The Department of Performing Arts at Weber State University held the Crushing the Curve: Fever event via YouTube on Oct. 29, called “Theatre Fever Spooktacular.”

From performances to set designs and filming, the event was fully produced by Weber State’s Associated Arts of the Theater, which is a student-run organization of theater performers and practitioners.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this performance, along with the rest of the Crushing the Curve series, was presented online through live streaming. The performers were also seen wearing masks.

Peyton Davis, marketing director for AAT, said that, despite the learning curve with these new regulations, he thinks it’s interesting that all of the training and techniques they’ve previously learned still apply.

Davis was one of the first performers in the event. He performed “No Good Deed” from the Broadway musical “Wicked.”

There were two recurring host characters named Tom and Thom, portrayed by Jacob Stubbs and Gabriel Priest, who were light-keepers that gave rules on how to keep a lighthouse, helping transition the show to each new segment.

Kelsey Allred presented a creepypasta, a horror-related legend, called “A Child’s Eyes,” which talks about children’s ability to see monsters and make rules to protect themselves from said monsters.

Other performances consisted of reenactments of musicals such as “The Wild Party,”

“The Addams Family” and “The Bad Seed.”

There were also song covers from artists such as Young the Giant, Fleetwood Mac and Kristin Chenoweth.

The event ended with footage of WSU students Estephani Cerros and Andy Nich ghost hunting at the Historic Wendover Air Force Base.

The material for Fever was initially filmed in September and was set to air on Oct. 1.

However, the hard drive where the files were stored was corrupted. Luckily, after a monetary donation from Ray Kimber, the students were able to recover the majority of the files.

“It’s been really unique to see the entire team just kind of band together and work to make this still happen, even though it seemed like everything was trying to get this episode or this performance not to happen,” Davis said.

The performance is available to view on the Weber State AAT YouTube channel.

Previous events of the series included a panel discussion with performance professionals and a behind-the-scenes look at WSU’s musical production, “Pippin.” Future events will include a dark comedy radio play, a premiere reading of new works created by WSU students specifically for digital theatre and a musical showcase about life and the world through art and song.

ABOUT ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

In the past, Alzheimer’s Foundation of America has been able to hold their educational conferences in person.

November is Alzheimer’s awareness month, and on Nov. 10, The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America will host a free, virtual, educational conference for Utah residents as part of its national Educating America Tour.

According to The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, there are 34,000 people in Utah living with Alzheimer’s disease. Across the U.S., there are 5.8 million people living with the disease; by 2060, that number is projected to grow to 14 million. It is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S..

The conference will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will include different sessions from leading medical, elder law and dementia care experts.

Special guest Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of The Dr. Oz Show, will discuss how Alzheimer’s has impacted his life and family.

There will be a discussion about proactive family engaged care by Dr. Troy Christian Andersen, who will discuss different medical and social services for individuals living with dementia and other dementia related illnesses.

Bruce W. Lee will lead a discussion about living at home with dementia, which will give

different tips to help people live their best lives as they deal with the life challenges dementia presents.

The final discussion will be on loneliness and social isolation in the older adult population, by Anne Asman.

Families and caregivers will be given different tips on how to handle and combat loneliness and isolation, an especially prevalent issue right now due to COVID-19.

Chris Schneider, director of communications at the AFA, said that the organization wants to let people know about the services they offer to help those affected by Alzheimer’s disease, “whether they’re caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, they’re dealing with it themselves, or they just want to learn more about brain health.” That’s why they are are holding their Educating America Tour.

“Knowledge is a tool of empowerment,” Schneider said. “Any situation you’re in, the more you know, and know about what’s available to help you, the more effectively you’ll be able to deal with it.”

Schneider said that when Alzheimer’s enters a family’s life it doesn’t just impact the person who physically has the disease, it affects the entire family, including children.

“Students have a very active roll in this,”

Schneider said. “A lot of them are serving as caregivers right now, or want to pursue a degree in being a caregiver, or they just want to get involved and help.”

