Stunning fashion, extraordinary people, sumptuous parties for a cause, and cool gifts and accessories all reflect the pop cultural provenance of this mighty state. When author and native Texan Geoff Connor and I recently had lunch at The Headliner’s Club overlooking an ever-changing Austin skyline, he regaled me with the story of how NASA, Sakowitz (the long-ago luxe Houston department store) and French fashion designer André Courrèges created an extraordinary alliance of otherworldly style that still resonates today. It’s the stuff legends are made of and we are proud to share the story in this issue with some terrific vintage images. When it comes to legendary style, that book is being re-written every moment and no more gorgeously than Texas-based designer Nicholas Phat Nguyen’s line, Mysterious By NPN, in Houston and Roger Canamar in San Antonio, both of whom we teamed with along with photographer Mark Oberlin and stylist Dion “Bleu” Drake to create what we think is some of the prettiest fashion to be worn in years. Robert Koch Woolf of Temple, Texas, was a prolific master of midcentury design that took Hollywood’s Golden Age by storm. Here’s a look at his career by our dedicated design follower Lance Avery Morgan. TEXAS IS KNOWN FOR HIGH STYLE, AND ROBERT KOCH Woolf enjoyed a pinnacle of success like very few others of his time. Born in 1923, the American interior decorator was renowned for the Hollywood homes he created with architect and partner John Elgin Woolf. After serving in the military during WWII, Woolf landed in the Los Angeles area where he worked at a local decorating store. He met John Elgin Woolf in 1948 and together they created homes in a distinctive style featuring Mansard roofs, Doric columns, oval windows and The Pendleto n home, Los Angeles. Photo by Slim Aarons

shutter-framed French doors. Inside, the highly designed spaces were glamorous and frequently played on illusion with circular hallways and mirrored pool pavilions. Many have them have appeared in Slim Aarons’ legendary lifestyle photographs of that live on today. The duo established a new vocabulary for glamorous movie-star living. Among their signature creations were dramatic staircases, all-white interiors, and low-slung furniture, all bathed in light. Their creative synthesis of 19th-century French, Greek Revival and Modernist touches took on its own heady identity that has since been referred to as Hollywood Regency, which foreshadowed aspects of postmodernism that we know in design today. The Woolfs’ clients included many of the leading entertainment personalities of the day including director George Cukor, Katherine Hepburn, Ira Gershwin, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Cary Grant, Loretta Young and a laundry list of additional celluloid luminaries who lit the screen with their personalities. Robert Koch Woolf helped them light up their personal lives with clever one-of-a-kind designs until his death in 2004. They were homes that people got dressed up to visit, and we’re hoping this prominent Texan’s style legacy inspires more generations ahead.

Dear Ms. Modern Manners, I think texting is overrated. I recently met someone who could be a romantic interest, but I don’t want to have a texting friendship. I prefer to have a face-to-face conversation. How should I proceed since I don’t want to alienate this potential suitor? Looking For Love Dear Love Bird, Shutting down potential suitors before getting to know them will only set the tone for future relationships. If you don’t like to text or have a difficult time texting because of a career or other activity, let them know early on and be clear about it. This way, you’re setting your standards without turning down an opportunity to get to know them further. If the other person isn’t willing to compromise, then it is best to move on to avoid disagreements. Dear Ms. Modern Manners, Is there a protocol on pregnancy etiquette? I’m just now showing and it seems people are compelled to touch my tummy. How do I avoid this without seeming rude? Proud & Pregnant Dear Mother-To-Be, When in the presence of others, gently clasp your hands over your stomach as a barrier to gently stop their touch, or step back from their reach. Politely tell them that you understand their excitement, but would prefer that they refrain from touching your stomach. If they ask, thank them for asking beforehand and tell them that you rather they not touch. Dear Ms. Modern Manners, What’s the policy on social media posting of a private event? Should the host be asked or shall I ask for forgiveness after the fabulous photos have gone live? Social Media Lover Dear Avid Media User, Just as Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian’s wedding was respected as a private event, so should other private events be honored. However, not everyone can get their hands on phone-free tech like Yondr. Be aware that not everyone will be invited, so it’s best to use your discretion to avoid hurt feelings. At an invitation-only event, avoid stealing the limelight from bride and groom. Unless you have their permission, simply don’t post. As Emily

For dinner parties would it be appropriate to pass a bowl around for everyone to drop their cell phones so that we’re an electronic-free table? I think we could enjoy conversation more without being tethered to communication devices? It sure seems like the 10,000 generations before us were okay without them at a party. Unplugged Party Planner Dear Hopeful Hostess, Have you exhausted all other options including: 1) Allowing a brief interval before dinner for texting and Instagramming photos? 2) Allowing periodic communal checking of messages? 3) Pushing back with a sense of humor? For example, texting a photo of them staring at their phone? 4) Inquiring about their urgency? Maybe they have a need. 5) As a last resort, collect the phones in a bowl. While cell phones can be a huge distraction, your guests may feel a bit pressured if a bowl is passed around for collection. Although the main goal is to have an electronic-free dinner to encourage conversations, guests may be offended. Instead, place the bowl on an entrance table so guests don’t feel obligated and can place their phones by choice. Additionally, include an “Electronic-Free” invitation theme so guests have advance notice. Dear Ms. Modern Manners, If my child is asked to a play date, as a parent am I responsible to help clean up the toys when it’s over, or do I leave that to the hostess to organize? Toy Story Dear Parental Storyteller, Cleaning up toys and the mess—it’s not only the least favorite part of the play date, but also the most important. If the children are old enough to go on a play date, they’re old enough to clean up the toys. Kiddos are notorious for promising to clean up after everything from puppies to themselves. Don’t believe it for a minute. Encourage youngsters and their guests to straighten up and organize one activity before forging ahead to the next - and vice versa remind them to do the same thing when invited on a play date. Then enforce this rule.

