In memoriam The late Charlotte J. van der Seijs (1937-2007) was a proud resident of Lommel. When she died she left a fortune to a private foundation for the benefit of the Lommel GlazenHuis. The Dutch Charlotte J. van der Seijs was born in Utrecht on 27 December 1937 and after living in Amsterdam (NL), Barcelona (SP) and Brasschaat (BE) she came to live in Lommel in 1999. She was an active member of many cultural organizations and ‘Friend for life’ of several museums. She showed a great interest in the erection of the glass centre GlazenHuis and decided to set up a private foundation intended to promote the activities of the Flemish Centre for Contemporary Glass Art and to enhance the cultural climate in the city of Lommel. On 19 November 2007, the day after her death, the private foundation Charlotte J. van der Seijs acquired the authorization of the Minister of Justice to accept this bequest definitively.

— Wijlen Charlotte J. van der Seijs (1937-2007) was een trotse inwoonster van Lommel. Bij haar overlijden liet ze een vemogen na aan een private stichting ten bate van het Lommelse GlazenHuis. De Nederlandse Charlotte J. van der Seijs werd geboren in Utrecht op 27 december 1937 en kwam na verblijf in Amsterdam (NL), Barcelona (SP) en Brasschaat (BE) in 1999 in Lommel wonen. Zij was actief lid van talrijke culturele verenigingen en ‘Vriend voor het leven’ van meerdere musea. Zij toonde een grote belangstelling voor de bouw van het glascentrum GlazenHuis en besloot een private stichting op te richten die tot doel heeft de activiteiten van het Vlaams Centrum voor Hedendaagse Glaskunst te bevorderen en het culturele klimaat in de stad Lommel te stimuleren. Op 19 november 2007, de dag na haar overlijden, werd de private stichting ‘Charlotte J. van der Seijs’ door de Minister van Justitie machtiging verleend tot het definitief aanvaarden van bovenvermelde schenking.

AN INTERNATIONAL CONFRONTATION EEN INTERNATIONALE CONFRONTATIE For the region but also for Flanders, the Lommel GlazenHuis is a unique project and a very ambitious one as this renowned Flemish Centre for Contemporary Glass Art allows Flanders to spread its glass culture globally. According to art expert Jan Hoet the GlazenHuis reminds us immediately of Leonardo da Vinci; architect Philippe Samyn created an amazing glass centre, of a high technical and artistic quality.

With the organization of the International Glass Prize Charlotte van der Seijs, the Private Foundation encourages national and international talent. With great pride I can say that also in 2015 the International Glass Art Prize aroused the interest of numerous artists from all continents. Again, this International Prize - this remarkable presentation of differing views - becomes a platform where art and craft meet, a multicultural event enriching our society with quality and diversity.

The Board of Directors of the Private Foundation Charlotte van der Seijs appreciates the efforts made by the artists, the commitment of the jury and the city council and expresses the hope that the International Glass Art Prize will become a strong Flemish tradition.

Voor de regio, maar ook voor Vlaanderen, is het Lommels GlazenHuis een uniek project, zeer ambitieus omdat dit gerenommeerde Vlaams Centrum voor Hedendaagse Glaskunst Vlaanderen de mogelijkheid biedt zijn glascultuur mondiaal uit te dragen. Volgens kunstkenner Jan Hoet doet het GlazenHuis onmiddellijk denken aan Leonardo da Vinci: architect Philippe Samyn creĂŤerde een wonderlijk glascentrum, technisch en artistiek hoogstaand.

Met de organisatie van de Internationale Glasprijs Charlotte van der Seijs stimuleert de Private Stichting nationaal en internationaal talent. Met grote fierheid kan worden gesteld dat de Internationale Glaskunstprijs ook in 2015 de belangstelling heeft gewekt van talrijke kunstenaars uit alle continenten. Opnieuw wordt deze Internationale Prijs, die opmerkelijke confrontatie van uiteenlopende inzichten, een platform waar ambacht en kunst elkaar ontmoeten, een multicultureel gebeuren, dat onze samenleving verrijkt met kwaliteit en diversiteit.

LOMMEL - CITY OF SAND AND GLASS LOMMEL - STAD VAN ZAND EN GLAS For most people glass art is best known by - for example Val Saint Lambert or the Murano glass from Venice - but the only real GLAZENHUIS is in Flanders, in Lommel!

Here, glass art and glass design got their own house where the many possibilities of the material are being fully explored and thus ‘borders’ are being cut across in the broadest sense of the word.

More and more glass artists are finding their way to Lommel. The exhibition ‘International Glass Prize 2015’ with the theme of ‘The Process’ will undoubtedly contribute to the international character of the GlazenHuis. In the coming months, Lommel will be the Mekka of many glass artists and of glass art. Our city will be immersed in a wide variety of glass artists who in turn will captivate many art and glass enthusiasts. In the glass studio you can experience the artistic process every day, leading to the artist’s ‘glass story’.

Would you like to blow glass yourself? The glass-artists-in-residence are glad to help you get started and also offer companies and groups the opportunity to hold team building activities, or attend demonstrations and workshops. Your visit to the GlazenHuis will make you want to ‘experience glass’. So do not miss the museum’s own Glass Shop because you can find nice souvenirs, original glass gifts, business gifts and real works of art there. Some are Handmade@Lommel and this is just the extra asset we can successfully present.

The glass tower of the GLAZENHUIS is an attraction in itself. A climb to the top gives you a nice reward. A unique view over Lommel, where sand and glass belong.

Glaskunst is bij de mensen vooral bekend door bijvoorbeeld Val Saint Lambert of het Muranoglas uit Venetië, maar het enige echte GLAZENHUIS staat in Vlaanderen, in Lommel!

Hier heeft glaskunst en -design een eigen huis gekregen waarin de vele mogelijkheden van het materiaal ten volle worden uitgespeeld en daarmee ‘grenzen’ worden doorbroken in de ruimste zin van het woord.

Vele glaskunstenaars vinden steeds meer hun weg naar Lommel. De tentoonstelling ‘International Glass Prize 2015’ met als thema ‘Het Proces’ draagt zonder twijfel bij tot de internationale uitstraling van het GlazenHuis. Lommel is de komende maanden het mekka van vele glaskunstenaars en van glaskunst. Onze stad wordt ondergedompeld in een grote variatie van glaskunstenaars die op hun beurt talrijke kunst- en glasliefhebbers weten te bekoren. In het atelier kunt u elke dag opnieuw het artistieke proces beleven, wat leidt tot het ‘glasverhaal’ van de kunstenaar.

Wilt u zelf glasblazen? De glaskunstenaars ‘in residence’ helpen u graag op weg en bieden tevens de mogelijkheid aan bedrijven en groepen om teambuildings, demonstraties en workshops bij te wonen. Uw bezoek aan het GlazenHuis doet je ‘zin in glas’ krijgen. Bezoek dus zeker de eigen Glasshop want u vindt er leuke souvenirs, originele glascadeaus, relatiegeschenken en echte kunstwerken. Given its prevalence in daily life for both utilitarian and decorative purposes, it would be difficult to imagine today's world without glass.

While its history goes back thousands of years, it is only relatively recently that glass has been used as an artistic medium. It was not until the 20th century that glassblowers began to experiment with new techniques and designs, and it immediately became clear to them just how unique and magical glass as a material and medium is.

Glas is als gebruiks- en siervoorwerp niet meer weg te denken uit ons dagelijks leven.

Hoewel haar geschiedenis al duizenden jaren teruggaat, is glas als artistiek medium nog relatief jong. Pas in de 20ste eeuw begonnen glasblazers te experimenteren met nieuwe technieken en vormgeving. En meteen werd duidelijk hoe magisch en uniek glas als materiaal en medium is.

Hoewel ons land op het vlak van glaskunst een laatbloeier is, ontwikkelde zich in Vlaanderen ondertussen een divers aanbod van glaskunst.

Kenmerkend voor glaskunstenaars is hun veelzijdigheid als beeldend kunstenaars, als vormgevers, als meesters. Ze experimenteren met vormen, kleuren en technieken, ze combineren glas met andere materialen, ze bespelen grenzen tussen canon en vernieuwing, ze verbinden kunstdisciplines.

Deze veelzijdigheid is verrijkend voor ons kunstenlandschap en moet gekoesterd worden.

Although our country was something of a late developer in the field of glass art, there is now a wide range of glass art in Flanders. What distinguishes glass artists is their versatility - as visual artists, as designers, and as masters of their art.

They experiment with shapes, colours and techniques, combine glass with other materials, manipulate the boundaries between the established canon and innovation, and create connections between art disciplines. This versatility enriches our artistic landscape and must be cherished.

Glaskunstenaars veruitwendigen authentiek vakmanschap of meesterschap. Vlaanderen is altijd gekend geweest omwille van kwalitatief vakmanschap, en is dat vandaag nog steeds. Ambachten zoals glaskunst zijn tegelijk inspiratiebron en broedplaats voor innovatie. De uitdaging voor de glaskunst is om het ambachtelijke van glas nieuw leven in te blazen in een hedendaagse context. De International Glass Prize Exhibition gaat deze uitdaging aan, en vestigt de aandacht op het meesterschap van de glaskunst. Het thema van deze editie, ‘het proces’, sluit perfect bij deze doelstelling aan.

Glass artists externalise an authentic craftsmanship or mastery of their art. Flanders has always been well known for its high standards of craftsmanship, and still is today. Crafts such as glass art serve both as a source of inspiration and as a breeding ground for innovation. The challenge for glass artists is to breathe new life into glass craftsmanship within the contemporary context. The International Glass Prize Exhibition is taking on this challenge, focusing attention on the mastery involved in glass art. The theme of this year's exhibition, which is 'The Process', dovetails perfectly with this objective.

Een dynamisch en bloeiend kunstenlandschap heeft nood aan kunstenaars die zich artistiek kunnen ontwikkelen. Als minister van Cultuur vind ik het belangrijk dat beloftevolle, creatieve talenten voldoende kansen krijgen om hun werk te tonen en hun oeuvre te verdiepen. Ook hier vervult de International Glass Prize Exhibition een voorbeeldrol.

If an artistic landscape is to flourish and be dynamic, then it needs artists who are able to develop artistically. As the Minister for Culture, I think it is important that promising, creative talents are given plenty of opportunities for

exhibiting their work and for exploring it in more depth. In this respect, too, the International Glass Prize Exhibition is playing an exemplary role.

De expo geeft gerenommeerde en jonge kunstenaars uit binnen- en buitenland de kans om hun werk aan een breed publiek te tonen. Ze toont diverse artistieke interpretaties van glas die de confrontatie aangaan met elkaar, een professionele jury en het publiek. De Glass Prize Exhibition biedt de kunstenaars ook de mogelijkheid om gebruik te maken van de atelierfaciliteiten van het GlazenHuis.

Hierdoor krijgen ze een uniek platform om te experimenteren en om zich te verdiepen in hun artistiek werk.

The exhibition is giving both well-established and young artists at home and abroad the opportunity of displaying their work to a wide audience.

It is providing the space for a range of artistic interpretations of glass, all of which challenge each other, the professional jury and the general public. The International Glass Prize Exhibition also offers artists the opportunity of making use of the studio facilities at the GlazenHuis. This means that they have a unique platform at their disposal, from which they can experiment and explore their artistic work in more depth.

