A very warm welcome to you all today including our visitors from Cornish Pirates who have travelled some distance in order to fulfil this our first ever fixture at any level. We have 4 matches against the Pirates this season with home and away games in both the league and Championship Cup, so there will be a lot of rubber as well as effort expended both in and out of each other’s company before the season ends.
Last week we faced Ampthill for the second time this season at home, and recorded our second victory at Championship level although as this was a Cup game our league standing has not altered. Having narrowly lost at Ampthill 3 weeks ago in the league, this was a welcome reverse of fortune, outscoring our visitors by 3 tries to one in the process. It was also chance for many players to experience a start at this level and stake their claim for squad places going forward. It is evident that a large squad is required for the attritional rugby that Championship rugby demands and it’s good to see so many players stepping up to the plate at this level. This can be attributed in part to a second team with possibly the longest unbeaten record in our history and is testimony to the quality of players and coaching staff at this level. Last
Friday night the team faced a Chester side in second place in the league away from home and we congratulate them on recording yet another resounding victory to stay top of the table.
Our visitors today have proved their credentials over many years of playing Championship standard rugby for the last 20 years. It all started back with two rival clubs in Penzance (1876) and Newlyn (1894), who eventually merged in 1945 with Pirates as a nickname. Penzance & Newlyn subsequently produced a number of international players including Stack Stevens who played for the Lions circa 1970. A period in the doldrums resulted in them playing in the Cornwall & Devon league by the advent of league rugby around 1987, but a resurgence ended up with promotion to National 1 ( one league below the Premiership ) by 2003 with games against sides including Bristol. By 2005 a further push for promotion resulted in a change of name to Cornish Pirates with a move to a new base at Camborne for the next 5 years. 2010 saw a return to the Mennaye Field in Penzance and between 2018 and 2022 they have finished no lower than 5th. in the Championship. In 2021 they probably had their most famous victory beating Saracens at home in the league.

Whilst this will no doubt be yet another tough encounter, it will be an opportunity for Caldy with home advantage to maintain winning form, and continue to build on our ambition to become a regular fixture at Championship level. Whatever the result we hope that Pirates enjoy the Caldy experience today on this their first ever visit to Paton Field.
Off the pitch we have continued to upgrade our facilities with further improvements to the floodlighting and to the bank now virtually complete. Other improvements have been carried out to satisfy Championship requirements both on and off the field and within the clubhouse areas. Our thanks go to all those responsible for putting in so much effort in such a limited timescale to ensure that we can all enjoy the level of rugby that is now on offer, and to our sponsors who have made this financially possible.
Our thanks must also go to our team of ground staff, the Last of the Summer Wine (LOSW for short), who freely give enormous amounts of their time to produce and maintain the standard of pitches that we all possibly take a little too much for granted. You only had to be here for the pre -season game against Sale Sharks and the recent home games to appreciate the wonderful aspect and playing facilities that the club now has to offer. I also need to mention the contribution of all those involved in the day to day operation and management of the club including our bar, catering and other members of staff without whom the club could not effectively function.
Thanks also to all of our members, supporters and spectators for your incredible support so far this season and hopefully going forward as we continue to face the mounting challenges ahead. Your contribution cannot be underestimated and is an essential part of our effort to maintain our status with our centenary season just around the corner. We have certainly benefitted from larger crowds as a result of promotion, so let’s all get fully behind our team in the weeks and months ahead come wind, rain or shine and give them the positive support and encouragement they deserve. We have increased the capacity for our prematch lunches which are becoming increasingly popular and are available to book on line. If you wish to do this or become a member/purchase a season ticket or help us in any way please refer to our website for further details.
Finally, I sincerely hope that you enjoy your visit to Caldy today, come win lose or draw, and that we can all fully appreciate the fantastic level of rugby now on offer at Paton Field. Let’s celebrate this wonderful game of ours in the spirit intended, making new friendships on this occasion and hopefully sharing a few drinks in the traditional way after the game.
ArmitageAfter rugby first appeared in Cornwall in the late 19th Century, Penzance RFC was formed in 1876 and Newlyn RFC around 1894-95. Then, in 1945, the two clubs amalgamated to form Penzance & Newlyn RFC.
After a difficult first season in National One, the Penzance & Newlyn club, whose youth team products have helped produce England stars Jack Nowell and Luke Cowan-Dickie, finished a lofty fourth in 2005 – the year when it was decided to adopt the name ‘Cornish Pirates’ for its first team.
The newly named team, although still based in Penzance, played one season at Kenwyn, near Truro (2005-06), followed by four seasons at Camborne. The winning of the EDF Energy National Trophy at Twickenham in 2007 was a wonderful achievement, as was becoming the first ever winners of the British & Irish Cup when the Cornish Pirates beat Munster at Camborne in May 2010, after which the Cornish Pirates returned to play games back in Penzance - at their ancestral Mennaye Field home.
Credit was due to the Cornish Pirates for reaching the RFU Championship finals in both 2011 and 2012, losing to Worcester Warriors and London Welsh respectively, whilst in seasons that followed the focus was on achieving consolidation during what was an uncertain and testing period. However, the team still performed capably, and when fresh impetus and exciting plans reference the Stadium for Cornwall were given a heightened profile the results improved still further. Indeed, in five years from 2018 to 2022 the Pirates finished 4th, 5th, 3rd, 4th, and 3rd again, with joint head coaches Gavin Cattle and Alan Paver influential. A highlight, of course, was a sensational 25-17 win at home to the might of Saracens in March 2021.
After finishing commendably third in the League last season, and reaching the semi-final of the Cup, for various reasons the Cornish Pirates then saw the departure of several influential players. This meant, of course, that replacements had to be sought which led to a good number of new faces recruited.
After the usual tough pre-season, two friendly matches were played. First up was an away fixture to Taunton Titans (won 43-14) and then there was a home encounter against an Exeter Chiefs selection (won 42-14). As for the League campaign, that star ted with a 21-14 result versus Richmond at the Mennaye Field and then a 23-19 victory away at Nottingham. So far, so good.
Two end of September defeats followed, at home to Bedford Blues (41-21) and away to Jersey Reds (21-10), before the Pirates opening game in October saw them win narrowly, 15-13, at home to Ampthill. Ahead of the Cup, two further League games were played, with the present seventh-placed side losing 32-19 away to Coventry and then winning 32-0 at home to London Scottish. As for the Cup, the Pirates won their opener 62-7 away to Richmond last Saturday.
A Cornish ‘Pirate’ since 2019, Kiwi-born Shae grew up in Napier and played junior rugby from an early age for the Taradale rugby club. He represented Hawkes Bay at all age grades in his youth and post school made 50 appearances for Otago University. He was also honoured to represent the Otago Sevens team (2015/16), New Zealand Universities (2016), North Otago (2016 – in the NZ Heartland Championship), North Harbour (2017 – in the Mitre 10 Cup), and Hawkes Bay Magpies (2018 – in the Mitre 10 Cup).
Completing university, Shae graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce, and at the time of his arrival in England was looking forward to returning to his roots, because his father was born in London and other family members live in the SE.
A hard-running centre, Shae has to date made 45 appearances for the Cornish Pirates and has scored 11 tries.

