Swimming in the Cumberland Valley It’s here! Summer! After one of the harshest winters the Cumberland Valley has seen in nearly two decades, the temperatures are rising and it’s time to cool off. One of the easiest ways to beat the summer heat is jumping in the water. Luckily, the Valley has some great swimming holes, including community pools and lakes. If you’ve been on Facebook at all over the last month or two, chances are you’ve seen the Cold-Water Challenge, where individuals are tagged in a status and told to jump in cold water (lakes, streams, pools, I’ve even seen someone use their own bathtub) to give money to charity. It may have been miserable to do this in April, but your friends will be begging you to tag them come July. The ocean may be far away, but beautiful fresh water and sandy beaches aren’t. Doubling Gap Lake at Colonel Denning State Park offers fresh, cool water for swimming enjoyment as well as a beach perfect for enjoying the sun or

playing in the sand. The 3.5 acre lake also presents a scenic mountain backdrop. It is open from 8 a.m. to dusk and has food concessions Friday and Saturday. Pine Grove Furnace State Park offers two great swimming locations. Much like Doubling Gap Lake, Laurel Lake features a sandy beach and mountain backdrop. Laurel Lake spans 25 acres and is open from 8 a.m. to sunset. Fuller Lake is also located in Pine Grove Furnace State Park and has lifeguards on watch from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day. Both lakes open at the end of May and close in mid-September. Pine Grove’s other offerings include hiking, biking, and fishing. If you’re more into diving boards and slides there are some fantastic options around Cumberland Valley for you to check out. The Boiling Springs Pool located on Mountain Round offers four pools, three waterslides, and a full service snack bar. Certified by the American Red Cross swimming les-

sons are available. The Boiling Springs Pool events include Summerfest on June 21 and $5 Fridays offered six times throughout the summer. The pool opens Memorial Day weekend and begins daily operations June 10. Another great pool location is the Hampden Township Pool. The 550,000 gallon pool features a 120 foot waterslide. Other park features include a tot pool, spray ground, and concession stand. Swimming lessons, Aqua Zumba, Deep Water Aerobics, and scuba classes are offered at the pool. Several great pool events include a summer concert kick-off with the Colt Wilbur Band on June 6, fireworks on June 28, greater Harrisburg concert on June 29, and Dive-In Movie at the Pool on August 22. The Hampden Township Pool opens Memorial Day weekend and daily beginning on June 2.

when Carlisle School is in session. Swim lessons are available for all ages. Nonresident rates available. The Mechanicsburg Outdoor Swimming Pool touts a 22-foot tall water slide and opens Memorial Day weekend, with daily operations begin June 7. Non-residents are welcome. The Shippensburg Memorial Pool offers a water slide, baby pool, dew drop fountain, and concession stand. The pool will be open Memorial Day weekend, but will be closed during school days. Non-resident rates available. The Camp Hill Municipal Pool will be open for Memorial Day and the first weekend in June. The pool will open daily beginning June 6. Non-resident rates are available to those who live in Lemoyne Borough, Wormleysburg Borough, Hampden Township, Lower Allen Township and East Pennsboro Township. Lemoyne Pool will also open for Memorial Day, but will not be open while school is in session. However, after school hours are available June 2-6 and Aug. 25-28. Non-resident rates available.

Golf to be enjoyed by the whole family At one time the perception of golf was that it was mostly enjoyed by older gentleman in South Carolina or Florida. However, the influx of courses in the Cumberland Valley have made it a very popular destination for those looking to tee-off. One course is a hole-in-one for everyone. Driving down 1-81 in Mechanicsburg it is hard not to notice the beautiful green grass and scenic golf course known as Rich Valley Golf. Rich Valley has something for everyone, including an 18-hole course, a beginner’s 3-hole course, and even a mini-golf course. In addition to the golf is Nolo’s Bar & Restaurant. All skill levels and all ages are welcome to enjoy Rich Valley. The golf game can some-

times be challenging or intimidating to new players. It may be hard to find an opportunity to get your feet wet. Rich Valley offers a Beginner’s Course designed to help those who are new to the game or haven’t played for a long time. The threehole course is designed with different tee boxes, allowing you to play up to 9 holes. There is also a driving range available to practice your swing and opportunities to attend designated clinics with a pro to better craft your skill. After you’ve trained and prepared to be the next Tiger Woods, it’s time to hit the 18-Hole, Par 71 Championship Course. Test your game on the bent grass course all year round (weather permitting). If the 18-Hole Cham-

pionship Course is a little too advanced or you’ve got the whole family, Rich Valley recently added a Mini-Golf course. The 18-Hole miniature course offers a fun family experience and is open 7-days a week. Rich Valley is also one of the only handicapped accessible mini-golf courses in the area. After you’ve completed the course that fits you best it’s time to enjoy some great food at Nolo’s Bar & Restaurant. Nolo’s has a better than par selection of salads, sandwiches, burgers, and wings, with a variety of beer of tap. Nolo’s also hosts banquet events, like reunions, birthdays, and weddings.