Schneider said raising awareness is a huge part of helping and getting involved that makes a difference. He said that the AFA has a program called “Light the World in Teal” that encourages others to change their social media profile pictures to a teal hue and share links to information about Alzheimer’s disease and resources.

Teal is the AFA’s Alzheimer’s awareness color, though the official ribbon color of the Alzheimer’s movement is purple.

Sandy Silverstein, media relations manager at the AFA, said that November will also include a few more events for Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, such as the Alzheimer’s Virtual Walk in the Park throughout November, with a kickoff on Nov. 1. They will also conduct virtual memory screenings every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in November.

Silverstein also said the AFA just published a children’s book, titled “Dancing with Granddad: An Alzheimer’s Story for Children and Their Families,” to help parents talk to their children about the disease if they have a family member going through it;

Schneider said that if people have family members who struggle with Alzheimer’s, they shouldn’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help if they need it.

The AFA offers a 24/7 help hotline run by licensed social workers available in 90 different languages. The helpline can also help families find other services within their area.

Schneider said that AFA’s founder was a former caregiver whose mother lived with alzheimer’s in the ‘80s and ‘90s, who at the time felt like he had to deal with it alone because there wasn’t another place to turn to. He started the organization in 2002 “so other families didn’t have to go through this journey alone.”

The AFA’s mission is to “provide support, services and education to individuals, families and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias nationwide, and fund research for better treatment and a cure,” according to their website. The organization is headquartered in New York City.

President Brad Mortensen acknowledged the difficulties of this school year so far and expressed appreciation for student organizations that have carried on in spite of restrictions during a Town Hall meeting Oct. 28.

Mortensen mentioned the positive reception of this year’s stay at home homecoming, in particular the socially-distanced movie night on the football field, with gratitude toward those who planned and organized the event.

Mortensen highlighted the department of performing arts and their efforts to continue in spite of the inability to conduct performances in person. The department is currently working on “Crushing the Curve,” an online series exploring avenues of virtual performance.

On Oct. 15, the department presented “Crushing the Curve: Behind the Curtain,” a behindthe-scenes look at work done in preparation of the planned spring musical “Pippin.” The virtual presentation contained interviews with the performers and crew, pre-pandemic rehearsal footage and some scenes of the show being performed with stylized costume-matching facemasks.

The next presentation will be “Crushing the Curve: Alice,” a dark comedy radio play offered via live stream Nov. 5, 6, and 7. Orchesis Dance Theater will present “Dancing in the Stream” via livestream on Nov. 21. Tickets are free on the performing arts page at the WSU site.

“Instead of scrolling through whatever streaming service you might have,” Mortensen said. “Students should explore what fellow students at the performing arts center has to offer.”

Mortensen also addressed another challenging part of 2020 beyond social restrictions: anxiety surrounding the election. He reminded students, faculty and staff there is a ballot drop box outside of the Stewart Library if anyone needs to drop off a last-minute vote.

“This is a very divisive time in our country, for a lot of reasons,” Mortensen said. “Regardless of who is selected to be president for the next term, there will almost certainly be considerable unrest on one side of the political aisle or another.”

He urged mutual respect between opposing political views on campus.

“As an institution of higher education, if we can’t find constructive ways to talk about our democracy, I don’t know who we expect to do that,” he said.

The next Town Hall will focus on the university’s strategic planning and will be held virtually on Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. Student voices at Town Hall meetings are welcome and encouraged.

Throughout their time on the photo desk, they have been honing their craft and trying different camera techniques to give readers some ideas for taking their own pictures.

Hi, Robert here. This fall semester, BriElle and I have decided to take some photos for Halloween.

One theory about Halloween is that many of its traditions originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, according to history.com. Also, their traditions may have had Pagan roots. Other scholars think it began as a Christian holiday — All Hallows’ Eve — observed the night before All Saints’ Day. What began in the Celtic region or as a Christian holiday spread throughout Europe to Great Britain. As it spread, the traditions changed before they jumped the ocean and came to the United States.

