It all began that fateful morning in the shower, to the usual sounds of my soothing voice navigating the chorus of a “classic rock tune du jour”. Without warning, the melody was interrupted by a bone chilling scream erupting from deep within, precisely at the time my 7th rib impacted with the edge of an unforgiving bath tub – Boom Boom, out went the lights! There I lay, a glistening, shampoo smothered broken frame of a man, vulnerable and in agony, now inquisitively observed by my two boys, who stood helplessly scrutinising the impairment whilst

screaming for mum to come rescue the mess. 4 or 5 minutes of wailing at the bottom of the tub does not sound like a long time but believe me, it seemed an eternity before I could gather the strength to lift my injured carcass out of the tub and onto the bathroom floor. It was truly a scene from some pathetic, yet unwritten Stephen King novel and as I waited patiently for my better half to arrive armed with first aid and boundless sympathy, the extent of my injuries became apparent with every breath I mustered. I could go on forever but the truth of the matter is that we were late and the only place I was going to find sympathy, according to my stressed out, late for work wife was in the dictionary. So off we went and the agony continued for another 4 days until pain fatigue finally got the best of me and I rushed myself to hospital for relief beyond Panadol and confirmation of one very broken rib! I am resting peacefully sedated now and welcome any offers of sympathy, gifts, gold, cash or just plain old attention from anyone out there who understands my plight. I vow to adopt the buddy system while showering from this day forward, which among other things, will bring harmony to those classic tub tunes!

Pet Fox Becomes Best Friends With A Dog

"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door. " Milton Berle

as possible,” – her mom, Jessika, told Bored Panda. “I brought Juniper home when she was only five weeks old. Moose was raised around all kinds of animals so when she ran up to him tail wagging and crying they were Moose, an Australian Shepherd mix, became instantly friends.” her guardian from the very first day Juniper was brought home. They eat together, sleep “Foxes put their butts on things they want together and Juniper acts like a little girl with to own or think is theirs. Moose gets sat on daily. I’ll often walk into the room and see a crush when she is around Moose. Moose laying down with such a glum look “Juniper is in love with Moose and spends on his face while Juniper is there just sitting all day trying to get as much of his attention in this head smiling.” Juniper, the famous pet fox, who confused a bed with snow? Turns out, she became best friends with a dog named Moose who was also rescued at a very young age.

FAKEHA Means Fruits. So if you want to say, I like all kinds of fruits, you say: Ehebo kol anwaa Al FAKEHA.

Dr. Ali: I am 6 months pregnant and I just had an ultrasound at a small clinic that informed me the amniotic fluid/water around my baby is low. What does this mean for me and my baby and what should I do next? It is extremely important to get to a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist for a proper assessment of the pregnancy and your baby if you were informed that the fluid around the baby is low. During pregnancy, amniotic fluid provides a cushion that protects the baby from injury and allows room for growth, movement and development. Amniotic fluid also keeps the umbilical cord from being compressed between the baby and the uterine wall. In addition, the amount of amniotic fluid reflects the baby's urine output — which is an important measure of a baby's well-being. Actually, the fluid around your baby is composed mainly of the baby's urine! Various factors can contribute to low amniotic fluid in pregnancy, including: A- Your water breaking (ruptured fetal membranes). B- The placenta peeling away from the inner wall of the uterus - either partially or completely - before delivery (placental abruption) C- Certain health conditions in the mother, such as chronic high blood pressure D- Use of certain medications, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors to treat high blood pressure outside pregnancy E- Certain health conditions in the baby, such as restricted growth, a kidney or urinary tract problem, or a genetic disorder If you're diagnosed with low amniotic fluid, this is a serious issue and you should immediately seek medical advice with a specialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Whether they are hoteliers, restaurateurs, executive chefs or sommeliers, the distinctive character of this association is to bring together amateurs and professionals, from all over the world in the appreciation of fine cuisine.

On May 19th, the Hilton, Al Ain played host to such a gathering and my wife and I had the pleasure of indulging in a gourmet symphony prepared and performed by an all star orchestra, courtesy of the Hilton Al Ain’s culinary team. Executive Chef Inan Dogru and the entire team on hand that evening out-sparkled the silver and crystal while exceptionally well rehearsed courses of an impeccably created menu embraced the palates of a pampered group of lucky diners. In fact, the service was so well rehearsed that at one point, I was certain that a group of synchronized swimmers were catering to our every need.

