Years of motherhood has taught much of our team one thing—tiny fingers and slamming doors are a tragic combo. We've seen our fair share of tearyeyed moments over pinched fingers, and no one likes a cabinet that bites back! Something as simple, and often overlooked, as soft-close hinges is a total game-changer. They keep little hands safe, the peace intact, and best of all—eliminate yet another source of bangs and clatters. Because let’s face it, kids bring enough noise without the cabinets joining in!

Sometimes, bold moves pay off.

We moved quickly, focusing on impact. We didn’t do everything, but we did a lot—and fast. One of our favorite choices? Painting the exterior black. A little avant-garde, sure, but paired with the brass accents, it caught the light just right and gave the home a striking, modern presence.

This home had a rough start—purchased by a couple with plans to renovate and stay, only to have life pull them in another direction. They were suddenly left with a home in disrepair, mounting holding costs, and the pressure to break even.

In the end, it sold beautifully. And the couple? They sent a note to everyone involved, full of gratitude. Because design isn’t just about how something looks—it’s about helping people land on their feet.

With a $350K budget, we couldn’t do everything—so we concentrated our efforts where it would count most, starting with the exterior to maximize curb appeal. Inside, we made one thoughtful but impactful change: the door to the primary suite.

Front Door One of the first places we love to focus on? The front door. A beautifully crafted, custom door with unique hardware can make a serious statement—but doors can get pricey. Filoli is one of the many great gifts of the Peninsula, dating back to 1917 when it was built for William Bowers Bourn II as a summer retreat. It opened its 654 acres to the public in 1975 and has been the site of countless events, exploration and enjoyment for locals and visitors from across the globe.

Beyond the 54,000 square foot Georgian-style mansion, English Renaissance Gardens and Gentleman’s Orchard, there are Natural Lands and six distinct ecosystems. These ecosystems include redwood groves, grasslands, oak-madrone forests, chaparral, grasslands, a reservoir and natural springs and creeks.

There is a one mile self-guided trail that will take you through some of this natural beauty, including an opportunity to cross over Fault Creek Bridge, where you technically leave the North American Plate for the Pacific Plate, crossing the famous San Andreas Fault.
