A new report on women’s leadership in the Hamilton and Halton region reveals that women are underrepresented in senior leadership positions across a variety of sectors.

The report, co-authored by Karen Bird, associate professor of political science at McMaster, and Samantha Jackson, PhD candidate, looks at 2,565 women in senior leadership positions across nine different sectors. It finds that women are underrepresented in all sectors, except for the voluntary sector.

“It is really important to have these numbers, because we think it is 2014 and we have achieved equality, and there’s kind of a movement or buzz that there’s no need for feminism anymore,” said Bird. “I think our numbers should cause us to think about that, [and] reflect on that.”

Women are especially underrepresented in senior leadership positions in the corporate sector, with an average of 17.8 percent of women in top positions, and the private legal sector with a dismal 24.2 percent representation.

“There are barriers in private law firms to women achieving partnership. Even though women enter into the law firms, at the entry level, in reasonable numbers, […] they are not making it to partner,” said Bird.

“It stood out as a very stark lack of inclusiveness of women.”

Women make up more than half of law school graduates, yet are still underrepresented in senior positions in the legal sector. Judiciary positions are the most representative at 40.5 percent, followed by 33.3 percent of Crown and Deputy Crown positions.

“There’s this very popular argument that women need to lean in, we want to say that organizations need to lean in too,” said Bird.

Bird is also working to create positive trends in women’s leadership at McMaster. As a part of the Academic Women’s Mentorship Ad Hoc Committee, she has helped to plan a series of lectures from women in leadership positions across multiple disciplines. The lecture series will highlight women’s success stories as well as barriers faced, and strategies to overcome those barriers. The series will begin Nov. 6 and is open to students from any faculty.

The report on women’s leadership has been made possible by contributions from McMaster’s Faculty of Social Science, the YWCA Hamilton, and Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. The Academic Women’s Mentorship lecture series is funded by a grant from President Patrick Deane’s Forward with Integrity initiative.

Queen’s opens $63 million performing arts centre Queen’s University has now opened the Isabel Bader Centre for Performing Arts as a new home for the university’s multiple arts departments. The center holds a 560-seat concert hall and a 150-seat studio theatre, as well as an art gallery, screening room, production studio, media lab and rehearsal hall. Joint courses are to be offered at the Bader Centre allowing students to explore interdisciplinary performance experiences through creative and collective work.

MRU opens Community Disaster Research Centre Mount Royal University opened Canada’s first Community Disaster Research Centre on Sept.

18. This centre was created in response to the Calgary floods in 2013 and the need for a social perspective on disaster relief.

The director of the centre, Tim Haney, claimed that the number of annual disasters could double by 2050, meaning that the need for a relief and research centre would be vital.

McGill football player charged with assault McGill University has suspended Luis-Andres Guimont-Mota, a varsity team running back, after the player was charged with armed robbery, assault, and uttering threats. McGill’s provost claims the school will thoroughly investigate the matter and will “take any measures that are deemed appropriate.”

The 22-year-old will be in court on Thursday, pleading not guilty, for assaulting his 21-year-old wife.

Joyce Foundation donates $10 million to uWindsor Ron Joyce, Chairman of the Joyce Foundation, will provide a yearly $8,000 bursary for UWindsor students demonstrating financial need. The award, named in honour of Windsor native and former politician Ed Lumley, will become the most significant support for students in need of financial aid in UWindsor history.

With “Great Neighbourhoods” comes great responsibility Mac professor is taking to the streets to launch new street-view project

Starting this week, you’ll have the chance to see professor of Health, Aging, and Society Jim Dunn roaming the streets of Hamilton, putting his Great Neighbourhoods Visualization Project into action.

Over the next few weeks, Dunn will be using a camera-car system, referred to as Mobile Urban Video Recording, in order to map the city of Hamilton, street by street, frame by frame. The project is aiming to identify the key visual features in neighbourhoods that indicate whether the physical environment is conducive to being a good family setting.

“When we wanted to characterize neighbourhoods [before], we had census data, which really doesn’t tell you anything about the neighbour-

hood: it tells you about who lives in the neighbourhood. And we’ve had survey data, which is people’s perceptions of the neighbourhood, and so people are interested in this because it’s kind of the first objective data that’s available on neighbourhoods,” Dunn said.

Dunn’s project, whose unique approach is matched by only one other academic researcher in North America, stems partially from an idea in criminology that the physical environment and the visual disorder from a neighbourhood can affect the level of crime and behavior in that area.

Although his team at the CRUNCH laboratory in McMaster is focused on the physical environment of neighbourhoods, Dunn explained that the ability to create an archive of images each year will allow their work to extend beyond the goals of the project. Dunn commented that, in the past,

“In the future we might be able to do other projects where we recode it. So we might come up with new ideas.”

In many ways, the project and car bear a close resemblance to the work done with Google Street View; in fact, for the technology, Dunn’s team worked with Immersive Media, the co-developer of the Street View technology. However, the team’s goal is to take a more consistent view of Hamilton neighbourhoods, both in the creation of a seamless street view and the year-after-year progression of Hamilton areas.

Of course, concerns are also warranted when considering the potential ramifications on privacy.

View on roaming and capturing images of entire neighbourhoods, Dunn maintains that the project “meets or exceeds all of the privacy protections that Google has in place.”

“When we collect our images, we’re not posting them on the internet. We keep them all privately [on a] secure server,” Dunn said. “The sensitivity really has to do with the fact that there’s potentially identifiable images of people, [but] for the most part, we don’t really have the camera resolution to get identifiable images.”

Although the project can potentially be viewed as contentious, Dunn is open to discussion about issues of confidentiality and privacy. “[Talking about] privacy and confidentiality issues is, in a way, good for us because it let’s people know that, ‘hey listen, we’ve thought about this, and we take it seriously, and here’s what we’re doing.’”

McMaster University’s Senate and Board of Governors have re-appointed current President and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane for a second five-year term on a unanimous decision announced last Friday, Sept. 26.

The committee was united in appointing Deane as a highly respected leader for the McMaster community. The Board of Governors and the Senate also asked faculty, students, and

alumni for input that influenced the decision. The university community participated in the selection process by submitting written opinions to the committee.

Deane, who started his first term in July 2010, was a former Vice President at the University of Winnipeg and Vice Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University.

“The university is certainly a place of learning, and it undoubtedly exists to serve society. But it is also importantly a

place of research and discovery, and over the next six years the advancement and support of research will be a key priority”, Deane told the Daily News. He also mentioned McMaster’s position as a highly respected institution of research excellence according to the recently released international rankings, and aimed to see that standing rise even further.

Deane will start his second term on July 1, 2015.

“Music brings people together,” said Jillian McKenna, the bassist of the Jazz Band ensemble. “This place shows that there’s a lot more to music than we take for granted.”

As a volunteer and previously a research assistant at the LIVELab, Mac student Dana Swarbrick agreed with this sentiment. As an undergraduate, she received a neuroscience award and was funded to work last summer with Laurel Trainor, the founding director.

“It was designed to look at the interaction and engagement between audience and performers,” Swarbrick said. “But it can be used for so much more.”

Internationally and locally, non-profit organizations are looking for assistance, but it is often difficult to cut through the clutter of the many fundraising projects fighting for attention.

Audrey Tan, a third-year student in the Health, Aging, and Society program decided to take a unique approach to fundraising for two organizations, by starting her own used jewelry sale called All that Glitters.

“I got the idea because my friend in Ottawa held a similar [project] last year called All that Glam, which was in support of a children’s breakfast program up north. She raised $9,000 in one morning,” said Tan. “I thought, wouldn’t this be a great opportunity for us to replicate something like this in Hamilton.”

McMaster researchers have discovered that an anticonvulsant drug may be the key to fighting antibiotic resistant infections.

In Canada alone, an average of 22 hospitalized patients die every day as a result of acquiring antibiotic resistant infections. These “superbugs” are resistant to many medications and have grown increasingly prevalent.

Though well over 100 antibiotics exist, their collective mechanisms of action boil down to one of the following: kill the bacteria, or stop its multiplication.

