Marilyn Hoffman and National Champion Stallion, Ultimate Bey

“Marilyn’s aggressive approach to the international marketing of the property resulted in a completed transaction in 5 months from start to finish. I’m hasten to add that the prior agencies failed completely to do any effective marketing of Brantley Manor, although I did spend a substantial upfront marketing fee with them.” Eugene L. Brantley, Esquire Seller of a 13,000 sq. ft. South Carolina mansion

10

Marilyn Hoffman’s expertise in selling extraordinary waterfront estates and ranches attracts a clientele that reads like a Who’s Who of business, sports, entertainment and the social register. Golfer Lee Trevino, a Saudi Prince, sports legend Deion Sanders, transportation secretary Milo Bryant, a billionaire Texas oilman, Horatio Alger Member, Carl Westcott, cosmetics queen Mary Kay, Merv Griffin, and a major sports team owner have all been her clients. Marilyn sold a 35,000 sq. ft. waterfront estate for the full price of $20,000,000 in only 24 days. This home is believed to be the largest waterfront estate sold in the country. This estate was previously listed with another international broker and did not sell. Marilyn was also the first Dallas broker to list a $100,000,000 home. She also sold one of the largest estates in Texas to the new owners of the Texas Rangers. Her sale of a $9,995,000 Penthouse in Dallas was the most expensive penthouse ever sold in Dallas. She sold this home to the most famous Texas oilman in only 79 days after it had been listed with other brokers for 807 days. Marilyn sold a $13,500,000 estate to the owners of a Scottish castle after she met them at the Keeneland sales where they were buying Thorughbreds. Marilyn sold one of the most famous Texas ranches, the Double Diamond Ranch in Boerne, with 2,000 acres, 20 homes and an exotic game preserve. Marilyn does the most unique marketing in the world, with real estate exhibits at such prestigious events as the Cavallino Classic Yacht Hop in Palm Beach, the Cattle Barons Galas, the Bal dela Mer in Monte Carlo, the Yacht Extravaganza at Fisher Island, the Military Ball in New York, the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction, the Breeders World Cup, the Rolex Three Day Event, the Winter Equestrian Festival, and at a charity gala at Mar a Lago, Donald Trump’s Palm Beach estate. Marilyn donates champion Arabian horses to many charity auctions, such as the Watermill Gala in Southampton, where her donation sold for $35,000 to a European princess. She has also donated over $200,000 to the Cattle Barons Ball, benefiting the American Cancer Society, and has topped the charity auctions many times. Not too many brokers can claim they have sold the largest home in multiple states, but Marilyn certainly holds the record. Her sale of Summer Wind Farm with a 24,000 sq. ft. home, was the largest home sold in the state of Kentucky. She sold a 20,000 sq. ft. home in Oklahoma for Cowboy Bill Watts, the world champion wrestler. She sold the Fox Ranch in Colorado, home of a 150,000 sq. ft. log home, reported to be the largest private residence in the country. Her most recent sale was an $11,000,000 that she sold to the CEO of one of the most famous Japanese corporations for $10,875,000.

The 35,000 sq. ft. waterfront mansion sold for the full price of $20,000,000 by Marilyn only 24 days.

Bella Riva “La Rotunda” ONE OF THE WORLD’S GREAT ESTATES

MAR • APR 2015

rare opportunity to live in a work of art, this Grand Italian Palazzo on Lake Travis was fashioned after Andrea Palladio’s famous “Villa Rotunda” in Vicenza, Italy. Some of his most influential villas survive in the Veneto region around Venice, Italy. Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) remains the most influential architect in the history of architecture. This romantic palazzo has 9,760 sq. ft. and showcases classic Italian architecture with rich mahogany, imported Italian tile and Carrara marble throughout. Designed and built by one of the country’s foremost entrepreneurs for this own personal estate, with all the elegance and grandeur of a bygone era yet all the modern conveniences for grand scale entertaining and comfortable family living. With a staggering 270-degree Lake Travis panorama resting on a private, 16-acre waterfront, hill-top peninsula overlooking Lake Travis, the first view of this classic Italian architecture palatial estate is captured from an awe-inspiring stone-and-grass drive lined with ivy-covered walls. Looking down from the hillcrest drive, the villa’s bold silhouette stands out magnificently against the calm, blue waters of the lake. Built in 2004 with 8 bedrooms, 9 baths, and 8 living areas by prominent Austin architect, David Shiflet, staying true to Palladio’s original “Villa Rotunda” concept, which was laid out in a symmetrical axis with archways leading to complimentary wings and loggias. At the very heart of the home is a magnificent grand rotunda with a massive domed ceiling that draws the eye up, upward and around. Exquisite Venetian moldings adorn rounded walls. Gorgeous, hand-cast stone fireplaces complement rooms rich with mahogany, and French doors are crowned by arched Palladian windows. A pair of curvaceous stairways, lined with hand-forged, wrought-iron balusters, wind their way up to meet at a second floor landing where the master suite is located. The action is down at the lakeside where a colossal boat dock/party deck, large enough to hold a fleet of water toys and a full-sized yacht, rests on a just a small portion of the 1200 linear feet of waterfront. The lake offers great fishing; sailing and water skiing, and all the popular Lake Travis restaurants and attractions are just a quick, dock-to-dock boat ride away. Other highlights include a game room, a 320 bottlecapacity wine/bar room, a handsome 3-story high mahogany library, an office, a home theater and two detached 2-car garages: one with an over-head apartment and the other with an above dance studio/exercise room with sauna. This is a truly unique opportunity to own a spectacular waterfront home on one of Austin’s premier lakes and still be within minutes of Lake Travis schools and everything that is Austin. Coming home to this amazing Italian villa is like visiting Italy every day. Offered at $9,999,000 lavishly furnished. Www.AustinsFinestEstate.com

