GRADUATE IN STYLE WITH THE DIFFERENT TASSEL COLORS

As graduation approaches at Weber State University, seniors are preparing to don their black and purple regalia for one final celebration. However, on April 25, the stage will showcase more colors than just those traditional wildcat hues. Graduating students flicker an array of colors, yet many are unaware of what these colors mean.

From fashion to symbolizing religious devotion, wearing tassels has always held a special place in culture. In academia, tassels are a badge of accomplishment and status and carry with them long traditions.

Moving the tassel from one side of the cap to the other has become a time-honored tradition, marking the transition from undergrad to graduate. The following tassel colors represent these areas of study:

Applied Science & Technology: Black

Bachelor of Electronics Engineering: Orange

WSU ALUMNI SUCCESS:

PERIODONTIST DEVIN CHRISTIANSEN

When Devin Christiansen went to Weber State University in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, he had no idea that one day he would be the dentist for the Utah Hockey Club. While attending school, he spent his time studying, attending clubs and even tutoring a future NBA player.

Christiansen said he liked being close to home while attending Weber. He was able to commute to class while living in Bountiful.

“Being able to live at home was wonderful,” Christiansen said.

Christiansen also said he liked the small class sizes at Weber. They helped develop a tight-knit community of students, which helped him stand out when applying to dental schools. They also allowed him to develop closer relationships with his professors.

“When I applied to dental school there’s maybe ten or so of us that would have applied,” Christiansen said. “When you look at other universities around the country or even in the state, they have a couple hundred. So it was easy for me to stand out, you know, look good on a resume.”

Another part of Christiansen’s time at Weber was Weber’s pre-dental club. The

organization would invite dental schools to come meet and speak to the students. The events involved a presentation, networking and dinner.

Christiansen worked as a microbiology tutor while at Weber, a job that he said he enjoyed and got to know a lot of the student athletes.

“I would set aside time a couple times a week that I would tutor freshman and sophomore year microbiology courses,” Christiansen said. “Being a senior in college, I got to tutor those courses and got to know some of the athletes that way because they wouldn’t go to some of their classes because they were obviously doing basketball or other activities in sports.”

One student athlete that Christiansen tutored was current NBA player Damian Lillard. Lillard graduated from Weber State in 2015 and currently plays for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Weber was only the start of Christiansen’s learning journey. Christiansen received his bachelor’s degree from Weber in 2013 and went on to attend the University of Louisville’s dental program in Kentucky. While attending Louisville, Christiansen decided on his specialization in periodontics.

“Periodontal disease kind of just made

sense with my background in microbiology and bugs and things causing the bone loss around our teeth, and I loved the surgery aspect,” Christiansen said.

Periodontics is a field of dentistry that focuses on gum and jawbone health.

Christiansen’s duties involve treating periodontal disease, sinus lifts, bone grafts and tissue grafts.

After finishing his dental program in Louisville, Christiansen attended his residency program in Lincoln, Nebraska for three years at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Once Christiansen’s schooling was complete, he started his professional career in private dental practice. He later got an opportunity to work for the University of Utah School of Dentistry as the program director for periodontics.

Christiansen spends half of his work week building the university’s new residency program.

“The dental school up here doesn’t have any residency programs,” Christiansen said. “So I’m currently tasked with developing the residency programs and especially for periodontal disease.”

When he’s not developing the new program, Christiansen performs surgeries

and provides treatments for periodontal disease and its symptoms.

“I do most of the surgeries here at the university,” Christiansen said. “So if the students that are in dental school have patients who need periodontal disease treatment or you know, implants or whatever else it may be, then we do the surgeries for them.”

Weber State awards thousands of degrees each year to students like Christiansen. In 2024 Weber awarded 6,910 degrees to its graduating students. Christiensen said that new graduates should focus on staying persistent.

“Just never give up; keep working until you achieve your goals,” Christiansen said. “Set realistic goals and go after them, big or small. Just continue to keep your head down and go to work, and it pays off in the long run.”

“Simplemente no te rindas.