A group of McMaster scientists have discovered a potential new class of antibiotics that stop a part of the bacteria from being produced at all.

In a study led by Eric Brown, a professor of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, a vast array of drugs were tested for how they affected ribosomes in bacteria.

Ribosomes are critical to the function of a cell, as they are responsible for generating proteins.

The study found that lamotrigine, an anticonvulsant, is a chemical inhibitor that stops ribosomes from being produced in bacteria.

“Ribosome-inhibiting antibiotics have been routinely used for more than 50 years to treat bacterial infections, but inhibitors of bacterial ribosome assembly have waited to be discovered,” Brown said. “Such molecules would be an entirely new class of antibiotics, which would get around antibiotic resistance of many bacteria. We found lamotrigine works.”

Antibiotic resistance constitutes one of the biggest threats to global health, and is responsible for considerably lengthened periods of illness, higher mortality rates, and excessive medical care costs.

The discovery of lamotrigine’s hidden potential and the examination of its mechanism of action has led researchers to have a better grasp of how ribosomal assembly in bacteria works and how to formulate drugs to target that process.

While this research cannot address all the facets of the pandemic, it could allow for the rise of medications that can overcome the resistances that current bacterial strains have developed.

“I love soccer. I played competitively for five years. There was one time when I was in a tournament - I was 13 - and we were about to get kicked out of the tournament.

We went into extra time and I scored the game winning goal.

It was cool because I play defense so I don’t usually get to score - they just put me as striker. That was the best moment of my soccer career.”

“What’s the most difficult thing about being musicians?”

“Piano lessons. For sure. I like to do my own thing when I play piano and I don’t like to read what’s on the sheet music. Also I learn slower, so music lessons are a challenge, because you have to learn quickly, and play quickly, in front of people that are there to judge you.”

“I just think it’s really time-consuming. You constantly have to practice, and it’s not one of those things that you can start and then finish. You have to keep it up, and you can’t slack off for one day or just stay home.

It’s a lot of class time and preparation.”

“What’s the scariest aspect of music?”

“I’m a little bit behind the rest of my program, so I guess there’s the fear that people will look down on you because you’re not as good as them. Music can be really competitive, and I’m not competitive at all.”

“Not being prepared for a performance is the scariest thing that can happen to you. I did an RCM exam and was completely unprepared, to the point where I was shaking the entire exam. I just couldn’t make anything sound good.”

But at 14 I just wanted to be Christina Aguilera. I sang a lot of Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey when I was younger - you can’t even imagine. So I guess as my voice matured, the love of opera kind of grew with it.”

“What was the happiest moment of your life?”

“When my boyfriend proposed to me two years ago. That was really happy. I kind of guessed it would happen, but it was pretty memorable.”

“Are you two married now?”

“We’re waiting until we’re done school - we were only in first year then. But we’ve been dating for 6 years.”

“Did you perform?”

“I performed quite a bit, but it just seemed like other people were more interested in my talent than I was. I’m not very forthcoming about it.”

“What’s is your biggest fear right now?”

“Being lost forever.”

“Any advice for younger people?”

“Think critically.”

“So what do you study now?”

“Well, I was in BioPsych for three years, and it was horrible. So now I’m in English and Film.

I’m actually writing a science fiction novel right now with one of my friends.”

“What’s the plot of the novel?”

“It’s about what happens to people when they die. So the whole idea is that when a person is born, they have a certain quota of bad and good acts they have to perform before they pass away, and you never know what your quota is. So if you don’t meet your quota, you’re in this purgatory, where you occupy the same space as the living but they can’t see you. So there’s good ghosts and bad ghosts depending on what quota you have to fill. And that’s not even half of it!”

Don’t worry about the destination Picking a career path doesn’t have to depend on your starting salary. Aim to have a fulfilling experience, not the one you are expected to have.

A few days ago I struck up a conversation with a cab driver that led me to question some of the things that usually go without thought. He seemed vastly overqualified for what he was doing. He spent roughly two years doing communications work for the Canadian army, on nightly flights over Afghanistan. He speaks six languages. He has an electrical engineering degree from a respected post-secondary institution from his home country.

It didn’t quite seem right that he was driving unruly students to and from Hess.

The world needs doctors and engineers. There’s no disputing that. Does that world need as many as a standard university enrollment may lead one to expect? Perhaps not.

Too often I see students who were pressured by their parents or relatives

into pursuing a path that would lead to a lucrative but difficult career. I’m sure a fair number of these students grew up wanting to take these paths, but I find it difficult to believe that they all imagined themselves doing open-heart surgery at age six.

And a great deal of those students won’t make it. That’s just the harsh reality of the rigourous standards that are in place for medical, judicial or engineering professions. There’s the age-old frosh week chant “half of you will fail.” It’s funny because it has an element of truth.

So instead of spending your golden years pursuing a path that you may not actually want might not succeed in, why not do something that might make you happy?

My own parents spent much of my childhood urging me to pursue dentistry or math, which only made me want to do it that much less. It wasn’t my calling, and if I’m being honest with myself, I would probably be a pretty shitty dentist, if they would

even ever let me get remotely close to the point of finding that out.

I’m not optimistic about my financial future, but very few jobs nowadays can actually provide that, and with little guarantee.

That cab driver pursued a path that ultimately led him looking for work in his field to no avail, and settled on something that gets him less income, but is, in his words, “extremely calming.”

If you want to cut people open and save lives, more power to you. I will probably need you one day. If you are trying to do it for the salary, you are setting yourself up for dissappointment.

The world needs writers. The world needs analysts and event planners. The world even needs snobby restaurant critics. They don’t make as much but we get by.

Your life is only so long. Don’t spend the majority of it preparing yourself for a future that someone else wanted.

Letter to the Editor

Last week’s editorial, “On hacking, privacy, and common sense” [September 25, 2014, PAGE 10] touched on the important topic of identity theft in our lives. Unfortunately, it did so by trivializing the efforts of those who criticize the nude leaks of female celebrities. It also ignored the serious issue of gender-based harassment on the internet. I don’t understand why belittling the crimes committed against women’s bodies online is necessary in order to raise awareness about identity theft. The insinuation that fighting against the use of women’s bodies without their consent as somehow “championing a cause that makes light of so many others” is an extremely offensive

claim.

I know it is easier to understand how the theft of money harms people, but the loss of bodily autonomy is an injury faced by many women, nameless and celebrity. Raising awareness about certain crimes should not require criminal Olympics to determine their legitimacy or rank their impact on victims. Whether these predators are online to steal our identities, use our bodies without our consent, or “hiding in the bushes waiting to ruin our life” we should be finding ways to create a safer community.

Our perception of money changes as we grow up. When we were children, money bought us candy. As adults, money still buys us candy ... but it also buys us other things, like our education.

For many, university is the first time we have to start managing our own money. But aside from purchasing the essentials like rent and food, we now have the opportunity to buy what we want, when we want it. For some, the freedom to purchase anything at anytime can cause their finances to spiral out of control. Alternatively, others will stretch their money as thin as possible in an attempt to meet payment deadlines. Neither of these scenarios present an ideal financial situation, and both can have the same, discomforting effect - financial stress.

Financial stress is all too prevalent among post-secondary students, which leads many to beg the question: “what can we do to end this stress?” My answer? Education.

During our time at McMaster, we will become experts in our fields of study. However, it is uncommon for a student to become financially literate. In fact, a recent study showed that 84% of post-secondary students wished they were better educated in financial

management after graduation. In an effort to deliver this type of education, the McMaster Students Union (MSU) has partnered with the Student Success Centre to bring you Dollar Daze Week, running from October 6 - October 10, 2014. During this week, students will have the opportunity to attend free workshops on a variety of topics ranging from credit card use, to financial planning, and more. On October 7, we are excited to welcome former Dragon’s Den star Bruce Croxon, along with Kevin Conchran from Enriched Academy, to TwelvEighty to tell you their secrets for money management and entrepreneurial success. That’s right, you have the opportunity to learn financial management skills from a self-made millionaire.

