Fifty students designed and managed the construction of the net-zero home in Ogden.

Weber State University’s student-designed net-zero home was officially unveiled with an unplugging of two purple power cords on Oct. 13.

Over 50 students from WSU, local high schools, trade schools and tech schools designed and managed the construction of the home with over 30 donors and sponsors collaborating to ensure the project’s completion.

Project Manager Janae Thomas said she has immense pride in the net-zero house because of the work she and other students accomplished to make it a reality.

“When I drive by this corner, every time I think, ‘We did it,’’’ Thomas said.

WSU President Brad Mortensen said part of WSU’s vision of sustainability is that sustainable efforts should not be kept on campus, and the net-zero house embodies that idea.

Tom Christopoulos, Ogden City’s director of community & economic development, said Ogden’s partnership with WSU on projects like this allows the city to try new things and learn which building processes work. Christopoulos said he hopes more net-zero houses can be built in Ogden.

“Our hope is that as we go forward, this will be one of many, many houses that we’re able to put into the neighborhoods here,” Christopoulos said.

Christopoulos said Ogden City has partnered with WSU on projects before the net-zero house. City officials hope that WSU and Ogden can continue to work together to redevelop Ogden’s neighborhoods.

“Ogden City is very happy to be a partner, and we hope we’re a partner for generations to come,” Christopoulos said. “We can continue to help build this community that we all are invested in.”

After the power cords were unplugged – a symbolization of the house not being plugged into the power grid – those in attendance were allowed to tour the all-electric home.

On Nov. 18, 1985, Washington quarterback Joe Theismann suffered a gruesome injury to his leg when he was tackled by three-time defensive player of the year Lawrence Taylor. Theismann broke his tibia and fibula and, at 36 years old, was forced to retire from football because of the severity of the injury.

Eerily, on the exact same date 33 years later, Washington quarterback Alex Smith suffered a similar injury to his leg when he was tackled by three-time defensive player of the year J.J. Watt. Smith broke his tibia and fibula and, at 34 years old, many thought the injury would end his career.

The similarities between Theismann and Smith’s injuries and the circumstances surrounding them seem almost unbelievable. But on Oct. 11, Smith did something to separate himself from Theismann.

After 17 surgeries, a battle with an infection in his leg that nearly cost him his entire legs and even his life, Smith took the field and played professional football once again, almost 700 days since suffering the injury.

Ever since I was little, I’ve been a fan of Smith’s. My family and I are University of Utah football zealots, and some of my earliest memories of watching Utah football are watching Smith play quarterback for the Utes.

In the early 2000s, Utah football was a program that was struggling. Seasons with high expectations ended in disappointment.

All of that seemed to change when Utah hired Urban Meyer to take over the program.

Meyer made many decisions that changed the trajectory of Utah football, but naming Smith as his starting quarterback was arguably one of the most impactful decisions he made.

The Meyer and Smith tandem went a combined 21–1 in the two seasons they were together at Utah.

Meyer left Utah to pursue a coaching career for college football giants like Florida and Ohio State, and Smith was eventually drafted first overall in the 2005 NFL draft, but those successful seasons opened the doors to a program that has only seen two losing seasons in the ensuing 14 years.

My admiration for Smith continued as he began his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers.

His first seasons with the Niners were tough, and many began to label Smith as a draft bust. But in 2011, he began to play like a first overall pick.

That year, Smith led the 49ers to a 13-3 record and its first playoff berth in eight seasons.

The next season, however, after Smith suffered a concussion, the 49ers handed the starting quarterback job to Colin Kaepernick, whom they viewed as a more dynamic player.

Smith was understandably frustrated with his demotion; anyone would be in that situation. But Smith put the team first.

He focused on not being a distraction and on being supportive of Kaepernick, who eventually led San Francisco to an appearance in the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Baltimore Ravens.

Following the benching incident of the 2012 season, I went from being a fan of

Smith as a football player to respecting him as a person.

