CELEBRATING 90 YEARS OF STUDENT JOURNALISM

The age of technology and tragedy period were influenced by the achievements of the Women’s Right’s Movement, which culminated in an amendment that granted all women to right to vote nationally in 1920.

“American Dream.” Some of these include the commissioning of Route 66 in 1926, and the development of black and white TV. On June 6, 1933, the first drive-in movie theater was opened in New Jersey, which inspired a crop of new theaters

across America. Many of the greatest buildings of the 20th century were built during the 1920’s to the 1940’s. Construction for the Empire State building began in 1930, and was completed and opened in 1931. Other notable building developments included the Hoover Dam (completed in 1935) and the Golden Gate Bridge (completed in 1937).

Those who experienced these decades also knew tragedy. The Eighteenth Amendment went into effect in 1920, effectively banning all alcohol beverages in America until 1933. The Great Depression spanned from 1929 to 1939. The Spanish Civil War happened simultaneously, from 1936 to 1939. World War II began in 1939. American military forces became involved in the Second World War in 1941, after the Japanese attack on the Pearl Harbor Naval Base. The Hindenburg, a German passenger zeppelin, exploded at the end of the ship’s 36th flight in 1937.

The Snapper’s start The Millersville University we’ve all grown to love is actually nowhere close to the Millersville that students in the 1920s attended. Of course, there were updates in technology and staffing since then, but the fundamental structure of the university has changed over time too. Initially, Millersville was known as the Lancaster County Normal School; only five years later is was renamed the Millersville State Normal School.

The Snapper made its debut in 1925. Also in 1925, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald was published, Mussolini became dictator of Italy, and New York City became the largest city in the world. Two years later, Millersville became a teaching university, and remained that way until 1959.

During The Snapper’s first 20 years, it went through many changes. The Snapper change from a pamphlet format to something resembling a current newspaper. The logo changed various times, and even something as fundamental of its name has been changed (albeit only once) since its inception. The Snapper was originally called The Tipster.

The 1920s to the 1940s were known as “The Silent Generation,” due to the fact that fewer children were conceived during these times. Millersville University only had one president change during this time period--Charles H. Gordinier left in 1929, and Landis Tanger succeeded him. The Great Depression occurred in the late 1920s, and it’s on record that President Tanger fought hard to make sure that Millersville didn’t go under during the depression. While many schools and businesses had lost everything they had, Millersville managed to stay afloat.

The look of The Snapper in its early years appeared to be dependent upon who was editor in chief at the time. Some years had section editors, while some years had only the editor in chief, business manager and assistant editor listed, filing the rest under “editorial staff,” “staff writers” and “business staff.” Some years had the students pay for a subscription,

while some offered it for free. In addition, some years had papers distributed weekly, while some were distributed monthly.

One thing is for sure, The Snapper had evolved a lot in that short span of time. In the first 20 years, The Snapper saw a vast rotation of staff, two university presidents, a school name change, several format changes and the adoption of the name The Snapper. Without the actions of those crafty and thoughtful individuals, The Snapper would not have reached its 90th anniversary.

I also have wonderful memories of our Snapper trips to Columbia University, New York City, when we attended the conferences of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and usually won a first prize in the College-University Division. Since I had served as a high school delegate to the convention, I had become very familiar with New York and the learning experiences available through CSPA. During my junior year at Millersville, I was fortunate to be voted as the President-Elect of the Columbia University Scholastic Press Association, College-University Division.

Along with Professor Hite and Colonel Joseph Murphy of Columbia University, I planned the conference for the year 196162. Through this position, I developed strong public speaking and convention leadership skills. My correspondence with Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt tops my list of most memorable experiences that were a result of my connection with the Columbia University Scholastic Press Association and The Snapper .

U p o n graduation from MSC, I was drafted by the US Army and I received instruction on an artillery base at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. Later, I graduated from Camp Chaffee Leadership School and was assigned to serve in FECOM (Far East Command).

This usually meant having to go to Korea.

A year later I was sports editor and the next co-editor of the Snapper. It was a time of turmoil in the country and across the world, but it didn’t seem to affect sleepy Millersville. tious. I turned that experience into a reporter’s job at the Intell Journal, but soon after I joined the Peace Corps in South America. I never went back to journalism, but my Snapper experience is with me even today in my work as a writing instructor at a community college in Delaware.