SENDING OFF SENIOR ATHLETES IN WOMEN’S SPORTS

One of the inevitable things about college sports is that the athletes are temporary and only have four or five years to play at the collegiate level. As the 2024-25 athletic season comes to an end, many Weber State University athletes are moving on to the next phase of their lives.

Weber State Soccer seniors bidding adieu are goalkeeper Hadley Harris, midfielders Lucky Phonharath, Mikayla Topaum and Alaina Wildenradt.

From Weber State Volleyball, opposite hitter Baylee Bodily, setter Kate Payne and middle blocker Liana Woodley are among those moving on. Payne and Woodley helped to win two Big Sky Conference regular-season titles, two Big Sky Conference tournament titles and an upset win over Bowling Green in the first round of the 2020-21 NCAA Tournament. Bodily would be a part of one of those titles, and Payne ends her career with two All-Big Sky First Team

honors, along with being tied for third in matches played, tied for first in sets played, second in assists and second in digs in school history.

From Weber State Women’s Basketball, forward Rose Bubakar and guards Kennedy Eskelson, Kendra Parra and Margarita Satini all finished their Wildcat careers this season. Parra, a standout her senior season, averaged 11.8 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game and 3.7 assists per game and received All-Big Sky Second Team honors along with a 30-point game against Sacramento State on Jan. 25.

From Weber State Women’s Golf, Isabel Gutierrez finishes her Wildcat career receiving All-Big Sky Second Team, finishing fourth in the conference tournament during her junior year in 2024. Guiterrez looks to improve on last year’s finish in her final year of collegiate golf.

From Weber State Women’s Tennis, Cindy Li etched her name into the Wildcats’ 2022 Big Sky regular season title and 2023 Big Sky tournament title.

From Weber State Women’s Track & Field, distance runners Danielle Brow, Lydia Felix and Laurie Murphy, sprinters Angelyca Chapman, Jasmine Devers, and Makayla Oliver, jumper Abigail Triplett, who recently came in second at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in the high jump, and throwers Alyssa Hansen and Kapuake’oke’oomele Pulotu, who came in first last season at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the discus will all be moving on. Finally, Weber State Softball thanks utility player Olivia Birkinshaw, third baseman Abby Grundy, who received AllBig Sky Second Team last season, catcher Eva Richardson, outfielder Gianna Memoli and pitchers Jayci Finch, Cali McCraw and Brooke Merrill. All of these seniors were part of the Wildcats’ 2022 season, in which they won both the Big Sky Conference Regular Season and Tournament. These athletes will be greatly missed at Weber State, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

SENDING OFF SENIOR ATHLETES IN MEN’S SPORTS

With the 2024-25 school year coming to an end, Weber State University men’s athletics are saying goodbye to many student athletes.

Weber State’s men’s football must say goodbye to linebacker Garrett Beck, wide receiver Jacob Sharp, defensive end Kemari Munier-Bailey and kicker Kyle Thompson, who set the point record at Weber State with 371 points. Joining this list are long-snapper Grant Sands, defensive tackle Steven Bryant and defensive tackle Zeke Birch.

From men’s cross country, Weber State is losing Bryce Anderson and Nathaniel Garner. Anderson was a captain for the team during the 2024 season with a PR of 24:56 at altitude at the Big Sky Preview Meet.

Men’s tennis sole graduate, Tristan Sarap, ended his sophomore season with a personal record in singles, ending the year with a 12-5 record. In the 2024 fall season, Sarap and Will Zulch were victorious at the Bedford Cup Tournament. This victory landed them at the ITA Tennis Masters.

Men’s track and field must say goodbye to mid-distance runners Bryce Anderson and Orion Barger, distance runners Joe Corbridge, Ty Davis, Hanokh Gailson, Taylor Knight and Peter Visser, throwers Ryan Johnson and Jake Weathers, sprinter Tristan Spalding and Alex Wheeler, who does sprints and jumps. With such a big senior class, the senior leaders are looking to pass the baton to the next young runners to lead this program better than they left it.

