Students petition against University of Waterloo weather policy Students at UW were outraged the morning of Feb. 2 when they learned that classes would resume despite snow days being announced for schools across southern Ontario, including neighbouring Wilfred Laurier University and Conestoga College. Students took their frustrations and complaints online, and formed a Change.org petition demanding that the university re-evaluate their inclement weather policy. The petition quickly collected over 2,000 signatures that day.

UVic professor predicts catastrophic earthquake An Assistant Geophysics professor at UVic’s School of Earth and Ocean Sciences has warned of a magnitude 9.0 earthquake that will occur every 250-500 years.

On Jan. 29, the Women and Gender Equity Network successfully launched as an official MSU service. The group brought in keynote speakers who focused on trans* and gender-queer people; however, the WGEN aims to create a safer space for women and survivors of sexual assault as well.

“This is an essential service because these are topics that are not necessarily talked about in our mainstream media or even in our day-to-day interactions even though these problems are pervasive,” said coordinator Shanthiya Baheerathan.

She hopes that the WGEN will assist students in breaking down the gender identities society imposes and understand that these identities need not be a person’s defining characteristic.

“We want to bring in narratives that aren’t really talked about in society and in the media to make people really question and understand what gender means.”

Despite the recent launch, Baheerathan and the WGEN executive have been working on a variety of initiatives and have set high goals for their first year as a service.

“I think there’s a real thirst for this type of conversation and bringing in experts in the field to talk about it. I think people are becoming more familiar with the idea of what feminism is and I hope to provide students with the opportunity to talk about these issues,” Baheerathan said. “I hope to build a sense of community within the safer space and I hope to bring in women and trans* people and to provide them with the resources and space to feel validated in their experiences.” @RachAlbertaKatz

Four months of recruiting, two weeks of campaigning, five candidates, 8,858 total votes, and one MSU President.

The students have spoken: Ehima Osazuwa is the 2015-16 MSU President-Elect.

He can’t keep the tired smile off his face. “[I feel] emotionally exhausted, mentally exhausted, but I feel very happy obviously because we won. It’s still surreal.

I still don’t believe I won,” said Osazuwa.

Although it was a long two weeks of campaigning, the end of elections was the bittersweet coda to a much larger undertaking that spanned months.

On the night of the results, Osazuwa and his team were still in the Student Centre long after they had packed up their tables, huddled around computers, refreshing the MSU website and other social media outlets.

It took until 10 p.m., but Osazuwa finally received a call from current MSU President Teddy Saull. As soon as he received confirmation he had won, the Student Centre echoed with the cheers from his team as they celebrated their hardfought win.

“When we got the phone call, we all went nuts and everyone was so happy, we were crying, my whole team, everyone,” Osazuwa recalled.

After a night of celebration with his campaign team that lasted until 4 a.m., Osazuwa was back up at 8 a.m. The President-Elect took a walk around Les Prince, where he serves as a Community Advisor, and finally gave himself a chance to take a breather on his own to appreciate the moment.

“I was thinking, we put so much effort into this, [but] we just got to the start. For me and for my team this is just the beginning – winning was just the first step. I made promises to [20,000] undergraduate students and I intend on keeping my promises. They voted for me because they believe in my vision, and I need to make sure

I keep working hard for them.”

Following their initial celebrations, Osazuwa’s first calls were to his family; first to his two older brothers, both studying here in Canada, and then to his parents, who live in Nigeria, his home country. Due to the time difference of six hours, his parents were still sleeping, but when they returned his calls, they were more excited than he was.

“My dad was shouting, ‘I’m so proud of you! I’m so proud of you!’ because my family really got emotionally invested in this,” he said. “[My mother] kept liking the Facebook pictures, commenting and texting me, encouraging me to keep going, keep going [...] my dad was more laid back, but he was so happy.”

Osazuwa is the youngest of three boys, and was the last of his brothers to arrive in Canada when he came in September of 2009. He finished Grade 12 at Great Lakes College before deciding to come to McMaster, a decision he considers one of the best he’s ever made. The change in environment was a big transition for him, but Osazuwa is happy and grateful to be here.

“Canada is a second home to me, McMaster is like home to me now,” he explained.

“Good thing I didn’t go to Waterloo,” he joked.

Osazuwa’s campaign was one that certainly seemed to have drawn upon his experience of being in a new and unfamiliar place and culture. Unlike the platforms of his competitors, his unique focus centered around the accessibility and diversity of the campus, with the idea that students of different interests and cultures would be able to co-exist in a meaningful way.

Even with Osazuwa differentiating himself from the other candidates, during the two weeks it seemed like the race was wide open for any of the candidates to steal the spotlight.

But in the end, the students were overwhelmingly in Osazuwa’s favour; in the first round of votes, Osazuwa was up over his closest competitor by nearly a thousand votes. The final round of voting was a decisive margin of 4,298 votes for Osazuwa, to second-place candidate Tristan Paul’s 3,335 votes. In total, a record 8,858 votes were cast, representing 42.2 percent of the 20,977 eligible voters.

“My campaign managers, Kalia and Syed, my senior advisor, Salah, my whole campaign team, [they’re] all amazing people,” Osazuwa said. “When I was tired, they were like, ‘no, no, keep going, keep going.’ I really appreciated that.” “[They] always made sure I was on point. They made sure we were always ready.”

of a breather and catch up on school before he takes office on May 1. In the transitional months until then, he’ll be working closely with Saull and the Board of Directors, learning how to inherit the responsibility of his new obligation.

From Point A to “Point B” Two entrepreneurs launch crowd-funded transit for McMaster students Krista Schwab News Editor

An easier way to travel to special events is coming to McMaster, which could serve as an alternative to HSR and GO Transit services.

Two entrepreneurs have started a crowd-funded shuttle service that will connect students at McMaster to Toronto and other regions in Ontario.

“We want people to be able to explore different areas and see where the best places to eat, or the best places to go out for a night, or where the best events are in the city […] and then we want to help people get there,” said Brett Chang, co-founder of the new service called Point B. Chang and his partner Taylor Scollon, both graduates from the University of Toronto, founded this service in order to fill a need for affordable and convenient transit.

“It will be crowd-funded transit, so every week we will put up a new event or a new place to go, and if we can get enough people to ride the bus we will run the bus,” said Chang.

The first bus, tentatively scheduled to leave from McMaster on Feb. 6, would take students to downtown Toronto and bring them back to campus

the same night. The bus service will not only take students to the GTA – it is also going to be used to bring students to restaurants and events in Hamilton, or on day-trips to Blue Mountain or the Niagara region.