THE SNAPPER 1946-1965

Millersville State College. As a member of the sports staff I was able to apply many of my ideas,

rea. I received a terrific education in South Korea and Japan. When I was offered an opportunity to orient at the military newspaper my hand went up immediately! After a brief interview, I was told that if a jeep picked me up the next morning I would be assigned to PIO (Public Information Office).

They asked me what kind of newspaper experiences I had and I told them about the Vidette and the Snapper.

I never saw the sergeant that recruited me but it turned out that I had been reported to TIE (Troop Information and Education). Wow, I finally found a home with TIE and was recruited as a journalist! Our newspaper, “The Front Line” was edited by Sergeant Hickey. I wanted that position when he rotated home, so I really worked on my typing.

While Hickey looked toward his trip home, he raided the general’s liquor closet and drank too much in his celebrations. He was in bad shape and turned the paper over to me. Five days later General Caham informed our captain about the recent changes in the paper

and then I was the editor of “The Front Line.” Later, the division needed someone in Seoul to edit the “The Rock of the Marne,” and they wanted me to go to Seoul and edit the newspaper. It was thrilling and both papers won Far East rewards. It was me, the guy from the Snapper who did it.

Now I am a Professor Emeritus from Millersville University. I taught an integrated curriculum at Edward Hand in Lancaster, where we traveled around the world in 180 days and of course had our own 7th grade newspaper. I was awarded Most Favorite Teacher two years in a row in Lancaster Newspaper and Pilot Club contest. Later on, I taught World Cultures and US History at JP McCaskey and I coached basketball and baseball. Our baseball record still stands. In 1960, I moved to Millersville State College and it was my first year as part-time scout with the New York Yankees. I traveled to Western Europe with Temple University’s Study Abroad program and since then have traveled all over the world!

JANET SIMON: first female sports editor

Janet Simon, 65

I was a member of the Snapper staff between 1961 and 1965, when Professor Earle Hite was the advisor. I started as a sports writer, then was named Women’s Sports Editor, and eventually became the first woman to hold the position of Sports Editor for all sports, both men’s and women’s. In addition to writing game summaries and sports news and features, as Sports Editor, I also wrote the weekly “Pirates’ Den” column of sports commentary.

During that time period, two 1960’s MSC graduates and Snapper sports writers and editors attained dream jobs in the professional sports world. Larry Shenk was named public relations director of the Philadelphia Phillies and Phil Itzoe was hired as the assistant public relations man for the Baltimore Orioles.

One of the highlights of my Snapper Sports Editor tenure occurred through these connections. Phil Itzoe secured tickets for Earle Hite and several Snapper staffers to attend a Sunday afternoon Orioles baseball game.

a group of staffers and Earle Hite would go to the printer’s in Lancaster to do final editing, headline writing, and copy reading.

The paper in that era was set in movable type and then printed. I still possess my end of year Snapper banquet award of a packet of movable type tied in red and white ribbons for the “Hellbox Award” given to the staffer who contributed the most unused type to the “Hellbox” for discarded type from stories which were too long to fit in the allotted space.

I believe I won that award two years in a row. Brevity was never one of my strong points as a reporter!!

My time spent working on the Snapper staff was one of the highlights of my four years at Millersville. Although I never went into professional journalism, I have maintained my love of writing by reporting news for the daily paper of my graduate university, editing newsletters for several organizations including one currently via desktop online publishing, and writing published journal articles.

men’s and women’s sports. I got to know Dr. Gene Carpenter, Head Football Coach in a more than casual mode. I kept in touch after graduation and when I would show up at football practice, he would always come and to talk to me.

I also saw him at university and alumni functions. Shortly before he retired, he saw me at a University function, came up to me, put his hand around my shoulder and told me he had been going “through his things” and came upon a picture of the two of us together. He said, “We have known each other for a long time.” I have also met other coaches since graduation, they usually recognize me and we usually chat about our time at MU. I also got to know many of the administrators in my role as a sports reporter.

The continued development of- writing . skills while a member of the Snapper staff served me well in my professional career and , I received kudos for my writing skills. Later, I developed a good grasp of basic statistics and I was; often called upon to write reports and position papers for managerial decision making ; ; which included narratives, statistics, interpretation of data and statistics and recommended actions for managerial decision making.