Mechanicsburg has won Harrisburg’s “Simply The Best” public golf course for the better half of the last decade. Play all 18 holes, get a private lesson, or eat at the Caddyshack Restaurant. The Carlisle Barracks Golf Course is available to current active military, veterans, and civilians. A driving range and practice putting green is included. M a ya p p l e G o l f C l u b in Carlisle recently went through renovations and provides a driving range and teaching facility. After your round of golf, eat at Fiddler’s Bar & Grille. Liberty Forge Golf located on Lisbum Road in Mechanicsburg offers an 18-hole Other notable course, 6 of which has wagolf courses ter in play. Introducing Linwood Estate Central Pennsylvania’s newest premier wedding and event venue Linwood Estate, Central Pennsylvania’s newest premier wedding and event estate, offers guests a beautifully breathtaking venue for their upcoming wedding or celebration. Nestled in Pennsylvania’s Great Appalachian Valley and home to immaculate gardens, expansive lush lawns, historic Greek revival architecture, and incredible views, Linwood Estate promises to deliver the perfect event that is sure to exceed expectations! By offering multiple picturesque ceremony and reception locations, each complete with the surrounding quintessential scenes of the rolling Appalachian Mountain Range, the Estate is the ideal location for any summer wedding. Since its construction in the 1800s, Linwood Estate has acted as an icon in the Carlisle community and, in years past, has operated strictly as a private estate. Named as a tribute to the Estate’s former owner, Linwood B. Phillips, the property includes several locations that are also dubbed after those from the previous lineage of ownership. Recent renovation projects have succeeded in capturing the Estate’s 19th century historic charm while enhancing the property with modern amenities, resulting in the perfect venue for any occasion. With summer just around the corner, Linwood Estate is gearing up for its first wedding season. With its gorgeous gardens in full bloom, grounds flaunt-

ing green, lush lawns and flowing fountains emanating tranquility, the Estate is undoubtedly the perfect venue for a summer wedding. By partnering with Linwood Estate’s wedding concierge, brides will embark on a distinct journey that revolves around her and her fiancé’s love story and vision to produce an unforgettable wedding celebration. Linwood Estate offers brides the choice of several ceremony, cocktail hour and reception locations throughout the property including Linwood Mansion, the Blue Mountain Terrace, The Appalachian Ballroom and Linwood Gardens & Labyrinth. Because Linwood Estate only hosts one wedding at a time, brides are encouraged to make the estate truly their own for a day. While Linwood Estate can accommodate several different inspired ideas for a wedding, favorite selections include an intimate or large ceremony on the North Lawn with Linwood Mansion or the Appalachian Mountain Range as an iconic backdrop for exchanging vows. After the ceremony, guests have the option to step through Linwood Mansion’s classic French doors onto the beautiful Blue Mountain Terrace, which serves as a breathtaking location for a cocktail and hors d’oeuvre hour. The celebration can then continue in the chandelier-laden, barn-inspired Appalachian Ballroom, which seats up to 250

guests comfortably. In addition to the above locations, the Estate also offers bridal parties the exclusive use of The Bridal Parlor and The Cottage. The Bridal Parlor, located in one of Linwood Mansion’s second floor suites, was custom designed with the art of pampering in mind. The Parlor is home to a relaxing and serene atmosphere complete with floor to ceiling mirrors and copious amounts of natural light that encourages a bride and her bridesmaids to prepare for the special day ahead. Likewise, The Cottage offers a unique hideaway for the groom and his groomsmen to prepare for the day ahead. With four separate suites, each with their own full bathroom, a shared common area complete with a flat screen TV and a private kitchenette, The Cottage is a great location for prewedding preparation and relaxation. In the event that guests wish to continue their fairytale and extend their stay at Linwood Estate, there are eight rooms, plus the Linwood Master Suite, available for overnight stay. Four of these rooms are located in Linwood Mansion while the remaining four are located in The Cottage. The special newlyweds get to stay in the Linwood Master Suite for their wedding night as a special gift from Linwood Estate. All guests who spend the night will receive complimentary breads, pastries, and juices the following morning.

