Construction site woes On Aug. 23, officers responded to a report of theft at Weber State University’s Technical Education Building construction site. Various tools and equipment were stolen from the site and other damages occurred, including damaged tool boxes with locks cut off. The exact date of the theft is unknown, but it is believed to have happened over the weekend between Aug. 20 and Aug. 23.

Shattered windows Officers responded to a complaint of property damage on Aug. 13. The complainant said they had been in class all day and came back to see their car window shattered. Officers

gathered information and checked camera footage and it appeared that the window shattered on its own due to heat and pressure. The complainant was shown the video footage of the window breaking.

Let the bodies hit the floor

On Aug. 6, an officer came across a man lying in the middle of a parking lot. The officer asked if the man needed assistance, but he answered no. The officer advised him to move out of the parking lot to avoid being hit by a car. The officer left after the male moved to lie down in the grass.

Suspicious male Officers responded to a resident assistant at University Village Building Four regarding a suspicious male seen on the premises on the evening of Aug. 6. The suspect was described

as average height, wearing a ball-cap, jeans and a plaid shirt. Officers conducted periodic checks throughout the night, but the suspect was not found.

Faux paws

On Aug. 4, officers responded to a call regarding a large dog chained to the fence along the field above the pond on the west side that appeared to be dead. The caller was advised that it was a fake coyote used to keep birds off of the field.

Peeping Tom Officers responded to suspicious circumstances at the Stewart Library on July 30. A male was seen following and taking pictures of faculty after having been told not to make contact during a previous incident. The male was issued a written trespass notice.

Acting strangely On Aug. 4, officers responded to a suspicious person report from a motorist traveling on Edvalson Street. The subject was “acting strangely” and the motorist stopped to ask if they were OK. The subject kicked the vehicle, causing minor damage to the front passenger

With the Weber State University’s women’s soccer team not competing in the Big Sky Conference until September, WSU will continue their nine-game slate of non-conference play as they clash with Utah Valley University on Aug. 26 at the Wildcat Soccer Field.

After a tough 5–0 loss to Brigham Young University in an exhibition match on Aug. 14 and rebounding with a 2–0 victory over Kansas State University on Aug. 19, the Wildcats welcome UVU, who have won their first three games of the 2021 season so far and look to continue their good form as they travel to Ogden.

In the previous game for the Wildcats, junior defender/midfielder Lauren McConnell scored the first goal of the fall campaign as she received a through-ball pass from freshman midfielder Brynlee Meyerhoffer and chipped the ball over K-State goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer to give WSU a 1–0 lead at 30:47 in the first half.

Weber State added to their lead at 61:05 in the second half as sophomore midfielder Yira Yoggerst took a set-piece corner as she crossed the ball into the box and, after multiple deflections, the ball wound up in the back of the

net as freshman forward Morgan Furmaniak headed it down towards Kansas State’s goal and slowly trickled past Werremeyer to cap off the 2–0 victory for WSU in Manhattan, Kansas.

As for the Utah Valley University Wolverines, their season went off with a perfect start.

The Wolverines went to Cedar City and beat Southern Utah University 2–1 in an exhibition match on Aug. 14. On Aug. 20 they played at home and comfortably handled University of Arizona 2–0, and on Aug. 23, they equalized late in the second half and eventually won the game 2–1 in overtime against Northern Arizona University.

UVU is led by sophomore midfielder Heather Stainbrook and red shirt junior forward Sadie Brockbank, who have been the two most dangerous players the Wolverines have that the Wildcats should be cautious about. In the three games the Wolverines have played this season, Stainbrook has two goals and one assist while Brockbank has assisted twice.

In previous encounters between the two instate college rivals, Weber State has an overall record of 8–2 against the Wolverines with their most recent season game finishing with a 1–0 win in Orem on Sept. 24, 2018. The Wildcats have a four-game winning streak against Utah Valley dating back to 2011.

The fall semester is just around the corner, and that means the Weber State club hockey team will be lacing up their skates and hitting the ice soon for the 2021-22 season with nine new additions to the team.

Due to COVID-19, the American Collegiate Hockey Association canceled the regular season last year for all divisions, and the Wildcats were left with no regular-season games to play besides two scrimmages against Utah State University on March 18 and April 2.

Head coach Kiyoshi Ryujin has brought in six forwards and three defencemen into the Wildcat program looking to fit right into the lineup.