ZEN’S UP AT WADI ADVENTURE

O

n Friday, April 29th, Zen was at the top of the agenda as more than 80 people gathered at Wadi Adventure for Al Ain’s second Yogafest.

This year’s programme was unparalleled with 13 different teachers leading a wide variety of classes during the course of the day at Wadi’s beautiful and spacious Summit Event Centre. Floor to ceiling windows look out to the incredible surf pool majestically framed by Al Ain’s Jebel Hafeet. The goal of this free event was to create an awareness that ‘Yoga is for Every Body’. The youngest participants were not quite 12 weeks old and the oldest… well, quite a lot older! People of multicultural diversity came from as far away as Abu Dhabi and Dubai to join in. For some it was the first time they had stepped on a yoga mat, while

for others, it was another exceptional day spent with their passion.

People come to yoga for many different reasons and usually find so much more. Dynamic physical classes like Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Power Yoga promote strength and flexibility in both body and mind. Many athletes (from runners to weight lifters, even the New Zealand All Blacks and our very own Al Ain rugby team) now complement their training regimes with yoga to help avoid or recover from injury. However, this is only the beginning…. yoga will help you to relax and feel more balanced in your day-to-day dealings with the world. If sweating or bouncing isn’t your thing, try a Yin Yoga class. In this slow and mindful practice the body is encouraged to gradually open and release tension leaving a feeling of deep relaxation and a sense of bliss. Yoga can also help boost your energy levels and vitality and some people claim, even your libido! It helps keep you feeling and looking young and makes for an allround accentuated feeling of wellbeing that encompasses mind, body and soul.

Ultimately, yoga is about connection. Yoga is a Sanskrit word that translates as union or ‘etihad’ in Arabic. On a personal level students connect with their own bodies and often tap into a journey of the mind and consciousness. Yoga is also a way to connect with your community and reconnect with all that is beautiful and worth celebrating in life. The modern world of mobile phones, stressful workloads and hectic domestic agendas doesn’t often allow space and time to just pause, reflect and enjoy. This sense of community and connection was strongly evident at Friday’s event as complete strangers became friends sharing laughter and warm hugs. Many thanks to everyone who helped make the day a special and successful affair. The event was organized by Yoga Oasis, a friendly co-operative of yoga lovers in Al Ain. They host classes and events of all shapes and sizes around our city and love to welcome new people. Whether you are an absolute beginner or advanced in your practice, you can find out more about what they’re up to and how to get involved by simply checking out their Facebook page (Yoga Oasis UAE) or calling Wendy at 0567539778.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE AT

BRIGHTON COLLEGE

Developing pupils to meet global challenges Looking around the Al Ain National Museum one weekend recently I was struck in particular by a photograph of Al Ain’s first and only school back in 1963. A simple square building, squat in the desert with several dozen happy looking boys singing, dancing and laughing outside. Al Ain then had just one dust track as its main road and its first hospital had just opened in 1960. As a history teacher I am constantly fascinated both by the speed of change here in the UAE’s short history but also by the themes of continuity. That simple square school, standing amongst the sands, must have seemed in 1963 a real eye-opener for its boys to the world beyond the oasis city and to the opportunities brought forth through education and study. It is in the same way that I today, find myself in constant amazement at how Brighton College, standing on the very edge of the desert dunes has materialised from what seems like nowhere just three years ago and is now a thriving academic community, literally buzzing with intellectual curiosity and creativity. There is something very lifeaffirming in the idea that knowledge can grow in the most barren of places. Al Ain today is a busy modern city of over a million with two thoroughly modern universities and over seventy schools. It is therefore very exciting for me that a whole new chapter will begin for us at Brighton College this summer when we open the doors on our very first sixth form courses for our year twelve pupils. My role of head of this new sixth form centre will be to ensure that one of the very few such centres in the city turns out the very best examples of an academically rigorous British education on offer today. For those unfamiliar with British post-16 education, at Brighton College we are offering the opportunity to study Advanced Level qualifications in a wide range of subjects in preparation for admission to the world’s best universities. With exceptionally small co-educational classes and an impressive teaching staff we aim to provide the most personalised and original sixth form programme in the UAE. Our pupils enrolled so far have already set their sights high and many are thinking about where life after Sixth Form may take them – from Canada to the Netherlands and from Oxbridge to the UAEU. The regard with which British A-level qualifications are 12

