Weber Cares Pantry has been fighting food insecurity at Weber State University for the past 11 years. According to a Move For Hunger study, over 370,000 Utah residents experience food insecurity every year.

Healthaffairs.org did a study that revealed 29% of college students at four-year universities experience food insecurity.

Weber Cares Pantry is dedicated to help students get the nutrition they need.

“We provide meals and food for those experiencing food insecurity,” Mohammed Al Hagri, Weber Cares Pantry student coordinator, said.

The pantry is located in the Stewart Library, room 224, and is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Al Hagri said there is no shame in needing assistance or experiencing hunger. The pantry

is open to donations and volunteers to help extend their efforts even further. Donations and volunteer applications can be done on the Weber Cares Pantry page on the WSU website.

In addition to the pantry, students who are experiencing food insecurity or homelessness can find help off-campus. The Lantern House, Griffin Memorial Church, Catholic Community Services of Northern Utah, Hope Resurrected Church and the LDS Toothbrushes of all shapes, sizes and Bishop’s Storehouse and Cannery all offer colors sit in a bucket in the Weber Cares pantry. assistance to those in need.

“The best part is seeing the smiles on people’s faces,” Al Hagri said.

Weber Cares Pantry will continue to help students experiencing hunger and food insecurity. Assistance is available and there is no shame or embarrassment in asking for help.

Weber State University’s women’s soccer team ended last season with a 1–0 Big Sky Conference championship loss against the University of Montana. In the upcoming season, the Wildcats are chasing their first title since 2013.

“Finishing second in the conference tournament, I think we surprised a lot of people,” assistant coach Kendra Smith said. “Now the secret’s out a little bit of who Weber State is.”

After not reaching a Big Sky tournament match since 2018, the Wildcats finished the season with an 11–9 overall record and a 6–3 in-conference record, making them the fourth seed in the Big Sky tournament.

“A big thing for us is we were leading the

conference up until the last two games of the regular season, and we had a lot of players who hadn’t really been in that position before,” Smith said. “A big thing for us, and especially throughout the tournament, was getting a lot of these younger players that kind of opportunity that they haven’t had yet.”

Prepped for a first seed, Weber State lost the last two games of the regular season against Montana and the University of Northern Colorado. The Wildcats made a strong impression during their first game of the Big Sky tournament against the University of Idaho, beating the Vandals 3–0.

Weber State got revenge on the Northern Colorado Bears with a close 3–2 win before falling to the Grizzlies.

“I think the girls are hungry to have those

moments again,” Smith said. “There’s kind of that passion that’s been reinstalled and getting that close to winning a conference championship that I think they’re going to come back ready to go.”

During Weber State’s offseason, the Wildcats have been working on finding their rhythm after dealing with the loss of graduated teammates.

“We ended up losing eleven players,” Smith said. “It’s definitely been an adjustment, but we’ve been working really hard as a team, trying to improve what we’re doing as a group and getting everybody on the same page.”

The list of departing players includes fiveyear veteran Sadie Newsom. During her tenure at Weber State, the midfielder received three All-Big Sky Conference honors.

While the list of players that won’t be returning for the 2022 season is vast, Coach Smith is confident that both the returning players and new recruits will lead Weber State to win a conference championship.

“We feel really confident in our 2022 class and the girls coming in this fall,” Smith said.

“We’ve really recruited each of them to serve a specific purpose on the team, and they each have very specific roles for what we’re trying to do here.”

The Wildcats will face Salt Lake Community College for a season opening exhibition at the Wildcat Soccer Field on Aug. 11 at 7 p.m.

From working as a climbing wall attendant for the outdoor program, to leading campus tours, to working in the university’s IT department as a programmer, Weber State University students have access to a wide range of employment opportunities on campus.

Beyond just providing students with opportunities to generate income, WSU’s Career Services department and its staff also want to provide students with employment opportunities that will strengthen and expand their professional skill sets to better prepare them for their future careers.

Sara Seefried is the student employment coordinator for WSU’s Career Services department; she oversees student career readiness on campus while serving as a resource for both student employment supervisors and students seeking employment opportunities on campus.

Part of Seefried’s job involves training the staff and faculty who supervise student employees on how they can teach their employees skills that future employers will be looking for in prospective employees.

When asked about the benefits of working on campus, Seefried cited the opportunity that students have working with employers

on campus who are trained to help them strengthen the skills that employers in the future will be looking for.