Changes for all at MU

Caputo. When students hear that name they often think of Caputo Hall, the home of the science department. However, behind the name was a Millersville president, Joseph A. Caputo. Caputo, a native of New Jersey, had an degree in chemistry, however he served the second longest term as president in Millersville University’s (MU) history.

Caputo’s legacy left an imprint on Millersville and its campus. He reorganized campus affairs and strengthened the foundation of MU’s historic relationship with Lancaster County and integrated social diversity and tolerance into the core values. With the restructuring of Millersville campus, the social spectrum evolved into an inclusive hub of multiplicity.

In 1993, Dr. Bernice Rydell became the first woman appointed vice president. Then in 2003, MU elected the first African American female provost and chief academic officer, Dr. Francine G. McNairy. With the election McNairy, the entire educational spectrum began to shift. Through her term, MU adopted an international studies program, and in 1993, adopted women’s studies, African American studies and Latino studies minors.

The different focuses soon became a catalyst of change; students and the community began to highlight global and social issues.

With the coupling of education and the technological age, Millersville began to see the ideas of gender, race and cultural identity become integrated into the campus community.

From there, MU founded the Center for Politics and Public Affairs, the Wellness Center and the Women’s Center. Administration began to focus on admitting students with a higher academic capacity and students of differing background and race. The academia and student life flourished and the campus thus expanded.

But in 1993, Millersville faced steep budget cuts, leading the institution to reduce the staff by 25 and classes by 50. Through this trial, MU converged and established a strong relationship with alumni and the local community and Commonwealth, leading to its eventual financial stability.

Athletics was still a large part of the campus community and assisted in the establishment of “Marauder Pride”. During the time period, women’s basketball flourished under Coach Mary Flieg, who led the team to win four PSAC division titles and 25 games in a single season. Gene Carpenter led MU’s football to team success, and John Kochan led

In retrospect, my tenure as reporter and features editor of “The Snapper” seems all too brief. In the mid-90’s, we stored our stories on antiquated 5-1/4 inch floppy disks.

When our computers went down in the days before mass storage, while the internet was still slow and relatively primitive, it meant that the editorial staff had to stay up all night to piece the layouts back together again.

This was done out of respect for the campus institution we served regardless of other academic and social commitments. We worked without pay, sitting through board meetings and visiting local eateries, trying to find the thread of a story that might hopefully interest our fellow students.

After college, my path in life led me away from journalism to corporate America. The work ethic I learned as a student journalist is something I still apply to my life and career. The world has changed a lot since those days. I look at the current state of journalism with some sense of disappointment. Seemingly endless stories con-

fer celebrity status on those who ultimately prove themselves to be merely human and undeserving of their inflated relevance while more pertinent stories go unreported.

Facts should speak for themselves but news reports increasingly read like opinion pages. Learning the basics of reporting and editing also served to make me aware of editorial bias in the stories covered by various media outlets. Even when I may agree with the opinion, I lament the heavy-handed way in which it is often expressed.

My advice for any aspiring journalist is to be thorough in reporting the facts and find the point of interest in each story, no matter how dull a campus assignment may seem. If the facts lead you to one point of view then report them with minimal bias and trust the intelligence of your audience to draw their own conclusions. It may seem like a thankless job at times but never forget that you are carrying on an important tradition both to our campus and our country.

You will someday be able to look back on your tenure at “The Snapper” with a sense of pride like I do.

My name is Rob Kuestner, during my junior and senior years at Millersville, I worked as the sports editor for The Snapper. I am currently the Eagles Content Producer for NBC10 in Philadelphia. I am exceedingly proud of our accomplishments at The Snapper.

You’ll probably laugh (and this makes me feel ancient to write) but I am proud to say I am responsible for (what I believe to be) the first color edition of The Snapper and the first sports pull-out edition of The Snapper.

That specific pull-out section profiled the 1994 PSAC Basketball Tournament that came to Millersville. Millersville was the

number one seed and won the Conference Tournament, eventually losing to Philadelphia Textile in the NCAA D-2 Playoffs My role at The Snapper helped me chart a course professionally. It taught me so much about media, how to handle myself in professional settings and-most importantly--how to write effectively. I look back at some of what I wrote back then and laugh. It wasn’t very good; but it was a starting point. A launching pad to a career that has taken me to World Series games, Super Bowls, NBA Finals, Stanley Cups and major golf championships.