Financial management skills are some of the most important skills a student can learn during their post-secondary experience. At university we are often faced with stress caused by schoolwork and our personal lives. While we all deal with stress in different ways, financial stress is something that can be avoided entirely. It is my hope that Dollar Daze Week will encourage everyone to look at their financial habits a little more closely; eventually making financial stress a thing of the past.

It’s time for Spotted at Mac to censor hateful posts and comments PAGE 15

Colonialism in higher education Dismantling it will take more than just “decolonizing our minds”

“[Colonialism] turns to the past of the oppressed people, and distorts, disfigures, and destroys it. This work of devaluing pre-colonial history takes on a dialectical significance today.”

These words, written half a century ago by philosopher Frantz Fanon, are still relevant today. Colonialism is the vestige of European imperialism that imposes unbalanced power structures that favour colonists over other groups. As university students, our most common and intimate relationship with colonization is through our education. University education, as well as ideas of what constitutes higher education, has become a gear in the machinations of colonial practices.

We regularly witness colonialism in the content of our courses, in the manner and the setting in which courses are taught. At McMaster, a quick glance at the undergraduate calendar for programs like Art History, English or Sociology shows that only about 25 percent of those courses are concerned with non-European subjects. General or introductory courses are almost completely European in subject matter.

Areas of study including the

Humanities, Social Sciences and Business are used to critically examine the human condition. Through the omission of non-European groups, realities of racialized and marginalized groups have been shelved. To decolonize education would be to redefine what it means to be human.

The manner of discussion surrounding non-European people, ideas, and history is problematic. The “objective” discourse of these groups of people can reduce those very people to objects. Education systems place a specific group as dominant and normative, and all other groups become just that – the “other.”

The setting in most university classes can reaffirm the colonial foundations suspected of being taught. University classes are often structured to have a single teacher, with the complete lexicon of knowledge, surrounded by learners. The structure in itself reaffirms power hegemonies similar to that of a colonizing power towards a colony. The roles in the classroom are not interchangeable, and when a learner is unable to assume the role of a teacher it reduces classroom experiences to a single narrative.

To clarify, decolonization here does not refer to the integration of different communities, whether African, Asian, Indigenous, etc. The tolerance of colonized people within a colonial system appears as progress, but it is merely a step in a circular path.

Rather, decolonization involves shifting from a culture of denial to the creation of space for new philosophies and systems of knowledge. This can alter cultural perception and power relations in material ways. In Canada, the call for indigenous knowledge in education has been met with the establishment of Aboriginal Focus Schools. This school teaches skills and knowledge within the context of aboriginal cultural values.

To combat colonialism in higher education, the voices of all groups must be brought into the discussion of course curricula and instruction.

McMaster currently has programming in Indigenous Studies, Jewish Studies, Asian Studies and most recently, African and African Diaspora Studies. Having personally witnessed the growth of the African and African Diaspora Studies Program, I have an appreciation for the deliberate establishment of cornerstone programs. These areas of study address the longstanding gaps within university programming. Educational reform can only be the result of analysis, problem solving and discussion – so let’s continue the conversation.

Consumerism and climate change What does the economy have to do with the problem of global warming?

Naomi Klein’s new book, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate, was released last week, fittingly right before a crowd of 300,000 in New York City rallied to draw attention to climate change.

In response to Klein’s book, Globe and Mail editorialist Margaret Wente disparaged it as a case of “childish form of magical thinking.” Wente is predictably a member of the camp that quickly condemns grassroots movements. For example, she frowns upon aboriginal protests against pipelines and hydroelectric dams and Greenpeace initiatives, as folks who just don’t understand the imperativeness and functioning of the global economy – as if the literal economy, and not the earth, is our lifeline.

Wente charges Klein with ignoring the presumption that China and other developing nations are unwilling and unlikely to be harnessed into emissions agreements, and that therefore, Klein and other activists

“should do themselves a favor and grow up.”

What Wente seems to be feeding on is the apparently impervious claim that if we stop extracting oil or decrease our demand in the global economy, it will be found or demanded elsewhere. Right. But Canada is geographically a large country with substantial resources, a population that for the most part lives comfortably within first-world conditions, i.e. a socio-environmental situation where we can afford to reduce our footprint. Trucking on with the rest of the world is not a better alternative.

We are talking about the economy here. It’s not a person, it’s not alive – we know it’s not as free a market to support any neoliberal arguments, and it’s not on its way there either. It is altered in un-free ways now via the world’s largest oligopolistic corporations, trade bloc agreements, nationalism movements in some countries, etc. So what’s the harm in altering it in more ways, ways that benefit the earth – our real lifeline?

view with the National Post, Klein said that her lifestyle has changed and that she only flies “one-tenth as how much” she used to. She also argued that the “environmental movement has overstressed the consumer side of it.”

It’s easy to agree that change needs to come in the form of legislation shaping corporate practices that are admittedly a major part of the solution, but I disagree that the consumer side is overplayed. Sure, I get that each plastic bag I don’t take home from Fortinos isn’t making a big difference; consumers don’t have as much effect on matters as we are feigned to believe. However, unless we – consumers – change our lifestyles to adapt to a world that uses less fossil fuel, and

grow to enjoy taking public transit, riding bikes, shopping local and not buying out-of-season produce – we are going to be poor accompaniments to the fight against climate change. We are not going to elect governments that create the necessary policies if we don’t like how our lives will be altered. I think everyone makes the mistake of reducing situations in order to find an easy answer, but to reiterate a point from Canadian author, John Ralston Saul, in these cases, which revolve around ethics, there is no easy answer.

Saul writes about the imperative of individual compromise in relation to ethical choices, in this case, becoming environmentally conscious.

A mindful attitude with the freedom to do what we should and not what we always want, while evolving our sustainable philosophies and techniques, will make us better citizens of the earth.

Economics is an ideology, and to borrow another point from Saul, “it is promoted as if it were civilization’s first item of importance…[requiring] common false sense, because it is built on inevitabilities and demands passivity”.

I reiterated this to a friend over a pint last night and he replied that climate change is another ideology just the same.

Fine, call it that, call it whatever you want. But the image of polar ice caps melting is inarguable evidence of a phenomenon that needs more ingenuity from people like Klein and less ignorance from the Wentes of this world.

You may have noticed an influx of butts in popular media. Even the prestigious Vogue is getting in on this. Like, oh, thank god, I don’t have to hide my butt in shame anymore because Vogue says it’s okay. I’ll also point out that a lot of the ones you featured aren’t even that big.

What about the thick chicks?

I mean, I was excited at first because I thought this meant I might finally be able to find a pair of jeans that fit my butt-towaist ratio, but then I realized hips weren’t in, and then I realized how stupid it is that a body part could be a trend. Are you telling me that my butt, kind of a constant in my life, is going to go out of style just like snap bracelets and bucket hats (I’m sorry, bucket hats are not back in style, you’re being lied to)?

Bucket hats be damned, but Sir Mix-A-Lot never goes out of style. When I heard Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” was sampling one of the greatest butt anthems of all time I knew it was going to make my shower playlist.

When J.Lo and Iggy came out with “Booty”, at first I thought “alright, this could be a thing that I enjoy,” but instead I found myself watching a raunchy video with lyrics like “it’s his birthday, give him what he asks for.” Excuse you, J.Lo and the countless other writers of this song.

I am not down.

Also, why has Anaconda been getting backlash since day one, but people are falling all over a video that contains J.Lo rolling around in what I can only assume is lube or honey with a very low viscosity? Vogue just said this was the “era of the big booty,” so why is a video that is heavy on big booty getting all kinds of crap about being unacceptable and crude? Is it because J.Lo and Iggy have butts with a Vogue stamp of approval? Is it because their butts are only slightly more voluptuous than average and therefore don’t pose a threat to the various Zumba and Pilates instructors of America?

For Mark Reilly, back in the fold of the McMaster men’s soccer team after a year away, it’s good to be home.

The striker has found the net six times in nine games this season, helping his side to third in the OUA West standings, with a game in hand on second-placed Guelph, and two on runaway leaders York.

They face McMaster this weekend in a six-pointer having now won nine games on the bounce.