PLAYING CUPID Is guiding the love lives of reality show celebrities in front of millions of American viewers really all the fun and games it appears to be? It seems that way to us. On ABC’s hit series The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise and most recently, The Bachelor Winter Games, Texan Chris Harrison broadcasts into America’s living rooms to officiate how one woman or man selects their perfect mate from a selection of 25 eligible singles. As the series wraps its 22nd season, he divulges a behind the scenes look at the show – and what it’s like to be a Texan who has made it big in Hollywood. The Bachelor, The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise have taken America by storm – why do you think the series has become so popular? It’s been on for almost a generation now.
Is the “rose ceremony,” which signifies the choices the star makes for the next round of dating choices, all it appears to be? It looks really stressful on this side of the television screen.
We really seem to have struck a chord with the country. It gives our viewers at home a safe place to judge from their own couch in a safe environment. Also, the show really resonates with women – and men, too – because we all want a fairytale relationship in life. Unlike the other reality dating shows that have formats like ours, the twists are there to help. The shows give the participants the best chance for succeeding at a relationship.
The first rose ceremony is interesting – when contestants enter the ceremony in a group setting and many are elimited simultanously. From the second round forward it gets really serious as individuals are singled out and don’t make it to the next level. It becomes more intense and people feel the rejection on a much more personal level – and the viewers see that, too. You bring your nice guy sensibility to the series – what is it about being raised a Texan that has helped in your success, since it’s obviously worked for you?
The show is filmed over the course of ten to twelve weeks, the same pace as the show’s air time. Tell us about that accelerated pace of events. In the show, everything that happens is happening in reality while the contestants are living in the house during that same amount of time. There is a painstaking attention and amount of work done by the producers and creators of the show. Many other reality dating shows shoot their entire run in just a couple of weeks, but ours is pretty much real time. What about the camaraderie between the bachelorettes and bachelors – do they really get along or is there some rivalry? It seems like things get really heated on the shows. The unique aspect of the show is that genuine friendships are formed onscreen and off. It’s almost like a fraternity, especially after each season ends. Because the house in which the people on the show live has no television, no phones, and no outside news, the friendships are intense. All they have to think about is the actual “act of dating” for the show, so after the show ends, they organize trips that are like mini reunions.

You know, I never really auditioned for the show. They wanted the role to be that of the Bachelor’s best friend. Because of the fact that I am a decent, down home guy, they thought I might be right for it.
Are there some perks of hosting such a popular show? You bet - there are so many benefits. I am a big sports fan, so attending the ESPY awards was a treat. I also love to ski, so attending ski events is fun, too. I’ve also had a chance to meet some of my heroes like Barry Sanders and astronaut Buzz Aldrin. What is your favorite part of being a Texan in Hollywood – how do you “keep it real?” Having most of my family in Dallas makes a difference. So everyone really keeps me grounded. I realize this can all go as quickly as it comes and I’ll enjoy it for as long as I can.

TO DRESS A LADY The First Lady of Texas’ many roles are often a welcome respite from the rigors of state politics. Join our native Texan Lance Avery Morgan as he learns more about the First Ladies and how they wore their responsibilities as they led our state into the future. ONE OF OUR STATE’S GREATEST NATURAL RESOURCES is always our First Lady of Texas, the wife of the governor. Luckily for this state so rich in history, the legacy of current and past grand women who led can be seen at the Texas Woman’s University’s Texas First Ladies Historic Costume Collection in Denton. According to the University, the collection is much more than a chronology of fashion. It reflects the spirit of Texas. Progressing from the 1800s through the industrial 1900s and into this modern century, the First Ladies of Texas were icons of grace and compassion. Each woman leaves her own legacy, but all share common threads that seamlessly stitch together Texas’ First Ladies’ assorted patchwork of experience that has complemented the fabric of life in their eras. The collection is a grand springboard into the living history of Texas women. The University welcomes visitors to enjoy this fascinating

collection of gowns and encourages seeing beyond the heirloom garments and into the chambers of Texas’ past. Accompanying each gown is information about the respective First Lady and the provenance of the gown. Some were handmade and some were store bought, yet each gown reflects the aspirations of the state, many of them from the inaugural balls that were a shining light in the Lone Star social season. The collection currently displays 21 of the 47 collected gowns, of which 46 are owned by the University and one is on loan. The display rotates at various times throughout the year so that all the different gowns may be enjoyed in the collection hall. Each dress has been loaned or donated by various sources to the University. Restoration, storage and upkeep of the collection is made by generous donations from the community including the Texas Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Denton Benefit League.

As winter fades away, the search for perfect entertaining selections continues. According to our resident cuisine expert Josie Rees, these will do perfectly to serve all your guests. STRAWBERRY LEMONADE SPRITZER
Ingredients • • • • • •
1 cup sugar 1 cup water 1 cup lemon juice, fresh squeezed 3 cups water Strawberry puree 7-Up, Sprite, or Ginger Ale
1. Boil one cup water and dissolve one cup sugar to make a simple syrup. Cool. 2. Juice 7 – 9 lemons to yield one cup of lemon juice. Mix the simple syrup and lemon juice in a large pitcher. Add the water to dilute to your desired tartness. 3. Rim the edges of the glasses with sugar. 4. Add one tablespoon of strawberry puree into glasses and pour the lemonade over it. Top off with a splash of soda. I also added some frozen strawberries to keep it cool! 5. Garnish with a lemon wedge and strawberry and add a liquor like vodka and gin, if desired.

Tortilla chips BBQ pulled pork Shredded sharp cheddar and Monterey jack cheeses Canned black beans, drained and rinsed Chopped fresh cilantro Thinly sliced radishes Diced avocado Pico de gallo
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. 1. Layer tortilla chips on a sheet pan. 2. Add desired amounts of pork, cheese and black beans. 3. Heat for 6-8 minutes or until cheese is fully melted. 4. Top with cilantro, radishes, avocado and pico de gallo as desired. 5. Serve immediately and enjoy.

I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT DOWN WITH DAVID Yurman recently at Neiman Marcus in San Antonio. Yes…the David Yurman. I have admired his work for over ten years, so it was special to meet him in person and had some one-on-one time to ask him a few questions about his life, his business partnership with his wife Sybil, and his advice to those who are just at the beginning of exploring creative careers.