Men’s basketball team had five seniors this season, guards Blaise Threatt and Miguel Tomley, forward Dyson Koehler and centers Vasilije Vucinic and Alex Tew.

Threatt earned All-Big Sky 2024 First team, leading the team in points (20), assists (4.4), rebounds (5.8) and steals (1.9) in 32 games. Tomley transferred from Idaho State for his senior season. However, it was cut short for medical reasons, and he had to leave the team. Koehler suffered injuries throughout his senior year but could still play in 22 games and averaged 10 points. Vucinic played in 32 games his senior year and averaged a career high with six points a game. Lastly, Tew played 34 games in the season. Tew hit a buzzer-beater tip-in with under one second left to beat Eastern Washington on Feb. 27, finishing the game with 16 points.

We thank these seniors for all they have done for Weber State University and wish them the best of luck. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat.

SHOCKINGLY, COLLEGE GETS BETTER WHEN YOU MAKE FRIENDS

When I first stepped onto campus four years ago, it was a bit of a disaster. Despite so many warnings to park on campus before 9:30 a.m., I decided it couldn’t possibly be that bad. I promptly found out that everyone was, in fact, telling the truth and showed up late to my very first college class. A somewhat insecure 18-year-old, I assumed that everyone was judging me, and felt even worse when I introduced myself as a freshman to someone sitting next to me and they replied, “Yeah, I can tell.” I remember getting back to my car at the end of that day on the verge of disassociation, completely stunned at what I’d just been through. Above all else, I couldn’t quite help but feel that maybe I had made a mistake. I was commuting to school and I didn’t have very many friends on campus. When I checked social media and saw old high school friends

seemingly having the “traditional” college experience at Utah State or the University of Utah, I felt like I was failing. That I had somehow overlooked one important detail when selecting which university I attended: student life.

In the next two years, I tried many things to chase that certain feeling and aesthetic I felt like I was missing. I thought things would be better in my second semester when I was taking a general science course with some of my friends from high school. Then, I thought things were finally going to meet my expectations when I moved into University Village with those same friends. I had a great time during that era, but at the end of the day, things still didn’t feel the way I wanted them to.

By the spring of my sophomore year, I had basically given up on my idea of college. I just needed to get my degree and accept that I was anticipating a feeling that would never come. Ironically, that’s when things really started picking up.

I joined The Signpost as a culture reporter after already working on its Street Team as a social media manager for a semester, and it was one of the greatest decisions I’ve ever made.

During my time at The Signpost, I’ve had so many wonderful experiences that freshman Megan would never believe. I got to travel and experience San Francisco, Chicago, New York City and Philadelphia for the first time. I got to interview Rainn Wilson spring of 2024 when he spoke at commencement. I even got to attend and report on cool events like FanX and the Sundance Film Festival.

Most importantly, I found some of the coolest, smartest, funniest people I’ve ever met in my life. My friends at The Signpost mean so much to me that it’s crazy to think about how I didn’t know any of them just a few short years ago. I began slowly realizing that my time at Weber State University was now beginning to feel like that “college experience” I’d been yearning for.

I feel it when I go on Swig runs with my

friends, an activity that freshman me would be stunned to learn I picked up. I feel it when running a joke into the ground with them and laughing until it hurts. I feel it when looking back at all the memories I’ve

created–both the crazy ones like surviving a 13-hour drive to California and the day-today ones like making TikToks in our office. It is very bittersweet to close this chapter, but I take comfort in knowing that I’ve

gained many lifelong friends these past few years. I thank each and every one of them for letting me finally experience the type of college I’d dreamed of all those years.

All of this to say, I hope that anyone reading this will remember that not everyone experiences college — or anything in life, for that matter — the same way. Staying stubborn in the belief that life has to feel a certain way will only make that feeling you’re trying to achieve harder and harder to reach. Do what’s right for you and focus on what you want to do in the moment, and the rest will come.

Thank you again to everyone — friends, family and professors — who made Weber State feel more like home. I sincerely hope our paths cross again in the future.

