Dear Friends,
Welcome Friends,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the start of our 2024 season! We are so grateful that you have chosen to share this time with us. After all our months of planning and weeks of rehearsal, the final and most crucial ingredient in the magic we create is you. Your laughter, your gasps, and even your rapt silence provide the spark that ignites the stage for a unique experience at every performance.
Though it is said to be bad luck to quote from this play or even speak its name in a theatre, "The Scottish Play" remains one of Shakespeare's most popular works, and we are thrilled to present this riveting tale of ambition, power, and madness on our Main Stage for the first time in two decades.
I am also excited that this production highlights on a grand scale STNJ's important and impactful work as a true teaching theatre. Art and Education are equal parts of our mission. Over the next few weeks, we will welcome thousands of young people to the Kirby Theatre for discounted matinee performances — many students experiencing the power of Shakespeare and live theatre for the very first time. Many of our patrons — maybe even you — will partake in our engaging audience enrichment and lifelong-learner offerings connected to the play, including post-show Symposia with the actors, a pre-show Know-theShow chat, or our popular Shakespeare Book Club. And I am most proud of the fact that nearly 70% of the adult company and all our youth actors on this production are alumni of our artist training and education programs. The deep commitment to excellence in arts and education that Bonnie J. Monte instilled in the company 34 years ago remains at the heart of who we are today.
Whether you are a long-time patron, or this is your very first time at The Shakespeare Theatre, I hope today’s performance inspires you to join us many more times this season. In fact, we created this season with you in mind. From Shakespeare masterworks to beloved literary classics, from unique special events to new programming for kids, there is something for everyone ages 5 to 105 this year. Stop by our box office or visit our website to discover what theatrical treats we have in store. Did you know you can upgrade your single ticket today to one of our flexible subscription packages and get more while paying less? Ask one of our friendly patron services representatives; they’ll be happy to help you with that and to tell you about our many other offerings.
Most importantly, if you like what you see today, please be sure to tell your friends, colleagues, neighbors, fellow parishioners, local shop owners, manicurists, deli clerks, city council members, dogwalkers, and anyone else you run into. I’ve heard for decades that we are “New Jersey’s Best Kept Secret.” Though I'm sure it was meant as a compliment, we would prefer to be a secret no longer. Not only are you the crucial ingredient that sparks our work in the theatre, but word of mouth from you is the single best way to ensure that we continue to build back stronger after the pandemic. With price points to meet every budget (check out “Ways to Save” on our website), our doors are open to everyone! I am eager to see new and returning patrons of all ages and from all backgrounds find joy, magic, and connection at The Shakespeare Theatre this season, and your assistance can help make that vision a reality.
If you like what you see today — and I certainly hope you do — please be sure to spread the word. Word of mouth remains the single best way to bring new folks to the Theatre and to ensure that your Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is around for generations to come. With price points to meet every budget (check out "Ways to Save" on our website), our doors are open to everyone!
We have many events still ahead this season, including Neil Barlett's highly theatrical rendering of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol directed by Paul Mullins and our next Classics for Kids! installment with Merry, Merry Mischief. Thank you once again for joining us today at YOUR Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey! We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE:
My first introduction to Shakespeare was in middle school, and it was… well, frankly, it was dreadful. My classmates and I were dragged through an excruciatingly dull reading of Romeo & Juliet by an unenthused teacher who made it very clear that he disliked the experience as much as we did. “Why would anyone read this stuff?” I thought. The following year was a different story altogether. I had a teacher whose infectious enthusiasm shone a whole new light on Shakespeare and his plays. She had us on our feet enacting passages from the story. I’m certain we weren’t terribly good, but we couldn’t help but be engaged as we bowed to the king, booed the tyrant, competed in mighty sword (pencil) fights, and cackled as mysterious fortunes were conveyed to unsuspecting heroes. Shakespeare was no longer a dusty, old tome that we were forced to read simply because our parents had been forced to read them. Rather, she presented them as living, breathing works crafted by a master storyteller who created entire worlds with just his words. We loved it – well, I did at least. The play that ignited a life-long passion for the Bard all those years ago? Without a doubt, it was Macbeth!
Since then, the play and I have crossed paths many times, and I’ve directed over a dozen versions of it with actors ranging from middle-schoolers to professionals and with casts as small as 4 and as large as 70. Regardless of the company, Shakespeare’s rich language, dynamic narrative, and provocative characters continue to offer compelling inroads to explore our shared human condition, and I am always excited to see what new insights it offers.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT:
In 1603, Queen Elizabeth I died, ending her nearly 45-year reign over England. Having no children, there was great concern about who would take the throne, especially considering the turmoil and civil unrest that proceeded Elizabeth’s ascent. The throne, however, passed with relatively minimal upset to her nearest surviving relative, James VI of Scotland, later James I of Great Britain and Ireland. Macbeth was certainly a play written with the tastes of the new monarch in mind. Not only does the story center around a medieval Scottish king, but it is also saturated with the supernatural, a subject that was of particular interest to James I. In 1597 the king wrote a book called Demonology, in which he called for the most severe measures to be taken in the treatment of individuals accused of witchcraft. It was a topic of great public interest, as remnants of pre-Christian society could still be found in rituals and beliefs throughout Europe, especially among the rural peasantry.