Yurman is a sculptor by trade, and his wife Sybil is a painter. They cofounded their iconic, world-renowned jewelry line together, and they are both in the process of preparing to pass their empire down to their son Evan, who began as Design Director for the men’s collection and is currently Creative Director of the company.
2. Lower your expectations. In fact, Yurman suggests discarding them altogether… “Expectations tend to get in your way,” he advises. “Try to be there with your work – talent is God given and you’re just there as the vehicle.”
We were at Neiman Marcus to celebrate the release of the Yurman’s first book, DAVID YURMAN: CABLE. I knew I would learn all about the book in the panel discussion led by Lance Avery Morgan, our Editor-in-chief, so I focused my questions in our interview on other topics. Prior to meeting Mr. Yurman, I scoured the internet to research his life. What I found most intriguing was the recurring theme I kept reading over and over again: the Yurmans have intentionally curated their lives around art, art history, and their ability to create together. Here are

1. Keep a notebook in your back pocket. Find a way to notate the creative inspiration you discover in everyday life. Yurman keeps a small sketchbook in his back pocket, and he pulls it out to draw notes whenever he sees something that sparks an idea or gives him inspiration.
3. There are only MIS-takes, not mistakes. There is no onus on mess-ups when you’re learning your skill. Just do it again until it gets better. 4. Remove judgment. Your place is not to judge your work. Leave the judgment to others. 5. Stop being concerned about what other people think. What anyone else thinks about you is none of your business. Just focus on being authentic.

I guess I have a thing for golf carts.

THE ART OF BEING Being yourself is always good policy. But how do you muster inner strength when you need it most? Our dynamic relationship expert Miranda Walichowski shares insight on how we can be our most authentic selves, even in the midst of challenges.
BEING YOURSELF We are all inspired by stories of incredible strength and courage, of doing what is right, of achieving seemingly insurmountable tasks, of overcome adversity, and of staying the course. Many times we may find ourselves asking “Do I have what it takes?” or “Given the same circumstances, would I be able to do the same?” We may never be called to fight in battle, be imprisoned or martyred for our convictions, risk our lives or wellbeing for another, or complete an arduous athletic endeavour. However, we will all be called to moments where we must delve into our inner strength to do what we ought. We might be faced with an illness, the illness of a loved-one, or the demise of a dream. We may experience failure, or have to deal with difficult people. Sometimes the vicissitudes of life will take us by surprise. And we might find ourselves with little to give in return. It is in those moments that we go to our well; we dig deep and begin to ask of ourselves more than what we feel we can do. Are there ways to fill the reservoir of inner strength? Are there ways to augment our convictions? When we take into account that we are physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual beings, we have at hand a repertoire of methods to increase our inner strength. Let us explore how to nurture our inner strength by addressing our physical and social natures. In the next issue, we will cover the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects of cultivating inner strength. LET’S GET PHYSICAL A strong body makes a difference. Following a disciplined exercise regime allows us to feel a sense of accomplishment. That sense of accomplishment goes far in increasing confidence that will permeate other endeavours. Also, exercise releases endorphins, adrenaline, serotonin and dopamine; these natural chemicals create a well-earned

sense of greater wellbeing. Exercise engages the neurotransmitters in our brain so that we reap the benefits of chemical releases such as endorphins, epinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. These natural chemicals greatly increase our sense of well-being. Getting adequate sleep may seem like a platitude, but research is conclusive in suggesting that adequate sleep allows our bodies to function optimally. Specifically, adequate sleep helps us optimize our ability to have a better mood, cognitive ability, energy, and tolerance for stress. In essence, adequate sleep helps us make better decisions. SOCIAL STRENGTH Recent studies by neuroscientist Matthew D. Lieberman, Director of UCLA’s Social Cognitive Neuroscience Lab suggest that the need to connect socially with others is as essential and basic as the need for food, water, and shelter. In a 75-year longitudinal study, researcher Robert Waldinger, a Harvard Psychiatrist, found that individuals thrive and do well when they are in a supportive community of family and friends. Surround yourself with people who accept, support, and encourage you. Support from your close social network will increase your capacity to draw on your inner strength. Leaning on those connections will be an immense area of strength. You may not even come to appreciate how much of a difference the support makes until you are on the other side of your struggle. Inner strength is a living force. As you walk in the valley of adversity with dignity and a belief that you have all you need to see your struggle through, you become stronger. Addressing your physical and social needs during a trying time will give you the momentum you need to continue moving forward.

The New York City Botanical Gardens recently hosted its 19th annual Winter Wonderland gala. Drawing hundreds of the social elite from around the world, including Texas, the evening brought the beauty and glamor of a New York winter indoors. All of this was captured against a backdrop of a real winter’s snow in New York creating an experience those on hand will not soon forget.

THE VIBE:
The evening began with a cocktail hour under the dome of the Palms of the World Gallery where VIPs rubbed elbows and the chatter flowed as freely as the falling snow outside. The black tie crowd sported an expressive mix of fashion that made all feel welcome. The women were clad in a range of gala-glam ensembles ranging from festive jumpers to exquisite couture gowns. The men mixed it up with a blend of traditional tuxedos with more creative formal options including quite a few sporting velvet jackets that perfectly complimented the cold winter night outside. The evening continued inside a lush and luxe winter white tent for a delicious multi-course dinner. After the meal, the tent turned into a dance club as jetsetters cut moves on the dance floor and danced the night away.