All these years later, I still love sports and I still love writing. My time with The Snapper played a pivotal role in my life.

Councilman reflects on experience

Being a member of The Snapper staff definitely played a major role in my time as an undergraduate at Millersville. When I arrived at Millersville in the fall of 1997, The Snapper was one of the first groups with which I got involved.

I served as Sports Editor for my high school (Taylor Allderdice in Pittsburgh, PA) newspaper and shortly after arriving on campus I became a sports reporter. and by the end of my first semester I was the Assistant Sports Editor of The Snapper. Covering the Marauder football team led me to press briefings with legendary Millersville Coach, Gene Carpenter. I also had the opportunity to cover several other teams and write a weekly Sports column in The Snapper, which made me feel at home on campus right away.

Working with colleagues like Jim Murphy, Megan Longo, Lana Deist, Adam Zurn, and Corey Clayton we put together strong sports sections and editions of the newspaper. I remember eating a great deal of pizza and working late into the night to make sure that we were producing sports content at a high level. The editors were also kind enough to let me write about arts and entertainment, which, led to a preview of a brand new show back in 1997-1998 named Dawson’s Creek. As my sophomore year concluded I was elected Student Body President and therefore had to play a new, different role

I continued writing weekly columns called “From the President’s Desk” for the next two years as a mechanism to share with students about what was going on with the Senate.

in my life. My wife, Erin (MU 2003 alum) and I are definitely Marauders for Life. Millersville played an extremely large role in my future life as an elected official, non-profit manager, and author. I attribute much of my success to Millersville and am very thankful for the experiences that our alma mater and The Snapper provided me from 1997-2002.

Berlin Wall falls too late for The Snapper Peter Yerger ‘90 I was The Snapper’s commentary editor on November 9, 1989 when the Berlin Wall fell. It was, as most of the history majors reading this could tell you, the defining political moment of an age: an end to the Cold War and the death knell of communism.

I wish I could tell you that The Snapper’s newsroom was a cataclysm of adrenaline and coffee, with editors leaning over tables randomly screaming, “Get me rewrite!” and with crumpled drafts of breathless, well-informed opinions strewn underfoot. I wish I could tell you that I sat at my thick oak desk immersed in thought, desperate to find the finest words to encapsulate these events as the publishing deadline approached.

And I could tell you these things, of course, and you’d have no reason to disbelieve me. History, af-

ter all, has a rich tradition of disingenuous revisionism.

Here is what actually happened: 26 years ago, The Snapper was printed on Wednesdays. The Berlin Wall fell on a Thursday.

On a typical Thursday, we were rarely in the newsroom except perhaps to socialize. Now, to my credit, I was probably still in the building at some point, but it’s far more likely that I was playing pinball. When we finally did go to press, Germany did make the front page, but as something of an anecdote. My opinion column that week, as it was most weeks, was column-inch after columninch of navel-gazing.

The campus slumbered through the geopolitical earthquake. We didn’t even know what we didn’t know. The Internet was in its infancy and was not yet used at The Snapper. There were few

televisions on campus, mostly in the dormitory lobbies, and no one I know would have paid attention to the nightly news; those televisions were there for music videos and so-terrible-it’s-good cable movies.

So the Wall fell, and somehow we graduated, and the world beat its swords into cellphones.

None of us is insulated now from faraway lands and faraway problems. I could not, even if I wanted to, ignore a major world event.

Within moments of its happening, there will be an insistent flashing blue light on my phone letting me know that Something Terrible Has Happened, followed inexorably by a Greek chorus of vapid opinions and Facebook prayers.

On the whole, it seems good to be more connected to the world, but the marvels of this Information Revolution come with new dangers. Significantly, the

merchants of information are no longer journalists aspiring to a higher ideal, but boardroom executives aspiring to pad the next quarterly statement. “Whatsoever things are true” has been replaced with “whatever gets us clicks”.

There are now entire media networks, and not a few presidential candidates, which prey upon the prejudice and ignorance of their base rather than choose to inform and advance a national dialogue.

Diogenes, armed with a lamp and looking for a honest man, must now consider that the lamplight itself may betray him.

I was invited to share my thoughts on how my time at The Snapper has affected me, and I thought that was curious, as my time at The Snapper was hardly illustrious. In fact, my entire four years at Millersville is a thick catalogue of poor choices and self-important idiocy, and my

service at The Snapper was that in miniature. But I did learn one important thing, something more important now than ever: Question your sources.

