DPS launches campaign to fight fentanyl

This month, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) answered Governor Greg Abbott’s call to action for state agencies by launching a new public awareness campaign to highlight the dangers of fentanyl. The multi-pronged campaign includes posting informational signage in DPS buildings, public service announcements at driver license offices statewide and publishing a webpage offering valuable resources.

“Fentanyl is now the deadliest drug threat facing Texas and the nation, with thousands of innocent Texans and Americans losing their lives to this

clandestine killer,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “With help from state agencies, Texas is increasing efforts to stop Mexican drug cartels from smuggling this deadly drug into our communities, as well as raising awareness of the dan ger this drug poses, even with just one pill. I thank DPS for their tireless work supporting the recently launched ‘One Pill Kills’ campaign to keep Texans safe from this deadly scourge. The State of Texas is deploying all resources to address the growing national fentanyl crisis and help pre vent more innocent lives from being lost.”

Fentanyl makes its way into our communities as a conse quence of an unsecure south ern border. In March 2021, at the direction of Governor Ab bott, DPS launched Operation Lone Star (OLS) to help com bat that influx of drugs. Since OLS began, DPS alone has seized more than 350 million potentially lethal doses of fen tanyl statewide.

“The Mexican cartels have taken fentanyl and massed produced counterfeit pills to look like oxycontin, oxyco done, Percocet and other pills and people don’t know what they’re taking,” said DPS Di rector Steven McCraw. “They

think they are taking Adderall or something else and what they are really getting is a le thal dose of fentanyl.”

The goal of the department’s new public awareness cam paign is to boost Governor Abbott’s recently announced “One Pill Kills” campaign in a collaborative effort to reach as many people as possible. Signage detailing the dangers of synthetic opioids are being posted in more than 350 public facing DPS buildings across the state, including driver li cense (DL) offices and other state buildings.

Additionally, public services announcements (PSAs) will

begin playing in the waiting areas of 181 DL offices state wide later this month. These 30 second PSAs will educate viewers and provide useful resources in the fight against fentanyl.

DPS also published a web page dedicated to educating Texans about fentanyl and its dangers. This will serve as a resource where people can learn more about the deadly drug, how to talk to kids about the dangers, and other helpful information to provide Tex ans with the knowledge they need to protect themselves. Visit www.dps.texas.gov/onepillkills to learn more.

BBB advises storm victims to be on the lookout for ‘storm chasers’

Texas and Oklahoma were hit with an onslaught of severe weather, thunderstorms, and at least nine tornadoes on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. While we East Texans are no strangers to storm damage, the Better Business Bureau advises residents to be on the lookout for storm chasers who show up unannounced, offer to repair storm damage for a low price, require advance payment and make big promises on which they have no intention of delivering. BBB reminds consumers to be on the lookout for shady contractors looking to take advantage of storm victims.

“Encountering high winds, thunderstorms and the occasional tornado are a part of living in East Texas,” said Mechele Agbayani Mills, President & CEO of BBB Serving Central East Texas. “However, it also means it is important to be on the lookout for fly-bynight repair businesses who are ready to pounce on storm victims as soon as the weather breaks.”

BBB offers the following advice to homeowners before hiring a contractor:

-Check with your insurance company about policy coverage and specific filing requirements. Save all receipts if temporary repairs are necessary.

-Although you may be anxious to get things back to normal, avoid letting your emotions get the better of you. Don’t be pressured into making an immediate decision with a long-term impact. Be proactive in selecting a business and not re-active to sales solicitations.

-Take time to shop around and get at least three estimates based on the same specifications and materials. Check out references that are at least one year-old and verify licensing with local agen cies.

-Be wary of door-to-door workers who claim to have left-over materials from a job “down the street” or who do not have a permanent place of business. If sales people go door-to-door, check to see if your community requires them to have solicitation permits.

-Require a written contract agree ment with anyone you hire. Be sure their name, address, license num ber, if applicable, and phone number

is included in the contract. Read and understand the contract in its entirety, and never sign a blank contract. A copy of the signed contract is to be given to you at the time of signature.

If one estimate seems much lower than the others and it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Many flyby-night contractors’ below-cost bids seem attractive, but these contracts often are uninsured and perform sub stantial cancellation fees or liquidation damages are required if the homeown er decides not to use the contractor af ter insurance approval of the claim.

Never pay for work in full in ad vance. The Better Business Bureau recommends a consumer never pay more than half before the contractor starts repairs and don’t pay the remain ing balance until you are satisfied with the work. A good guideline is to pay by the rule of thirds: pay one-third de posit, one-third when the job is 50% complete, and one-third once the job is completed.

Hire locally whenever possible. Chances are, if the company is not

from the area, they are less likely to come back and make a repair should you find something they missed.

Remember, great businesses are out there. Always look for the BBB seal; it’s the Sign of a Better BusinessS Start with companies you can trust by going to bbb.org. To report fraudulent activ ity or unscrupulous business practices, please call BBB at (903)581-5704 or use BBB Scam Tracker.