WEBER

EGO TRIPPING AT THE GATES OF HELL

I graduated high school in May of 2021 and had plans to attend Weber State University that fall. Weber felt like a good option for me; I had already taken CE courses in high school through Weber, the university was close to home and it was affordable for me. I majored in film, a subject and industry I have always had a love for.

My first two years at Weber State felt uneventful, which was likely my own fault. In spring 2023, I earned an Associate Degree in Digital Media and felt that my time at Weber State was coming to a

close. I wanted to start looking at other schools to transfer to finish out the rest of my bachelor’s. As I got closer to finding a different school, however, something felt wrong. Through organizations like The Signpost, which I joined in spring 2023, and the handful of friends I made in the film program, I decided I shouldn’t give up on Weber just yet.

This ended up being the best decision I could have made. I have had so many meaningful and life-changing experiences since getting my associate degree two years ago.

I went on two study abroad programs that were some of the most fun I have ever had in my academic career. In spring 2024, I went

on a trip to Chicago with roughly 20 other students from the communication program. In Chicago, we developed social media campaigns; my group focused our work on the thrift stores in the city. This spring, I got the opportunity to travel to Austin, Texas, to attend the South by Southwest film festival, a festival I have wanted to attend for as long as I can remember. There, I got to meet with various filmmakers, industry professionals and journalists.

I joined Studio 76 in fall 2024, and no matter how hectic the work there gets, I have learned a lot about what it’s like to be on set.

I have taken two producer roles in Studio 76 productions, and each brought its own set of challenges and struggles. I have gotten the chance to work on advertisements, music videos and short films.

With The Signpost, I have gotten the chance to attend the Sundance Film Festival

and Fan X, interview important figures around Ogden, meet famous people such as Rainn Wilson and Nikole-Hannah Jones and, most importantly, discover a love for writing and film criticism. In my time at The Signpost, I have gone from a reporter to the culture desk editor and won an award from the Society of Professional Journalists. Through Weber Film Society, a club of which I am vice president, I have helped bring to life Ogden’s international film festival, “HiveFest.” In 2024, the festival brought over 100 people together to celebrate films from Weber State students, local filmmakers and international filmmakers.

Despite everything I have accomplished and doubts I’ve had in my four years at Weber State, I’ve learned that good things come to those who wait.

WIKTORIA’S CONCERTO OF LIFE

As an international student from Poland, coming to Utah meant leaving behind everything familiar, including my friends, language and even the way I experienced the world. Looking back, I can say my journey at Weber State University has helped me learn how to embrace unfamiliar change and appreciate the risky aspects of life.

I definitely underestimated the challenges of being an international student. From adapting to a completely different education system and weather to navigating suburban life, visa requirements, unfamiliar food and cultural shifts, every day brought something new to learn. On the other hand, I could never have imagined the opportunities that allowed me to grow in all areas of my life.

Before coming to Ogden, I had spent 11 years studying violin at public music schools in Poland, so choosing my major was easy. Along the way, I also discovered a passion for Spanish, which became my second major. Studying those disciplines turned out to be very different from what I was used to back in Europe. With time, I learned to adjust, make the best out of it and look for opportunities that would support my future goals.

One of the highlights of my college journey was performing as a soloist with the Weber State University Orchestra during my freshman year after being selected as one of the few winners of the Concerto Night Competition. I also had the opportunity to teach children’s orchestra and violin through the university’s String Project, an experience I wouldn’t have had in my home country, where music teachers typically need a master’s degree to teach.

Later, I also found a passion for marketing. I completed a marketing internship through the University’s Real Projects at R.C. Willey and worked as a student marketing manager for Weber State University Campus Recreation for almost two years. I will be

forever grateful for the skills I have learned that will certainly help me with my career.

Sometimes I wonder what my life would look like if I had never left Poland. It is a very strange feeling. I do know that the path I chose was the most difficult. I also realized I wouldn’t be able to develop all my various skills if I stayed.