EDIT

Suddenly, it’s spring and around here we are reaching for the blue skies in anticipation of the season of stellar eternal equinox festivities that we have been looking forward to all year. In fact we’ve been looking forward to looking backward. To the 1970s which is sprinkled throughout the issue with an homage to today’s fashion reinterpreting The Me Decade, as it was coined. In fact, I took a poll of the top 1970s trends and topics that caused the greatest impact to those asked. Your results may vary (a new dinner party game?), yet here is what I found in a Top Ten Survey (with a nod to the ‘70s phenom Family Feud): 1. The music and style transformation from hippies to mod to glam. From the Beatles breakup to the disco inferno, the range of style was astounding. 2. The invention of the artificial heart. It’s changed how long people live. Literally. 3. The Equal Rights Amendment where the personal became political for millions of women and the men who love them. Remember the hubbub over unisex bathrooms that helped squashed it? You’ve come a long way, baby. 4. The environment as something to save. From the first Earth Day in 1970 to giving a hoot to not pollute, the message is still pervasive. 5. The evolution of names: the most popular baby names in 1970 were Michael, James, Jennifer and Lisa. That gave way to soap opera star-sounding names like Brent, Chase, Ashley and Brittany to the return to more traditional names like Calvin, August, Lily and Sophie. 6. Groundbreaking TV shows like All in the Family led to the current hit Modern Family, still groundbreaking with a dose of compassion. Was Kojak really that different from any of the CSI franchise and was the empowerment of women in The Mary Tyler Moore Show so very different than it is now in Girls? 7.The rollercoaster of gas prices and supply. Some things seemed to have never changed. 8. Technology’s evolution from room-size computers, 8 Track tapes (the click in between the channel change on a long song was unnerving, right?) and the VCR’s origins…to pushing a button to have any content any time still boggles the mind. 9. The mobility of communicating on a phone in the car or anywhere in the world saved hours of creating quirky answering machine messages. 10. My Bicentennial-themed bedroom, complete with Revolutionary soldier decals on the shade and variations of red, white and blue room décor still resonates with my All-American point of view. Just without the Lite Brite, Spirograph, Viewmaster and Matchbox cars on the shelves. You’ll see our 1970s influence through this issue (and on this page) illustrated in our Good Times fashion feature helmed by photographer Romy Suskin and stylist Megan Kyle Bennett, with our interpretation of how Bianca Jagger and Lauren Hutton might approach today’s style scene, as well as our style editor Erin Busbee’s favorite 1970s trends, too. The more things change, the more they stay the same, it seems. we look so forward to sharing all the fun we have in store for you in this and every issue of The Society Diaries as we celebrate the best of the best of the lives you lead. Balanchine Ballet at the Tobin Center An evening of contemporary dance spotlights choreography by the iconic George Balanchine, one of the greatest names in ballet. Featuring Ballet San Antonio’s Artistic Director Gabriel Zertuche, this performance is sure to impress any lover of ballet, both classic and contemporary. March 27-29 Tobincenter.org

Brooks twists historical imagery and scenes from the past into abstract images that employ a sense of familiarity and strangeness, causing the viewer to find herself or himself in an alternative universe. By distorting history in combination with incorporating touches of Orientalism and Modernism, Brooks introduces viewers to a world of her own creation. We love that Alice Carrington Foultz has brought the work of Brooks to the eyes of Texas collectors in their collaboration while the Roosevelt’s Leland Stone supported the event. SIMPLY ELEVATED Texas is shinier than ever these days, thanks to jewelry design talents like Houstonian Katie Scott of KATIE Design, as our style seeker Elizabeth Wilhite discovered

Above left: Open Eagle Wing Earrings - sterling silver in pave diamonds by Katie D. Right: Katie Chokers in 18K gold and rose gold vermeil, sterling silver and ebonization by Katie D Jewelry

What inspired you to create your Spring 2015 line? The spring 2015 collections were inspired by my desire of simplistic edge and the elevation of spirit when ignited by genuine love. I created themes such as an eagle’s wing effortlessly raising you above circumstances and the thorn collection revealing the truth in that love and pain coexist. Where will you go next with your collection? I have my sights set on largely increasing a web-based clientele (Katiebydesign.com). We are currently working on a website renovation that is more friendly, interactive and geared towards the on-line consumer. We will also continue to nurture our relationship with Neiman Marcus and high-end boutiques around the United States. What is the most rewarding aspect of jewelry designing for you? One of the most rewarding aspects of jewelry design is sharing my experience with others, inspiring people to utilize their gifts and realizing a passion into an actual object. I love getting dressed and having an opportunity to literally wear my dream.

