Refinery issues lead to higher gas prices
Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 21.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.82/g Jan. 2, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 8.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 5.7 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 1.4 cents in the last week and stands at $4.67 per gallon.
According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $2.27/g yesterday while the most expensive was $4.17/g, a difference of $1.90/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $2.27/g while
the highest was $4.17/g, a difference of $1.90/g.
The national average price of gasoline has risen 12.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.17/g Jan. 2. The national average is down 22.5 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 9.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.
Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years:
-January 2, 2022: $2.88/g (U.S. Average: $3.26/g)
-January 2, 2021: $1.93/g (U.S. Average: $2.25/g)
-January 2, 2020: $2.27/g (U.S. Average: $2.59/g)
-January 2, 2019: $1.94/g (U.S. Average: $2.25/g)
-January 2, 2018: $2.25/g (U.S. Average: $2.49/g)

-January 2, 2014: $3.13/g (U.S. Average: $3.32/g)
-January 2, 2013: $3.11/g (U.S. Average: $3.28/g)
Neighboring areas and their cur-
rent gas prices:
-Midland Odessa: $2.99/g, up 30.2 cents per gallon from last week’s $2.69/g.
-San Antonio: $2.77/g, up 26.8 cents per gallon from last week’s $2.50/g.
-Austin: $2.79/g, up 26.5 cents per gallon from last week’s $2.53/g.
“For the first time in two months, the nation’s average price of gasoline rose sharply last week, as extremely cold weather led to many refinery issues, shutting down over a million barrels of refining capacity, pushing wholesale prices up,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
“In addition, China’s reopening plans gave markets inspiration that global oil demand will start to recover, as China’s nearly three year COVID-zero policies appear to be coming to an end. While the jump at the pump will likely be temporary as most refiners get back online after cold-weather related issues, some regions like the Rockies may see more price increases than others as cold-weather shutdowns hit the region fairly hard, with one refinery likely remaining down through the first quarter of 2023. Most areas have seen the bulk of the rise already hit, but should oil continue to rally, more increases could be on the way.”

We often heat up some hot dogs or brats over the campfire embers, wrap them in light bread and add a little mustard or sometime I might bring a skillet full of vension steak and gravy. Then, after wolfing down a quick dinner and warming up by the fire after the hunt, we are on our way back home to a warm house. Hunting close to home will spoil a person!

BBB wants you to have a scam-free ‘23
With the holidays behind us, BBB has a few resolutions that can help you fight scammers, prevent identity theft, and find trustworthy businesses and charities in 2023.
BBB Scam Tracker is a great tool for reporting scams or finding out whether that email, text or phone call claiming to be from the IRS or trying to collect a debt was legitimate or a scam. Hundreds of thousands of scam reports have been filed nationwide since the inception of the BBB Scam Tracker program. BBB uses the tool to track scams and to report fraudulent activity to the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance for analysis and collaboration with law enforcement.
“In this day and age, you can’t afford to make mistakes,” Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Serving Central East Texas said. “Taking preventive measures is well worth the time and effort to keep from becoming a victim.”
BBB provides the following resolutions to help consumers position themselves to have a safe, scam-free 2023:
-Always check a business out with BBB before you buy. Not every business meet BBB Accreditation Standards and are qualified to use
an Accredited Business seal on their websites and at on their storefronts. Visit bbb.org to find BBB Business Profiles for nearly 4 million businesses across North America.
- Be skeptical of “job offers” that promise easy money. With high unemployment and long job searches common, scammers are targeting people desperate to find jobs. Beware of any job offer, work-at-home scheme or business opportunity that promises big money for little work and no experience.
- Always read the fine print—especially with “free” trial offers. Thousands of consumers reported to BBB after signing up for a “free” trial offer online that resulted in repeated charges to their credit or debit cards, sometimes amounting to hundreds of dollars every month. Read the terms and conditions of any “free” trial offer before handing over credit or debit card numbers.
- Keep your computer safe. If you haven’t already done so, install anti-virus software on your computer and check regularly for software and operating system updates and patches. Don’t open attachments or click on links in emails unless you can confirm the email came from someone you trust.
POLICE BLOTTER
-Never wire money to someone you don’t know. Many scams require that the victim wire money back to the scammers. Scammers know that tracking money sent via wire or placed on pre-paid cards is extremely difficult. Once you’ve wired the money, it’s nearly impossible to get it back.
-Fight identity theft. Shred paper documents that include sensitive financial data and dispose of computers, cell phones and digital data safely. BBB offers tips and checklists on what to shred, and hosts annual Secure Your ID events nationwide to help you stay safe.
-Ask BBB for help. Contact BBB if you have a disagreement with a business or go to BBB Scam Tracker if you have been duped by a scammer.
-Create a budget and stick to it. Setting a budget can help you stay afloat this year. BBB has advice on how to create a budget to help you get out of debt and stay out of debt at bbb.org.
-Fight fake check fraud. It’s easy for scammers to create professionallooking phony checks. Be extremely wary of checks that come with claims that you’ve won the lottery, are eligible for a government grant or have landed a job as a secret shopper. These are almost always scams.
-Get everything in writing. Verbal agreements are often hard for both parties to remember. Put all verbal agreements in writing to limit miscommunication and misunderstandings between what you expect and what the business delivers.
Please report fraudulent activity or unscrupulous business practices to BBB Scam Tracker. Remember, great businesses are out there. Always look for the BBB seal; it’s the Sign of a Better Business. Start with companies you can trust by going to bbb.org.
About BBB
BBB is a nonprofit, business-supported organization that sets and upholds high standards for fair and honest business behavior. Most BBB services to consumers are free of charge. BBB provides objective advice, free BBB Business Profiles on more than 5.3 million companies, 11,000 charity reviews, dispute resolution services, alerts and educational information on topics affecting marketplace trust. Visit bbb.org for more information. There are over 100 local, independent BBBs across the United States, Canada and Mexico, including BBB Serving Central East Texas, which was founded in 1985 and serves 19 counties.

