freshmen!
It is with great Joy, Hope, and Faith that I wish you all the best in your learning journey here at SFHS this year. Let’s continue to show Compassion, Acceptance and Serve one another with Integrity. “Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends.”
vicemr.gilmoreprincipal Welcome back to a new school year, and a particularly warm welcome to our 55 new students and 140 The High School is larger than it has been in a long time, and we are delighted to have you all. The start of a new year is always full of hope and good resolutions, but this one perhaps more than ever. De spite torrential rain on what should have been Day 1, we are particularly hopeful for this year. The pandemic is still with us, and there are still restrictions, but there is a calmer and less uncertain feel to the beginning of this year as we all start school in person. In the last few years, it has been more difficult to think about the future, as we could barely plan a holiday trip, let alone think about our plans for the years to come. Now, it seems we can finally resume a more normal life and start planning again. High School students, this is my challenge to you at the start of this year: take a moment to think ahead and plan, now that we can. What opportunities will you take advantage of this year? In what ways will you become a better student? What will you do to get a better balance between school, sleep, physical activity and general wellbeing? What new people will you talk to? What problems will you solve? What kind of person will you become, and what steps will you take towards being that person this year?

HI GUYS, My name is Ethan Cho and I’ll be serving as the Lifestyle page editor this year! Writing is one of my biggest passions since the moment I could write, so being part of a school newspaper has been my dream even before I knew what The Spirit was. Once I joined The Spirit, though, I realized that it’s far more than just crafting articles. It’s the people you meet, the knowledge you learn, the stories you experience. The count less hours I’ve poured into planning interviews and writing articles weren’t for nothing. Instead, they opened my eyes to a unique perspective of the SFHS community, something I wouldn’t have acquired without The Spirit.
At times, there’s so much (too much) to life as a teen and a high school student. Balancing school and social life, fig uring out what you want to pursue, it’s an endless line of questions that feels like they only grow throughout your four years of high school. The Lifestyle page is the one stop shop for all of this and more: at the end of the day, who better to write about teens than teens themselves?

risks to explore who you are. What are your passions? What kind of person do you want to be? Take that course, try exploring an unfamiliar topic, or even talk to that scary upperclass man! You can’t unlock your full potential with out challenging yourself and stepping out of your comfort zone.
JOIN CLUBS
Our high school has countless clubs—so many it may seem overwhelming! There’s no doubt that there’s something for everyone, whether sports, service, academics or even card games. Flip to page 8 for an overview of this year’s HS clubs. The possibilities are endless, so it’s important that you take advantage of these opportunities. In freshman year, join many clubs that interest you. It’s important that you experi ment with your interests early in high school so that you can recognize which clubs to ded icate your time to for the next three years. But with great freedom and power also come great responsibility: under stand your limits, and find a comfortable number of clubs for yourself.
High school isn’t all about work and studying: it’s also about having fun! Exploring a hob by is one of the best stress relievers. Drawing, playing games, collecting figures—find anything that makes you calm and This should also be something not reserved for school, nor for college: solely for you. Quizlet is an amazing resource to review material. It has countless public sets and features to create your own flashcard sets. It’s im portant to synthesize your notes into a format suitable for review, and in a way you can understand, which is why Quizlet is so useful. Flashcards also make you employ active recall—making your brain work while reviewing—which is far more effective than passively read ing and memorizing written notes.
HEALTHYFORM Notion is an extremely versatile resource, used for pretty much anything. Many students use the multi-platform app to plan events, save documents, and organize projects. But one of the biggest selling points of Notion is its cus tomization capability. You can or ganize documents and planners in any way you like, by adding tables, text, and even images! All of these make studying far more tolerable, as you can work in an environment
to know exactly when to function in a certain way. A healthy habit could be sleeping at a reason able time every night, giving your body and brain enough time to recover. Other habits include eat ing breakfast, studying at a certain time, and drink ing water. You’ll know you’ve formed a habit once you’ve realized it’s become an unnoticeable, yet necessary part of your life.
As a freshie reading this survival guide you may feel over whelmed. But understand that high school isn’t all about studying and preparing for the future. It’s also a very fun place where you’re supplied with freedom and many opportuni ties. Although at times high school will be stressful, you can still make it the best four years of your life.
tipsThe above apply to many, but there’s no guarantee they work for you. It’s important to try many methods to man age your high school life and to find the one that works best for you. Find ways on the internet. Ask upperclassmen about what they did. It’s important to discover methods that work for you early on, so you can utilize those techniques throughout your high school journey.
In high school, Google Calendar is your best friend. It’s a crucial component of effective time man agement and a must-need for all of us, as we juggle schoolwork and extracurriculars. Through Google Calendar, you can note important dates like deadlines and events and set up meetings with teachers and counselors. Also, make sure to con nect your calendar to official SFS calendars like the 12-Day Schedule,