Neiman Marcus San Antonio Hosts Jeweler Roberto Coin

$25.00 - $125.00

AvAilAble through the tobin Center box offiCe www.tobinCenter.org

We caught up with Roberto Coin, who recently graced the Neiman Marcus San Antonio’s Precious Jewels Salon where his Texas fan base is legion and vast. The master jeweler’s dynamic personality is keenly aware of his own style and that of his clientele who inspire him daily. “You don’t go to school to learn creativity,” he confides. “It is God-given. I have a love for everything… a love for life, animals, and being curious about the fashion industry. Creativity takes a talent to see how the woman of the future can be graced (with my jewelry).”

or by CAlling

He says that since all women are different, they indeed dress differently. “We have a huge variety of product for every woman.” In fact, they just can’t resist him. When asked about The Roberto Coin Woman, and correlatively, The Roberto Coin Woman in Texas, he muses, “You show me the lady, I’ll see her personality and I can know how to dress her – from clothes to jewelry, and beyond.” He feels that while all women are special, he is drawn to the Jackie-O types of style. “Style is not based on price, it is based on class.” He goes on to say, “When I make special pieces for my Texas clientele, for instance, one woman who has a ranch will differ in taste from another ranch owner. To me, it’s about the individual.”

The University of the Incarnate Word provides reasonable accommodation with adequate notice. To request disability accommodation for this event visit www.uiw.edu/ada.

36

Coin is truly an astute observer of people. He told me he started his career as a hotelier which means that his customer service is tantamount. In fact, in 1977 at the age of 33 Coin founded the company that would bear his name in Vicenza, the City of Gold. Initially, the company was intended for production on behalf of some of the most prestigious brands of international fine jewelry before the Roberto Coin brand was launched in 1996. His brand is available in 63 countries at over 1000 points of sale, and of course, at Neiman Marcus stores everywhere.

Enver Kaba of Ferrari of San Antonio

FEROCiOUslY FERRARI

By Jake Gaines Photography by Greg Harrison The LaFerrari represents Ferrari’s most ambitious project yet to push the boundaries of technology on a road car, drawing together the finest expression of its technical capabilities in both GT and Formula 1 engineering. It boasts the most extreme performance ever achieved by a Ferrari production car and features the most advanced and innovative technical solutions that will, in the future, filter down to the rest of the Ferrari range. This is Ferrari’s first ever production car to be equipped with the F1-derived hybrid solution – the HY-KERS system – which combines an electric motor producing over 150 CV with the most powerful incarnation yet of Ferrari’s classic V12, with 800 CV at 9000 rpm. Talk about zooming into the future with a car like this. We love that Ferrari “invites” only a select few to purchase this car. Only 499 of these cars are made and they cost a cool $1.5 million dollars each. The inside scoop? Recently a luxury automotive enthusiast in the San Antonio area was invited to purchase the car. It arrived in a wooden crate and was displayed at Ferrari of San Antonio until delivered to the purchaser. BEHAVE

GALA TIDINGS Gala, mobile phone, R.S.V.P and travel etiquette remain hot buttons for us all, and our insider Ms. Modern Manners, Sharon Schweitzer, JD, is on the scene with tips to support your next, smart social move Dear Ever Eventful, If this was me I would politely decline his fantastic invitation just like you decline any other invitation when you already have another commitment. Be sure to express your thanks for the invitation; remember that you have no obligation to explain your regrets although you may wish to provide a brief reason since he is your cousin – maybe that you already have dinner plans or tickets to a show. Dear Ms. Modern Manners, One of my regular lunch-date friends is always delightful to spend time with. But lately she’s been absorbed into her telephone, even at our lunch dates. I understand she has a lot of business to attend to, but I think she’s become more dependent on the phone than she realizes. How do I get my friend back? Loving Lunch

Dear Ms. Modern Manners, I’m the co-chair of our children’s center’s annual gala. This year my co-chair happens to be one of my best friends, and although it’s been fun to plan the event together, sometimes it’s hard to distinguish our “personal” and “working” relationships. If the planning work gets stressful, I don’t want it to affect our friendship. How do I keep things in order? Chairing and Cheerful Dear Cheerful Co-chair, This is not uncommon, dear one. Whether it is in business or social circles, committee co-chairs still have two main responsibilities: first, making sure that committee tasks are completed well and on-time and second, that your committee members work well together. As the co-chairs you set the leadership example. Reminding each other of your joint mission; then asking what you could each do better has an amazing impact on personal and working behavior. Dear Ms. Modern Manners, My cousin, who has a marvelous oceanfront property, often invites me to the fantastic events he throws there. Problem is, although it’s always a fabulous time, the parties are quite frequent and I’d like to spend some of that time with my other friends. How do I politely decline an invitation? Eventful Etiquette-Seeker