As I graduate this spring 2025 semester, I look back and forward. I appreciate all the wonderful people and mentors I have met on my way who have shaped my personality, and I am excited for my future plans, including post-graduate studies in the United States or Europe.

If I was to give one piece of advice to any international student, it would be this: Get involved on campus and take advantage of all the opportunities. I truly believe that all the extra effort will be worth it in the end!

AN OPEN LETTER OF GRATITUDE:

TO THOSE WHO HELPED ME GET HERE

I began my journey at Weber State University seven years ago as a 21-yearold non-traditional student and secondgeneration Wildcat. I’m the daughter of an awesome single mom who attended WSU during the earliest years of my life. I remember picking concord grapes off the vines outside my preschool classroom in the McKay Education Building, and I can still smell the gunpowder from the fireworks that colored the sky at my first Pops Concert. I grew up on this campus, and it has always felt like home.

If you recognize my name, it’s probably from The Signpost, where I’ve worked on the graphics desk since spring 2022 and as the graphics editor since that summer. Between working full-time and my parttime coursework, I wasn’t sure if I could give The Signpost the attention it deserved. Nevertheless, I persevered, and now, words can’t explain how thankful I am to have been a part of the Signpost family for years.

To the staff of The Signpost, thank you for continually putting your confidence in me and allowing me to tell your stories on our pages. Because of your support, I leave with a national award for one of my front-page

designs and the confidence that I deserve it.

To Emi, thank you for being an amazing friend and co-editor. To Justin, thank YOU for always being someone I can always pick mutuallyrespectful fights with. To Xochitl, Matt and Izabelle, I know you all will do amazing work both with the paper and beyond into your respective careers.

To Jean Norman, who I know is reading this because it’s her fault I stuck with it so damn long, your never-ending support and tutelage has done more and meant more to me than I could describe in all the pages of this paper. From you, I learned more than the academic side of journalism; I learned

what it means to be an active participant in our society and how to amplify the voices of others through my work. Most of all, I learned I was worth all the confidence you poured into me.

Thanks to Jean’s advice, I began my multimedia journalism degree in 2022, which allowed me to take classes I loved at night and online. I found my love of communication in my first semester public speaking class, but now, I have a home in the Department of Communication with so many helpful and incredible people.

To Anne Bialowas, thank you for working hard behind the scenes to keep me on track

for graduation. To Sare Gardner, the unsung hero of the communications department, thank you for always answering any number of random questions and emails at what felt like the speed of light. To Deann Shepherd Carver, thank you for sharing your knowledge of strategic communications, which has been an integral part of my professional presence. To Nicola Corbin, one of the few regrets I have when leaving this campus is that I didn’t get to take more classes from you. I loved learning from you and the environment you facilitate in your classroom.

To Colleen Packer, Sarah Steimel, Stephen Salmon, Brett Warnock and the rest of the communication department, thank you for all the knowledge you shared with me. Whether it’s never being afraid to find a connection with a stranger or understanding my rights and responsibilities as a U.S. citizen, what you have taught me has made a huge difference in my life.

Beyond the Department of Communication, thank you to April Woods for teaching me self-love and compassion through some incredibly difficult times. Words can’t express my gratitude, but I want you to know that I carry on as a stronger person, thanks to you. Also, thank you to Clint Johnson for being the first professor to see my potential as a writer and for the recommendation letter that gave me the confidence to pursue professional writing. And, of course, to Jennifer Wilcox for helping me overcome one of my biggest fears as a non-traditional student: math. Somehow, you made me love it, and for any student needing a math class, take it from Wilcox. Her genuine care for her students is incredibly valuable, and I cannot recommend learning from her enough.

One final thank you goes to the people who I really wouldn’t have made it without. To my family, with whom I missed lots of time over the last seven years, thanks for working around my crazy schedule to ensure I’m included. Thank you to my friends for sticking with me through this insanity and always picking up where we left off. Thank you to my mom, Stacy, for being my biggest hero. I am who I am because of you, and I hope to continue to make you proud for years to come. To my brother, Milo, thank you for being strong when it matters most, for rescuing me more times than I can count and for the future rescues still to come. Finally, my love, my partner, my best friend, Morgan. Whether you acted as an impromptu cameraman, an always-willing

survey participant, a sometimes-willing test subject, or emotional support, you’ve risen above and beyond every task I’ve asked of you and of those I didn’t have to ask. You know me better than I know myself, and you have somehow always known the kind of support I need each and every day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and I love you forever and always.