“We are still working on the details around that, we are still working with the different stakeholders involved,” Chang said.

Chang and Scollon first began offering transit that brought people in Toronto to Liberty Village, a service that is currently on hiatus.

“We did realize that running an ongoing public transit

service is difficult. You want to have a pretty big user base to do that so this is a good way for us to build up to there,” he said about beginning the service at McMaster.

Chang and Scollon will be focusing their efforts on expanding the service to McMaster, citing that there is a greater need for alternative transit in universities outside of Toronto.

“I think the problem is that there are a lot of universities in the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area which are built with inadequate transportation,” he said.

The 48-person bus to Toronto will cost $20 round-trip, which is less than the adult fare for the GO service, and it will pick students up on or near campus.

Prices will vary depending on the specific trip and the number of people who sign up for the bus.

“A lot of students struggle to really get outside, enjoy anywhere outside of campus,” said Chang.

“I think that you can find new alterative transit methods to show people different parts of the region, different parts of the province and go to different places, discover new things.”

The MacEngaged movement Psychology professor to start initative to encourage applied learning Krista Schwab News Editor

Students in the Faculty of Science can look forward to an improvement to the worn-out traditional lecture-style method of teaching and learning.

Ayesha Khan, a professor in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Behaviour, noticed a lack of applied courses in the science faculty.

Apart from lab work or the optional co-op program, students in the sciences, specifically the psychology program, are not given the opportunity to apply their knowledge and make an impact in their community.

“I think that there needs to be a movement on our part to give students both the academic content as well as experience and practical skills that could help them apply that content,” said Khan. “When you think of

really large enrolment classes, the traditional way of delivering final exam, midterm, one assignment […] we need to get a little bit more creative.”

With a grant from Forward With Integrity, Khan redesigned the Basic and Clinical Neuroscience course and created MacEngaged, an online platform designed to share her new classroom model with professors at McMaster as well as other universities.

Basic and Clinical Neuroscience would normally be taught in the traditional lecture style, but now requires students to apply neuroscience concepts by completing a project that will positively impact the community in some way. Students form groups and are assigned a peer-mentor to provide guidance through the course.

“Patrick Deane [has said] to the professors and instructors on campus – take risks. When your boss tells you that, to take risks, it gives you the push to

jump in the deep end with certain things,” Khan said about making the decision to redesign the course.

Khan hopes that integrating an applied course to the department will better prepare students for future employment.

“The kind of skills that you need to pitch in order to get a job are beyond what you’ve learned from an academic perspective,” she said.

Ahmed Al-Shafayeen, a third-year Biology student who took the class last year, is now a peer mentor for new students.

He did his community project on managing stress through mindfulness meditation.

Al-Shafayeen’s group wanted to make an impact both locally and globally. On a local scale, the group held a free meditation session for McMaster students and faculty. They also created a meditation app that provides on-the-go meditation sessions.

On a global scale, the

group wanted to provide free neuroscience education to students in Bangladesh.

“I grew up in Bangladesh – I moved here when I was 13.

I contacted my dad’s old school and they were very positive about it. I didn’t expect the response,” said Al-Shafayeen.

The group designed a video presentation that would teach elementary school students about neuroscience in a way they could understand. They also provided information about mindfulness and hosted a meditation session through video.

“A lot of schools are run by NGOs in third-world countries, those are free schools, and they’d be really receptive if we can send them videos,” he said.

Even though the class has ended, Al-Shafayeen plans on continuing his project.

“I feel very strongly about

education, especially thirdworld education, so building on that I want to start a student group where we can teach people in third-world countries from here,” he said. “I wouldn’t think about doing this a year ago, but now I know I can do it and people will be receptive to it.”

With the new MacEngaged website launching this month, professors will have access to resources and example projects to inspire the use of this model in other classrooms.

“The online website is really going to be a framework for other instructors on campus and beyond to incorporate something like MacEngaged,” said Khan. “I want to show people that you can do this in large enrolment classes.”

Happy National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, McMaster! I think it’s time we talk.

You see, eating disorders are an ugly problem especially prevalent among people our age, and we need to change that. One in ten people with anorexia will die due to suicide or medical complications within ten years of diagnosis. We all contribute to perpetuating society’s disordered relationship with food and exercise and we all have the responsibility to fix it.

There’s so much that you can do. You can call people out on b.s. about “clean eating” (which isn’t even based in scientific evidence) and labelling food as good or bad. You can compliment young girls on their ideas rather than how cute they look.

You can challenge stigma towards the psychiatric system, recognizing that eating disorders are often connected Job Openings

to depression or anxiety, which may require medication. You can stop assuming that it’s only underweight people that suffer from eating disorders; in fact, people with bulimia tend to be average or overweight.

You can also lobby for important institutional change. We should have at least one dietician in the Student Wellness Centre and ideally a psychologist as well. McMaster should have a policy that athletes with eating disorders are not allowed to compete until they’ve started to work towards recovery. We should have the ability to provide treatment for students that don’t qualify for outpatient because of a low BMI. The status quo is insufficient. I experienced this when I was diagnosed with an eating disorder but my weight was too low to be accepted into outpatient. The people at the Student Wellness Centre went above and beyond to help me, but eating disorders require expertise and a level of care that the SWC is unable to provide. I am thankful to have survived and thrived thanks to an incredible network of friends and

PRESIDENT’S PAGE For the past five years I have spent every summer in Hamilton, each providing me with the opportunity to venture out of Westdale and into other parts of the city. Throughout these summers, I have discovered great restaurants (I highly recommend Charred Rotisserie House located on James Street North), numerous waterfalls, and exciting community events.

I often found myself walking aimlessly through the downtown core, exploring the streets and admiring the city’s unique architecture.

Taking the time to explore Hamilton is something I recommend to everyone I meet, as many students do not step out into the wider city until their final year at McMaster, if ever. There could be many reasons for this, whether its unfamiliarity with the transit system, or a general lack of knowledge of all Hamilton has to offer. This is why the McMaster Students Union’s (MSU)

The President’s Page is a space sponsored and used by the McMaster Students Union (MSU) Board of Directors (BoD) to communicate with the student body. It functions to highlight the Board’s projects, goals, and agenda for the year, as well as the general happenings of the MSU.

Our goal is to help students feel even more at home than they did before.

Student Community Support Network (SCSN) is excited to launch Discover Your City Week 2015.

Discover Your City Week 2015 will run from February 9 - 13, and will highlight events and programming regularly offered in Hamilton, as well as collaborate with community partners for special events created just for students.