held globally - itself reflective of the depth of learning involved - will equip our pupils for university applications not only in the UK but in Europe, North America, the UAE or anyway else for that matter. One of my primary goals as Head of Sixth Form will be to ensure that, regardless of the education being British, pupils are supported with their applications to the universities of their choosing, anywhere in the world. Besides very high quality teaching in small co-educational classes, the sixth form at Brighton College will provide weekly individual mentoring, access to Brighton College’s impressive range of extracurricular activities, state of the art sports and art facilities and an intimate, friendly Sixth Form common room and enrichment programme. Its aim is to produce confident, well-rounded pupils thoroughly prepared for life after sixth form and ready to meet the global challenges of our increasingly unpredictable world. Although it may be 7,000km away, Brighton College Al Ain takes values and attributes directly from its prestigious sister establishment in the UK and it is no small thing that the 170 year old Brighton College UK has a formidable reputation as the best co-educational Sixth Form provider in the country. We set ourselves the same exceptional standards and we share the same educational philosophy where the pupils are clearly at the heart of everything we do. Thinking back to the idea that education in Al Ain has embarked upon a truly remarkable journey in the last fifty years, it is at the front of my mind that to launch a school which has secured the very highest inspection reports in the Emirate in such a short space of time, can only speak volumes about the culture of continued improvement in education which is taking place at Brighton College. We are in no way a community that rests upon past success and this is very much only the beginning; indeed we are still building and continuing to improve, expand and grow just as the very best school in Al Ain did in 1963. If you would like to come and find out more about what we are doing at Brighton College and to enquire about our new post16 Sixth Form courses please do not hesitate to contact our admissions office who will be more than pleased to arrange a visit. RELEASES 14 SUCCESSFULLY REHABILITATED SEA TURTLES The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), in collaboration with the Tourism Development Investment Company (TDIC), has released 13 young critically endangered Hawksbill turtles and 1 young Loggerhead turtle on the beach of the Park Hyatt hotel, Saadiyat Island.

T

he low key event was the result of a successful rehabilitation prior to the release of the yearlings into their natural habitat. With the help of members of the public, fishermen, EAD rangers and stakeholders, these turtles were rescued over the last winter and kept under the supervision and research of the Agency. Often infested with and weighed down by barnacles, these young reptiles are sensitive to rough sea conditions and get washed ashore. Turtles with minor injuries are cared for at EAD’s facility, whereas all serious cases are sent to the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Center in Jumeirah for further veterinary care. Dr Shaikha Al Dhaheri, Director of Terrestrial of Marine and Biodiversity at EAD, said ‘The turtle release shows EAD’s commitment towards conserving endangered species through involving the community and the younger generation. By getting them closer to the species, they can connect to our natural heritage and become players in the conservation arena. Together we can do it.’ Worldwide, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List classifies the Hawksbill turtle as critically endangered. Ayesha Al Blooshi, Director of Marine Biodiversity, said ‘It’s wonderful to see the excitement on people’s faces as they get a rare opportunity to interact with these beautiful and critically endangered sea turtles up close. It’s important that the public understands that as wonderful as they are, these are endangered wild animals and must be treated appropriately and handed over to authorities for expert care. We urge the public to call 800-555 if they encounter any stranded turtles or marine life. When rescued, turtles should be kept in sea water in a container or bucket and in the shade until collected by the authorities.’ Finally, she added that ‘we would like to thank The Park Hyatt for their wonderful support today, along with our friends at Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG), TDIC and the Dubai Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center’.

THE SUGAR

FREE DIET A

re there any benefits from going sugar free? The less extreme form of the diet permits fruit (but not juices) and vegetables and restricts all added sugars, honey and processed foods that contain sugars such as sugar-sweetened drinks, confectionery, sweet snacks, biscuits, cakes, sauces, soups marinades, pastries, ice cream and desserts, sweetened yoghurt, and most, if not all, breakfast cereals. The most extreme form of this diet restricts all foods that contain added sugars. This includes any fruit and any vegetables that contain natural sugars such as peas, carrots and parsnips.

Sugar has no essential nutrients and simply contributes kilojoules. Most medical associations agree that our diets should limit sugar. It just adds unnecessary kilojoules, and like refined starches, it increases dental decay. However, there is no evidence that a totally sugar-free diet is needed.