South Coast Plaza recently hosted an exclusive evening of Art, Excellence + Friendship in Orange County for 160 guests, including Helen Mirren, Ralph Fiennes, Frank Gehry, Plácido Domingo, and Houston’s own Lynn Wyatt. Honored guests joined philanthropists, dignitaries, artists, cultural leaders and business executives at an extraordinary concert by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra under maestro Valery Grgiev, followed by an intimate gala dinner. Celebrated South Coast Plaza’s 50th Anniversary, the evening also honored the Segerstrom family’s extraordinary support for the arts.
THE VIBE:
The concert featured performances of Richard Strauss’s Don Juan and Ein Heldenleben and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 3. An encore performance of the final movement of Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky accompanied a montage in 3D, paying tribute to Henry Segerstrom’s artistic vision and South Coast Plaza’s unique beauty. At a private dinner following the concert, 8,000 cascading white phalaenopsis orchids decorated in the room. Six trumpeters heralded the beginning of dinner as guests arrived in the extraordinary venue. Wyatt greeted Maestro Gergiev and remarked, “The concert was thrilling. It was worth every mile I flew to get here. I would have walked every mile to hear that.”

Ralph Fiennes, too, spoke to the assembled diners. “It was just that beautiful,” he proclaimed. “Perhaps of all arts, music is the one that can sidestep language. It’s the great unifier.” Fiennes praised the Segerstroms’ commitment to Art, Excellence, and Friendship, which were in fact the thematic honorees of the evening’s celebration. The musical entertainment continued during dinner as pianist Denis Matsuev performed an improvisation on Duke Ellington’s Take the A Train, followed by Pacific Chorale’s renditions of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and Let the River Run, a composition by Carly Simon.

The energy of the creative blacktie crowd began the evening with an outdoor VIP cocktail reception on held on the venue’s terrace where partygoers and event honorees mingled and buzzed with anticipation of the evening ahead. After the cocktail hour, guests moved inside to the grand ballroom for dinner and the evenings program. The program featured testimonials from the LGBTQ community along with words from Austin Mayor Steve Adler and Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin. The program was capped off with a performance by musician Milck, who brought down the house with her beautiful rendition of the song Quiet. The evenings festivities were capped off with an after party where guests danced the night away, grateful to be a part of an evening they will not soon forget.
THE CAUSE:
The event, chaired by Erin Gurak and Trey Pike, raised funds for the Human Rights Campaign, an nationwide organization of over three million members and supporters which seeks to end discrimination of LGBTQ people so they can be embraced as equal members of society at home, work and in every community.

Resplendent in gorgeous white gowns, the debs dazzled as they were presented by their fathers then led to their bows by their escorts. Following the presentation, the celebration continued as guests and debs alike danced late into the night to the various musical stylings of The New Royals. The elegant red and white floral designs, in vibrant Chinoiserie ginger jars and radiant dècor for the evening were created by The Events Company in Houston.

The attendees were treated to cuisine and cocktails by Rosemary’s Catering. Beginning with passed hors d’oeuvres including their signature south Texas chicken bites; shrimp and grits, steak frites; and pork belly tostones on ciabatta crostini, topped with fresh burrata, preserved peaches and micro tarragon. Guests could then choose from offerings from more than ten unique food stations, with offerings including selections like jumbo cocktail shrimp served beneath an ice carving of the German’s familiar crest, sliced to order carving stations offering rack of lamb, tenderloin, and braised short rib options, mac and cheese pasta made with aged English cheddar, parmesan and French Brie, crisp cornmeal fried oysters and spicy popcorn shrimp; fried quail with chicken drummettes and cream gravy and biscuits, as well as walking salads and handmade gorditas. For dessert, guests chose from a tantalizing assortment of petite sweets – éclairs, truffles, mousse parfaits, macaroons, chocolate molten cakes with fresh ice cream and Rosemary’s famous bread pudding layered with whiskey cream and chunks of dark chocolate.

Under a bright night sky of the last full moon before the winter solstice, art-world luminaries and patrons from Houston and around the world gathered at the Menil Collection for Luminous: The Menil Collection’s 30th Anniversary Ball. Only the fourth gala celebration at the museum since its opening in 1987, the event honored the Menil Foundation’s Chair and Life Trustee Louisa Stude Sarofim, raising more than $2.5 million in table and ticket sales to support the Menil Collection on the occasion of this anniversary milestone. Staged in an enormous tent spanning the Menil’s front lawn, the gala’s decor was inspired by Surrealist artist Max Ernst’s small moonlit scene, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year (1955), a gift from the artist to Dominique and John de Menil. The painting is one symbol of the long friendship between Ernst and the de Menils after they were introduced in 1932.

The vibe of the night was to honor Dominique de Menil’s vision of the importance of the arts to human existence, and to thank Louisa Stude Sarofim for her leadership over the past decade. Guests dined on a menu presented by Jackson and Company featuring pecan wood grilled lamb chops with port wine demi-glace and a special Luminous-themed dessert, each with wine pairings. Following dinner, guests were treated to a concert by Grammy Award-winning musician Angélique Kidjo, whose performance included original music as well as her interpretation of hits from the classic Talking Heads album Remain in Light, which are in fact the focus of her rapturously received current tour. To the surprise and delight of the crowd, Talking Heads’ keyboardist and guitarist Jerry Harrison joined Kidjo for several songs. Dancing followed, and museum galleries remained open until midnight for guests to enjoy.

Moderated by Zainab Salbi, author, media commentator and the Founder of Women for Women International, the program included conversations with remarkable women including Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund; U. Renee Hall, Dallas’ first female Chief of Police; Iasia Sweeting, poet and activist; Jen Welter the first female to coach in the NFL; Hannah Song, founder of North Korea’s underground escape network; and Amy McGrath, the first female marine to fly in a fighter combat mission. The evening continued with the presentation of Toyota’s Mother of Invention award grant, which was bestowed upon Maxeme Tuchman, CEO and co-creator of the groundbreaking educational technology company, Caribu. The $50,000 grant will support further innovation of apps such as Caribu, which allows parents to read bedtime stories to their children remotely.

