Women’s Mentorship and Leadership Academy strives for female empowerment

The Women’s Mentorship and Leadership Academy help women build bonds of sisterhood and encourage female empowerment.

The Women’s Mentorship and Leadership Academy or WMLA, is a program here at Skyline College that supports, motivates, teaches, and gives dozens of women a place to belong.

The academy’s goal is to impart knowledge on how to reach goals, whether they be educational, career, personal, or financial.

Danielle Powell, the program coordinator, is a dedicated woman who wants to help in every single way. She has and will always put all of her effort into the academy.

“This is my heart, this program,” said Powell.

Her hope is that the women develop healthy interpersonal

and intercultural communication skills. As a result of this, her students are constantly learning new things, due to the introduction of fresh concepts each semester, to ensure that the program doesn’t get repetitive.

The program focuses on two types of growth, personal and professional. Personal goals are the focus in the fall and professional goals during the spring. Students in community college often stay for different amounts of time each semester, so WMLA puts in a lot of effort to help each person learn specific skills.

“The program helped me find myself, and learning who I was helped me break out of my shell,” said Bianca Morales, a student in the academy.

“I learned what resources are on campus and how they can help me,” said Olivia Yancey,

another student in the Academy.

This past summer, students from WMLA and other schools went on a trip to South Africa to learn about the culture, for a very busy two-and-a-halfweeks. They raised money by holding fundraisers and applying to scholarships. This trip was considered a course, so it wasn’t all fun and games.

Not only did the students get to see historical places but they also participated in projects with children and adults throughout the trip. They visited children at hospitals, read to children, and went on a safari in Cape Town.

Sometimes students are too shy, and the beauty of WMLA is that they bring the resources to you.

Guest speakers motivate and help students get acquainted with what Skyline has to offer.

do a project with the students.

They wore clothing that was representative of their culture and then they were photographed. For the grand end-of-the-semester celebration, to the students’ surprise, the academy had all of the photos blown up. It became an exhibition called, “I AM HER”.

The students were shocked to see themselves in this light.

The academy often teams up with various programs here at Skyline, such as Calworks and the learning center. The learning center has held workshops that help participants with targeted personal statements for CSU and UC applications.

Recently, WMLA hosted a free event for women who were in transitional homes, here at Skyline. Recipients were able to go to a motivational workshop, have a spa day courtesy of the cosmetology department and

were treated to lunch. It was an enlightening experience for the students who volunteered and for the women. Students and teachers who were part of this event were able to help change someone’s life for the better through the service of others and the women were shown that they are not alone.

The academy is focused, flexible and dedicated wholly on the students. Participants are also able to give feedback to the coordinator and heads to help improve the program.

Women’s Mentorship and Leadership Academy will have their first meeting on Wednesday, September 20th.

Meetings are held every Wednesday in Building four, room 4-274 from 3:15-5:30 p.m.

On September 20th, the cosmetology club is hosting a fundraiser dedicated to raising money for Houston beauty businesses affected by Hurricane Harvey. Students on campus may wonder how they would be able to aid the civilians.

For a $20 admission fee, on Wednesday, September 20th students are offered a variety of services from Skyline estheticians, stylists, and manicurists. Services include mini blowouts, facials, and more.

The donations received from the event will be going to the Professional Beauty Association, also known as PBA. The organization will then use the money accumulated to support beauty related businesses within the impacted areas to help them rebuild.

“They need help,” said Alyssa Sirianni, Skyline’s Cosmetology Club President. “It’s a way for us to do what we can.”

At the event, the Cosmetology Club will also be accepting necessities such as toothbrushes,

blankets, and clothing, with an emphasis on the need for feminine products.

“They really hope that they can bring together a campus community for the greater good,” said Robyn Ledesma, Cosmetology Program assistant, as she spoke of her students.

can divert from the disaster at hand. Of course supplies are still needed, but too much can sometimes be a problem.

“I can’t tell you how many times I have been in disaster situations where I’ve seen, literally, just warehouses filled with stuff that people give, just

sitting there,” Said Britt Lake, Chief Program Officer of Global Giving in a recent interview with the New York Times.

Global Giving is a well regarded organization that focuses on collaborating with local organizations at the area of impact and will continue their efforts long after the disaster. According to their website, local organizations help communities directly and more efficiently, although they do direct money to larger entities in the earlier days of a response.