Many sugar free diets claim that sugar is equal to having an addiction and if totally eliminated you can ‘cure’ yourself of this addiction. Some sugar-free diets claim that sugar is addictive and must be totally eliminated to ‘cure’ the addiction.

There is no scientific support for avoiding fruits and vegetables because of their natural sugar content. These foods also provide dietary fiber, minerals and vitamins. Eating more fruits and vegetables actually helps to control weight.

If you consider energy, you should know that all sugars and starches contribute 17 kilojoules/gram. Proteins have the same level of kilojoules – 17/g and fats contribute 37 kJ/g. Although a sugar-free diet will cut kilojoules from sugar itself, the key to success is because many of these foods with added sugar contain starches and fat (for example biscuits, cakes, ice cream and desserts). When the diet is effective, it is because total kilojoules fall. 18

The Source

The American Heart Association recommends that added sugars should be limited to less than 5% of total energy intake as a strategy for preventing excess weight (which is a risk factor for heart disease). The World Health Organization advises limiting added sugars to less than 10% of total energy to prevent dental caries, obesity, and chronic disease.

Research shows that fructose is problematic only in excess, and the basic problem in most cases is simply the extra kilojoules from a high intake of fructose. Research also shows that anyone who exercises regularly and pre-menopausal women, will be unlikely to have problems with fructose. Sugar does not fulfil any official definition of ‘addictive’, although once our taste buds become used to sweetness, some people will overindulge in sweet foods.

Dr. Nadia Hussain MBBS, MSc Str.M.Bio (UK), PhD Dr. Nadia Hussain is a physician with a PhD from the UAE University. Her research is based on diabetic complications. She is an educator and writer. She is also the award winning poet of the book; Fragments of my time.

Tips On Limiting Sugar Avoid foods that do not contain any necessary nutrients – for example, soft drinks and confectionery, biscuits and pastries. Limit cakes and sugary desserts. Choose natural yoghurt and add your own fruit. Check the ingredient list on breakfast cereals. Best sugar-free choices include oats or a quality muesli (check the ingredient list rather than the total sugars as this will include naturally occurring sugars in dried fruit), or any wholegrain product with less than 3% total sugars. Read the ingredient list on products such as sauces. If sugar is one of the first three ingredients on its list, try to choose a more healthy option. The best way is to make it yourself using different types of vinegar (cider or balsamic), olive oil, herbs, spices or garlic and onion. Sensible eating involves long-term commitment so it’s usually best to avoid going to extremes as this can lead to feelings of deprivation. It is more sensible to have a small piece of cake or better yet, share a dessert with a friend rather than deprive yourself and then binge on a large portion. Always check with your physician before you try any new diet, especially if you are diabetic.

hile it's always nice to have extra assistance in the form of a personal secretary, marketeer, or an accountant, say - it's also nice to cut costs. Small and medium sized businesses often can't afford to hire salaried professionals for all of those extra tasks that must be done. Fortunately, virtual help is at hand. Don't be fooled by the term "virtual," either, you’re not hiring a robot, as virtual services still utilize the skills of real people. They're just remotely located, dedicated people who don't require a benefits package you can't afford. A virtual assistant provides services and performs job functions such as: 22

If you already operate on a shoestring or need to cut costs, a virtual assistant will work on a per hour or per project pricing basis Their time is very flexible meaning a VA can work according to the needs of the client. As a marketing professional and owner of My PA For A Day, I have spent over 10 years working with entrepreneurs, writers, coaches, artists and personal trainers, to help maximize their impact in the business world. Moving their projects forward from the idea phase to concrete steps in an action plan. Virtual assistants can be a great resource for all phases of your business. Giving you personal attention, affordable outsourcing whilst offering a high level of on-going support. But how do you determine if you need one; and how and what to delegate. Here are my suggestions for creating a great working relationship with your virtual assistant. A VA can be short-term or long-term, and fill in for a specific project, or commit to

a certain amount of hours per week or month. This can be especially helpful during a crunch time or a busy season. In addition to providing professional assistance, the company or the client is not responsible for any employee-related fees or taxes, no logistical systems like providing the right software, extra office space and no obligation to grant holiday or sick leave with pay. Determine what relationship you want with your virtual assistant, rather than starting by dictating to-do lists at them. Deciding in advance whether you’re looking for a project manager or someone with a more task-oriented role, assures that you and your virtual assistant are on the same page and will prevent miss communication and uncertainty. Not having clear expectations and boundaries around the role can be frustrating. So clients have to be really clear about that want when they start working with a virtual assistant. Working with a virtual assistant allows you to delegate activities that are tedious, energy draining or simply time consuming, so you can spend more time doing work that inspires you and keeps your business moving forward. Keeping that in mind will help you decide what to delegate, what to work on and what to do with your newfound free time.