During the week, you will be able to skate, attend a film festival, explore coffee shops, and view award-winning artwork. Additionally, as Hamilton is the host city for this year’s JUNO Awards, we will also be spending the week promoting the city’s exciting music scene.

“Discover Your City Week gives students the opportunity to experience the rich culture that Hamilton has to offer,” said SCSN Director, Joshua Pa-

tel. “We have picked out the best events we can find to help students experience the city. Our goal is to help them feel even more at home than they did before.” SCSN works to foster a sense of community in the West Hamilton Area, as well as acts as a support and a local resource for off-campus students through programming and events. “Do you remember when you were most scared?”

“Yeah. It was last year— one of my best friends committed suicide. And you just get a call one day, and it’s just like, you know, what’s going on? What’s really happening? And then you start thinking, ‘what could I have done?’ or ‘what could someone else have done? How could we have prevented this?’ I mean, did I do everything I could, and did I tell him how much he means to me? It’s just one of those things that bothers you everyday. Even now, I think about it. Or, I hear on the news that someone else also committed suicide. And I think about their friends, and how they must be feeling too.”

“Did you see it coming?”

“Not really. I knew he was dealing with some hard stuff, but I don’t think anyone expects this kinda stuff. But I guess it happens.”

“What is your greatest strength?”

“My creativity. I’ve written plays and skits in highschool that I’m really proud of. Mostly I love it because it lets me express my inner self. I love writing comedy, and making people laugh. I’m usually a very quiet, reserved person, but when I perform or put on a piece of theatre, it lets me express myself.”

“What changes when you’re performing?”

“When I write plays or perform them, I’m able to be a different character, and play a different role. No one’s going to judge me, because I’m playing a character. I feel like I’m very self-concious a lot of the time— whenever people look at me I feel they’re judging me. But when I play a character, I can be free and break out of my shell. That’s when I’m really me.”

“Tell me a happy memory.”

“I’m on exchange from Ireland. So, a happy memory was when I went home at Christmas time, you know, coming in at the arrivals gate. It was the first time I had been away for that long, and it was the coolest moment ever. Our flight was delayed for an hour, so I was really feeling like I just wanted to get home.

And then when I got through the arrivals gate, I didn’t even see my family before my sister dived on me, and I dropped my cases. Everyone was around me and crying, and I was like, ‘I’m home, stop crying! It’s all okay!’”

“What are you proudest of?”

“I can eat ten eggs in a day.”

Voluntourism is colonialism Christina Vietinghoff Features Editor

It is always an admirable objective to make a difference in the world. But if this comes at the cost of perpetuating oppression, you need to ask yourself some tough questions.

Specifically, voluntourism, or trips abroad to help people in “underdeveloped” countries, is wrong.

It’s wrong to spend money on an experience that benefits you under the guise of benefitting others. It costs a lot of money to fly to South America, to Africa or even to the poorer areas of North America. The flight, accommodations and program staff salaries add up to a significant amount of money.

This is a sum that could be used by people that live in these areas to hire local people to do the same work, to lift each other out of poverty and empower themselves to create a sustainable livelihood.

Not only could the money be better used, but the act of

travelling to “help” foreign people is dehumanizing to the very people who are the supposed object of this aid.

These trips perpetuate the notion that people in “underdeveloped” countries are helpless and inferior. It suggests that these people aren’t capable of training their own doctors and creating their own education systems. The premise of these trips is that westerners are best able to come up with culturally sensitive solutions to challenges that are predominantly a result of white imperialism.

This is insulting. There’s no way that a bunch of students spending one or two weeks somewhere for the first time can understand and appreciate the nuances of the challenges these people face better than people that have grown up and lived this reality.

To highlight the insult, the product of these trips seems to be a new Facebook profile picture, a page in your learning portfolio or a line on your resume. Taking a picture of yourself teaching impoverished children how to play soccer is exploitation, not something

With Reading Week trips on the horizon, we need to talk about their purpose and who they really benefit.

to be proudly displayed and “liked” by your friends.

The religious affiliation of many organizations that do development work in foreign countries makes me especially uncomfortable. Religion has been used as a tool to justify and perpetuate colonialism and this continues to this day.

There is nothing inherently problematic about a religiously motivated desire to help others, but when this manifests as imperialism it needs to be questioned. For instance, it is not okay that foreign religious groups impose their beliefs and view indigenous spirituality as backwards or primitive. There is an inherent power imbalance between missionaries and people who are the beneficiary of this charity.

The one potential positive byproduct of voluntourism is that the voluntourists themselves will hopefully experience a profound paradigm shift.

They will hopefully be humbled and realize that their privileged lifestyles exist at the expense of perpetuating global inequality.

Furthermore, whether this paradigm shift really needs to be brought about by a vacation masked as helping is debateable.

Why not stay home and read some Fanon or Al-Afghani?

Why not follow someone from that area on Twitter? Why not host a movie screening with your friends of The Passionate Eye, a documentary about the work conditions in China and Indonesia for Apple workers that make your iPhone? Why not use the money you would have spent travelling towards a micro-lending program or a self-directed organization?

I’m a firm proponent of making a difference in your community, both locally and in a broader sense. I think it’s especially admirable that hundreds of McMaster students have engaged with MacServe in the Hamilton community (although I question the money spent on t-shirts).

But McMaster should question the way our institution supports voluntourism in the form of the MacServe reading week and summer trips. The organizations that are associated with these trips vary, and while some are certainly more progressive, others like Camp Restore where participants going to New Orleans stay have an explicitly religious agenda.

It’s important to acknowledge that I’m writing this as a privileged, white person; I’m not the first to make this criticism and I hopefully won’t be the last. We need to call voluntourism what it is—colonialism. It’s not okay to treat some humans as inferior beings that need help. It’s not okay to condescendingly step into the lives of others for a brief moment only to grab a few quick pictures and leave without caring about the long term impact, or lack of impact. Keep your desire to help others, nurture it with knowledge and do something actually productive. @CVietinghoff

Human rights in of appropriation Canada’s prisons Jean Touitou’s latest designs fetishize Black culture Tomi Milos ANDY Editor

Due to Jean Touitou’s first name, it should come as no surprise that the Tunisian-born founder of French label A.P.C. has largely built his credibility as a designer upon his jeans.

Because of the hard-ons that his raw denim and clothes elicit within both the street wear and fashion communities, Touitou has normally been given free reign to say whatever he wants.

Oftentimes, as is the case with his very public disagreements with Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane, this carefree willingness to step on toes is entertaining; everyone loves a well-dressed old cynic whose very being pulsates with antipathy.