Center Jaden Hewes is a 5-foot-9-inch center from Anchorage, Alaska, who played hockey last season for the Philadelphia Hockey Club in the National Collegiate Development Conference of the United States Premier Hockey League. Hewes had three goals and two assists

in 38 games.

Kaden Krueger is an offensive defenceman from Boise, Idaho. He played eight games for Lake Tahoe Prep Academy in California and scored 3 goals and two assists in eight games during the 2018-19 season before playing one game for the Oklahoma City Junior Blazers in the North American 3 Hockey League last season.

Left wing Austin Chesworth is a Gilbert, Arizona, native who spent the 2019-20 season with the Phoenix Junior Coyotes of the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League and the Northern Cyclones located in Hudson, New Hampshire, inside the USPHL. He had three assists for the Junior Coyotes in 16 games and three assists for the Cyclones in 17 games.

Louis Staffieri is a 6-foot right wing from Everett, Massachusetts, who scored 6 goals and 13 assists in 41 games during the 2019-20 season for the Valley Junior Warriors in Haverville, Massachusetts, who play in the Elite Hockey League Premier.

center/wing Isaac Espinosa, as they both were on the same Junior Warriors team together two years ago. The 5-foot-10-inch forward from Roseville, California, scored an impressive 12 goals and six assists for 18 points in 26 games for the Junior Warriors before playing eight games and recording one assist for the New England Wolves in the EHL Premier as well.

Cole VanOrman is one of two players that will be going from the Ogden Mustangs of the USPHL Premier to Weber State. After having a prolific high school career, scoring 120 points in only 51 games for Northern Utah Independent in three seasons, the left-wing VanOrman made the jump to the Mustangs last year and had four goals and eight assists for 12 points in 27 games.

The other former Mustang, defenceman Bobby Gallard, will also continue to play in Ogden for WSU. Gallard is from Sandy and registered two points in nine games during the 2019-20 season for the Mustangs.

Defenceman Nikita Kochetkov is coming from Kazan, Russia. Kochetkov is 6-foot-9-inch-

es and looks to be a physical part of the Wildcats’ lineup.

The latest addition to the roster is another Russian, who joins the Weber State team as center/wing Osman Cholak leaves Northern Illinois University’s ACHA Division 1 program after one year. Cholak scored 6 goals and had six assists for 12 points in 25 games in 20192020 for the Huskies.

The first game of the 2021-22 season for Weber State will be on Sept. 17 at 7:15 p.m. when they face-off against the Utah Valley University Wolverines at the Ogden Ice Sheet.

SHOULD WE STILL CHOOSE TO STUDY ABROAD? A STORY OF CHINESE STUDENTS’ DILEMMA WITH COVID-19 Correspondent

ering studying abroad: 15% of them said they would cancel their study abroad plans, 69% would choose to postpone studying abroad and 16% would choose to study in another country.

Safety is the number one priority, and 89.3% students reported they would choose to stay in China because it is safer, specifically because of the management effectiveness of the COVID-19 situation.

Students are facing two unsatisfying options: risk their safety and head back to the United States or stay in China while paying a study-abroad tuition while only receiving the “virtual study abroad experience.”

Some students are trying to maximize the experience in China, like architecture student Peng Peng, who studies at Harvard and now works a remote internship with a U.S. design firm.

“I found this internship right after I got back to Shanghai, and I’ve been working with this firm for almost a year now,” Peng said during a WeChat call. “I actually enjoy my current status, busy with schoolwork during the night and having a taste of what life is going to be after I graduate. I also think I’ll seal the deal

with this firm, so it really will not affect me too much whether I can go back to the States or not.”

Peng’s attitude towards the study abroad situation is not unique, according to a survey conducted by New Oriental Study Abroad Department. Eighty-five percent of respondents are currently working as interns.

“The point to study abroad is to see more, experience more and gain a perceptive mindset of what’s missing in the society,” said Vincent Jiang, founder of TalentPond, a placing agency focused on matching students with study abroad backgrounds with potential employers.

Along with being the founder of TalentPond, Jiang is also a senior business student at the University of Illinois, who has been taking a gap year since he went back to China during the previous fall semester and spotted this business opportunity.

“Lots of my friends are complaining about this pandemic,” Jiang said. “I don’t see the point of complaining. The weak whine; the strong only seize every chance they have and take action.”