50

Dear Lunch Lover, Mobile phones - when to use and when to lose? Before taking action, think about what upsets you most – the message that your regular lunch-date would rather be elsewhere or whether you have possibly been guilty in the past? A polite approach may be to warmly ask her with your authentic smile, “Let’s be present with each other today for lunch and unplug from our phones.” Then see what her response is. Remember that we cannot change others, we can only improve ourselves. Since phone use is a no-no in a social setting, she may be out of circulation soon unless she changes her ways. Dear Ms. Modern Manners, I’m super-excited, but also rather nervous, about visiting “mysterious Myanmar” this year, which I understand used to be called Burma, as part of an Orient Express cruise. We will be meeting locals; so should I take gifts for my Yangon hosts and, if so, what would you recommend? Vibrant Voyager Dear Bon Voyager, International etiquette is an important aspect of luxury travel. Sophisticated voyagers will want to know that although the U.K. and the U.S. continue to refer to the country as Burma, the country name was officially changed to Myanmar in 1989. A wonderful way to bridge the cultural divide is to bring and wrap a small quality item from your State Capitol gift shop such as a handcrafted item, a pen or golf ball. Don’t be surprised if your gracious gift is initially declined with “You should not have gone to so much trouble.” Kindly reply that it is your honor to present the gift.

REFRESH

SPRING'S AWAKENING A few simple tips for spring rejuvenation? Look no further, according to our resident wellness expert, Andra Millian, L.Ac., as your eternal equinox gets revved up

So, you’re off to a fresh new year, and hopefully

staying faithful to your resolutions for a healthy mind, body and spirit, right? Winter’s chill has all but passed, and now spring’s jubilant rebirth is upon us. Now is the time to check in on yourself and make sure you’re living to your fullest potential. To make the most of your “spring cleaning,” here are three simple tips to help you foster an active, healthy lifestyle. As the poet Lord Tennyson wrote, spring is the season when fancy turns to love. So remember to love yourself, or as yours truly always says ‘be nice to you’ and remember this advice as you make the most of this rejuvenating season… DRINK & EAT WELL Ditch the BPA since BPA is found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins often used in containers that store food and in plastic water bottles, the inside coating of food cans and bottle tops. Luckily, more and more BPA-free products have come onto the market, so start by replacing your plastic drinking bottles and containers with glass, porcelain or stainless steel. Exposing BPA plastic to heat makes it worse for you, so leaving plastic in a hot car, microwaving BPA plastic containers or washing them in your hot dishwasher for later reuse is a big no-no because the plastic may break down and allow BPA to leach into foods. If you must use plastic, look for products labeled as BPA-free. Tip: Some plastics marked with recycle codes 3 or 7 may be made with BPA. GO PLAY OUTDOORS Exercising at the gym or yoga studio certainly has loads of health benefits but getting outdoors, even for a few minutes a day adds countless benefits to your health and overall wellbeing. Spending as little as 20 minutes a day outside in nature can help increase your quality of sleep. The natural sunlight’s Vitamin D helps set the body’s internal clock that signals us when to eat and sleep, and normalizes hormonal functions that occur at specific times of the day. Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, which is important for helping prevent inflammation, obesity, cancer, hormonal problems, and it supports a strong immune system. According to the American Chemical Society’s journal Environmental Science & Technology, even as little as five minutes exercising in a park, working in a backyard garden, hiking on a nature trail, or even sitting in a plant-filled setting will benefit your mental health. Plus, with the Daylight Savings Time settings change, try turning your clocks ahead

54

that one hour the night before you go to bed rather than the actual day it happens. You’ll be amazed at how much of a difference that can make in re-setting your body’s clock, too. Here are a few fun ways to get outdoors: 1. Go for a morning or evening walk every day. And if you have one, bring your pooch. Living an active lifestyle with a pets can decrease your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels and feelings of loneliness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Don’t have your own dog? There are plenty of shelter dogs who’d love to go with you. Visit Rufftailrunners.org for more information. 2. Even if you have a busy schedule, you can always find time to have lunch or take a break out of doors. Leave your digital device behind for great people watching. 3. If you are in a pensive mood, try the Japanese tradition of Shinrin Yoku – ‘Forest Bathing’. Just sit quietly outdoors. Turn off all of your electronic devices. Practice being totally present and without distraction even for five minutes and notice the sights, sounds, and smells. Repeat often. TUNE IT UP Now that you’re active, out and about in the warm spring air, you may want to check in with your personal physician, and if you don’t have one, find the best healthcare provider you can and develop a good working relationship with them. A good physician provides compassionate attention as well as medical expertise, so having a good rapport with your doctor can give you peace of mind about your overall health and wellness. Try to have a checkup at least twice a year. The same advice applies to your dentist: get a professional deep cleaning for your gums and teeth at least every six months. It will give you a fresh healthy feeling and also, a beaming smile to share with the world. Sometimes stress can sneak into our lives when we least suspect it, manifesting itself as neck and back pain. Now is a good time to visit your favorite D.C. for a chiropractic adjustment. If you are having chronic muscular discomfort, you may also consider seeing an acupuncturist. While conventional medicine is essential for comprehensive health, alternative healthcare solutions such as chiropractic and acupuncture can offer innovative treatments with enormous benefits. Even if you’re not in bad pain, it never hurts to touch base for a physical “tune-up” to make sure you’re functioning at your very best.