But last week, Touitou went from loveable ornery designer to racist appropriator. While presenting A.P.C.’s Fall/Winter ’15 collection, which includes a boot designed in collaboration with Timberland, Touitou held up a sign that read “LAST N*GGAS IN PARIS” and went on to give a lengthy description of one look.

“I call this one look Last N*ggas in Paris. Why? Because it’s the sweet spot when the hood—the ‘hood—meets Bertolucci’s movie Last Tango in Paris. So that’s ‘N*ggas in Paris’ and Last N*ggas in Paris. [Nervous laughter from the audience] Oh, I am glad some people laughed with me. Yes, I mean, it’s nice to play with the strong signifiers.

The Timberland here is a very strong ghetto signifier. In the ghetto, it is all the Timberlands, all the big chain. Not at the same time—never; it’s bad taste.

So we designed Timberlands

with Timberland…”

Naturally, Touitou’s insensivtive commodification of black culture raised the ire of the public. In defense of his loaded remarks, Touitou cited his friendship with Kanye West, with whom he produced a collection last season. He told style.com, “as a matter of fact, when I came up with this idea, I wrote to him, with the picture of the look and the name I was giving to it, and he wrote back immediately saying something like, ‘I love this vibe.’”

If Kanye’s vote of confidence seems a cheap way to justify using a racial slur to sell clothes, that’s because it is.

Yes, the Timberland workboot has been an almost ever-present fixture within the rap scene, with its stars flaunting their wheat Timbs in videos and fans subsequently adopting them. But more concerning has been the fashion world’s complete co-opting of a boot that has been beloved by not just rap fans, but the working class as a whole. Snooty publications have betrayed their lack of perspective by their attempts to pass off the boot as a new trend.

Timberland naturally took a dim view of Touitou’s musings and immediately cancelled their collaboration.

Touitou has since apologized, saying, “when describing our brand’s latest collaboration, I spoke recklessly using terms that were both ignorant and offensive. I apologize and am deeply regretful for my poor choice of words, which are in no way a reflection of my personal views.”

While Timberland was quick to sever relations, the conversation ignited by the debacle has been useful in how it didn’t just look at Touitou’s error and instead focused on racial appropriation elsewhere.

Julianne Escobedo Shepherd’s piece for The Muse, “APC Designer: I Can Call My Clothes ‘N*gga’; I’m Friends With Kanye” is probably the best one for how it dealt with the fetishization of black culture with a refreshing frankness.

Let’s just hope that other designers wise up and start treating other cultures with respect, not for the sake of their lucrative collaborations, but for the sake of being better human beings. @tomimilos

Ganesh’s tragic attack is a sobering reminder of the conditions of our prisons Jenan Nasser Contributor

On Nov. 22, 2014, a devastating incident occurred in the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre on Barton Street. An inmate, Rocky Ganesh, was brutally attacked by his cellmate.

Rocky was beaten so viciously he slipped into a coma which lasted for weeks and resulted in severe brain trauma. His doctors are not predicting a full recovery.

Ganesh now lives at the Regional Rehabilitation Centre in the Hamilton General Hospital, unable to cognitively cope with the traumatic experiences he has been through. The mother of the assaulted victim, Sharda Ganesh, is seeking redress for the assault, claiming that there is not enough protection for inmates. Sharda suggests a provincial-wide revamping of cellmate provisions, which would segregate those who are known to be aggressive or have had past aggressive episodes with their cellmates, from

those who have no such prior episodes.

The Hamilton-Wentworth Detention centre has had previous incidents in which prison security has proven to be insufficient, and the treatment of inmates has been inhumane. Due to the lack of security personnel, the prisoners have become aggressive towards authority on more than one occasion.

A convicted rapist was transferred from the detention centre for gassing a security guard after being confined in his cell for an extended duration because of the lack of staff on duty that day.

A correctional officer at Wentworth explains that if Canadian prisons had more funding and greater attention was paid to the living conditions, they wouldn’t have to worry as much about the safety of their officers or the inmates themselves.

Due to the lack of resources, prisons are becoming more dangerous and less humane. Although prisons exist to confine criminals and law offenders, they should not be subjecting them to cruel conditions

This problem is a common one in Canada. With growing numbers of prisoners and the lack of government funding to accommodate them, a tragic incident like this could occur again. Whether people believe these inmates have a right to security is an old argument, however I believe that these inmates’ rights to life are being infringed upon. Although prisons are in place to restrict convicted felons, they are also in place to protect our rights as free abiders of the law. If living conditions worsen, not only have the constitutional rights of inmates been infringed upon but the safety and privileged freedom that we currently enjoy will also be compromised.

The money being spent on extra staff for hospital security and other fees for assault victims within the jail could be better put to use for greater staffing and larger facilities.

There is no question that the prison system is flawed and can be a dangerous place, but fearing for your life or an unexpected ambush attack in the middle of the night should not be the reality of the lives of prisoners.

“Humanizing” Hitler is disrespectful to survivors There's a famous photograph of Adolf Hitler walking along a path, hand in hand with a little girl. The year was 1936.

It was years into his power, and Germany was hosting the Summer Olympics. Anti-Semitic posters were temporarily removed, as Berlin was the stage for Nazi Germany to showcase its crowning achievements as a respectable member of the international community. Hitler is posing with the daughter of a good friend, Joseph Goebbels, his Minister of Propaganda.

Last week was the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and the picture showed up everywhere I looked online. The comments are unsettling: “Look! It's Hitler with a child!” or “Hitler loved dogs and art, you know. He was a vegetarian!” Hitler is being used as an example of the complexity of humankind, of the moral grey. Apparently, Hitler is just a misunderstood anti-hero. On the day of remembrance of one of the largest genocides in human history, I was confronted with the call to “stop dehumanizing Hitler!”

One of my favourite childhood authors shared the picture. She wrote about how much can be learned from an enigma like Adolf Hitler, and how important it is to learn that monsters are people as well. To paraphrase: “Here is Adolf Hit-

Hitler killed six million of my people, the Jews. He killed five million more, among them disabled people, mentally ill people, Romani people, people of colour, and homosexuals. My grandmother still has nightmares about the time she spent hiding in cellars from Nazis.

Even if we wanted to, Jews could not forget the effects of the Holocaust. We lost most of a language, Yiddish, and most of Yiddish's vibrant culture. The worldwide Jewish population is still more than a million short of what it was before World War II. What lessons can a staged picture with the daughter of his greatest ally in genocide teach us? Certainly not that Hitler was anything approaching a good man. He might have liked dogs, but Hitler was not a likable antagonist. He was a real man who was responsible for the deaths of millions. Nothing moral can be learned from analyzing Hitler like a complicated character in literature class.