With the business of his placing agency

taking off smoothly, Jiang’s priority in life has switched.

“The business environment in China is back to pre-pandemic now, and the government has provided so many policies to support small businesses,” Jiang said. “I’m doing well here in Beijing and so is my business.”

Feeling safer and exploring the professional life have both become trends within this unique group of students.

“I feel so much safer in China with or without the vaccine,” Peng said. “It would be a different story if I chose to go back to States.”

Peng confirmed that she will wait until she feels safe to return, and the status of the vaccine plays a crucial role in her decision.

Getting vaccinated is only the first step. China announced on Aug. 13 that locally transmitted cases of COVID-19 were declining for the third day in a row. However, due to the higher transmission rates of COVID around the world, the Chinese government still has travel restrictions in place for both leaving and entering the country. It is advised that all citizens get fully vaccinated before leaving for other countries.

People planning to enter mainland China

Luna Chai walked in with both hands occupied: one with her Jack Russell Terrier puppy Zeno, the other one carrying her MacBook.

“I had never really thought about getting a dog before, but I adopted Zeno this January,” she said as she sat down and turned on her laptop. “Everything seems reasonable now with the pandemic still going around the world, right?”

Chai, a junior student currently studying at New York University for her Bachelor of Arts degree, returned to Beijing in June 2020 due to COVID-19. She has been living with her parents ever since, and her daily routine has changed to walking her newly adopted puppy and taking online courses. After a year of taking all of her classes online, she isn’t sure when she will be able to return to New York, so she figured, why not get a dog?

“I saw Zeno at the pet adoption fair at the end of last year, and the moment I saw him, I knew I needed him,” she said as she patted Zeno. “I spent $20,000 on the one-way ticket from JFK to PEK airport last June when the situation started losing control in the States, and it has been almost a year. I’m still stuck here, and don’t see any chances of going back to the beautiful campus in New York City anytime soon.”

Chai has spent three semesters at home in Beijing. Forty percent of this art student’s study abroad time had to be switched to “home-school” due to the pandemic.

“The reason for me to choose study abroad at the age of 18 was because I wanted to experience the culture differences in-person.

I wanted to sit in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and grab a cup of coffee with friends I made in school who could be from anywhere in the world,” Chai said. “This virtual study abroad student life is not what I expected.”

Chai is not the only one disappointed by the “virtual study abroad experiences” and starting to doubt their decision to choose study abroad in the States. According to Caixin News, more than 300,000 Chinese students who are supposed to be in the United States for school are now stuck back home in China.

are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result 24 hours prior boarding time, be fully vaccinated and must complete a 14-day quarantine in a designated hotel upon arrival in China as well as an additional self-quarantine of seven more days at home. If one travels to Beijing, then the hotel quarantine is extended to 21 days.

As of April 22, more than 200 million doses of the vaccine had been administered in mainland China, a huge number to achieve in less than two months. However, with a population of 1.4 billion, 200 million doses accounts for less than 10% of the population. Based on the report from China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 80% of the domestic population needs to be fully vaccinated in order to have sufficient immunization against COVID-19. There is no possibility for China to resume its normal border operation until the vaccination target has been achieved.

In order to achieve that target in the shortest period of time, the Chinese government has put a lot of effort into the vaccination campaign. All Chinese citizens can get their COVID-19 vaccines for free, and the government has set up hundreds of vaccination stands to make getting vaccinated easier and more convenient. Chinese citizens only need to show up with their IDs — no appointment needed. Chai and Peng had both had their

first shot and will take their second dose when possible.

In the U.S., President Biden announced on April 22 that 200 million doses of the vaccine had been administered, which meant at least 38% of adults in the U.S had their first shot and 20% had their second shot.

need to renew my visa. However, it is impossible for me to make an appointment with the U.S Embassy to get one.”

In order to legally enter the United States as a student, a non-citizen must apply with the U.S. Embassy for an F-type student visa, and currently, the U.S. Embassy has not opened applications for these visas, meaning that international students participating in study abroad programs or attending school in the

United States cannot apply to renew their visas, even if students have their the necessary documentation.

Beta Zhan, a junior who should have spent his first year in the States last September, was looking forward to attending Episcopal High School. All his plans were abruptly changed due to the pandemic.