STRESSING THE IMPORTANCE OF MONITORING CHILDREN AND PROTECTING THEM FROM BAD COMPANY

NATIONAL REHABILITATION CENTER URGES FAMILIES TO GUARD AGAINST THEIR CHILDREN FALLING PREY TO DRUGS

The National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) urged families to closely monitor their children’s behaviors, keep them on track with their academic work and protect them from the dangers of drug abuse.

D

r. Ali Al Marzouqi, Director of the Public Health and Research Department at the NRC, warned parents of the seriousness of drugs, as drug abuse is not something that is simply ‘unlikely,’ but rather something that is possible, and parents are often surprised to find out that their children are drug addicted. “The NRC has dealt with many cases of parents that were shocked when they knew that their children were using drugs,” he said. Dr. Al Marzouqi also underscored the importance of prevention and care when monitoring children for the early signs of drug abuse and addiction, thereby helping to either prevent or avoid them reaching an advanced stage of drug addiction. “Drug abuse may begin as a curiosity for some people who start with small quantities. The doses gradually increase until they reach the stage of drug addiction, at which point the patient faces the negative effects of drug withdrawal when they try to stop and end up committing crimes to get more drugs to feed the addiction,” explained Dr. Al Marzouqi. The Director of Public Health and Research Department at the NRC urged the community to treat drug addicts as ‘patients’ and not to stigmatize them. “Drug addicts need the support of the whole community to address the position they have reached, as well as their family and the people in charge of their treatment, in order to enable them to resume their normal life,” noted Dr. Al Marzouqi. He pointed out that some cases of drug addiction, especially among adolescents, are a result of social, financial, family, or educational issues. “In these cases, the patient thinks that they can resolve these problems by resorting to drugs, only to fall victim to an even bigger problem,” said Al Marzouqi. “Unfortunately, the reality is that bad friends are the ones who are encouraging this group to resort to drugs. People who are unable to tolerate tough circumstances, or face life’s difficulties when there is added peer pressure, are the very people who are more vulnerable to drug abuse.” Al Marzouqi added that it is sad to see that some families

24

The Source

do not face up to the fact that their children are drug addicts, for fear of being stigmatized. “They mistakenly believe that the problem is simple and can be solved within the family, without thinking of taking their children to a rehabilitation center to be treated by specialists,” he said. He also noted that the head of the family sometimes loses faith in his drug-addicted child and kicks them out of the house. “Parents must view their drug-addicted child as a patient who needs sympathy, they must help them seek treatment and also take part in the therapeutic process themselves,” he asserted. On the same note, Dr. Al Marzouqi praised the Khalifa Student Empowerment Program’s “Aqdar” initiative, aimed at raising the awareness of drug risks. “Prevention is better than treatment,” he said. Moreover, he called for awareness and outreach campaigns across social networks to intensify and convey messages that resonate with the way the young generation think, in the hope that the initiative achieves the success it seeks. He pointed out that the National Rehabilitation Center created a strategy focused on raising awareness for prevention. “As part of this initiative, several measures were launched this year to prevent young people from falling into the clutches of drugs, including the Fawasel Program.” This five-month program was implemented for the second year in a row in a group of private schools, with the aim of strengthening the abilities of young people, especially during adolescence, to enable them to deal with pressure from bad friends. The program also trained both teachers and parents to communicate with the adolescent child in a simple way,” said Al Marzouqi. He added: “A series of awareness lectures were launched in cooperation with the Family Development Foundation, geared to parents throughout their community centers in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. An awareness campaign targeting 70 schools in the Emirate was launched in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) to raise awareness of the early signs of addiction. NFC also held periodic awareness lectures with universities, schools and employers, and provided some programs for patients to teach them the English language and how to use computers. The center concluded an agreement with Abu Dhabi Tawteen Council (ADTC) aiming to find suitable jobs for the center’s patients, while providing financial support for them and their families, as part of the center's societal role.”