Absolute adventure underneath a retro-inspired tent awaited the patrons who found themselves in the company of a DeLorean time machine and décor that included neon cassette tapes and vinyl-record bedecked chandeliers. Dayglo linens draped each table topped with totally tubular cylindrical centerpieces in bright splashes of color set off by flamingos in a nod to a few of the zoo’s resident favorites. Transported gala guests danced the night away on the fabulous black and white dance floor surrounded by a room electrified by ‘80s tunes and neon hues. Rosemary’s Catering treated guests to the evening’s cuisine, starting with passed hors d’oeuvres including: mini Beef Wellingtons, mac n’ cheese croquettes, and an iced seafood display with poached shrimp cocktail and snow crab claws. The three-course meal that followed included a salad with Brie, macerated strawberries, poached pear, toasted almonds and poppy seed dressing, braised beef short ribs with smoky bacon demi glaze paired with creole blackened shrimp with a citrus butter, a creamy Yukon gold puree, and herb tossed baby vegetable mélange. For dessert guests enjoyed “Doc” brownies – cocoa crispy brownie tarts and a creamy brandy-spiked milkshake in a snifter. Guests danced the night away to hit 80s tunes in rooms washed in neon by JSAV and a live auction brought the house down with spectacular prizes which set the bar high… for the future.

The festivities began as the blacktie crowd ascended the escalator to the mezzanine level of the Austin Convention Center for cocktails and appetizers. The action continued as the Sociables took their seats for a multi-course dinner and the evening’s program, which included personal testimonials from local residents of how Dell Children’s Hospital has impacted the community. The most touching of which featured a child who was airlifted to Dell Children’s Medical Center’s level one trauma center after a severe car accident. The first responders who saved the child’s life were on hand for the evening and received accolades for their dedication and bravery. The live auction followed the program. What resulted was an incredible outpouring of generosity with over $800,000 raised from the auction items and the Fund the Vision campaign, where donors gave a specific dollar amount to fund a particular hospital need. After the live auction, the party continued well into the evening where some engaged in a casino night while others danced the night away to the tunes of the David Young Band.

As always, Rudy Festari, owner of the posh men’s boutique, outfitted the men in the latest fall fashions and the crowd responded with cheers and whistles. Still exuberant after the parade held earlier on behalf of the World Champion Houston Astros, the crowd loved the runway show. KPRC’s Dominique Sachse served as Mistress of Ceremonies, along with auctioneer Andy Cerota who worked the podium as powerhouse men including Ajay Khurana, Duke Ensell, Kiki Dikmen, Chad Pinkerton, Al Lindseth, Nick Merchant, Martijn Von Kookwijk, Dr. Roland Maldonado and Dean Putterman, to name a few, worked the runway. The popular athletes on the catwalk included former Houston Rocket Mario Elie, Houston Texans Whitney Mercilus, Andre Hal and Lamar Miller, and the finale and star of the show, Houston Astros Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell. The show was followed by an over the top live auction that included a trip to Italy and a private Texans dinner hosted by restaurateur Sam Governale at his much anticipated restaurant Emmaline. The crowd then rocked the dance floor to the sounds of popular DJ Senega.

Co-chairs Sippi Khurana and Kendra Smith, along with honorary chair Debbie Festari hit a grand slam with over 600 guests raising over $320,000 in support of a new beneficiary this year, the Houston Area Women’s Center. The organization helps families affected by domestic violence by providing a safe place to stay, counseling and advocacy.

The glamping-chic crowd began the evening began with a cocktail hour sponsored by Sourced Craft Cocktails where guests had the opportunity to sample signature cocktails created specifically for the event. The festivities continued as the connoisseurs of art and food made their way out to the beautifully rustic, communal tables on Laguna Gloria’s grounds for a Camp Paella Dinner provided by McGuire Moorman Hospitality. After savoring the delicious dinner, the fun continued as campers made their way to the camping area where the fun continued into the wee hours of the morning against the backdrop of Lake Austin. The following day featured a breakfast courtesy of Le Politique and coffee from Chameleon Cold Brew. Additionally, there were plenty of activities throughout the morning including sunrise yoga with Castle Hill Fitness and Outdoor Voices as well as boating, hammock lounging and the opportunity for guests to create their own art that served as a perfect keepsake from the a one-of-akind experience.

The San Antonio Country Club recently served as the perfect backdrop for a New York Christmas Ball themed debutante party for honorees Lilly Calvert, Carrie King, Claudia Kiolbassa and Felicia Mannix. The planning began long in advance with a trip to The Big Apple, where the honorees stayed at the Hotel Elysée and experienced the ultimate New York City inspiration. The end result was a transformation of the San Antonio Country Club so thorough that guests truly felt as though they had been transported to New York City for the holidays. Highlights of the trip included visiting each debutante’s favorite bar, club and restaurant locations to research ideas. Items like napkins, matchbooks, coasters and more were collected for the party’s inspiration from venues like the 21 Club, the Oak Bar, the Palm Court, the Monkey Bar, the Rainbow Room, the Ole King Cole Bar, and Dylan’s Candy Bar. These New York landmarks would come to life in the cuisine and specialty cocktails to be served at the party. The honorees’ mothers were their own event producers for the ball and enlisted several individuals and event design companies to help convert the country club venue. Danny Cuellar from Trinity Flowers & Events produced a plethora of amazingly decorated Christmas trees to give guests the feel they were in Central Park. As attendees entered the club, Laurie Ontjes with Illusions Tents, Rentals & Event Design helped create an entry of angels trumpeting towards the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. The debutantes’ mothers borrowed toys from their children, and sourced special details to help Trinity with the decor for the 21 Club, as well as decorative monkeys from Svelte Veldt Home décor store in San Antonio for The Monkey Bar. Specialty polo mallet swizzle drink stirrers represented the Polo Club. To recreate Dylan’s Candy Bar, the planners pooled resources and made several trips to Casa Dulce Dulceria.