As for other organizations, no one was able to be interviewed in the wake of the disasters.

This was due to the vast need for resources and people on staff already occupied with relief efforts, according to a phone representative from World Vision.

World Vision differs from other organizations by providing help in the long term along with immediate assistance, according to its website. They assist survivors through relief, recovery, and rebuilding for a month after the disaster.

There are also various organizations that specialize in

certain areas if there is something specific one would like to donate to. Some examples are Unicef, who places a focus on school age children, The American University of Antigua, who focuses on Barbuda, Best Friends Animal Society, who focuses on animals, and Oxfam America, who is preparing for Hurricane Jose as it works on Irma, according to the New York Times.

Skyline keeps dreams alive

On September 5th, President Trump announced an executive order to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), putting the fate of 800,000 young undocumented adults into uncertainty. In Skyline College, some of our fellow students were deeply affected by this decision.

President of Skyline College Dr. Regina Stanback Stroud spoke out recently regarding the issue and she pledged to support Dreamers to continue their education in this campus through mass email. “The mission of Skyline College is to empower and transform a global community of learners. We can and do realize that mission when we stand up to protect our democratic society and ensure safe, equitable spaces for expression and learning.”

She is right. These young students deserve a chance for education and opportunity like the rest of us too. They didn’t choose to leave their homeland voluntarily and this has been home for them since they can ever remember.

They signed up for the DACA programs because they were trying to legalize their statuses as aliens but this order is putting all their

hard works to being a real citizen on jeopardy.

When speaking on the executive order, attorney general Jeff Sessions had this to say regarding the immigration laws. “Enforcing the law saves lives, protects communities and taxpayers, and prevents human suffering. Failure to enforce the laws in the past has put our nation at risk of crime, violence and even terrorism.”

No, this is not about the safety of a country; this is pure racism and prejudice. We have heard it multiple times that illegal immigration was the cause of terrorism in this country but if we look back at the headlines for the past decade, from the Charleston church shooting to the recent Charlottesville protest, who really are the victims of these cases? Shouldn’t the government be focusing on fighting these homegrown terrorists whom seemed to be more terrifying and yet were being overlooked time and time again.

On top of that, abolishing the DACA program could cost the nation more than we can imagine.

Progress, the loss of all DACA workers would reduce U.S. gross domestic product by $433 billion over the next 10 years.

These dreamers are not a threat to the country and it is important that we realize that too in our communities. They shouldn’t be denied the access to a better future based on where they came from and disregard the hard work and labor they had contributed to this nation.

It is times like this that these dreamers need to feel reassurance than ever. Skyline College is showing that we are not going to abandon the people in our community and follow an order blindly without looking at the bigger picture. These Dreamers are not strangers, they are our classmates, our neighbors, our friends, our family and they live among us and contribute to our daily lives like no other. We should all speak up and support them as they would to our community.

As President Stroud said, “We move forward together because we know that together there are no limits to what we can achieve.”

With the recent release of Samsung’s flagship phone and the trio of new iPhones set to release, consumers are opening up their checkbooks to get the most powerful smartphone yet. Then we cycle back to our checkbooks next year and do it again.

Smartphones are some of the greatest bits of technology we have today. No longer just a text and call device, we use smartphones to work, create, design, and share on a great scale. However, it is still not worth the $1,000 price tag.

Consumers are infatuated with the latest products. The problem is that smartphone companies release phones yearly with cosmetic changes along with slight hardware improvements.

An updated chip along with a better screen is usually enough for Apple to release a new iPhone.

However, this year’s iPhones will contain the new A11 Bionic chip, which is expected to perform 25 percent better than the previous.

The previous phone release by apple was the iPhone 7 plus which debuted at $769.

And we all know how Samsung’s flagship phone did last year. The Galaxy Note 7 was a beautiful phone with a hidden timer for detonation. That phone was out for about two weeks before being recalled.

It debuted in the market at $849.

This year’s version of the phone is a 20 percent markup without the chance of combustion (hopefully).

Smartphones are like pocket devices that allow us to access to digital projects for work and curation, but they are simplified tools. They allow files and projects to be accessible mobile but you will not get all the capabilities as the computer.

You would be better off keeping last year’s iPhone, which you probably have not paid off yet, and buying a new computer.

Alternatively, you could wait for next year’s smartphone, which would likely be touted as the most powerful yet again.

