Campus construction creates parking dilemma - should we pay?

As part of an ongoing construction project on campus, parking spots were blocked off from the middle of 1959 until this story printed. When construction ended, the University decided that it would not build any new lots as Dr. Gilmour, the President at the time, said “we are not going to make this a cement campus.” He added, “Many students thing that it is the obligation of the university to subsidize their transportation by providing them with parking space... ...I am sure if you charged them for it, most students would park half a mile away and walk from there!” [originally published in The Silhouette as Space Even Scarcer For Student Vehicles]

Another week, another success.

Seven months ago, that success was anything but certain.

After controversy and close scrutiny fell on the McMaster Redsuits for a sexist and degrading songbook connected to the organization, Welcome Week has come and gone with little issue for the engineering reps. But that’s just fine with Shane Zuchowski, one of the Redsuit planners alongside Jose Mercado, who already had their hands full with the ups and downs of the week.

Even after an improbable train of setbacks that includes mixed-up bookings, rain, fire alarms, and losing two buses for faculty night due to accident, Zuchowski has had a good attitude about it all.

“Someone should have just told me to wear spandex - the chafe is real,” he said, laughing.

However, while the shift away from the old culture has been largely successful, other issues were bound to come to the forefront. One such complaint was submitted for the reps and students cheering “fuck yeah”.

“I will fully take responsibility for that issue,” Zuchowski said. “Since the start of Welcome Week, what we’ve focused on mainly were the things specifically outlined in the investigation, which were things like glorifying cheers about alcohol and oversexualization.”

“We realized our mistake… we got rid of it,” he said. “We wanted to apologize because we really didn’t mean anything of it.”

He continued, “understandably, everybody has a different level of sensitivity to things like that, especially curse words, but it slipped my mind [to discontinue it].”

When asked how he felt the Redsuits were able to adjust this year, Student Development Manager and member of the Welcome Week Advisory Com-

mittee Jeremy Sandor commented that he was “incredibly happy with how the week went.”

“The two planners, Shane and Jose, were tireless through the summer in terms of working with staff from the Faculty of Engineering, the Student Success Centre, and the McMaster Students Union [in order] to make sure that the spirit and energy that the faculty is known for during Welcome Week was preserved,” Sandor said.

Although inclusiveness seems to have had a greater focus this year, Julia Clemens, Welcome Week Faculty Coordinator, maintains that the philosophy has remained the same.

She said, “maybe there’s a new perspective where a cheer that you think is harmless... and 95 per cent of students would have been ok with it - we’re maybe a little more conscious of the five per cent that is made uncomfortable by it.”

When looking at the lack of controversy during Welcome Week relative to the firestorm seven months ago, it’s clear that progress has been made in the new year.

Celebrating McMaster’s 125th anniversary through sculpture

Poised on a bench outside of University Hall, a bronze statue of William McMaster peers at passing students with a contemplative gaze. He’s been sitting there since Sept. 3 thanks to the McMaster Alumni Association, who donated the sculpture as a gift for the university’s 125th anniversary in 2012.

The community is encouraged to take pictures with the sculpture and post them on

social media, but not many people are even aware of the impact William McMaster had on the University.

McMaster is one of two universities in Canada with only one individual as a founding benefactor; the other is McGill University. Without McMaster’s generous donation of $900,000 for the establishment of a university, the campus would not exist today. Since this was over 100 years ago, however, it is difficult for students to appreciate his contributions to the community.

This statue is an attempt to remedy the lack of awareness of the rich history of McMaster University. The Alumni Association considered many other philanthropic gifts, but decided on a statue similar to that of James McGill at McGill University and Benjamin Franklin at the University of Pennsylvania.

“The biggest purpose is to bring our founder to life,” said Karen McQuigge, Director of Alumni Advancement at McMaster. “Senator McMaster made a donation to start the university, and we’re named af-

ter him, and I think it’s important for students, faculty, staff, and alumni to remember him.”

The Alumni Association has campaigned to raise awareness of the history of McMaster University. Starting in 2012 with the commission of the statue from Albertan artist Zazo Hajdu, they’ve begun talking more about the Senator himself, as well as other famous people who have attended the university. With 127 years and over 170000 alumni, there are many great stories to tell.

in 1811, supported a number of philanthropic causes such as what is now the Toronto Chinese Baptist Church and the Sick Children’s Hospital. McMaster University was funded through a large endowment in his will.

“It’s a great thing he decided to do, to leave his life savings, what he had accomplished and donated it to start an educational institution,” McQuigge said. “I think it’s important to remember why we’re here.”

A first year engineering student at the University of Waterloo was struck and killed by a lightning strike on campus on Friday, Sept. 5. The university will not be releasing the student’s name based on her family’s request for privacy. President Feridun Hamdullahpur said, “on behalf of our entire community of students, faculty and staff, I express heartfelt condolences to this student’s family, friends and fellow students at this profoundly difficult time.”

The student died just days before she would have started classes in the nanotechnology engineering program.

The University of Ottawa’s new tuition discount for French-speaking international students has upset some of the university’s non-French speaking international students. The discount allows some students to save as much as $15,000 per year. The university’s chancellor, Michaëlle Jean, stated in 2013 that the reason was “to make its study programs more international, specifically by encouraging French-speaking students, fostering cultural diversity and ensuring a balance between official languages on campus.”

