Welcome to the 2024 season! In this first year as Artistic Director, I have some clear goals in mind: celebrate and uphold the incredible legacy of excellence that Bonnie built during her 34-year tenure; welcome a new generation into our theatre — especially those who may have mistakenly thought that this was not a place for them; and see patrons of all ages find joy, magic, and connection at The Shakespeare Theatre.

From our five-play Main Stage season to Shakespeare under the stars, from Shakespeare masterworks to a Tony Award-winning musical, from beloved classics to new programming for kids, there is something for everyone ages 5 to 105 this year. The Shakespeare Theatre is so much more than just Shakespeare, and we are eager for new and returning audiences to experience the full range of our dynamic programs.

If you love Shakespeare, we have plenty to offer you this season — epic tragedy on the Main Stage and joyous comedy under the stars; the return of the Lend Us Your Ears play reading series; as well as our Short Shakespeare family programming in the spring.

If Shakespeare’s not your thing, we have plenty to offer you as well: musical comedy, romance, hijinks, and redemption abound this season. And if you’re feeling adventurous or curious, perhaps it’s time you give Shakespeare another try. I believe you’ll find our vibrant productions far from the dusty tomes that many of us experienced as kids. And speaking of kids, we are thrilled to expand our Classics for Kids! program, celebrating children’s literature and live theatre.

If you’ve been a longtime patron, you’ll continue to see the exceptional productions you’ve come to expect here. If you’ve never been to our theatre before or haven’t been in a while, I invite you to take a closer look at the wonderful offerings we have in store for you: New York-caliber theatre without the bridge or tunnel and without the New York-level prices.

Whether you are a proud Bard-ophile or feel a little Shakes-fear, there is something for you here! I hope you will join us for this exciting new season at YOUR Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. I know you’ll be glad you came.

Dear Friends,

A KNOCK-’EM DEAD, UPROARIOUS MUSICAL COMEDY

A Gentleman’s Guide to LOVE & MURDER

2014 Tony Award Winner for Best Musical

A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER

Book & Lyrics by Robert L. Freedman Music & Lyrics by Steven Lutvak

Based on A Novel by Roy Horniman

Directed by Brian B. Crowe A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER IS SPONSORED BY THE S. DILLARD AND ADRIENNE KIRBY FAMILY PHILANTHROPIC FUND (CFNJ)

When low-born Monty Navarro discovers he is eighth in line of the wealthy D’ysquith family, he begins down a hysterically ghoulish path on his way to the earldom. Will his cunning plot be uncovered, or will he be named the ninth Earl of Highhurst? And what about the two charming young women who have the would-be earl in their sights? Who will win his heart? With many twists along the way, the outcome is delightfully uncertain until the curtain falls.

Based on the 1907 novel The Autobiography of a Criminal and Sir Alec Guinness’ 1949 comic film Kind Hearts and Coronets, Gentleman’s Guide is filled with unforgettable music and non-stop laughs…not to mention a tour-deforce performance as one actor plays all eight members of the ill-fated D’Ysquith family.

“Though privately it was said, they should all drop dead, No one thought they ever really would!”

A LOVE LETTER TO THE BARD

The Book of W ill

An Impossible Mission to Preserve a Legacy

THE BOOK OF WILL

Directed by Bonnie J. Monte

THE BOOK OF WILL IS SPONSORED IN PART BY LYNNE AND JOHN RATHGEBER

Without Shakespeare there would be no “to be or not to be”, but without a pair of Shakespeare’s loyal friends, half of his plays would have been lost to us forever. Lauren Gunderson’s love letter to the Bard blends history, hijinks, and some of Shakespeare’s most famous passages in a celebration of theatre and friendship.

After Shakespeare’s death, two actors from his company embark on a seemingly impossible mission to preserve his legacy and the poetry that shaped their lives. Four centuries later, their triumphant efforts continue to influence our world.

“This is our heart on those pages.”

THE GENIUS OF JANE AUSTEN RETURNS Will Love Win Out in the End?

Jane Austen’s

Sense and Sensibility

JANE AUSTEN’S SENSE AND SENSIBILITY

Adapted by Jessica Swale

Directed by Nisi Sturgis

SENSE & SENSIBILITY IS SPONSORED IN PART BY DR. W. JOHN BAUER AND NANCY B. BOUCHER

Long before Bridgerton sparked desires and ignited our screens, a young new writer was setting the hearts of England ablaze with the deep longing of her captivating characters.

When their father’s death leaves them penniless and socially vulnerable, sisters Elinor and Marianne must navigate the snares of society and determine where their values truly lie. How can they listen to their hearts when money dictates marriages? Will pragmatism or romance win out in the end? Austen’s celebrated first novel captures the twisting relationships and delicate emotions of the Dashwood sisters with humor and style.

“How can I remain calm when my heart is exploding?”

A BOLD TAKE ON THE HOLIDAY CLASSIC

Charles Dickens’

A Christmas Carol

Capture the Magic of the Season

CHARLES DICKENS’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Directed by Paul Mullins

A CHRISTMAS CAROL IS SPONSORED IN PART BY

Scrooge’s iconic journey from miser to humanitarian appears fresh and new in Neil Bartlett’s bold and highly-theatrical adaptation. Using a small ensemble of actors to bring the vast inhabitants of Dickens’ world to life (animate and inanimate alike) — everything from the merry Fezziwigs to Scrooge’s complaining lightbulb — this inventive production is sure to capture the imaginations of the entire family and fill audiences with the magical spirit of the season.

“It is required of every man that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellow men, and travel far and wide; and if that spirit goes not forth in life, it is condemned to do so after death.”