EVOLVE

YOUR RENEWABLE ENERGY With winter falling behind and the warm possibilities that lie ahead in the year starting with the spring season, there are ways to make the most of your life, according to Austin-based Resonance Repatterning practitioner Mary Schneider as she shares her expertise on how to create tools for forgiveness and renewal Spring is here and it is an exciting time of new

growth and new beginnings. Traditionally, this time of the year has been the time to clean out the old to make way for the new – spring cleaning is a tried and true activity enabling the letting go of a lot of clutter and outdated ideas. Even new romance is oftentimes referred to as something to look forward to in the spring. So, as the newness moves in, we are given the opportunity to let go of what we do not need that no longer serves us. When we look at letting go, let us examine what this looks like on an emotional level, too. The ultimate way to let go is forgiveness. I have spent a lot of time contemplating this concept of forgiveness and to me what is most important is that everyone, no matter who they are or what they have done, is worthy of forgiveness. Since before the Dark Ages, forgiveness was a foreign, even nonexistent concept in the West. At the time of Christ, the only methodology to obtain balance was eye-for-an-eye justice. Unfortunately, even today we all know what this looks like. One of the greatest contributions to mankind was the introduction of the concept of forgiveness. And, ultimately this led to the very important realization that this idea was also relevant for our relationships with ourselves. We can, and must be able, to forgive ourselves in order to be whole and happy humans. So much is written in current literature about the process of forgiveness and much of it is really helpful. In The Energy of Money, author Maria Nemeth writes, “Forgiveness occurs when you systematically lay aside conclusions you have reached about other people and the motivations for their actions.” In my own experience, I have come to the conclusion that forgiveness is a many-layered process that happens over time. Like grief, forgiveness is a very individual process and takes whatever time it must take. We do not need to berate ourselves about not doing it right or well or within any specific time frame, as if on some kind of schedule. It actually occurs through the power of intention.

56

After many years of arduous and painful forgiveness work on my relationship with my parents, in deep contemplation one day I heard myself, from deep within my heart, praying for my parents to be able to forgive themselves. Before that, I had never known that particular kind of forgiveness and I realized I had reached a whole new level of the concept and a deeper experience of it. The lesson? If we choose not to forgive, we are only hurting ourselves. To be able to access the power of forgiveness, it is helpful for us to work on our own anger and resentment. Unresolved anger and resentment block the ability to forgive. This is where we might want to seek the assistance of some therapeutic work. Unearthing and resolving deep resentment and anger can be a difficult and painful process. Resentment and anger are self-punishment and forgiveness is self-nurturance. The Spanish derivation for ‘resent’ is resentir which literally means to feel again. So, unfortunately, when we choose not to forgive, we choose to feel the original hurt again – and again – and again. Resentment is insidious. It resides deep down inside of us and is hard to find. I always think of anger as fire and resentment as smoke – much easier to hide – and still just as potentially damaging. When we allow ourselves to heal these negative emotions, the process of forgiveness begins to happen automatically of its own accord. In this dynamic process, we wake up to new levels of forgiveness as time progresses and the benefit for us is greater presence, connection and joy in our daily lives. So, to prosper and rejuvenate on a soulful level means to forgive and move forward to create new and much more meaningful experiences that will enhance our lives. What’s not to love about that opportunity?

CREATE

STYLE QUOTIENT Our San Antonio-based style director Erin Busbee is always on the go, seeking and learning about how fashion can be more, well, fashionable. Join style avatar Jake Gaines as he gets up close and personal with the woman behind the inimitable chic. How does our style expert Erin Busbee stay on trend and on the fashion edge? There is really no ‘typical’ day for Busbeestyle.com founder, Erin Busbee. One day she is in her home office in Boerne, taping style videos for her YouTube channel, writing fashion blogs, and selecting products for our “Acquire” section in The Society Diaries. The next… she is styling a photo shoot, a commercial, or teaching wardrobe basics to a group of professional women. Most recently, she was shooting videos for a Clinique campaign in New York.

Erin Busbee

“Reason number #1025 why I love what I do… it is never boring,” says Busbee. She moved to Texas in 2009, after meeting and marrying a Texan in New York City. “It was quite an adjustment moving from the upper West Side in Manhattan to the Texas Hill Country… both culturally and professionally. But, now I love it. The weather, the schools, the people… I can’t think of a better place to raise a family,” she confides. The fresh start also provided Busbee with the perfect opportunity to launch her style consulting business. “The business was always in the back of my mind in New York, but I was so nervous about leaving my full-time job. With the love and support of my husband, I was able to finally take the leap.” When she jumped in, she never looked back. Busbee shares her regular style expertise on the TV show, San Antonio Living, has appeared nationally on Good Morning America, too. She has written style pieces for powerhouse women like Tyra Banks (TypeF.com) and Maria Shriver (MariaShriver.com), and worked with major brands like Hallmark, Jergens, and global cosmetic giant, JAFRA. “I started by doing one-on-one sessions with clients, and occasionally I still work with women individually, but I realized that in order to grow and help more women, I needed to build my online brand and business.” And, Busbee’s brand is growing. She now reaches tens of thousands of women through her TV appearances, blog, You Tube channel, and myriad social media outreach.

