheese, spicy cornbread and dessert all for under 60dhs. Trying to watch your budget AND your figure this season? Try the grilled chicken salad, southern green beans or stir fried vegetables. Anthony was a registered nurse in the US and can cater to all dietary needs. When asked what sets his food apart from other places in Al Ain, Anthony remarked, “Everything…everything is made from scratch. Nothing is frozen or comes from a box. The food is very flavorful and fresh.” He even makes his own poultry seasoning to keep flavors authentic. He added, “All items are halal and you can customize the level of spiciness to your taste.”

If you are planning a New Year’ soiree but are looking to offer more than just cheese and crackers, consider Our Cajun Kitchen’s New Year’s special. Wow your guests with a Southern classic meal of black eyed peas (said to bring good luck) and rice with Cajun fried chicken, collard greens, spicy cornbread muffins and a sweet finish of pecan pie. With reasonable prices and friendly service, Our Cajun Kitchen will definitely be on my speed dial list. This spring Anthony is anticipating the opening of his new Cajun Creole restaurant here in Al Ain. The Phrase Fathers Fear Most On Christmas Day

T By: Tim Herrera

here are three words often heard at this time of year that strike fear into the hearts of fathers everywhere. Those three words can crush the spirit of even the most capable Dad. Those words: “Some assembly required.”My children have now grown beyond the stage where every blasted Christmas gift they receive needs to be constructed using tools thinner than sewing needles by the skillful, unwavering hands of a neurosurgeon. I cannot tell you how many times I have cursed Santa’s elves – or the blue-vested Toys-R-Us guys – for not pre-assembling the mountains of toys my kids have received over the years. I have the scarred knuckles to prove my point. “Come see what Santa brought us!” our kids would yell when they were very little or “Daddy, why are your hands bandaged and packed in ice?” It’s easier when kids are very small. Many of their Christmas

18

The Source

toys come pre-assembled. In fact, many come in one piece. Parents just remove the expensive gadgets from their boxes; make sure all the bells ring and the buzzers sound. Then we put the toys on the shelves because the kids are too busy exploring the empty boxes rather than enjoying the whizbang educational SAT improving PBS and pediatrician approved learning plaything we just bought, thanks to a bank loan. “Some assembly required.” That phrase echoes in my head like Edgar Allan Poe’s raven, or that abrasive duck from the insurance commercials. It’s harder when the kids are at that in-between age where they are too young to assemble toys themselves and too young to be of any help whatsoever. “Hey, pal, please hand me the screwdriver.” You mean this?”“No. That’s a garden hose. The screwdriver is the long metal thing with the plastic handle.”“You mean that?”“No. That’s a shovel that we use to clean up after the dog. Never mind. Go get Mommy for me now that I’m pinned under this basketball hoop and can’t move. Tell Mommy that Daddy is losing consciousness.” Now that three of our kids are teenagers and one is an almost-teen, gift giving doesn’t involve

Craftsman tools, words under my breath or directions written in Swedish. The only knuckle scraping I experience now, comes from constantly reaching into my back pocket for my wallet. And the only blood loss I risk comes from putting things in envelopes and risking paper cuts. “Merry Christmas, Sweetheart!” Here’s a Target gift card to keep along with your Borders gift card and your Blockbuster gift card!” I know that giving gift cards seem like the lazy man’s way out. There are times when I look back sentimentally on those past Christmas Eves, where my wife and I stayed up until 3:00 a.m. struggling to follow the directions for assembling dollhouses, bicycles or life-sized Bat caves. Our hands shook from overwork and from downing two-liter bottles of Diet Coke to stay awake. Our eyes were tired and crossed from trying to connect too many slots “A” to slots “B”. Then after getting about twenty minutes of sleep, the kids would stampede into the bedroom announcing that Santa left behind a mountain of toys, and several empty plastic soda bottles.