“All students have those skills, they just don’t know how to articulate them yet,” Seefried said. “Our student employers really work with students on that.”

In addition to the opportunities student employees have to learn skills that will help them in their professional careers, Seefried said research shows that on-campus employment may also yield benefits in terms of students’ academic success.

“All the research out there says that if you work on campus, you’re more likely to graduate, and you graduate at a quicker pace than students who work off-campus or not at all,” Seefried said.

Seefried attributes this correlation between on-campus employment and academic success to the relationships that students build with staff and faculty.

“When you’re working on campus, your employer feels that your education is important, so they support you in that,” Seefried said.

Lian Ulbrich, a WSU student who’s studying to join the healthcare profession, is employed on-campus as the student leader liaison for Asian American initiatives. In tandem with her paid position at WSU’s Center for

Multicultural Excellence, she serves as sitting chair for the Asian Student Involvement Association.

Ulbrich’s job as student leader liaison for Asian American initiatives offers her opportunities to work closely with communities she’s passionate about while developing her professional communication skills. She cites the greatest benefits of on-campus employment as added scheduling flexibility compared to other jobs and the chance to develop professional skills that will aid her in her post-graduate professional career.

Students who are considering on-campus employment, according to Seefried, should seek out positions that involve skills that they’re interested in improving. However, when it comes to finding and applying for an on-campus job, both Seefried and Ulbrich admit that the university’s job application page could use some work when it comes to ease of use.

ment last year to Sacramento State University, head coach Kylie Louw’s Lumberjacks are poised to return with their high-powered offense this season. Last year’s team led in shots and were second in points. Midfielder Maddie Shafer will return next year along with star defender Abby Donathan.

Weaknesses: Obviously, Northern Arizona is also dealing with some of their best players graduating. Forward Sam Larberg and midfielder Mikhail Johnson won’t be returning this season. However, the Lumberjacks are also dealing with momentum issues. The team hasn’t won a Big Sky title in over eight years. This season, they’ll need to prove that they can handle the tournament to break their streak.

The 2021 Big Sky women’s soccer tournament was filled with massive upsets and close games. Strong teams like the University of Northern Colorado lost early while Cinderella story teams like Weber State University were able to make it to the championship game. With a new season coming, it’s time to take a look at the strengths and weaknesses of each team in the Big Sky conference.

University of Northern Colorado Strengths: After their senior-led team lost unexpectedly early to Weber State in the Big Sky tournament, the Bears were forced to make moves. The team signed players like

Alex Michael, Dylan Drennan, Maddie Smith and Olivia and Ellie Grayson. Led by head coach Tim Barrera, these young players are starting their careers under the leadership of the winningest coach in Big Sky soccer.

It’s hard to place where the Bears will land in the long run. Northern Colorado’s new roster will enter each match with unpredictability. The Bears also have home field advantage in the tournament next season.

Weaknesses: It’s impossible to look at this team and not think of what they’ll do without forward Lexi Pulley. The Big Sky Offensive MVP graduated. Their dominant core, consisting of Pulley, forward Taylor Bray, defender Maddie Duren and defender Erika Hall, is breaking up. Although a young team can make surprises, that senior leadership

will be missed, especially during the tournament.

University of Montana Strengths: Any team coming off a championship run carries confidence. The Grizzlies weren’t immune to losing great graduating players, but they were able to keep some of their key stars including goalie Camellia Xu, defender Allie Larsen and midfielder Sydney Haustein. Despite losing defenders Taylor Hansen and Caitlin Rogers, this defense still has what it takes to be elite in the Big Sky. Weaknesses: The Grizzlies lost three of their best players in Hansen, Rogers and forward Taylor Stoeger. Although Montana has a good scorer in Haustein, they’ll need to find someone to help lead the offense if they want a shot at going back to back.

the championship game only to fall to the Montana Grizzlies by one goal. It was a success the team hadn’t seen since its regular season championship in 2018. With a good mix of returners and newcomers, the team looks poised to make noise in the tournament again under the direction of head coach Craig Sanders. The Wildcats also have star goalkeeper Mekell Moss returning next season along with defender Hailey Price.

Weaknesses: Like most teams, the Wildcats are losing elite players. Midfielders Sadie Newsom and Taylor Slack are hard to replace, along with the 9 other athletes they’ve lost. Without players like Newsom and Slack, the team will have to find a way to maintain their high-powered offense in 2022.