SOURCE MATERIAL & ARTISTIC LICENSE:
(Warning: Spoilers ahead) As with many of his plays, Shakespeare turned to Holinshed’s Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland for inspiration, pulling from two key stories — “King Duncan and King Macbeth” and “King Duffe.” The first story contains much of the narrative we know, including the encounter with “thrée women in strange and wild apparell,” the murder of Duncan, Malcolm’s testing of Macduff, and Macbeth’s ultimate demise. Shakespeare, however, made a few significant changes. In Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth and his wife’s short, bloody reign begins after they murder King Duncan. In Holinshed’s tale, however, Macbeth works with Banquo to assassinate Duncan, and then successfully reigns for a decade as a much beloved king before turning against his friend and the other nobles. Why these changes? King James I claimed to have a famous ancestor named Banquo, so it would have been ill-advised for Shakespeare to include him in a regicide plot. Rather, the playwright (through the witches) suggests that Banquo’s ancestors (including James himself) would be part of an unending line of kings. To replace Macbeth’s co-conspirator, Shakespeare created one of his most iconic characters, Lady Macbeth, which was composited from two women that appear elsewhere in Holinshed’s tales.
“MURDER
AND TREASON!”

Around the time Shakespeare began writing Macbeth, England was rocked by the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot, a plan orchestrated by a group of extreme Catholics intent on ridding England of its Protestant king and his sympathizers. They planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament on the opening day of the legislative session in November 1605. Had the group succeeded, it would have been a political catastrophe for England and would have almost certainly led to the collapse of the nation. The explosion would have not only killed the King and his heirs but also practically every government official. In our time, this would be equivalent to the simultaneous deaths of the President, the entire cabinet, every member of Congress, and the Supreme Court.
The plan was thwarted, however, when Guy Fawkes, the man appointed to ignite the explosives, was caught on the eve of the parliamentary session waiting beneath the House of Lords with a lantern in his hand and several slow-burning matches in his pocket. After Fawkes’ arrest, the other conspirators were eventually captured, charged with treason, convicted and hanged. Less than a year later, when watching Macbeth, audiences in Shakespeare’s day would have no doubt keenly understood the national turmoil that would ensue following a king’s murder. Guy Fawkes Day is still celebrated in Britain every November 5th as a commemoration of the day in 1605 when his plan was foiled and the English government and royal family were saved.
The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s mission is two-fold: to bring new, relevant life to the world’s classics for a diverse audience; and to use those masterworks to provide transformative experiences on stage and in classrooms. As a teaching theatre, the company is dedicated to using the classics as interdisciplinary teaching tools for artist training and arts education.
About The Shakespeare Theatre
The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is one of the oldest and most prestigious classical theatres in the nation, serving over 40,000 children and adults annually. The longest-running Shakespeare theatre on the East Coast, the company marks its 62nd season in 2024.
The company was founded in Cape May in 1963 by Paul Barry and Philip Dorian. After weathering many challenges in its first decade, the company was invited to be the professional theatre in residence at Drew Univerity by President Robert Fisher Oxnam. Bonnie J. Monte was named Artistic Director in 1990, and during her 33-year tenure, the Theatre experienced unprecedented growth and became one of America's leading training grounds for emerging classic theatre artists.
For over six decades, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey has worked tirelessly to preserve dramatic masterworks, contribute to the vitality of our community, and serve the unique needs of artists, students, and members of the general public. We advocate for the public value of the arts in everything we do and endeavor to relay the message that the classics are relevant and meaningful for everyone. As we continue to celebrate our artistic distinction and the massive impact we have had in the education arena, we are mindful of the responsibilities that come with our longevity and status in the community, and we continue to strive for excellence in all of our programming.
Each year we present five productions on our Main Stage, the F. M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre, located on the bucolic campus of Drew University in Madison, and each summer we offer an additional production at our Outdoor Stage, the Greek Theatre at Saint Elizabeth University in neighboring Florham Park. The company is also a preeminent provider of theatre education programs in New Jersey, offering numerous distinct opportunities that serve students, teachers, emerging artists, and members of the general public; all promote literacy, community, collaboration, creativity, and cultural advancement.

THE SHAKESPEARE THEATRE OF NEW JERSEY ANNUAL FUND
Ticket sales generate only a portion of the funds necessary to produce The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s artistic and educational work. The Theatre must raise the remaining funds through annual gifts from donors who recognize the impact that The Shakespeare Theatre has on the quality of life in New Jersey. We extend our deepest gratitude to the following individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies, whose gifts make it possible for The Shakespeare Theatre to present the finest in classic theatre and allow us to work with thousands of young people with our outreach education programs throughout New Jersey, the tri-state region, and the nation. Any errors or omissions are unintentional.
For more information on how you can make a contribution to support the ongoing activities of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, please contact the Development Department at 973-845-6729.
The list below reflects gifts in support of the Theatre’s general operating needs between January 1, 2023 and September 24, 2024.

ACT II: THE LEGACY PROJECT
The Legacy Project is the Theatre’s campaign to fully acquire and finish much-needed renovations at The Thomas H. Kean Theatre Factory, our support and education facility in Florham Park. In 2017, we engaged in the major public launch of this campaign to achieve our goal of $5.3 million. To date, over $4.2 million has been raised. We offer up our profound thanks to all those who have provided leadership support in the private phase of the campaign. For more information on exciting naming opportunities, or obtaining a personal tour, contact our Development office at 973-845-6729.
The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey wishes to acknowledge the following donors of Capital Campaign gifts received between January 1, 2009 and September 24, 2024.

IN-KIND CONTRIBUTIONS
Harold & Seema Tepper
Robert Worshinski & Michael Burns
Ms. Sue Zwick
Each year, numerous individuals and businesses support the Theatre by making in-kind gifts — donations of goods and/or services. Donated clothing, furniture, artwork, and other items may appear on our stages, in artist housing, in our silent auctions, or at our costume and prop sales; donated services and office items help keep the Theatre running smoothly. The following list represents in-kind donations to The Shakespeare Theatre made between January 1, 2023 and September 24, 2024.