McGill University is marking the opening of its new $18.3 million facility for the Faculty of Dentistry. The facility will provide students with modern clinical facilities and active learning spaces. It will also be the first opportunity for pre-clinical and clinical training, community-based research, and administrative operations to be housed in one location in the Faculty’s history. The hope is for the different units to work more cohesively and serve the lower-income areas of Montreal more efficiently.

Photos of Carleton frosh leaders wearing shirts bearing the phrase “FUCK SAFE SPACE” have surfaced on social media.

The shirts are an apparent reference to the school’s safe space initiative to protect students from sexual harassment and homophobia. According to other frosh leaders, the shirts were worn in protest against a restriction on swearing during orientation week. As many as 16 students will be facing sanctions from the school. University president Roseann O’Reilly Runte said these sanctions will be issued subsequent to individual meetings.

A controversial decision was made by the Queen’s University athletics department to limit media credentials held by the Queen’s Journal, the campus paper, from eight to one. The restriction was in response to a story published last spring about the voting for varsity team of the year, which led Jeff Downie, Associate Director of Athletics, to state that “we will be reevaluating our relationship, and the privileged access we provide the Journal moving forward.” The department has since rescinded its initial decision and will provide the additional media passes as requested.

Mac introduces new academic pathways Interdisciplinary programs offered in humanities, science, and sustainability Krista Schwab News Editor kschwabi

Students can broaden their horizons with four new interdisciplinary degree and minor options offered at McMaster this year.

One of the new programs is Indigenous Studies, which has existed at McMaster for 20 years but is only now making progress towards becoming a stand-alone four-year Honours Bachelor of Arts program.

“In the last three years we went from one indigenous faculty to five,” said Rick Monture, Assistant Professor in English and Cultural Studies. “It has been a slow process for sure, we wished things had moved a bit faster, but we are happy where we are now.”

The Indigenous Studies program will provide students with a unique perspective on issues about the environment, history, spirituality, politics, and conflict resolution. The program will also offer courses in the Mohawk and Ojibwe languages.

“The program is inclusive to all students,” said Monture.

“When we started 20 years ago, it was always about building inclusivity and promoting awareness among non-indigenous people about who we are as indigenous people and our philosophies and histories.”

The new Honours Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies program will be available in September 2015, pending approval from the province.

McMaster is also introducing the combined Bachelor and

Master’s program in Biomedical Discovery and Commercialization, which uses an interdisciplinary approach to learning by combining the fields of business and biochemistry.

The program will begin in January 2015 with a small cohort of 15 third-year students who will study biochemistry and sciences along with business fundamentals.

“We came up with an unusual format, a Bachelors and Master’s,” said Eric Brown, Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences. “There is still quite a strong science curriculum but we will also teach [students] about drug discovery and development, everything from how the market drives that process to the discovery research that goes into it.”

The BDC program will consist of a fourth-year thesis and an entrepreneurial team project to strengthen both science and business skills. It will also engage students in the community through guest lectures and a four-month internship in fields such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or law.

Students already pursuing a major may be interested in the new interdisciplinary minor options, including a minor in African and African Diaspora Studies and a minor in Sustainability.

The minor in African and African Diaspora Studies teaches students about African diaspora societies around the world. It can be obtained by taking courses from over 15 departments in subjects such as

African literature, music, popular culture, ethnic relations, and history.

The minor in sustainability takes a similar approach, offering courses from departments such as commerce, anthropology, environmental science, and peace studies.

“The interdisciplinary minor provides an opportunity for students to learn about sustainability from various perspectives,” said Kate Whalen, Senior Manager, Academic Sustainability Programs. “Students can choose from 58 courses from across campus, enabling them to obtain a truly unique minor that can complement their major and help to satisfy their personal learning objectives.”

The interdisciplinary minor options are available for students to pursue in the 2014 year.

Whose Shine McMaster has exclusively donated its Shinerama fundraising to Cystic Fibrosis Canada since 1965.

As has been done every year since 1965, the $165,000 raised by students during Welcome Week 2014 will be donated to the national Shinerama campaign to be given to Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

However, some universities, such as Acadia University in Nova Scotia, have stopped donating Welcome Week funding to Shinerama in favor of supporting local charities, which raises the question of why. It’s a question even the Executive Board of the McMaster Student Union has been looking into.

“It would be great if McMaster could fundraise to help mental illness in Hamilton as this is a huge issue that is progressively getting worse,” said Nicole Rakowski, a fourthyear life science student and an avid volunteer in the Hamilton community.

Although some criticize Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s finances, over the years the Shinerama campaign has undeniably been successful in terms of generating funding for an important cause.

“The collective efforts of students have really made a difference,” said Dr. Andreas Freitag, the Medical Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at the McMaster University

Medical Centre. “The Hamilton Cystic Fibrosis Chapter, and Cystic Fibrosis Canada are really grateful for the support.”

Although a discussion on choosing which charity to support is divisive, critical discourse should ultimately be embraced at an institute of higher learning and critical thinking.

“Having a discussion and questioning and thinking about all these things makes a lot of sense,” said Violetta Igneski of the McMaster philosophy department.

A popular tradition Given cystic fibrosis is a rare disease, researchers are grateful that university

students across Canada have rallied behind this cause.

McMaster students have been especially passionate, consistently placing in the top tier of more than 60 Canadian campuses that donate Welcome Week fundraising towards Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

“In total we’ve raised over one million dollars,” said Karissa Holyer, this year’s MSU coordinator.