6 Interesting facts about opera: In eighteenth-century opera seria (serious opera), the main singers would stand in ballet’s third position, with bent, bowlegged knees and heels together, with one ankle in front of the other. They remained in that position the entire song. The first performance of Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly was one of opera’s all-time worst flops. The audience made bird, cow, and goat calls and booed. Madama Butterfly, however, became one of the best-loved operas in history. Early opera houses were often boisterous and unruly. They were also lit by candles which—when combined with perspiration, perfume, and little ventilation—made opera night fairly ripe. The shortest opera is only seven minutes long and is Darius Milhaud’s The Deliverance of Theseus. In 1727, the Italian sopranos and rivals Faustina Bordoni (1697-1781) and Francesca Cuzzoni (1696-1778) broke into fisticuffs while singing on stage in London. After an opera, it is appropriate to yell bravo for a man and brava for a woman. If you want to cheer for two or more singers, use the plural form, which is bravi. If the group consists only of women, yell brave (BRAH-vay).

NEW CHARITABLE PROGRAMME

AIMS TO GIVE LOW INCOME FAMILIES A SUMMER BOOST Local non-profit programme BOOST, in collaboration with the Emirates Red Crescent Society, will provide sports and activities to over 100 children from low income families during hot summer months The volunteer initiative is looking for more corporate sponsors to increase the number of much needed spaces available for children non-profit programme set up to offer children from low income families the chance to attend life-changing camps is hoping to increase the number of spaces available this summer. BOOST, in collaboration with the Dubai Emirates Red Crescent, was set-up to tackle the problem of children being confined to cramped indoor spaces during the summer months – an issue that can have serious knock on effects to the child’s development as well as the stress levels and self-esteem. The voluntary led activity programme has been welcomed by many groups across Dubai and is now in search of more corporate sponsors to help increase the number of places available to children this summer and provide free safe transport to and from the summer camp partners. BOOST, which in its inaugural year, is supported by companies and individuals throughout the local community and aims to help low income families with children aged 8 – 16 years keep their kids fit, healthy and active during the hot summer holiday season, by offering free summer camp places to those who need it most. Summer camp places during the soaring 40-degree summer months are often not an option for low income earners and as a result have no choice but to leave their children inside at home as it is too hot to play outside for many. For numerous children this can contribute to

behavioural issues and can also cause tension within the family. The idea for BOOST was created by founder Tracy Fountain a Child Protection Specialist based in Dubai. Speaking about the initiative Tracy said: “Having supported several families over the past few years with practical support, there were peak times in the year when stress levels elevated and summer was one of them. Schools were closed and it became too hot for children to play outdoors and there was no family income to cover the cost of summer camps or sporting activities. I became aware that some children were staying in cramped rooms for the majority of the summer with no peer engagement or stimulation which had a detriment effect on the children’s self-esteem and behaviour.” “The BOOST ethos centres around the fact that every child deserves the opportunity to keep fit, healthy and active in the summer months and we understand how hard it can be for low income, hardworking families to make this happen. This is why we want to ensure every child in the UAE has the opportunity to access affordable sports and activities.” For the first time BOOST will be providing activities for over 100 children ages between 8 and 16 this summer. BOOST works in partnership with Dubai based schools and charities to identify families in need of support. The initiative has already secured free places in summer camps however is looking for businesses to come forward to provide free services such as bus transport, free sports kit for the children and healthy fresh packed lunches and sponsorships. If you or your company would like to support BOOST or would like more information on the programme, please visit www.boost.ae or contact info@boost.ae Contact number: 0565624721

ATLANTA (AP) - Police say actor Wendell Pierce has been arrested at an Atlanta hotel where he was a guest. Atlanta Police Department spokesman Donald Hannah says in a statement that Pierce was arrested early Saturday morning at the Loews Atlanta Hotel. New Orleans native Pierce is known for his television roles as Detective William “Bunk” Moreland on “The Wire” and Antoine Batiste on “Treme.”

Hannah says the police will share the incident report once it has been completed. No other details were available.