Ever since the vaccination procedure kicked off in the States, Zhan has been watching the news on flights to the U.S, hoping there would be good news for him.

According to the State Department’s policy update on April 27, the restriction of the 14-day quarantine had been lifted for Chinese students. With this new policy, Chinese students could fly to the States directly from mainland China.

“I was so thrilled when I saw this post from the U.S. Embassy’s Weibo account. It would save us so many troubles. Otherwise, I have to fly to a third-party country 14 days prior entering into the States,” Zhan posted on his social media, with several smiley face emojis.

The only concern for Zhan now is waiting for the U.S Embassy to resume the visa application service.

“I’m still excited about going to the States to study,” he said. “Especially with the new Biden government, the policy towards Chinese students shall switch to positive, I think.”

With all of these changes and new mindsets, will study abroad still be a popular option in the future? Leo Zhao, a study abroad counselor at the International School of Beijing, said he has seen the pandemic change the attitude towards study abroad “in a profound way.”

Prior to COVID-19, 95% of ISB students chose to study abroad after they graduate from high school, and more than 45% of them chose to study in the States. According to Zhao, that’s not the case anymore.

“The most common questions I got from parents before were about which major or school they should choose,” Zhao said. “But now, they ask questions about whether to choose study in Asian countries instead of the U.S. and European countries.”

Fifteen percent of students said they canceled their study abroad plan, according to Kantar Consulting’s report.

Zhao thinks this is just the beginning.

“The way Chinese parents and students think about study abroad is changing permanently,” he said. “I think things will never go back to pre-pandemic.”

The fall 2021 semester is approaching quickly, and with it comes a new set of plans for performances and events put on by the Lindquist College of Arts and Humanities. This semester is especially exciting, with plans to return to in-person performances at Weber State University.

“We are so excited to welcome the community back to the Browning Center for live events,” Cassie Smith marketing and P.R. manager for Lindquist College of Arts and Humanities, said. “You can practically feel the excitement in the air in the building — the students missed performing for live audiences and are so excited to share what they’ve been working on for fall semester.”

Smith said the Department of Performing Arts will also have opportunities for audience members to join select performances via live stream, as was done in recent semesters.

Otherwise, most events will be taking place in-person.

“Last year, we focused on adapting and streaming our performances; this year, we will be celebrating our return to campus,” Deborah Uman dean of Lindquist College of Arts and Humanities, said.

The Bonneville Chamber Music Festival will return to campus Sept. 10 and 11 with artists from WSU and around the United States. The first night, “Classically Jazzed-up Folk Songs,” will feature a combination of trumpet, violin and four cellos performing unique arrangements of folk and popular music from around the world.

The second night, “Schumann & Brahms…,” will be a celebration of the works of Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms and an exploration of their shared, love-triangle affection for Schumann’s wife.

In late 2023, Weber State University’s Bus Rapid Transit system will be finished, if all goes according to plan.

The idea of creating such a transportation project has bounced around for roughly 20 years, and despite challenges, the project is finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel as Federal Transit Administration financial backing became available and the proper entities have come together.

The project broke ground in 2020, and everything is running smoothly so far, according to James Larson, public relations specialist for Utah Transit Authority.

Students will be able to see the new landscape on WSU’s campus when returning for the fall 2021 semester as the project takes its shape.

“In September, we’ll start working on 32nd to 36th and widen the road and creating that connecting to Weber State,” Larson said. “Now you’re starting to see busways, canopies and curbing go into place.”

Chad Downs, project manager with Facilities Management at WSU, agrees with Larson, stating that bringing the BRT to this stage has been a massive coordination effort.

“It is moving forward remarkably, considering all of the entities that are involved,” Downs said. “I think it’s amazing that it’s moving forward this far, and it’s actually being executed on campus, and the majority of the central campus work is being done as we speak this summer.”

Construction has begun in front of the Shepherd Union as an update of the BRT system.

Widely diverse yet necessary organizations have come together, including UTA, WSU, Ogden City and McKay-Dee Hospital, Weber County, Wasatch Front Regional Council and many more, including Ogden City businesses.

A project like this isn’t easy with the amount of coordination it takes or with COVID-19 sweeping the nation and impacting not only public transit but also many daily routines and jobs. Even with this setback, however, the deadlines for the project haven’t changed.

