Katharine French-Fuller has been appointed the director of community research for the Center for Community Engaged Learning.

RESEARCH HOPES TO FOSTER CONNECTIONS

Katharine French-Fuller has been appointed as the new director of community research at the Center for Community Engaged Learning. Although she has been promoted to this new status, she is very familiar with all the job’s requirements.

French-Fuller has a Ph.D. in Latin American history and a master’s degree in Latin American studies. Understanding the history of power dynamics, equities, inequities and distributions of wealth in her community is critical for the projects she takes part in, and her experience and education allow her to serve the community.

The Center for Community Engaged Learning connects the community with the campus.

The extension was founded seven years ago.

“We try to meet the community’s needs through research. The community tells us what they need,” Fuller explained.

Around the same time as the founding of the extension, French-Fuller was hired as a consultant for student affairs and worked at the grant office on campus as well. An example of past research she has conducted is the survey that was administered to furloughed government employees two years ago, for which she received national and state attention in the media.

She explained that the staff at the center consists of a data community research coor-

dinator, grant event specialist, three undergraduate research assistants who are paid and five research fellows: four professors and one Ph.D. student.

CCEL works with a lot of non-profit organizations tackling everything from educational issues to food security or access to foods of choice. “Taking a more applied approach to figure out how we can use research as a benefit for the people and the community is what motivates me to continue research,” French-Fuller said.

They’ve also put up a COVID-19 dashboard that shows statistics of hospitalizations and the number of cases per day. One of the things they are researching is the huge impact the virus has on underrepresented ethnicities

and domestic violence rates. They even found that calls to the 211 help hotline skyrocketed with mental health concerns.

French-Fuller feels there is a lot of potential in this field and hopes to help non-profits implement more efficient projects for the community in the future.

She also wants to emphasize the people she works with and how unifying their different skills and mindsets are.

“It’s important to remember that when working with the community, everyone has to respect each others’ knowledge and research,” French-Fuller explained.

WSU’s Cheer team comes home with Grand National Champion title.

After the COVID-19 pandemic forced the 2020 National Cheer Association College Nationals into a cancellation, the Weber State cheer team was forced to watch its dominance take a hiatus. This year, the Wildcats took their fourth consecutive grand national championship while reaching new heights in the process.

WSU has become a dynasty in their cheer division, and the team and their members are a juggernaut to be reckoned with.

When the Wildcats traveled to Daytona Beach, Florida, for the 2021 NCA College Nationals, there was no question that all eyes would be on them in the Advanced Large Coed I division.

WSU turned that attention into ascension as they rose above high expectations and became an entry into history by posting a score

of 98.5708, the highest mark in program history.

Not only were the ‘Cats able to set a new program high, but they also posted the highest score of any team of any division and were crowned as the Grand National Champions.

The Weber State Dance also will be bringing home a national championship back to Ogden after placing first in the hip hop division I finals, posting a score of 94.115.

WSU also had individuals walk away with

national championship honors with Elsa Hassett and Kollin Cockrell winning a national title in partner stunt. Cockrell now is a two-time after winning it back in 2019 as well.

The Wildcats celebrate the team’s fourth-straight Big Sky Conference Championship on April 10 at Stewart Stadium.

The Weber State Wildcats football program continues to make its mark on the Big Sky Conference with the team winning its fourth straight Big Sky championship and its first ever outright conference title in program history with a 20–15 victory over Idaho State.

“It feels amazing,” Conner Mortensen, Wildcat senior linebacker, said. “We don’t have to share it; we got it all to ourselves. It’s been a crazy year, and we’ve been working hard to make it happen.”

WSU made history with the win, setting a

new record of 11 straight home victories, and the second team to ever win four straight Big Sky Championships.

“I’m proud of the players and the coaches.

First outright conference championship in school history, it’s a big deal,” Jay Hill, Wildcats head coach, said. “There’s so many good things going on and I’m just happy with where the program’s heading.”