THE VIBE: The “no ties allowed” dress code created a relaxing atmosphere that permeated the entire weekend. After a fun-filled reception Friday night at the home of Janell and Tio Kleberg on the King Ranch, clear skies and crisp weather greeted the guests the next morning, as they headed out for a myriad of activities including field shooting, a nature tour, or taking advantage of shopping at the Artist’s Market. Saturday evening was spectacular with cocktails, dinner, entertainment by Red Steagall, and a live auction that was as memorable as any over the past 22 years. GATHER SOUTH TEXAS

Honorees Tim and Karen Hixon THE HONOREES: “Salt of the Earth” was how Tim and Karen Hixon were introduced at the gala affair as “South Texans of the Year.” Their commitment to medical research, Trinity University, and museums in San Antonio and Ft. Worth were duly noted and their passion and support of major conservation issues of our day became the highlight of the accolades for them. Devoted to the great outdoors, their passion for wildlife research and outdoor activities fuels their conservation ethic. The Hixons are living symbols of what it means to care about wildlife conservation. They each have served with organizations like: the Texas Nature Conservancy Board, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, and as Trustees of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation. Karen Hixon serves nationally on the Board of the Peregrine Fund while Tim Hixon is proudly serving on the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Board and has also has served 17 years as a board member for the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute. The Hixon’s unbridled support for wildlife research, student fellowships, ocelot recovery, and habitat restoration is admirable. Their leadership in protecting Government Canyon State Natural Area, as well as the last great coastal prairie and wetland habitat on the Upper Texas coast, and the Powderhorn ranch, proves their dedication to the protection and conservation of wildlife and wildlife habitat. They have received national, regional and state awards and honors for their conservation efforts, including the prestigious Harvey Weil Conservationists of the Year award given by the Corpus Christi Rotary Club.

The Karen and Tim Hixon family

Few people have privately invested more of their resources in ocelot recovery than the Hixons. With approximately 80 ocelots left in the continental United States and all of them in isolated tracts of South Texas habitat near Raymondville, these spectacular cats are living on the precipice of survival. Due to the financial contributions of the Hixons, Dr. Michael Tewes at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute has been able to lead a focused ocelot research effort for over 30 years. The South Texans of the Year Award is a prestigious honor and one deserved by Tim and Karen Hixon. South Texas is a unique and splendid land and at the heart of this region are people like the Hixons who are devoted to it.

At promptly 9PM, guests then made their way to the grand, multi-tiered ballroom where they dined on scrumptious cuisine while engaging in lively conversation. At 11PM, the presentation of the women in white dresses began. Each debutante was escorted by a dashing gentleman in white tie, while a military cadet carried a flag of the country or state she represented, demonstrating just how international this centuries-long event has become. THE VIBE: The black-tie crowd began this “Off The Wall” evening inside the foyer of the Blanton, where patrons socialized over cocktails, marveling in awe of the massive Teresita Fernandez blue-hued art installation. Guests were then prompted across the street to the Bullock for the evening’s program where guests were wowed by the gorgeous shades of purple designed by the divine Mandarin Flower Company.

Ann Butler and Eddie Safady

Inside, attendees dined on cuisine catered by The Four Seasons, while event emcees Mickey Klein and Simone Wicha entertained and wowed with their impeccable wit that brushed all the right strokes. The program’s highlights included an inspiring video showcasing the newly unveiled upcoming Ellsworth Kelly project, as well as an inspiring tribute to outgoing University of Texas President Bill Powers, a longtime champion of the Blanton.

Ava and Steve Late

After the program wrapped, the action moved back to the Blanton where the “Art on the Edge” after party was already in full swing with a bevy of additional hipster artlovers, multiplying the energy of the evening as guests from both events danced the night away, capping off an evening of artistic inspiration the attendees will not soon forget.

A

s Eleanor Roosevelt said so astutely, “the purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” Barcelona, a centuries-old city turned hipster mecca, invites travelers on a true quest for unique experiences. Exquisite worldliness abounds within this city: succulent dining opportunities, historical and cultural landmarks, and infinitely exciting activities await travelers who land in one of the chicest cities on the planet. If you want to immerse yourself in an enriching and aweinspiring city with a heart of gold, Barcelona is the place be. Barcelona has flourished robustly in recent years, but that is no surprise to anyone who knows of the city. Film lovers may be familiar with high society filmmaker Whit Stillman’s Barcelona, a film that chronicles the trials and travails of singles in the sexy, sultry city that rarely sleeps. Barcelona’s real-life energy faithfully rivals its cinematic reputation. After hosting the Olympic Summer Games in 1992, the world caught a glimpse of the growth that the city underwent in preparation for the festivities. The event’s Olympics’ global spotlight highlighted state-ofthe-art enhancements throughout the city, including the augmentation of Catalan architecture throughout the city aimed toward increasing

its cultural flair, and a novel beach port that boasts a spectacular view of the Mediterranean. Barcelona has continued to thrive in the ensuing decades, drawing visitors from across the world. This dazzling metropolitan destination immediately enamors newcomers upon arrival. You may wonder, What is so enchanting about this city? What is everyone falling in love with? Barcelona is such an eclectic city that it truly has something for everyone. For the history buffs, there is the Gothic Quarter. For the beachcombers, there is the Barcelonetta Beach, and for the fashionistas there is high style shopping in Passeig de Gràcia. For the artfully inclined, there is the generous trace of artisanship that Antoni Gaudí