However, the cause has not been without controversy. In 2008, Carleton University’s Student Union passed a much-debated motion to stop their Shinerama campaign because of concerns that it is a disease that only affects white males. This false claim quickly generated intense criticism on a national level, including by Maclean’s and the Globe and Mail, leading to a reversal of the motion.

In reality, cystic fibrosis

is a disease caused by an autosomal recessive gene, meaning it is a rare genetic disorder, affecting around 4,000 Canadians. If both parents carry the gene, their child will have a one in four chance of having cystic fibrosis.

Although everyone with the disease has a different experience, generally cystic fibrosis generates mucus that clogs the lungs, leading to bacterial infections. The body also has a decreased ability to absorb key nutrients from food.

A campaign success story?

“It’s a great way to get involved in the community and make a difference,” said Jasmine Gilmour, a first-year Humanities student, of Shine Day. The campaign is a way to demonstrate that

McMaster cares about causes beyond campus.

With this type of enthusiasm typical of Shinerama participants, it’s not surprising that Cystic Fibrosis Canada seems to be prospering. The organization’s net fundraising revenue in 2013 exceeded $12 million.

As well, CFC has gained a high profile thanks to endorsements from celebrities like Céline Dion and Ben Mulroney, the organization’s national ambassador.

Despite these high profile endorsements and cross-Canada support, according to Charity Intelligence Canada, a foundation that analyses Canadian charities to increase accountability, CFC has an overall grade of B+.

This grade may be partially due to the organization’s over-

head costs. Almost $2 million of CFC’s budget is allocated to administration costs and $627,000 goes to meetings.

McMaster’s fundraising from 2013 ($139,534) is less than half of this overhead. Moreover, in 2013 the excess revenue over expenses was double the total raised by McMaster.

One of many important causes Cystic fibrosis is indisputably an important cause. There is currently no cure, but thanks to medical advancements, half of affected Canadians live to their 40’s and older. Despite these developments, Cystic Fibrosis is still the most common fatal

genetic disease in Canada.

Holyer believes that over the years the campaign has contributed to social change, citing the fact that since the Shinerama campaign started 49 years ago, life expectancy for people with cystic fibrosis has increased by an average of 11 months for each year the fundraising has taken place.

CFC grants support research on improving disease management and finding a cure. In fact, funding from Cystic Fibrosis Canada is regularly allotted to McMaster researchers like Dr. Freitag for whom grants are an integral source of funding.

But the MSU is not limited to choosing between supporting a local charity or a national one; a rotation or alter-

The passion of Welcome Week representatives and the first years who join them on Shine Day is admirable. But ultimately, given the huge sum of money being raised, McMaster students should think critically about where the money is going and why.

University of Alberta, students are able to take registered therapy dogs for walks around the community. At the University of Saskatchewan, professors with their own therapy dogs have been bringing them to campus as part of an initiative to foster connections between faculty and students.

Therapy dogs on campus have helped reduce the fear that some students have when approaching professors or faculty. Gillett expressed his intentions of incorporating such

techniques into the program at McMaster in the future, in order to foster greater community within the social science department and to improve student experience.

Students in the Faculty of Social Sciences have been overwhelmingly supportive of the program, recognizing the benefits for students. Daniel D’Angela, Welcome Week Planner for Social Sciences, expressed his support of the program after meeting scout at Faculty Day while he greeted

incoming students.

“The SPCA dog program is a great way to provide opportunities for students to de-stress with the added bonus of promoting resources that the University provides,” he said.

It is the intention of the program that Scout will have more of a full time presence at McMaster in the following school year once he has completed the therapy dog program, and will hopefully be accompanied by more furry friends.

David Wilkinson, Provost and Vice President (Academic) of McMaster University announced on Sept. 9 the allocation of $1 million towards creating ten new blended learning courses over the next two years.

The courses will focus on online learning, while also providing students with experiential opportunities to apply what they’ve learned online.

“We are working with the McMaster Institute for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning and working with the faculties, investing quite heavily in a number of those kinds of courses,” said Wilkinson. “Five different faculties are going to be engaged in this. The Faculty of Science in particular will be leading the way.”

As well as in the Faculty of Science, blended learning courses will be offered in engineering, business, social science and humanities. The new blended learning technique will mainly be used to develop first-year courses.

A portion of the $1 million allocation will be set aside for MIIETL to develop tools to measure the effectiveness of

blended and online learning strategies.

“There is evidence that providing students with different pathways to learn is effective. There is certainly lots of evidence that transfer of knowledge through lecture is a particularly ineffective approach […] to transmitting content,” said Wilkinson. “One of the areas where McMaster wants to lead through MIIETL is actually the development of evidence around [types of learning].”

In addition to the blended learning courses, McMaster has received funding from the Ontario Online Institute to develop seven online courses.

These courses will be offered to both first-year and upper-year students.

“We are going to focus more on blended learning than on purely online content, but we are developing online in a number of different ways,”said Wilkinson.

The Ontario Online Institute is a project that aims to provide online learning opportunities for students in Ontario, eventually enabling students to take online courses at different universities and apply the credit at their home school.

I have a problem with events like the Sidewalk Sale. It’s not because of the crowding or the insane lines, though anyone who participated can tell you that it’s a nightmare. It’s because I cannot find any legitimate reason why events like that happen. Why was it there?

It wasn’t for the benefit of students.

I doubt student lives were substantially enriched by a free slice of pizza or a can of Red Bull. If anything, student lives are hindered by the introduction of these unhealthy elements into their already-somewhat-less-than-healthy academic routines. So again, why was it there?

