INTRODUCTION

TO FABULOUS LAS VEGAS, NEVADA! The entertainment capital of the world welcomes you and your family to ”the good life.” Our rich culture screams it and has plenty to offer outside of the lights, glitz and glamour that lure you out of McCarran International Airport.

As of the 2010 Census, the Clark County Population is 1,951,269 people. Clark County includes the cities of Las Vegas, Boulder City, Henderson, Mesquite, and North Las Vegas and is the most populated county in the state of Nevada.

traces its roots back to the nomadic Paleo-Indians that first settled in the valley. Evidence of this ancient people can be found in petroglyphs, pictographs, baskets, and other evidence found in the area. The Paiute Indians would live in nearby mountains during the summer and spend the winter in the valley.

In 1829, Rafael Rivera, a scout for the New Mexico trading party on his way to Los Angeles, named the valley, “Las Vegas,” which means “the meadows.” In stark contrast to the surrounding desert, the valley supported extensive greenery due to artesian wells which naturally irrigated parts of the land.

In 1905 Las Vegas was incorporated between thriving Salt Lake City and Southern California. At 19.18 square miles with 800 inhabitants, it’s population was less than one percent of today’s population. It was to be a railroad town; a halfway point for travelers crossing the desert in the early 1900’s. For 25 years, Las Vegas was merely a rest stop for many weary travelers.

HISTORY On March 19, 1911, gambling was legalized and within one month, the city issued six gambling licenses.

Las Vegas’ first major growth surge happened in 1931 with the construction of the Hoover Dam. The population swelled from 5,000 to 25,000 overnight.

A combination of Las Vegas business owners, Mormon financiers, and the mafia sought to capitalize on the predominantly male construction workers by providing entertainment in the way of casinos and showgirl theatres.

In 1945, following World War II, tourism and entertainment take top spot as Las Vegas’ largest employer.

Top entertainment and lavishly decorated hotels become mainstream in what was once a rest stop.

Beginning in the mid-80s, Las Vegas encounters its second population boom. The population exploded between 1985 and 1995 and broke 1,000,000,000 residents soon after.

NEWCOMER INFORMATION THE VALLEY’S BEST KEPT SECRET While many people think “heat” when they think of Las Vegas, the weather is actually one of the Valley’s best kept secrets! The climate is generally very pleasant, and although our seasons aren’t the traditional seasons one might enjoy on the East Coast, our seasons are actually well defined.

The climate is ideal for the outdoors most of the year. Spring and fall are arguably the most enjoyable seasons of the region and last longer than the hot summer months most people are familiar with. While we are dominated by a dry summer heat, over several weeks each summer, we encounter heavy rain in monsoon season, typically during July and August.

Summers can feel long and hot since summer nights are warm and often accompanied by warm, mild breezes. Average annual precipitation is about 4.5 inches.

Winters are pleasant and cool during the holiday months. The average low is 34 degrees with daytime highs near 60 degrees.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Spring Mountains just west of Las Vegas keep our winters nearly as dry as our summers.

NEWCOMER INFORMATION GEOGRAPHY Las Vegas is located in the Mojave Desert and is the largest urban settlement in the area. The valley is wide, approximately 600 square miles, extending from northwest to southeast.

The region’s highest peak, Mount Charleston, towers above the city at 11,918 feet above the valley floor. With its Alpine forest, it is a stark contrast to the desert in the valley.

The city is 2,028 feet above sea level, a considerable elevation for such a densely populated metropolis.

The unique landscape of Las Vegas is highlighted by the many mountain ranges that surround it. To the north is the Sheep Range; to the east are the Muddy Mountains and the El Dorado Range; the Black Mountains are in the South; while the Spring Mountains line the West.

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES The offices of the Nevada DMV are committed to provide motorists the necessary information on Nevada driving laws and regulations. They provide booklets to new applicants and drivers outlining the rules and laws of the state. The DMV offices also offer voter registration at the time of application or renewal of a driver’s license.

New residents have 30 days to secure a new driver’s license in Las Vegas. In order to obtain a license, you must pay $22 or $17 for those 65 and older.

All applicants must take a vision test. Other tests will be waived if you are 25 years or older and have no special restrictions; your out-of-state license is valid and you are applying for the same class of license; and/or you have no more than two moving violations and no suspensions, revocations, cancellations, or denials in the past four years. If you do not meet these requirements, you will have to take a written test and possibly a skills test.

PET OWNERS If you are a pet owner, be aware that Clark County requires licenses for owning a pet dog or cat. CLARK COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT (CCSD) CCSD is the 5th largest school district in the United States. It covers nearly 8,000 square miles, serves 336 schools and over 300,000 students. The valley is subdivided into three School Divisions and Area Service Centers managed by the School Superintendent. EDUCATION PRIVATE SCHOOL EDUCATION There are 112 private schools in Clark County, NV servicing 22,543 students; 86 of these schools lie within Las Vegas city limits. The average private school tuition is $8730 for elementary schools and $8,684 for high schools. The average acceptance rate is 86%. More than half of Clark County private schools are religiously affiliated.

CHARTER SCHOOLS There are 24 charter schools in the Las Vegas area, some with multiple locations.

Charter schools are a unique public offering in which are allowed innovative freedoms with their teaching methods in order to advance student achievement.

Henderson District Public Library consists of six libraries throughout the city of Henderson. A bookmobile outreach team serves many locations including senior centers and facilities.

In addition to its extensive collection of books and movies, the library has a digital database that enables people to download ebooks, historical photos, and audio books quickly and easily.

The Henderson District Public Libraries have dedicated pages for kids and teens, providing students with homework assistance weekdays from 3 – 7pm. The library also provides computer classes in all branches.

The North Las Vegas Library District has three branches: The North Las Vegas Library, the Aliante Library, and the Alexander Library.

The North Las Vegas Library has the largest book collection (92,000 items in all) with a total of 18,000 square feet of library space. The Aliante library offers books, videos, DVDs, magazines, and newspapers on its shelves.

The Alexander Library is the newest location, boasting a two-acre park with walking paths and gardens.