Living on the Edge:

Traveling While Breastfeeding

T

ravel season is upon us once again. I'm bursting at the seams with both excitement and a bit of left over baby weight. Visiting family and my home country is always an exciting time; however, as a mom of three, with my eldest being three and my youngest a mere four months, the thought of traveling is intimidating. I've done it plenty of times but now, with an additional child and breastfeeding, I am unsure of what to expect. I spent weeks making a mental checklist of the things I need to do in order to make this 19-hour travel period go as smoothly as possible. It wasn't until I found myself calling a dry ice distributor that I truly realized that breastfeeding while traveling is not to be taken lightly. Traveling with children can be a daunting task for any parent. I love my littles, but the idea of sitting in tight places with them for approximately 24 hours, almost brings me to tears. Fortunately, my oldest two, for the most part, are covered, and I feel ready to travel with them. My four month old, however, is a different beast. Because of him, like a madwoman, I am going to attempt to carry 20 bags of frozen breast milk across the world. After hunting down several businesses and speaking with three different representatives from my airline to confirm and re-confirm their regulations regarding dry ice, I can attest to the breastfeeding mommas' struggle; while the breast may be the best, it is by no means easy. Traveling is

20

The Source

not exempt. In an attempt to make myself feel better, I compiled a list of advantages and disadvantages of breastfeeding while traveling. ADVANTAGE • Bottle-free travel - Although I’m lugging what seems like caseloads of breast milk across the world, it’s nothing compared to loading up on formula and bottles. I can pack light as I’m all that my baby needs for food. •

No spills or messes - I don't have to worry about milk or formula powder staining what I will have to wear for almost a day.

No crying baby - I am my child's pacifier so at least I will not have the added stress of a distraught infant. This alone may be worth it!

DISADVANTAGE • Dehydration - Cotton-mouth is already a common long travel ailment. Nursing a child diminishes any fluid that my body manages to retain and I'm usually left feeling quite pruneesque during my flight. •

My travel attire will be covered by a not-so-fashionable breast feeding cover. There really is no point removing it, as I’m sure my son will nurse more frequently on the flight than he does normally.

Carrying an ice chest - I’m going to be anxious the entire flight (19 hours!) wondering if my precious cargo will make it in one piece.

I’ll breathe a sigh of relief upon landing in my

native country and retrieving my ice chest. Until then, I would like to wish Godspeed to all of the mommas daring to travel this holiday season while breastfeeding. Giving our children what we believe is best is, for sure, worth every ounce of temporary insanity.

The Three Wise Men Visit Oasis Hospital

I

n keeping with the tradition of Christmas and as an added measure of respect for this part of the world, Oasis Hospital salutes the story of the 3 wise men, kings or magi with a reenactment of the infamous scene at their hospital every Christmas.

After Jesus was born, Wise Men came to look for Him, probably from an area which is now in Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia or Yemen. Although they are often called the 'Three Kings', the Bible does not say how many there were, or that they were kings. One theory is that they might have been Kings of Yemen, as during this time, the Kings of Yemen were Jews. Three, is only a guess because they brought with them three gifts: gold, myrrh and frankincense. They were definitely men of learning often referred to as Magi. The word Magi comes 22

from the Greek word 'magos' (where the English word 'magic' comes from). Magos itself comes from the Old Persian word 'Magupati'. This was the title given to priests in a sect of the ancient Persian religions such as Zoroastrianism. Today we would refer to them as astrologers. Back then astronomy and astrology were part of the same overall studies and went hand in hand with each other. The Magi would have followed the patterns of the stars religiously. They would

No one really knows what the new star in the sky was, and there are many theories including comets, supernovas, a conjunction of planets or something supernatural! The annual visit of the Three Kings in Al Ain is rapidly becoming one of the essential Christmas traditions of the city and many people commented that the event was bigger, busier and better than last year. There was a popcorn and cotton candy stand, desert chill ice creams, and a henna artist. Various departments from around

the hospital and Al Ain also hosted stands offering information and fun stuff from free Christmas cookies to helium balloons. The Oasis Hospital Pediatrics department provided colouring books and facepainting. Hundreds of people from all walks of the Al Ain community turned up to enjoy the day. The event opened with carols led by The AAEC church choir and bible readings of the Christmas story in both Arabic and English (Trey led, Gabi Halabi, from customer service, read the Arabic). The readings focused on the journey of the three Magi (or wise men), who travelled from the East to find Jesus and worship him. Then the three camels arrived bearing the three Magi, all of whom were carrying large chests full of sweets for the children! The identity of the Magi is always a very well kept secret, even inside the hospital. This year, family favourite and The Source’s own Dr. Gabe took on the role, along with Trevor Bunch, Chief Technical Officer - with a very convincing beard, and Man Bohara, one of the hospitals’ cleaning staff. The fun continued, along with camel rides for those who wanted them and photos with the Magi.