An ef fective way to spark change for minorities

America is divided now more than ever. With Presidents Trump’s executive decision to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), immigrants, especially Latino communities feel that they are under attack by their own government. It is important to understand that long before the executive decision, people of color and low income have been displeased with their government’s effort to improve their condition of their communities.

This country has not been shied away with her history of racism

and discrimination towards people of color. Minorities in the U.S. have always felt oppressed by their government and by those in power. These communities are not only ignored, but they also had to endure neglect by their politicians and government officials.

Minorities have always sought change and dreamt of the idea of equality.

Change is inevitable and those who want it must understand that it is a slow process that can’t be forced. Therefore violence does not accomplish anything. Riots that are sparked by a positive message,

are still riots. Attacking a man for believing in the wrong message, is still assault and is not justifiable in any way. The expression that hate can’t be fought with hate should always be taken into consideration.

Many will say taking to the streets and protesting has an enormous impact on conveying a message quickly. I am not discrediting protesting nor am I saying it has no impact. Protesting is protected by the first amendment and is very effective. In addition to protesting, another effective way to impose change in our communities is by representing your community in the best way possible.

For example, if you have the resources to pursue higher education, then you should take full advantage of it.

An effective way to spark change is to be the change. Lead by example. Take initiative to be more than a stereotype or statistic. According to Pew Research, college enrollment among Hispanics ages 18 to 24 had tripled since 1996. Strive for higher education and embrace your race, culture and religion.

Motivate our Hispanic community to become doctors, engineers, politicians, lawyers and teachers.

It is important to represent your

community as best as you can. And once you reach that influential and high statute job, persuade others in your community to follow in your footsteps.

Complaining about those in power accomplished nothing.

However becoming the person in power does. In a way, money makes the world go round. Those with money and high stature will have the better resources to influence change in their community. Depending on others that do not come from the same community is useless. Take initiative and become the change that you seek.

Don’t Blame it on Becky We tend to judge people based on what language they speak and who they may or may not pray to based on their looks, and now, some go so far as to assume what someone’s individual political opinions are based on appearance.

This is dangerous territory we’re in here, folks.

It might be hard to cope with the realities on either political side, but placing blame on a person for something that is the product of a greater snowball effect is not the solution we may be looking for either. Don’t reduce people to a stereotype or a statistic. Just because Nazis are commonplace now, does not mean that all white people are sinister, and voted for Trump, just the same as not all minorities are criminals, and expert wall-scalers, and imbeciles, and non-native English speakers.

Especially now, political arguments have pushed the opposite sides to extremes and tensions are brewing. Scientists predict that we are on the verge of a nuclear war, but what about here, at home? It is ironic that we, as a nation care so much about what other countries are doing, and yet neglect our own. Some have previously compared the U.S. to a bad college roommate, breaking their housemate’s belongings with little consequence or repercussion, breaking, entering, looting, and then, finally leaving.

But we can’t continue like this, if we want this “great nation” to survive. This is not the time to be petty. Sure, it looks great on t-shirts but in real life, we have to approach this issue gracefully.

If America is to devolve into a nation of fisticuffs, then what is the point of squabbling over health care, gun ownership and civil liberties if all this aggression leads to another civil war in the end because we can’t all get along?

There are parallels in fictional worlds, that are applicable, such as in Game of Thrones, where regents fighting over who will rule, makes no sense if they are obliterated by other forces.

Practice patience, and then maybe we can get somewhere. And i’m not encouraging a kumbaya circle either. America was built on several different parties, in the acknowledgement that its’ citizens are expected to have varying views and beliefs. We should be able to co-exist, at least civilly and possess the skill of mediation strictly for the purpose of reaching a common goal, for the good of all.

Don’t judge people for liking Coldplay. Or being progressive and Conservative at the same time.

For praying, or not praying. For kneeling, or standing, or bowing.

For speaking English, or Spanish, or Pig Latin, or Vulcan. It’s America. It’s universally great.

Picture this: you are getting out of the class, feeling hungry and tired and you walk all the way from building four to building six just to get to the cafeteria and realize the long line that is almost reaching the door. Will you still wait in line for lunch or opt out for a vending machine?

As the school continues to expand with students enrolling semester after semester, so are the lines at the cafeteria during lunchtime. Many of the students get out from their classes around the same time for lunch and it is inevitable for traffic to happen, whether having to wait to order or even making a payment. On top of that, the food at Skyline College is not exactly the healthiest option

students could enjoy.

