TxDOT urges Texans to find a sober ride this holiday season

Six years have passed since a drunk driver killed Azeza Salama’s fiancé and sent her and her two children to the hospital, but her memories of the crash remain as vivid as the day it happened. As peo ple celebrate the holidays with friends and family, TxDOT wants stories such as Azeza’s to remind everyone to always find a sober ride.

Last year, Texas saw 48,641 traffic crashes during the hol iday season—Dec. 1, 2021, through Jan. 1, 2022—which resulted in 433 fatalities and 1,695 serious injuries. Almost

a quarter of those deaths—23 percent— were DUI-alcohol related with 98 people killed and 236 seriously injured in drunk driving crashes.

“With everything going on in the world these past few years, we want everyone to be able to celebrate this joyous time of year without the tragic consequences of drinking and driving,” said TxDOT Execu tive Director Marc Williams. “Get together with family and friends and have a great time, but please find an alternative way home if you choose to drink. You have many options

available.”

Drunk driving crashes can be easily prevented, yet they can have serious physical, emotional and financial conse quences that can last for years. Designate a sober driver, call a taxi, use a rideshare service, stay put, call a friend or family member, or use public trans portation to ensure you get home safely if you decide to drink.

To encourage everyone to enjoy the holidays without drinking and driving, Tx DOT’s Drive Sober. No Re grets. campaign will launch

new PSAs on TV, radio, bill boards, social media and at establishments such as bars, restaurants and convenience stores statewide.

A series of events will also take place across the state with video testimonials from Texans like Azeza Salama. These stories feature people sharing in their own words of how they deal with the conse quences of drunk driving—ei ther as an offender or survivor. atural Christmas tree afficionados love the authenticity such trees provide during the holiday season. Natural trees also provide a unique aroma that can make hol iday celebrations feel more homey.

When purchasing nat ural trees, holiday cele brants, especially those who like to buy their trees in early December, may be concerned about keeping their trees fresh throughout the holiday season. The fol lowing tips can help trees last until the final present is unwrapped and the last of the egg nog has been con sumed.

• Buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, cele brants should cut their own

trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the season.

If it’s not possible to cut your own tree, the Nation al Fire Protection Associa tion notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided.

• Protect trees on the way home. The Tree Care Industry Association ad vises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. Wrap the tree in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season.

• Cut pre-cut trees be fore leaving the lot. Pre-cut trees can make it through the holiday season look ing their best, but buyers should request that em ployees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buy ers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they’ll need to make it through the season when they get home.

• Place the tree in water the moment you get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, place

it in water the moment you get home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the wa ter in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses, trees likely wonÕt need their stands filled more than once per day.

• Place the tree away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sourc es, such as radiators, fire places, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likeli hood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

A few simple strategies can help holiday revelers ensure their Christmas trees make it through the holiday season unscathed.

The 2022 holiday shopping season promises to be an unpredictable one. The labor shortage and supply chain issues are already throwing a wrench into holiday shopping. Electronics, toys, and other products will be (or already are) in short supply, and retailers are struggling to staff up as the shopping season nears.

Product shortages and increased online shopping are likely to result in even more online purchase scams this year. More than one third (37.4 percent) of all cams reported in 2021 were online purchase scams, according to the to the 2021 BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report. Shortages are likely to make purchase scams even more common as desperate shoppers turn to shady websites in hopes of finding this year’s must-have gift.

BBB recommends the following tips to “Shop Safe, Shop Smart” this holiday season:

-Research before you buy. Use BBB.org and shopper reviews to do your homework before paying. Also, read our tips for spotting phony reviews.

-If the deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. The top motivating factor for people who made a purchase, then lost money was price. Don’t shop on price alone.

-Beware of fake websites: Check the URL, watch for bad grammar, research the age of the domain, and search for contact information. See BBB’s tips for identifying a fake

website.

-Professional photos do not mean it’s a real offer. Respondents reported that website photos motivated them to engage with scammers, especially for pets/pet supplies, clothing/accessories, and vehicles.

-Make sure the website is secure. Look for the “https” in the URL (the extra s is for “secure”) and a small lock icon on the address bar. Never enter payment or personal information into a website with only “http” – it is NOT secure.

-Be careful purchasing sought-after products, especially during the holiday season. The risk of online purchase scams rises during the holidays because more people are making online purchases, and scammers offer the most popular products for the season at great prices.

-Beware of making quick purchases while scrolling through social media. Scammers have access to tools they need to learn about your buying behaviors, offering exactly what you want at enticingly low prices.

-Look for the BBB seal. BBB Accredited Businesses pledge to uphold the BBB Standards for Trust and to deal fairly with consumers. If a business displays a BBB seal, verify it by going to BBB.org.

-Use secure and traceable transactions and payment methods. According to BBB’s research, those who paid with a credit card were less likely to lose money. Be cau-

tious when paying by digital wallet apps, prepaid money cards, or other non-traditional payment methods. Learn more about payment types and how to use each safely.

-Shipment tracking information can be faked. Look closely to make sure it is a legitimate business. Avoid clicking on the tracking link; go to the ‘shipper’s website and type in the code to see if it is real.

-Count on BBB to help you “Shop Safe, Shop Smart.” More tips are available at BBB.org/holiday-tips.

In my neighborhood, some folks have skipped Thanksgiving and gone directly to the Christmas lights. There’s no doubt we all could use some extra cheer as we approach the end of 2021.

You can provide some extra cheer for those living with Alzheimer’s and for their caregivers as well this season. Here are some gifting ideas to help you get started:

Gifts for people with Alzheimer's in the early stages: Items to help remember things
