Lifetime Achievement Award

A standout example of our work is this freestanding greenhouse in our Messenger system. Measuring 12.8m x 4.2m the structure has three different zones. At its heart, a central seating area with a sofa provides a tranquil space to pause and take in the wider walled garden design by Pip Morrison, while the two adjoining growing zones, each with discrete under-bench tubular heating, allow for carefully controlled environments tailored to different planting needs.

Although the project began as a blank canvas, the completed design feels as though it has stood for generations, blending seamlessly with its surroundings and enriching the character of the garden.

The Messenger glazing system makes it particularly well-suited to sensitive heritage settings, where the timeless appeal of a natural wood aesthetic is essential.

Palmstead Nurseries: Over 50 Years of Sustainable Growing Excellence.

Founded in 1968, Palmstead Nurseries have been a key supplier in the horticultural industry for more than five decades. From their sole nursery in Wye, near Ashford in Kent, they have evolved into a respected and innovative business, supplying high-quality plants to landscape architects, designers, contractors and public sector organisations across the UK.

Palmstead’s core strength lies in a commitment to in-house propagation and young plant development. They take great pride in producing the majority of the plants they sell, affording them the ability to maintain tight control over provenance, quality, and biosecurity. The experienced and passionate team closely monitor every stage of growth, ensuring that each plant leaving the nursery meets the highest standards.

Recognised by the HTA as the winner of their inaugural ‘Best Inspirational Business’ award, Palmstead have long been champions of sustainable horticulture. The 53-hectare site is a hub of innovation, featuring advanced rainwater harvesting and storage systems, along with automated irrigation and climate control systems. With the completion of a third reservoir, they are fully self-sufficient for irrigation—an achievement that reflects a long-standing commitment to resource conservation.

Sustainability is deeply rooted in every aspect of Palmstead’s operations. Their home-grown plants are mostly potted in peat-free compost, using recyclable grey pots on an automated potting machine utilising energy drawn from a substantial solar array. These steps form part of a broader aim to minimise environmental impact.

To ensure their efforts are measurable and continuously improving, Palmstead has joined with environmental consultancy Planet Mark. By establishing a verified baseline of their carbon footprint, the nursery are continually working towards important annual reductions, guided by scientific data rather than assumption.

Palmstead Nurseries are not only growing plants—they are growing a greener, more sustainable future for UK horticulture.

Brickworks Vande Moortel was established in 1864 in the Scheldt Valley in Oudenaarde. Today it is more active than ever at the same location. Guided by the Vande Moortel family, the company has grown to become an important manufacturer at the top line of facing bricks and is the Belgian market leader in clay pavers. Throughout its long history, Brickworks Vande Moortel has always integrated the latest technologies. It was one of the first manufacturers to launch ecological formats at 7 cm on a large scale, and was the first European manufacturer to produce Class A and A+ clay pavers. By acting proactively as a manufacturer, Vande Moortel still meets the needs of the current market.

In addition to quality, Vande Moortel has also heavily invested in capacity. The brick plant currently produces 95,000,000 bricks annually. In addition to Belgium, part of the production is also destined for its neighbouring countries, the Scandinavian countries, Eastern Europe and other export markets such as Japan, America and the Arabian Peninsula. The bricks produced in Oudenaarde meet the highest quality standards. The bricks typically score above Belgian standards, which are among the strictest in the world. For instance, the clay pavers have an extremely low level of water absorption and the facing bricks have a very high compressive strength.

Design for the Environment

Beth Chatto was a pioneering plantswoman and garden designer whose work transformed modern horticulture through her sustainable and ecological approach to planting. Her guiding principle, “right plant, right place,” championed the idea that plants should be chosen according to the conditions in which they naturally thrive, rather than forcing them to grow in unsuitable environments. This philosophy led to gardens that were not only beautiful but resilient, water-e cient, and biodiverse, long before sustainability became a mainstream concern. Beth’s success was deeply rooted in the research of her husband, Andrew Chatto, an amateur botanist who meticulously studied where and how plants grew in the wild. His notes on natural habitats, from dry Mediterranean slopes to damp woodlands, provided the foundation for Beth’s experimental planting at their garden in Elmstead Market, Essex.

Today, the Beth Chatto Education Trust continues to advance this powerful ecological philosophy. Building on decades of research and practical experience, the Trust inspires gardeners, landscape professionals and communities to adopt planting practices that respect local ecosystems. Through education, outreach, and demonstration projects, the Trust shows how selecting plants adapted to local soils can enrich biodiversity and create sustainable landscapes.

This commitment to ecological planting extends into the built environment through innovative projects such as the Chattowood housing development, Beth Chatto’s Meanwhile Garden, and the Albert Roundabout. Each project exempli es how thoughtful plant selection and design can transform urban and residential spaces into thriving, rich habitats. In doing so, the Trust ensures that Beth Chatto’s legacy continues to inspire future generations.