Wikipedia listed some of the earlier rituals associated with Celtic harvest celebrations that are no longer practiced. They include special bonfires to ward off the devil or evil spirits, lighting candles in the home to welcome the souls of deceased relatives, mirror-gazing, pouring molten lead into water and dream interpretation.

A few of the practices still practiced and associated with All Hallows’ Eve are bobbing for apples, dressing in costumes – known as guising — and trick-or-treating with a jack-o’-lantern. The jack-o’-lantern, originally carved from a turnip, was thought to represent the souls of the dead.

Today, Halloween is commercialized in our society. One can walk along 25th Street in downtown Ogden and see store fronts decorated to lure in customers. Grocery stores have aisles full of candy for ghosts’ and goblins’ trick-or-treating. Department stores feature many costumes for children and adults.

There are many ways to have fun on Halloween: festive gatherings, visiting haunted houses, foretelling and eating treats. BriElle and I thought it would be fun to get together with friends from The Signpost and take some photos for the holiday.

Hello, BriElle here. We had a couple of different ideas for pictures that would be Halloween themed.

We decided to grab some props and hike up Waterfall Canyon in Ogden, Utah. We took all of our camera gear, a rainbow skull, some candles and a carved pumpkin.

We set up the skull and candles on rocks around the stream coming down from the waterfall. The skull created a nice contrast with the dark water and the dark colors of fall around them.

We also set up the pumpkin, putting some candles in it to make it a true jack-o’-lantern. We tried different angles and different placements of all of these elements to try and get the best photos.

Photography is all about trying to get a better photo than your last; I always try to take as many photos as possible when I am shooting something. You never know if something is slightly out of focus or if a different angle will make it look better.

The last photos we took were ghost photos.

We wanted to make a person look like a ghost within the picture. We did this by taking long exposure photos, about 8 to 10 seconds. We found this worked for us, but you can always do longer or shorter exposures depending on your lighting scenario.

The way you make someone look like a ghost is by having them stand in the frame of your photo for only part of the exposure. We had our subject stand in the photo for about 4 to 5 seconds, with the exposure longer than that.

By having the subject only in part of the exposure, this allows your camera’s sensor to pick up what was behind the subject along with the subject, making them look like a ghost.

We did a couple different ghost photos, including a ghost couple walking on a bridge and a ghost haunting a person on the bridge. It took a couple minutes to figure out the correct exposure and how long to have the person stand in the frame, but once we figured it out, we got some ghostly pictures from it.

Photography does not have to be an independent activity if you do not want it to be. It is always fun to get together with some friends and try new things. By doing this project with Robert and our videographer, Sarah, we have all become better friends and have grown stronger as a team.

There are tons of different things that one can do with photography; sometimes, you just need a ghostly friend to join you.

The 2020 U.S. presidential election will take place on Nov. 3, and, for many, there is a lot at stake.

Four major issues have helped shape the campaigns for the candidates: the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, immigration and the future of the Affordable Care Act. The pandemic had a direct effect on voting, forcing a greater reliance on voting by mail.

Between Oct. 13 and Oct. 27, voters should have received their ballots in the mail. To make sure their ballots are counted, voters needed to postmark them by Nov. 2, the day before the election.

Alternatively, voters can drop off ballots at any one of 13 drop box locations throughout Ogden and Davis counties until 8 p.m. on Election Day. Three drop boxes sit within proximity of Weber State University’s surrounding area: one at South Weber Family Activity Center, 1181 Lester Drive; one at the Ogden City Municipal Building’s parking lot, 2549 Washington Blvd and one at the main branch library in Ogden, 2464 Jefferson Ave. Additionally, students can drop their ballots on campus. The drop box location is between the Stewart Library and the Student Union.

Finally, voters can also drop their ballots off at their county clerk’s office or a polling location.