You are now drowning in information. Question its source and intent. Is it there to inform you or to manipulate you? In what context, if any, is the information provided? Is that context accurate or misleading? Is your gut response to the article emotional or intellectual? What does the author stand to gain from publishing? Are you willing to be critical of a position even if you want to agree with it? These are healthy questions to consider when reading anything from a state paper down to a Tinder profile.

Writing for the new millennium In Millersville News: Millersville saw a new president enter in April 2013. Dr. John Anderson took over as the 14th president of Millersville University. He replaced Dr. Francine McNairy.

Anderson works to make the university more sustainable. He also restructured his cabinet. Millersville built new suites for its students. Millersville is currently building more suites so that all students will be living in suites on the south side of campus by fall 2016. There were three students deaths in the 2014-2015 school year. The first on campus murder occurred in 2015 with the death of Karlie Hall.

In World News: In 2005, Spongebob and Youtube became sensations. Taylor Swift became a household name in the middle of the 2000’s--now you cannot shake her off. The Xbox 360 dropped in 2005 and the gaming world was never the same. Apple took a major bite into the technology realm when the iPhone grabbed all of our attention in 2007.

America was ravaged by severe weather when Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy made landfall. Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005. Sandy destroyed the New Jersey

coastline in 2012. Both New Orleans and New Jersey are still recovering from the damaging weather.

The Jerry Sandusky scandal came to light at Penn State University in 2011, opening up the media floodgate in Happy Valley. Penn State received sanctions that have since been lifted. Tiger Woods topped the golf game, but the biggest story took place in his bedroom--when a domestic scandal was uncovered, sending the legendary golfer into a downward spiral. Michael Phelps brought home a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

I started college at Millersville in the fall of 2011. I was going back to college at the age of 22, the age when most people are graduating. It was a bit intimidating but I had figured out what my passion was in life and wanted to strive for it. Which led to my first action of my college career, which was to be a part of the university newspaper, The Snapper. I had seen on the website that the Snapper was looking for a news editor position, and I jumped at it. I met with Michael Blackson, editor-in-chief, the next week, and then associate news editor, Laura Maginley, and then I was voted in at the next Snapper meeting as the new news editor. Such a proud moment in my life, what an honor to be a part of this organization.

Laura and I made a great news team.

We fit perfectly and worked extremely well together, quite the duo. Also during this time, our then photography editor, David Lu, taught me the basics of photography and how to use the expensive camera equipment to take my own photos when I was covering an event. I was already learning so many new skills that I couldn’t learn anywhere else, things I couldn’t learn in a classroom. These skills I acquired by being hands on, going out there, and doing them.

I went on to be the news editor of the Snapper for three years and associate news editor for one semester, I wrote and edited a countless number of articles, took many pictures and even represented the Snapper as Miss Snapper in the Miss Millersville competition in 2012. The Snapper was my

Being the news editor came with a high level of responsibility, and I did make mistakes. For those of you who might not remember, one semester I chose to run an article on the front page of the newspaper that the administration did not agree with

Danielle Black and we felt the heat for it, and the Snapper staff backed me in my decision. I was reprimanded by the administration, asked to print an apology/retraction and I did so, but I had the entire Snapper and my adviser with me every step of the way. They supported me even when I faltered, they were my backbone, and not many people can say that of their organization.

I got to experience what it was like to feel accomplished, seeing my name in the

newspaper every week. There is no feeling in the world like when you have an amazing front cover, top of the fold news story which you wrote. I got to feel that being a part of the Snapper. Interviewing important people, and being the first reporter on the scene of an explosion on campus and be the first to break the story! How many people can say they got to do that at their university? Well I did, and I owe it all to my beloved Snapper.

I also learned real life lessons being a part of the Snapper. What it means to be a part of something truly great. This is because of the family that I made while being a part of the Snapper. Those bonds we created are going to last a lifetime, and will forever be with me. All the fun we had traveling and going to the National College Media Conventions, and our long, late Tuesday nights putting the newspaper together for print deadline. Those are memories that I will have with me for my entire life, memories I cherish. The Snapper has affected me in ways I never thought possible. Not only am I a better writer, editor, and communicator because of the Snapper, but I am also a better person all around. The Snapper has helped mold me into the person I am today, I am so grateful to have been a part of such an amazing organization. Kickstarting a career Dan Good ‘06 My time with the Snapper reflects the most exhilarating point in my journalism career.