Red Hot Chili Peppers’s Anthony Kiedis Expected to Recover After Hospitalization Red Hot Chili Peppers’ lead singer Anthony Kiedis is expected to make a full recovery after complications of intestinal flu sent him to the hospital and forced the cancellation of the band’s show in Irvine, California, the band’s website said on Sunday. “Anthony is expected to make a full recovery soon,” according to the notice posted on redhotchilipeppers.com, which thanked fans for their support and said the band would also cancel a concert scheduled for May 17. Los Angeles radio station KROQ, which sponsors an annual event called Weenie Roast at which the band had been slated to appear Saturday night, announced the cancellation of the Irvine appearance on Twitter. “Unfortunately due to illness the @ ChiliPeppers were forced to cancel their set tonight at #WeenieRoast,” the station said in its

tweet. Officials at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre confirmed the band’s performance had been canceled and that Kiedis had been hospitalized but gave no further details, media reports said. Billboard magazine reported that Kiedis was taken from the venue in an ambulance suffering from extreme stomach pain, citing a KROQ representative. The band’s website said the cause was complications from intestinal flu on Saturday evening. “No one’s more disappointed than us that we couldn’t perform tonight. Sending love and a speedy recovery to my brother Anthony,” Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith said on Twitter. Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 60 million albums, won six Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Gulshan Devaiah is inspired by Anurag Kashyap!

Gulshan Devaiah has proved his acting abilities with films like Shaitan (2011) and Hunterrr (2015), among others. Now, for his new movie, the Bollywood actor is taking inspiration from film-maker Anurag Kashyap. A source close to the actor says, "In this new film, Gulshan will play a struggling director, who dreams of making a Bollywood film. His character belongs to a small town. He felt that Anurag will serve as a great reference point for the character, as he has

defied the norms in the Hindi film industry, and has carved a niche for himself without any godfather." When contacted, Gulshan says, "There are certain aspects of my role, for which I am using his story as my source material. As a mark of respect, I can't reveal what these stories are because some of the inspiration comes from his personal life. I have a lot of respect and gratitude for Anurag, as he gave me my first break. I am living my dream today because of that."

RECIPE

CHAKCHOUKA (Shakshouka)

"Chakchouka or Shakshouka” is a Tunisian dish of tomatoes, onions, pepper, spices, and eggs. It's usually eaten for breakfast or lunch, but I think it's tasty anytime. And it's easy to make. It is similar to the Turkish dish 'Menemen' and to the Latin American breakfast dish 'Huevos Rancheros."

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 1/3 cups chopped onion

1 cup thinly sliced bell peppers, any color

2 cloves garlic, minced, or to taste

1. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in the onion, bell peppers, and garlic; cook and stir until the vegetables have softened and the onion has turned translucent, about 5 minutes.

2 1/2 cups chopped tomatoes

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon salt

1 hot chile pepper, seeded and finely chopped, or to taste

4 eggs

2. Combine the tomatoes, cumin, paprika, salt, and chile pepper into a bowl and mix briefly. Pour the tomato mixture into the skillet, and stir to combine. 3. Simmer, uncovered, until the tomato juices have cooked off, about 10 minutes. Make four indentations in the tomato mixture for the eggs. Crack the eggs into the indentations. Cover the skillet and let the eggs cook until they're firm but not dry, about 5 minutes.

MY WORLD

Where $200K in Retirement Savings Will Last 30 Years Retiring abroad certainly has its benefits, such as cheaper healthcare, a refreshing change of scenery and a lower cost of living. That last detail is especially important for retirees who haven't saved as much as they had hoped. Fortunately, there are a number of countries where you can retire comfortably with a smaller nest egg. Living on the cheap is even easier when you're receiving Social Security benefits. As of 2016, the average benefit amount came to $1,341 for the typical retired worker. If you have $200,000 tucked away in a retirement plan, that, along with your Social Security payments, should be enough to last three decades in these eight international locales.

ECUADOR Monthly expenses for a couple including rent: $1484 Expatriates flock to Ecuador because of its gorgeous landscape, superior healthcare system and the generous government benefits extended to retirees, including discounts on utilities and public transportation. Housing is a steal in the capital city of Quito, with the monthly rent for a furnished, 900-square-foot apartment start at just $538. Utilities run $53 a month on average. Overall, Ecuador has a cost of living that's 58% cheaper than New York City. NICARAGUA Monthly expenses for a couple including rent: $1181 Nicaragua is located in the heart of Central America, and it's a premier retirement destination if you're looking for an excellent quality of life without a high price tag. The Nicaraguan government offers a number of financial incentives to attract foreign retirees, such as a sales tax exemption on construction materials if you're building a home. You need to be at least 45 years old and have a minimum monthly income of $600 to qualify, which may be appealing if you're considering an early retirement.