Park Güell (Gaudi) and Picasso left upon the city. A stay in Barcelona is never a bore simply because there’s so much to explore. STAY Location, location, location; it’s all about where you stay when visiting Barcelona. There are so many chic options, yet staying anywhere other than the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona, Hotel Bagues, The Majestic Hotel and Spa Barcelona, Olivia Balmes Hotel, or The W Barcelona would be a disservice to your experience in this lively, culturally rich Catalonian destination. If you love to wake up to a breathtaking view, grab a cocktail with other trendsetters, lounge by the pool, and hear the ocean waves while falling asleep, the The

W Barcelona will be your best choice. The W stands as one of the most favorable picks to lodge in Barcelona since it is directly on the beach in the prime retail area of Barcelonetta. Are you looking for simply superb? Then grab your walking shoes, your Amex card and book The Majestic Hotel, in the heart of the city on the Rodeo Drive of Barcelona, Passeig de Gràcia. You can shop till you drop, have a glass of fruit-laden sangria on a rooftop patio overlooking the city, and treat yourself to that soothing couples spa day to cap off a full day of indulgence. If you wish to discover contemporary Catalan style, you will want to stay at the luxurious Mandarin Oriental Barcelona, where you will be only steps away from your next Tiffany & Co. shiny blue box. The hotel, also located in the city’s famous Passeig de Gràcia Avenue, is acclaimed as one of Barcelona’s most luxurious and delightful hotel experiences, offering innovative dining, romantic suites, beautiful city views, and family-friendly accommodations. The Hotel Bagues is located in the Ciutat Vella, directly in the cultural heart of town, walking distance from the astoundingly grand Old Cathedral, Las Ramblas, and the Palau de la Musica Catalana. This five-star paradise is home to a bustling lounge, irresistible sauna, and truly beautiful architecture. If you want to stay a little further from the heart of tourism and closer to the L’Eixample district full of breathtaking architecture, eclectic boutiques and local Spanish delicacies, look no further than the Olivia Balmes Hotel. This modern boutique hotel is your ticket to experiencing the rich hospitality of the Barcelona natives at their finest. MAR • APR 2015

DINE The tantalizing cuisine in Barcelona will fulfill your epicurean desires and always leave you wanting more. In a city famous for its hearty cured ham, appetizing libations such as sparkling Cava wine and sangria, petite “tapas” dishes, and traditional paella, almost every restaurant offers these Iberian delicacies . Discerning diners won’t want to miss all the right places to indulge in the utmost Barcelonan experience. After a day at the beach under the glittering sun, stop by the renowned restaurant Cal Pep for a tasty repast. The basic principle of this restaurant makes the dining experience there inimitable: most of the restaurant seating is at one long, Continental- style bar and the cuisine is served in smaller-sized dishes called “tapas.” The bar’s communal tables and shareable tapas contribute to the sense of community, an aspect of Barcelona that is highly emphasized in the local culture. The eatery serves authentic Mediterranean dishes with seasonal cuisine changes. The really cool part? The restaurant has no menu. The servers surprise you with their favorite combination of cuisines based on what’s in season, making the meal even more exciting. Another restaurant famous for its tapas-style meals is Cervecería Catalana, which keeps its patrons coming back with its traditional specialties including “Pan con tomate”, “croquetas”, and “patatas bravas”. At Cerveceria Catalane, you can revel in Barcelona culture while indulging in a delectable meal. If you’re looking for a light lunch or afternoon pick-me-up, but still want to eat a traditional meal, Barri I Irrati is your destination. There you will stand at the bar to eat your meal, which consists of a variety of light tapas including both savory and sweet selections, so there is something for everyone. For a chic dinner alongside the scintillating Barcelona sea, Arenal is the restaurant of choice. Arenal allows customers to enjoy a breathtaking meal while enjoying an astonishing view. Especially known for its paella, a traditional Catalan dish that features a delightful combination of seafood, chicken and vegetables mixed with rice, Arenal’s take on this traditional dish stands above all other paellas in the city. It’s a must-try during your stay in Barcelona.