Reilly is enjoying his return to university soccer, after a year working as a kinesiologist.

“I’ve returned home. I love playing with these guys. We know how each other play on the field and have a blast off the field as well,” said Reilly.

He was quick to credit his fine run of form to the efforts of his fellow players.

“Scoring feels great, but I’m just the last one to touch the ball, my teammates create all the opportunities and without them I wouldn’t notch any goals. I owe them a lot,” said the Hamilton native.

But Reilly’s 12-month hiatus from the Marauder program was not always easy. The striker could be found in the stands and on the sidelines for many games as Mac looked to continue their run of raising championship banners.

“Watching the boys play from the stands was enjoyable.

They played excellently and finished second in the table. They were a little unfortunate to fall out of the playoffs early last year, and really stung me. I wanted to be out there and help them win that OUA title for the fourth time in five years,” said Reilly.

had a great bunch of guys travel to Russia and we performed very well, losing to Russia in the quarterfinals. Playing in front of 10,000 people that day gave me the chills, and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything,” said Reilly.

Mac have made a convincing showing so far in their push for the OUA title, winning six games and drawing two others, suffering just one defeat in a tight game away to neighbouring Guelph.

Reilly and his teammates are targeting big things this season, and hope of silverware could be in the offing. “Medalling at Nationals is the top of our list this year. With the OUA having two berths, reaching the OUA finals will give us a chance to play in the CIS National Championships.

Mac stumbled in their efforts to regain the Blackwood trophy last weekend with the loss at Guelph, but beat Waterloo 3-1 at Ron Joyce Stadium to set up an exciting second half of the OUA season.

They face York at home this Sunday, Oct. 5 in a fixture crucial to their hopes of gaining top spot.

Gabe “the Babe” Ghiglione When it comes to being a member of a highly competitive varsity sports team, Gabe Ghiglione is unconventional.

Two years ago, Gabe Ghiglione was devastated when he got the news that he didn’t make the Marauders cross country team.

After time trial, Ghiglione waited all night to find out if he made the team through an email that the coaches sent out to all of the athletes that tried out.

Around midnight, after hours of anticipation, he received an email from head coach Rory Sneyd letting him know that he would not be on the roster.

“I was crushed,” said Ghiglione. “I was thinking of quitting running all together.”

But with track tryouts just a couple of weeks after the cross country time trial, Ghiglione decided to give running one last shot to test his limits and see what he was capable of achieving.

“I ran a 1500 metre by myself, and it sucked. It was absolutely horrible, because the standard was 4:15, and I ran a 4:16,” said Ghiglione.

After the tryout, Ghiglione went up and talked to track head coach Paula Schnurr, who was hesitant about letting him on the team.

“She said ‘we’ll see, we’ll send you an email tonight,’ and I was thinking they better not say no this time.”

His Involvement

Ghiglione waited by his computer, similar to how he did just two weeks before, but unlike last time, the email told him that he was on the team.

Fast forward to two years later, and Ghiglione is not only one of the fastest runners on the team, but he is one of the fastest runners in the entire country.

His success in the sport is due to his dedication to running that has stayed consistent since he has arrived to McMaster.

His dedication to his sport is also seen in some of the other activities he is involved in with the school – like the fraternity on campus, Phi Delta Theta, and his involvement as President of the ALS society.

“I’m the philanthropy chairman at Phi Delta Theta, so I’m

in charge of all of the philanthropy events and volunteering events, and different things that we do on and off campus,” said Ghiglione.

“I joined the fraternity because I saw the state that the organization was in before I joined, and I took it and I’ve been building it up, and I really like how its represented on campus.”

“We’re known as the gentlemen on campus, so that’s pretty cool.”

On top of being a member of Phi Delta Theta, Ghiglione is also President of the ALS society here at McMaster, he teaches kayaking lessons with the outdoor club, and he has also been an instructor of the McMaster White Water rafting club.

His involvement with several activities around the school separates him from the majority of the runners on the team and throughout the country, who usually just stick to school and training, because their time is extremely limited.

“It’s not like they’re missing out on their university experience, I’m just having a different one than them,” said Ghiglione.

There are other athletes on the cross country team who also happened to be very involved with the school, including Maddy McDonald, Paul Kolb, Chelsea Mackinnon, and Luke Charbonneau.

Overall, the cross country team is easily one of the most involved varsity teams at McMaster.

When it comes to training, however, the majority of runners take it very seriously, and that is where Ghiglione differs from the rest of the pack.

“All of last summer I worked as a rickshaw driver in downtown Toronto, and I called that training, so in that sense

I have alternative ways of training compared to the rest of the team,” said Ghiglione.

“I’d be running around the track last year and Coach Schnurr would be yelling, ‘run you crazy rickshaw driver,’ that was her joke.”

During that week, Ghiglione and teammate Paul Kolb had to wake up at five in the morning in order to run for 80 minutes, before an entire day of canoeing and portaging.

“We had one run where we were bush-whacking the entire way, because we were in the interior of Algonquin. And when Paul and I are on a run, we’re both really distracted trainers, so we’d just go take a bizarre offtrail, or just stop to jump off a cliff or something, and we’d get lost usually,” said Ghiglione.

His summer training methods would shock any serious runner who would have a very different definition of what constitutes as training.

“In this one run--that we counted as a run--our group was doing a 1.6k portage, so Paul and I ran up with the canoes on our backs, dropped them off, then ran back, helped the rest of the crew and continued packing, and we just ran back and forth with the packs, and we were like, ah, that counts as a run, right?”

His social life

Aside from Ghiglione’s differences in training, he also prides himself on getting to know as many people as he possibly can – which is a concept that can be difficult when being a part of a varsity team that generally does everything together.

“A lot of runners tend to stick with their one group, but I really like expanding my social circles and having a lot of friends on campus,” said Ghiglione.

Despite Ghiglione’s busy lifestyle, the social aspect in university is extremely important to him, and he believes it as being something that is essential.

“I think it’s important to chill sometimes, and not constantly be thinking

about running. Having fun is important for the human brain, you need to do it,” said Ghiglione.

Ghiglione’s involvement in several social circles around campus has made him a very popular person with a popular nick name – “Gabe the babe,” which has stuck with him throughout high school, has followed him in university, and is now rippling throughout the CIS, as seen in the blog “Putdowns & Prognostications,” which includes CIS cross country predictions.

Although Ghiglione is laid back in many ways, when it comes to the competition and the future of his running career, he has very serious goals.

“My goal for this year is to hopefully be an all-Canadian at CIS. Top 14 would be All-Canadian, but if I came top 20, I’d be very happy with that too.”

With Ghiglione’s dedication and drive, finishing within the top 14 overall is a very reachable goal.

In order for him to do this, he has made some big decisions in the past year, and has made a conscious effort to make running his main focus.

“I decided to work in Hamilton this summer, because I wanted to train with the team, and that was a big decision for me, because two summers ago I worked in the Ottawa River as a white water rafting instructor, and there was no way for me to get training done there,” said Ghiglione.

Ghiglione worked at Altitude, the climbing tower on campus, and he worked as a wilderness instructor at a summer camp in the Hamilton area as well.

A job like that in the Hamilton area has allowed the coaches to remain in close contact with him and for him to get a solid summer of training in before the cross country season.

As for his other interests – which includes eventually returning to his summer job as a white water rafting instructor – Ghiglione knows that the option will be there for him after his running career is over.

“I can just do all of that stuff later.”

“Right now, if I’m still doing this running thing, I might as well do it well.”

Both men’s and women’s soccer went to Guelph. The men suffered their first loss on Saturday in a 2-1 effort as Mark Reilly scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season with the hope of a comeback in the 77th minute.

Sunday’s game at McMaster fared much better in a 3-1 victory over Waterloo with a convincing second half featuring goals at the 65th, 79th, and 80th minute marks. They slip to third with a 6-1-2 record in the West OUA division.

The women lost the lead late in a 1-1 draw with midfielder Maureen Mai having an unrelenting offensive attack with the team’s lone goal, and five shots with three of those on target. A 74th-minute strike by Guelph resulted in the draw.