Using him to show off your own deep-thinking abilities or to illustrate an abstract concept about human nature is self-indulgent and insensitive. Every reminder of what happened still hurts Holocaust survivors and their descendants, and this one isn't even useful. Have some respect.

coming fresh off of a week where Bell Let’s Talk promoted a culture of open discussion about mental health. The important thing is to keep the momentum going past those 24 hours. Depression and anxiety last much longer than that.

We need a paradigm shift in the way that mental disorders are viewed. It starts with every person accepting personal responsibility for those around us.

We are not islands cut off from others. Our actions affect those around us, even when we are not aware of it.

It starts with open and honest conversations, with acceptance and with the idea that we need to be mindful of others. Think twice before you mock someone for what they are wearing or for riding the elevator from the third floor, because to them it could be a big deal that they got dressed and onto that elevator at all.

We need a society where someone is comfortable responding to “what did you do last night?” with “I was at the therapist’s office.” It is hard not to go through something like that and not feel alienated from the world. There are surprising amounts of people that go to see therapists but mask it with trips to the mall or the library. The problem is not the visits to the therapist. Those visits are intrinsic to the healing process in the same way that Tylenol relieves a chronic headache. To the people who are seeing or have seen therapists, you are infinitely brave for taking that step. The road to recovery is long and arduous, but what matters is that you are on this road. The problem comes in this desire to mask these visits, and what it is that leads people to feel like they have to.

You’re having one of those days where it seems as if the whole world has teamed up to make your life miserable and revel in the aftermath. One of those Murphy’s Law days when everything and anything that could go wrong is going wrong.

On those days, it doesn’t take much to push you off the edge – a jerk’s offhand comment in the elevator, a long line for food, or loud people in lecture.

For the approximately eight percent of adults that the Canadian Mental Health Association cites as suffering from depression, this is a daily reality – a lethargy that bleeds into weeks, months, even years. Depression is not one-size-fits-all. It is different for every person. Yet it is as if there is some indescribable shift – a gear changing cogs – that causes your brain and body to run on ten percent of what it

once recognized, treatment can make a difference for 80 percent of people suffering from depression, allowing them to resume their daily lives. Yet five bullet points down is another staggering statistic. Only one in five children who need mental health services get the appropriate care. This discrepancy is a huge warning alarm demanding to be addressed.

To tackle this issue, we must attack at the root, the perception of mental illnesses. The circulation of phrases like “yesterday was such a rough day, I was super depressed” and “your text gave me a panic attack” does two things. It diminishes the gravity of depression and anxiety disorders as mental illnesses. Reducing a serious illness to the same lines as a bad day discounts the daily struggle to do something as simple as getting out of bed. Secondly, by misusing the terminology of these disorder in colloquial speech, it makes people retreat further into their shells. It makes sense that nobody wants

Like depression, anxiety disorders don’t discriminate based on age, gender, race or religion.

Both are very real problems, and ones that need to be talked about openly. Too many times people hide their disease. When a friend asks why your eyes are bloodshot or if the bruises under your eyes are an indication of how much sleep you have been getting, the answer is “I think I’m coming down with something.”

The reality is that you have been sick for a while, just in a way that somehow seems less acceptable to voice. This has to stop. When people have pneumonia, they get antibiotics that clear up their lungs and help them breathe again. While people are not generally shy to say they have pneumonia, they are much more reluctant to claim that they have depression or anxiety. Which means that pneumonia gets treated, and depression and anxiety do not.

After 18 regulation matches and 17 wins, the Marauders are exactly where they want to be.

They are in first place in the OUA, they’re ranked no.1 in the country, and they are hosting the OUA Final Four championships for the fourth season in a row.

“Our first goal was to secure home-court throughout the playoffs, and we did that, so once we clinched against Guelph, that was a good thing for us,” said head coach Dave Preston.

While the Marauders still have two regulation matches to get through against the Queen’s Gaels and RMC Paladins, both of those games will be in the Burridge Gym heading into the bye-week, which Preston believes to be an advantage for the team.

“I think every time we get to play at home is special. Play-

ing in front of your family and friends, and more importantly the people you represent, it means a lot for our guys to wear that name on their uniform, so anytime we get to play in the Burridge Gym, it means a lot” said Preston.

The match at home against Queen’s will also have added value, as it will be the last home game for seniors Jori Mantha and Austin Campion-Smith.

Mantha and Campion-Smith have put in five solid years of hard work and time into the Marauders volleyball program, and their investment into McMaster University and being a Marauder will be recognized at Seniors’ Night on Feb. 7.

“Anytime you’re changing chapters in your life, it’s an emotional and very engaging time,” said Preston.

“So these matches mean as much to anybody, but a little bit more for [Jori] Mantha and [Austin] Campion-Smith.”

As that night is sure to be an emotional one, the Marauders have been working on balancing their technical game

plans and emotional attachment in order to be as effective on the court as possible.

Preston uses the term “dialed-in” to describe the Marauders state at this point in the season.

“The two areas that we really want to dial-in are our tactical and technical game plans, and our emotional attachment.

And I think we’ve done a pretty good job at managing both of those for most of the season,” said Preston.

Two other terms that Preston drills home for the team is simplicity and repeatability, which are two big things the Marauders have been practicing effectively so far.

“The success of how we do things is simple. It’s not easy, but it’s simple. So we don’t get consumed by the extra stuff around it, we do what we do, and we do it really, really well on a repeatable basis.”

Right now, the Marauders are in the middle of a threeweek taper, where they are training at a lower volume, but at a higher intensity, so that after the bye-week, they can ramp

it up for the OUA Championships.

While the vibe in the dressing room remains positive heading into championship season, the Marauders leadership council is making sure that no one on the team is getting too far ahead of themselves.

“We’ve experienced a silver and bronze medal in nationals in the last two years that provides us with a reminder of ‘look, it’s not that easy,’” said Preston.

Although Mac is heavily favoured to win the OUA Championships, Preston is reminded by experience that in sports, anything can happen— what counts is hard work and practice, which the Marauders have been doing for almost six months now.

“It’s sport, there are no guarantees, and everything can happen in a split second change.

But your preparation is fully under control and we’re taking care of that, so our guys are on it. I have full faith, and so do they.” @lsinkyy

CHAMPIONSHIPS PREVIEW A different kind of finals season is upon us. How prepared are Mac’s varisty teams for the swan songs of their seasons?