De Glass Prize Exhibition is een initiatief van de private Stichting Charlotte J. van der Seijs, en illustreert het belang van private steun voor kunst.

Zonder dit fonds zou dit initiatief niet mogelijk geweest zijn. Door de samenwerking tussen het GlazenHuis en de Stichting krijgt glaskunst niet alleen meer financiële ademruimte, maar wordt ook een breder maatschappelijk en lokaal draagvlak gecreëerd. Ik wil dan ook mijn bijzondere appreciatie uitdrukken voor deze samenwerking.

The Glass Prize Exhibition is an initiative of the private Charlotte J. van der Seijs Foundation and shows how important private support for the arts is. Without financial support, the exhibition would not have been possible. The cooperation between the GlazenHuis and the Charlotte J. van der Seijs Foundation has not only increased the financial breathing space for glass art, but has also created greater social and local support.

Door het creëren van een internationaal platform voor glaskunst kunnen zowel het GlazenHuis als de deelnemende Vlaamse kunstenaars zich meten aan internationale standaarden. Both the GlazenHuis and the International Glass Prize are unique in Flanders and the rest of Belgium. The Glass Prize is also filling a gap in international terms, as art and design competitions focusing on glass are few and far between.

The Glass Prize is extremely important in terms of the standing of the GlazenHuis on the international stage. Through the creation of an international platform for glass art, both the GlazenHuis and the participating artists can now compete at international standards. I can only offer my support for such international ambition.

THE UNIVERSALITY OF THE PROCESS DE UNIVERSALITEIT VAN HET PROCES Time is an almost incomprehensible phenomenon and is irrefutably linked to man’s existential quest. Is time a linear or cyclical movement? Is time a succession of ‘now moments’ or is it a continuous stream? These are but a few of the many questions that are frequently asked. It is generally believed that time only exists in the material world and also that there is a cohesion between time and change in the form of movements, events, processes, etc. Philosophers like Heraclitus and Henri Bergson present it as duration, as a permanent stream. That this is not just a philosophical interpretation is evidenced by the fact that it is postulated that the creative process is not an event but a continuous ‘becoming’, often in religious circles too.

This perpetual flow has the qualities of a kaleidoscope and, like it, takes many different approaches.

Whether we are talking about moving, becoming, developing, growing, evolving, mutating, transforming, expiring or degenerating, or so many other possibilities... within a changeable context these are all usable words, but there are nuances and recognition is likewise varied. Do not ‘expired’ and ‘lapsed’ provoke more of the idea of something that is coming to an end and isn’t the perception of growing and evolving more positively charged than changing and transforming. And if we assume a positive appreciation, for example of the word ‘evolution’, isn’t this appreciation very relative? Doesn’t it seem a little cynical to talk of the evolution of man when we look around us and see how he treats nature and his fellow man?

On the one hand there are changes that occur outside man – which sometimes have no direct sensually perceptible consequences for his kind and at other times have an inescapable and final impact – and on the other hand there are changes that are caused by man himself – whether consciously or unconsciously. When he deliberately sets things in motion, we can assume he does so for a purpose. For motives which of course can be either positive or negative.

An important part of human action is aimed at cultivating his ‘environment’. And here too the word need not have an unambiguously positive meaning. In essence, the word cultivate is not a synonym for ‘raising something to a higher level’. It actually means that man is going to leave his mark on his natural environment; that he is going to manipulate it. And he does this to his heart’s content as the renowned curator and museum director Jan Debbaut once wrote: ‘We have created a new, surrogate nature, where each tree is planted, every river is forced into an artificial bed, and animals are bred biogenetically.’ We would probably find it difficult to separate the positive connotation surrounding the word ‘cultivate’ from unquenchable human pride. Man, who sets himself above nature, to which he is ‘connected’. Man, who attempts to make his environment tailor-made to suit himself, which is cultivating ... the creation of an environment that is ‘livable’ for him’, through functionality, comfort, beauty, etc.

And this is where the meaning of craftsman, designer, artist and other creative people takes shape.

They participate in that seemingly inevitable and imperative process. The last word is not chosen randomly here, it refers to things that change and also externalizes a hint of neutrality. Indeed, a process can also refer to both evolution and de generation, and moreover, in the context of this exhibition, is not unimportant because the word is also often associated with ‘creation’ and ‘the creative’. The creation process and the creative process ... these appear to be different ways of saying the same thing and

yet they are distinct. The creation process lays more emphasis on the process (of making), while the creative process alludes to the artistic spark that occurs and is depicted. In this sense, the observability of the creation process and the creative process is also on another level.

Based on the approach taken, the creative process also generally gives the impression of being less visible than the creation process. You don’t have to be an expert to understand how ‘Bicycle Wheel’ by Marcel Duchamp came about or how his ‘Fountain’ found its way into the exhibition area, but it is not easy for the spectator to understand how he came up with this idea. Indeed, the distinction between the creation process and the creative process can be found in specialist literature when one takes a closer look at different stages of the creative process, and suggests that, starting out from the problem and the subsequent ‘theorization’ of the problem, one generally finds a creative solution by way of the ‘aha moment’ postulated by Karl Bühler. Moreover, in the same literature, we are told that even the practical realization of the solution is considered to be a part of the creative process, but at the same time the following is added: ‘without this stage being considered in the strict sense as a part of the creative process.’

The significance and impact of this ‘aha moment’ on the result will of course differ radically, depending on the complexity of the medium used.

For example, the distance to be covered between the intuition that led Beethoven to his fateful motif and the final ‘Fifth Symphony’ would have been many times greater than the distance Picasso had to travel in 1942 when he came upon the idea of using the combination of bicycle handlebars and ditto saddle to produce a symbol of the Spanish national spirit: The ‘Bull’s Head’. That ‘aha-experience’ is not unique to the artist, but he is expected to have greater potential regarding such experiences. If this recurrent quality is not present, then the work is often rather pityingly dismissed as coincidental and the artist is then referred to as a ‘flash in the pan’.

As already suggested, the creative process is experienced as a more concrete event, but nevertheless it remains a complex process and it is difficult to talk of clarity, even if we keep the preceding creative process outside the creation process. Within this context therefore, one cannot present a complete picture of all the facets of the process concerned, and we opt for a number of approaches that externalize the complexity. The chosen approaches relate to the viewpoint of the artist, the work of art and the viewer.

The fact that the artist is the engine and the vehicle of the creative process seems obvious to many people, but ultimately, all things considered this is not really so self-evident. The dynamic and total involvement of Jackson Pollock in the production process contrasts sharply with the painting factory of the American Mark Kostabi, who limits himself to the final control of what his designers and painters have put on this world to the honor and glory of Kostabi himself. Between these extremes there are of course many intermediate forms, as is evident from the – sufficiently well - known – interaction between Rubens and his extended studio. Furthermore, we note that, especially in the world of industrial design,

the creation process is often a shared responsibility, because the design and implementation process sometimes assume very different qualities and technical and material requirements.

Also on the level of the significance of the work of art itself, the creation process again plays a major role. A couple approaches which, as well as many others, are fairly important, are the driving force and the interconnectedness of process and meaning that may or may not be linked to this. The dominant view is that the artist controls the process, but as we saw in the previous passage, this act need not be absolute. However, in what follows, we are concerned not so much with the presence of employees, but with the process itself and again with its significance for interpretation.

What can set a process in motion is sometimes very diverse and cannot always be completely controlled. Materials and all kinds of physical and chemical processes can lead to unexpected results. For instance, Keiko Hasegawa, the Japanese ceramist who is known for her Raku pottery, does not have absolute control of her colors and patterns, and Valie Export, who, in 1968, was unable to estimate what the consequences would be when, in the context of her ‘Tapp-und Tastkino’, she went out into the streets so men could touch her breasts. Apart from this afore mentioned inherent unpredictability, there are works of art which are permanently developing or images where the process itself has become the subject of the work. In this case, process and meaning merge together. As far as these last two approaches are concerned, think for example of Marinus Boezem’s ‘Gothic Growing Project’ a ‘green cathedral’ consisting of 176 poplar trees that will continually grow and change, and of Robert Smithson’s landscape interventions in which he showcases his interest in entropy.

Indeed, to this we can add almost all the arts whose presentation is associated with a time lag, as in ‘Performance Art’ and certainly in ‘Land Art’ when it is expressed in the way Richard Long does. Such artistic interventions undoubtedly emphasize the significance of the process. We also found examples where the viewer is made aware, through the image, of technical processes and the specifics that are consistent with them, in the first ‘International Glass Prize’ relating to the work of Maria Bang Espersen and Elisabeth Oertel.

Finally, with regard to the viewer, there is not only his possible involvement, but also the readability of the creative process. This may also vary widely. For example, it is clear that the creation process of a ‘Concetto spaziale’ by Lucio Fontana is much more readable than the creation process of a vase by Emile Gallé. And it is equally clear that the knowledge or the visibility of the creative process can contribute to a different appreciation of the work.

Through its inclusiveness, ‘the process’ is multiple and rich, often complex and cannot always be understood, which makes it so rewarding for the artist. Indeed, isn’t his role analogous to that of the

philosopher and scientist, namely a never-ending quest for the essence of things? And when the creative process and the creative process are placed side by side, we are also repeatedly reminded of the significance of the spiritual and the physical, the spiritual and the material, the transcendental and the earthly, all of which recur in many works of art from all periods and all countries.

— De tijd is een nauwelijks te bevatten fenomeen, onweerlegbaar verbonden met de existentiële zoektocht van de mens. Is tijd een lineaire of een cyclische beweging? Is tijd een opeenvolging van nu-momenten of is tijd een continue stroom? Dit zijn maar een paar van de vele vragen, die weerkerend worden gesteld. Algemeen is er de overtuiging dat er alleen sprake van tijd kan zijn in de materiële wereld en ook ziet men een cohesie tussen tijd en verandering, in de gedaante van bewegingen, gebeurtenissen, processen etc. Filosofen als Heraclitus en Henri Bergson presenteren het als wordende tijd, als een permanente stroom. Dat die invulling bovendien geen louter filosofische aangelegenheid is, blijkt uit het feit dat men, herhaaldelijk ook in religieuze middens, poneert dat het scheppingsproces geen eenmalig gebeuren is, maar een continu ‘worden’.

Dat altijddurend stromen heeft de allures van een caleidoscoop en kent overeenkomstig vele benaderingen. Of we het nu hebben over bewegen, worden, ontwikkelen, groeien, evolueren, muteren, transformeren, verstrijken, degenereren of nog zovele andere ... het zijn binnen een veranderlijke context stuk voor stuk hanteerbare woorden, maar er zijn nuances en evenzo is de waardering onderscheiden. Verwekt verstrijken en verlopen niet veeleer de idee van iets dat ten einde loopt en is de perceptie van groeien en evolueren niet positiever geladen dan veranderen en transformeren. En is indien we uitgaan van een positieve appreciatie, van bijvoorbeeld het woord evolutie, deze waardering niet heel relatief? Klinkt het niet een beetje cynisch te horen spreken van de evolutie van de mens wanneer we rondom ons kijken en registreren hoe hij met de natuur en met zijn medemens omspringt?