The return back to McMaster did not fare better as the team was not able to complete the comeback, losing 4-3 to Waterloo. An explosive start to the second half to put Waterloo up 4-1 was nearly nullified with two late-game goals, but it was too little, too late. They slip to sixth with a 3-5-1 record, and travel with the men’s team to face Brock next.

Men’s rugby improved to 5-0 while handing Queen’s their first loss of the season in an 18-13 game. The team was able to respond quickly to offensive pressure in an extremely backand-forth effort by both teams.

With their 18 points, the Marauders surpassed the total of

17 that Queen’s had conceded through their first four games of the season.

McMaster travels to face Brock next.

Women’s rugby gave up a 17-point lead to draw against Guelph 27-27. With McMaster captain Cindy Nelles in the penalty box, Guelph capitalized with two tries and one hit convert to make it 27-22.

In the dying moments of the game, Guelph made the try, but the potentially game-winning convert hit the upright and bounced wide. The team faces Toronto next at McMaster’s Back Ten field.

Men’s cross country carried their first place finish at the Western Invitational meet over to the Windsor open, where Blair Morgan finished first overall, Paul Rochus finished 5th, Paul Kolb finished in 8 th place, Derek Van Schepen finished in 9th, Nick Kondrat finished in 13th.

Women’s cross country finished second overall at the Windsor Open. Maddy Mcdonald led the pack, finishing second overall, Erin Mawhinney finished 7th, Maddy Benjamin finished 8th, Gabrielle Foran finished 9th and Phoebe Csersneyes finished in 11th.

The team will travel to Waterloo next weekend to compete in the Waterloo Invitational, where the majority of the team will get to compete, before the more competitive Queen’s Invitational the following weekend.

Football to fade into mediocrity?

With rival schools spending exorbitant amounts of money, Mac football stands at a crossroads Scott Hastie Sports Editor @scott1hastie

McMaster football is 5-0 heading into a match-up with No. 3 ranked Western Mustangs.

These are the glory days for the Marauder program, where student and alumni have come to expect the team to be in contention for the Yates Cup year in and year out.

These are the glory days, so enjoy them while you can, because it is not built to last.

It is no fault of Mac’s, nor are they alone in their fate. The CIS football scene has become a financial arms race, and only a handful of schools have the firepower to be successful long-term. Laval is the poster program for the new wave of football funding and their success has not gone unnoticed.

Carleton is right there with them, building a program off the wallet of keen alumni and local fans. Guelph has Stu Lang serving as their head coach and, more importantly, the person

signing the majority of cheques that fund the program.

The athletic department knows this, and that is why the 13th man program was launched. The call for collective financial support in the neighbourhood of $200,000 – the number given in the initial release of the campaign – has not been answered. Former athletic director Jeff Giles told the Hamilton Spectator in June that the program is off to a sluggish start.

Other, much less successful programs are already feeling that squeeze. Canada Football Chat, a site dedicated to coverage of the amateur Canadian football scene, reported that three independent sources informed them there is a “strong chance the Waterloo football program will be folding after the 2014 season.” Waterloo athletic director Roly Webster denied the report, but did say “if we can’t justify our investment, I’d say (folding a team) is absolutely a consideration. I’d be lying if I said it’s not.”

The cost to justify invest-

ment is increasingly rising, depending on your justification.

For Waterloo, a team that is 0-5 with 275 points against and only 21 points for, they may define success by making OUA playoffs. At McMaster, a different standard has been set.

The Marauders are in the race for the Yates with eyes on the Vanier, or the fan base becomes indifferent. Look at last season, where stands were empty after a less-than-stellar start to the season.

CIS football has been a league of haves and have-nots for a long time. As the price competing trends towards million dollar budgets, the list of haves is going the shrink.

McMaster is one of the teams who could be switching sides, along with many other perennial powers like Laurier and Queen’s.

Solutions are bleak, too. The CIS could mandate some kind of spending cap, but that would require policing and resources that the governing body does not have.

Do not expect Mac to

reach the lows of programs like Toronto, York or Waterloo. The coaching staff is too diligent for that to happen, and there are only so many roster spots on those other rich programs.

But a regression is in the cards unless alumni and corporate sponsors are willing to take out theirs.

I was skeptical about the deliciousness of pineapple on a burger; however, this one pleasantly surprised me. The sweet and sour flavor of the pineapple, on top of cheddar, bacon, and ranch, added another dimension to the burger. At times, the pineapple was a bit overwhelming if it was a bite without a lot of other toppings, but for the most part, this burger satisfied my craving. Honourary mention also goes to The Ship for the best fries on this list.

As one of the few food trucks at the homecoming expo, it’s understandable that the vendor was overwhelmed. That doesn’t really account for the one hour wait time and the lack of tomatoes on my mediocre burger.

The bun had potential, but wasn’t toasted and was too big for the patty. The patty itself was too charred and on the tough side. The ingredients for a good burger were present, but the execution was subpar given how much time they had to prepare the burger.

The gourmet burger bar features different kinds of meat with intricate chef-inspired toppings.

The Chipotle & Cheddar is an angus beef burger stuffed with chipotle peppers and cheddar, and topped with Vindaloo mayo, Chipotle mustard, cucumber, sprouts & pea tenders.

The Vindaloo gave the burger dimension, but ultimately, the beef wasn’t as good as it had been in my previous visits.

Overall, the surprising combination of vegetables mixed with a little bit of a sweet-spicy tang to it made it worth the while.

Despite being a chain, The Works has the charm of a local staple. The Jackson Square location boasts a temporary menu, here until Oct. 5. The menu called “Get Stuff ’d” features a variety of stuffed burgers including “Hot Magma” with jalapeños, banana peppers, and chipotle stuffed inside a beef burger topped with cream cheese, banana peppers, green onions, sriracha mayo, and an onion ring. The spicy kick isn’t overwhelming and everything in this burger is just perfect.

Order: Double Cheeseburger with double cheese ($8.50)

Hidden in the corner of Westdale, this micro-diner offers the best bang for your buck. There’s something deeply satisfying about a well done traditional burger with a fresh classic bun.

There weren’t enough sautéed mushrooms and the wait time was long considering my friends and I were the only people there. Though not the best burger by any means, the nice atmosphere and friendly cashier made the experience quite enjoyable.

When Pinks opened last year, it quickly became a Mac staple due to its proximity to campus and its diner vibe. While the burger was cooked well, with the cheese between the patties melted to gooey perfection, the burger overall lacked a punch.

Pink sauce (thankfully not actually pink), is a nice touch, but its subtle flavour is easily overwhelmed if your burger also has toppings with strong flavours like jalapenos.

Do gender norms affect our health?

On Sept. 20, 2014, actress and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson gave a speech at the New York UN headquarters discussing the new HeForShe campaign.

HeForShe is a “solidarity movement for gender equality that brings together one half of humanity in support of the other of humanity, for the entirety of humanity.” In her speech Watson argued that in order for women’s rights to be taken seriously, society needs to start tackling male issues that seem to be underlying causes.

In her words, “it is time that we all start to perceive gender on a spectrum, instead of as sets of opposing ideals.”

Despite the initial positive responses and its big splash on social media, critics have found flaws with Watson’s argument.

Mainly, it is argued that the type of feminism she is supporting is too “watered-down” and “mainstream” to have an actual effect.

While it may not have been a perfect speech, it did bring up an interesting point: how do our prescribed gender roles affect

us and others in ways we do not necessarily think about?

Globally, we see examples of how gender norms and values are negatively affecting our health. In various parts of the world women are unable able to get to clinics because they are not allowed to travel alone.

Teenage boys die in accidents because they are expected to be “bold” risk-takers. Women contract HIV because societal standards encourage a husband’s promiscuity, while preventing women from insisting on condom use. Generally, a country’s lung cancer mortality rate is much higher for men, because smoking is considered an attractive marker for masculinity while it is frowned upon for women.