Voters also have the option to vote in person. Many early voting locations have closed, but the Weber Elections website says that on Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., registered voters can vote at the Weber Center located at 2380 Washington Blvd.

To learn where to vote in person, head to the Voters Search Utah page and enter your address.

On Nov. 3, the day of the election, the Weber County Fair Grounds — 1000 North 1200 West Ogden — is open to voters from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters must bring identification.

This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Weber County has urged voters to vote by mail.

Voters with disabilities may call 801-399-

8036 for more information about available accommodations. Any person, other than a boss, a candidate or a trade union representative, may assist a voter. Generally, a family member or friend helps a person with disabilities.

Each polling station comes with touch screens, which have large fonts, contrast, audio, voting pad and headphones. Although anyone can request them, they are designed to help voters with reading difficulties or find a challenge marking their paper ballots.

The Weber Elections website advises people who didn’t get a ballot to go to Weber County Fair Grounds from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. to request one.

The WSU football team has retaken the field for practices in preparation for the coming spring season.

After months of uncertainty due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the Weber State University football team is finally starting to see practice on the field consistently in preparation for the season this spring.

Many protocols and precautions — such as face shields on helmets, practicing in smaller groups, temperature checking and constant disinfecting of all equipment — are being enforced to ensure players are safe from a potential outbreak.

These protocols, restrictive yet necessary, aren’t keeping the team from setting their eyes on lofty goals.

After winning the Big Sky championship for the third year in a row and advancing to the semifinals of the FCS playoffs, many of the players are looking to take another step forward.

“When I first got here one of our big goals that we had was to

win the Big Sky championship,” Jared Schiess, senior defensive lineman said. “Now that we’ve been able to improve as a team, as coaches and players, I feel like we’ve moved from winning the Big Sky championship to having the main focus be winning the national championship.”

In order to take this next step, it will once again require elite play from the defensive unit, which was the best in the Big Sky conference and one of the best in the FCS. The Wildcats have a strong defense returning to the line this year. Four of the top five tacklers are back this year and nearly all of the secondary production will still be roaming the defensive backfield.

There are still some vacancies that need to be filled, especially when it comes to the pass rush.

The departed duo of Adam Rodriguez and Jonah Williams accounted for 18 of the defense’s 46 sacks.

With a defense that thrives in

pressuring the opposing quarterback and creating turnovers, the Wildcats will likely need defensive linemen such as George Tarlas, McKade Mitton and Schiess to step up in the pass rush if they want to see similar results this season.

But Schiess doesn’t expect the defense to skip a beat.

“We have a lot of experience on defense,” Schiess said. “Individually, there are playmakers on the field who make big impacts, make big plays, who can change games.”

An obvious obstacle that the defensive unit is experiencing as it prepares to take the next step is the unique, extended offseason, marred by the pandemic.

However, while not able to participate in organized team activities until recently and not knowing whether or not the season would even take place, the defense has been able to stay focused throughout all the uncertainty and maintain intensity at practice.

The team still doesn’t know when their first game is or who it’s going to be played against, but Schiess says everyone is taking it day by day and will be ready when the time comes.

Ultimately, Schiess says the unity among the team will propel them forward.

“The unity of a team like ours makes a huge difference. When you’ve played with the same players for three or four years, you build a really strong connection and I feel like it’s kind of like a family atmosphere. The unity of our team is going to give us the biggest advantage,” Schiess said.

That unity will be key as the Wildcat defense looks to take an already championship-caliber defense to new heights.

If you were to ask me who I thought was the best team in the MLB before the season started, I would have said the New York Yankees or the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Both teams have some of the best players in the league since the Dodgers and Yankees are the two teams with the highest payroll compared to the rest of the MLB. Cody Bellinger, Clayton Kershaw, Aaron Judge and DJ LeMahieu are just a few superstars on each roster.

This past offseason saw two major additions to each squad with the intention of increasing their chances to win the World Series.