Er zijn enerzijds veranderingen die buiten de mens om gebeuren - die de ene keer geen direct zintuiglijk waarneembare gevolgen hebben voor zijn soort en de andere keer een onontkoombare en definitieve impact hebben - en er zijn anderzijds ook veranderingen die door de mens zelf - bewust of onbewust - worden veroorzaakt. Wanneer hij bewust dingen in beweging zet, kunnen we ervan uitgaan dat hij een doel voor ogen heeft. Beweegredenen die uiteraard zowel positief als negatief kunnen zijn.

Een belangrijk deel van het menselijk handelen is gericht op het cultiveren van zijn ‘umwelt’. En ook hier hoeft het woord geen ondubbelzinnig positieve betekenis te hebben. In wezen is het woord cultiveren immers geen synoniem van ‘iets op een hoger niveau tillen’. In se betekent het dat de mens zijn stempel gaat drukken op zijn natuurlijke omgeving, dat hij haar gaat manipuleren. En dat doet hij naar hartenlust zoals de gereputeerde curator en museumdirecteur Jan Debbaut het ooit schreef: ‘Wij hebben een nieuwe surrogaatnatuur geschapen, waarbij iedere boom is aangeplant, iedere rivier in een kunstmatige bedding is gedwongen, en dieren biogenetisch worden gekweekt.’ De positieve connotatie waarmee men het woord cultiveren omhult, is vermoedelijk niet los te denken van de onblusbare menselijke hoogmoed. De mens die zich stelt boven datgene waarmee hij is verbonden, de natuur. De mens poogt van zijn omgeving een habitat op zijn maat te maken, dat is cultiveren ... de creatie van een ‘voor hem’ leefbare omgeving, door functionaliteit, comfort, schoonheid etc.

En hier krijgt de betekenis van ambachtsman, vormgever, kunstenaar en andere creatievelingen gestalte. Zij participeren aan dat blijkbaar onvermijdbaar en dwingend proces. Dat laatste woord wordt hier niet toevallig gekozen, het refereert aan dingen die veranderen en veruitwendigt insgelijks ook een zweem van neutraliteit. Een proces kan immers zowel slaan op evolutie als op degeneratie én bovendien is het in de context van deze tentoonstelling niet onbelangrijk omdat het woord ook dikwijls wordt verbonden met ‘creatie’ en met ‘het creatieve’. Het creatieproces en het creatieve proces ... het lijken verschillende manieren om hetzelfde te vertellen, maar toch zijn ze onderscheiden.

Het creatieproces legt veeleer de nadruk op het (maak)proces, terwijl het creatieve proces eerder alludeert aan de kunstzinnige vonk die over-slaat en verbeeld wordt. In die zin ligt de waarneembaarheid van het creatieproces en van het creatieve proces ook op een ander niveau.

Vanuit de gehanteerde benadering verwekt het creatieve proces doorgaans ook de indruk minder zichtbaar te zijn dan het creatieproces. Je hoeft geen deskundige te zijn om te begrijpen hoe ‘Fietswiel’ van Marcel Duchamp werd gematerialiseerd of hoe zijn ‘Fontein’ in de tentoonstellingsruimte is geraakt, maar het is minder evident om als toeschouwer te vatten hoe hij op een dergelijk idee is gekomen. Het onderscheid tussen het creatieproces en het creatieve proces is trouwens ook in de vakliteratuur terug te vinden, wanneer men verschillende fasen van het creatieve proces onder de loep neemt en stelt dat, vertrekkende vanuit de probleemstelling en de daaropvolgende ‘theoretisering’ van het probleem, men veelal via de – door Karl Bühler geponeerde - ‘aha-erlebnis’, komt tot een creatieve oplossing.

In diezelfde literatuur vermeldt men bovendien dat soms ook nog de praktische verwezenlijking van de oplossing tot het creatieve proces wordt gerekend, maar tegelijkertijd voegt men er aan toe: ‘ zonder dat die fase sensu stricto tot het creatieve proces wordt gerekend’.

De betekenis en de impact van dit ‘aha’-moment op het resultaat zal natuurlijk grondig verschillen naargelang de complexiteit van het gehanteerde medium. Bijvoorbeeld, zo zal de af te leggen afstand tussen de ingeving die bij Beethoven leidde naar zijn noodlotsmotief en de uiteindelijke ‘Vijfde Symfonie’ vele malen groter geweest zijn dan de afstand die Picasso in 1942 diende af te leggen toen hij op de idee kwam om middels de samenvoeging van een fietsstuur en een dito zadel te komen tot een zinnebeeld voor de Spaanse volksgeest: de ‘Stierenkop’. Die ‘aha-erlebnis’ is bovendien geen alleenrecht van de artiest, maar van hem verwacht men een groter potentieel met betrekking tot dergelijke ervaringen. Is die weerkerende kwaliteit niet aanwezig dan wordt het werk vaak wat meewarig afgedaan als toevallig en krijgt de artiest vervolgens het predicaat ‘eendagsvlieg’.

Zoals reeds gesuggereerd, wordt het creatieproces als een concreter gebeuren ervaren, maar niettemin blijft het een complex verloop en is er bezwaarlijk sprake van eenduidigheid, ook wanneer we het voorgaande creatieve proces buiten het creatieproces houden. Daarom is het binnen deze context uitgesloten om een volledig beeld op te hangen van alle facetten van het betreffende proces en wordt er geopteerd voor een aantalinvalshoeken die de complexiteit veruitwendigen. De gekozen benaderingen betreffen het standpunt van de artiest, van het kunstwerken van de toeschouwer.

Dat de kunstenaar de motor en het vervoermiddel is van het creatieproces lijkt voor velen een evidentie, maar uiteindelijk is dat welbeschouwd niet zo’n vanzelfsprekendheid. De dynamische en totale betrokkenheid van Jackson Pollock ten aanzien van het productieproces steekt bijvoorbeeld schril af tegen de schilderijenfabriek van de Amerikaan Mark Kostabi, die zich beperkt tot de eindcontrole van wat zijn ontwerpers en schilders op de wereld hebben gezet tot eer en glorie van Kostabi zelf. Tussen deze extremen

zijn er uiteraard ook tal van tussenvormen zoals blijkt uit de – genoeglijk bekende - wisselwerking tussen Rubens en zijn uitgebreid atelier. En verder merken we op dat vooral in de wereld van de industriële vormgeving het creatieproces vaak een gedeelde verantwoordelijkheid is, omdat het ontwerpproces en het uitvoeringsproces soms zeer uiteenlopende kwaliteiten en technisch-materiële vereisten veronderstellen.

Ook op het niveau van de betekenis van het kunstwerk zelf, speelt het creatieproces weerkerend een ingrijpende rol. Een paar invalshoeken, die naast vele andere, niet zonder belang zijn, zijn de stuwkracht en al dan niet daaraan gekoppeld de verwevenheid van proces en betekenis. De gangbare stelling is dat de kunstenaar het proces stuurt, maar die act hoeft niet absoluut te zijn, zoals we in voorgaande passage zagen. Echter in wat volgt, hebben we het niet zozeer over de aanwezigheid van medewerkers, maar hebben we het over het verloop zelf en weerkerend over de betekenis daarvan voor de interpretatie.

Datgene wat een proces in beweging kan zetten, is soms zeer verscheiden en laat zich niet altijd tot in de puntjes regisseren. Materialen en allerhande fysische en chemische processen kunnen uitmonden in onverwachte resultaten. Zo zal Keiko Hasegawa, de Japanse keramiste die bekend staat omwille van haar Raku aardewerk, geen sluitende controle hebben op haar kleuren en patronen en evenmin kon Valie Export in 1968 inschatten wat de gevolgen zouden zijn, toen ze in het kader van haar ‘Tappund Tastkino’ de straat opging om mannen haar borsten te laten betasten. Benevens die voormelde ingebouwde onvoorspelbaarheid zijn er ook kunstwerken, die permanent in ontwikkeling zijn of zijn er beelden waarbij het proces zelf het onderwerp van het werk is geworden. In dat geval versmelten proces en betekenis. Wat deze beide laatste invalshoeken betreft, denken we respectievelijk bijvoorbeeld aan het ‘Gothic Growing Project’ van Marinus Boezem, een uit 176 populieren bestaande ‘Groene kathedraal’ die voortdurend zal groeien en veranderen én aan die landschappelijke ingrepen van Robert Smithson waar hij zijn interesse voor de entropie etaleerde. We kunnen hier trouwens ook bijna alle kunsten aan toevoegen, waarvan de presentatie gepaard gaat met een tijdsverloop, zoals bij de ‘Performance Art’ of zeker bij de ‘Land Art’, wanneer die wordt ingevuld als door Richard Long. Dergelijke artistieke ingrepen benadrukken zonder twijfel ook de betekenis van het proces.

Voorbeelden van het via het beeld bewust maken van de kijker van technische processen en overeenkomstige eigenheden, vonden we ook op de eerste editie van deze ‘International Glass Prize’ met betrekking tot de werken van Maria Bang Espersen en Elisabeth Oertel.

Tot slot is er ten aanzien van de toeschouwer niet alleen zijn eventuele betrokkenheid, maar is er ook de leesbaarheid van het creatieproces. Deze laatste kan trouwens ook sterk uiteenlopen. Het is bijvoorbeeld duidelijk dat het creatieproces van een ‘Concetto spaziale’ van Lucio Fontana veel leesbaarder is dan het creatieproces van een vaas van Emile Gallé. En het is evenzo duidelijk dat kennis of zichtbaarheid van het wordingsproces kan bijdragen tot een andere waardering van het werk.

‘Het proces’ is vanuit zijn alomvattendheid meervoudig en rijk, het is vaak ook complex en niet altijd te doorgronden en daarom is het ook zo’n dankbaar gegeven voor de artiest. Hebben zij immers geen taak analoog met filosoof en wetenschapper, namelijk een nooit eindigende zoektocht naar het wezen der dingen. En wanneer het creatieve proces en het creatieproces naast elkaar worden geplaatst, worden wij herhaaldelijk ook herinnerd aan de betekenis van het geestelijke en het lichamelijke, van het spirituele en het materiële, van het transcendentale en het aardse, zoals dat allemaal weerkerend is terug te vinden in veel kunstwerken van alle tijden en alle landen.

PROCESSED GLASS

Following the first edition of the International Glass Prize in 2012, we started looking for the identity of The Object. How it is identified and characterized, and whether we can classify it with accurate parameters.

We compared and confronted the art object with the design object.

We identified beauty and described quality.

We then evaluated ‘the product’ and now appreciate ‘the process’.

These italicized process words evolve from a recipe, a trigger, or a command into a clear result. It is a series of actions and events that can be arranged in the time through an analytical, philosophical, biological, physical or chemical procedure.

During the development of this competition, crossover thinking between the domains of visual arts, design, and craft was important. All with respect to the material glass, its physical image, or the artistic connotations with the concept.

This second edition explores the experimental areas under development and sets them alongside the technical limits of the production process or may prefer a conceptual approach to the creative process with the philosophical reference to this material. For example, the selection for this exhibition includes design objects, mixed media sculptures, paintings and graphic work, photo prints, videos and performances, light installations and monumental work in situ.