THAILAND Monthly expenses for a couple including rent: $1740 If you're looking for somewhere a little more exotic, it doesn't get much better than Thailand. Retirement visas are available to seniors age 50 and above who meet the minimum income standards. Specifically, you'll need a monthly income of 65,000 baht(about $1,863 USD) or 800,000 baht (about $23,000 USD) in a savings account. Bangkok is one of Thailand’s pricier cities, but even so, it's still 50%–60% cheaper than Chicago, New York or Boston. BELIZE Monthly expenses for a couple including rent: $1500 Palm trees, blue skies and sandy beaches are some of the best reasons to retire in Belize, as is the fact that it's extremely budget-friendly. Housing in Belize City is dirt cheap, with a 900-square-foot furnished rental going for as little as $377 a month. The Qualified Retired Persons Incentive Program makes it even more attractive for retirees age 45 and up since any income earned from sources outside Belize is 100% tax-free.

PANAMA Monthly expenses for a couple including rent: $2554 Panama proves to be exceptionally welcoming for retirees from all parts of the globe who come in search of a tropical atmosphere. Prices in Panama City tend to be on par with what you'd pay in the U.S., but you'll find that the surrounding smaller towns and villages are much more affordable. The Pensionado Program saves foreign retirees some extra cash by offering discounts on flights, hospital services, utilities and more. COSTA RICA Monthly expenses for a couple including rent : $1925 Costa Rica is popular with tourists, but certain areas, such as the Central Valley region and the southern coast, are ideally suited for establishing permanent residence on a shoestring. Even if you decide to set up shop in the capital city of San Jose, rental prices can go as low as $417 per month or up to $1,042, depending on the neighborhood. Utilities typically run between $48 and $79 per month, so it's definitely possible to make your retirement savings stretch. SPAIN Monthly expenses for a couple including rent: $2283 Spain features a rich culture and heritage, not to mention a cost of living that's easily affordable on a modest budget. Compared to the U.S., the cost of living is approximately 20% lower and rent prices are slashed roughly in half. Qualifying for a visa isn't an overly complicated process; you must be able to show proof of residency, proof of income and be free of any illness that constitutes a threat to public health. The Bottom Line Enjoying a satisfying retirement for less isn't impossible and $200,000 can be more than enough to live on in certain locations. These eight countries offer very different lifestyle options, but they all share a common denominator in terms of cost. That's encouraging for retirees and near-retirees who may be concerned about falling short in their later years.

AL RAIS ART EXHIBITION MAY 02 - MAY 28, 2016 ETIHAD MODERN ART GALLERY , ABU DHABI The exhibition is the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi features the Emirati Artist AbdulQader Al Rais along with visual artist Musab Abdul Qader Al Rais and Sumaya Al Rais. AbdulQader Al Rais The UAE’s most important and highly celebrated artist, AbdulQader Al Rais was born in 1951. He left Dubai at the age of 6 to study in Kuwait, a country that would come shape his initial artistic and intellectual development. Returning to Dubai in 1974 to take up a position at the Ministry of Labor, the prospective artist earned a degree in Sharia Law at the United Arab Emirates University, Al Ain. Largely self-taught, his artistic interest in local architectural styles and the natural world gave shape to an acute eye for romantic realism. His early work explored the Emirati landscape: its coastlines and idyllic scenery. Despite his works’ essential realism, AbdulQader distilled the fluid elements of the terrain into an exploratory mysticism which resonates with power and vitality. Not only did the artist train himself to capture a sense of place, but also a sense of time, all through the challenging and expressive medium of watercolor painting. His paintings are in many museums such as British Museum, Louver Paris Museum, Art Museum Sharjah, Amman Modern Art Museum Jordan, Qatar Museum, Shanghai museum, India Art Museum New Delhi, Kuwait Art Museum and North West Spokane Museum in the United States. For his achievements he has received many awards. He was awarded his first major accolade as a young artist for an artwork inspired by the movie The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965, dir. Carol Reed), signaling the beginning of his extraordinary life in art. The exhibition is presented by the Etihad Modern Art Gallery.