“We’ll have three stations finalized and fully up and running for fall semester 2022 that will become the new shuttle for Weber State University,” Larson said. “And that will transport the students from the Dee Events Center to student housing and the center of campus.”

Buses will be picking students up from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., every six to eight minutes.

Downs stated that it is one thing when a project like this is in planning, but it’s a whole different story on the construction end of things. Downs is particularly happy to see the progress and said COVID-19 had a positive impact in allowing for more construction on campus than was initially planned for.

The project has come along smoothly, and the deadline for this project to be finished in 2023 is realistic, according to Downs and Larson. However, there isn’t an exact month or date set for the official ribbon cutting.

“There’s a webpage through UTA that anyone can check on the BRT project’s progress, and students can look for signage around campus for more information,” Downs said.

The Big Sky Conference coaches unanimously selected Weber State as first in the coach preseason poll. The Wildcats tallied up 10 first-place votes.

With 10 first-place votes, the Wildcats took 100 points and the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks placed second in the preseason poll with 86 points. Coaches cannot vote for their own squad to be first, and NAU received Weber State’s first-place vote.

Northern Colorado was close behind NAU, tallying 83 points, followed by Montana State, which received 73 points for fourth. Sacramento State came next with 67 points, and Portland State received 50 points. Southern Utah and the University of Idaho tied for seventh with 38 points each. Eastern Washington came in ninth with 36 points, Idaho State received 18 points and the University of Montana received 16 points.

“We’re just happy to play,” Bodily said.

“With all of this going on, we’re just excited to play and we’re super grateful to have games.”

The unofficial kickoff to the season started on Aug. 23 with a team scrimmage dubbed the “Purple & White” scrimmage.

The white team consisted of seniors and returning players, and the purple team consisted of some returning players and freshmen. Throughout the match, players switched teams, but the White team prevailed on top after winning 25–19, 25–15 and 25-12.

Nay led the squad with 19 kills. Emma Mangum had nine kills, and Schiess had eight.

The official start of the Wildcats’ regular season was on Aug. 27, when WSU hosted Seton Hall.

The Weber State Women’s Volleyball team is returning to the Swenson Building after their historic 2021 spring season.

The Wildcats obtained Weber State’s first ever win in an NCAA volleyball tournament in Omaha, Nebraska, in their spring season. The Wildcats advanced past the first round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in 33 years after beating Bowling Green 3–1. WSU fell to No. 1 Wisconsin in round two of the tournament.

The ‘Cats have 11 returning players, and head coach Jeremiah Larsen also added five new faces to the roster. Some of the tried and true returning Wildcats include Ashlyn Power, Sam Schiess, Dani Nay and Rylin Adams.

Pacific North All-Region Honors, All-Tournament team honors in the Big Sky Championship Tournament, Big Sky All-Conference and was dubbed the Big Sky Conference MVP. One of the five new faces representing the Wildcats includes Baylee Bodily, a freshman middle blocker out of Draper, Utah.

“Growing up, I always wanted to play college volleyball. That has always been one of my goals,” Bodily said. “I always wanted to stay in Utah. The team’s success drew me to this program, and I wanted to learn as much as I could from Miah Larsen.”

Some of the other new freshmen hail from California: Charli Bouquet is a libero, and Brooklyn Frederick is an outside hitter. Cayton White is also an outside hitter and is joining Weber State from Nevada.

Kess Krutsinger is a Colorado native who transferred to Weber State as a middle blocker from Southern Mississippi.

“I saw coming here as a really good opportunity,” Krutsinger said. “ I couldn’t pass it up.

Since the beginning of COVID-19 in March 2020, Weber State University has kept students, faculty and staff up to date on what protocols and safety measures they are taking on campus.

On July 29, WSU sent out an email, stating that 80% of campus population had indicated, in a survey, that they either had been vaccinated or were planning to before fall semester.

The email also talked about CDC guidelines with the new surge of COVID cases due to the Delta variant.

“Greater vaccination rates also minimize the potential for disrupting our academic calendar and campus activities,” an email from Director of Public Safety Dane LeBlanc said.

This is good news for those who prefer in-person courses. Senior Niko Valerio said he is glad that WSU is offering many opportunities for the vaccine and that WSU is allowing personal choice for vaccines and masks.