This approach is closely related to the ideological policy of the GlazenHuis that wants to promote glass in all its aspects and focuses on all manifestations and applications; glass in daily use, glass in design, glass throughout history, glass in the future, glass within contemporary art. Especially giving the latter - ‘glass as an artistic medium’ - a place within the domain of contemporary art, is one of our main aims.

The International Glass Prize is the answer to the request of the Private Foundation Ch. van der Seijs to develop a high-profile activity with an international character for the glass museum GlazenHuis and the city of Lommel.

The Private Foundation perpetuates the wish of Charlotte van der Seijs who during her lifetime fulfilled the position of patron of the arts. The Maecenas who acts as patroness of the artist so that he can devote himself freely to his artistic oeuvre and be free of worries. The principle that the competition is open to all artists and designers without age limit, both students and professionals, individuals and collectives, was an important aspect of this initiative.

For the second edition of the International Glass Prize the total prize money to be awarded amounts to EUR 12,000. Following its own allocation criteria the jury will award the prizes to three laureates at most. For the 2015 edition the following authorities were invited to serve on the jury: Hans Op de Beeck (internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist), Lut Maris (art historian and gallery owner), An Moons (advisor to the Ministry of Culture) and Philip Wiesman (graphic artist and board member of the Charlotte van der Seijs Foundation). They were supported by the curators of this competition: Ilse Van Roy and Jeroen Maes.

In addition to the cash prizes, there are two work periods to win in the glass studio of the GlazenHuis, where the laureates will have free access to all facilities of the workshop and may rely on support of the staff. This will allow artists to engage in an experimental study in a new and stimulating context, focusing on the process. These so-called Artist-in-Residence projects have nowadays become an important breeding ground for research and artistic development. They provide a useful answer to the growing need of artists and designers to not only receive financial assistance, but in the first place to enjoy support in terms of technical expertise, substantive knowledge and access to specific infrastructures.

Possibly even more important than the prize money of the International Glass Prize is the financial compensation to cover the cost of transport of the selected works, in order to offer all artists all over the world the opportunity to participate in this competition and the associated exhibition. In this way they can widen their visibility internationally and present themselves as artists or designers outside the immediate everyday and working environment.

The success of this strategy is demonstrated by the number of entries and the traffic on social media. After nearly 20,000 website visits, 345 artists from 45 nationalities submitted 756 works online, relating to this edition’s theme: The Process. Spread over two rounds of selection, the jury nominated 51 artists from 13 countries, bringing in 61 works that are part of the International Glass Prize Expo.

Naar aanleiding van de eerste editie van de International Glass Prize in 2012 gingen we op zoek naar de identiteit van Het Object. Hoe het wordt geïdentificeerd en gekarakteriseerd, en of we het via nauwkeurige parameters kunnen classificeren.

We vergeleken en confronteerden het kunstvoorwerp met het designobject.

We benoemden schoonheid en beschreven kwaliteit.

We evalueerden toen ‘het product’ en waarderen nu ‘het proces’.

Deze cursieve proceswoorden ontwikkelen zich vanuit een recept, een trigger of een commando tot een duidelijk resultaat. Het is een reeks van acties en gebeurtenissen die via een analytische, filosofische, biologische, fysische of chemische procedure geordend kunnen worden in de tijd.

Belangrijk tijdens de ontwikkeling van deze wedstrijd was het cross-over denken tussen de domeinen beeldende kunst, design en ambacht. Alle met betrekking tot het materiaal glas, het fysieke beeld ervan of de artistieke connotaties met het begrip. Deze tweede editie verkent de experimentele ontginningsvelden en zet deze af tegen de technische limieten van het productieproces of verkiest mogelijk een conceptuele benadering van het creatieve proces met de filosofische referentie naar dit materiaal. Zo bevat de selectie voor deze tentoonstelling designobjecten, mixedmedia-sculpturen, schilderijen en grafisch werk, fotoprints, video’s en performances, lichtinstallaties en monumentale creaties in situ.

Deze benadering sluit nauw aan bij het ideologische beleid van het GlazenHuis, dat glas wil promoten in al zijn facetten en zich toespitst op alle verschijnings- en gebruiksvormen: glas in het dagelijks gebruik, glas in design, glas door de geschiedenis heen, glas in de toekomst, glas binnen de hedendaagse kunst. Vooral dit laatste - ‘glas als artistiek medium’ een plaats geven binnen het hedendaagse kunstenveld - is een van onze voornaamste doelstellingen.

De International Glass Prize is het antwoord op het verzoek van de Private Stichting Ch. van der Seijs om een geruchtmakende activiteit te ontwikkelen met een internationaal karakter voor het glasmuseum GlazenHuis en de stad Lommel.

De Private Stichting bestendigt hierbij de wens van Charlotte van der Seijs, die tijdens haar leven de functie van het mecenaat voor de kunst waarnam. De mecenas die als beschermvrouwe voor de kunstenaar optreedt zodat deze zich zorgeloos kan wijden aan zijn of haar artistieke oeuvre. Belangrijk in dit initiatief was het principe dat de wedstrijd openstaat voor alle kunstenaars en designers zonder leeftijdsgrens, zowel studenten als professionelen, individuen en collectieven.

Het totale toe te kennen prijzengeld van de tweede editie van de International Glass Prize bedraagt EUR 12.000. Dit wordt door de jury naar eigen verdeelsleutel toegekend aan maximaal drie laureaten. Voor de editie 2015 werden de volgende autoriteiten uitgenodigd om zitting te nemen in de jury: Hans Op de Beeck (internationaal gerenommeerd multidisciplinair kunstenaar), Lut Maris (kunsthistoricus en galeriehoudster), An Moons (adviseur van het Ministerie van Cultuur) en Philip Wiesman (graficus en bestuurslid van de Charlotte van der Seijs Stichting). Zij werden ondersteund door de curatoren van dit concours: Ilse Van Roy en Jeroen Maes.

Naast de geldprijzen zijn er twee werkperiodes in de glasstudio van het GlazenHuis te winnen, waarbij de laureaten vrije toegang hebben tot alle faciliteiten van het atelier alsook een beroep kunnen doen op interne ondersteuning. Dit geeft kunstenaars de mogelijkheid om binnen een nieuwe stimulerende context een experimenteel onderzoek aan te gaan, focussend op het proces. Deze zogenaamde Artist-in-Residence-projecten zijn vandaag de dag belangrijke broedplaatsen geworden voor onderzoek en artistieke ontplooiing. Ze bieden een zinvol antwoord op de groeiende nood van kunstenaars en designers om niet alleen geldelijke bijstand te ontvangen, maar in de eerste plaats ondersteuning te genieten op het vlak van technische expertise, inhoudelijke kennis en de toegang tot specifieke infrastructuren.

Mogelijk nog belangrijker dan het prijzengeld van de International Glass Prize is de financiële tegemoetkoming ter dekking van de kosten voor het vervoer van de geselecteerde werken, dit om alle kunstenaars internationaal de kans te bieden om deel te nemen aan deze wedstrijd en de gekoppelde tentoonstelling. Zo kunnen zij hun zichtbaarheid internationaal verruimen en zich als kunstenaar of ontwerper profileren buiten de directe leef- en werkomgeving.

Het succes van deze strategie blijkt uit het aantal inschrijvingen en het verkeer op sociale media. Na bijna 20.000 websitebezoeken dienden 345 kunstenaars van 45 nationaliteiten online 756 werken in, relaterend aan het thema van deze editie: Het Proces. Verspreid over twee selectieronden nomineerde de jury 51 kunstenaars uit 13 landen, goed voor 61 werken die deel uitmaken van de International Glass Prize Expo.

Multi-disciplinary artist Hans Op de Beeck creates interworlds. Suspended between past and future, fiction and reality, his works sound out a mirage-like contemporary universe and a sensory vertigo where the familiar rubs shoulders with the strange. From installation to sculpture, from video to animated film, from short stories to painting and drawing, from photography to sound material, the media he employs seem to converge on the definition of a topos: a mental theatre that projects the viewer into a reflexive social and cultural experience, the intimate thinking of the human condition.

Lut Maris, fascinated by modern art and ancient cultures ever since childhood, graduated as an art historian and archaeologist and founded art gallery De Mijlpaal (The Milestone) in 1993. Symbolic for the functioning and concept of De Mijlpaal is the high voltage pylon which gives the room a characteristic appearance. From a multidisciplinary vision the work of young artists is displayed along with established values. Their work and body of ideas are shown in dialogue or correlation with other cultures. Guided tours, lectures, discussion evenings, organization of customized concerts or visits to artists’ studios, provide further deepening and reflection. De Mijlpaal, with the ambition of being a milestone in the art landscape, invites to experience and undergo art in a special way. As a curator Lut Maris is involved in various extra muros projects such as ChillidaVerroken, COMBAT Koen Vanmechelen, BLOED in the landcommanderij Alden Biesen (commandery of Alden Biesen) and inGewikkeld in the Clarissenklooster (Convent of Saint Clare) in Hasselt.

Laverend tussen verleden en toekomst, fictie en realiteit tasten zijn werken een zinsbegoochelend hedendaags universum af. Zijn werk is als een zintuigelijke duizeling waarin het vertrouwde en het alledaagse kantelen naar de verwondering en de bevreemding.

Van monumentale installaties tot beeldhouwwerk, van videofilms en fotografie tot animatiefilms, van het schrijven van kortverhalen tot het maken van schilderijen en tekeningen; Op de Beeck zet alle media in om ons een mentaal theater te bieden. Hij biedt reflectieve, sociale en culturele ervaringen als een stille, poëtische weging van ons mens-zijn. (E.Prouteau)

— Lut Maris, van jongsaf aan geboeid door actuele kunst en oude culturen, studeerde af als kunsthistoricus en archeoloog en richtte in 1993 kunstgalerij De Mijlpaal op. Symbool voor de werking en het concept van De Mijlpaal is de hoogspanningspyloon die de ruimte een eigen uitstraling geeft. Vanuit een multidisciplinaire visie worden jonge kunstenaars getoond samen met gevestigde waarden. Hun werk en gedachtegoed wordt getoond in dialoog of in correlatie met andere culturen. Rondleidingen, lezingen, discussieavonden, organisatie van aangepaste concerten of bezoek aan kunstenaars zorgen voor een verdere uitdieping en reflectie. De Mijlpaal, met de ambitie een mijlpaal te zijn in het kunstlandschap, nodigt uit om op een bijzondere manier kunst te ervaren en te beleven. Als curator is Lut Maris betrokken bij

°1946, Utrecht (NL) - www.wiesman.info Philip Wiesman is a member of the Board of Directors of the Charlotte van der Seijs Foundation since it was set up in 2007. Wiesman - born in 1946 in the city of Utrecht - studied there at the academy and took evening classes in Publicity at the same time. Immediately after his training he began etching. Not much later – and not without success - he started exhibiting. His work consists mainly of landscapes and every now and then a townscape.

Currently Wiesman is still being invited to participate in exhibitions and his work is therefore on show regularly throughout the year. Meanwhile his work has been purchased by the Central Museum in Utrecht and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. He is also a member of Pulchri Studio, one of the most renowned artists associations of The Netherlands.