One way that might help to ease the traffic at the cafeteria is having another vendor. As Natalie Robehmed, economy analyst from Forbes, pointed out, competition is good for business because it shakes off complacency and both vendors would improve on their products to compete for customers, in this case, the food for students.

As the student population grows on campus, there is certainly more rooms for other vendor to join in the business. Granted, most students are on a meal budget but it does not mean they have to settle for less simply because there are no other options.

Another solution to this would be having food trucks coming onto our school campus around lunch hours. This would definitely help

diverting students’ traffic out from the cafeteria. The food trucks were brought to the school in the past and the response for them were positive overall.

Food trucks are becoming more an more popular as the years go by. We’ve seen hot dog stands and taco trucks, but since then, the food truck industry has just gotten bigger. It is not always necessary to have food trucks for special events. Food trucks on school campuses can be refreshing and have a lot of potential to be successful.

“American food is nice but not everyone is into American food,” said Jose Paolo, a 17-yearold Skyline student when asked about the food from the cafeteria.

“Variation would be good for everyone.”

The festival was also a platform for presidential opposition because we all know there’s no escaping politics. Politics is everywhere, which is why it wasn’t surprising that YG West Coast background and avid activism to start off his performance.

What the Health?

How much do we really know about the food we consume on the daily?

There is a lot of buzz about celebrities, social media artists, even friends and suddenly dropping their omnivorous eating lifestyle for a vegan diet, or even less specific: going plant based.

Why are people all of a sudden transitioning from having a meat eating diet, to being completely plant based?

The answer lies within the new documentary called “What the Health.”

Directors Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn shed a high rising spotlight on health that explains the effects of the meat and pharmaceutical industries have in society that not only may change the lifestyle of others, but even your own. The documentary gives viewers a different perspective towards the negative effects of economic persuasion towards the health industry, as well as positive effects of becoming plant based.

In the documentary, Andersen’s journey starts off by discovering aspects of how the American diet that contains meat, dairy, eggs, and other animal products have an unhealthy, and underlying factors that leads towards heart disease, diabetes, and cholesterol, to name a few. Meeting with

San Francisco has never been short of tasty and savory pizzas, but nothing comes close to those handcrafted ones found in Beretta, a pizzeria which opened its business since 2008.

Located in Mission District neighborhood at Valencia and 23rd St, Beretta pride itself as the pioneer of the quirky fine dining restaurants that had since been populated in the area. With its dimmed lighting, the restaurant is a perfect sport for dates or even a casual hangouts with friends. Upon entering the restaurant, visitors are greeted with a big full bar and black walls decorated with classy decors that are very sexy and evocative.

One of the fans’ favorite appetizers from Beretta is the walnut bread. The dish comes in three pieces and is served alongside burrata cheese and mushroom-truffle honey. The bread was delicious with different textures and flavors which blended nicely when you take that first bite.

For the main dish, I went with the classic margherita pizza and a squid ink with calamari risotto. The thinned-crust pizza itself was very crispy and the tomato sauce was just enough

to balance with the right amount of dough. On top of that, the herbs in the sauce made the slice even more savoring. The calamari risotto was a good add on because it was very rich and the squid ink mixed in so well it just made you craved for more.

Try not to stuff yourself too full to save some rooms for dessert. I chose bonet because I have a soft spot for chocolate and it was a chocolate gelato but with its own twist with the additional of amaretti and caramel.

The portion of the dessert is rather big so I’d recommend to share it with your company.

Beretta is definitely a go-to if you ever wanted to try on handcrafted pizza without leaving the city. The price range might be higher than your usual pizzeria but it is certainly worth the buck.

If anyone in society tries to debunk the ways of what these various industries are doing, it will cause an alarm to the systems that are making the trillions of dollars who contribute towards their success.

Anderson, among several other doctors in the story discuss aspects of how having a vegan lifestyle and diet can actually reverse the causes of diseases relevant to cardiovascular disease, heart disease, diabetes, etc.

“Doctors are not taught about the power of food in medical school.” Dr. Michelle McMacken said. “Changes in diet are the most powerful thing we can do to determine destiny-- trumping genetics.”

Several doctors and athletes who have transitioned to a vegan lifestyle have confessed in the film to not only an improvement to their physical health, but to their mental and psychological health as well.