Championship season is looming and McMaster continues to come up in trophy conversations. February marks the end of the regular season and brings us the (arguably too long) playoffs or championship meets for a variety of Marauder teams. 2014-15 could be one of Mac’s most successful years.

Here’s what to watch for going forward.

Women’s Volleyball

Head coach Tim Louks has his team peaking at the right time once again. Mac has ripped off two comeback wins in recent weeks and clinched first place the OUA West division. With that finish, they will host the OUA Final Four as long as they win in the quarterfinals. That being said, Mac was swept in their three losses this year and they’ll likely meet one of the teams that beat them during championship weekend. The positive: those games happened on Nov. 23 or earlier, meaning McMaster has had time to improve.

Player to watch: Joanna Jedrzejewska Men’s Volleyball

McMaster hasn’t seen a more dominant program on campus since the 2012 football team. They dropped their first game against Western but haven’t looked back since then, only losing two sets in 16 games. Head coach Dave Preston has his group leading nearly every team statistical category. Mac has consistently qualified for the CIS Final 8, but they have been unable to capture a national championship, winning bronze and silver in 2014 and 2013, respectively. This Marauder team is firing on all cylinders and the other CIS contenders have looked shaky. Nothing is guaranteed, but McMaster could be home to a national champion come March.

Player to watch: Danny Demyaneko Track Team

The Marauders track team are past the mid-way point of the season and are on a roll heading into the Boston Invitational on Feb. 13. While three athletes were selected to compete at the Boston University Valentine Invitational, the rest of the team will be competing at the CAN AM Invitational in Windsor.

Blair Morgan, Chelsea Mackinnon and Jeff Tweedle have been given the opportunity to compete at the fast track in Boston University.

Mac pulled off an incredible comeback against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Feb. 1, but they didn’t come out completely unscathed. Hilary Hanaka, an OUA Rookie of the Year candidate, suffered a foot injury and only played 20 minutes. According to the coaching staff, she will be available for the final regular season stretch. While Hanaka avoided major injury, the team lost another key contributor. Linnaea Harper broke her foot against Guelph and is finished for the year, and meanwhile Isabel Ormond and Jelena Mamic were unable to suit up at all because of injuries suffered in the off-season. Theresa Burns’s group will still qualify for playoffs, but they will have to rely on their depth and alter their play style a bit if they want to make their way back to nationals for the first time since 2010.

Player to watch: Clare Kenney Men’s Basketball

The sky is the limit for Mac and this deep roster, but they haven’t been able to put it all together yet for 40 minutes. The team came close to doing that against Toronto, putting together a 49-24 first half against the Varsity Blues. The Marauders wavered in the second and U of T actually won the half. The OUA is as deep as it has ever been, with Windsor, Ryerson, Ottawa and Carleton all in the top five of the CIS top ten. Head coach Amos Connolly’s group has a soft schedule going forward, but they need to iron out the wrinkles and play a complete game before any Mac fan buys a CIS Final 8 ticket package.

Turning defence into offence Mac’s work on rebounds is helping them score easy fast-break buckets Jaycee Cruz Contributor

The importance of rebounding is old-hat in basketball circles.

Ask a coach about how his team can improve and taking care of the glass is bound to come up.

For the McMaster men’s basketball team, rebounding is one of their greatest strengths.

McMaster ranks eighth in the country when it comes to total rebounds per game, averaging a healthy 42 rebounds per game. If we dive deeper, Mac ranks fifth in defensive rebounds per contest (29.7) and 18th in offensive rebounds per game (12.3).

Mac’s rebounding has helped their recent success in their double-digit wins over Waterloo and Guelph. In both games, the rebound battle was close in the first half, but the Marauders increased their intensity on the glass in the second half.

This helped them increase their leads and secure victories over the Warriors and Gryphons. McMaster out-rebounded Waterloo 48 to 22 and out-rebounded Guelph 44 to 29.

“In our first half against Waterloo our scoring totals off of our defensive rebounds were horrendous. We had 16 defensive boards that led to seven fast-break points. In the second half it was like our defensive rebounding was turning into double the points,” said Amos Connolly, head coach the men’s basketball team.

“The rebound is one thing.

The tempo at which you break out of it is another. I thought that we were better in the second half of the Waterloo and Guelph games,” said Connolly.

“We were better at translating a defensive rebound into

a stressful possession the other way.”

A high-pressure possession is created by grabbing the defensive rebound and pushing the pace up the floor, which is a style McMaster likes to play.

Run outs lead to easy points in transition.

“I think if you can get to the paint in eight seconds and stress the defense that way, that’s great. Whether that’s a post player running down the floor, rim-to-rim, or you enter the ball up the sideline and that guy attacks or gets into a threatening area within eight seconds,

I think that’s good,” Connolly said.

Mac isn’t the biggest team in the nation. Their tallest regular-rotation players are Connor Gilmore and Taylor Black who both stand around 6’ 7”.

For what they lack in height, they make up in speed.

One of Mac’s strengths is their quickness, which helps create favorable number advantages for the Marauders in transition.

Connolly thinks pushing tempo is necessary with a team full of guys that hover around the 6’ to 6’ 5” mark.

“I think we’re deep and I

think we’re athletic and I think we’re a little bit small. I think pushing pace makes sense for a team like this,” said Connolly.

It’s important that Mac knows that they have pieces that need to be used in certain capacities to yield successful results.

Despite the fact that a relatively fast tempo is ideal for the Marauders’ offense, they will slow the game down when it is necessary.

However, a fast pace is their first choice if they can get out in transition before the defense gets set.

“We do run half court sets when we have to. We attack a set defense with a set offense but the first look off of a defensive rebound is a run out,” said Connolly.

The Marauders have four games remaining in their regular season and they are all home games.

McMaster will take on the Queen’s Gaels next on Feb. 7 here at Burridge Gymnasium.

The Marauders had one of their best showings in their first appearance at the University of Toronto’s new Goldring Centres. The great play only lasted one half though, as Mac’s struggle to play a complete game continues.

The first half was objectively the best half the team has played all year. Mac was running well in transition, finding open shooters after breaking down the defence, and forcing a ton of turnovers. Lazar Kojovic, a wing player who averages five minutes per game, nearly threw down the dunk of the year. All was good in Marauder nation, as McMaster won the half 49-24.

Those good times would not last, however. Even though they were capable of continuing the blowout, Mac allowed the Varsity Blues to get what they want offensively. Devyn Johnson scored 18 second-half points on 7-14 shooting. McMaster scored 36 points on 36 percent shooting, straying from the game plan and playing too loose. U of T won the half 39-36.

