Unusual Wildlife - The Quokka



The quokka is a type of marsupial who live in Australia. Included in the marsupial family are kangaroos and wallabies. They live in swamps and scrublands and tunnel through shrubs to create shelters and hideouts. They are the only land mammal on Rottnest Island.

Covered in short, coarse brown-grey fur, they typically grow to 54cm in length.

They have small rounded ears and a black nose. They are herbivores who mainly eat at night and so are nocturnal. Their diet mainly consists of leaves, stems, bark and grass. They store fat in their tails which means that in moments of starvation caused by a lack of food or water, they are able to break down the fat stores in their tails in order to aid survival. They are also able to get a lot of their required water intake from the plants that they eat.

When feeding on plants, they begin by swallowing the food but not chewing it. At





a later time, they will regurgitate the food as cud and then chew it. This is deemed as a more efficient way of getting all of the nutrients out of the ingested food.

In the Rottnest Island, quokkas have become a bit of a tourist attraction. With their sweet fuzzy faces making them look like they are constantly smiling, they can appear as very friendly creatures.

You may have seen several ‘selfie’ style photos going around the internet of these creatures! However, you may not want to get too close to these animals. Whilst usually peaceful creature, their feet are equipped with very sharp claws in order for protection. If they feel very threatened, they have been known to sink their teeth in to their feared attacker and dangle from them, whilst scratching and clawing at their victim. It is reported by a doctor’s surgery on the Rottnest Island that every year they are to treat dozens of patients for quokka bites. Usually they do live in peace and they aren’t known for fighting with one another; not even over females, food or water.

Quokkas are intelligent creatures and have adapted well to human presence in their environment. There are reported to be several quokka settlements around campsites and they are notorious for raiding local homes in the search for food.

Some local businesses have even reported quokkas entering their restaurants in the search for food!

Technically quokkas can breed all year round but many tend to breed between the months of January and August when it is a bit cooler. Although they can breed at any point during the year, females can only give birth twice a year.

Pregnancy lasts for a month and the female will then give birth to 1 infant, called a joey. The joey lives in its mother’s pouch for 6 months and survives off of its mother’s milk. Once it leaves its mother’s pouch, it relies on its mother’s milk for an additional 2 months. At around 1.5

years of age, quokkas become sexually mature and are able to have young of their own. In the wild, quokkas have been found to have a life span of 10 years.

Most animals have a strong maternal instinct to protect their young. However, when a mother is threatened in the quokka community, she will pull the joey out of her pouch and throw them on to the ground. The joey will squeal which attracts the predator and the mother will be given time to get away.

There are lots of threats to quokkas which sadly gives their species a conservation status of vulnerable. Human development and logging leads to a loss of habit for these creatures, and they are also preyed upon by foxes, dogs and cats. Quokkas are also at risk of developing muscular dystrophy; a disease in which muscles become damaged and weakened.

Goodness me, time really flies doesn’t it? With the summer just around the corner, it means that it is time for the Sevenoaks Summer Festival! As always, the organisers have got a fantastic line up and you can get a quick overview of events from their advert below.

(Further details can be found on their website www.sevenoaksfestival.org.uk).With 2 young children, our household’s favourites are the puppet shows by Wishworks. Belly laughs were had by them both when they went to see Goldifox and his attempts to ‘help’ the story tellers. If you have young children in the house or perhaps grandchildren, I really recommend it. Not only have we got the wonderful Sevenoaks Summer Festival approaching but also the village summer fetes. I grew up in Otford and every year we would walk down to the village fete; my all time favourite was the Punch and Judy show. There are lots of wonderful events happening throughout Sevenoaks this month; take a look at our events listing on pages 4 and 5.

Our wildlife section is back and this time we explore the cute quokka. They look like a little smiling teddy bear, don’t they? This month, Riverford treats us to a wonderful looking recipe for potato and garlic soup. Apparently you can find wild garlic growing in woodland I will keep my eyes out in our local woods over the next few weeks.

We have our 2nd instalment from a local history book, ‘Tales from a Kent Village - Hildenborough’, on page 7. This time we look at the coronation celebrations of George V and Queen Mary in 1911. Heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion and fry on a low heat for 10 minutes, stirring often, until softened without colouring. Add the potatoes and stock. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Add the wild garlic leaves, reserving a few shreds for garnishing the soup. Blend until smooth. Reheat in the pan, seasoning to taste.

Serve with a swirl of crème fraîche or double cream, a few shreds of wild garlic and some wild garlic flowers if you have them.