Pitcher Gerrit Cole signed a whopping 9-year, $324 million contract with the Yankees during last offseason, which made me think they were instant contenders.

He has arguably been the best pitcher in baseball for the past few years and New York added him to their already-solid starting pitcher rotation that consisted of Domingo German, Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton and J.A. Happ.

As for Los Angeles, a blockbuster trade this year in February happened when the Dodgers acquired outfielder Mookie Betts and pitcher David Price from the Boston Red Sox. After the trade, Betts then signed a contract extension with Los Angeles worth $365 million for the next 12 years.

Even though Price opted out this season and didn’t play because of the ongoing pandemic, Betts was the most coveted part of the trade since he is regarded by many as the best right fielder in the MLB. However, one team thrived through the

regular season while the other disappointed.

As per usual, Los Angeles, yet again, were first place in the National League. But as for New York, usually at the top of the American League every year, had a poor season and ended up taking sixth place.

These teams always have the biggest expectations going into every postseason, but they haven’t had much playoff success in recent history since they have struggled to find consistency during their playoff runs.

The Yankees last won the World Series in 2009 and have been eliminated in the American League Division Series or Championship Series ever since.

Their playoff woes continued in 2020 as they were eliminated in the ALDS by the Tampa Bay Rays with the series ending 3-2.

But as for Los Angeles, they have finally done what many baseball fans would have expected.

You would have to go back to 1988 when the Dodgers last won the World Series.

However, they have been very close recently as Los Angeles has had two opportunities to be crowned MLB champions a few years ago. The Dodgers made it to the World Series in 2017 and 2018, but they were eliminated by the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox, respectively.

Some people would argue that Los Angeles should be the 2017 champions. Houston was involved in a cheating scandal where they stole pitch signs from their opposition. They saw what the other team’s pitcher planned on throwing and Astros players banged on a trashcan to let their players know what to expect when Houston was up to bat.

This wouldn’t phase them.

This year, the Dodgers swept the Milwau-

kee Brewers in the Wild Card Series and the San Diego Padres in the NLDS. With the combination of pitchers throwing straight heat and batters getting contact on the ball, Los Angeles easily handled their first two opponents in the 2020 postseason.

After that, the Atlanta Braves were the next opposition that the Dodgers had to get past.

This series was evenly matched, with both teams’ offense going full-throttle all season as Atlanta and Los Angeles led the league in runs scored: the Dodgers at 349 and the Braves at 348.

Los Angeles went down 2-0 early in the series, but the Dodgers came back big in game three.

In the third game, a MLB postseason record was shattered as Los Angeles scored 11 runs in the first inning. It was the most amount of runs scored in one inning in a playoff game.

The series went seven games with many twists and turns, but the Dodgers found a way to get past Atlanta 4-3.

Los Angeles would then move on to the World Series and play the Tampa Bay Rays.

Tampa Bay finished as the premier team in the American League with their pitching rotation undeniably the best that MLB had to offer.

Charlie Morton, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Ryan Yarbrough and their relief pitchers carried them all the way to having a remarkable season as their opposition found it very difficult to hit.

There were many instances where the games went back and forth as the Rays and Dodgers didn’t have many differences between each other. If the Dodgers won a game, the Rays won the next.

The series was 3–2 in Los Angeles’ favor and

Tampa Bay needed to put on a great fight in game six. It looked like they would as Rays starting pitcher Snell was terrific, giving up two hits and no runs while striking out 9.

But it all came crashing down when he gave up a single to center field in the sixth inning by Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes and that was it for Snell.

Tampa Bay’s manager Kevin Cash controversially pulled Snell out of the game when Betts came up to bat for the Dodgers.

Relief pitcher Nick Anderson came in for the Rays and the 1–0 lead that Tampa Bay held quickly vanished. Betts hit a double to move Barnes to third base. Then, Anderson threw a wild pitch away from catcher Mike Zunino and Barnes scored to tie the game 1–1.