Evident in these examples is that the gender issues in healthcare are not restricted to developing countries. As Watson reminded us in her speech, there is not one country in the world that can currently claim women and men are given equal rights. It can be easy for us as Canadians to forget about this, as it seems strange for a developed country to lack something as basic as equality for

all citizens. Also evident from these examples is that gender norms do not exclusively affect women; societal expectations of men can also negatively impact their health.

The WHO Gender and Health Department’s goal is to “increase health care professionals’ awareness of the role of gender norms, values, and inequality in perpetuating disease, disability, and death, and to promote societal change with a view to eliminating gender as a barrier to good health.” While it is great that a global organization is attempting to solve these problems, it is up to us to start making actual change. Emma Watson’s address may have its flaws, but there were certainly aspects of it that should make us reflect on how we perceive both others and ourselves.

Are there certain expectations that we have that may not be conducive to promoting gender equality?

Love it or hate it, Watson’s speech should make us think about how we might want to change our gender norms – not only because it’s the equitable thing to do, but also because it’s the healthier choice.

It has recently come to my attention that there is a terrible infestation in the McMaster hallways. A mob of them lurks in the shadows, scanning the crowds of students, patiently awaiting it’s next hurried victim.

What kind of creature is this, you ask? Its blood thirst rivals that of a shark; it’s more ruthless than an anaconda, and sneakier than a raccoon. It’s the slow walker. This horrid creature tends only to reveal itself when you’re in a rush and already late for your next class. There are many of these creatures disguised as regular-speed students, and they choose to inhabit the parts of campus with the most traffic.

My most recent encounter with a slow walker happened two days ago while I was unsuc-

cessfully trying to get to tutorial on time. I was zipping through the student center, doing my best to weave my way through the throngs of students, when all of a sudden I was stopped dead in my tracks by a group of three girls walking slower than slugs. I tried to dip left, then tried to veer right, but there was no getting past these zombie walkers. My urgent stress about being late for class didn’t seem to cross their minds as they took their delicate stroll through the student center that day as if they didn’t have a care in the world.

Some of these monsters are separated from the pack, but these are even more dangerous.

They pull out their phones, trying to find their way back to their pack. In their desperation, they abandon any pretense of a reasonable field of vision.

They’ll walk into you, stop, or

pull a 180-degree turn. Individually, these creepers are even more unpredictable. What Mac needs is a slow walker lane, just like the ones that have recently popped up in Shanghai.

These slow walkers who have taken up residence within the walls of our school need to be stopped. Don’t let their apparent innocence trick you, and never let your guard down.

The only way to anticipate a slow-walker attack is to keep your eyes peeled and your pace brisk. Go to a parkour lesson and take notes from the chase scenes in the Bourne movies.

Get pumped listening to Ludacris’ “Move B**ch”. The chase is on. Get outta the way.

I used to be under the impression that the love of my life would be standing beside a keg waiting to fill my red solo cup with swamp water beer.

He’d notice me although I was merely one in a sea of a thousand girls jammed into a tiny backyard.

He’d stop getting “turnt” so he could actually remember my name the next morning, and text me although I refused to give up the goods on the first night. But if you’re looking for true love beside the keg, you’re probably looking in the wrong place. Red Solo Cups are called “Solo” for a reason.

Finding true love at keggers is nearly impossible.

Number one, it’s a kegger. The lighting is dark, the place is too crowded, the floor is sticky, and some girl just spilt her birthday cake vodka all over your DIY crop top. Romantic, right?

The first disadvantage is noise. I’ve tried holding substantial conversations with members of the opposite sex at keggers, and it proves to be a strenuous task. The EDM blaring in the background makes it impossible to block out the “unst” no matter how hard you try. Every so often the guy you’re talking to yells, “yo bro what’s up?” to guys passing by and they stop to engage in ritualistic manly greetings. Your vocals are in constant strain as you yell into his face, praying to god that you don’t spit.

The second disadvantage is environment. Keggers can be dark, dingy, and downright unflattering. Everyone is sweaty, and you constantly feel like throwing your elbows up to defend yourself from the shuffling crowds. It is hard to select a mate when you feel like everyone there has groped you.

Not to mention, you feel like you have been cast into a pit of hungry vipers all waiting for the right girl to fall into their lap so they can take a bite. And the smell—yikes.

The third disadvantage is motives while drunk.

I don’t want to make grotesque generalizations, but a lot of the men I’ve encountered at keggers aren’t thinking about taking me home to meet their mom, and vice versa. We’re just simply not interested in considering the person we meet at a kegger as a potential serious partner; they only seem like a temporary distraction that will keep us amused for the night. The environment is too causal and crazy, the people are too drunk, the beer too gross, and the smell too bad to take anything, let alone a potential partner, seriously. We’d rather return to the line to fill up our cup than continue talking to the person whose face we’ve spent the last ten minutes trying to decipher.

We’re drunk, our perception is skewed, and the last thing on our mind is a dinner date and movie.

Save yourself the trouble and try the grocery store.

The beginner’s guide to a bright lip Four lipstick essentials to start your makeup collection

On snooze button days, I find it fun to draw attention away from puffy eyes and messy hair with a bright lip. I never really wore makeup in high school—I borrowed my mom’s mascara every now and again but I didn’t really know what was going on. I just remember reading an article about darker skin tones and bright lips and thinking that I could maybe do that.

So, I went to Shoppers, bought a cherry red and a dark plum colour and just kind of winged it. I looked like a monster, but looking like a clown inspired me to look into beauty blogs to know what I was doing.

A current favourite of mine is actually “Morange”, a bright orange from M.A.C. It’s borderline obnoxious, but having a darker skin tone makes it easier to pull off. It goes on super easy but needs a bit of time to set properly. It smells like vanilla and can last through a coffee date, though.

Sephora $24 Bite is an organic lipstick brand based in Toronto. I love their darker shades of colours, particularly the wine shades. The dramatic colour is beautiful and makes a statement, without seeming overdone. The lipstick slides on nicely and has a pleasant fruity smell, which makes it a winner for regular wear.

You can never go wrong with a classic red; the colour is so beautiful and rich. While this particular brand needs to be reapplied every so often, its stand-out look and all-natural ingredients make it worth the cost. zuiiorganic.com $29.95

Although I am a relative newcomer to the world of lipstick, there are a few qualities I look for in every tube I purchase. My Mediterranean heritage guarantees that some colours look spectacularly odd on me, so colour is particularly important. I love all shades of reds and pinks, but tend to shy away from oranges that clash with the olive undertones in my skin. I also actively seek out lipstick without harsh chemicals, that are made with organic ingredients, and that aren’t tested on animals to appeal to my own social conscience. High quality products that go on smoothly and stay on relatively long are always part of the testing process.

This list doesn’t make for a cheap lipstick buy and certainly contradicts my tight student budget, so I buy less, but buy well!

Daniel Caesar Praise Break

Toronto is proving to be a veritable hotbed for developing singing talent that reflects the dark, grimy nature of city life. Daniel Caesar’s latest EP, Praise Break, comes on the heels of his first precocious offering, Birds of Paradise, released in January. Uncontent with lounging about, Caesar hopped right back into the studio with producers Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett, who worked with Drake on “Pound Cake.”

Unlike Abel Tesfaye who preferred to linger under the contrived auspices of obscurity as The Weeknd, Caesar is vocal on Twitter in endearing, non-cryptic fashion.

When I arrived at Jackson Square for the Sunday afternoon screening of Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, I noticed the average age of cinema-goers to be around 105. Jokes aside, the audience was full of mature people, and for good reason; impatient adolescents wouldn’t have been able to sit through the almost three-hour film despite how much the film pulls from their own lives.

As a fan of Richard Linklater’s prior work with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpu on the Before series and having read the glowing reviews for Boyhood, I knew to expect a compelling film but I was in no way prepared for the amount that it would resonate with me.

The film was shot over 12 years with the same actors resuming their roles for one intense week of filming each year. Ellar Coltrane takes up the titular role as Mason Evans Jr., with Linklater’s daughter, Lorelei, playing Mason’s sister, Samantha. The pair is watched over by their mother, Olivia, played exquisitely by Patricia Arquette, and on occasion by their absentee father, Mason Sr., played by Hawke.