In addition to weddings, the Estate can also be easily transformed for an intimate business gathering of 20 or a large-scale gala of 500. The Estate also welcomes social events ranging from bridal and baby showers to retirement and birthday parties. Flex your muscle at Carlisle during the summer The Carlisle Events schedule runs 14 weekends and spans January to November. Of the ten shows held in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, three bring some of the best American Muscle together in one place – the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds. Carlisle’s “Summer of Muscle” features the Carlisle Ford Nationals, Carlisle GM Nationals and Carlisle Chrysler Nationals. Annually, they are some of the most popular events on the schedule and this year, each host special displays, reunions, guests and showcase that will leave guests wanting more. With over 16 miles of paved walk ways onsite and 82 acres of property to fill up, the grounds at Carlisle certainly are an automotive lover’s paradise. As a company, Carlisle Events is celebrating 40 years in 2014 and each of the three Summer of Muscle events also hosts a special anniversary, including at the Ford show, June 6-8. 2014 is the 110th Anniversary of Ford and the 50th Anniversary of the fabled Ford Mustang. When added together, Carlisle will be home to some amazing pieces of automotive history via special displays and honors. First, to honor Ford itself, Building G is slated to host a 110 car/truck display that will do its best to showcase a true automotive timeline. Committed to date are cars ranging from as early as 1929, though submissions are coming in daily and it’s a safe bet that even more vintage classics will find their way to Carlisle. As of now, a trio of Brewster cars and the following marks are involved too: Edsel, Torino, Fairlane, Galaxie, Thunderbird, Bronco, Model A, F100, Country Squire and so many more!

Carlisle Ford Nationals is one of the most popular events on the Carlisle Fairgrounds schedule. As Mustangs go, there will be lots of them. The Mustang is Ford muscle through and through and as it turns 50, onsite displays will honor its history. First, there is a 50 car/50 year display. One Mustang from each year of production will be available. This compliments perfectly two other special Mustang displays, including a Special Edition factory display where some very unique and in most cases, one-off cars can be seen. Another great draw will be the 2015 Ford Mustang and 2015 Ford F-150, both new and to date, not available for purchase. Confirmed for the event is at least one preproduction model of each. The new Mustang and new F-150 bring much hype to Carlisle and this excitement will be accompanied by Ford engineers and representatives from the company. They’ll be hosting walkaround talks throughout the weekend on the new offerings from Ford in and around

the Ford Racing Garage. Surrounded by historic celebrations, the future of Ford will also be on display and is a must-see attraction. While three days simply isn’t enough time to see all the cars at Carlisle, it does provide a great timeframe to see what is on display and to experience the additional aspects of the weekend. Saturday evening the Fords go downtown for the always popular Downtown Carlisle Parade and Street Party, the Carlisle Expo Center hosts the Ford Go Further Ride and Drive Experience all weekend and autocross enthusiasts can take passes on the course and speak with Ford experts on how to better enhance their ride. Speaking of which, the Ford Racing Garage is back at Carlisle too, providing onsite installations at no charge all while guests walk the grounds and enjoy the show! Making the weekend even more exciting is an all-new contest promoted by Ford

Racing and Carlisle Events. Thousands will enter, but only one will win the shopping spree of a lifetime, a $2,000 Ford Racing Performance Parts Giveaway. Registration is live now via www.CarlisleEvents.com/ GiveAways and the drawing is held on Saturday, June 9 sometime after 2 p.m. Finally and maybe most significant for Ford weekend, Carlisle Events is pleased to announce that four Matech GT1 race cars that completed at the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans will be making their U.S. debut during event weekend. This is the first-time ever that these cars have been state side and will certainly be a draw for race and performance fans of all ages. Just two weeks after the Ford show, GM enthusiasts have their turn with the Carlisle GM Nationals, June 20-22. As part of the show, the next summer milestone celebration is based around the Pontiac GTO. As part of

the showcase, enthusiasts can meet a trio of men who were responsible for the development of the GTO, Milt Schornack, Russ Gee and Bill Collins. Schornack, Gee and Collins together and individually did some great things to further the project with the blessing of GM, while also taking a few positive shortcuts that took advantage of loopholes within production boundaries to create a car affectionately known as the Goat. In addition to these three minds, Schornack brings with him an experimental 1969 GTO complete with a Ram Air V engine. Only 200 of these engines were ever built and guests will see a truly experimental car that never was officially produced. Also coming to Carlisle is an original Monkeemobile which was used on the TV program “The Monkees.” Not only has the car carried some very famous people, it also has a pretty infamous back story. At one point, the

