Unusual Wildlife - Wombats Wombats are small marsupials that are built for digging, with short legs, compact heads, short broad feet and strong claws.

They are covered in fur that can be dark brown or black in colour. They are as big as a medium sized dog, measuring up to 30 inches in length and weighing between 55 and 88lbs. All wombat species live in Australia and Tasmania in mountains, forests and grasslands. They live inside burrows which consist of many tunnels and sleeping chambers. Some tunnels are dug up to 650 feet in length. Although they have short legs, when running they can reach speeds of up to 25mph. Wombat’s have very thick skin on their bottom which is so thick that it can withstand bites. This is beneficial to them as they can use their backside to block the entrance to their burrows.

There are 2 types of wombat; the common wombat and the hairy-nosed wombat.

The common wombat is believed to live a solitary life whereas the hairy-nosed wombat has been known to live with up to 12 other wombats at one time. Both types of wombat are nocturnal and spend night time foraging for food or digging. During cold days, wombats have been seen coming out of their burrows to sunbathe and warm up.

Wombats are herbivores, meaning that they only eat vegetation. Their diet commonly consists of roots, grasses, scrub,

herbs and bark. Amazingly, they get most of their water from the foods that they eat and can live for years without drinking water. Although their stomachs are equipped with special enzymes, it can still take up to 14 days for a wombat to digest a meal. A plant only diet can be wearing to the teeth, and because of this, their teeth grow constantly.

A rather grim but still fascinating fact about wombats is that their poo is shaped like a cube. Like many creatures, they use their poo to mark their territory.

Wombats typically mate during times when food is abundant. If there is a drought or not much food around, wombats have been found not to mate.

The males fight for the right to mate with the females. Their mating habits include the male chasing the female in circles, with the female making coughing sounds whilst being chased. The gestation period for females is between 21-30 days. The female will give birth to one young at a time, every 2 years. The baby is called a joey and weighs only 2 grams. Right after birth, the joey climbs in to its mother’s pouch to finish developing. It will stay like this for around 5 months; feeding off of its mother whilst in the pouch. The mother’s pouch works in an opposite way to that of a kangaroo. It opens towards the bottom, rather than towards the chest. This prevents dirt and debris from entering the

pouch whilst burrowing. After 5 months, the joey will begin to climb in and out of its mother’s pouch. It will do this for another few months. They become mature between 1.5 years to 3 years of age and can live up to 15 years in the wild.

Wombats are considered to be pests in certain parts of Australia because they damage crops and protective fences.

Farmers often end up killing them to protect their land. Another threat to the survival of wombats is habitat loss.

Welcome To Issue 192

Growing up, I used to hear the term ‘wombat’ being used as another way of calling somebody stupid or describing something silly that had happened. I think it was my Mother’s way of being polite when she really wanted to use other, perhaps more appropriate, words. (Thinking back to my childhood, I did mostly hear ‘you wombat’ being said through gritted teeth to other drivers when my Mum was driving!) By my own nature, I am a bit of a geek and I love to find out why things happen and where things come from. So I thought I would explore where the slang term ‘wombat’ came from and what it means. (In truth, I also wanted to do a quick check to see if other people actually used the term before writing about it in this magazine. It turns out they do. Phew). Anyway, a quick search on the internet tells me that ‘wombat’ actually stands for ‘waste of money, brains and time.’ Fascinating stuff. You would then think that the actual creature wombat would be a bit dim but I couldn’t find any literature to suggest that this was the case. The only conclusion that I could come to is that they are very adorable creatures. They look really sweet (see our picture on page 2). I wrote the article about wombats over half-term when my 6 year old and his friend were at home with me. They agreed that wombats look very cute but the best fact that I shared with them, and probably the only thing they remember me telling them about wombats, is that their poo comes out in a cube shape. So there you go. The saying goes that we learn something new every day - I have now taught you two things to do with wombats! You’re welcome!

The community events are back in full swing this issue. It’s pretty clear to see why - just look at the weather lately. Spring is definitely around the corner; have you noticed how all of a sudden the mornings are brighter? And the evenings are lighter for longer too. Without sounding too corny, it really does put a spring in your step to see the sun shining again and hearing the birds singing and seeing the beautiful daffodils and other spring flowers begin to pop up.

Baking potatoes aren’t, as some people believe, a type of potatoe – the name refers to the size. Floury potatoes give the fluffiest insides when baked, but all varieties work for this comforting, low-effort meal.

• 4 baking potatoes (250-300g each) • olive oil • 2 good handfuls (about 50g) curly kale leaves, stripped from their stems

Heat the oven to 190°C/Gas 5. Put the potatoes in a baking dish and prick them a few times with a sharp knife. Rub the skins all over with a little olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt.

Bake for 1–1½ hours, depending on size, until the insides are tender and the outsides crisp.

Meanwhile, boil the kale for 4 minutes in salted water. Refresh in cold water, drain well, chop and set aside. When the potatoes are ready, remove them from the oven and leave until just cool enough to handle. Slice off the tops (serve them with the potatoes), and use a teaspoon to scoop out most of the insides, being careful not to break the skin. Put the flesh in a bowl and mash with the kale and three quarters of the cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon the mixture back into the skins, scatter over the remaining cheese and return to the oven for about 15 minutes, until the cheese is golden and bubbling.

Variations • Replace the kale with chard, spinach, mashed broccoli, sliced leeks, shredded cabbage or Brussels sprouts.

• Mash a dash of soured cream or crème fraîche or a scoop of cream cheese in with the filling.

• Try a goat’s cheese or a blue cheese instead of the Cheddar.

• Swap the potatoes for sweet potatoes; they don’t take as long to cook – about 40 minutes for small ones and up to an hour or more for really large ones.