°1977, Bree (BE) An Moons is advisor arts and heritage of the Flemish Minister for Culture, Media, Youth and Brussels, Sven Gatz. In this office she is responsible for visual arts, design, film, museums and heritage, among other things. In 2000, she graduated as a Master in Communication Sciences at the Free University of Brussels. Until 2013 she worked there as an assistant and researcher within the field of media and culture. Ever since her training, An has a passion for art and culture. Until recently she was director of the Media, Arts & Design Faculty (MADfaculty), the University College of Limburg. Previously she also worked part-time for the former Limburg delegate for culture, Gilbert Van Baelen.

— Philip Wiesman is sinds de oprichting van de Stichting Charlotte van der Seijs in 2007 lid van de beheerraad. In 1946 werd Wiesman in de stad Utrecht geboren en heeft aldaar een opleiding gevolgd aan de academie en terzelfder tijd een avondopleiding Publiciteit. Direct na zijn opleiding is hij begonnen met het maken van etsen en niet veel later met het niet zonder succes exposeren daarvan.

Het zijn voornamelijk landschappen en zo nu en dan een stadsgezicht. Ook tegenwoordig wordt Wiesman gevraagd om te komen exposeren, waardoor hij met regelmaat het hele jaar door tentoonstellingen heeft.

Inmiddels hebben het Centraal Museum in Utrecht en Museum Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam werk van hem aangekocht. Ook is hij lid van Pulchri Studio, een van de meest gerenommeerde kunstenaarsverenigingen van Nederland.

Ilse Van Roy has headed the glass studio at the MAD Faculty in Hasselt since 2007, guiding Bachelor and Master fine art students in the use of glass in their artistic oeuvre. By making room for fundamental research, developing crossover projects with other artistic disciplines and setting up international joint ventures, she has helped add depth to this academic course. This is also expressed in her artistic practice; in Flanders she has become one of the leading artists to have used the medium of glass in a contemporary manner and has contributed to its liberation from its traditional craft approach. In so doing, she seeks out the limits of the material and regularly combines it with other media such as photography and video, using them to create space-filling installations.

As artistic coordinator, Jeroen Maes was in 2007 among the founders of the glass centre GlazenHuis in Lommel, Belgium. From a theoretical and practical knowledge of old and new glass, of concept and technique, he made 20 heterogeneous exhibitions, including GlassWear (2008), Tenuous Tenacity (2009), The Taste of Glass (2010), The Glass Canvas (2011) and 3 Solo Shows (2013). Several times he confronted high-quality contemporary art and design with unique historical decorative and utility glass. Between 1997 and 2005, Maes studied historical and contemporary glass at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and at the Institute for Arts and Crafts (IKA) in Mechelen. On the initiative of the Charlotte van der Seijs Foundation Jeroen Maes developed this triennial international competition for glass art and design.

Jeroen Maes stond in 2007 als artistiek coördinator mede aan de wieg van het glascentrum GlazenHuis in Lommel, België. Vanuit een theoretische en praktische kennis van oud en nieuw glas, van concept en techniek stelde hij er 20 heterogene exposities samen, o.a. GlassWear (2008), Tenuous Tenacity (2009), De Smaak van Glas (2010), Het Glascanvas (2011) en 3 Solo Shows (2013). Herhaaldelijk confronteerde hij kwalitatief hoogstaande hedendaagse beeldende kunst en design met uniek historisch decoratief en gebruiksglas. Maes studeerde tussen 1997 en 2005 historisch en hedendaags glas respectievelijk aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten te Antwerpen en aan het Instituut voor Kunst en Ambacht te Mechelen. Ilse Van Roy leidt sinds 2007 de glasstudio aan de Mad-faculty in Hasselt waarbij ze bachelors en masterstudenten in de vrije kunsten begeleidt bij het inzetten van glas in hun artistiek oeuvre. Door plaats te maken voor fundamenteel onderzoek, cross over projecten met andere kunstdisciplines uit te werken en internationale samenwerkingsverbanden op te richten heeft ze de academische opleiding mee helpen verdiepen. Dit vertaalt zich ook in haar artistieke praktijk waarbij ze in Vlaanderen één van de toonaangevende kunstenaars is geworden die op een hedendaagse manier met het medium glas werken en mee heeft bijgedragen om glas te verlossen van haar ambachtelijke benadering. Ze zoekt daarbij de grenzen op van het materiaal en combineert ze regelmatig met andere media zoals fotografie en video waarmee ze ruimte vullende installaties realiseert.

Als freelancer organiseerde Ilse Van Roy in 2012 mee de eerste editie van de International Glass Prize.

The IGP-jury awards a prize to Karen Vermeren for her panoramic glass painting in which she uses the explicit building as a glass carrier. As a contemporary painter Vermeren takes up the challenge to add an extra dimension to the given space in an excellent way. She emphasizes the architectural structures and plays with their illusionistic elements.

The art of painting or the art of glass? Glass and the interaction with its surroundings undoubtedly play an extremely important role. Here Vermeren’s process-based intervention exceeds any definition whatsoever.

— De IGP-jury bekroont Karen Vermeren voor haar panoramische glasschildering waarbij ze het expliciete gebouw als glazen drager gebruikt. Als hedendaags schilder gaat Vermeren op voortreffelijke wijze de uitdaging aan om een extra dimensie toe te voegen aan de gegeven ruimte. Ze benadrukt de architecturale structuren en speelt met de illusionistische elementen ervan.

Schilderkunst of glaskunst? Zonder twijfel speelt glas en de interactie met haar omgeving een uiterst belangrijke rol. Vermeren’s procesmatige interventie overstijgt hier dan ook enige afbakening.

The IGP-jury awards a prize to Simsa Cho with a special appreciation for the works ‘Matoi’ and ‘Matoi 2’. As a glass artist Cho succeeds in developing a continuous evolution in his works that not only produce a technical ingenuity and a unique, formal dynamics but also a substantive tension.

Simsa Cho has a reflective personality and with a refreshing outlook he transforms his perception of spirituality and tradition into a particularly powerful and colourful imagery.

“Surprising and confronting” was the IGP-jury’s opinion on the prize-winning work ‘Stalingrad’ by Jens Gussek. Direct and multi-layered, with a rather subtle reference to the process, and an inconspicuous use of glass.

Gussek deliberately chooses to concentrate all power in the message and in generating successive questions. Stalingrad burns your retina and will then stick in your mind.

— “Onverwacht en confronterend” zo bekroont de IGP-jury het werk ‘Stalingrad’ van Jens Gussek. Direct en gelaagd, met een eerder subtiele verwijzing naar het proces en een on-opzichtelijk gebruik van glas.

Gussek kiest hier bewust om alle kracht te ballen in de boodschap en in het genereren van opeenvolgende vragen. Stalingrad brandt in op je netvlies en blijft vervolgens hangen in je gedachten.

Distorting Beauty 2014 Distorting Beauty is a project challenging us to look at one another and reconsider our visual perception. What is the effect of distorting physical beauty? Idealized physical beauty is the product of culturally defined characteristics, which are consistently evolving and transforming. Can the perception of beauty be disrupted, interrupted, or deconstructed? Is there a sublime quality to beauty that can transcend distortion? What is ugly then?

Distorting Beauty is een project dat ons ertoe uitdaagt om naar elkaar te kijken en onze visuele waarneming te heroverwegen. Wat is het effect van vervormde lichamelijke schoonheid? Geïdealiseerde fysieke schoonheid is het resultaat van cultureel bepaalde kenmerken die voortdurend evolueren en transformeren. Kan het beeld van schoonheid worden verstoord, onderbroken, of gedeconstrueerd?

Is er een verheven kenmerk aan schoonheid dat vervorming kan overstijgen? En wat is dan lelijk?

The Metamorphosis ‘Die Verwandlung’ 2012 By repeatedly heating and reshaping old vases collected over time or inherited from grandparents, Berdych has remoulded them in his own image to satisfy the needs of the contemporary consumer.

Highly demanding craftsmanship and traditional glassmaking techniques are contrasted with contemporary materials such as plastic clips from Hornbach.

Owing to its absurdity, its element of tragicomedy and its humour, the collection has been named after Kafka’s The Metamorphosis: ‘Die Verwandlung’.

Door oude vazen die hij in de loop der tijd verzameld heeft of geërfd van zijn grootouders, steeds weer te verhitten en opnieuw vorm te geven, heeft Berdych ze omgevormd naar zijn eigen idee om aan de behoeften van de hedendaagse consument te voldoen. Veeleisend vakmanschap en traditionele technieken worden naast materialen van nu gelegd, zoals plastic clips van Hornbach. Door de ongerijmdheid ervan, het tragikomische element en de humor, is de collectie vernoemd naar De Gedaanteverwisseling van Kafka: ‘Die Verwandlung’.

Looking for My True North 2014-15 Not far from the former Danish trading post, Trankebar, in India, I went to Naadi Astrologers to find my palm leaf and have my past, present and future life unfolded. Naadi mostly talks about things like getting a job, construction of a house, marriage, curing of a disease etc. It is very ‘hands on’ in foreseeing the future, and seemed surprisingly rational in contrast to the outside chaos. This piece is about conflicting feelings of skepticism and excitement of knowing and wanting to believe.

Niet ver van de voormalige Deense handelspost, Trankebar, in India, ging ik naar de Naadi Astrologen om mijn palmblad te vinden en me mijn verleden, heden en toekomst te laten openbaren. Naadi praat vooral over zaken als het krijgen van een baan, het bouwen van een huis, het huwelijk, het genezen van een ziekte, etc. Het is erg ‘praktisch’ gericht in het voorspellen van de toekomst en het leek verrassend rationeel in tegenstelling tot de chaos buiten. Dit stuk gaat over tegenstrijdige gevoelens van scepsis en de opwinding van het weten en het willen geloven.

Het onderwerp van mijn sculptuur gaat niet alleen over geloof en godsdienst. Omdat Maria er is... voor iedereen. Ze is overal en we zouden Maria kunnen zien... Ze is ook een symbool van cultus en consumptie, daarom zouden we haar kunnen kopen als prullig souvenir en kan iedereen een beetje van Maria bij zich dragen... Dus, Maria kan bij iedereen zijn en ook bij mij...

Spiegelingen (Performance, video installation.

Site-specific work in the GlazenHuis in Lommel and in the neighbouring restaurant ‘Kasseria Eethuis’)

2015 Windows do not only admit light into the architecture, they also provide a view out. By copying parts of the landscape on the window the view is brought inside and you will therefore become more aware of what you see. The drawings conceal and reveal the view. The work is about seeing and being seen.

‘Reflections’ is an animated drawing on the windows of the GlazenHuis and the windows of the neighbours. The actions on the window of the restaurant ‘Kasseria’ are then being converted to video images showing gaps and holes in reality in a surprising way. Boogaerts takes pictures of it at different times of the day and by doing so, she lets light and time enter into the work. She wipes parts away and paints new parts, thus creating animated scenes and actions. In the exhibition you can compare both screens: the video on the monitor and site-specific animated drawing on the windows of the GlazenHuis.

They enter into a dialogue.