Do the organizers have a blood pact with local vendors that binds them to allow vendors to harass students once a year, during the busiest week of the year? I cannot categorically

disprove this, but it seems unlikely. So why was it there?

I can think of some reasons that might legitimize this event, though.

Perhaps this is the university’s way of offsetting tuition costs by renting BSB lawn space to corporate interests.

Maybe most of the vendors are actually showcasing lucrative, interesting opportunities for students down the line so they have options right out of university. Oh was it neither of those?

Then why was it there?

Students aren’t paying thousands of dollars a year for the privilege of having a strip mall grace their campus a few times a year. Their attendance at this institution implies an interest in higher learning, not great deals and subversive marketing. McMaster University could just as easily operate out of Limeridge Mall if this is the kind of direction that the administration wishes to pursue, which it isn’t, at least not openly. So why was the Sidewalk Sale there?

No? Then why was it there? I cannot reiterate this enough.

I’ll tell you why it was there, at least as far as I see it.

It was there because students are an easy mark.

It was there because those students are easily distracted by free shit. Too distracted to ask even the easy questions.

It was there because Welcome Week costs a lot of money, and that money has to come from somewhere.

It was there because it was there before, and again before that, and everything went swimmingly.

It was there and it will be there again, unless there emerges a reason for it to no longer be there. That reason can be you.

PRESIDENT’S PAGE I have two dream jobs. I would either like to be an honorary human member of a lion pride, or the president of a university.

At times I wonder which is more realistic. On the one hand we have a fictional and almost certainly fatal boyhood dream; on the other, somewhere between a quarter and a half-century long academic expedition.

Despite my unreasonably tangible desire to be a lion, I want to pursue a life in higher education. Why? Because universities breed a magic that I don’t ever want to leave behind for the socalled “real world”. Think

about it, these places exist solely to nurture thought.

Universities shape critics, comrades, and citizens. How could you ever want to leave?

Perhaps the most admirable thing about an academy like ours is its priority set not on impressing information upon our students, but on entrenching the value of studenthood itself. A place like this recognizes, and indeed relies upon, the fact that there is so much more to learn than what is simply exchanged in the classroom.

Last April, my housemates and I backed out of a potentially exploitative and disastrous lease. We have the tenants at the time to thank for reaching out to inform us of their landlord’s undeniably shady behaviour.

Many students aren’t so lucky.

On Sept. 6, a story was shared on Spotted at Mac about a landlord who took two months of rent but never responded when the student wanted to move in. More students commented about their own experiences with this particular landlord, urging others to avoid renting from them.

This landlord is only one of many who will manipulate and deceive students to rent their rooms. The students are then stuck in a twelve or, if they’re

lucky, eight-month long contract. Some rooms and houses don’t meet the safety standards, or aren’t up to code by Ontario rental guidelines, but are being rented out anyway due to a lack of resources, education and better options.

When the time comes to rent a place near campus, students find themselves too overwhelmed by the process of house-hunting, and lacking guidance, they often make uninformed decisions. Houses go quickly and potential landlords warn that they have another group interested in the house so they better act fast.

While some find the ads on Kijiji and Craigslist, others take the more cautious route of looking at McMaster’s Off Campus Resource page. Unfortunately, it does not appear as though the university takes any steps to regulate and verify the

Ultimately, McMaster has a responsibility to its students to ensure that things it affiliates itself with are safe and legal. Although students can post their renting horror stories on social media and hope it reaches their peers, it is not our sole responsibility to make sure we’re not exploited and manipulated by landlords.

Whether you just moved on, have been living in your house for a while, or are still looking for a place to call your own, don’t forget that your safety and health comes first.

Landlords aren’t allowed to bully you into accepting lesser conditions, and while pursuing legal action can be a hassle, it helps create better conditions for McMaster students.

Canada’s coffee culture As a major American fast food chain takes over Canada’s beloved donut and coffee shop, is it time to rethink what makes us Canadian?

Canadian identity becomes corporatized when we associate it with nothing more than which fast-food restaurant our loyalty lies with. And Tim Hortons realizes this. They are taking the pride Canadians have in their country and attaching themselves to it to try and make a profit.

We know this even more intimately in Hamilton, a city that boasts the first ever Tim Hortons store and a newly renamed Tim Hortons field. The news of the Tim Hortons and Burger King merger spread quickly after it was announced two weeks ago. Canadians reacted with both joy and outrage as their beloved Tim Hortons was once again in the hands of an international company, after previously being owned

by American company Wendy’s from 1995 until 2006.

Since the announcement, media outlets have run wild with speculation about the success of a Tim Hortons’ expansion worldwide and how the merger will affect service domestically. There is no doubt that any time two multinational companies conglomerate it is a story of great economic importance. What is most notable about the coverage of this story, though, is that it has often been reported as a story about Canadian identity rather than the merging of two fast food giants.

For a long time, the lore of Tim Hortons has been integrated into the realm of Canadiana.

The company has made a concerted effort to make their products synonymous with what it is to be Canadian in the minds

of consumers. Past campaigns have capitalized on “Canadian imagery,” including images of parents lovingly watching their child’s six a.m. hockey practice while sipping a double-double, or the more recent image of a husband bringing Tim Hortons to meet his newly immigrated family at the airport.

Is it not still “Canadian” if the onlooking father holds Second Cup while he watches his son run drills? Or if a husband greets his newly arrived family with Starbucks?