The Cornish Pirates confirmed in late June 2022 that Seb had signed a one-year contract with the club.
After being born in Hampshire, Seb spent his childhood in Hong Kong and first played rugby there for Valley RFC Academy at the age of nine. Returning to England in 2007, he was educated at Eastbourne College where he captained both the 1st XV and the 7s team.
From 2012 to 2015, Seb undertook a degree in History at the University College London, and he also started his club rugby career. An experienced performer, he has played for teams including Bedford, Jersey, Rotherham, and Hartpury, from where he was initially loaned to the ‘Cherry & Whites’ of Gloucester Rugby in 2020/21, and then quickly earned a permanent deal for 2021/22, a season which unfortunately saw him injured. Ahead of today’s fixture, Seb has made eight appearances for the Cornish Pirates.

For Cornish forward Cory, this is his third season dual registered from Exeter Chiefs with the Cornish Pirates.
It was early in February 2021 that he was first confirmed as one of the Chiefs’ players to be dual registered with the Cornish Pirates for the belated 2020/21 Championship campaign. He made two appearances, and then another 18 when making his mark last season.
Cory played his early rugby for Wadebridge, and was educated at Bodmin College. For Exeter Chiefs, Cory initially represented them from under 16s and later played in the Premiership Cup and the ‘A’ League competitions. He also, in 2019/20, when playing for Taunton Titans, helped the Somerset team achieve promotion from National Two South.
To date, Cory has made 27 appearances for the Cornish Pirates.

Caldy secured their first home win of the season in Pool C of the Championship Cup against Ampthill in challenging conditions at Paton Field on Saturday. Both sides had chances from the league match a fortnight ago and it was the visitors who started the better and took the lead after just four minutes. After a successful scrum in the midfield the ball went wide, a great interplay between Josh Skelcey and Jackson saw Jackson going over for the opening score of the afternoon.
From the restart, Caldy looked
to bounce back immediately and were unlucky just minutes later. But the visitors knew that they wouldn’t have it all their own way.
Caldy were rewarded at the midway point of the first half after a rolling maul turned into a ruck which saw Ryan Higginson go over in the corner for his first of the season.
Caldy looked the more powerful of the two sides and were unfortunate to be penalised on the half hour allowing Conor Rankin to stretch the Ampthill lead to five points at Half time. Rankin scored the first points of
the second half through another penalty, however, this was the moment that the Caldy tide started to turn.
After two close misses from Ben Jones penalties, Caldy found the breakthrough they were looking for after a penalty advantage on the Ampthill 22 Metre line saw great cross-field play involving four players, which resulted in a try for Callum Ridgeway and the home side players and supporters were confident of a turnaround. The comeback was complete when Nye Thomas made a break of 50 meters which saw the ball go to another Caldy first XV
The final minutes of the game were a battle between both sides with the weather conditions not helping either side and unfortunately, Caldy Captain JJ Dickinson came off with what looked like a hamstring injury but will be assessed in the week.
Speaking after the match Head Coach Matt Cairns said about the performance “It’s always good to win and I think that’s what we needed, we are still finding our feet at this level and improving every week”.
A win at home!! Last week it was great to get our first win of the season at home even though it was in the Cup. We made a couple of changes to the team and the lads did particularly well in what proved to be tough conditions. In particular our summer signing Josh Walters who was picked in the Championship Team of The Week.
Ampthill pretty much fielded a first choice team so it was encouraging that we were dominant, conceding one try at the very start of the game. The lads defended excellently and took our chances well when they were presented. This has been a work on for us and something that we need to keep improving over
the next few weeks before the league campaign starts again. We will give a few more opportunities this week against what we know will be a very strong full time Cornish Pirates team. It’s a different challenge every week for the squad and we know this will be another step up against a Pirates side that seems to be improving each week.
The aim now is to rest a few senior player sand blood some youngsters whilst working on our game to be in best possible shape when the league resumes. I hope you enjoy the game, as ever we need as much support as we can get.