The Eethuis Kasseria and the GlazenHuis are two separate worlds that coexist, they are blind spots for each other. ‘How is the museum embedded in its environment?’ and ‘How do you look at your neighbours?’ In dialogue with both of them it is determined what will be depicted on the windows.

Vensters brengen niet enkel licht binnen in de architectuur, ze zorgen ook voor een uitzicht. Door delen van het landschap over te nemen op het venster wordt het uitzicht naar binnen gehaald en daardoor kijk je er bewuster naar. De tekeningen verhullen en onthullen het zicht. Het werk gaat over kijken en bekeken worden.

‘Spiegelingen’ bestaat uit een tekening in animatie op de vensters van het GlazenHuis en op de vensters van de buren. De acties op het venster van het Eethuis Kasseria worden vervolgens omgezet naar videobeelden die op een verrassende wijze tussenruimten en gaten in de realiteit tonen.

Boogaerts neemt er foto’s van op verschillende tijdstippen van de dag en laat zo licht en tijd een rol spelen in het werk. Ze veegt stukken weg en schildert bij en creëert zo bewegende taferelen en acties. In de tentoonstelling kan je beide schermen vergelijken: de video op de monitor en site-specifieke tekening in animatie op de vensters van het GlazenHuis. Ze gaan een dialoog aan.

Het Eethuis Kasseria en het GlazenHuis zijn twee aparte werelden die naast elkaar bestaan, ze vormen blinde vlekken voor elkaar. ‘Hoe is het museum ingebed in zijn omgeving?’ en ‘Hoe kijk je naar je buren?’

In samenspraak met beide werd bepaald wat er op de vensters wordt afgebeeld.

I was interested in a relationship between Posture and Energy (Aura). I am submitting 3 works which develop in the process.

This piece illustrates a yoga posture which brings both legs in the air and supports your body with neck, shoulder & elbows. When you do this, it feels like all your organs will drop to your face. It is uncomfortable and shocking for people with a big tummy. However, a good thing is that I realized the usefulness of my Navel. Since I came out of my mother I forgot about what is good about my Navel. Talking about energy & spirit, it came back and it is quite useful.

Ik was geïnteresseerd in een relatie tussen Houding en Energie (Aura). Ik lever 3 werken in die zich ontwikkelen in het proces.

Matoi 2014 The Japanese word ‘Matou’ means ‘to wear’. A same word ‘Matoi’ is the name of a flag for firefighters in the Edo period, which a man carried to the top of roof who spinned it up & down to show which group of firefighters was working and to bring other firefighters’ spirit up for working. It is highly dangerous and it is heavy stuff. Why do they do that?

Working on this piece my questions to ‘Matoi’ and Aura cross over.

Dit stuk illustreert een yogahouding waarbij men beide benen in de lucht brengt en het lichaam ondersteunt met nek, schouders en ellebogen. Als je dit doet, voelt het alsof al je organen naar je gezicht zakken. Het is ongemakkelijk en choquerend voor mensen met een dikke buik. Het goede hieraan was echter dat ik mij bewust werd van het nut van mijn Navel. Sinds ik uit mijn moeder kwam, vergat ik dat. Pratend over energie en geest kwam het terug en hij is heel nuttig.

Het Japanse woord ‘Matou’ betekent ‘dragen’.

Eenzelfde woord ‘Matoi’ is de naam van een vlag voor brandweerlieden in de Edo-periode, die door een man naar de nok van het dak werd gedragen en daar op en neer gezwaaid werd om te laten zien welke groep brandweerlieden aan het werk was en om andere brandweerlieden de moed te geven om door te gaan.

Het is zeer gevaarlijk en zwaar werk. Waarom doen ze het? Werkend aan dit stuk kruisen mijn vragen over ‘Matoi’ en Aura elkaar.

Arabic glass 2014 My aim in creating the series of Arabic glass (especially in a vase form), by combining porcelain and glass, is deeply inspired by the history of the materials in Western and Eastern cultures, including the history of European (or Western) imperialism and the influence of the colonial legacy on the development of globalised culture. By using the Arabic word ‘Halal’, I want to challenge the individual’s projected expectation of another culture (derived from cultural stereotypes).

Mijn doel bij het creëren van de serie Arabisch glas (vooral in vaasvorm) door het combineren van porselein en glas, is zeer geïnspireerd door de geschiedenis van de materialen in westerse en oosterse culturen, met inbegrip van de geschiedenis van het Europese (of westerse) imperialisme en de invloed van de koloniale erfenis op de ontwikkeling van de geglobaliseerde cultuur. Door het gebruik van het Arabische woord ‘Halal’ wil ik de verwachting op de proef stellen die het individu projecteert op een andere cultuur (verkregen uit culturele stereotypen).

Mask 2014 With ‘Mask’ I wanted to go bigger. Also inspired by the bottles with a handle I made a mould of the biggest bottle I could find (within the size of the ovens). My goal was making a mask that doesn’t just stay an object but becomes a sculpture. By going this big you lose even more the control over the process, the blowing becomes intenser and harder, the mould needs to open more before pressing it back down. And by using the gas burner at the end, it creates some spots that give a metallic touch to it.

Met ‘Mask’ wilde ik groter werken. Mede geïnspireerd door flessen met een handvat maakte ik een mal van de grootste fles die ik kon vinden (binnen de grootte van de ovens). Mijn doel was het maken van een masker dat niet gewoon een object zou blijven, maar een sculptuur zou worden. Op deze manier verlies je nog meer de controle over het proces, het blazen wordt intenser en moeilijker, de mal moet nog wijder open voordat je hem terugduwt. En door de gasbrander te gebruiken aan het eind ontstaan een paar vlekken die het iets metaalachtigs geven.

Pure Interaction 2013 Normally a glassblower takes the lead and controls what happens to glass. Here I have removed the glassblower and left it to the interaction of a mushroom with hot glass to determine the outcome: the moisture from the mushroom causes the glass to expand and the heat of the glass affects the shape.

As the glass cools, it seems to become a static object, but constant pressure from the steam of the mushroom gives tension to the object and the glass finally explodes.

Normaal gesproken neemt een glasblazer de leiding en bepaalt wat er gebeurt met glas. Hier was er geen glasblazer bij en liet ik het aan de interactie van een champignon met het hete glas over om de uitkomst te bepalen: het vocht van de champignon zorgt ervoor dat het glas uitzet en de hitte van het glas beïnvloedt de vorm. Naarmate het glas afkoelt, lijkt het een statisch object worden, maar de constante druk van de stoom van de champignon geeft spanning aan het object en het glas spat uiteindelijk uit elkaar.

High Seat 2014 This light object is inspired by my favourite place. I associate this place with my childhood and my memories of the walks with my father, who devotes himself to gamekeeping. I like the view of the landscape from the high seat. It is an idyllic place in nature for me. With the aid of a light source, the glass object is lit and portrayed on the wall in different that is in a larger scale. In this way I wanted to create a picture that would carry the character and atmosphere of the place.

Dit lichtobject wordt geïnspireerd door mijn favoriete plek. Ik associeer deze plek met mijn kindertijd en mijn herinneringen aan de wandelingen met mijn vader, die zich wijdt aan wildbeheer. Ik houd van het uitzicht over het landschap vanaf de hoogzit. Het is voor mij een idyllische plek in de natuur. Met behulp van een lichtbron wordt het glazen object verlicht en afgebeeld op de muur, maar dan in groot formaat. Op deze manier wilde ik een beeld creëren dat het karakter en de sfeer van de plaats zou overbrengen.

Glass Tower Installation: The Fall / The Field 2015

Onika 2014 Bandanas, stuffed condoms, pearls, chains, hairweave, beads, denture-rejected teeth, paint, latex, masturbatory grade silicone, costume jewelry, crystals, glass eyes, zit-coloured cabochons, and tampons. These materials populate the interior and exterior surfaces of my sculptural objects, blown ultra-thin glass membranes, fragile visceral tissues resembling tumor forms. Combining elements of the grotesque and the beautiful, the hot glass forms are bulbous, seeping, colourful, transparent, and organic.

The Fall / The Field illustrates Luke’s account of the moment Judas’ innards were released and spilled from his decomposed hanging body. The glass captures and re-creates the glistening wetness that reflected from the organ pile in the sunny field.

Placed in the glass tower and piled together, the organic glass forms transmit different hues of reds, pinks, and magentas. Hanging from the top of the tower, a large chandelier casts rainbow prisms and flecks of light onto the flesh like forms. While depicting such a very gruesome event, the glass allows and encourages us to find beauty and poetic qualities of such happenings or horrors.

Bandana’s, opgevulde condooms, parels, kettingen, geweven haar, kralen, tanden uit een kunstgebit, verf, latex, masturbatiesilicone, sieraden, kristallen, glazen ogen, puistkleurige cabochons en tampons.

Deze materialen bevolken de binnen- en de buitenkant van mijn sculpturale objecten, geblazen ultradunne glasmembranen, breekbare viscerale weefsels die op tumorvormen lijken. De vormen van heet glas zijn bolvormig, weglekkend, kleurrijk, transparant en organisch, en combineren zo elementen van het groteske en het fraaie.

The Fall / The Field illustreert het verhaal van Lucas over het moment waarop de ingewanden van Judas naar buiten kwamen en uit zijn ontbindende hangende lichaam stroomden. Het glas vangt en herschept de glinsterende natheid die werd weerkaatst door de stapel ingewanden in het zonnige veld.

Geplaatst in de glazen toren en op elkaar gestapeld, laten de organische glazen vormen verschillende tinten rood, roze en magenta door. Een grote kroonluchter die in de torenpunt hangt , werpt regenboogprisma’s en lichtvlekken op de vleesachtige vormen. Het glas schildert zo’n zeer gruwelijke gebeurtenis, maar maakt het ons tegelijkertijd mogelijk en stimuleert ons om de schoonheid en poëtische kwaliteiten van dergelijke gebeurtenissen of verschrikkingen te vinden.

Stalingrad 2014 I saw a young couple kissing in front of the sign ‘Stalingrad’ in a metro station in Paris. I am a German, so immediately there was a question in my mind: “Can you do that?”. Stalingrad still exists in books and in the collective memory. But you can’t find Stalingrad on any map of Russia anymore.

Stalingrad is in Paris now, as blue-white signs in a metro station. And there is no blood. Hopefully.

Ik zag een jong stel dat elkaar kuste pal voor het bord ‘Stalingrad’ in een metrostation in Parijs. Ik ben Duitser, dus meteen diende zich bij mij de vraag aan: “Kun je dat wel doen?”. In boeken bestaat Stalingrad nog steeds en in het collectieve geheugen. Maar je kunt Stalingrad op geen enkele kaart van Rusland meer vinden. Mirror 2013 The Mirror was created as a response to the oversaturation of visual stimuli. The omnipresence of artificial images affects our perception of the world. The project is based on a mechanical billboard, but instead of an advertising image it is covered with mirrors, which creates a minimalist mobile installation. Instead of presenting manipulative information the work turns the viewer’s attention back to reality. But even this view, however, is not the true one.