He had every right to be upset. He was playing very well before the concussion occurred, so some might say the benching wasn’t very fair to him.

But he didn’t allow that situation to become a distraction to the team, and he was constantly supportive of the teammate who took his job away from him.

How can you not respect that?

Smith was traded the next offseason to the Kansas City Chiefs. In his five seasons as the starter, the Chiefs won 53 games and had four playoff appearances.

Before Smith’s fifth season as the starter for the Chiefs, Kansas City drafted a dude named Patrick Mahomes, whom you may have heard of before.

Once again, Smith’s job was about to be taken away from him. The Chiefs still planned to start Smith during Mahomes’ rookie season, but the franchise clearly signaled that they planned to go with Mahomes once Smith’s contract was up after that season.

How did Smith react to all of this?

As a player playing at the highest level, going into a contract year, knowing that the organization he played for was going to promote his backup the subsequent season, it would be understandable if Smith focused on himself, and made sure he got paid somewhere else the next season.

But he didn’t do that.

Smith thought outside of himself and his situation. He took Mahomes under his wing, taught him how to be a pro and made sure he did the best he could to mentor the young quarterback. Mahomes himself and many Kansas City coaches

have gone on record many times saying Smith played a critical role in the development of Mahomes.

We all know the things Mahomes has gone on to accomplish in his first few seasons as a starter.

I then went from respecting Smith as a person to considering him to be a role model for all of us who watch the game.

After handing the reins over to Mahomes, Smith signed a contract with the Redskins, where he eventually suffered the horrific compound fracture of his leg.

When I watched Smith’s injury occur, I was devastated for him. After everything he had to overcome in his career, it seemed unfair that he would suffer a potentially career-ending injury like that.

Given that he almost lost his leg and even his life as a result of the injury, it would be understandable if Smith decided to hang the cleats up and call it quits.

But Smith wanted to show his children that it’s possible for people to bounce back from nightmare situations. So, he got to work and began months and months of grueling rehab with hopes of returning to the field.

Even if his comeback attempts fell short, Smith explained he wanted his kids to see that he at least tried his very best and that there’s value in trying.

Well, this Oct. 11, against all odds, Smith completed his comeback to professional football.

In doing so, he surely inspired his children. And he also inspired me.

One of the changes is that the construction sites would no longer have a minimum size for apartment rooms.

This would allow for the greater construction of single-room and studio

apartments. Council member Luis Lopez was concerned with creating cheaper housing for lower-income workers; Montgomery noted that the new zoning is not a direct solution, but that allowing smaller buildings will help keep prices down.

The council accepted the new ordinance as amended in a unanimous vote at the end of the meeting.

OGDEN PLANNING COMMISSION

Ogden City Council moved to change zoning laws on Oct. 6 to allow for higher density housing than before.

For the past six months, the council has been investigating their zoning requirements and looking for ways to reform them to best suit the community.

The planning commission put together several suggestions of ways to improve multi-family housing in Ogden. The commission looked at surrounding cit-

ies and counties and their buildings to redefine the zoning regulations.

The goal of the commission was to create competitive and economic housing that still provides the needs of the community. The commission presented these changes to the council after ratifying them with a vote of 7 to 1.

The commission representative Greg Montgomery feels this program is “the right move for Ogden right now,” Richard Hyer added. “We don’t want this to be the end of the conversation. But we were pleased with what we created in

Joseph Richey, president of the Big Band Swing Dancing Club, found himself asking how dance clubs could safely hold events during a pandemic when COVID-19 became a global concern.

The club was set to begin hosting events spring 2020, but those plans had to change when COVID-19 shifted everything online in March.

However, with increased safety measures and regulations, clubs and organizations at Weber State have been given permission to hold activities.

The club took advantage of this privilege and held their first club meeting on Sept. 29 at Mt. Ogden Park. The meeting was held in person and via Zoom.