“The only concern that I have is that the university may go back to sending students back online or issuing a mask mandate,” Valerio said. “I struggled having online classes as I felt I wasn’t as connected to the class. My worst grades in the past three years attending were greatly affected by online classes.”

Valerio, along with other students who responded to a question on The Signpost’s Instagram page, had mixed feeling about returning to fall semester. Some responded that they were not worried about returning

and are feeling excited about coming back to in-person. Others, including Taylor Hepworth, said they were nervous since many people have not been vaccinated.

As of July 21, COVID testing on campus was also no longer offered. Although, in the email from July 29, LeBlanc stated that WSU would hold vaccination opportunities before students return to school. at the Continuing Education Center on Mondays and Wednesdays from Aug. 2 to Aug. 30.

Clinics will also be held in the atrium on Aug. 30 and Sept. 3 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for those who still have not had the opportunity to be vaccinated.

The email and information posted to the coronavirus WSU webpage show that new CDC guidelines have been released, stating that all vaccinated adults are recommended to wear face coverings inside when in a high-transmission area. WSU will continue to welcome those who want to wear face coverings, but because of law HB1007 passed last year, WSU can not require face coverings on campus.

On June 15, WSU lifted all COVID-19 restrictions on campus. This meant in-person classes and events would return to a more normal state during the fall 2021 semester. The email, sent out campus-wide on June 14, said that individuals who were not vaccinated were still encouraged to wear face coverings. Those who are vaccinated could also choose to wear face coverings when they felt necessary.

Student Body President Ben Ferney said he is looking forward to this semester. Another student, Natalie Pollock, who graduated high school during the pandemic and has spent the beginnings of her college career online, added that while she feels the University has done a good job handling the pandemic, she has reservations about returning to campus.

“I’m happy that more online options have been added, since I’m a commuter student, but I know that not everyone is happy about it. My wish is that these options are still kept while we continue back into the new norm,” Pollock said.

WSU will continue to monitor conditions and keep students and faculty up to date.

A significant portion of Weber State University students qualify as non-traditional students. To better help these students, who tend to have different challenges when entering college, WSU has a department devoted to helping them on their college path in the Non-Traditional Student Center.

The center offers additional support for any non-traditional student who would like to take advantage of its resources, with locations in the Shepherd Union Building on the Ogden and Davis campuses.

Kristalyn Garfield, peer mentor at the Non-Traditional Student Center, was a returning student herself. When Garfield came back to WSU, she was 41. Garfield understands that it can be challenging just returning to school after some time has passed.

“The Non-Traditional Student Center does not turn away any WSU student seeking their services,” Garfield said.

Though the center does not turn away students looking for resources, their goal is targeted to serve students who are married or widowed, over 25 years of age, have dependents or are in committed relationships.

“I was able to find solutions to problems so fast just by coming here,” Garfield said. “Just by being around those kinds of students and Anna Hobbs and Trisha Beckstead working on Non-traditional Student files. getting the help I needed.”

Advisor Cody Brown was also a non-traditional student in college. After graduating with a master’s degree, he took a job at the Non-Traditional Student Center.

“We’re a one-stop-shop for any student’s need,” Brown said.

Brown, Tenney and Garfield suggest that all non-traditional students stop in the Shepherd Union and see what services, scholarships and activities that the Non-Traditional Student Center can offer them.

WYVERN GAMING CLUB

Weber State’s Wyvern Gaming Club is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

With the club’s longevity, life-long connections will inevitably be made. Daniel Arnold, event director for the club, mentioned members— including himself — had started relationships and even families through the club.

“Even if you don’t stick to the club much, you still make connections with people that could persist past college,” Williams said.

An example of this would be the club members coming together to cosplay and attend conventions together, such as FanX and Anime Banzai.

People interested in joining can either join their Facebook page or drop by during their scheduled meeting times.

The club also has a Discord server where members can connect with the rest of the club outside of in-person meetings.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the club, unfortunately, had to close and was unable to receive new members, but thanks to the Discord server, the current members were still able to keep in touch over the past year and a half.

The club will have a booth at the block party on Sept. 3 where people can stop by and join as well.

Finding a place in the world is not the easiest thing for anyone, but the existence of different campus clubs makes it easier to meet new people and share interests with one another.

The Wyvern Gaming Club, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, is a club that focuses on socializing and sharing interests in gaming and anime. Its goal is to help its members meet new people and de-stress amid all the schoolwork and other responsibilities they may have.