INSOMNIA

W

e all have busy lives and just when we are most tired, we can’t fall asleep. Insomnia means the inability to sleep. From time to time, all of us have trouble sleeping. Insomnia is a problem if it affects your alertness in the day or affects your mood negatively. People who have insomnia complain of difficulty falling asleep, waking up often in the night and having trouble falling asleep again, waking up too early in the morning or feeling tired when they awaken.

are often associated with significant life stressors. This can be due to a loss of job or loved one, divorce or moving to a different place. Other reasons include experiencing emotional or physical discomfort, medications, interferences in normal sleep schedules or anxiety and depression.

Generally there are two types of insomnia: primary and secondary. Primary occurs when there is a direct link to the lack of sleep and health issues. Secondary is when the result is a clear health condition such as asthma and arthritis or there is a certain medication that causes the insomnia. Insomnia can also be short term and long term. It can come and go. The person affected can have periods of time when they have no sleep issues. Long term insomnia is the term used when the person can’t sleep for at least three nights per week for a month or longer. It can be due to depression, anxiety, chronic stress or pain and discomfort at night.

Sleep at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning. Avoid day time naps because you can lose your night sleep this way.

Avoid caffeine and nicotine late in the day. These are stimulants and keep you awake.

Get regular exercise. Try not to exercise close to bedtime, because it may stimulate you and make it hard to fall asleep. Avoid exercising, preferably three to four hours before bed time.

Don't eat a heavy meal late in the day. A light snack before bed can actually help you fall asleep.

Check your sleeping environment. The room that you sleep in should be dark, quiet and the right temperature for you. If you feel it is noisy, you can use a fan to generate background noise and cover up other sounds. Many parents

Follow a winding down routine to help you relax, such as reading a book, listening to soft music or taking a warm bath. If you find yourself lying awake worrying about things, try making a to-do list before you go to bed. This may help prevent focusing on those worries overnight. If you find yourself wide awake in bed and not the least bit sleepy, you can get up for a while and read or do some activity before attempting to sleep again.

Short term insomnia may not need treatment and can be adjusted by making lifestyle changes. Long term insomnia needs evaluation for underlying conditions and health issues. Consult your doctor if you feel that you have had insomnia for a while now.

l Ain born and bred, Nasser Al Kayoumi is a young man on a mission to reintroduce wholesome living to his community. He is the middle child of a family of three boys and four girls who studied E business management at HCT, Al Ain and is now the CEO and proud owner of ‘Organic and more’, an organic foods and product supplier located in the Al Mada complex beside Al Noor Hospital. What inspired you to pursue this particular business venture?

“We live in a world of fast processed foods filled with toxins and my goal is to bring the public back to a sustainable style of living and eating that was enjoyed by our ancestors. Initially my plan was to open a restaurant focusing on organic meals but I came to the conclusion that people do not eat out every day, and if I provided wholesome foods for their pantries, I would be enabling them to cook and eat healthy every day instead of only on occasions.” How has the response been in the short time since opening your store?

Nasser Al Kayoumi Brings health and nutrition back to your dinner table By Farid Nouisser

“The overall response since opening our doors 2 months ago has been much better than expected. We have not yet advertised or been able to execute the many events and promotional initiatives we have planned to increase the necessary awareness and in spite of this, are receiving a good mix of both expats and Nationals and look forward to much greater volume as we expand our products and even add home delivery to our agenda.” Is the organic food industry becoming a competitive market in the UAE? “It is definitely increasing in popularity and I chose Al Ain because it is home and lacks, for the most part, a good selection of products. There are a few other companies based in Dubai that deliver to our city but our prices are better and our selection goes far beyond what some of the larger players like Lu Lu and Carrefour are offering.” Does the higher cost of organic products present a major problem to a business such as yours? This is an excellent question and the solution to this problem is an increased public awareness about the dangers to both the sustainability of our planet and the health and well being of life in general on earth if we continue our current agricultural practices! First off, I should mention that we keep our profit margins very low to better facilitate what all people deserve – healthy, wholesome food and a thriving planet that will sustain optimal living conditions for us and future generations. The Question we must ask ourselves is can we afford not to eat and farm organically? Let’s examine some of the reasons why we should choose organic foods: 1. Avoid chemicals Eating organically is the only way of avoiding astronomical amounts of toxic chemical poisons. 2. Benefit from more nutrients Organically grown foods have more nutrients—vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and micronutrients— than commercially grown foods because the soil is managed and nourished with sustainable practices by responsible standards. 3. Enjoy better taste Better nourished and balanced soil produces stronger, healthier and better tasting produce – it’s as simple as that!