By being able to break down “What the Health”, viewers obtain new information that is essentially beneficial to them. Viewers are given the health perspective of the meat industry, how one can save themselves towards reducing issues like cardiovascular disease, heart disease, cholesterol, etc., and take initiative towards awareness.

Is the NFL too Soft?

Kevin Durant stomps on his haters

Kevin Durant's latest Nike shoe, the KD 10 Finals edition, is a response to the hate and criticism he’s faced for leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Durant joined the Warriors after their loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in their second straight appearance to the NBA Finals. Durant was the missing piece of the puzzle and in the 2017 season with Golden State Warriors, lead them to the NBA Finals and won the Finals MVP. Durant had a very successful career with his previous team the Oklahoma City Thunder under his five year contract with them.

Although his statistics were incredible and won him a Most Valuable Player award in 2014, he faced a lot of frustration in Oklahoma City and never won a championship.

The 2016 season, was Durant's final season with the Thunder. They ended their season blowing a 3-1 lead to the Golden State Warriors in the conference finals.

Mauricio Flores, a Business Major, chose the

Creative Commons archery for it peaked his interest and he wanted to learn a new skill, which he eventually hopes becomes a hobby.

“I take a physical education class every semester,” Fosberg said.

“They help maintain a balance within my academic courses.”

Crystal Patten a Kinesiology major at skyline college gave an insight on her experience with the archery class.

“Honestly? I just wanted to be Robin Hood,” Patten

said.

Will Tagade, an accounting major at skyline college explained his purpose of taking the archery class.

“Archery takes one back to our primal selves,” Tagade says. “I feel, if it ever came down to it, we would be able to survive” Tagade is a returning archery student.

Doriana Kaestner took archery for a greater experience.

“I chose archery because I wanted to break gender norms connected to it,” Kaestner said.

Its Fall, and it's time again for the American tradition of football to kick off. Through the excitement, the intensity, and the love of the game I have begun to see the impact of how much the sport has changed over the years.

Over the past decade the NFL has implemented new rules designed to protect their players. They have added new a concussion protocol to ensure that their players' mental state is protected when they grow older.They also added numerous penalties and fines for certain hits.

These unnecessary hits are classified as hitting a “defenseless receiver”, a late hit on the quarterback, and now for slamming down a player to the ground when their forward progress is stopped.

I am all for sportsmanship. I do not believe in shenanigans after the whistle has been blown or slamming somebody down when they are out of bounds. However when

the ball is in play, anything should go.

When the concept of this sport was conceived it was meant to be a warrior sport.

Even when I played, I knew the risk I was taking with my body when I stepped on that field. I knew the the real possibilities of life-altering injuries and the long-term effects to my mind and body.

I see no reason why we should change this physical sport into something softer, just because the league is afraid to see their players get hurt. For example, back in 2008 the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots, Tom Brady was handed a season ending injury because he took a blow from below his knees. That following year, the league instituted a new rule about below-the-knee hits.

Quite frankly with all of these constant changes throughout the years, the passion, excitement, and love I had for this game come up short each time.

Archery has been taught at Skyline College for the past 25 years and remains a popular physical education credit.

Archery is a .5 to 2-unit class here at Skyline College. It is UC and CSU transferable, and is also fulfills the fitness requirement towards an Associate’s degree. As far as grading goes, the course can be taken as a Letter Grade or Pass/No Pass, which allows those who are concerned, the choice to not let it affect their collective GPA, and learn a skill without sacrificing the efforts in put into academic courses.

Jan Fosberg Archery has taught Archery at Skyline College for the past 25 plus years. Fosberg holds a Master’s degree in Kinesiology and coaches three sports at Skyline College. Skyline is the only campus in the San Mateo Community College District that offers archery to its students as physical education credit.

Archery, an Olympic sport, is a symbol of strength and skill. Professional archers, undergo intense training to which comparable of other sports.

The sport requires focus,

supposed to be loyal to an organization that isn’t loyal to you after all you’ve done for them? Thunder fans are very sour on his decision and can’t respect him as a human, as shown by the burning of his jerseys and name calling.