Early morning hockey practices and welcoming newcomers were “Canadian” long before Tim Hortons was established. Why then have we let a corporation co-opt Canadian identity?

Herein lies the problem: Tim Hortons does not define what it means to be Canadian. It’s true that their summer camps and support of minor

so that they can be active and healthy. Let’s strive to be a place where newcomers are welcomed, whether or not Tim’s coffee is involved. Let’s be bigger than a brand.

An introvert’s Welcome Week Welcome Week may be fun for the bold and boisterous, but what about the rest of us?

I was anxious about coming to Mac. A lot of things made me nervous: more difficult coursework, being away from my family, and having to provide food for myself. But what scared me the most was what thousands of 18-year-olds across the continent look forward to every year: frosh week.

Obviously, I didn’t have any first-hand understanding of what frosh would be like.

However, a lack of information is rarely an obstacle for a neurotic’s imagination. So, my mind conjured up images of the sprawling, alcohol-laden parties depicted in the Spike show Blue Mountain State and in Tom Wolfe’s I Am Charlotte Simmons.

Now, I understand that to many young adults, scenes like these may constitute paradise.

Personally, though, I don’t love parties. I don’t have a problem with people who do like them or with the culture. I don’t think I’m being more productive with my time by not attending (I’m not, I just watch shows I’ve already seen again on Netflix).

A week ago, I was intimidated. But I’m not anymore. Despite my introversion, I’ve had a really enjoyable and valuable Welcome Week experience. For my particular breed of introvert, just being around people is not the problem. It’s the chaos that is inherent of unstructured socialization that makes me queasy.

However, during Welcome Week, my days were largely planned out by my residence and faculty reps. We walk around in big groups and play games and have campfires. It’s a lot like summer camp. And like at camp, by the end of the day, I’m exhausted. So while some of

my peers go out and party, I go to sleep. (More accurately, I lose consciousness after drowning in a pool of my own sweat because I live in Edwards.) Maybe I’m not getting the “true” Welcome Week experience, but I’m having a good time and getting acclimated to my surroundings.

That’s definitely good enough for me.

The way Welcome Week is set up allows students to craft their own experience. There are plenty of activity options and always the opportunity to not participate. Hopefully, other people like me have found ways to make their first days at Mac rewarding. Hopefully they, too, have found that your enjoyment of Welcome Week isn’t directly related to how much alcohol you drink and that being a quiet person doesn’t inhibit your Welcome Week experience.

Maybe the two of you are just drifting apart – this happens sometimes in friendships. Try talking to her. Maybe she doesn’t realize that you feel this way, or maybe she is even feeling the same way. If that’s the case, you could try finding an activity that the two of you enjoy, and do it together.

This way, you can reconnect over something you have in common.

The moral dilemma of the Ebola vaccine During an on-going epidemic, who comes first?

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has taken over 1900 lives to date and counting. In August, Canada agreed to donate 800 to 1000 experimental vaccines to Africa, and the World Health Organization is meeting with 200 experts in Geneva to discuss how the vaccines should be divvied up.

During this two-day conference, they try to answer the following questions: How many doses should be given for research purposes, in order to establish a license on them for future Ebola outbreaks? Should priority be given to the health care practitioners who are generously risking their own lives to help with treating infected victims?

I am taking a more compassionate side because I think that it is best to give these limited vaccines to health practitioners who have been infected or are susceptible to the virus. An infected man in Port Harcourt spread the disease to a doctor, who in turn ended up spreading the virus to dozens of his patients. Doctors and nurses must be prioritized for the vaccines in order for them to safely treat their patients and better contain it. Ebola has already spread to Liberia, Guinea, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. This outbreak needs to be contained to the best of our ability before it spreads across the African continent and the rest of the world.

The World Health Orga-

nization’s Assistant Director General of Health Systems, Marie-Paule Kieny said, “if [the WHO] could at least treat the health-care workers, then they would be willing to go back to work without this fear of being themselves condemned to death.” We do not have the time or the supply of vaccines to begin researching and planning ahead for future outbreaks.

The focus needs to be put on containing and containing the current outbreak. Phase One of the human trials of Ebola vaccines will begin this week in the U.S., and a second vaccine from the Canadian Public Health Agency will begin testing in the next few weeks.

This testing will not provide enough supplies to stop this outbreak, but they should give answers regarding the effectiveness of the experimental vaccines on humans, and it will lay the groundwork for future development of the vaccines.

The question remains: is it really worth it to give the vaccines over for scientific research in hopes for the possibility of an answer? I don’t think so.

I think it is better to take the risk and use the experimental vaccines, whether they work or not, on the health practitioners.

Besides, they already have proof that the vaccine called Zmapp, which is still under development, has worked.

Zmapp was given to a North Carolina Missionary named Nancy Writebol who was infected with Ebola and made a full recovery. Additionally, a doctor working in

Africa named Kent Brantly who was infected from treating his patients was given Zmapp nine days after becoming ill and later made a full recovery.

It is clear that the health practitioners in Western Africa should be given priority for the vaccines. We are not in the proper stage of the outbreak to be perfecting our experimental vaccines. When the outbreak reaches a state of containment, only then should we focus on planning for the future.

Two weeks into their season, McMaster football is undefeated. Their opening win was not as methodical of a win as the team has seen the past few seasons – 26-2 over Queen’s in 2011, 50-9 over Guelph in 2012, and 51-24 over Ottawa last year – but it showed the team’s holes, while still getting a positive result over the Guelph Gryphons.