4. Avoid GMO Genetically engineered (GE) food and genetically modified organisms (GMO) are contaminating our food supply at an alarming rate, with repercussions beyond understanding. This is a topic of discussion that the general public should educate themselves on! Our advice is to avoid these GMO’s at any cost and staying organic is a sure fire way of protecting yourself!

to leave our readers with a few words of inspiration and this is what he shared: “The small planet that we share is a beautiful place and we have a collective responsibility to nurture it, not only for ourselves, but for the well being of future generations. At Organic and more, we are doing our small part and hope that our friends in Al Ain will visit us and help in the creation of a better tomorrow.

5. Avoid hormones, antibiotics and drugs in animal products This is another issue of major concern with unimaginable long term repercussions. Many scientists and experts warn that rampant use of antibiotics in animal feed, like penicillin and tetracycline, will breed an epidemic that medicine has no defense against. 6. Preserve our ecosystems Organic farming supports eco-sustenance, or farming in harmony with nature. 7. Reduce pollution and protect water and soil Agricultural chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers are contaminating our environment. Organic farming does not allow the use of these chemicals. 8. Preserve agricultural diversity Leaning heavily on one or two varieties of a given food is a formula for devastation. It was not only an extreme pleasure to spend some quality time with Nasser Al Kayoumi; it was also a great learning experience. Before saying good-bye, I asked Nasser

Karan Johar to direct Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

George Clooney Takes Over Downton Abbey for Charity He’s already Hollywood royalty, but now George Clooney has become an Earl – in the world of Downton Abbey, anyway. Clooney assumed his long-awaited and temporary role in the British aristocracy in a special 9-minute episode of the show for the TV fundraiser Text Santa. In the hilarious tongue-in-cheek video above, Lord Grantham – with the help of Ab Fab’s Patsy Stone! – sees what life would be like at the Abbey if he were replaced by a certain George Oceans Gravity, Marquis of Hollywood – otherwise known as Lord Hollywood. And we’ll just say Downton has been turned upside down by Clooney’s

charms. In fact, Lord Hollywood had such an effect on Dame Maggie Smith’s character, the Dowager Countess, that when he kissed her hand she fell off her perch and collapsed on the floor. “That man has got the entire household behaving like fools!” Lord Grantham says, after seeing how his loved ones behave without his influence. “Downton has gone to rack and ruin without me.” Luckily, the whole thing was just a bad dream. Text Santa is a charity fundraiser that helps support a string of U.K.-based cancer and children’s charities.

Karan Johar is perhaps the happiest soul today! His wish to direct Aishwarya RaiBachchan in a film is finally coming true. Titled Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, this film will see Aishwarya along with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. Post her hiatus, Ash had signed Jazbaa and this is her second announced outing! The elated K Jo says, “I am extremely excited to direct them (Ranbir and Anushka, because of their undying chemistry). Ae Dil Hai Mushkil also fulfils my big dream to work with Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan. It is possibly her most unusual and contemporary character and I can’t wait to work with her.” The film is scheduled for a 2016 release and is “very musical” and “dwells deeply on relationships, heartbreaks and how love completes you, defines you and yet leaves you wanting for more”.

Kim Kardashian Loses 1.3 Million Followers

After the social media application deleted inactive and spam accounts, while Kim Kardashian was a victim of Thursday’s Instagram Rapture, she also emerged from the purge with an impressive new title: the most-followed Insta-celeb. In the social media application’s effort to delete inactive and spam accounts, many users saw a drop in their follower count, including Kardashian. The reality star, who recently tried to break the Internet with her Paper Magazine cover, lost 1.3 million of her 23 million Instagram followers.

28

The Source

She now has more followers than Justin Bieber, who said goodbye to more than 3.5 million of his 23 million Instagram followers. Kardashian and Bieber weren’t the only celebrities to see a major drop.

Madonna released six new songs from an unreleased album on Saturday, in a surprise move meant to counter the leak of “incomplete” tracks that were shared online earlier in the week. Madonna called the surprise release an “early Christmas gift” to her fans, she hoped the completed tracks might deter fans from listening to the leaked songs, which she said were unfinished demos that were not yet ready for release. The songs come from her newest album, Rebel Heart, which was slated for a March release date. Her publicist said the singer would release more tracks on February 9.