The focus wasn’t on page views or video start totals or ROI or social reach then -- we were motivated by the story, the truth, the craft.

We spent some long nights at the SMC, bonding over our idiosyncrasies, sorting through shredded garbage (OK, the garbage was my thing). I felt so alive challenging the university’s power structure and throwing pebbles, sometimes leaving a dent.

Occasionally those pebbles got thrown back. While with the Snapper, I learned the power and weight of words, a lesson I’ve carried throughout my career.

Journalism, in its truest form, seeks to shine light on the darkness and enlighten people. I’m so proud of what the Snapper accomplished during my time at

Feeling old and sentimental Seth Lennon ‘06 So, writing this piece is going to make me feel really old. When I first walked into the Snapper office as a wide-eyed clueless freshman in September 2003, I had no idea what I was getting into.

I had written here and there on the side during High School but never for a school paper. Within weeks, I was covering the football beat and spending increasingly long hours in the office and becoming well acquainted with Sugar Bowl pizza, the AP Style

The hours grew later, the stress went through the roof but the memories that were made in the office still linger to this day.

Whether it is staff trips to conferences, finding a way to fall backwards in my chair and almost concuss myself or do a Breaking Bad-esque drop at 4 AM of the DVD containing that issue, some of my best times at Millersville were at The Snapper.

THE SNAPPER 2006-PRESENT

A decade later, I still think about the Snapper. I wish I could freeze that moment, bottle that energy, and walk around in it every once and again, but all I can do is carry it in my memories, thinking back to the weekly drudgery, friendships, Sugar Bowl gyros, and the unjaundiced view of what lay ahead.

Those memories make me smile. I met some of my best friends through the Snapper, and I encountered other people who still mean the world to me, even though we don’t regularly talk anymore.

I’m honored to have been a part of the Snapper’s history, and I look forward to celebrating its future successes.

Katie’s korner Katie Pryor ‘14 It doesn’t seem that long ago since I was writing my Farewell Article for the Snapper. And now that I’m beyond my senior year melodramatic slump I can finally talk about my time with the Snapper in a more coherent way.

Coming into college, I knew I wanted to do some type of writing, I just didn’t know what kind for a long time. I’ve been writing short stories since I was in elementary school and eventually graduated to middle school versions of penny dreadfuls. I even went through a brief phase in high school where I wanted to drop out and become a playwright (thanks Mom and Dad for talking me out of that).

It wasn’t until one faithful

day my freshman year where I was wondering around the SMC and came across the Snapper office where I figured out what I wanted to do. I had always been restless and eccentric and had been chastised throughout high school for it, but they were some of the first people at Millersville who didn’t mind my quirks and were just happy that I could almost always found something to write about, despite being a freshman adjusting to college.

Some of the editors even told me, “You should consider becoming an editor someday.”

Remembering the hard times

of it was important in the grand scheme of our work, but our weekly repartee was just part of The Snapper experience.

We butted heads. Yet somehow we understood each other.

He was the first to teach me publication layout, which I still use professionally. He offered advice when I took my first photography class that spring. Despite the fighting and frustration, I looked up to Mike, yet never told him.

He pushed us to do the best paper possible, but he never forgot to have fun. My favorite memory of him was the late night “Snapper toss” where we took turns chucking stacks of old papers as far as we could. He took it so seriously. I found his strength impressive for someone so scrawny.

One night, we sat perched on the tank-like metal desks that filled the office. Editor selection for the upcoming year was in a few weeks, and he asked me what position I planned to run for. I don’t think I was certain but mentioned that someday I wanted to be editor-in-chief. He turned to me with a serious look in his eyes and said, “ You would make a great editor-in-chief.” Surprisingly, that is one of the conversations that stuck with me most over the years.

While I never became editorin-chief, I went on to hold other roles on staff the next three years including webmaster, managing editor, business manager and photo editor, the final two both during my senior year, while an

RA and sorority member.

As the year ended, Mike took a photography job at The Courier in Houma, Louisiana, and moved to Thibodaux in September. We said our non-emotional goodbyes at the end-of-the-year Snapper dinner. That was the last time I talked to him.