car went with The Monkees to Australia for touring and promotional purposes but never came back state side. Then, after a Puerto Rican drug lord purchased the car, he had it painted pink and it was used as a shuttle for guests at one of his hotels. Following his arrest, the car was seized and ultimately sold. Now, its owners, who are New Jersey-based, have shined it up and restored it to its original form in order to showcase at events like the Carlisle GM Nationals. Another popular draw, especially for fans of the ‘70s movie “Smokey and the Bandit,” is a feature called the Bandit Run. The Bandit Run is a car cruise/road rally of sorts and is designed to honor the film as well as to encourage car enthusiasts to drive their collector cars rather than simply hauling them from show to show or worse, not showing them off at all. The Bandit Run starts at Carlisle and, over the span of a week, makes its way to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In conjunction with the run, guests at Carlisle will see a replica tractor-trailer that Jerry Reed’s character the Snowman drove, plus the downtown Carlisle Theatre will screen Bandit for everyone’s enjoyment. Further, a nice array of Bandit Trans-Am cars will be at Carlisle too. Last, but by no means least, guests coming to Carlisle will want to be sure to visit the Solid Lifter Showroom. This display, located in and around Building G just outside of Gate 1, showcases a special 1969 display. Cars included will be rare and in some cases, one of one or part of a very limited production run. Demand for this display is such See Cars, I12

Cars Continued from I11 that a tent has been added within the Building G parking lot to accommodate even more Solid Lifter Showroom cars. This display is FREE and the community is welcome to visit. Finally, the show also includes fan favorites like a dyno machine, swap meet, car corral, onsite autocross ridealongs, burnouts, beauty, kids activities, the women’s oasis and more. As the summer months churn forward, the hottest month hosts one of the hottest shows on the schedule. The Chrysler Nationals run July 11-13 and as always, this weekend brings enthusiasts from around the country and even from around the world. The event unofficially launches on Thursday, July 10, with a kickoff party and cruise in at Cumberland Valley Motors in nearby Mechanicsburg. The free kick-off, presented by the Mopar Rebellion Car Club, draws upwards of 400+ cars and provides yet another great outlet for Mopar enthusiasts to congregate, talk shop and catch up on happenings since last year’s show. Throughout the weekend, the 100-year history of Dodge will be front and center. Unique displays include a special Race Hemi Reunion, a pre-war car display, an A12 Reunion and a special 50th Anniversary display of the popular Plymouth Barracuda. The A12 showcase can be found within and around Building Y, while the ‘Cudas and Barracudas will be positioned in Building T. Numerous special guests are scheduled to appear as part of these special celebrations including Don Grotheer, Bob Riggle, Shirley Shahan,

Mr. Norm and more. In addition to the overall happenings, each day offers something special too. Friday, the first official day of the event, is also Collector Car Appreciation Day. Join guests for a special mid-day ceremony with show-specific guests, award- winning cars and more. This day is designed to recognize the importance of the Collector Car hobby and features proclamations, speeches and a collector car showcase in front of the stage. Friday’s festivities will also include a birthday party to celebrate Dodge’s centennial. Included on stage will be the legendary Golden Commandos and Ramchargers race teams, local politicians, representatives from SEMA, Carlisle Events ownership and more. Saturday welcomes back all of the same guests from Friday and brings even more excitement and activities. Those onsite can meet Andre and Renaud Veluzat – builders of what pop culture knows as the General Lee. The fun continues with additional seminars that vary in presentation, but ultimately cater to one common theme: the love, care or history of the Mopar brand. Guests will also want to catch the Dodge Power Rallye Tour. Carlisle is one of approximately 50 scheduled tour stops and at Carlisle, a full showcase of 2014 Dodge branded vehicles, including the Charger, Challenger, Dart, Durango, Grand Caravan and Journey will be on display. There will also be special edition vehicles, plus the Charger SRT and Challenger SRT. The Rallye Power Tour brings with it the opportunity to test drive the full line of Dodge vehicles.