Bringing Christmas to Al Ain

W

hether you celebrate Christmas, Noel or Yule, there is no doubt that you’ll have your own family traditions that Christmas just isn’t the same without. For a British expat living in the UAE, away from family, street carolling and snow, I’ve learned it’s important to create our own traditions to make the festival special even when we’re away from home. One of the joys of expat life is being able to borrow from other cultures that we meet. In my house Christmas didn’t start until Christmas Eve – our house was magically transformed from its cold, winter dullness as we slept. Father Christmas didn’t just bring presents; he also decorated our house, put up the tree and filled our waiting stockings with tiny gifts and clementines. In Pakistan, my husband’s household started celebrating Christmas a day earlier – sending carollers around the streets of the Christian community, sneakily swapping

round neighbours’ Christmas trees and attending midnight mass to start the celebrations on Christmas Eve. I can’t remember a Christmas where we didn’t have guests in the house, often people collected at church that morning, and a number of extra parcels were always placed under the tree for our post lunch gift opening. Moving to the UAE, this is one of two traditions I’ve chosen to keep – along with listening to the Queen’s Speech every Christmas afternoon, broadcast live at 3pm UK time; a vital part of the traditional British Christmas! We’ve chosen not to continue the tradition of tree stealing, but Pakistani cuisine rules in our Christmas kitchen. In Germany, a big part of Christmas is going into a freezing forest to cut the family Christmas tree. Marja Kohn, of the Hili Rayhaan Rotana, remembers this. ‘Around the 20th of December, we went with our saw or axe and looked around the forest to find the Christmas tree we liked. Very often it was really snowy!’ But the season begins at least a month earlier for her family. ‘In Germany baking is very important. My mom used to make 17 different types of cookie, all before advent started. I don’t make so many,’ she laughs, ‘but I always bake with the kids. They love to invite friends to

decorate gingerbread houses on the last day of the school term. We have also started a new tradition of reading the Christmas story to the children on Christmas Eve.’ Jessica Hulsey is behind Al Ain’s most unique Christmas tradition, the 3 Camels at Oasis Hospital. Originally from America, going carolling to friend’s homes was an important part of her season, as was spending Christmas Day with her grandparents and family. So how does she celebrate here? ‘My favourite tradition is still, listening to carols and putting up the tree. On Christmas Eve we’ll have people from work and other friends to our house. On Christmas Day we’ll go out to the desert; both from a religious point of view and a family point of view. Christmas is about relationships and I love that. It’s a time of year that warms my heart - the importance of God wanting a relationship with us.’ So whether it’s hotel Christmas tree lightings, desert barbecues or baking gingerbread houses, there are plenty of ways to make the season special in the UAE. Celebrate the reason and enjoy the season creating wonderful traditions and memories for your family.

The Brighton College Scholarship Programme is Back! By Farid Nouisser

The buzz is back; scholarships are now available for 3-5 year olds at a 25% fee remission, making Brighton the most affordable A-banded UK school in Al Ain. Also up for grabs are: Academic, All-Rounder, Drama, Music and Sports Scholarships! This year my wife and I made a decision that has proven by far, to be the best decision of the year; we enrolled our eldest boy at Brighton College. I am not telling you this as the managing director of The Source, rather as a parent without reservation and encouraging other parents in Al Ain to also consider giving their children the best education available in our city. It is our duty as parents to provide our children with a solid start in life, preparing them for what the future has in store, and an essential part of that preparation is a foundation

of knowledge steering them on a course towards success! Canada, our homeland, boasts a competitive and high standard of public education on a global scale but we have come to realize, in a few short months, that this heralded curriculum is no match for the innovative approach Brighton College pursues in producing well rounded, enthusiastic and respectful young adults. School fees are, no doubt, an issue of concern to any parent paying out of pocket, without company allowances, and although we initially struggled with the question of can we afford it?; we eventually asked ourselves the most important question of all – can we afford not to send our son to Brighton? One term later, the ‘proof is in the pudding’! The level of improvement we have witnessed in overall academic, artistic and spiritual achievements have been phenomenal.