To combat Guelph’s blitzing style, Mac moved towards bootleg passes, play-action throws, and quick passing attempts involving a few reads and finding the open receiver. That is evident in the play-by-play of the third quarter, where quarterback Marshall Ferguson completed passes to a variety of receivers for gains of 4, 7 (twice), 10, and 11 yards before stretching it out for a couple of 20+ yard plays later in the game.

Behie says the offence loves their quick passing game but do not expect the second half success they achieved against Guelph to last week after week.

But there are so many weapons that even if teams scheme to take away some options, there will be players who can escape coverage.

If Mac can continue winning first downs – which will require an improved rushing game, a whole different beast in itself – then a deep playoff run should be well within reach for the No. 4 CIS-ranked team.

need to lock down more money if it wants to maintain its status as one of the strongest athletic programs in the country.

It is easy to see the name and, as McMaster students and alumni, pat ourselves on the back for being apart of the headline-grabbing move, but until we hear some tangible and concrete plans, I would refrain from popping bottles in the name of Grunwald. There’s still a ton of work to be done before we know if the splashy hire will bear any championship-winning fruit.

There is no reason to be anything but optimistic about the move. It is a big name coming to an already strong department, and members of the McMaster community should be thrilled with the choice.

This will raise the program up, but the question is: how high?

A former NBA executive’s acknowledgment of the existence of the CIS is a good thing, but for him to take helm of a program elevates the story.

People who would otherwise never care about the hiring of an athletic director are paying attention.

But it will be interesting to hear from Grunwald himself about why he took the job, and the details of his role could offer insight into the future of the role of athletic directors in Canadian university athletics. Grunwald has no known affiliation with the CIS prior to the hire – he attended Indiana University for his undergrad and MBA, and went to Northwestern for law school.

He then became a Canadian citizen in 1999, five years after he was brought on to work for the Raptors.

LifeStyle is excited to be back to walk you through all the latest trends.

In celebration of our return, here are some tips on how to survive this year:

Eat well, sleep well, dress well: It may take a little longer and cost a bit more, but a healthy student is a happy student. Being well rested and well fed makes you more alert.

Being well dressed makes you more attractive to yourself and others.

Set goals for the year: With these new solutions in mind, set new goals for yourself.

These goals don’t necessarily have to be academic, either.

Plan to read a book every month. Expand your vocabulary. The possibilities are really endless.

Meet new people: You’re probably quite comfortable in your friend group by now, but try to expand your circle and expose yourself to new ideas.

Head out to the Baltimore House one night with your friend. Join a new club.

Take a moment to reflect: Think about what hasn’t worked for you this past year and come up with new solutions. Find you’re not paying attention in class? Maybe this is the year to leave your laptop at home and take hand written notes.

Enjoy learning: Sounds like a tired cliché, but learning is really enjoyable when you’re engaged in your courses. If you have to take something out of necessity, think about the beauty of your end goal.

Buy your textbooks: or not: To this day my wallet hasn’t forgiven me for buying all my books new in first year. Can you buy it second hand, rent it, or find a pdf version? You and your parents will thank you.

How to deal with summertime sadness Change your view on what makes a summer valuable.

Come university, summer isn’t all fun and games anymore. Or at least that’s certainly now how it feels. In the good ol’ days, when there was nary a zit in sight nor the chipper outline of a unibrow, summer was synonymous with sleeping in, eating Lucky Charms whenever you wanted, checking out a movie just because a crush was rumoured to be there, and staying up through three scary movies thanks to too much coke and gummy worms.

During high school, summers generally looked the same. Just replace the giddy sleepovers with sweaty basement parties and replace the coke and gummy worms with… equally fun beverages.

But now? Apparently dabbling in the world of “adulthood” comes at a price. Yeah, it’s called tuition. Look it up.

Seriously, the more years we spend in university, the closer we get to calling ourselves, albeit hesitantly, adults. Summers are viewed as a chance to take

the first steps up some foggy career ladder, rather than the break it used to be. Students generally adopt one of three glorified ambitions for the four months that used to be synonymous with freedom: #getrichordietryin by working through the night on overtime hours, while banking on tip money and minimum wage to fuel a life of bar-hopping on your days off and saving for the return to university; pretending that there’s no such thing as summer and flinging themselves into summer school; or working the nine-to-five as a paid, unpaid, or somewhat-paid intern. If your summer didn’t look like this, don’t start a pity party. Instead, start celebrating your summer for what it was: a break.

Breaks satisfy different needs for everyone. Some people fill their breaks with something that we all generally perceive as productive, like a job or an internship or a killer

opportunity that stacks up their resume. That can be rewarding and exactly how they wish to spend their time, especially if the idea of lounging around the beach with friends or catching up on a good book invokes more anxiety than relaxation.

But there are many others who need this time to unwind, clear their heads, and recharge for the coming academic year, and that’s every bit as valuable. Remember that the path to success

isn’t on one rapidly moving conveyor belt.

If you miss a summer internship, you’re not off track f orever. Slowing down can open your eyes to all the other directions you can go in a way that a job cannot.

A sense of dissatisfaction with your summer isn’t necessarily just unfortunate either.

It can be constructive.

Recognize what made you upset with your time off and actively work to change that during the school year.

Missed some application deadlines? Apply early this year. Short a qualification?

Work on it before Christmas break. Having the chance to think critically about what caused that dissatisfaction is empowering.