Always an experimental director, Linklater has succeeded

in crafting the magnum opus that he will be remembered for.

While Dazed and Confused and School of Rock are masterpieces in their own right, Boyhood is epic in scope and subject matter with Linklater adopting a much more somber tone in looking at the tumultuous nature of growing up in a broken home.

Unlike any of the predominantly improvised Before movies, Boyhood is scripted but there is an air of spontaneity to the delivery of the snappy dialogue which alone makes one want to both laugh and cry in equal measure. Much of that could be due to the fact that Linklater pieced the script together as he went along and didn’t share it in its entirety with the cast, instead electing to only give them their respective lines.

The chemistry between the two children and with their mother is impressive from the start and only gets better with time.

While familial tension and growing up has always had a place in films, it isn’t done right very often. On one end of the spectrum, it can be dealt with too lightly, like in Cheaper by the Dozen. On the other, it can be grimly presented in a heavyhanded way, like in Terrence Malick’s very good but selfserious Tree of Life.

Boyhood succeeds in presenting both sides of the coin. The slew of drunken

deadbeat men the mother attracts while she works her way through a masters degree can weigh you down, especially if your experience has been similar. But Ethan Hawke always appears in time to relieve the tension and is a pretty constant figure in their lives. It can be tempting to see the fun that the children have with their father and put him on a pedestal, but Linklater does a good job of revealing the frustration that the two sometimes harbor for him.

Despite the added pressure that comes with single parenting, Olivia manages to be lighthearted in her own fashion.

Unwary of befouling her children’s minds, she is liberal in her use of obscenities. Mason Sr.’s banter with Olivia’s mother is another bit of comic relief that works really well without discounting their personal struggles.

It is impossible to concisely dilute the emotional breadth of the film because everyone will take away something different from it. In honing in on the largely banal life of an American boy, Linklater serves up something brilliant that will cater to everyone.

You’ll find a bit of yourself in every character, and be reminded to treat your own family better. And that’s all that matters.

Exhibit Review: Graham Todd lives on A sculpture by the late Graham Todd currently on display on the fourth floor gallery of the McMaster Museum of Arts C/O ELIZA POPE

Among the five new exhibits at the McMaster Museum of Art is that of artist and McMaster professor Graham Todd. The professor’s work can be found in private and public collections in places such as

Spain, Mexico and the United States. Unfortunately, Graham Todd passed away in June 2013, leaving his story behind in the form of his sculptures.

Sculpting was to Graham what the written word is to authors – a method of storytelling. His mastery of several different media - from

clay to bronze to ceramic – is evident in each of his multimedia pieces. Despite the fact that he incorporates several different surfaces into his work, it is through other methods that he is able to bring the elements together and create a cohesive unit. The repetition of colour is a big component

of his art, as he uses a limited selection of hues per piece.

Typically, his pieces include a few warm colours such as reds and oranges, but are primarily dominated by cool purples, blues and greens. His shades of choice tend to be muted, giving his pieces an overall weathered look. This results in artwork that looks earthy and natural, so much so that you are given the impression that it could be a relic discovered under heaps of rubble.

From piece to piece, what struck me most was Todd’s use of movement. It astonishes me that a piece that is solid and unmoving can inspire a sense of fluidity and motion, as do Todd’s pieces. One piece in particular, Recent Memories (1983), consists of a marble shape resembling a cornucopia.

The numerous curved, tightly packed lines on the side of the piece to draw the viewer’s eye from the tip of the cone to the end, giving the stationary object movement. This same piece is one of Todd’s most vibrant, consisting of hues of bright pinks, blues and reds.

Furthermore, his installations often consist of irregularly shaped forms stacked upon each other, often at precarious angles that threaten to tip over. Similar to the cornucopia, the viewer’s

eye runs over these impressive sculptures, starting from the base, following along the line of the sculpture and culminating at the tip.

Another impressive set of sculptures is Todd’s twin pieces Sphere/Sombra (2008) and Sphere/Sunrise (2008).

They are both spherical in nature and both have a similar surface texture that resembles snakeskin. However, the colour of each differs greatly, with Sombra using dusty purples and browns, and Sunrise consisting of oranges and yellow. This use of complementary colours creates juxtaposition between otherwise similar forms.

Interestingly enough, these two pieces are stationed on the same length of table, but are separated by five other sculptures. Their distance is intriguing, given their obvious correlation.

These mentioned installations are merely a scratch at the surface of the beauty of Todd Graham’s exhibit, and I strongly encourage those who have a free moment to give it a visit. It is, all in all, an impressive collection that honours a man whose artistic genius lives on in his work.

The Roommate I feel so bad for the CA responsible for the students in this movie. The paperwork for “stalking and attempted murder” is the real crime here.

Sleepaway Camp Bad acting, weird sporadic backstory, zero special effects budget, all of which leave the viewer woefully unprepared for the baffling, shocking, disturbing final scene. Then again, there’s probably just no bracing for something like that. Accept your fate.

Children of the Corn “Oh haha how did that get in there?” – The director reacting (probably) to us asking why he added a barely-legal sex scene that wasn’t originally in the book. “Oops.”

Dead Calm If your busy schedule doesn’t allow you to watch this entire film, just YouTube the ending scene. But there’s a young Nicole Kidman in it, just sayin’.

ALBUM REVIEWS Julian Casablancas + The Voidz - Tyranny Michael Nisiak Contributor

It has been five years since Julian Casablancas released Phrazes of the Young, his first album independent of his work with The Strokes. Now comes another non-Strokes album called Tyranny with his new band Julian Casablancas + The Voidz.

Before its release, Julian Casablancas stated that his intention with Tyranny was to experiment with the space between genres that hasn’t been experimented with. Unfortunately, he didn’t mention

anything about trying to make the songs listenable.

The album sets the tone with the first song “Take Me in your Army,” whose dissonant sounds seem to aim at making the listener feel as uncomfortable as possible. Right off the bat, it’s difficult to hear any of Casablancas’ vocals over all the sound. It’s very likely that he’s not actually singing words during the verses.

Luckily, the song “Human Sadness” picks up some of the pieces with its catchy melody and a steady buildup that somehow manages to keep it interesting throughout the entire

11 minutes.

This pattern continues for the entire album. Some songs sound like a cacophonous wall of noise, perhaps a result of being overly ambitious with trying to create a new sound.

Fortunately, these wall of noise songs are always followed by more polished songs that sound like they were actually written earlier than the day the album was recorded.

Overall, maybe half of the album is enjoyable and the other half is a bit over the top. But it definitely fulfilled its purpose of experimenting. It’s just that the album doesn’t quite form a

cohesive whole. The way the tone jumps all over the place makes it seem like Tyranny was stitched together by a tailor’s apprentice.

If you have more eclectic taste and you’re interested in getting Tyranny, it does comes on a neat USB stick that’s also a lighter on the other end. Which is great, because if you don’t like the album then you’ll at least The Verdict have a $22 lighter.

The Drums - Encyclopedia Rachel Katz Contributor

Jarring is a word not often attributed to music, but that’s the most accurate way to describe The Drums’ new album Encyclopedia. At times beautiful and soft, at others harsh and disjointed, the band’s third album is a confusing whirlwind of lush, layered sounds.

But that’s not inherently bad.

With Encyclopedia, Jonny Pierce and Jacob Graham continue to do what The Drums excel at: telling the truth. And,

as heard in “Bell Laboratories,” the truth isn’t always pretty. The cacophony of sounds used in some of the tracks helps convey the band’s darker feelings and experiences.

That said, there are soothing, vulnerable tracks on the album that help ground the dizzying sounds of “Magic Mountain.” “Break My Heart” and “There Is Nothing Left” contrast the harsher songs on the record with their softer melodies and more traditional pop ballad sound.

My issue with the album is the lack of segues. The band

does so many different things with the record that the added jolt from a disjointed song to a mellow one with nothing to ease the transition makes it difficult to focus on the music.

The Drums have created a world within Encyclopedia. The silence that follows the end of the album’s lush sounds feels stifling. The record ends with “Wild Geese,” a haunting track that some may consider a weak ending, but actually acts as a bridge that eases us back into the real world.