Our son is now enthusiastic about putting on his uniform and ventures to school each morning armed with the most important of all agendas – a love for learning. Four months of Arabic have already surpassed the previous three years of Arabic classes at his last school by bounds and leaps and thanks to an inspiring teacher, he is now able to speak in full sentences and even write at a level that astounds his mother and me. I could continue but instead, encourage you to attend the Open Evening at Brighton College on January 21st, from 6 – 8 PM, where you will have the opportunity to be properly introduced to an outstanding school and discover for yourself, an ethos of education that has placed Brighton at the pinnacle of learning institutions in both Al Ain and the UAE.

ADVENTURES IN THE SERENGETI By: Rhiannon Downie

In part two of our African Adventure mini-series, our honeymooner – Rhiannon Downie, founding editor of BrideClubME.com – spends three days at a Serengeti lodge regularly voted one of the top safari escapes on the planet

T

he morning I was dreading arrived – I truly hate flying, so the thought of getting into a small bush plane scared me senseless. Despite my fears, the one-hour flight to the Serengeti National Park wasn’t too bad, and I had the hand of a fellow passenger to hold, since hubby and I got separated

on the aircraft. Anne was super sweet, allowing a total stranger to tightly grip her hand. We flew over the Ngorongoro Crater all the way to the most northern part of the Serengeti, close to the border with Kenya. As the plains stretched out before us, the vastness of the Serengeti became real. At the Kogatende airstrip, we were collected by our driver, Emmanuel, and his trainee,

Promise, and we wasted no time heading out in search of leopards. After just a short while, our guide managed to spot a leopard dozing on a large rock, shaded by billowing trees. We waited patiently, mostly in silence, totally awestruck at what lay a few metres away. As the sun set, the solitary leopard awoke to hunt for food. He slowly got up, yawned, stretched and gracefully jumped down from his rock. Cautiously looking around, he stopped, walked, paused and looked directly at us. My heart was pounding, both through fear (we were in an open Jeep) and excitement. Totally calm in our presence, the leopard walked right in front of the Jeep, almost as if he was leading the way; we followed for a short while and then watched as he laid down on his back, stretched and played with his tail. I was in heaven! We then left him alone as the sun was disappearing quickly and nighttime is not the safest of times to be in the bush among wild, hungry animals.

of luxury in the wild. We had an en-suite bathroom, a spacious shower and an eggshaped bath big enough for two, which looked directly outside offering impressive Serengeti views. Fine linens and safari-chic décor offset the wilderness just beyond the canvas walls. We were spoilt with a kingsize bed and a private veranda, and were greeted with a large bottle of champagne and two glasses, a very sweet honeymoon touch.

I’ve always respected the animal kingdom, but my admiration grew tenfold when I witnessed the stress these animals endure every day just to feed and survive. I welled up in tears as I watched hundreds of zebras battling rough waters, being attacked by crocodiles and breaking legs as they tried to get from one side of the river to the other. I was heart-broken to see a baby zebra taken down by a crocodile, but such is life – the croc needed to eat too.

At the main camp, a peaceful lounge and romantic dining room opens up onto a generous deck where natural rock frames the rim-flow pool, which overlooks gamerich plains and the distant Mara River.

Our three-day experience really was the highlight of our African adventure and provided us with unforgettable memories – including the scary moment when we heard the loudest growling outside our tent at around 2am. I found out later it was a hippo.

That evening, all the guests congregated around a large open fire, with the Serengeti surrounding us, and shared our experiences, before feasting on the most delicious food and wine. I was extremely impressed – our first day at the Sayari Camp was incredible.

Luxury tented suites Back at the Sayari Camp, we were still on a high. Set close to the banks of the Mara River and boasting dramatic views across the wide plains of the northern Serengeti, the camp offers exclusive access to the greatest migration on the planet.

The following few days were not a letdown. My husband and I decided to take a rest bite from all the travelling and lazed by the pool for a day, topping up our tans. We also enjoyed massages in the privacy of our tent. But after a day of relaxing, we started to crave the adventure of the driving safaris again.

On our last evening, a private dining area was set up for us under the stars; it was so romantic and we enjoyed delicious food while discussing our Serengeti adventures. The next morning was my husband’s birthday and I’d been plotting with the camp to surprise him with breakfast in bed, topped off with a champagne toast – the perfect end to our stay. We also loved the departure message and handmade dragonfly key rings left for us by the staff at Sayari – a special touch for me personally as I collect butterflies and dragonflies.

Fifteen tasteful hillside tented suites are available, all built with an eco-conscience and beautifully decorated, offering a slice

We managed to see the ‘big five’ during our stay in the Serengeti, but one experience I will never forget is the zebra migration.