At the beginning of the meeting, Richey presented the rules that everyone would have to comply with to attend club events. These rules included a 50-person maximum at any

event, masks, social distancing and dancing with the same partner for the duration of the activity.

Some of these restrictions were put in place by the university, and some were decided by the club presidency as the best way to minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19.

“We want students to still feel safe and comfortable on campus, even with these additional guidelines and restrictions we have to follow,” said Heather Cimino, coordinator of clubs and organizations at Weber State.

Cimino also said she has been impressed with the response of the clubs and student leaders who are taking the situation seriously, even giving up some of the things they want to do, in order to keep their members safe.

The Big Band Swing Club is no exception.

Richey would like to hold community dancing events but knows that isn’t possible in the current situation.

Even with in-person activities being an option, some clubs have opted to stay virtual for at least the remainder of fall semester.

Spanish Club president Shannon Stephens noted that Zoom events this semester have been better attended than in-person events last year.

“We’ve decided to do all virtual, and it seems to have positively affected participation,” Stephens said. “Now, people can just stay home to join the meeting, which is really convenient.”

Ambassadors for the Entrepreneurship Club, including Ellie Fochtman, have an assignment to contact professors and attend virtual classes to promote the organization each week. Fochtman is embracing the changes and moving forward.

“We’ll adjust again when things calm down,” she said.

Similar sentiments were shared by the Student Alumni Association President Brianna Nordgren.

“We’re doing the best with what we have been given,” she said.

Nordgren misses being able to connect with people on campus, and she is hopeful that

more events can be held in person soon.

With a majority of classes being online this semester, outreach has been a challenge for clubs.

“It is hard to reach new members,” Nordgren said. “People have to actually open an email and join a Zoom with strangers, and that just isn’t very likely.”

However, Cimino has noticed that students are eager to be involved.

“There’s a desire from a large group of students that are craving that interaction and that in-person campus life,” Cimino said.

Of course, the future of in-person club meetings is uncertain with COVID as a developing situation, but for now, clubs and organizations are being optimistic and using the resources available to provide experiences for WSU students.

On Oct. 13, Browning Presents! featured Chloé Valdary, founder of the Theory of Enchantment, who spoke about her theory as well as the importance of the arts and pop culture in life.

The presentation was held virtually and moderated by Jo Blake, assistant professor of dance at Weber State University.

The Theory of Enchantment is an antiracism training program that teaches love and compassion, both toward oneself and others, led by the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. The three guiding principles are to treat people like human beings, not political abstractions; criticize to uplift and empower, never to tear down or destroy and root everything you

do in love and compassion.

The training uses pop culture to make connections between people and lessons, as well as connect to timeless ideas and theories from moral, philosophical and intellectual giants throughout history.

Valdary gave the examples of Nike, portraying an idea of the hero, strength, trying, overcoming and just doing; the Disney franchise, in which stories typically follow the hero’s journey of growth and portray visions for human society and Beyoncé, a favorite of Valdary’s, whose music contains certain life lessons and themes.

Valdary encouraged listeners to pay attention to the pop culture they gravitate toward because it’s often a reflection of oneself.

Valdary graduated from the University of New Orleans with

a degree in international studies. She said the degree often studied how to combat conflict, but she noticed that there was never anything about love. She wanted to focus specifically on love in conflict resolution, which inspired her to create the Theory of Enchantment.

Valdary has presented her training throughout the world as well as lectured in several universities across the United States. She has published in news publications and delivered a TED Talk titled “How Love Can Help Repair Social Inequality.”

Valdary said the use of “Enchantment” in the title was, first, inspired by Disney, especially because she uses pop culture in her teaching. Second, she also used the word for a part of its meaning: to awaken to the fullness of life, presenting a dif-

ferent and more open lens that illuminates more possibilities.

Valdary said her upbringing in a Seventh-Day Sabbatarian Christian family — a religion that she said is somewhat like Seventh-Day Adventists and other Christian religions, but also a little bit like Judaism — introduced her to a kind of outsider-insider, order and curiosity paradigm that made her aware of the multiplicity of cultures.