The club is year-round, so members can attend meetings during any semester throughout the entire year.

“I use it as a way to keep myself going,” Sebastian Williams, club president, said. He also said that if he had nothing but classes all the time, “that would get really annoying really fast.”

Previously, the club would meet every Wednesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. On Wednesdays, club members played games, and on Thursdays, they watched anime.

However, the anime-watching part of the club will be discontinued. Due to Weber State’s new understanding of copyright rules, the club is no longer allowed to host anime-watching parties on campus.

Members are still able to play games together as they used to. Gaming nights consist of a wide variety of tabletop role-playing games, board games and even video games that the members themselves bring in. Attendees can feel free to either bring their own or join other members’ games.

For now, it is still unclear how meetings will be organized without anime nights, but they will still be planned for either Wednesday or Thursday nights. The fall semester meeting schedule updates will be posted on the Weber

CONNECTING AT THE STEWART LIBRARY Managing Editor

The Stewart Library on Weber State University’s Ogden campus has many resources for returning students as well as freshmen. Resources range from laptop and book checkout, a testing center, the CAT cave and multiple areas to study, including public and private spaces. This semester, the library now has all in-person services available and is inviting students and others to rediscover the Stewart Library.

A page on the library’s website titled “Reconnect, Rediscover, and Renew” shares services that began going back to in-person during the summer; it also includes the resources that will be available beginning Aug. 30. With COVID-19, the library was not able to operate at its full capacity with in-person services since March of 2020.

“Over the summer, the library is gradually bringing back all of our in-person services while also continuing online and remote services that you have come to value, with full services available by Aug. 30,” the website said. Services that are returning include 3D printing requests, group study spaces, inter-library loan materials, Special Collections and late-night Sunday hours.

Not only will students have access to more in-person services inside the building, the library also offers search tools like OneSearch, where students can find academic articles on-

line for their classes. Students can also search the library database for articles and books that the library has physical copies of.

The Weber Cares Food Pantry will also be moving to the Stewart Library. This will allow for more space and a better way to effectively help students.

Spaces for students to study and use computers are available. Students can rent or reserve study spaces on the second floor, which are set up in the form of grouped tables and computers, by visiting the reservation kiosk on the first floor.

For students who may want a more private or controlled setting, study rooms are available.

“Study rooms are available for reservation for up to two hours a day,” Roxanne Derda, circulation manager, said. “These are very popular, so we highly recommend making reservations ahead of time. You can reserve these spaces up to two weeks in advance.”

With COVID cases rising again, Wendy Holliday, dean of the Stewart Library, said they will be taking every possible measure to help students have and keep access to the library while staying safe.

“We have staffing plans and policies that we can implement to operate the library with as few people in the building as possible, while retaining strong online services, if conditions warrant,” Holliday said. “Our staff, including our amazing student employees, learned a lot about how to operate the building as

safely as possible over the last year, and we will benefit from these lessons moving into the fall semester.”

WSU PROFESSOR RECOGNIZED WITH PRESTIGIOUS 40 UNDER FORTY AWARD Weer State University

Recently, Weber State University’s Scott Moore, an assistant professor in the medical laboratory sciences department, was awarded the ASCP 40 Under Forty award.

This prestigious award is often given to laboratory science leaders and honors highly-accomplished pathologists, pathology residents and laboratory professionals under the age of 40 who have made significant impacts in the world of laboratory medicine across the globe.

Moore says he feels honored to be recognized as a professional in the world of laboratory sciences.

Moore has been with Weber State for about four years and teaches courses such as clinical chemistry, clinical correlations and the history of medicine. According to a press release, Moore recently completed his first big clinical trial by determining the effectiveness of lifestyle modifications in the treatment of type 2 diabetes using transcriptome sequencing.

Next, Moore did a fellowship where he spent half of his time teaching and the other

In a throwback performance that was reminiscent of his days tearing apart the Big Sky Conference in the purple and white, six-time NBA All-Star and 2021 Olympic gold medalist Damian Lillard had the Dee Events Center rocking once again with 3-pointers ripping through the net from deep at the Alumni Classic.

The game has been hosted by Lillard every two years from 2015 to 2021.

“Everybody knows how much pride I take in being a Weber State Wildcat, and being able

to put this thing together is important for not just me, but for all the alumni,” Lillard said.