As Warriors fan, I can say that if Stephen Curry were to join a rival team such as the Thunder or the Cavaliers, I’d respect his decision and thank him for all he’s done for our home team. I do not think that a player, making a smart decision for himself is selfish. People forget that the NBA is a business and people want to win championships. Kevin Durant was not going to win a championship in Oklahoma City. There was already an existing “Super Team”, in Oklahoma City with Durant, Harden and Westbrook and they still couldn’t defeat Lebron James' Miami Heat, in the 2012 Finals. If you've followed Durant the last 2 seasons in Oklahoma City then you saw the frustration in his eyes how unhappy he was there.

The appeal to archery is the confidence and mindset students can obtain.

“Many students say it helps them relax in other classes” Fosberg said. “It makes students believe in themselves and their ability to succeed.”

Archery is a mental space, in which one can apply the idea that practice makes perfect. When student succeed in achieving their goals on the field, academia driven goals seem more attainable.

“Archery is a connection between mind and body, though we are not out there sweating, we are out there using our breath, using our muscles, to fire the arrow,” Fosberg said. “There is focus that gives physical benefit, even though it is not a very physical class.”

The intention behind physical education is to provide individuals with a lifelong wellness practice.

Archery has the potential to become a lasting commitment that can be continued throughout our lives.

Lavar Ball is making headlines after revealing his youngest son's first signature sneaker, however; due to National College Athletic Association regulations it might jeopardize his basketball scholarship.

Lamelo Ball just unveiled his signature shoe called the "Melo Ball 1", making him the first high

school basketball player to have his own signature shoe.

At 16 years old, Ball already has verbally committed to UCLA. However, due to the launch of his new sneakers, Lamelo’s scholarship eligibility may be jeopardized due to the NCAA regulations.

The NCAA has a strict rule preventing their student athletes from profiting

or benefiting from their athletic reputation and abilities. According to the the NCAA rule book, students are forbidden from compensation for participating in athletics, benefits from an agent or prospective agent.

“The NCAA ain’t going to tell me shit",” Lavar Ball, father of Lamelo said.

“Because they’re not my boss”.

Lavar is obviously not shy on telling the media upfront how he feels. He does feel that making a direct attack toward the NCAA policy is far due to their hypocrisy. For many years now the NCAA has been profiting from their student athletes, especially men's basketball and football. According to USA today The NCAA had total revenue of nearly $1 billion

Lamelo is most popular for scoring 92 points in a high school game at Chino Hills.

By Lavar giving Lamelo a shoe deal at the age of 16, he is telling the NCAA that his son will not be taken advantage of. This may be a stepping stone for student athletes all across the country. Lavar and Lamelo Ball have put an immense amount of pressure on the NCAA. The NCAA now has two choices in this scenario. The first being to label Lamelo ineligible and lose out on

professional level, people cannot judge him for taking advantage of his privileged life. Many will argue that Lavar is taking advantage of Lamelo.

However people cannot discredit Lavar as a father figure. Lavar at the end of the day is just trying to set up his kids for success.

Whether you agree with his parenting or not, Lavar has been nothing but an excellent father while making an honest living in the process.

Should student athletes be paid?

As school kicks off yet another year, controversy still surrounds the possible financial compensation of student athletes.

The times have evolved with the change in culture.

The rise of the internet and other options for cable

television have allowed college events to be aired and viewed anywhere all over the globe.

According to the total revenue of the National College Athletic Association, 81 percent of their profits come from television and marketing deals. This really makes

a person rethink how the NCAA actually operates in the entertainment industry.

Players are providing the service of entertainment that allows this industry to exist, which should entitle them to compensation based on the NCAA revenue.

The top 20 football programs made $925 million

in gross revenue. On top of that, they make money off of players by selling jerseys with their numbers without giving them a single cent.

Most schools where these players stay get 10 percent of the royalties.

Some people will argue that they are being paid with their education, but really in all honesty they can be paid much more.

These students do not have the spare money to feed themselves, yet they sometimes put 40 to 60 hours a week in their respective sport without any thought of compensation.

Special players bring notoriety to their schools.

Johnny Manziel who

plays for Texas A&M, and Lorenzo Ball who plays for UCLA became

household names and elevated media coverage for their institutions.

March Madness itself generated about a billion

dollars last year in ticket sales, media rights, corporate sponsorship, and television ads. In the tournament there is some compensation to teams based on how far they go.

I believe this should be the same across all sports, especially with companies lining up to be the official brands of the NCAA. The athletes are the lifeline to sports entertainment, yet the NCAA say that they are not allowed to have their cut of this enormous pie. It's about time players get paid operationally to what profits they generate.