Rohan Boney led the team in scoring with 18 points on 9-10 shooting. Taylor Black logged a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Mac wins OUA West, will host Final Four Scott Hastie Sports Editor

For the first time since the 2009-10 season, the McMaster women’s volleyball team are division winners.

The landscape of the OUA has changed a couple times in the past six seasons, with the provincial league being one whole division in the 201112 and 2012-13 seasons. This season, the OUA reverted to a two-division style: the OUA East and OUA West.

Mac’s OUA West title didn’t come easy, for a couple different reasons. The Marauders had to retool after losing their highest usage player and their setter. Those players were instrumental to McMaster’s OUA title win.

Even the division-winning game was dramatic; McMas-

ter was down two sets to the defending division champions, the Guelph Gryphons. Behind Joanna Jedrzejewska and Lauren Mastroluisi, the Marauders rallied and beat Guelph in five sets to solidify their division title.

The real benefit from the OUA West division win? Mac will host the OUA Final Four as long as they win a quarterfinal game in playoffs.

Teams that host the OUA Final Four have had successful track records in recent years – three of the past four hosts have made it to the OUA championship game.

Mac will look to repeat as conference champions, but have to grind through the rest of their regular season.

They will have a test against 11-6 Queen’s before taking on RMC, the team with the worst record in the OUA.

The real winners of Super Bowl XLIX They came, they paw, they conquered. Puppy Bowl XI was as cute as expected.

Super Bowl XLIX may have been a tight game, and Missy Elliot might have outshone Katy Perry and the shark backup dancer on her left, but the real story of Super Bowl weekend was Puppy Bowl XI. At 73-45 to Team Ruff, this year’s game was the highest scoring one in its prestigious 11-year history. Surge the hamster got the workout of his life, as he had to run overtime to power the scoreboard.

This year brought many new additions to the Olympics of canine sport. The penguins of yesteryear from Happy Feet have danced their way off the Geico field, to be replaced this year by a new squad of cheerleaders – dwarf goats! They didn’t disappoint as they went

baaaaatshit crazy for all the plays.

It’s also the first year the dogs were placed into separate teams, the yellow Team Fluff and the green Team Ruff, because someone finally saw through the cuteness of it all and realized that previous years have just been pups chasing their tails. Teamwork does indeed make the team work, because this year’s dogs played harder than any bone thrown at them.

The half time show was played by Katy Furry, but last Friday night must have taken a toll on her, because she couldn’t manage to purr through her hits in her blue wig. The dogs in the barking lot were not pleased, and Twitter exploded with so many memes that Grumpy Cat must be a bit nervous on top of her giant mountain of cash.

the bird, but a human had to step in because Meep got distracted by all the bird related emojis on the phone. Looks like someone’s wings are getting clipped.

Cara, the 14-week old Shih Tzu from Team Fluff, emerged from a roster packed with talented pups to be named the Puppy Bowl XI. In her rookie year, just like everyone else, Cara scored double-dog TDs, with a particular highlight when she recovered from a stumble at the 10 and pushed Bubba and the toy noodle in her mouth into the end zone. That bitch didn’t even see it coming.

This year’s Oscars nominees are predominantly white, a recurring trend in the awards shows circuit.

With this year’s Grammys set to air on Feb. 8, and the Oscars following shortly after on Feb. 22, I can’t help but ask myself the same question I ask every year: do awards shows matter? More specifically, do these programs represent the interests of both audiences and creators?

Yes, awards shows are made to entertain and advertise the nominees various products, but do they not also exist to give people something to aspire to?

If that is the case, it’s clear award shows are failing these people, and have been for several years.

Despite Lupita Nyong’o winning the award for Best Supporting Actress at last year’s Oscars, she remains only the sixth black actress to win the award in history.

To me, there is something inherently problematic about valuing an institution that has existed for 87 years that acknowledges minority talents less than one percent of the time. More importantly, there is something equally troubling about labeling this award as something to aspire to. Unfortunately, people will defend this visible racial bias as something merely reflecting panelists’ personal tastes. Some believe this discrepancy doesn’t neglect minorities for personal

reasons, but merely chooses the most deserving candidate that just happens to be white almost every time.

While that defence is obviously flawed, it isn’t the only area award shows fail in. Awards shows are too often completely out of touch with the current generation’s culture, racial bias or not.

In the case of the Grammys, its voting panel has been disconnected with music, particularly with hip-hop, for the last 20 years. In fact, awards for the rap genre have only existed since 1989, despite its dominance, and at the time only included a single award category for Best Rap Performance.

Though years have passed, and though they have since added the best album and song categories, some of their decisions have been questionable.

The Grammys in particular seem trapped in the tastes of those who run them. For example, in 1994 when Ready to Die, Illmatic and Outkast’s debut record were released, the judges felt Tony Bennett was more deserving of album of the year. Even in 2014 the rock music categories were not dominated by upcoming artists, but by Paul McCartney and Led Zeppelin. Somehow, a re-release of the latter’s music from the 70s beat out newer artists to win an award in 2014.

What makes it worse is that these decisions don’t reflect sales, something that would be

vaguely justifiable. For example, in 2001 the release of The Marshall Mathers LP lost Album of the Year to Steely Dan, despite being the best-selling record of the year. This means that not only do these decisions not reflect a nominee’s influence on the current generation, they don’t even reflect what the generation was interested in buying.

This kind of issue is unsurprising, as diversity is uncommon among those in power.

For instance, the L.A. Times reported that the people who select the Oscar nominees and winners are 94 percent “white,” with 77 percent of the members being male, with an average age of 62. Because of this, I have a hard time believing these prestigious award shows represent anyone who isn’t an old white guy. While I may feel differently when I’m an old white guy, that’s certainly a problem to me now.

So to answer my earlier question of whether awards shows matter or not is tricky. To me they can only matter if they are something every person in the industry can realistically aspire to win. Right now, I do not believe this is the case.

Until then, I’ll continue not taking these programs seriously, because if I wanted to know what a bunch of old white guys thought about music or movies, I would just ask my relatives at Christmas. @mikeygalgz

Interview: Cardinals

ANDY sits down with indie-rock group Cardinals to talk music, songwriting and leaving their roost

After sitting down with Cardinals and listening to the banter that occurs during an interview, it is clear that Levi Ryann, Myles Rogers, and Nathaniel Rustenburg are more than band mates. It is not surprising that they have been playing music together since they met in their high school jazz combo, nor that Ryann and Rogers have been friends since birth.