In early July, Boris Johnson announced that he would resign as the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, a position he held for three years. Scandals plagued his tenure, but none as damag ing as his breaking COVID restrictions with late-night parties and excessive drinking at his office and residence in central London (CNN). Nearly sixty of Johnson’s ministers, members of his government, had resigned before his own announcement, citing concerns over leadership decisions of the Prime Minister.
After almost six months of street protests against the island na tion’s soaring inflation, lengthy power cuts, and food scarcity, a group of Sri Lankan protestors stormed the presidential com pound and overtook the president’s residence, forcing the pres ident and his family to flee the palace. Days later, President Gota baya Rajapaksa and his wife left Sri Lanka by military transport. Rajapaksa submitted his resignation from Singapore in an email. The devolving situation in Sri Lanka is becoming increasingly des perate, in part because the Rajapaksa family dominates Sri Lankan politics (NYT). Mismanagement of the country’s resources and the national budget has left its Treasury coffers empty and forced Sri Lanka to default on its debt for the first time in history, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, an ally of the former leaders who is deeply unpopular with the public, has taken on presidential responsibilities. He promises to overhaul the government but faces seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Johnson, who was reluctant to release his grip on power, will re main the “caretaker” leader until the Conservative party chooses his replacement (CNN). Johnson’s ultimate fall from favor proves that —even for politicians—the rules of gravity still apply.

Ukraine was the world’s fifth largest exporter of wheat until exports halted as a result of the Russian invasion. With ports blockaded, the country has relied on trans port by land, through trucks and trains, to keep up its exports (NYT). On June 24, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 6-3 to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark decision to grant the constitutional right to an abor tion. The decision prompted anti-abortion activists to celebrate across the country, while abortion advocates took to the streets in protest. However, not all abortions in the U.S. are prohibited. In fact, as of late July, 21 states still allow for procedural abortions, while other states permit abortions only under certain conditions, such as when the life of the mother is endangered. However, abortions are banned without exception for rape, incest, or gestational age in 8 states. Lack of abor tion access will put some women—especially women from racial and so cio-economic minorities—at a greater health and economic risk (NYT).

Abe, however, was no stranger to criticism. He has been negatively compared to other nationalist leaders who are often described as dictators, like Viktor Orban of Hungary and Vladimir Putin of Russia, as he set his sights on making Japan more milita ristic, discontinuing its peaceful postWWII reputation. However, this com parison doesn’t give Abe the credit he deserves: though he had militaristic ambitions, he resisted any urges he may have had to assume greater pow er like Xi Jinping or Putin. Instead Abe strengthened democratic ties with global democracies (NYT). Abe’s tenure as prime minister faced challenges as regional relations faltered under his government. Abe’s death by gunshot wound shocked a country known for its tight gun restrictions and low crime rate.
Although Abenomics was not fully successful in every as pect, the Japanese economic market did rebound as em ployment soared and stock prices skyrocketed (BBC). Abe is also recognized as an important statesman. It’s August—welcome back! The start of a new academic year means we can participate in our beloved extracurriculars once again. Wheth er they be sports practices, musical rehearsals, or in-school group meet ings, club activities serve as a very important mechanism for academic and social stress relief. But get ready for some big-time changes! In addition to our re vamped class schedules, the clubs schedule will look very different this year. To ease any confusions that may arise, I’ve interviewed Yeonjae Choi, the co-director of SFHS’s Clubs Council, who laid out the transition for us. Alright, let’s start with the logis tics. “With members coming together more frequently, I think this will improve the engagement within clubs as well as allow clubs to make more progress over the school year.”
For all clubs that take place during school hours, you’ll meet once every six days instead of once every eight days. Well, you may be wondering, why not keep last year’s clubs schedule? As Yeonjae explains, club meeting times had to be modified in accordance with the school-wide 6-day cycle that was newly established for the 22-23 academic Becauseyear. 2 out of 6 days is much less than the 5 out of 8 days allocated to clubs last year, periods 4 and 5 were also made available for club meetings in addition to period 6.