THE VIBE:
As partygoers climbed the stairs to the upstairs party with the Big Band sounds, they marveled at special portraits of each girl created by artist Rex Hausmann, inspired by his Audrey series. The Palm Court-inspired trees, designed by Cuellar, used the existing pillars and completed the effect with palms and lighting. Illusions provided tables, linens, decorative bar fronts, and helped with the creation of Wollman “Dance” Rink by converting the dance floor into a blue ice rink with a special laminate, as well as the ice sculpture of the Statue of Liberty. In the Rainbow Room, Bill Haynie at JSAV Lighting provided Times Square video mapping. The Ole King Cole Bar and its famous mural were also important iconic symbols of New York that were represented at the party. The New York food carts were a fun addition, complete with signs and umbrellas on the side of each cart. The families loved that the San Antonio Country Club not only served as the perfect backdrop for the beautiful ball, but also that the staff led by Wesley Dowdy and Marvin Jones, helped to create a timeless menu that complimented the themes in every rooms. Specialty drinks included the Moscow Mule from the 21 Club, the Go Bananas from the Monkey Bar, and many memorable favorites. From the beginning of the event until the morning hours, the live band kept the pulse and energy of the party at an all time high. Starting off the dancing with Alicia Keys’ hit song, New York, and continuing with the Lucky Strikes playing Frank Sinatra tunes in the Rainbow Room, every detail was perfectly tuned to the magic of the evening. Simply Irresistible from Atlane then took over, playing Until 1:30, with every detail perfectly tuned to the magic event.

Tres Carolinas brought together family and friends to fête German Club debs Caroline Cochran, Caroline Miller and Caroline Satel. Blending the fabulous Mexican flair of San Miguel de Allende with San Antonio’s beloved cultural heritage, the stage was set for a fiesta fit for the three Carolines.

The Décor, beautifully designed and executed by Katherine Lopez of Sweet August Events, upon arrival, mariachi music filled the air as guests greeted the honorees and their gracious parents in a traditional receiving line before making their way to the triangular bar, each side set for one individual Carolina. Featured over the bar were three Frida Kahlo-esque portraits of each debutante by Morgan Goodwin. A trio of specialty drinks from which guests could choose was served throughout the night. Live entertainment by San Antonio-based band Intensity and tunes by DJ 5150 Productions kept revelers dancing late into the night.

The décor for the evening brought guests together on equipale chairs surrounded by beautiful Mexico-inspired florals, authentic Otomi runners and plants indigenous to the region surrounding San Miguel de Allende. As guests enjoyed various culinary creations provided by The Argyle, they were treated to a parade featuring the debs holding Mojigangas. A long-standing Mexican tradition in San Miguel during weddings, birthdays, anniversaries or any other worthy celebration, the life-size papiermâché puppets were created in their own likenesses as an interactive celebration of these beautiful Tres Carolinas. Every detail of the creative and fabulous fiesta contributed to a memorable evening the guests would not soon forget.

Deep in the heart of winter, a debutante party of winter-white wonder brought guests together to warm themselves with friendship and festivities in celebration of three German Club debs. Preceded by hand-delivered scrolled invitations, guests arrived in anticipation of an evening like no other. Crystal curtains, holiday trees covered in white lights and birch trees bedecked in the same hue signaled that guests were in for a true treat. As each of the 900 partygoers made their way down the votivelined hallway, they were greeted with the first of many surprises in store for them. Singer and pianist Bernie Martini entertained and had guests circled around him like a warm winter bonfire. As partygoers ascended the grand staircase, they were met by life-size photographs of the debs. Each portrait taken by Gary Stanko of Billo Smith Photography was beautifully framed by one of the three grandscale windows in the club’s circular stairwell. Once the guests set foot in the ballroom, the night to remember was fully underway.

The deep-winter wonderland sprang to life through the magic of Danny Cuellar of Trinity Flowers and Illusions who, along with San Antonio Country Club’s Director of Catering Wesley Dowdy, created an event enjoyed by all. The music of Dallasbased Professor D kept the lively energy going and had guests on their feet late into the night. The sumptuous menu for the night included various seafood selections served in carved ice bowls and mini martini glasses, catered by the club. Guests gathered on groupings of white leather lounge furniture fronted by lighted cube tables as they enjoyed additional culinary selections provided by the club. Nearby, famed photographic crowd pleaser MirMir captured partygoers in various poses throughout the night. Each glamorous detail of the winter wonderland contributed to a truly memorable celebration.