University of Idaho Strengths: Finishing fifth in the Big Sky last season and losing 0–3 to Weber State early in the Big Sky tournament, the Vandals are likely to seed high in 2022. With an offense led by forward Jadyn Hanks, this team has the experience and veteran presence of a potential title contender.

Weaknesses: The Vandals will need to recover from the loss of goalkeeper Avrie Fox. Goalies Katie King and Hallie Byzewski will

fill the position next season. Byzewski had a great game against CSU Bakersfield last year, but neither goalie has a lot of Big Sky in-game experience.

Sacramento State University Strengths: The Hornets made the tournament by the skin of their teeth last season, but they made sure to do something with their spot as they beat Northern Arizona 1–0. Although it was a team with a lot of senior talent, two freshmen were able to stand out last season. Midfielder Abigail Lopez and forward Dana Restom will return this season, helping Sacramento State break its offense away from the middle of the pack.

Weaknesses: Sacramento State seemed to stay in the middle of the pack in almost every big statistical category last season.

Losing most of their games by 2 points or more last season, the Hornets will have to strengthen their defense in 2022.

Eastern Washington University Strengths: If any team that didn’t make the tournament last year has a chance at making a title run this season, it’s Eastern Washington. This team was too young in 2021 but comes into 2022 with depth and experience. Unlike their Big Sky opponents,

most of Eastern Washington’s best players are returning next season, including their ace midfielder Madison Kem. Weaknesses: The Eagles offensive production was lacking last season. They finished last in shots and 8th in goals. Becoming a high-powered offense is something Eastern Washington will have to do to make last season look like only growing pains.

Portland State University Strengths: Like Eastern Washington, Portland State has their best players returning this season in midfielders Lucy Quinn and Sienna Higinbotham. It’s a team with a great amount of newcomers and returners that can make some noise this season.

Weaknesses: While their offense was middle of the pack last season, they’re defense was their weakness. The Vikings allowed the second most goals of any team in the Big Sky last season. Goalkeepers Enya Hernandez, Sidney O’Billovich and Natalie Cunningham will need to change the nar-

rative if Portland State is going to succeed this season.

Idaho State University Strengths: Idaho State was extremely young last season. Although they’re still a very young team this year, they’ve played together, giving them an advantage that most teams lack. Their lone Big Sky All-Conference team member Gabby Warta will return this season as a sophomore.

Weaknesses: This team is built more for 2023 than it is 2022. It’s still an incredibly young team that didn’t finish high in any category other than saves last season, and that was thanks to goalkeeper McKayla Wetsel who won’t be returning.. Idaho State has to finish in the tournament, or at least in tournament contention, to show that their current lineup is working.

When I heard about the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, I was at a loss for words.

My brain stopped working, and I had no idea how to process this explosive information.

At first, I was convinced that it wasn’t true, that I had misread the headline of the news article. I was absolutely stunned as I sat on the edge of my bed for what felt like an eternity just trying to come to terms with our new reality.

I was stunned; not because I didn’t think the Supreme Court could make this decision, because let’s be honest, the justices made it very clear that they had the power and the determination to overturn Roe v. Wade when the draft was leaked in May. I was stunned by the myriad of emotions that swept over me; there were so many that I couldn’t quite articulate what I was feeling or thinking. There was so much fear, dread, devastation, heartbreak, anxiety, sadness and rage rushing through my mind and body.

I was, and still am, terrified of what this ruling now means for millions of people in the U.S., myself included.

I feel so betrayed by those who hold the power to make massive, life altering deci-

sions such as this. I am a 21-year-old, cisgender woman, and have so many years left in my childbearing life — the amount of “what if” situations are endless.

Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Samuel Alito Jr., Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Clarence Thomas all voted to take my rights to my own body away from me.

The Supreme Court Justices operate in one of the most powerful institutions in this country. The selection of the nine justices is supposedly a thorough and fair process.

But as far as I can tell, it doesn’t seem like this process has been successful in terms of fairness as of late.

We, the people, do not get a say in who is chosen for a position on the Supreme Court.

The president is the one who nominates someone to the Supreme Court, and that person is confirmed by the Senate; after they are confirmed, they hold this position for the rest of their life or until they retire.