Dodgers star Corey Seager then hit a grounder to Rays first baseman Ji-Man Choi and Betts scored the crucial run from third and the Dodgers took the lead 2–1.

The game ended 3–1 and the Los Angeles Dodgers became the 2020 World Series Champions.

Who knows what could’ve happened if Cash let Snell continue to pitch, but the decision to take Snell out of the game crushed the dreams of the Rays players and their fans.

For the Dodgers, the drought is over and they have finally reached the pinnacle of competing in the MLB: winning a World Series.

With most of the roster looking like it will stay intact, we could see a Dodger dynasty continue for years to come.

A new podcast presented by the economic development office called “Forging the Norsatch” aims to highlight, inspire and bring together entrepreneurs in northern Utah.

The bimonthly podcast, created by Guy Letendre, economic development director at WSU, is hosted by Letendre and James Taylor, WSU’s director of sponsored projects and technology commercialization.

The podcast is part of a larger vision the two share to bring together ideas, resources and networking under one umbrella.

It’s not just for small businesses and startups, but also anyone who is working toward the future of communities in the area north of Salt Lake City, or “Norsatch,” as the cohosts have affectionately dubbed it.

“We want to inspire more entrepreneurs and see more of them get going,” Taylor said.

In his role at the university, Taylor helps with grants, contracts and other steps in the creation of a new business.

“I help faculty spin their ideas out into the commercial marketplace,” Taylor said.

Letendre has been with WSU since 2018, when the position of economic development director was created to facilitate the university’s expanding agenda of community support and outreach.

Before he stepped into that role two years ago, he spent most of his time in private industry, in operations and supply chain management for biotech and transportation companies, including Autoliv, Alexza Pharmaceuticals and Infinia Corporation.

Letendre is also responsible for the creation of the Wildcat Seed Fund, a venture fund made for WSU students who need help kickstarting their small business plan.

The podcast has featured interviews with local entrepreneurs, such as Javier Chavez Jr., born and raised in Ogden. Chavez has created Cerveza Zolupez Beer Co., which brews smallbatch Mexican craft beer.

Sean Dehghani, of Santorini’s Greek Grill at Farmington Station, has also been featured.

Dehghani is from Sandy, Utah, and opened his first restaurant before finishing high school, which became Mykonos at City Creek Mall in Salt Lake City.

Aside from business owners, the podcast

also features business tips, such as how to validate your product and how to run social media for your business.

The state of Utah itself has recently seen unprecedented growth, which leads to endless possibilities for new business, according to Taylor.

“There is a lot of new energy coming into Utah now,” Taylor said.

The growth of the Hill Air Force Base has had a significant impact on the area’s expansion, especially in Layton, Clearfield, Riverdale and Roy. But among cities of the Norsatch, Letendre sees Ogden as one going through a rebirth.

Ogden has historically been a vital economic part of the larger region, before hitting a downturn during the early ‘90s, when several banks and big businesses left town.

“Soon, we had a new mayor who wanted to attract tech companies to Ogden,” Letendre said.

The tech industry was beginning to spring up in the area now known as Silicon Slopes, south of Salt Lake City. Letendre added that the mayor couldn’t get business into Ogden until stumbling upon Amer Sports.

Amer Sports is a holding company that owns several sporting goods brands, such as Salomon, Peak Performance, Wilson and Precor. Ogden is now home to the company’s North American distribution center.

Later came a distribution center for Scott Sports, an international manufacturer of mountain bikes, motorsports gear and other equipment. Osprey backpacks set up a distribution center in Ogden as well.

“All of this created a buzz about Ogden,” Letendre said.

The city is becoming a focal point for new sporting ventures, which naturally complements the area’s skiing, hiking and mountain biking opportunities. From a business perspective, Ogden has found its new brand image.

The new episode, airing Nov. 3, will feature Envy Wheels founder Jason Schiers, who is advancing the carbon bike wheel industry.