IRST THERE WAS SCIENCE Rome was not built in a day, and neither did Houston become a global city overnight. But from its founding in 1837, Houston experienced a remarkably quick rise during its first century to become a major international trading port and a world center for oil and gas. During World War II, the M.D. Anderson Foundation attracted the state’s first cancer hospital, which quickly grew into the Texas Medical Center and soon became the world’s largest medical center. But by 1960, Houston had the wealth, political power, and reputation for entrepreneurship and advanced technology to be selected as the site of NASA’s Manned Space Center. It was perhaps this latter accomplishment that most clearly affirmed Houston’s rank in the nation and the world. Several thousand NASA employees transferred to Houston, and the federal government spent billions to build the Space Center that would coordinate man’s first landing on the Moon. Houstonians began speaking in the vernacular of space – terms such as Vanguards and Pioneers, and Projects Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. In fact, Houstonians and their companies rolled out the red carpet for the heavy inflow of federal workers by offering special deals on real estate, cars and utilities, as well as gifts including home furnishings and Stetson hats to complete their look in their newly adopted state. The whole world frequently heard of Houston in press releases issued from the Space Center. Astronauts were heard to make comments from space like “that’s Galveston Bay right there” and “we’re looking right down on Houston – I’ll get a picture.” The astronauts were especially
made to feel right at home and were often fêted at civic and political events, attended parties and galas and were welcomed by Ima Hogg to her prominent suite at the Houston Symphony. Houstonians vied for opportunities to host astronauts and NASA officials in their homes. “We knew them all,” said Houston-bred socialite and philanthropist Lynn Wyatt, “and we loved to entertain them and make them love Houston as we did.” The influence of the Space Center, along with the international connections of Wyatt and her brother Robert Sakowitz would soon elevate Houston in a very new and unique way. The new image of Space City permeated Houston’s society and culture and tapped into a national and international fascination with outer space, and the emerging culture and tastes that reflected that new obsession. Fashions of the 1960s became more minimalist and sleek, and even incorporated modern materials like plastic, vinyl and metals. FASHION FOWARD André Courrèges, the French fashion designer who first joined Balenciaga in 1951 before launching his own line a decade later, was making waves in the fashion world that were bound to seem otherworldly. His modern designs and new fabrics evolved into his “Space Age” collection with shorter skirts, high boots, sleek fabrics and “a palette of astronaut-friendly white and silver.” Buoyed by international acclaim, Courrèges debuted the mini-skirt, a minimalist skirt set four inches above the knee, at the 1965 spring fashion show in Paris.
In the audience to see the new miniskirt and the entire Courrèges collection was Lynn Sakowitz Wyatt of Houston who later met the designer at a dinner party hosted by mutual friends. She was dazzled by his spectacular designs and his completely new take on women’s fashion. She suggested he should bring his mini-skirts and futuristic clothes to Houston because “it was the Space City and the best ‘launch site’ for such innovative new designs.” Wyatt then called her brother back in Houston, Robert Sakowitz, the buyer for Sakowitz department stores, the most upscale retailer in the city. Lynn had grown up the daughter and granddaughter of Houston’s luxury retailers, Tobias and Bernard Sakowitz, and she obviously knew a good opportunity when she saw it. Robert flew to Paris and, in his proficient French, made his pitch to Courrèges. Courrèges was very intrigued with the opportunity to launch in Space City, to tie his collection to the NASA Space Center and to do so through a retailing family already known to him. Despite Courrèges’ willingness, it was quite a stretch for a major European designer to think, in the 1960s, in terms of launching anywhere in the U.S. but New York. The Big Apple was the center of the American fashion market and the location of major stores and buyers. However, Robert Sakowitz offered something never done before: he told Courrèges that instead of paying him only for his original couture, which would be copied by someone else, Courrèges would be paid for the design and then would also be able to produce it in his own production shop to the sizing specifications of Sakowitz stores. Courrèges seized on this new concept, thereby starting a now common trend among other designers to produce their own fashion designs and market them, not simply sell the original. Sakowitz took out half-page ads in the New York Times, both in New York and in its Palm Beach editions, in addition to heavy advertising in Houston about the new fashions coming to Space City for the 1966 spring season.
STYLE FOR MILES The business coup by Sakowitz of Houston, and the impact of the advertising campaign, aroused the resentment of other retailing competitors. New York’s Bonwit Teller sent a representative to Paris offering to buy three times as much product as Sakowitz if they could have the exclusive. Robert Sakowitz returned to Paris to urge Courrèges to keep their deal. In the end, Courrèges agreed to give Sakowitz a two-week head start on Bonwit Teller, which was all the Texas retailer needed. The New York Times sent a reporter to Houston to cover the fashion debut at Sakowitz and history was made and recorded: ready to wear fashion directly from a top European designer’s own production shop to a Houston retailer. Sakowitz very successfully marketed the new Space Age clothing lines to the residents of Space City playing into the city’s attitude of modernity and playing on such popular cultural themes as the TV hit show Star Trek, which debuted in September 1966. Robert Sakowitz would later repeat this successful formula with Rive Gauche by Yves Saint Laurent, which also made its U.S. debut at Sakowitz. Houston still feels like the perfect Space City to contemporary eyes although its position as a global city was established many decades ago. It is a remarkable historical drama to review how Houston engineered its port and ship canal into the largest international shipping center, used Spindletop and the Texas Oil Boom to grow itself into the Energy Capital of the World, built the world’s largest and most advanced medical center and then built the Space Center which put men on the moon. Through it all, Houston has been the platform for a prodigious list of international political, business and social leaders. But certainly, the story of how Lynn Wyatt and Robert Sakowitz merged the worlds of space technology and international fashion to the benefit of Houston is one of the great insider stories of one of the world’s great cities.

ORD OF THE MANOR To nurture your inner Brit, you must see the English countryside and live like the lord of the manor for at least a few days this season. Chewton Glen is a prime example of five-star English resort, offering warm, attentive service coupled with Old World style. One of the first grand estates to become a hotel back in the 1970s, the house is located on the edge of the ancient New Forest, one and one-half hours from London via chauffeured car. Today, it’s considered one of England’s poshest resorts, with the classic feeling of an Agatha Christie mystery novel – chintz couches, roaring fires and all. The grounds encompass 130 acres of exquisitely landscaped parks, gardens and woodland, all just a short walk from the sea.
Completed in 1732, the estate came into prominence in the mid-19th century when the novel The Children of the New Forest was written at the estate. This literary link has contributed to the house’s fabled allure. Captain Frederick Marryat, the book’s author, must have found the area inspiring… and intriguing. Since the locale was within easy reach of the sea, smugglers brought their contraband up through the grounds and into the forest beyond it. Marryat’s brother, George, owned the property from 1837 until 1855, when it was sold to the Elphinstone family. Add to this the fact that Lewis Carroll wrote Alice in Wonderland nearby, and you have the makings of literary lore. When I asked the hotel’s staff if they thought the property has otherworldly spirits lurking about, they replied, “The hotel is not haunted to the best of my knowledge, but the memory of Captain Marryat still remains in all the themed rooms,” according to managing director Andrew Stembridge. The estate began its transformation into a luxury hotel in the late 1960s, yet it still retains every bit of its original charm and nobility.
Voted “Best Small Hotel Under 100 Rooms” by the Gallivanter’s Guide Grand Awards of Excellence, each of Chewton’s 58 bedrooms and suites has been restored to the splendor of the late 19th century. Many of the suites and rooms are named after characters in The Children of the New Forest. Mine, The Beacon Suite, named for the cleric character in the novel, is exactly what you’d expect in a country estate resort, complete with a Wedgwood blue and navy color scheme, the essential architectural sketches and bird species prints, and a balcony overlooking the croquet lawn. RESTORE, THEN RELAX Want to do more than take in the breathtaking English scenery? Head for the resort’s luxurious spa. Chewton Glen sets a new benchmark in hotel spa facilities thanks to an $8 million refurbishment that was completed in early 2005. A team of qualified therapists and fitness instructors provides a selection of over 50 treatments. The centerpiece is a 50-foot-long, ozone-treated indoor pool. There’s also a hydrotherapy pool, considered to be the crowning glory of the new spa. Three new treatment rooms and a relaxation room have been added, with separate saunas and steam rooms in the ladies and gentlemen’s changing areas. After a swim, you’ll want to take at least one of the treatments at the spa. Mine, a grape-seed extract scrub, sea-kelp body wrap and extensive sports massage was the perfect cure for common jet lag. Afterwards, I stretched out in the relaxation room, a serene hideaway complete with terrycloth chaise lounges and private headsets. After the treatment, you’re sure to be hungry. A casual daytime option is the Pool Bar, with a buffet lunch and breakfast served most of the day.