The duo made a piece of statement art rather than a

traditional album.

The raw sounds on some of the tracks connected with me in a way that music often falls short of doing. Is it my favourite album of the year? No. But it is powerful, and if you listen closely, you might just lose yourself in Encyclopedia.

and basslines to the front of the listeners mind, making sure to remove any distracting production choices that detract from the songs roots.

Unfortunately, this transition in sound works for and against Caribou. On one hand, by channeling a crisper, clearer sound, Caribou helps to create a more accessible listening experience. Unfortunately, some of the energy of his last works gets lost during this process.

For those that liked the grit and unpredictability of Swim you may be a little disappointed.

Still, Caribou’s distinct formula for making exciting electronic continues to exist across all his records, and the positive qualities of previous efforts continue to carry through to his work on Our Love.

Overall, despite the few stylistic “mistakes” Our Love may make, the album is enjoyable from start to finish. Tracks like “Dive” channel the stylings of Canadian electronic artist Purity Ring, while the title track immediately pulls the listener in with its full-bodied bass.

Edgy, booming and different, Our Love proves Caribou understands everything you need to make a good record.

Veteran Canadian composer and Dundas native Caribou a.k.a. Daniel Victor Snaith is back with a new full-length album Our Love. The album showcases the experience he’s gained from over a decade of songwriting and six full album releases to date, while maintaining the groove and danceability that characterize his success in the past few years.

Right from the start Our Love expertly shows off Snaith’s knowledge of what gets a person moving. Most, if not all of the tracks feature a combination of loops, samples and dreamy vocals that - knowingly or unknowingly - get the listen-

er’s head bobbing. Much like Caribou’s last release Swim, Our Love retains all the elements that make Caribou so compelling. The melodies are strong, the production is crisp, creating each track creates a cohesive listening experience as you make your way through the album.

For fans of the last record, many familiar sounds are present, making it easy to jump right in.

Despite these similarities, Our Love still reflects the growth Caribou has seen as an artist. Where Swim was a random sometimes jarring combination of off-beat samples, Our Love brings things back to basics, cleaning up some of the harsh edges that defined his earlier works. This helps to bring the stronger aspects of his works, like the melodies

Time of the season R&B artist and Calgary native Samuel Aband− also known as Beach Season− opens up about his latest EP, Internet Evening.

Your mother had a hand in the making of Beach Season, from when she forced you into piano lessons as a kid. Are you thankful that she pushed you down that path? I understand you were a bit resentful of the piano at first and switched to drums, figuring they were cooler.

I’m just glad to have been fortunate enough to be able to take lessons for an instrument in general. My mother always thought that learning an instrument would be good for my general learning, focus and coordination. I’m happy now that I did the lessons because it set the foundation for a future I want to pursue.

How long after taking those lessons did it take you to shift towards making music on your laptop, and what was the goal when you did?

I started piano when I was 8 and switch to drums at 13, and Simon and I started the whole producing thing when we were 16 or 17. There was no goal back then, it was just a fun hobby that no one we knew was doing.

Simon Blitzer has been a part of Beach Season for a while now. What is his role in the duo now, and is it any different from the one he played when he was rapping over your more hip-hop inspired tracks?

Simon and I had Obey The Crooks together and Beach Season has always been my solo project. Right now he also has his own solo project called Sadd Ghost. Recently we dissolved Obey The Crooks and are just working together under our separate monikers. He’s always been my right hand dude and we’ve always done shows together and helped each other write and produce. On stage he handles the effects, live instru-

mentation and some mixing.

What is the scene like in Calgary? Is there a wide appetite for the music you’re making?

From my personal experience the scene here is pretty much just a big friend group of people that like to party, if you’re a regular to shows around town you’re most likely going to run into the same friends you met at the last shindig. It’s nice in that sense, because you really make a connection through music and art with lots of like-minded people. From the people I know as well, everyone is hungry for more, which is cool. As soon as a cool artist comes through for a show it blows up almost instantly because it’s a rare thing for us. People are really excited for shows, and that in turn helps us out a lot as emerging artists, because people are stoked that you’re working hard to raise the bar.

I’m ignorant about Calgary’s cultural attractions so I’ll be devil’s advocate and operate under the notion that there aren’t many. Does having few things to do for fun help you focus on your craft?

Recently we’ve been getting a lot more cool events, but still not as many as other larger cities in Canada. It makes it easy to focus though, so we can really hone in on creating and developing our sound. Which in turn makes traveling to other cities so much better because we get to play a show or two, party our asses off, then we get to come back home and chill out again.

How has dropping out of school changed your life?

Dropping out of school was scary and it still is, just because

of the fact that where we come from it’s the normal thing to do and there’s no one really to guide us into life without school. I’m not opposed to education at all and I think it’s a wonderful thing but it really didn’t do a lot for me. Dropping out definitely changed my perspective on what’s really important to me, and gave me a good vision of “the bigger picture”. I feel we’ve grown up a lot now that we’re just doing our own thing and on our own path. It’s taught us to be that much more independent, and we’ve learned a bit of what real life is like. It’s enlightening in a way as well because all we do is explore art and creativity within one another and internally.

Overall, dropping out taught me that the meaning of life is to experience, and so far that’s what we’ve been doing. I’ve experienced school, that was great, but now it’s time to

move on to bigger things.

Your EP, Internet Evening, has been well-received by the music press and you’re currently working on another release that will feature some of your friends and is projected to come out in early 2015. Is there anything from the latter going to be featured during the tour you’re about to embark upon?

Everything we’re playing is new and improved. Lots of the tracks we’re playing are brand new and have been up for debate to be on the project so maybe they will be featured on it and maybe they won’t. At the end of the day the project will consist of what feels right.

Are there any Canadian artists you see yourself collaborating with in the future?

Locally we want to get stuff go-

ing with Shaani Cage, SKVTR, Orthicon, Sanctums, Kline and Mayland. We’ve always dreamed of being able to one day collaborate with the OVO crew as well, who knows if it will ever happen. Also Grimes, Blue Hawaii/Braids, Lowell and Toro Y Moi are personal dream collaborations of mine.

I wouldn’t peg Hamilton’s Homegrown coffee shop as the typical place to see an act like you, but it sounds like it’ll be cool. What’s your favourite venue you’ve ever played in?

We had a flood here in 2013 while Sled Island was going on. Long story short, our show got cancelled so we decided to go check out this cool house show going on. We ended up playing on this guy’s balcony overlooking a street filled with people. To this day the coolest show experience I’ve ever had.

So in my opinion houses are the coolest venues.

A cultured festival of film and art is making its way to the steel city later this month, and Hamilton residents are furious.

“We’ve gone centuries without a shred of “art” or “culture” and we’re not about to start appreciating them now,” said one outraged Hamiltonian.

The festival is considering changing the destination after receiving numerous threats of undecency. “One man e-mailed us and basically said he would bring his entire dockyard retinue butt-naked if we so much as look at Hamilton,” said one festival organizer.

A McMaster professor is quickly learning that the teacher can sometimes become the teachee.

Professor Devon Lawkins, Associate Dean of the Faculty of General Studies, has come forward to publicly applaud the effort a student has displayed in his thrice-weekly Lecture Studies classes. “[Erik] has displayed a unsolicited amount of enthusiasm

for my curriculum,” said Lawkins.

“He will constantly nod along and made loud affirming noises when he agrees with many of my points.”

Erik Plereat, a student taking Lawkins’ class for the third consecutive term, is described by his classmates as “adequately overqualified” for the class.

“I don’t think I would know which of Dr. Lawkins’ talking points would be most interesting without Erik’s incessant amount of participation,” said Jennifer K., a classmate of Erik’s.

“Sometimes he will answer completely rhetorical questions just for an opportunity to raise his hand. That shows true dedication to his craft.”

Lawkins is certain that Plereat will take his class yet again once registration opens for the second semester.

“It just wouldn’t be the same class if it didn’t start with his unwarranted six-minute personal introduction,” said Lawkins. “People need to know just how entrenched he is in his own satisfaction. They just need to.”