I remember the call clearly; it would not be the last I received delivering bad news on my Lenhardt dorm phone. As I packed for winter break, waiting for my dad to pick me up after finals, a Snapper member called and delivered the news.

Mike was dead, murdered in his apartment by a man with a baseball bat on Friday, December 13, 2002. I was stunned. It made no sense. He would never hurt anyone. Yet he was taken in such a brutal way, by a man who only gave the reason that “he wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone.”

I was shaken by Mike’s death. It was the first of a friend my age, and I regretted not keeping in touch or telling him how much I looked up to him.

I attended his memorial service with Snapper members and listened as Intelligencer and Courier staff spoke of his talent and impact. His Louisiana staff worked with him a few short months, but it was evident by their insistence on travelling to Lancaster for the service that he impacted them too.

The transition from print to the World Wide Web TheSnapper.com is The Snapper’s website. It was created in 2000. “We wanted to keep up with modern technology and current journalism methods. We didn’t want to become a fossil on campus, so the staff created the website to keep up with the times,” former Snapper advisor Gene Ellis said.

Originally, the webmaster position did not have clearly defined responsibilities. Then the position grew and adapted as the website did. “The editors uploaded their articles to the site individually; there wasn’t an editor specifically for the site until a while later,” Ellis said.

The position of webmaster was added to the masthead to ensure The Snapper would adapt with the times. The first webmaster was Cory Clayton. He registered TheSnapper.com. Clayton went on to be the Director of Social Media for the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He won awards in that position.

Under his management, WWE became

the No. 2 sports brand on Facebook, behind only the NBA, and is one of the Top 50 most-followed brands on Facebook overall. More than 20 WWE Superstars’ Facebook pages rank in the Top 100 mostfollowed athletes. WWE is also one of less than 10 brands to have a perfect “99” Klout influence score. “WWE Raw” was one of the Top 5 most social TV series of 2012 and 2013, as ranked by Trendrr and SocialGuide. WWE was also named in the Top 20 of Headstream’s SocialBrands100 rankings and ranks in the Dachis Group/Sprinklr’s World’s Top 5 Brands in Social Media.

Cory Clayton currently manages content and maintenance for more than 300 social media channels for the WWE Universe on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, TOUT, Pheed and YouTube--with more than 480 million combined fans and followers. Clayton has led the growth of WWE’s social footprint with a successful combination of aggressive fan acquisition strategies and quality

online content. His campaign management skills and creative social strategies have led WWE to be a winner, finalist or honoree for more than 50 major social media awards during his tenure, including CableFAX’s “Social Media Dream Team” award and the Cynopsis Sports Media Award for Overall Social Media Excellence in 2015.

Following Clayton, Brian Nolan became the webmaster. Next was Matt Snyder. Joe Moore followed Snyder. After them, DJ Ramsay became the webmaster.

The current and most recent webmaster is Maria Rovito. “Originally when I was the webmaster I was just posting all the articles on the website,” Rovito said. During Rovito’s second semester as the webmas-

ter, she started to change the design of the website. Rovito made aesthetic changes to the website. Before, the website was red, Rovito designed the website with Millersville’s colors in mind. Rovito also made TheSnapper.com look more like a newspaper design wise.

At the 2013 College Media Convention, thesnapper.com ranked 8th in the nation for best of show in the web design category at New Orleans, LA. It was the first national award for the website. The award was won for design, ease of use and content.

“I hope when I graduate we have people who are even more excited about going online and website design,” Rovito said.

Staying alive! Staying alive!

The 1977 song, “Staying Alive” by the Bee Gees, comes to mind when thinking of Dr. Gene Ellis’s reign as Snapper advisor from the early 1990’s to 2015.

Ellis took over for Jamie Burns in 1994, after Burns decided to complete her doctorate.

It was supposed to be a two-year deal for Ellis. He was placed in as advisor and remained in the position for over ten years because The Snapper continued to vote him in. The rest is history, as they say.

His fondest memories are seeing his students succeed; he remembers The Snapper affectionately.

“I miss the Snapper. I really do. It is part of your life. It was a really good experience. I enjoyed it. I got to know everyone. You got close. You get to know people really well and you wonder, ‘why do I put up with these people.’

A lot of the editors and I are still friends,” Ellis said, while reminiscing about his late Tuesday and Thursday nights at The Snapper.