Caution urged when using space heaters, furnaces and fireplaces
As winter weather grips much of the country, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning consumers about deadly hazards from home heating equipment, including space heaters, furnaces and fireplaces.
Two hazards of special concern are fires and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, and although these deadly hazards impact all populations, they disproportionally affect certain communities. According to CPSC’s 2017 to 2019 Residential Fire Loss Estimates report, African Americans have the highest rate of fire deaths, nearly twice the overall rate across the population. In addition, African Americans represent 23 percent of portable generator-related CO deaths, 186 from 2011-2021.
CPSC urges consumers to take safety precautions while keeping their home warm this winter.
Portable Heaters
CPSC estimates that portable heaters, including electric space heaters, were involved in an average of 1,700 fires per year, resulting in an average of 70 deaths and 160 injuries annually from 2017 to 2019.
Portable heaters can cause fires if they are placed too close to combustible materials, such as drapes, furniture or bedding,
so make sure to place them at least three feet away from these materials. Always plug electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet and never into an extension cord or power strip, to prevent overloading and causing a fire. Never leave portable heaters on while sleeping. Fuel-burning portable heaters should never be refueled while in use. Turn the heater off, and allow it to cool down before refueling.
A CPSC staff report found that portable heaters can also present a hyperthermia (overheating) hazard to consumers, particularly children, people with disabilities and senior citizens, who may be more susceptible because of their limited ability to act or react to the elevated ambient temperature. Hyperthermia can result in death. Don’t leave portable heaters running unattended in a confined space around infants or individuals with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities.
Furnaces, Fireplaces and Chimneys
Have a professional inspect all fuel-burning heating systems, including furnaces, boilers, fireplaces, wood stoves, water heaters, chimneys, flues and vents each year.
Fireplaces can cause fires if the chimney is cracked, blocked or coated with creosote, or if sparks and embers reach
flammable materials. CPSC estimates that fireplaces and chimneys were involved in and average of 15,800 fires per year, resulting in an average of 20 deaths and 50 injuries annually from 2017 to 2019.
Fuel-burning heating systems, including furnaces and fireplaces, are a potential source of CO, which is an odorless, colorless and poisonous gas known as the "invisible killer." These heating systems can cause CO poisoning if they are improperly installed, poorly maintained, have defective or blocked venting systems or are misused.
Generators
A gasoline-powered generator used during winter weather-related power outages can produce as much CO as hundreds of cars. CPSC estimates that from 2011-2021, more than 800 people died from CO poisoning associated with generators, over 103 in 2020 alone, a record number that is expected to climb as CPSC is still receiving data for that year.
Use portable generators outside only and place them at least 20 feet from the home with exhaust pointed away from any nearby building. Never use a generator inside a home, basement, shed or garage.
Never refuel a generator while it is run-
ning. Turn it off, and allow the generator to cool down before refueling.
Use flashlights instead of candles
During a power outage, use battery-powered flashlights or lanterns, rather than candles, to light the home. If candles are used, never leave them burning unattended.
Smoke and CO Alarms
Working smoke and CO alarms save lives! Install smoke alarms on every level of the home and inside each bedroom. CO alarms should be placed on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Alarms should be battery operated or have battery backup in case of a power outage. Interconnected alarms are best because, when one sounds, they all sound.
Test the alarms every month to make sure they are working. Replace batteries at least once every year, or install smoke and CO alarms with sealed, 10-year batteries.
Check for recalled products
Before using household products as the colder weather arrives, check to see if the products have been recalled at www.cpsc. gov/recalls. If a product has been recalled, stop using it immediately and contact the recalling company for the remedy--a refund, repair or replacement.