Lillard finished the night with 41 points, 11 3-pointers and four steals while playing all 40 minutes, including almost hitting a buzzer beater for the win.

Despite his impressive performance, Lillard ended up on the losing side of a 93–92 Team White victory over Team Purple.

Lillard said the game was a crowd pleaser.

“They got a treat tonight,” he said.

Wildcat alum Eddie Gill, who played for the Wildcats from 1998-2000, dazzled in the pregame festivities, taking the 3-point contest from fellow alum Nic Sparrow by burying 17 threes to Sparrow’s 13.

With multiple generations of former players running the court, friendly trash-talk and airballs were inevitable.

“It’s always a great time getting together with the guys, past and present, and just getting a good run in,” Lillard said.

The two-time Big Sky Conference MVP slammed in his signature one-handed dunk on a fast break, sending the Wildcat faithful into a frenzy with under two minutes to play in the first half.

Lillard took Team Purple into the break holding a 44–38 lead.

The entire arena held its collective breath as Lillard jumped and evaded a contesting hand and got the 3-pointer off, but the shot bounced off the rim to end the game and the crowd exhaled.

John finished with 22 points and five treys along with the game-winning bucket for Team White.

Prior to the tip-off, Lillard signed autographs for an hour inside the Dee with a line of fans that grew to eventually wrap almost completely around the arena.

“It’s great any time that you can do something like this and just bring happiness and shine a light on people,” Lillard said.

The giant circle of fans held Lillard’s Portland Trail Blazer and Wildcat jerseys along with posters and his signature Adidas shoes they hoped to get signed by the NBA mega-star.

Lillard’s shown a fondness for Weber State and the city of Ogden by coming back and hosting the alumni game four different times: 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021.

The Oakland, California, native has been busy this summer, leading the Trail Blazers on a playoff run and contributing to Team USA’s fourth straight gold medal, but even amongst

all of it, he always makes it a point to come back to his college home.

“It’s a great level of appreciation on my side, because these are the people that had this type of appreciation for me before the rest of the world even knew who I was,” Lillard said.

Lillard spoke at length about his love for Weber State and the city of Ogden, describing memories that flood his mind when he comes back.

When Lillard comes back to Ogden, he reminisces about his first college party and his first tattoo. Lillard reflects back on his growth from 17 to 21.

Lillard stayed after the game and signed more autographs for fans who were on the court and made clear through his actions and words that being a Wildcat is special to him.

“It means something to have Weber State across your chest,” Lillard said.

This fall, the history department of Weber State will welcome Leah LaGrone as assistant professor of public history, borderlands and gender. She will be taking over as the director of the public history program, a minor offered by the history department.

LaGrone graduated with a Ph.D. from Texas Christian University, and she moved from Fort Worth, Texas, to Utah over the summer.

According to LaGrone, public history is a field that seeks to interpret and present history to those outside of academia.

“It’s teaching students how to interpret and create history that is engaging to the public,

that is public-facing, that the public can interact with,” LaGrone said. “Anytime you go to a museum or online and interact with any kind of history, that’s public history.”

One part of the public history program involves sending interns to different nearby museums, such as Hill Aerospace Museum in Ogden. There, one of the WSU interns is creating a virtual tour for one of the aircraft that the public can experience, complete with clickable information.

“My job will be to teach them how to do this kind of thing digitally, but also in the brick and mortar space as well,” LaGrone said.

WSU’s public history program will also be working with the Union Station Museum in Ogden, sharing projects through the muse-

um’s app. Apart from designing visual galleries, students in the public history program will also create blogs, podcasts and digital maps of historic locations.

LaGrone also hopes to develop a class that will cover another of her areas of expertise: borderlands, especially the Southwest.

“The border is different than the interior of Mexico and the interior of the United States,” LaGrone said. “It’s a culture unto itself, and so it is really interesting to see how people within that border interact with both countries.”

LaGrone has researched a specific history of women’s labor in the Southwest. Her dissertation examined how historic laws of Texas affected women along the border, especially minimum wage legislation.

In addition to public history, LaGrone will also teach History 1700 in the fall.

“I just want my students to be appreciative and cognizant of the history that surrounds them, how it has made them who they are and made the place that they live,” LaGrone said.

“It’s really about making those connections between the past and present.”