What also makes Saturday great is that it wraps with the Mopar Hall of Fame ceremonies which take place about 30 minutes from Carlisle in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. This sees some of the most iconic members of the Mopar community receive their deserved recognition for contributions and achievements within the automotive community. The best part is, this truly unique event is open to the public. Other great show aspects include the massive all-Mopar-themed swap meet, a car corral, burnouts, beauty, an awards parade, club competition, autocross challenge that includes Hotchkis Sport Suspension and best of all, the chance to win a Hemi! Via Photo courtesy of the Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau a partnership with Mus- Ford cars are on display at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. cle Motors, Mopar Muscle Magazine and Easy-Run Test Stands, Carlisle Events will award a third generation Hemi engine to one lucky enthusiast. Though monster type engines have been awarded in the past, this one is a little tamer, making it more of a prize that “anyone” can use in their collector car. Just like the Ford Racing parts giveaway, registration is available online at www. CarlisleEvents.com/Giveaways. So … what’s your brand of muscle? It doesn’t matter the answer because everyone loves a good muscle car and muscle cars live at Carlisle! Spend a day, a weekend or entire six week span that covers the Carlisle Ford Nationals, Carlisle GM Nationals and Carlisle Chrysler Nationals. However much time you spend at Carlisle, you won’t regret it for a minute. Unless of course, you only spend a minute at Carlisle!

Plenty to see and do along the river If I asked 100 people their favorite summertime activities, I would be able to take that list and visit one small area in the Cumberland Valley to experience just about all of them. That small area is along the Susquehanna River in Wormleysburg. The list includes outdoor dining, boating, mini golf, picnics, baseball, and beautiful landscapes and you can do it all in one spot. Before crossing the Market Street Bridge into Harrisburg lies three restaura n ts w i t h i n d o o r a n d outdoor seating, all three overviewing the Susquehanna River. Dukes Riverside Bar and Grille, Dockside Willies, and RockBass Grill all feature their own distinct menu and waterfront features. Dukes has long been known as one of the finest outdoor dining restaurants in Central Pennsylvania. The atmosphere is really enjoyable anytime of the year and the food variety should please everyone in your party. If you’re seeking an elegant ambiance, with great views of the water below and the city skyline above, RockBass Grill is your destination. RockBass Grill’s wide selection of seafood and steak, along with the stylish vibe, make it a great summer companion. Sitting in between Dukes and RockBass is Dockside Willies. As the first part of the name suggests the dock outside sits above the Susquehanna and offers great outside atmosphere, especially in the summer months. Dockside’s food selection covers a wide array of options and specializes in their ovenbrick pizza. Another great specialty is the happy hour offered seven days a week at its unique bar. All three

have their own charm and unique food opportunities. While you overlook the sparkling water during your meal you’ll probably get the urge to get closer to the water. Boating and jet-skiing are both popular activities to be found. Anytime you’re traveling near Wormleysburg and have a view of the Susquehanna River, you’ll notice the Pride of the Susquehanna. The large red and white paddlewheel riverboat is available for public and private cruises. No reservations are required and tours begin at noon, 1:30pm, and 3:30 pm every day. The Pride of Susquehanna offers private parties for weddings, meetings, and anniversaries. There are also special themed nights throughout the summer, including murder mysteries, live music cruises, family-themed events, Maryland Blue Crab Cruises, and Arooga’s Wing Cruises. For more theme nights visit the events calendar on visitcumberlandvalley.com. Another destination with fun activities and attractions like an arcade, horsedrawn carriages, mini-golf, baseball, and more is City Island. Located on an island between Harrisburg and Wormleysburg, City Island proves all of the summertime fun you can handle. City Island hosts multiple sports teams and events, including the Harrisburg City Islanders soccer team and most notably, the Double- A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, the Harrisburg Senators baseball team. The Senators play in the newly-renovated Metro Bank Park and in recent years have featured former major league pros like Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper. The Senators

offer great family activities and promotions, including The Cowboy Monkey Rodeo and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. For those looking to swing the bat themselves, a batting cage is available with both baseball and softball pitching speeds. Right beside the batting cage is an arcade featuring many classic games and prizes for your winnings. City Island provides a great scenic backdrop of the Cumberland Valley on one side and the skyline of Harrisburg on the other. Taking a walk around City Island is a great experience, but visitors can also take a ride on the steam train or horse-drawn c a r r i a ge s. Wa te r f ro n t Photo by Scot Gordon mini-golf is another great City Island experience. An Dukes Riverside Bar and Grille offers indoor and outdoor seating right along 18-hole course right be- the Susquehanna River. side the Susquehanna River adds an exciting and picturesque element to the game. There’s also a great selection of food venders, including a summertime must … ice cream! A great opportunity to visit Wormleysburg and celebrate the area along the river is Wormleysburg River Day on June 28. The event features live music, boat rides, water competitions, and a skatepark. So while you’re along the river this summer, relax and make new summertime memories.