Their friendship is apparent throughout their 2012 EP Farther Than Love, and they feed off each other’s energy during live performances.

“It’s a zone. It’s all adrenaline, because I definitely think there’s something spiritual about playing music and playing music for people, especially original music where the songs are what you’ve created together. And so first of all, it means a lot for people to even like that, and on another level, that’s how you have the energy. It’s not even us, you just kind of tap into it,” Rogers explained.

“I think [it’s important] to not be boring to look at because people tune out pretty quick,” Rustenburg added.

Cardinals’ distinct sound is clearly influenced by a variety of genres, from modern pop and folk to early rock and roll.

However, the band stated that while their individual interests

differ, collective influences include current Canadian artists, including Sam Roberts Band and the Arkells.

The band’s songs tend to be based on real experiences.

“There are some from when we were just starting to write where you just kind of write lyrics because they sound cool, but as time goes by you realize you’re pouring your heart into things,” Rogers said.

The trio recently moved from their native St. Catharines to Toronto, and cite this transition as the major inspiration for their new album, which is scheduled for release early this spring.

“We still always say we’re from St. Catharines because that’s where we learned every-

thing, but Toronto inspired this whole new album,” Rogers explained.

While they were unable to share the details of the new release, Ryann said, “expect something different.”

Despite their recent evolution as a band, their desire to grow and explore their sound has not been satisfied.

“There have been a lot of times when I’ve felt successful, but I’m still, as an artist, always in pursuit of success,” Rogers explained. “Even though a lot of great things have happened to us and a lot of things have just come together naturally, it’s all about the pursuit.” @RachAlbertaKatz

From the pages to the small screen Lawrence Hill’s literary touchstone The Book of Negroes gets the CBC miniseries treatment

This January marked the release of CBC’s six-part mini-series adaptation of Lawrence Hill’s The Book of Negroes. Fans of the book will attest that the novel set a high bar, and the show does an admirable job of striving towards it. When Hill, who lives in Hamilton, released the novel in 2007, it caused a ripple of shock. With a bold and well-researched take on the slave trade, Hill brought to life a part of the past that is not often talked about. While in no way an easy watch, the show captures Hill’s tale onscreen.

The show picks up where the book begins, with an aged Aminata Diallo recounting her life story in front of the English Parliament. She starts with her childhood in Bayo, Africa. As she speaks, the scene switches, matching her words. Her

relationship with her parents is laid out beautifully, only for it to be torn at the seams moments later. Sold into slavery at 11 years old, Aminata is tied to a coffle of other village members, loaded onto a ship and made to endure a horrific crossing into what would become her new life as a slave. From this point on, the show is trademarked by heartbreak. While fans of the book may be surprised that the most graphic of details have been subdued, it is inevitable that many scenes will still make viewers cringe. The epitome of human cruelty is not an easy sight to witness, even more so when the recipient is an unsuspecting child.

The show jumps into the middle of the action without hesitation. The resulting momentum might leave the most faint of watchers with whiplash.

Cinematically, choppy segmentation and brief scenes characterize the beginning of the show but it becomes more seamless with time as it settles into a

more comfortable rhythm.

Central to the story is setting, and the show’s cinematography does it justice. Scenes of fog rising from the jungle floor and stretches of pale sand on blue sky are breathtaking, juxtaposing the horrid scenes that characterize the plot.

The opposite of lighthearted, The Book of Negroes is bound to turn stomachs and weigh down hearts. Even harder to swallow is the acknowledgment that the tales of human enslavement are not fiction, but a part of the past. In one particular scene, Aminata describes the moment when the people in her village began to “slip away like the moon behind the clouds.

A show not to forget On his I Forget Where We Were tour, Ben Howard puts on a prime concert experience

Those who fall under the grand umbrella of “singer-songwriter” often exude a similar aesthetic: dreamy troubadours with an acoustic guitar and a penchant for sensitive, lovelorn lyrics.

British folk artist Ben Howard is an anomaly to this foolproof formula for commercial success; he prefers staying in the dark and allowing his music — a mix of lilting guitar riffs and raw vocals — to do the selling.

Currently on his North American tour, Ben Howard graced the historic Massey Hall in Toronto on Feb. 1. Montreal native The Franklin Electric, a young folk-pop band that is likely to impress you if you’re a fan of Howard’s style, opened up the show. A hybrid of Half Moon Run and Mumford & Sons, The Franklin Electric impressed with their charming stage presence and catchy, sumptuous melodies that included refreshing brass and string components (check out the quintet’s first album, This Is How I Let You Down).

Howard’s show, very much like his career, was an ode to darkness. His preference towards staying out of the limelight was evident from the start in a subtle but dramatic entrance. Surrounded by a five-piece band (including India Bourne, the face behind the haunting harmonies on most of his tracks), Howard was seated at centre stage and was barely visible. The stage was illuminated only by low backlight, and he rested in shadows as he opened with “Small Things,” a track from his latest album, I Forget Where We Were. The distortion of the opening riff reverber-

ated around the concert hall, from the hollow of his guitar to the curvature of the ceiling, and delivered an ache characteristic of his introspective tunes. The set list was mostly comprised of songs from I Forget Where We Were, an album reflective of a darker, more pensive Howard, who embraces disappointment and heartache just as he embraces the shadows from which he performed most of his 100 minute set.

Few can argue Howard’s impressive musicality. From fingerpicking with stunning agility on his acoustic guitar to hammering out delayed notes on his electric, his prowess on the instrument is second to few, and his live execution is astounding. When Howard was the focus, you could feel the audience at the edge of their seats, afraid to move so as to not disturb the evanescence before them. Though the permanent tremor and vulnerability of his voice stood out, it is worth mentioning that the five band members who accompanied him worked together seamlessly. Perhaps one of the downfalls

of Howard’s show is the little recognition towards his band; though the play on light and dark is a thematic success, it failed to highlight the incredible accompaniment of the multi-instrumentalists who shared the stage with him.

While Howard had the spotlight on him despite the darkness surrounding him, his colleagues were, quite literally, shrouded in his shadows.

Much of the concert felt like a storm.

There were quiet, vulnerable moments, but there were also loud, punchy tracks.

In “End of the Affair,” what starts off as an ardent, acoustic tune turns into one infused with electronic beats and Howard seemingly pleading in desperation. A great live performer, he has a captivating presence and equally infectious music catalogue. With the outpouring of benevolence, the EMSU is considering more frequent elections in order to foster community. Peppers 2 says he’s on board and will begin to look for another loophole.