At night, get ready for a spectacular meal. The English so often receive a bad rap for their cuisine, but these days most fine dining meals are as good as a four-star offering anywhere in the world. And Chewton certainly provides world-class meals. But before dinner, cocktails anyone? Any of the common area rooms with their chintz couches, casual wing chairs and tasseled grace will do, because everywhere you look, there is someone impeccably qualified to serve you. “Everything is prepared in our Michelin-starred kitchen, where executive chef, Luke Matthews and his 30-strong kitchen brigade oversee the operation to ensure that the same high standards of cooking excellence applies to everything that is served to guests, from a gourmet dining experience to an in-room club sandwich,” noted Stembridge. Whether served in the formal dining room, terraced solarium, or al fresco areas, the Marryat restaurant offers a variety of dishes from a selection of menus. The style of its cuisine is eclectic, with an extensive use of fresh, local produce, such as wild mushrooms, vegetables and game from the New Forest, as well as seafood from Christchurch and Lymington. Want the perfect wine to accompany the perfect meal? Choose a bottle from over 500 wines in the extensive cellar. Recently voted one of the 25 best restaurants in the United Kingdom by famed restaurant guide Egon Ronay, it’s worthy to note that the Marryat has held its Michelin-starred status for decades. In fact, with the addition of the Kitchen School and six luxe treehouse suites on the property, you could spend a month here and still not be bored with the surroundings or amenities. Guests can enjoy a range of spa treatments in the treehouse lodges. Hampers with local produce can be delivered from the kitchens, so that guests can also cater for themselves, if they’d like. These suites appeal particularly to those looking for seclusion, as well as small groups and families who want to
enjoy an independent stay, but with all the benefits of a luxury fivestar hotel within easy reach. FORTIFIED FOREST Should you wish to indulge your sporty side, I recommend a quick game of croquet before supper. The grounds also boast a nine-hole, par-three golf course, a practice range, a putting green and two indoor and two outdoor tennis courts. An outdoor pool overlooks the manor, surrounded by clinging vines of bougainvillea. Because Chewton is so enticing, offering a taste of what it’s like to be a country gentleman, you may not want to leave the grounds. You must, however, and make the short drive to the New Forest. The forest is indeed something out of a fairytale. Over 2,000 horses run wild, adding a mythical element. A quick walk down a path and you’ll find the ocean. Another fun excursion is the seaside villages. Nearby is The Broadlands, a country home about an hour away, which is owned by the very charming Lord and Lady Romsey. The estate is open for private tours a few weeks out of the year during the summer. The home is tastefully appointed by the family, who have had it for centuries and have amassed a substantial collection of nearly priceless 18th-century English paintings. This, as you may know, was where Prince Charles and Lady Diana spent their honeymoon. The manors in this area are grand, noble and each full of its own rich history. So, get thee to a simple country life for a long weekend at Chewton— simple, but elegant, and certainly never dull. Introduce yourself to the other guests, and you are sure to make lifelong friendships, like I have. In a location so inspiring, you might even end up between the pages of the next great English novel.

On a recent evening in the heart of San Antonio’s favorite small-town community, the shops of Uptown Alamo Heights opened their doors for a private event celebrating The Children’s Ballet of San Antonio (CBSA). Adults enjoyed finding the perfect gifts on their lists as children were entertained with games, sweet treats and more. Featuring a spectacular performance under the stars by students of CBSA, the night was a beautiful way to shop and support local small businesses who graciously donated 15% of all sales from the evening festivities to CBSA. True holiday spirit filled the air as guests of the event shopped door-to-door excitedly greeting friends and purchasing the perfect gifts for loved ones. With complimentary valet parking and wine and hors d’ouvres awaiting their arrival, adult attendees were greeted with holiday tunes by DJ Nic Dante who provided the perfect musical backdrop. Activities including photos with Santa, and holiday arts and crafts for little ones, along with hot cocoa and sugary treats from Bird Bakery, offered something for everyone. The most special treat of all, however, was the Nutcracker performance given by students of the organization where the ballerinas became the brightest-shining stars in a flawless performance of the beloved classic.

Lots of high fives and a sold-out crowd for the 5th annual Touchdown for TEACH event made for an energetic evening as almost 500 guests packed into the ballroom at River Oaks Country Club. Special guest Peyton Manning, interviewed by Spencer Tillman, had supporters laughing and applauding as he remarked on his legendary football career as a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, five-time NFL MVP and the first starting quarterback in NFL history to win the Super Bowl playing with two teams. The questions covered a variety of topics from playing experiences to how important mentors are in life, keeping the crowd thoroughly engaged.

The evening was brimming with laughter and applause. The first part of the evening brought a fun take off on one of Peyton’s commercials when he appeared in a bathrobe, as Susan Sarofim and Spencer Tillman donned matching white robes and presented one to Peyton with the TEACH logo. The organization’s co-founders Susan D. Sarofim and Mary Yenik cheered the organization’s huge success, which raised a recordbreaking $1.1 million.

TEACH (To Educate All Children) works to give educators in low-income schools strategies in de-escalation and conflict resolution. The organization will net the entire fundraising amount raised thanks to Fayez Sarofim who underwrote the event. TEACH has changed the lives of thousands of students through the approach of coaching educators, transforming the student experience, and supporting schools to achieve improved results.