The Mirror werd gemaakt als een reactie op de oververzadiging aan visuele prikkels. De alomtegenwoordigheid van artificiële beelden beïnvloedt ons zicht op de wereld. Het project is gebaseerd op een automatisch billboard, maar het is niet met een reclamebeeld bedekt maar met spiegels die een minimalistische mobiele installatie creëren. In plaats van manipulatieve informatie te presenteren draait het werk de aandacht van de kijker terug naar de werkelijkheid. Maar zelfs deze kijk is nochtans niet waarheidsgetrouw.

Miscellaneous 2013 Two digital photographs of Janssens throwing some of the powder in the air and taking the photographs both in light and dark situations to demonstrate the material’s ability to shine. There is a sense of play to seduce you to the aspects of each of the additional works. The photographs are a description of the ‘Untitled’ (powder) ‘sampled’ from the original work which captures an additional part of its possibilities.

Twee digitale foto’s van Janssens die iets van het poeder in de lucht gooit en de foto’s zowel in lichte als in donkere situaties maakt om aan te tonen dat het materiaal kan schitteren. Het is een soort spel om je te verlokken naar de aspecten van elk van de aanvullende werken. De foto's zijn een beschrijving van de ‘Untitled’ (poeder) ‘bemonsterd’ van het originele werk waardoor een extra deel van zijn mogelijkheden wordt vastgelegd.

Transfer 2014 I create a collection of works inspired by my dreams and nightmares. Mysterious processes occurring in our subconscious create new absurd worlds. Images which we know from reality are deformed, transformed, brutalized. In my creative process there is first a need, an idea and then I move it to the material. Form corresponds with the contents. The creative process is also a way of autotherapy. Lost wax technique allows me to show organicity, the process of decay and variability of matter.

Ik maak een collectie werken die geïnspireerd zijn door mijn dromen en mijn nachtmerries.

Geheimzinnige processen die zich voordoen in ons onderbewustzijn scheppen nieuwe, absurde werelden. Beelden die we kennen uit de werkelijkheid zijn vervormd, getransformeerd, mishandeld. In mijn creatieve proces is er eerst een behoefte, een idee, en vervolgens verplaats ik het naar het materiaal.

Vorm komt overeen met de inhoud. Het creatieve proces is ook een manier van zelftherapie. Met de verloren-wastechniek kan ik organiciteit bereiken, het proces van verval en veranderlijkheid van de materie.

Hoffnungsglück 2014 Drawing the eye into a remote and silent realm, a mist of delicate white, grey and golden tones suggests pictures of drifting clouds or lucent pearls of dew. As in water molecules, light is refracted by numberless shards of mouth-blown glass. The surface of the mosaic allows light to penetrate, creating a second plane of projection on the wall behind while animated by fluctuating daylight. In its formal reduction, one can sense the potency and depth of a tradition that is thousands of years old.

Terwijl de blik naar een verre en stille wereld wordt getrokken, doet een waas van subtiele witte, grijze en gouden tinten denken aan foto’s van drijvende wolken of doorzichtige parels van dauw.

Net als in watermoleculen wordt het licht gebroken door talloze stukjes mondgeblazen glas. Het oppervlak van het mozaïek laat het licht doordringen en schept zo een tweede projectievlak op de muur daarachter, terwijl het wordt bezield door veranderend daglicht. In zijn uiterlijke verkleining kan men de potentie en de diepte voelen van een traditie van duizenden jaren oud.

De sculptuur wordt op afstand geduwd: hij verliest zijn directheid, omdat het verwijzen van piepschuim naar een alledaagse situatie een integraal onderdeel is. Het feit dat deze sculptuur van glas is gemaakt, verhoogt het auratische karakter van het werk. Belangrijk is niet alleen het materiaal zelf, maar ook de presentatie. In dit specifieke geval het installeren van de panelen in de ruimte. Door hun rangschikking wordt de ruimte bepaald. Het werk wordt groter op grond van zijn voorstellingswereld, het wekt een gevoel van sublimiteit op die de banaliteit opheft van de veel voorkomende artikelen van piepschuim waarop het werk is geïnspireerd.

The change of materiality of Styrofoam to glass is, for the assessment of the sculptural art work at hand, of fundamental importance. The direct material properties change: the soft becomes hard, the lightweight heavy. When glass shatters, it produces sharp edges, in contrast to polystyrene, which is composed of soft globules. Furthermore, the aspect of valence is important. Glass is expensive and considered noble, Styrofoam however is cheap, available and dull. Through transformation of materiality a shift in meaning takes place.

The sculpture is pushed into a distance; it loses its immediacy, Styrofoam’s reference to an everyday situation being an integral part. Made out of glass however, an increase of the work’s auratic character takes place. Important is not only the material itself, but also the presentation. In this particular case the installation of the panels in the room. Through their serialization, the space is being defined. The work is extended based on its imagery, it generates a feeling of sublimeness, which cancels the banality of the commonly encountered Styrofoam articles the work is inspired by.

The plate’s graphic design portrays the appearance of Styrofoam instead the one of glass. The traces tell the story of each plate, each one reaching an end-point through the glass’ solidification.

De verandering van de materialiteit van piepschuim ten opzichte van glas is, voor de beoordeling van het sculpturale kunstwerk hier, van fundamenteel belang. De directe materiële eigenschappen veranderen: het zachte wordt hard, lichtgewicht wordt zwaar.

Wanneer glas splintert, levert dat scherpe randen op, in tegenstelling tot polystyreen dat bestaat uit zachte bolletjes. Bovendien is het aspect van valentie belangrijk. Glas is duur en wordt beschouwd als edel, piepschuim is echter goedkoop, beschikbaar en saai.

Door middel van omzetting van materialiteit vindt er een verschuiving in betekenis plaats.

Strange Weather Revised 2014 Easy Living. The title relates to an essential part of modern life, which is about the process of accumulating stuff and how to deal with the de-manifesting of objects. By literally destroying old pieces with a hammer and assembling fragments anew, I have allowed what was to become more. It is a paraphrase over the notion of aimed peace and harmony by the process of cleaning up all that makes up a thing: intentionality, passing of time, sensations, relations.

De titel heeft betrekking op een essentieel deel van het moderne leven, dat over het proces gaat van het vergaren van spullen en over hoe om te gaan met het de-manifesterende van objecten. Door het letterlijk met een hamer vernietigen van oude stukken en het opnieuw samenvoegen van de brokstukken, heb ik toegelaten wat meer moest worden. Het is een parafrase op het idee dat wij vrede en harmonie nastreven door het proces van het opruimen van alles dat een ding vormt: intentionaliteit, het voorbijgaan van de tijd, gevoelens, relaties.

Potential 2014 This piece is a product of my interest in the idea of potential energy. Potential energy refers to the stored energy that an object has when put on a shelf, or that an arrow has when drawn back in a bow. I am attracted to the simple aesthetic of this object combined with the tension that it produces. It poses the question “Potential for what?”.

Potentiële energie betreft de opgeslagen energie die een voorwerp heeft wanneer het op een plank gezet wordt, of die een pijl heeft wanneer hij naar achteren wordt getrokken in een boog. Mij boeit de eenvoudige esthetiek van dit object in combinatie met de spanning die het voortbrengt. Het stelt de vraag: “Potentieel waarvoor?”.

Sinew II 2014 Dealing with narratives relating to my fascination with physical vulnerabilities of the internal body. I respond to bone-like ceramic fragments and edges, employing a 3D scanner and MicroScribe digitizer to create 3D pathways that unite ceramic fragments in a new composition. The resulting CAD mould is printed using a 3D digital printer; a process known as Rapid Tooling that removes the need for a physical pattern. Cast and sheet glass are assembled to create a fragile, yet threatening composition.

Ik houd me bezig met verhalen die te maken hebben met mijn fascinatie voor de fysieke zwakheden van ons binnenste. Ik speel in op botachtige keramische delen en randen en gebruik daarbij een 3D-scanner en MicroScribe digitizer om 3D-banen te creëren die keramische delen in een nieuw geheel samenbrengen. De CAD-mal die hiervan het resultaat is, wordt afgedrukt met een digitale 3D-printer: een proces dat bekend staat als Rapid Tooling, dat de behoefte aan een fysiek patroon wegneemt. Gegoten- en vlakglas worden samengevoegd om een breekbare, maar toch dreigend uitziende compositie te maken.

Verwondering 2014

Als Dan Holsbeek in ‘De universaliteit van het proces’ schrijft dat het scheppingsproces geen eenmalig gebeuren is maar een continu ‘worden’, kan ik me hier zeker in terugvinden. Zo zie je bijvoorbeeld bij een boom duidelijk dit groeiproces weerspiegeld in zijn jaarringen. Ook naar het leven van de mens kan je dit proces doortrekken. Mijn werk Verwondering verwijst naar de eerste confrontatie met complexe processen en hun resultaten. Als baby kijken we om ons heen en staan verwonderd over de wereld. We nemen alles in ons op, zien, horen, ruiken, proeven en tasten. Onze zintuigen worden geprikkeld om waar te nemen. We dienen alleen maar te ‘zijn’. In een volgend stadium worden we nieuwsgierig en gaan op ontdekkingstocht. We bestuderen en ontleden, ontdekken eigenschappen van materie en leggen die vast. Kennis vergaren wordt wetenschap. Nog later gaat de mens met deze wetenschap aan de slag. Ik citeer opnieuw Dan Holsbeek: “De mens poogt van zijn omgeving een habitat op zijn maat te maken, dat is cultiveren... de creatie van een ‘voor hem’ leefbare omgeving, door functionaliteit, comfort, schoonheid. etc.”

When Dan Holsbeek writes in ‘The universality of the process’ that the creative process is not a once-in-a-lifetime event but a continuous ‘becoming’, I can certainly relate to that. With a tree, for instance, you clearly see this growth reflected in its annual rings. You can pursue this process further to the life of man, too. My work Verwondering (Amazement) refers to the first confrontation with complex processes and their results. When we are a baby, we look around us and are amazed at the world. We absorb everything, see, hear, smell, taste and touch.

Our senses are stimulated to observe. We need just ‘be’. In the next stage we become curious and are going to explore. We study and analyze, discover the properties of matter and establish these. Acquiring knowledge becomes science. Even later, man sets to work with this knowledge. I quote Dan Holsbeeck again: “Man attempts to make his environment tailor-made to suit himself, which is cultivating… the creation of an environment that is ‘livable’ for him, through functionality, comfort, beauty etc.”

Atlas 2012 The way a breaking force is applied has a significant influence on the cracking patterns. Born through destruction these shapes give the previously flat sheet dimension and depth. These pieces are produced, by placing a small object, under the glass before applying force. The presentation frames the aesthetic of destruction and places emphasis on its transformative possibilities, mapping crystalline landscapes of selective and careful violence.

De manier waarop een brekende kracht wordt uitgeoefend heeft een belangrijke invloed op het patroon van de scheuren. Deze vormen - ontstaan door vernieling - verlenen de eerder vlakke plaat dimensie en diepte. Deze stukken worden gemaakt, door het plaatsen van een klein voorwerp, onder het glas voordat kracht wordt uitgeoefend. De presentatie geeft vorm aan de esthetiek van vernieling en benadrukt de herscheppende mogelijkheden ervan, als het kristallen landschappen van selectief en zorgvuldig geweld in kaart brengt.

