Jungle Wildlife - The Giant Tortoise Somewhat unsurprisingly, given the name, the giant tortoise is the largest living species of tortoise. These tortoises are also known as Galápagos tortoises because they are native to the Galápagos Islands. They are the 10th heaviest living reptile, reaching weights of over 400kg (880lb) and lengths of over 1.8 meters (5.9ft). In the wild, they have been known to live to just over 100 years old; with a captive tortoise having lived to reach the age of 170 years old.

These slow moving reptiles graze on grass, leaves, fruits, vines, cactuses and other vegetation. Due to their rather inefficient digestive system, they spend most of the day eating large quantities of vegetation; as so much of their food passes through their body without being digested.

Like all reptiles, they are cold blooded; meaning that their internal temperature matches the external environment around them. The sun, therefore, stops them from freezing and they are often seen outside, basking in the sunlight.

Galápagos tortoises sleep for 16 hours a day; in a depression on the ground they have made in order to conserve heat.

Due to their slow metabolism and large internal stores of water, these tortoises can survive up to a year without eating or drinking anything. Their bodies break down stores of body fat to produce water.

Although beneficial to the tortoise, this rare trait became disadvantageous to their survival.

In the 1600’s, buccaneers started to use the Galápagos islands as a base to restock levels of food and water, and make repairs to their boats. Because they could survive for so long, the giant tortoises were taken aboard the ships as they provided fresh meat with minimal, or no, level of care required. In the 1800’s (until early this century), whaling

ships and fur-sealers began to collect these tortoises for their fine oil. Early settlers to the islands then hunted them for their meat and began to destroy their habitat to make way for their agriculture.

It was at this point that domestic animals were also introduced to the islands, many of which became wild and began to prey on these tortoises.

Dogs, cats, rats, and pigs eat tortoise eggs and young tortoises. These human effects certainly had disastrous effects on the levels of tortoises and it has been estimated that over 100,000 were hunted over the centuries. Unsurprisingly, the species is now classified as ‘vulnerable’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Giant tortoises reach sexual maturation at the age of about 40 and their breeding season is usually at the end of the hot season. Mating lasts for several hours, with the male tortoise mounting the female tortoise. The shell of the male is grown to accommodate this behaviour as the underneath is concave. The female then travels several miles to dig her nest and lay her eggs. Between 2 and 16 eggs, the size of tennis balls, are laid by the female. The female then makes a muddy plug for the nest hole out of soil and urine. The eggs are then left to incubate in the heat of the sun, where they will hatch around 130 days later. Neither the male or female provides any level of infant care, and so these tortoises are on their own from the start.

Shell size and shape differs between populations of these tortoises. On islands with humid highlands, there are larger tortoises with domed shells and short necks; whereas on islands with dry lowlands, the tortoises are smaller, with saddleback shells and long necks. This is because there is plenty of food to support

the larger size in the highlands, whereas in the dryer lowlands, food is scarcer and so a smaller body is more advantageous.

At mating time, opposing males rise up on their legs and stretch up their necks.

The male with the longer neck is deemed as being the most dominant and gets to mate with the female. These differences were observed by Charles Darwin and contributed to the development of his theory of evolution.

It is thought that the present races of giant tortoises evolved in Galápagos from a common ancestor that arrived from the mainland. Only a single pregnant female, or a male and female, needed to arrive in this way to colonise Galápagos.

This common ancestor is thought to have been of normal size, evolving in to the large tortoise that we know today. This would have been because there was no longer any need for this species to hide from predators and there were no similar animals to compete with for food.

Summer officially starts at the end of this month and that can only mean one thing in Sevenoaks - it’s time for the annual Sevenoaks Summer Festival again! For anyone new to Sevenoaks, this is an annual event that is organised by volunteers and was started nearly 50 years ago by Sevenoaks School. Sevenoaks School pupils used to have a special event with music to mark the end of their exams. In 1970, they decided to open up this event to the wider community of Sevenoaks, in the hope that it would become an annual tradition in our town. And it has! As always, the organisers have put together a fantastic programme of events with something to suit everybody; from those on their own to families. You can read a highlight of these events on our community events pages on pages 4 and 5 of this issue.