Holidays are a time filled with family, friends and — perhaps most importantly — feasts. Traditional holiday menu items have the power to evoke warm memories of holidays past while continuing to bring people together year after year. For many, the center of that coveted holiday table would not be complete without a sweet and savory spiral-sliced ham. But what kind of holiday spread would it be without a plethora of delicious side dishes to accompany and complement the meal? Whether you prefer ham with notes of honey, nuts or fruit, make sure your dinner table boasts a variety of options that enhance its delectable flavor. Look for recipes that incorporate both traditional and unexpected ingredients for a holiday menu makeover. Doing so will keep guests pleased with familiar favorites, yet pleasantly surprised with the new variations.

Savory side selections

If you’re looking for a savory side that spotlights the distinct flavors of the season, butternut squash is an excellent choice. White Beans with Bacon and Butternut Squash is a perfect blend of savory, sweet and salty. Serve it alongside your favorite Smithfield ham — Honey, Caramel Apple or Pecan Praline glazed — for a true taste of tradition. For more great recipes, visit www.smithfield.com. A potato dish is also a must for many holiday spreads. Break away from mundane mashed potatoes and gravy with this recipe for Smashed Bacon Ranch Potatoes. Family and friends will line up for seconds when they get a taste of the ranch dressing and smoky bacon combination. Or, try this recipe for Green Bean Corn Casserole for another new twist on a classic holiday favorite.

OPENING DAY DEER HUNT

The opener has come and gone for the almost two million deer hunters in Texas and we all have our stories. Many will be reliving the experience of once again spending a couple days living the hunter’s lifestyle in the ‘wilds’ for months to come. Others will be busy after work this week putting venison steaks and roast in their freezer. Some were fortunate to harvest that wall hanger buck of their dreams and many connected with ‘their’ trophy in the form of a spike buck or doe for the freezer.

I am fortunate to live within a stone’s throw of some very good deer hunting in an area where big bucks are taken annually. My good friend, Kenneth Shepherd, lives about a mile down the road and owns some of the best land in the area for intercepting big rutting bucks this time of year when they are on the prowl. We hunt hogs together throughout the year and when he invited me to open the season hunting with him; the answer was an immediate yes. Kenneth has taken many trophy bucks from the area including a 172 inch typical a few years ago. Look up ‘trophy hunter’ in the dictionary and Kenneth’s picture should be there! There is an isolated 12 acres that is separated from the rest of Kenneth’s land by a creek. This little hotspot must be accessed by boat but the ‘getting there’ is well worth the effort.

There is something about

paddling a small boat down a remote creek to a hunting spot that I find exciting. When I round a bend of the creek, I somehow feel as though I’m the first to be there, the first to see that ancient oak growing along the bank. I wonder just how many years ago it was when a farmer left that old piece of rusty farm equipment on the edge of the field. With a 20 inch pecan tree growing up through the steel, it must have been a long, long time ago.

My buddies little piece of

whitetail heaven is bounded on one side by the creek and is connected on either side by heavy timber; it’s called a pinch point by today’s hunting nomenclature. Waterways are natural travel routes for deer and other game animals. Bounded by the creek and heavy cover on each side, this spot is a natural funnel for bucks that sometime travel several miles in search of a receptive doe. Any deer traveling along the creek must travel through this area. Years ago, my friend constructed

an elevated blind at a vantage point that allows good visibility for most of the land which is a mixture of open country and small groves of trees with enough cover to make deer feel comfortable crossing.

In my many years of deer hunting, I have taken only two bucks that scored over 150 BC inches. My hunting companion on this day has taken several 140 inch bucks on his land. As a matter of fact, bucks of this size are the average for a deer three years or older. A 140 inch buck is considered quite the trophy by most deer hunters, including yours truly, and I was excited about the possibility of taking one so close to home.

We spent some time in the blind the day before the opener. I was trying to get some footage of bucks coming to the rattling horns for our weekly TV show, 'A Sportsmans Life,' that airs on Carbon TV. After a few hours in the stand and rattling in a couple of these big 140 inch bucks, we were both excited to get in the blind well before daylight the next morning!

An hour before first light, we were paddling down the creek, spirits high and full of optimism. We knew the bucks were responding to antler rattling and that the rut was in its early stages. I don’t think that after six decades of deer hunting, I’ve ever been more excited and full of anticipation.

At first light, we spotted five deer at the feeder, doe and this year’s fawns. Then, we spotted

what I consider a BIG buck crossing the field about 150 yards out. A few whacks of the rattling horns caused him to pause and he immediately came our way, ears laid back and ready to rumble or maybe sneak in on two fighting bucks and steal the doe away!

“How big you think, Kenneth?” I inquired. “Oh, just a run of the mill good three year old, about 140 inches. Take him if you like, he’s a good deer”, was his reply. The buck was only about 70 yards out and I placed the crosshairs on that crease just behind the front shoulder. And then I paused. I had never before hesitated shooting such a fine buck but this time I did. It was 15 minutes into the season and I already had in my scope the type buck I’ve traveled across the country to hunt; one mile from my home!

During the course of the day, we rattled in a couple more good bucks and a big non typical management buck. The majority of my hunting career, I would have ended my hunt the first few minutes of this opening morning. I’ve never considered myself a true trophy hunter. I enjoy the venison as much as admiring the headgear a buck sports. Is my buddy turning me in a trophy hunter? The season is just getting underway and I’ve passed on a mighty good buck. But they get bigger around here, a lot bigger! We shall see!