The Coronation Celebration of George V and Queen Mary, June 1911 As with previous celebrations, the entire village was decorated. There was a ceremonial arch to the entrance of the cricket ground where the celebrations were to take place. Near the ‘Half Moon Inn’ there was a fine floral arch topped off by “a patriotic device and a blaze of fairy lights”.

Mr R Brown and his team were responsible for a spectacular arch but misfortune befell them: “For two days, he and his men laboured in the erection of an elaborate archway opposite the Church. They left the finishing touches for the Coronation morning, in blissful ignorance of the fact that the Post Office motor coach was preparing a specially lofty load for its journey to Hastings … unfortunately it got mixed with Mr Brown’s skilfully arranged wires, and chaos was the result. The builder was the recipient of general sympathy in thus having his labour rendered in vain.”

The account of the celebrations, beautifully written up in the Minute book, is based on a report that appeared in the “Free Press” on 30th June 1911. The decorations are described in some detail… “… Venetian masks, surmounted by huge flags lined the temporary carriage way to the cricket ground and surrounded the pretty sports course. The pavilion front bore a crown and the Royal initials outlined in fairy lamps, and the bandstand was most skilfully draped and enclosed with Japanese lanterns and artificial flowers.”

The houses and shops were all decorated and there were arches over the entrances to Foxbush, Mountains and Oak Hill whilst “Pembroke Lodge was a study in white and gold”.

The Celebrations were spread over two days. They began at the School on the Wednesday afternoon. The proceedings started with … “… A modified form of the ceremony of ‘trooping the colours’… and some of Elgar’s famous Coronation part songs were tastefully rendered by the scholars.”

The Council Chairman, Mr G W Johnson, and the Vicar, the Rev’d James Stone, delivered short addresses. Mr Johnson then distributed commemorative mugs, paid for by the Parish, to the children.

As a personal gift from him, Mr Johnson presented “beakers” to the heads of households where there were no school children.

Next day the celebrations began “with a merry peel on the Church bells at half past five.” There was a service of Holy Communion at 8am and at 1.30pm “an enormous congregation assembled for a thanksgiving service” – "The service was a delightful one. The choir gave an exquisite rendering of the anthem ‘The King shall rejoice’ while the conclusion of the service was marked by an impressive singing of the ‘Te Deum’.”

Following the service a procession was formed “and a way was made to the cricket ground to the stirring strains of the Band of the 4th Royal West Kent Regiment under Bandmaster Bartram.”

The Sports’ events followed. There were the usual running races, some just for members of the Boys’ Brigade, plus traditional events such as the tug-of-war, the egg and spoon race, the sack race and the thread and needle race. There was “throwing the cricket ball”, a “Band Race” and a skipping race. There were some close finishes… "… notably in the race for boys under 12 where, after a dead heat, R Johnson defeated G Clements by what, at Epsom would be called a short nose. The ladies’ tug-of-war produced a most desperate struggle and afterwards the most lively arguments. It was generally agreed, however, that the ladies with the most dainty figures were also the best pullers.”

The prizes “were handsome ones, and were subscribed for by the leading residents of the parish”.

Unfortunately, drizzling rain rather spoiled the events on the sports field but the

tea that followed was served, as at previous celebrations, in huge tents. As before, Mr Austin of Tonbridge was responsible for the catering.

“Hildenborough” declared the report on the celebrations …” when it entertains its parishioners does not restrict its hospitality to the young or to the old or to the poor.

Rich and poor, young and old, all sit down together. So it was on this occasion, and the delightful mixing of the company at the festive board was quite one of the charms of the day.”

The report continued …

“Every table was a top table and every guest was ‘above the salt’. In all 1,182 persons partook of the substantial meat tea provided … There was no speech making at the meal – another unusual charm – but after the distribution of the prizes by the Dowager Marchioness of Downshire, Mr G W Johnson made a short, but most impressive patriotic address.”

The Dowager lived at Nizels – now a golf club.

The rain interfered with the dancing that followed the tea. The music was provided by the Regimental Band … “… who nobly stuck to the band stand while the rain ran in streams over their folios. And still the dancers danced merrily on, and they expressed disappointment when the programme was cut short by a shower heavier than usual.”

The celebrations ended with a torch and lantern-light procession from the cricket ground to the Church … “… the long lines of waving lights produced a very fine effect. In fact, this was one of the most popular features of the day.

Arrived at the Church, the band struck up the National Anthem in which the whole assembly joined. Then followed ‘Auld Lang Syne’ and – home.”

The weather had “left much to be desired” throughout the day but despite this, the celebrations had been greatly enjoyed by all.