The job of the justices is to make sure that they are making decisions that protect and reflect the wants and needs of the people.

Because the justices don’t campaign or run for re-election, the president has total control over who gets this position. So whoever we elect, we must place all of our trust in them, trusting they will make the best choice for us.

We want people who are going to vote and rule in ways that are just, fair and un-

biased; nothing less. If the justices can’t do those things then we don’t want them and they certainly don’t deserve to be in a position with so much power. If the last two or three weeks have shown us anything, it’s that the justices who hold office right now are not concerned about making decisions that will protect and serve us - they are only interested in serving their own agendas.

They are not fit to serve this country in the Supreme Court any longer, especially the six who voted to overturn Roe. The overturning of Roe will have horrendous ripple effects for years to come. Abortions aren’t going to stop due to the lack of safe and clean access to them. This certainly doesn’t mean there will be more healthy and happy babies born.

The only thing these actions guarantee is there will be more people who decide to take matters into their own hands. Horror stories of women using wire hangers, drinking bleach, using drugs and alcohol, or even resorting to physical violence, self inflicted or not, will start becoming more and more normalized. People are going to resort to anything and everything to terminate their unwanted pregnancies.

The six justices who voted to overturn Roe

have successfully ripped away the lives of so many people. Necessary, lifesaving healthcare has been stolen from the people who need it the most.

The overturning of Roe doesn’t necessarily mean that abortion is completely illegal, but it might as well be with the decision being turned over to individual states.

So far, 13 of the 50 states have enacted their trigger laws - putting them into effect the moment Roe fell. Unsurprisingly, Utah was one of these states.

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Utah’s trigger law makes almost all abortions illegal, except in a very limited number of cases.

SB174, Utah’s trigger law, states that a woman can only get an abortion if her life is at risk; if two doctors who practice “maternal fetal medicine” agree that the fetus has a defect that is both uniformly lethal and diagnosable; and if the pregnancy was caused by rape or incest.

Of course, these scenarios come with some caveats.

The only birth defects that would qualify as being severe enough to allow an abortion are those that cause “an individual to live in a mentally vegetative state.”

thing because some old, bitter men with superiority complexes think they should have control over everything, every woman does?

What about their lives?

It seems to me that lives aren’t being saved — they are being brutally ripped away.

The people who made this monstrous decision on June 24 are well into their mid50s, some of them are even in their mid to late 70s.

This decision does not affect them or their generation in the slightest.

Overturning Roe has and will continue to affect millennials, generation z and everyone who comes after us.

To be frank, we need people who were born within the last two decades to be representing us.

We need people who are connected to the world as it is today, not the world as it was 30 or 40 years ago when they joined SCOTUS. Going back in time is not an option and this ruling sets us back nearly 50 years.

On July 8, President Joe Biden signed an executive order that is meant to help restore some abortion access to people across the country, according to NPR. While this is a valiant effort on Biden’s part, it’s too late and doesn’t go far enough to protect reproductive rights.

This executive order doesn’t fully restore the rights that were taken away from us. It allows protection of patients and providers of abortions, allows for mobile clinics to be set up on the borders of states where abortion is now restricted and, according to NPR, “seeks

to convene private, pro bono lawyers to offer support to people crossing state lines to get an abortion.”

The order also asks the secretary of Health and Human Services to compile a report in the next 30 days outlining more ways in which medication, abortions, IUDs, emergency contraception and other reproductive care can be protected.

While this order could be considered a step in the right direction, it’s still not enough. Roe was overturned, and our rights to safe and appropriate reproductive care were stripped; this order feels as if it is just a band-aid on a bullet wound.

incest and rape can get abortions, but only if their doctor can verify the rape or incest has been reported to law enforcement.

So not only do the victims of such heinous crimes have to endure the trauma of rape or incest and then end up pregnant by their abuser, but to top it all off, they must report it to the police — who may or may not believe them — to relive that trauma and then have someone decide if they are “worthy” enough to get an abortion.

Luckily though, Planned Parenthood Association of Utah filed a lawsuit on June 25 to try and block Utah’s trigger law from taking effect according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

On June 27 the judge granted their request for a temporary restraining order, allowing abortions to continue in Utah for the time being, but this is only temporary.

On top of these trigger laws, more states have already passed laws that severely limit someone’s ability to obtain an abortion.