LOOKING BACK AT 2022
LUKE CLAYTON Columnist
Like all of you I’m sure, the past year provided great times in the outdoors that we will never forget as well as a few challenges. Looking back on the past twelve months, it’s the many positive experiences that I best remember. Funny how that works, the overwhelming positives always seem to negate the few negatives. As an old outdoors writer, I still sometimes suffer from a case of wanderlust. I enjoy going new places, meeting new friends that share my love of the outdoors. In retrospect, it’s the new friends that I make that I remember more than the fish I caught or the game I might have taken. Folks that have a love for the outdoors are some of the finest people on the planet, regardless where you encounter them.
I’ve had the opportunity to fish the pristine waters of the far north up in Saskatchewan with the fine folks at Tazin Lake Lodge and I’ve hunted and fished with wonderful friends close to home. Looking back, the experiences blend into a fine memory that I often ‘relive’ in thought. No need for a counselor when life’s problems arise when you have fond memories to recall. On the occasion I might get in a foul mood or indulge in a bit of self pity about something of little consequence I simply recall that big bull moose my buddy Jeff Rice and I saw while fishing with a great guide up in the far north or possibly that nice “home buck” I took close to home with my friend Kenneth Shepherd.
Making new friends is a trait that I have always been gifted with. There are those we meet that we instantly enjoy being around and with whom we share a kindred spirit. A huge benefit of being in the outdoor media is meeting lots of new people, some of which become lifelong friends. Take the Cotton family for instant. David Cotton and his father Edgar read my outdoor column in the
newspaper and had a passing idea of who I am but we didn’t get to know each other until this past fall when I was invited to their Becker Bottoms Ranch to hunt deer. I’ve had the opportunity to hunt with these fine folks several times and to date have not fired a shot at a deer. I was present when my friend Jeff Rice took a fine trophy buck. I’ve come to enjoy our quick, simple ‘after hunt’ meals back at camp and this father and son have become great friends.
I was fortunate to be present to help celebrate Edgar’s 82nd birthday. I know few 80 year olds that not only took a
fine bull elk in Colorado this fall but shot what I refer to as a big “witching hour” whitetail buck this past week. While hunting with the Cottons a couple weeks ago, Edgar spotted a giant buck during the waning minute of daylight. There was not enough light to clearly make out the scope’s crosshairs and back at camp I named the deer the ‘witching hour buck’. A couple days ago, David text me a photo of his Dad with a very nice buck he had just taken just before shooting light faded, his “witching hour” buck! These are fine memories that I hope I never forget, memories that I can rekindle years from now when I’m in a rocking chair telling stories to my great grand children.
Even closer to home I was fortunate to take a fine 10 point buck during early rifle season while hunting with my friend Kenneth Shepherd. Kenneth is about 15 years my junior but we share a lot of the same traits and one of them is a love for
First Missionary Baptist Church
everything outdoor related. I think I do pretty good keeping up with him in the woods, for an old timer! When he asked me to join him this fall hunting some prime whitetail habitat within a mile of my home, I was thrilled. We enjoyed some great time together on several hunt, watched some nice bucks and each of us managed to put mature, heavy horned bucks on the meat pole.
When it comes to fishing, I was a blessed to fish with some of the finest guides in the business, also great friends. Tony Pennebaker at Tawakoni and I enjoyed several trips for catfish that were the centerpiece for some fine fish fries. I always enjoy fishing for stripers with my long time friend Bill Carey and his son Chris up on Texoma. Bill began his guide service, Striper Express almost 40 years ago and now it’s the largest and oldest guide service on the lake. I did a lot of fishing with one of my newer friends, Brandon Sargent on Lake Ray
Hubbard. Brandon and I bonded the first time I fished with him and now consider him part of the family. He is one of the ‘newer’ guides in north Texas that is quickly building a great reputation.
As I look back on the past year, I am also busy planning for what’s ahead. The first Saturday in March, we will host the Fourth Annual Outdoor Ren de Voux in Greenville at Top Rail Cowboy Church. The event is on 14 oak covered acres. Folks that have never attended often ask what takes place at the event. We always have several campfires burning, live music all day, chuck wagon cooking, lots of free booths with folks marketing everything from hunting and fishing trips to jeweler. If you would like to be an ‘official’ part of the event, contact me at 214 435 1816 or Pastor Charlie Nassar at 903-217-3378.