I wrote this column this way to show the teachers and faculty of Weber State University that their work and effort directly impact the lives of their students. Bleeding purple doesn’t even begin to describe the dedication and genuine care I felt from every teacher I interacted with during my

time at Weber, and I promise it doesn’t go unnoticed.

To the students, I offer this advice: You can do this. Never give up. Regardless of your background, economic status, academic experience or roadblocks waiting to be thrown at you, you have thousands of peers ready to support you and tens of thousands of years of knowledge within these walls. Everyone here wants to see you succeed. Never be afraid to ask for help, and never be afraid to lean on others. Always remember that you are worth it, you can do it, and everyone here bleeds purple just for you.

MY TIME AT WEBER AS A SPORTS REPORTER

Since I first stepped foot on Weber State University’s campus, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Sports have always been more than just a passion to me; they have been a big part of my life. My time at Weber State and The Signpost provided the opportunity to turn that passion into handson experience. This came in the form of covering countless athletic events, traveling for assignments across the country and witnessing the energy of live sports from a perspective few get to see.

As a kid from Cleveland, sports were always a central part of my life. Whether watching SportsCenter, reading about my favorite Cleveland sports teams or playing the sports I loved, I knew from an early age that I wanted my career to revolve around them.

The Signpost gave me that opportunity. Covering Weber State athletics deepened my appreciation for the preparation, intensity and emotion behind every game.

One of the nicest perks this job has to offer has been the opportunity to travel as a sports reporter. Covering games on the road has allowed me to experience new venues, explore various parts of the country and navigate the challenges of realtime reporting. From watching the men’s basketball team take down a ranked Saint Mary’s team in Moraga, California, to covering their trip to Hawaii — their first since the 1960s — and

traveling to Seattle to watch the football team face off against the University of Washington, each trip has been an unforgettable experience.

However, sports journalism is about more than just the games; it’s about the people.

Working with The Signpost staff, interviewing athletes and coaches and learning from experienced reporters shaped my understanding of the everyday journalist. The late nights, tight deadlines and postgame interviews made me a better writer and a more wellrounded journalist.

As my time at Weber State comes to an end, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have had. To my professors, mentors, editors and the athletes who shared their stories, thank you. This job has been challenging, rewarding and everything I had ever hoped for.

For those considering a career in sports media, my advice is simple: Take every opportunity you can. Say yes to new assignments, push yourself to improve and find the stories that matter. Covering sports at Weber State University has reinforced that this is what I want to do. While this chapter is closing, it is only the beginning of what’s next.

The Signpost Sports Editor Collyn Cowles.

LEAVING SPACE FOR THE “UM”

From a young age, I never wanted to be a nobody; I wanted to be somebody, incapable of making mistakes and worthy of my own time. If you were a snot-nosed punk kid like me, you probably met your grandma’s mantra that “nobody’s perfect” with a sigh and a good old-fashioned roll of the eyes. Though I would protest the implications this statement had on a figure like Jesus, she would stifle my ignorance by affirming Jesus wasn’t a nobody.

Playing in a Christmas piano recital as a 5-year-old should constitute some form of perverse torture. Yet, there I played, wearing the eyes of a dozen parents like a cape, getting what felt like a sunburn from the limelight, crooning a crowd with the sexy melody of “Jingle Bells.”

This was before I learned what jazz was,

though, and with the not-so-graceful slip of one of my pudgy fingers, I hit a jarring D in place of my target middle C. Insert here the scratch of a record and the symphony of crickets that engulfed the following silence.