Other states have been passing laws that make it illegal to terminate a pregnancy after six to eight weeks, which is rarely enough time to realize you are pregnant. The ramifications of the Supreme Court’s decision are ever-evolving, as we have seen these past two weeks.

So far, nine states have completely banned abortions: Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, West Virgina and Wisconsin, according to NPR. Many other states have already or are in the process of severely restricting access to abortions.

To put it simply, these laws are asinine.

Why do strangers get to decide what I do with my body?

Why should I be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to full term?

Why should an old-ass white man with a bitter superiority complex be able to tell me what to do?

None of this should be legal or have been able to happen.

If you’re against abortions, don’t get one.

These “pro-life” representatives love to spout that they’re doing this for the “better of humanity” and that they’re “saving lives,” but what about the mothers who want a child but giving birth has a 90% chance of killing them? What about the young girls who are raped by their creepy uncles and then forced to carry the pregnancy to full term? What about the women who are poor and marginalized and don’t have enough money or resources to drive to another state to obtain the healthcare they should be privy to in the first place? What about the thousands of women who now can’t do a damn

In less than two months, Weber State University football will be back in Stewart Stadium kicking their 2022 season off against the Western Oregon University Wolves on Sept. 1.

The Wildcats were originally set to start their season on the road against James Madison University at Bridgeforth Stadium in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The two schools signed a home-and-home series back in 2019, and the Dukes last visited Ogden on Sept. 18, 2021.

The Wildcats were not able to return the favor after the Dukes announced their move to the Sun Belt Conference, officially as of July 1, and now play in the FBS. JMU requested to be released from the series after the move was announced.

With the Wolves replacing the Dukes, this will be the first matchup between WSU and WOU after Weber State announced the finalization of their schedule on March 31.

Western Oregon is a Division II school that belongs to the Lone Star Conference and is out of Monmouth, Oregon.

The ‘Cats will hit the road for their second game of the season and visit instate foes, the Utah State Aggies, in Logan on Sept. 10.

The Aggies have put up a historically tough fight for the Wildcats and have collected 14 wins against the Wildcats singular win in 1978.

The last matchup against the two schools was in 2016 when the Aggies collected a 45–6 win at Maverick Stadium.

To close out their preseason schedule, the Wildcats will host Utah Tech University, formally known as Dixie State, on Sept. 17.

This will be the third matchup between the schools and the Wildcats currently sit on a 2-game winning streak against the Trailblazers.

WSU last traveled down to St. George and handed UT a 41–3 loss in their 2021 season.

Kicking off Big Sky play, the ‘Cats will travel to UC Davis and take on a different team of Aggies.

The Wildcats previously fell to UCD 17–14 last season but were victorious in their last trip to California with a 36–20 victory.

Weber State will come back to Ogden and host the Eastern Washington Eagles.

in 2021 when the ‘Cats caused an upset against the then-No. 3 Eagles with a 14–6 win in Cheney, Washington. The ‘Cats sit on a three-game winning streak against EWU. Following their game against EWU, the ‘Cats will have a two-game road series against Portland State on Oct. 15 and Montana State on Oct. 22.

To close out their Montana series, the Uni-

versity of Montana ‘Griz will travel down to Ogden on Oct. 29.

Between COVID and the rotation of teams to face in the Big Sky, the ‘Griz and the ‘Cats haven’t faced off since 2019 when Weber State knocked UoM out of the playoffs and advanced to the FCS Semifinals.

Like the ‘Griz, Sacramento State hasn’t faced the ‘Cats since 2019. The Hornets were also handed a loss from the ‘Cats 36–17 dub in Sacramento, California.

NAU last saw the Wildcats in 2021 during an unprecedented spring season for the conference.

After the last few years of being a dominant presence in the FCS division, the Wildcats shocked their fans with loss after loss

and finished the season 6–5 overall.

With people looking for change and not finding it in Matt Hammer, the Wildcats hired Mickey Mental after Hammer left the program.

Mental is coming from Notre Dame College, a Division II school out of Ohio. They

spent their final two years at the helm of the program but had spent a total of 13 years involved in the program.

Like the Wildcats, the Falcons played in the 2021 spring season. They finished ninth in the country. However, the offense finished sixth in the country for averaging 40.6

points per game.

The Wildcats football program will put Mentals experience and play style to test on Sept. 1 against Western Oregon.
