Q4 2021 BATTLE CRY! Every year at this time I deliver a similar message, but nothing seems more important right now (and I’m very late on my deadline) so here goes.

I know we are in the midst of a very steep, intimidating uphill battle, but I also know we can do this. We have one more quarter, and it’s been one hell of a marathon year, so I’m asking you to dig deep, work hard, and get creative, because that’s what we are going to need from all of you to finish the year strong.

Your resilience over the last 18 months makes me proud.

Your relentless drive is what’s still keeping us in the game.

Last year I thanked you for fighting your way through one of the most difficult recruiting environments we have ever faced. Who knew that was just the beginning? So I’m in the same position I was last year - so proud and appreciative of what we’ve overcome, and confident we can continue to fight this labor battle and deliver on being the employment experts that we are.

We just hosted the Central Ohio Workforce Summit that you can read more about on page 9, but many of our speakers delivered the same message - there’s not just one solution to fix our region’s workforce crisis, there are lots of things we need to do and work together as a team to get them done. So that’s my battle cry for Q4, we need to do all we can in every way we can think of, and do it together, and we will come out on top. ~Jeff Miller President

REINVENTING REYNOLDSBURG

Reynoldsburg Training Program Gets a Lift Last fall we opened our doors to job seekers at our new location in Reynoldsburg. Original plans for the space focused on forklift training, to fill the overwhelming skills gap in the Warehouse and Distribution industry. “Our vision was that if we train interested job seekers, we can get them better jobs and more money, and provide our clients with a qualified, constant pipeline of talent,'' explains Travis Highley, Director of Business Development for the division.

In January, after the team survived peak season during the pandemic, Brian Benson, the team’s trainor kicked off the training program. 2021 has been full of recruiting challenges, but the training program has been a bright spot at Dawson, with a total of 200 successful forklift placements at several partnership clients including Kraft, Nifco, Williams Sonoma, and L Brands.

Recent feedback from one of our working associates validates our efforts. Nick came to our Reynoldsburg office and was already in our system under ‘Use With Caution’ status. His profile aligned with many job seekers that we see in this industry - popping around from warehouse to warehouse, with no reason to stay with any particular employer - leaving for slightly more money or better hours. We gave him a second chance (or maybe it was his third or forth) and put him through our forklift training program. He was excited to try something new and so proud of his certificate he asked for Brian to take his photo. We invested in Nick, and it paid off - he’s still working for us, successfully driving a stand-up reach forklift!

The training center continues to evolve, and will now take a giant leap, adding customer service, logistics, and manufacturing training, in a new collaboration with long-time community workforce partner, Columbus State Community College.

The college has been given grant money to help the underemployed with free training in an effort to earn better jobs. Not only will our Reynoldsburg office be home to their newly established accelerated training programs, but Dawson will have the first opportunity to place training graduates into positions.

61% of our starts applied at least a quarter before we placed them, so even though it may not seem worth the effort, it’s important to continue to engage with older job seekers in our system.

If you look at where we get the most applicants and where our starts come from, they don’t line up. Almost half of our applications come from Indeed, but only 8% of our placements came to us from this job board. Quantity doesn’t equal quality.

Referrals are SO important. They are directly responsible for 24% of our new starts, but walk-ins and direct website applications are influenced by referrals. And the only way to get referrals is to deliver EXCELLENT experiences.

One of my first calls I was telling a job seeker the exact position and company. We never heard from them again.

I answered my first inbound call with, “hello?”

Instead of, “thank you for calling Dawson, how may I help you?”

Two stereotypical “intern” moments: going to get donuts for the office one Friday, and assembling/putting out yard signs in busy areas.

I learned a lot of new things, built many new connections, and gained valuable experience in the business world.

A mundane job like calling 30 people who don’t answer can really be elevated by the people who are around you at work.

Understanding people-after speaking to many job seekers from various backgrounds, I learned a lot about their motivations and wants as a potential employee.

Dawson genuinely cares about its internal employees, as well as the job seekers and communities the company serves.

Dawson presented the second Central Ohio Workforce Summit on Thursday, October 7. The hybrid event hosted 40 in-person guests and more than 200 virtual attendees and focused on topics addressing our challenging workforce environment. The event kicked-off with a welcome from Columbus Business First’s Editor and Publisher, Nick Fortine, followed by an engaging keynote from Andy Rose, President and CEO of Worthington Industries.

Favorite/Most Notable Project: Definitely the work in Pickaway. The ability to work under so many talented divisions here working for a single goal was something really unique to experience.

Intern Moment: One time, I told a Job Seeker he was good to go. He left, and the front desk girls were like “where is his drug test?” – so I had to chase him down! I didn't know how to administer a drug test, so we had to wait for Alex to come down and teach me. What a crazy coincidence that we had a whole week dedicated to excellent customer experiences shortly after that…

Biggest Takeaway: Opportunity comes in many forms. That might sound super deep. But I come from a little college in the middle of Nowhere, Ohio.

Yet, Mari Moore from Dawson was standing there. Someone from Columbus? At my school? She needed an intern. That chance meeting allowed me an entire summer full of opportunity and mentorship. I built friendships and relationships that will last. I was able to share ideas and actually be heard.

Now I am looking at my future dead in the eye. I found a blank canvas to paint my dreams and visions on. Every kid wants to change the world. Only this kid found not only the place to do so, but the people to do it with.

Andy’s message covered many of the pain points we are experiencing, with voluntary salaried turnover up 50% over last summer, which aligns with our voluntary turnover change since 2019 of 51%. Andy discussed long-term solutions such as automation, but shared how Worthington Industries is committed to building our local talent with community workforce programs. They strongly believe in student outreach programs including a partnership with three local high schools where WI employees facilitate in-classroom training covering soft and technical skills and on-site work at one of their Columbus area facilities.

The goal of this program is to provide the students with hands-on experience while building their talent pipeline.

The program has demonstrated success with 60 graduates who are now full-time WI employees.

Matt Backiewicz moderated the panel discussion featuring Courtney Falato, Vice President & Program Officer of Global Philanthropy at JPMorgan Chase; Cheryl Hay, Executive Director of Talent Strategy at Columbus State Community College; Lark Mallory, President of The Affordable Housing Trust; and Kenny McDonald, President and CEO of One Columbus. Panelists faced tough questions regarding the Great Resignation as a result of the pandemic, like how we replace the large number of retirees that exited the workforce prematurely and why the female labor market has been slower to rebound than any other.

All panelists agreed that the pandemic magnified existing issues around creating a strong workforce and recognized the need to address the barriers together including childcare, housing, transportation, access to education. dawsoncareers.com | 9