She also learned the value of curiosity and questions from her parents’ examples. Valdary said she hates the phrase “Curiosity killed the cat.”

During the presentation, Blake and Valdary spoke about appreciation for the arts and dance. Valdary said she holds the arts in high esteem, as the highest of all possible human endeavors.

to help individuals, society at large, etc., turn chaos into order and to turn the otherwise incoherent, disjointed aspects of life into an integrated spirit, and to bring meaning into one’s life,” Valdary said.

She related this idea of the highness of arts to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., which goes through African American history and contribution sequentially from floor to floor, with the arts con-

tribution being on the top floor.

She said the African culture, so deeply rooted in dance, brought a liberating spirit to Western culture.

Valdary also said a lot of external conflict between people often stems from internal conflict, and art can provide a kind of template that one can use to become whole, and therefore more able to better deal with conflict.

She said that it is important to believe in creation and life –

that even though life can create negative things, it can also create a lot of beautiful things, too.

Valdary said she especially loves improvisational dance and afrobeats music. She said the music and dance pull movements out of her and put her into a state of being that is unafraid and nonjudgmental, which is the way she wants to approach life.

During the presentation, Blake and Valdary also performed a little bit of improvisational dance

in the call and response form, passing the spotlight between each other for small periods of time.

Even during a pandemic, Weber State University students want an education. Student enrollment during fall 2020 at WSU has remained steady during the pandemic.

This semester, WSU has a total of 29,596 students. In 2019, the school saw a record-high 29,644 students enrolled, according to a press release from the university.

In other words, as an Oct. 9 Standard-Examiner article notes, those 48 fewer students amounts to a 0.2 percent decrease in enrollment.

The Standard-Examiner also noted that, of Utah’s eight higher-education institutions, four saw a decrease in enrollment, but WSU lost the least students this year.

Shaylee Stevens, in the Office of Marketing and Communications, partially attributes this steady student engagement at WSU to the university’s proactive approach in creating a safe study environment early on when the pandemic hit and its continued allowance for adaptations to the traditional educational system.

“A few things that have helped students enroll are the variety of course

offerings, accessibility of faculty and advisers and the continued support from the administration,” Stevens said. “Students are able to choose the option that fits their needs, and if they need any help or guidance, they can turn to the faculty and staff.”

The Standard-Examiner reported that in 2019, WSU marked a 5 percent increase from the number of students enrolled in 2018.

In 2020, the university brought in nearly 3,380 new freshmen to WSU, according to the same press release.

“I think the biggest draw has been flexibility,” Stevens said. “WSU has created versatile course delivery

options that meet every student’s needs.”

Students feeling apprehensive about pursuing higher education during the pandemic are no strangers to national news. Yet, pandemic or no pandemic, WSU has led in Utah’s higher education by allowing for students’ individual needs be met and faculty and staff are here to aide student’s during their stressful higher education paths.

Stevens noted that, even uncertain about the future, students are trying to stay positive and hopeful.

Eleven years ago, Mount Ogden Junior High students wanted both a sense of belonging and to learn more about their traditions, roots and culture. The Mexican Ballet was created, and it followed those same students to Ogden High School.

Six years ago, students noticed there was nothing like the Mexican ballet at Weber State University. The WSU Ballet Folklórico was then born.

“Since that time, we’ve tried to provide more opportunities for people from other countries,” said Mónica Rodríguez Mesa, Ballet Folklórico advisor and original member.

“We do Mexico yes, but we also have other countries like Colombia, Peru and sometimes Chile included in the ballet.”

The ballet also provides students with more than just dancing; they learn leadership skills, communication skills, mentoring and advising, according to the WSU Ballet Folklórico website.

Leticia Mata, a nursing student, has been

involved with the ballet since the very beginning. She said the ballet helps her feel closer to home.