Unable to regain my composure after such an offensive error, I made like a tree and got out of there. I could not bear the weight of imperfection, and shattering the illusion, admitting my humanity, and putting that burden on my keen audience meant the complete failure of my character to my juvenile brain.

Today, I wear the experience of 16 more years under my belt, and it is my Walker Institute-ordained mission to sit in front of my computer screen for six hours at a time and edit the Just Ask Podcast.

Using Adobe Audition, I carefully skim through the words of our esteemed guests so they may appear as competent, as polished and as professional as possible. Sometimes, however, our experts are none

of those. Oftentimes, they are egregiously incompetent, unpolished and unprofessional (respectfully).

It is remarkably refreshing hearing someone with Obama’s level of commendation back up and say “Actually, can we try that one again?” Gradually, I began making changes to humanize my clients, and soon, it felt like I was producing a conversation instead of a speech, but isn’t that the point of college?

As I reminisce on my time at Weber State University, I’ve realized that giving space for the “um” has been central to navigating the narrow windings of my educational journey. The only way my decision to pursue a career in a broadcast direction could have been well-informed was to dance on the periphery of my preferred industry for three years before joining Studio 76.

It took classes ranging from botany to marketing, not taking an internship in Washington, D.C., working for an awful

summer sales company and finding community at The Signpost for me to realize where I do and don’t belong.

It also took placing trust in two incredible mentors, Claire Hughes, coordinator of the Writing Center and Mark Galaviz, coach of the Speech and Debate team, who relentlessly supported me in those times of “um-age.”

Now, I find comfort in transition. I believe shattering the illusion means affirming the character. I can affirm that admitting mistakes acknowledges there is room to grow because, sometimes, Jingle Bells should be jazzy.

I NEVER WOULD HAVE BELIEVED WEBER STATE WAS FOR ME

In the spring of 2021, I was getting ready to graduate high school, but more importantly, I was stressed about choosing a college to go to. After months of tears and deliberation, I reluctantly decided to commute and go to Weber State. I was mad and embarrassed that my fear of moving out led me to attend “just” Weber. Yet, here I am four years later, shedding tears about having to leave. My first day of college was nothing short of a nightmare. With an unwavering feeling of paranoia to be punctual, I accidentally walked in on an ongoing organic chemistry class. When everyone turned around to look at the freshman who had just interrupted their class, I had a sinking feeling that this

was an omen of what the rest of my time at Weber would look like. And for a couple of years, it did.

During my freshman and sophomore years, I pursued a degree in criminal justice because I believed that it was the practical thing to do. However, my heart didn’t resonate with it, and I was miserable. I felt so little enjoyment with what I was studying that I minimized the amount of time I spent on campus, making it difficult to make friends. These years emphasized my preordained thoughts about Weber, and with a desire to be done with this school, I ended my education with an associate degree.

After taking a semester off, I felt the urge to attend school again, but with my fear of moving out still looming, I knew my only option was to go back to Weber. This time, however, I wanted to make it a better

experience. I started out by picking a degree in something that genuinely interested me: journalism.

Off the bat, I could tell that this was going to feel much more like the college experience I had always envisioned. I then made the decision to join The Signpost, and I don’t think I could ever be more grateful for having made that choice.

I started as a culture reporter before becoming a copy editor and finally jumping in as the news editor. My freshman self would have never believed the number of friends that I made during my time on the paper. As I switched roles, I grew closer and closer to different people until I felt like everyone in the office was family.

Not only did my time with The Signpost give me the friends I so desperately needed, but it also allowed my confidence to

skyrocket. I encourage everyone to pursue the degree that interests them and to get involved in a co-curricular. Weber can be an amazing university if you’re willing to let it be.

I want to thank my friends at The Signpost for making my college experience better than I could have ever imagined. I want to thank my professors and advisers for all they did to teach me and prepare me for life. I want to thank my friends and family outside of the Signpost for their unwavering support throughout the years. I want to thank my friends on the news desk for giving me a semester I truthfully will never forget.

I’m so glad I gave Weber State a second chance because I couldn’t imagine a better place to have spent the last four years of my life.