SEE During the Modernist art movement in Barcelona, Antoni Gaudí created an uproar with his work, and although at the time many locals might have disapproved his new artistic style, today his work is highly venerated and contributes to the city’s charm and appeal. Many travel to Barcelona solely to see the distinctive work of this architectural genius. To get a sense of what all the Gaudí fuss is about, you must see two especially illustrious sites: La Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell. Although Gaudí designed architecture all over the city, these two examples are the most profound. La Sagrada Familia is currently under construction - and has been in the process of being built since 1828. It is already gorgeous with its unique form, sculpture, and implementation of stained glass and marble, truly making it a modern world wonder. Parc Guell is another must-see Gaudí construction. The peaceful park overlooks the bustling city, offering viewers a glimpse of the spectacular skyline that eventually fades into the ocean. It is so easy to get lost in the natural beauty of this park, so let yourself wander among the mosaic patterns and elaborate artistic design that Gaudí created within it. For all of the art history lovers, a visit to the Barcelona Picasso Museum ranks as a strong favorite. The collections in this museum feature the artist’s work during his formative years and reflect his rapport with the city of Barcelona. The museum houses some of the artist’s most renowned pieces including artwork from his Blue Period such as The Pigeons, and Infanta Margarita Maria from his Las Meninas series. The Gothic Quarter, or Barrí Gotic sits in the Ciutat Vella district in the heart of the old city center. This historical area dates back to medieval times, featuring buildings that still stand from as far back as the Roman settlement. It is home to both the astounding Cathedral and the Jewish Quarter. When I first moved from New York City to Galveston Island, I was looking for something new. New York was loud, busy, and downright lovable, but it was in Galveston that I truly began to unwind from the stresses of city living and embrace the unique pleasures of the island. One of those pleasures was exploration, and it was during one of my jaunts on the east end of Galveston Island that I found Beachtown. What intrigued me about the project wasn’t just welcoming porches, views, or historically inspired architecture, but the planning that is instrumental in building a foundation for the future. The internationally renowned architecture Just Outside the POrch cafe in BeachtOwn and planning firm Duany-Plater Zyberk, creators of Seaside and Rosemary Beach Florida, had a vision for the future of Beachtown, a place where people, nature, and simplicity connect. It is a community invested in stronger foundations for Galveston’s future, and the only beachfront community in Galveston built to Fortified for Safer Living® standards, a program that focuses on stronger buildings to better resist natural disasters. As the executive Director of Galveston Sustainable Communities Alliance (GSCA), I am deeply invested in the idea of a strong foundation for growth. GSCA is a nonprofit organization that strives to increase education opportunities

for all children. We want to create a foundation and path to prosperity for every child, which means we focus on early education all the way to college and career preparation. We’ve also launched an interactive tool for parents of young children to teach vocabulary in a fun, easy way. In a sense, much like Beachtown is building the physical infrastructure and foundation for the present and future community, GSCA is establishing the mind trust to keep our city great by improving education for hundreds of children. In October, we’re looking forward to collaborating to host a red carpet affair, EDUFilm Screening: A REEL Look at Education. GSCA is excited, not only to showcase the importance of education, but to highlight the evening with locally sourced Coastal New American cuisine from the Porch Café in Beachtown. The partnership between GSCA and Beachtown shows building a firm foundation is a universal concept, from the minds of our children to the infrastructure t P c B of community. he

DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY Dancing With The Stars Austin Raises Record Funds For The Center For Child Protection By Rob Giardinelli • Photography By Jeff Loftin, Dale Murphy and Farid Zarrinabadi

THE SCENE: On a splendid Sunday evening, nearly 1,000 guests converged on the Hilton Hotel in downtown Austin for an evening of fun, laughter and friendly competition. Why? It was the 8th annual Dancing with the Stars gala, a mainstay of the city’s social scene, as attendees were treated to an evening of choreographed performances for a very worthy cause.

Albert Tailleur and Francie Little

The evening began in the foyer of the hotel’s ballroom with a cocktail hour where VIP’s mixed it up with the 10 “localebrity” dancing stars who were about to share their terpsichorean talents on the dance floor. The festivities then adjourned into the ballroom, where guests dined while viewing a video of how the Center for Child Protection helps the residents of Austin and Travis County. Then, a silent auction was held featuring such packages as a New York Fashion Week Experience, a week in Snowmass and a VIP Austin experience – all told the silent auction raised over $400,000. The evening continued with the dance performances with an audience-voted winner and concluded as everyone converged on the dance floor dancing the night away to spins by DJ Johnny Bravvo.

THE CAUSE: Presented by Lexus of Austin, this year’s “tour de dance,” co-chaired by Venus Strawn and Katie Jaffe raised over $1.2 million dollars for the Center for Child Protection, which provides a safe haven for Travis County children who are the victims of abuse and neglect.

THE VIBE: The theme was football, but the vibe of the event was forward-thinking educational progress. Questions for Bradshaw ranged from the importance of education and a good teacher to his personal life. He held the audience’s rapt attention with many moments of the the entire ballroom laughing and applauding. To raise additional funds at the event, guests waved the Terrible Towels, a rally towel used by the Pittsburgh Steelers, which was a fun addition to a well-executed event. THE CAUSE: Co-founders Susan D. Krohn and Mary Yenik, event chairs Carol and Mike Linn and DeeDee and Wallis Marsh were thrilled by the huge success of the event which raised close to $450,000 for the program that works with HISD schools to give educators strategies to more effectively work with their most challenging students in often difficult environments.