Solidifying the afternoon’s big game status were two F-35A’s out of Hill Air Force Base’s 388th Fighter Wing whose shadows fell over the turf at Stewart Stadium seconds after the conclusion of the National Anthem in a flyover that had the 4,786 fans in attendance on their

feet.

The Wildcats emerged out of the purple pregame smoke but still appeared to be in a haze to start the game when the team’s first two offensive possessions ending in punts.

WSU’s offense managed 14 points through 3 1/2 quarters, but with 8:25 left to play in the fourth quarter, Bengal quarterback Tyler Vander Waal led ISU on a three minute drive.

Starting with a quick 11-yard first down slant to receiver Xavier Guillory and a 55-yard catch and run from wideout Tanner Conner brought ISU to the Wildcat 15-yard line.

The Wildcat defense dug in, forcing Bengal kicker Kevin Ryan onto the turf.

Ryan’s first field goal attempt of the day was blocked, but he knocked through the goahead field goal, leaving 5:20 on the clock for WSU’s Bronson Barron and the Wildcat offense to operate a comeback with a touchdown needed to win the game.

After the sluggish offensive play throughout the game, Barron took WSU down the field.

The drive began with a 15-yard pass interference penalty against ISU’s Jayden Dawson, who was trying to contain Rashid Shaheed, but grabbed onto him, drawing the penalty flag.

Shaheed drew multiple pass interference calls throughout the game and finished with six catches for 56 yards.

Junior punter Mackenzie Morgan earned Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week Honors, pinning the Bengals inside the 10-yard line three times, including his season-high of 65 yards.

The Wildcats were ecstatic after the win, and the freshman quarterback was happy for the team’s senior leadership.

“It’s incredible to share it with these seniors.

These guys are leaders on our team, they deserve it for sure, and winning it for the first time outright, that’s a big deal,” Barron said.

The defense bailed out WSU twice after turnovers, including with 1:01 in the first quarter. Junior tight end Justin Malone hurdled a defender after catching a pass, but the ball was knocked loose by the ISU defense.

Malone came back in the second half, redeeming himself with a touchdown catch lofted across the field to him as he ran down the middle of the field wide open.

With 12:07 left in the second quarter, junior quarterback Randall Johnson entered the game but fumbled on the first play on a QB keeper.

“We did not do a good job of finishing drives in the first half,” Hill said. “Just too many issues.”

The Wildcats put its first points of the game on the scoreboard when Barron hurled a 60yard bomb to MacPherson that fell straight out of sky into the junior receiver’s arms before he was dragged to the ground at the 1-yard line.

MacPherson finished the day with four receptions for 108 yards.

Two plays later McMillan plunged into the end zone for the Wildcats’ first touchdown of the game and a 7–3 lead with 3:26 to play in the second quarter.

McMillan had 90 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown in WSU’s regular season finale.

out of bounds.

The next play, Daniel Wright Jr. took the hand-off, running to the left and stiff-arming ISU defenders in his way to the end zone.

He dove for the pylon with both hands outstretched, knocking it over for the Wildcat go-ahead six-yard touchdown — giving WSU a 20–15 lead.

“The conversation was just go execute, all eleven guys go do your job on every play, focus on one play at a a time and do what you’re supposed to do, and once you do that, go do it again on the next play,” Barron said of the game’s final drive. “No one was nervous, no one was doubting, we knew we were going to go down and score.”

The Wildcats nearly converted the 2-point attempt, but wide receiver David Ames was knocked out of the end zone by Bengal defender Quantraill Morris-Walker.

ISU would get one last grasp with the football, but on a first-and-10 pass from the Bengal 37-yard line, junior cornerback, WSU’s Marque Collins, sealed the Wildcats’ victory and first ever outright Big Sky title when he toe-tapped an interception directly in front of the Wildcats sideline — sending the team into a celebrating frenzy.