Lastly, although Facebook can keep us in the loop with some of our more long-distance friends, it can also perpetuate a nasty case of FOMO (fear of missing out). This past summer, my Facebook feed was serving

up dish after dish of enviable summers – from saving rhinos in Africa to researching Alzheimer’s disease in a neuroscience lab in Arizona – and suddenly the summer I was completely satisfied with right before logging on began to look increasingly empty.

As soon as this happens, unplug. First, recognize that social media tends to catch a “best of ” version of life. Second, call up a friend and create your own “best of ” versions. Reminisce on what made your own summers special, then see if any photos reflect those moments.

Go ahead and post them to your wall – yes, your real bedroom wall because the best of life should be kept to yourself and those you really do love – and bask in a summer that was just as well spent as a summer saving rhinos. (Well, almost.

But we’ll just tackle that next summer, won’t we?)

Serving up “house-smoked, hand-cut smoked meat”, indulge in some of their deli classics, like piledhigh salami, smoked meat, and beef brisket.

This vegetarian and vegan alternative to grilled ground beef serves up Portobello mushroom caps sandwiched between two buns for the burger-loving herbivores of the world. Whether you eat meat or not, try one of their chic grilled burgers or one of their raw or gluten-free menu items.

Maybe the greatest food ever now has its own personal food truck. With an array of meatball sandwiches and *meatball poutine*, the main chef at The Meatball Shoppe uses his rural Hamilton roots to bring the freshest ingredients to his street front truck.

Surviving university with ADD/ADHD Six tips on how to ensure academic success.

About five per cent of school children are diagnosed ADD/ ADHD. Though that number decreases as they reach adulthood, not all of us grow out of it. If you’re like me, you have trouble organizing your plans, your room, and anything else that you need to stay on top of.

For me, navigating university with ADD/ADHD is kind of like being in a room full of people who all want your attention. I become so overwhelmed that I just turn around, walk out, and get some frozen yogurt in solitude. Without tactics in place to minimize disorganization, it can be quite stressful. Even if you don’t have ADD/ADHD and are just a naturally disorganized person, the best way to ensure success is to find a tactic that works for you. As a person with severe ADD/ADHD in the 99th

percentile of diagnoses, I’ve learned some tips and tricks along the way that keep me on top of things.

1) Use a planner

This can be a lifesaver. Whether you use an agenda, a wall calendar, or your phone, make sure you write down all your due dates, upcoming appointments, and even your plans with friends to avoid double booking. It’s not enough to just write things in your day planner—make sure you actually look at it too.

2) Set up a routine

By the second last week of August, I started settling into my daily routine. The transition from summer to school is easy for me because of a full-time job that requires me to wake up by seven and head to bed by eleven. However, if you, three a.m., and Netflix got very close during the summer months, you may want to decide on

a wakeup time and a sleep time. For some, those two are enough, but you can also plan your wake-up, breakfast, medication, study, and bedtime. Even if you don’t have class at the same time every day, I recommend waking up at the same time anyway. Though your schedule may be broken the morning after a couple of six packs, following a routine for the most part means there is less to think about.

3) Set goals (and rewards!)

I set up a three-goal reward system that helped me kill two birds with one stone. I’m the worst at delayed gratification.

I’ll eat stale donuts even if I know there’ll be fresh ones in an hour. But I trained myself to set three goals for myself, from something as simple as “email professor about assignment” to “don’t forget medication for a week”. Your reward can be after however many goals and be whatever you want, but I find

4) Do menial tasks with a friend

It’s perfectly okay to not be able to focus all the time or feel like you just can’t get organized sometimes. Take the steps that are right for you, but don’t measure yourself on another’s “ideal”. Figure out how to manipulate external things like alarms and calendars so they can help you reach whatever goal(s) you set. Although school generally gets easier when you manage to organize, sometimes the restless and messy kids grow up to be the restless and messy adults, and that’s totally okay.

Many people hate cleaning their room, especially when you just cleaned it a week ago and have no idea how all of your clothes got on the floor.

When it comes to things we just don’t want to do, having a friend over who doesn’t mind just hanging around with you while you do your chores can make it a less sleep-inducing experience. If they’re nice enough, they might even offer to help. If they’re like my friends, they’ll probably just keep telling you about the spots you missed.

MUSIC REVIEW: Swet Shop Boys EP

Forget A$AP Rocky, Himanshu “Heems” Suri has been the most interesting figure in the New York rap scene since he burst onto the scene with his group Das Racist in 2010.

The Queens-raised Indian transplant’s story is far from conventional. Educated in economics at Wesleyan College and a former employee in the financial sector, Hima seems at first glance to have had a life fairly free from turbulence.

But his rhymes leave him as Rudyard Kipling’s opposite, as he explores the brown man’s burden with an almost lazy flow that somehow makes his ruminations on race and socio-economics even more striking.

A lot of people were sad when he announced Das Racist’s split, but Heems didn’t leave us hanging for long with two solo mixtapes fulfilling everyone’s desire for angry diaspora rap. Using his business acumen, Heems has seen his label Greedhead Music grow, and with that growth comes a special collaboration EP between himself and London-based Pakistani Riz MC, with their duo being dubbed Swet Shop Boys.

The four-song EP is brilliant, to put it frankly. While Heems’ verses are strong, the EP serves as a coming-out party for Riz on this side of the pond. The entire release has a palpable sense of continuity that is only compounded by the obvious chemistry Heems and

Riz share, which is evident in the video they shot for the Ryan Hemsworth-produced banger “Benny Lava”.