“You often don’t see Folklore dances all the time, unlike when I’m back in my country,” Mata said. “It’s nice to see that we can teach others with our culture and who we are. Hopefully, we change people’s view of the Hispanic community.”

In March, the ballet suffered the effects of COVID-19. Many of its events were canceled.

Rosa Rodriguez, Ballet Folklórico secretary, said the group continued to meet virtually as much as they could throughout the rest of spring semester, but the sense of connection wasn’t quite there.

“A lot of people said they started to feel discouraged because we couldn’t meet face to face,” Rodriguez said. “For a lot of our members, the ballet is a safe haven where they feel comfortable expressing and being themselves.”

The pandemic has heavily affected the Hispanic community, and, as a result, the ballet lost some of its members. Rodríguez Mesa said that some of the students had to pick up

second or third jobs to help their families, and some chose to stay away as a precaution for protecting high-risk family members.

In fall semester, the ballet has continued to meet virtually. However, they recently started a petition to meet face to face. The petition was approved and, following CDC guidelines, the group was able to meet again on Oct. 13.

“I’m actually very excited to be out here again and have one-on-one practicing,” Mata said. “We’re taking the protocols seriously, we’re wearing our masks, hand sanitizing and maintaining our distance.”

Salvador Ceja-Monroy, a political science major who has been a member of the ballet for three years, said now that the ballet is back to meeting in person, he is most looking forward to practices.

“Practicing through Zoom was hard; I think through Zoom, a lot of members lost their motivation and in person we can keep each other accountable,” Ceja-Monroy said.

Maria Vasquez, a double major student in Spanish Translation and Public Health who has been a member of the ballet for four years, said she is looking forward to learning

different dances and getting back into a normal routine.

“I think people have this idea that we just get up and dance, and that we have big dresses and big makeup because of what people see on stage, but it goes beyond that,” Vasquez said. “It’s hours and weeks of practicing and dedication. Most of us don’t have a professional dancing background — we do this because it’s what we love and we’re passionate about it. We put our heart and soul into this.”

Members of the ballet agree that you don’t have to be Hispanic to participate in the ballet.

“The ballet is open to everyone who is willing to learn and participate,” Rodriguez said.

“My vision for the ballet is that we continue to add different cultures so that it’s not just the Mexican culture being represented.”

During the past eight months, countless companies and businesses have been adversely affected and forced to move their services to an online market.

This move has been particularly difficult for support groups, such as the Ogden Pride Center, due to the loss of community and outreach.

Despite pandemic changes, participation in the Pride Center’s events is at an all-time high.

For example, the center typically holds a festival and parade in Ogden in

September. Last year, there were about 1,800 attendants and vendors. This year, they decided to hold the event online to conform with CDC regulations, and the online parade had over 5,700 views.

Though participation is up, not everyone is excited to be online.

“It’s always nice that we can get together, but I much prefer actually meeting with people,” said Joseph Riley, an attendee of the online events. “We don’t have the same opportunities to laugh and hug and support each other.”

Brian Barnum, board president of the Ogden Pride Center, said this lack of community and access has been especially difficult for students. Typically, high

school students could go to the center after school anonymously. Now, with online school, leaving one’s house to go to the center could cause problems at home for these students if they haven’t come out to their parents.

With this in mind, the center has had to find creative ways to continue with their events in an online capacity.

Barnum announced that they are moving their Nov. 13 auction to a free, online, silent auction, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ogden Pride Center is planning to continue and expand its virtual influence through the winter. They even want to apply it to post-pandemic life by inte-

grating the video portions of their events into the in-person meetings.

“Being able to have that available to the community so they still feel part of the community, whether or not they can attend, it’s healthy,” Barnum said.

Volunteers are necessary to make large events possible, and the center is looking for all of the help and support it can get. Barnum said that they are currently looking for sponsors for and donations to their silent auction. Participation in the center’s events is also a show of support for the Ogden Pride Center community.