“We’re so tight on defense. We all want to see each other succeed, and Marque, he’s been battling injuries all year so to see him make that play. He deserved it,” said Mortensen.

The defense sealed the win, but Barron knelt down to run out the clock, making it official.

WSU next looks to the FCS Playoffs, where the team made it farther than ever before in 2019, falling in the semi-finals to James Madison University.

“Now we need to take the next step and make a little more noise in the playoffs than we have,” Hill said. “Hopefully after this week we can get some guys back in healthy and be ready to make a real playoff run. The good thing is we’ve yet to play our best football game.”

The Wildcats will find out the opponent they’ll be facing on April 18, during the FCS Selection Show on ESPNU.

LGBTQ youth are three times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. Forty-eight percent of transgender adults reported having made a suicide attempt, according to Encircle’s website.

Because of those statistics, Encircle chooses to bring hope to the Utah community.

A non-profit organization, Encircle follows four core objectives to help LGBTQ youth: authenticity, building social connections, learning emotional and psychological skills and feeling positive emotional experiences.

Stephenie Larsen, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a mother of six from Orem, Utah, and the founder and CEO of Encircle, said she used to think that being gay was a sin.

Over the years, she noticed the prominence of hatred toward the community at church grow, so she felt she had to do something about it.

She came up with the idea in 2016 when she found out that the LGBTQ youth are at a higher risk of depression, suicide and substance abuse than their heterosexual peers.

Soon after, she contacted her uncle, John Williams, who is an entrepreneur, and he helped her build Encircle into what it is today.

Currently, he runs the center in Salt Lake City.

Her overall goal with Encircle was to build bridges, whether that’s between religion, politicians, families or friends.

“Being LGBTQ is not an issue that needs to be debated,” Chief Operating Officer Jacob Dunford said. “There are no sides to it. The issue is everyone else who has a problem with us. Being LGBTQ is just 1% of who we are.

They are artists, business people, musicians.

Working since day one, Dunford said that Encircle has promising results from the past three years. Eighty-one percent of the time, those who come to Encircle come 21 times or more.

According to Encircle’s website, more than 70,000 people have been served since 2017. Providing services such as tours of the centers, online and in-person access to their library, friendship circles, daily programs and therapy, Encircle is making a difference for the LGBTQ community, even with the ongoing pandemic.

Dunford said he will often see an LGBTQ child of middle school-age come in with their mother, and they’re both nervous walking in.

However, by the end of their visit, the child will feel comfortable, like they feel a sense of belonging.

Executive Assistant of Programs Devin Preston said that, on April 9 at the Salt Lake City location, a 19-year-old transgender man came into the center with his grandma and shared how the pandemic has been on hard on him.

Preston gave them both a tour and informed them about their resources, including the friendship circle going on later that night.

Preston was pleased to see the young man at the friendship circle.

Dunford said what he loves about Encircle is that they aim to help LGBTQ youth in middle school and high school in an effort to prevent suicide and homelessness. “And hopefully they’re able to live a badass, thriving, lovely life,” he added.

According to Preston, the four main objectives mentioned previously are applied into

everything the center teaches.

“We truly want the youth to feel like they can accomplish anything and be anyone they want to be,” Preston said. “We have no sides, only love for these youth.”

Knowing what it felt like to be an outcast, Preston grew up with two moms. While not fitting in with the LGBTQ crowd or the religious crowd, she had to learn how to belong to herself. That is what motivated her career choice with Encircle — they just felt like family.

“Encircle has been a way for me to find meaning, purpose and a sense of true belonging,” Preston said. “All of the staff, volunteers and guests at Encircle have accepted me for exactly who I am, and have never asked me to change or expected me to be different.”

As part of Encircle’s website, they host friendship circles, which is a virtual way that the LGBTQ community can connect with each other during the pandemic. It is a safe, affirming environment that ensures that participants’ voices are heard.

A session is available to watch on the website, just so viewers know what to expect.