The beats that the two spit over are rapid-fire and full of Indian samples. The cultural references that they make may alienate the white listener at first, but that’s the very point.

Just in the way that Heems makes privileged white guys aware of their privilege on Twitter, he does the same with his truth-heavy verses while his partner on the mic joins in on the fun. Swet Shop Boys is an enjoyable listen, but also one laden with meaning beyond the witty allusions.

As The Bots walked towards me behind the Rock Stage at Riot Fest, it finally struck me that these guys were my age and touring the world off the back of their burgeoning band. My fleeting existential crisis gone for the moment, I gave Mikaiah and Anaiah Leh daps and immediately struck it off with the two-piece rock act. The pair of brothers hails from L.A. and it shows in their laidback demeanor. Mikaiah, 20, and Anaiah, 18, are of mixed Caribbean-Asian descent and are responsible for guitar/vocals and drums respectively. They jammed together for ten years before deciding to become a full-fledged band seven years ago, and they haven’t looked back since.

Listen to: ‘5:17’ Time has proven to be an amicable force working in The Bots’ favour. It has spurred them past the awkward stages of puberty and put them on a fast track to stardom. The fact that they were homeschooled allowed them to spend an ample amount of time on the road, and it shows in the tightness of their performances.

“You do find a comfort zone and get a handle on things and how you want them to sound; everything becomes more streamlined and you can tell,” said Mikaiah, of the experience they’ve gained over the years.

Both of them also attested to the crazy sights they’ve seen at their shows.

“We played in Denmark once and we had a weird crowd who made a wall of death. That wasn’t that out place, since you expect that, but there was a guy in a cow suit and people were

throwing wigs on stage and yelling ‘take it’. There was a lot of violence, which we don’t advocate, but they wanted it. We play shows where we perform folk songs and people still crowdsurf and go wild,” said Mikaiah.

The band says they’ve seen a good number of performances that have inspired both the songwriting on their upcoming record and their shows.

They agreed that Kanye West’s headlining set in Sweden was fun to watch. Mikaiah gushed about Metronomy who “have five people on keyboards and it still doesn’t sound electronic somehow, which is really nice,” while Anaiah listed off Buddy Rich, Johnny Blackwell, and Brian Chase as major drumming influences.

Their sophomore effort Pink Palms is out on Oct. 13 via Fader Label, and the pair both spoke about how excited they were for others to hear it.

The writing and recording process began in November 2013 and concluded in late May, with Justin Warfield helping with production in a Hollywood studio. They worked close to every other day as Anaiah finished up his schooling. The experience of working closely with a producer was a new one for the band, but one that they enjoyed learning about.

“It made me realize that I want to take it back for the next album like how people in the 60’s and 70’s used to do it in an analog old-school studio.

The current album is very produced, not in a sellout way, but it’s something you would hear on the radio because it’s a way to get our foot in the door.

Hopefully it will lead people to be more interested to see what we come out with for the next album,” said Mikaiah.

Both Mikaiah and Anaiah praised Damon Albarn for the

support he’s shown them, not only by inviting them to tour with him, but also in giving advice when they needed it most.

Anaiah said that Albarn helped alleviate the stress that the two felt after signing with Fader Label and feeling the need to live up to expectations on their second record.

“We talked to him at SXSW not too long ago and he said ‘just keep on writing tunes.’

Writing tunes is what it comes down to, and also what the next album will rely on. It shouldn’t be as much about production value, which is great. The songs need to be good,” said Mikaiah.

“Melodies and tunes, that’s what it’s about,” chimed Anaiah.

The Bots have high aspirations, but if they just keep Albarn’s words close to heart, they’ll have terrific chances of achieving them.

Few days resound in our memory as this one does. The Speculator staff would like to take a moment to remember a moment that defined the decades that followed it.

In a time when most just want to go about their daily lives without being reminded of how unskilled and unkind they are, on man rose to change the status quo. He was quickly silenced.

Late yesterday afternoon, police arrested a man who was repotedly performing many selfless acts of good to complete strangers.

“Not on my watch, not in this city,” said Police Chief Carl Gunderson, of the Hamilton Police Department.

“All it takes is one stupid act of kindness to ruin everyone else’s day. Hamilton operates on a very fragile balance of chaos and shitbaggery,” said Gunderson.

The man was described by witnesses as “appropriately dressed,” “cordial,” and “too friendly for his own good.”

“He gave one absolutely putrid-smelling homeless man a tenner from his wallet and didn’t even wait for someone to watch him give it,” said one bystander. “What’s the point of that?”

Just earlier this week, Jackson Square was a host to 17 stabbings, eight thefts, and three random acts of violence and/or verbal abuse.

Police confirmed that this was the usual amount for a Tuesday afternoon.

“We have no patience for radicals, and nothing is more radical in Hamilton than basic compassion for your fellow humans,” said Gunderson.

The man’s loving family has since posted his bail of $1,200. A hearing has been scheduled for next week, in which the city is aiming to prosecute him to the full extent of its regulations, which prohibit “any and all explicit acts of selflessness or good.”

The city hopes to not repeat a similar incident that took place in the spring of 2004, when a woman was offering free hugs to passerby to combat depression, and was shot dead by police. Officers on site claimed that “she was killing with kindness, which is a thing people say, right?”

Police urge all downtown Hamilton visitors or residents to avoid some common mistakes, such as: smiling, thanking others, or throwing garbage in receptacles.
