Population numbers are thought to have dropped by up to 80% over the past 30 years. The rampant clearing of the region’s rain forests for timber, settlement and palm oil plantations has depleted high areas of their habitat. Very few are found in captivity as they simply do not respond well to the artificial conditions.

to make the call echo so that it is louder. Males weigh up to 50 pounds, whilst females only weigh around 20 pounds.

Interestingly, these monkeys are excellent swimmers and are known to travel across very deep areas of water to find food or to escape approaching danger. They have evolved webbed feet and hands to help them in the water, aiding their escape from predators such as crocodiles.

These are the largest mammals found inhabiting the higher levels of the canopy in the rainforest. It is because these monkeys are leaf eaters that they have such a large, swollen stomach. It is made up of chambers containing a special cellulose digesting bacteria that helps break down the leaves. The trouble with this is that it is a very slow process, meaning that the stomach is often full and can contain up to a quarter of the individual’s total body weight.

These monkeys are incredibly sociable and live in groups of between 2 – 30 individuals, with one dominant male and up to 10 females and their young. The females tend to lead the searches for food and care for the young, whilst the male defends his troop by making loud honking sounds and showing his teeth.

Females give birth to a single infant after a gestation period of around 5 and a half months. The infant is born with dark coloured fur and a blue face, which does not pinked until the infant is 3 or 4 months old. The young are cared for by their mother and any other females that are in the troop. They remain with their mother until around 1 year of age, when the young females tend to stay with their troop and the young males leave to join a group of bachelor males. Proboscis monkeys are able to reproduce from around 4 years old.

The proboscis monkey is a medium-sized arboreal primate that is found exclusively in the rainforests of Borneo. Being an arboreal primate means that they mainly reside in the trees. These monkeys are easily distinguishable from other primates due to their long, fleshy noses and large, swollen stomachs. Although having slightly larger noses and stomachs are defining of the Colobine (Leaf) Monkey family, these features on the Proboscis monkey are more than double the size of their closest relatives (with the nose being up to 7 inches long).

Adults are mainly pale orange to light brown in colour, with a richer coloured head and shoulders, and grey limbs and tail with a light pink face. The protruding nose develops with age, with infants having a much more monkey typical nose, and older males having a larger and more bulbous one. Scientists are still unsure as to exactly why the nose of these monkeys gets so big, but it is widely believed that it is due to sexual attraction with mates, where the larger nose is seen as more attractive. In comparison to the males, the adult females have much smaller noses. For some males, the nose is so big that it hangs down over their mouth and has to be pushed aside in order to be able to eat. However, when calling, the nose straightens up and is thought

Well, well, well. July is here already! For our household, this means that the school summer holidays are about to start. As working parents, this introduces a new kind of juggling to our weekly schedule. It is the first school summer holiday for us to experience and unfortunately our son is too old to return to our childcare providers from last year so we have to now enter the world of summer holiday clubs. There are so many to choose from and I have to be honest that I have been surprised as to how many activities they can fit in to one day. As soon as he heard that he could do go karting and water fights in the same day, he was sold! So whilst I’m typing away at my desk and designing artwork, peeking tentatively out of my office window to see the sun, my son is going to be having a blast out in the sunshine with new friends. How fantastic is that? I think he is certainly going to have a summer to remember! It certainly helps to soften that working parent guilt, that’s for sure!

We are currently renovating an old house. Structurally the house is all ok thankfully, but internally it is very very dated. It is very rewarding being able to put our own mark on to a house and to see it transform. But it was interesting to be on the other side of the fence, where I needed to find local companies to help us achieve our renovation dream and it brought it home to me again as to just how valuable magazines like these are for finding local companies. It can be quite daunting beginning the search to find a local company, so to be able to have a magazine come through your door every month with all different services being advertised is so helpful. Recipe - Kohlrabi and Peanut Stir-Fry

ALL KENT

Serves 3 - 4 Kohlrabi takes on spicy flavourings well, so is a good veg to use in Asian cooking.

• 250g egg noodles • 2 tbsp sesame oil • 2 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 large or 2 small carrots, peeled and cut into think matchsticks • 1 large kohlrabi, peeled, cut into thin slices, then into matchsticks • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 3-4 cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated • 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped (leave the seeds in for more heat)

• 1 bunch of spring onions, finely sliced • 150g sugar snap peas, or use chopped green beans or a mix of both • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 1 generous tbsp crunchy peanut butter • 3 tbsp unsalted peanuts, toasted and chopped • squeeze of lime juice, to taste • handful of coriander leaves, roughly chopped (optional)

Cook the noodles according to the packet instructions, then toss with the sesame oil to prevent them from sticking together. Heat the sunflower oil in a wok, add the carrot, kohlrabi, garlic, ginger and chilli, if using, and stir-fry on a high heat for 3 minutes. Add the noodles with the spring onions and the sugar snap peas or green beans and cook for a further 2 minutes. Stir in the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, peanut butter, chopped peanuts and 2 tablespoons of water (add a little more water for more of a sauce) and heat through. Serve with a little lime juice squeezed over and sprinkled with the chopped coriander, if using.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests.