There are friendship circles that are catered toward more specific groups of people, as a way of connecting and relating to each other. Some of those groups include gay male adults, LGBTQ+ young adults and lesbian adults. Friendship circles are hosted every weekday via Zoom.

During the friendship circle video on Encircle’s website, Executive Assistant of Operations Lakshan Lingam said, “We hope we can expose more queer people to more queer people, and we get to talk to each other and make more connections.”

were brighter, and they all reported they were doing better than at the beginning of the recording.

Lingam’s experience of coming out was not a happy time. Living in Provo and not being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, being an LGBTQ member was hard at first, until they found their community and family at Encircle.

“When I first came out, I was not doing too well,” Lingam said. “I was really sad, and I thought I had lost a lot of opportunities. I think my perspective changed as I spent more time at Encircle, and met more queer folks who are older and had already been through it. I started realizing that being LGBTQ is the best part of me. It’s not the only part of me, but it is such a big part.”

Encircle recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new resource home in Ogden on March 25. This will be the first home to be built as part of Encircle’s “$8 million, 8 houses” campaign, which began in February.

The campaign was made possible after a $4 million total donation from CEO of Apple Tim Cook, Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith, lead singer of Imagine Dragons Dan Reynolds and his wife Aja Volkman.

Weber State University put up a display of pride flags at campus entrances in support of the groundbreaking.

Encircle currently has locations in Provo, Salt Lake City and St. George, with more being built in Heber, Ogden and Logan. Encircle plans to expand to Nevada, Arizona and Idaho as part of their recent campaign.

Weber State University hosted a virtual webinar on April 7 as a part of a global dialogue series titled “Solve Climate by 2030.” The webinar was aimed toward empowering Utahns to make a difference in the race to reduce the effects of climate change and prevent extreme climate-related events from unfolding in the future.

The larger series is organized by the Center for Environmental Policy at Bard College, a liberal arts institution in New York state. The series includes webinars in 50 countries and 50 U.S. states, to create “a springboard for discussing regional climate solutions, energy justice and a Green Recovery,” the official website said.

Alice Mulder, director of WSU’s Sustainability Practices and Research Center, said the current decade is a critical window, one in which people can still take steps that will prevent the worst-case scenarios of climate change.

Students can take individual action by becoming more efficient in their use of energy and transportation, but a less obvious way to have a smaller carbon footprint is through eating more plant-based food choices, Mulder said.

“I don’t think people really recognize the connection between climate change and food,” she said.

The less meat that humans consume and the less food waste is created, the less carbon emissions will impact the environment.

The webinar also stressed the importance of legislation like America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act, which would protect a large swath of the Intermountain West as undisturbed ecosystems.

“It is important to understand the value of wildlands as, essentially, carbon sinks,” Mulder said.

The lands play a part in mitigating climate change, and leaving them undisturbed would keep a significant amount of fossil fuels in the ground.

The Red Rock Wilderness Act would be a leap toward another end-of-decade goal: According to the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, 30% of the nation’s land and waters must be protected by the year 2030 in order to prevent catastrophic collapse of natural ecosystems.

“Another important message is that climate change is something that is going to affect everybody,” Mulder said. “It was politicized, but in itself it is not a political issue.”

Ruth Kapp Hartz, a Holocaust survivor, was the keynote speaker for Weber State University’s Holocaust Remembrance Week on April 8.

The theme for this year’s Holocaust Remembrance is “be the light in the darkness.”

“It encourages everyone to reflect on the depth humanity can sink to, but also the ways individuals and communities resisted that darkness to be the light before, during and after the genocide,” Hartz said. “’Be the light in the darkness’ is an affirmation and a call to action for everyone.”

Hartz wanted the keynote’s focus to be about children, given that she was a child who survived the Holocaust. One and a half million children perished during the war, making their death rates higher than those of adults since Jewish children were met with death as soon as they arrived at the concentration camps.