Light Cube 2012 Space and glass become means of communication, light symbolises the basic element of life, and the entire oeuvre is pervaded by the essential unity of man and space. It gradually reveals situations that we recognise from everyday life.

They belong among our sensory perceptions, the rhythms of life such as breathing, the heartbeat, processes in the brain, storage in the memory, recollections and the need to preserve feelings, ideas and perceptions.

Ruimte en glas worden communicatiemiddelen, licht symboliseert het basiselement van het leven en het hele werk is doordrongen van het wezenlijke samenstel van mens en ruimte. Het onthult geleidelijk aan situaties die we herkennen uit het dagelijks leven. Ze behoren bij onze zintuiglijke waarnemingen, de ritmes van het leven zoals ademhaling, hartslag, processen in de hersenen, geheugenopslag, herinneringen en de noodzaak om gevoelens, ideeën en observaties te bewaren.

Everyone needs own window 2012 Objects that are no longer in use undergo a distinctive transition and if not recycled, they end up as trash. Windows from abandoned houses were the perfect material for this artistic revaluation: In use they function as a membrane between the intimate and public life, out of use, covered with dust, broken to pieces, they become symbols for abandonment and dysfunction. This composition uses window hinges anchored in heterogeneous groups that resemble furniture.

Objecten die niet meer in gebruik zijn, ondergaan een karakteristieke transitie en als zij niet gerecycled worden, eindigen ze als vuilnis. Ramen uit verlaten huizen waren het ideale materiaal voor deze artistieke herwaardering: als ze in gebruik zijn, functioneren ze als een membraan tussen het strikt persoonlijke en het openbare leven, als ze niet meer gebruikt worden, worden ze - bedekt met stof, in stukken gebroken - symbool voor verlating en dysfunctie. Proper Properties 2014 A great relationship is about two things: First, appreciating the similarities, and second, respecting the differences. Respectful combination of two materials based on their common properties: melting point, shrinkage and durability. Set of glass trays blown in a metal mould that shapes the glass and later becomes part of the product serving as a handle. No glue or any other fixing needed.

Een heel goede relatie gaat over twee dingen: ten eerste, het waarderen van de overeenkomsten, en ten tweede, het respect hebben voor de verschillen. Een respectvolle combinatie van twee materialen op basis van hun gemeenschappelijke eigenschappen: smeltpunt, krimp en duurzaamheid.

Elevated Nation 2014 This work originated in an artist residency at the CEAC in Xiamen, China. There is a strong identification with the (local) nature in China, which is expressed in various ways and can be found in all levels of society. Bamboo is traditionally used in construction. One can still see buildings surrounded by long rods of bamboo, serving as scaffolding material. In Elevated Nation I reflect on the transience of a culture, which keeps growing and is constantly on the verge of collapse.

Dit werk is ontstaan tijdens een periode als artist-in-residence aan de CEAC in Xiamen, China.

Er is een sterke identificatie met de (lokale) natuur in China, die op verschillende manieren wordt uitgedrukt en te vinden is in alle lagen van de maatschappij. Bamboe wordt van oudsher gebruikt in de bouw. Men ziet nog steeds gebouwen die worden omgeven door lange stokken van bamboe die als steigermateriaal dienen. Glass Springs 2012 My latest two bodies of work are about exploiting glass in a surrealist sense that invites the viewers to question the material and what they are seeing. This Glass Spring process was developed when a decorative technique I was working on went wrong and for a split sec saw a glass spring bounce across the floor. That was the so-called aha reaction I had which led me to developing a process to successfully creating glass springs that can bend, twist, & stretch, pushing the materials to their max limit.

Mijn laatste twee werken gaan over het gebruik van glas in surrealistische zin, dat de kijkers uitnodigt om het materiaal en wat ze zien te onderzoeken. Dit Glass Spring-proces werd ontwikkeld toen een decoratieve techniek waar ik mee bezig was, mis ging en ik een fractie van een seconde lang een veer van glas over de vloer zag stuiteren. Het was de zogenaamde aha-erlebnis die ik had die mij ertoe bracht een proces te ontwikkelen om met succes glazen veren te maken die kunnen buigen, draaien en rekken, waarbij het materiaal tot de uiterste grens wordt gedreven. — Materials: hot formed glass Dimensions: 9 cm x 9 cm x 9 cm (20-30 cm streched ) Photo credit: Leana Quade

Light Vortex 2014 My fascination with the way light passes through glass informs my work. I exploit its transparency, as its essential and primary quality, manipulating and distorting both colour and form in order to challenge my viewer’s perceptions.

The refractive qualities of glass, in my sculptures, create optical effects and shadows that transform their environment creating an architecture of light and colour. The use of light to effectively mix colours is now a main aspect of my work.

Mijn fascinatie voor de manier waarop licht door glas gaat, bezielt mijn werk. Ik benut de transparantie ervan, als zijn wezenlijke en voornaamste kenmerk, door zowel kleur als vorm te manipuleren en te vervormen om de waarneming van mijn toeschouwer te prikkelen. De refractieve eigenschappen van glas brengen, in mijn sculpturen, optische effecten en schaduwen tot stand die hun omgeving herscheppen door een bouwwerk van licht en kleur te creëren. Het gebruik van licht om kleuren effectief te mengen, is nu een zeer belangrijk aspect van mijn werk.

Repetition N°7/123 of infinite 2014 To be able to understand a glass object consisting of two glass bubbles and the Gestalt of these pieces, I grind it. Almost like an autopsy I trace their cross-sections with colour prints on paper. This I do until it is physically gone. Dust, colour, adhesive and a pile of paper stay. The object has dramatically changed its physicality during this grinding process.

This is a process of construction, deconstruction and reconstruction and of destroying and making, thinking and understanding.

Om een glazen object te kunnen begrijpen dat bestaat uit twee glazen bollen en de Gestalt van deze stukken, slijp ik het. Bijna als een autopsie volg ik hun dwarsdoorsneden met kleurafdrukken op papier.

Dit doe ik tot het fysiek is verdwenen. Stof, kleur, lijm en een stapel papier blijven. Het object heeft zijn fysicaliteit spectaculair veranderd tijdens dit slijpproces. Dit is een proces van constructie, deconstructie en reconstructie en van het vernietigen en het maken, denken en begrijpen.

Timeline 2012 In the two-part work Timeline video recordings of a forest landscape are digitally processed by altering still images, changing and layering transparency and composing a new film using an image-editing program. Throughout the time line of the video, the images are being compressed into a bizarre structure. Simultaneously, a wall piece shows images of the stills, which have been engraved on separate glass sheets, translating the time line into space.

In het tweedelige werk Timeline zijn videoopnamen van een boslandschap digitaal bewerkt door het veranderen van stilstaande beelden, het wisselen en in lagen aanbrengen van transparantie en het samenstellen van een nieuwe film met behulp van een beeldbewerkingsprogramma. Gedurende de tijdlijn van de video worden de beelden gecomprimeerd tot een excentriek bouwsel.

Tegelijkertijd toont een stuk aan de muur beelden van de filmfoto’s die zijn gegraveerd op aparte glasplaten, die zo de tijdlijn in ruimte omvormen.

Homam 2014 Themes of form, colour, light and symmetry underpin this piece. Using the most fundamental geometric shape, the circle, the piece is built up by repeating this shape in multiple ways to create a whole that is both simple in concept yet intrinsically complex to create. Colour is introduced to the piece by way of the insert which transmits its colour into and through the main body (which is clear glass) by means of light.

Thema’s van vorm, kleur, licht en symmetrie onderbouwen dit stuk. Door het gebruik van de meest fundamentele geometrische vorm, de cirkel, is het stuk opgebouwd door het op diverse manieren herhalen van deze vorm om zo een geheel te creëren dat zowel eenvoudig van concept is als toch intrinsiek complex om te maken. Door middel van licht wordt kleur ingebracht in het stuk via het inzetstuk dat zijn kleur overbrengt in en door het centrale deel (dat helder glas is).

Almost Middle C 2013 2013

Een piano met één toets werd vervaardigd door alle stukken van een 103 jaar oude staande piano weg te hakken, met uitzondering van één enkele toets en het apparaat dat een snaar raakt wanneer de toets wordt aangeslagen. Een wijnglas, met de hand gemaakt om te resoneren in de buurt van de frequentie van de eengestreepte C, bungelt aan de drie snaren die vroeger de noot hebben voortgebracht. In het midden van een pianotoetsenbord raakt een toets, wanneer deze wordt aangeslagen, drie snaren om één enkele noot voort te brengen. Eén snaar is enigszins te laag, en een ander is enigszins te hoog. De combinatie van deze drie onvolmaakte toonhoogtes is schijnbaar aangenamer voor het oor dan één enkele perfecte noot. Het handgemaakte wijnglas dat de drie snaren in het instrument vervangt, is gemaakt om zo dicht mogelijk in de buurt van een perfecte eengestreepte C te klinken bij het volbrengen van de vorming ervan. Ik maakte een kopie van een 17e-eeuwse relikwieënschrijn (zie afbeelding hieronder) om alle rommel in op te bergen vanonder het toetsenbord van de piano die 103 jaar lang bespeeld was.

A one-note piano was made by cutting away every part of a 103 year old upright grand piano except for a single key and the apparatus that hits a string when the note is pressed. A wine glass, handmade to resonate close to the frequency of middle C, dangles from the three strings that used to produce the note. At the middle of a piano keyboard, when a key is pressed it hits three strings to make a single note. One string is slightly flat, and another is slightly sharp. The combination of these three imperfect pitches is supposedly more pleasing to the ear than a single, perfect note. The hand-made wine glass replacing the three strings in the instrument was made to resonate as closely as possible to a perfect middle C in the performance of its creation. I made a copy of a 17th-century reliquary (see image below) to contain all of the debris under the keyboard of the piano that had been played for 103 years.

5,5 km 2014 The title of my work relates to the distance it took me to create the surface and partially the shape. Instead of taking the very careful and conscious way to coldwork the glass with all machineries and tools I went for a walk and just rolled or kicked the piece over the ground. I was very curious to see what comes out in the end and which ground leaves the best structures behind. There is no real technique to control the process other than more or less carefully kicking it with the foot and some time.

De titel van mijn werk heeft betrekking op de afstand die het mij kostte om het oppervlak en voor een deel de vorm te maken. In plaats van te kiezen voor de zeer zorgvuldige en bewuste manier om het glas met alle machines en gereedschappen koud te bewerken, ging ik wandelen en rolde of schopte ik gewoon het stuk over de grond. Ik was erg benieuwd om te zien wat daar uiteindelijk uitkomt en welke ondergrond de beste structuren achterlaat. Er is geen echte techniek om het proces te controleren anders dan om min of meer nauwkeurig te schoppen.

Transparency (No.1-No.3) 2013 The exploration of this project is the discipline of how I perceive the transparency of glass as a material through the process of layering. I blew super-thin glasses at 50 to more than 70 times into a plaster mould in a kiln until the mould was filled.

Untitled I / Untitled II 2012 The creative process here explores the tension between constraint and freedom. Objects are selected – here a series of stainless steel buckets that provide a boundary; something to contain and constrain. Then the object is altered to try and expand or even explode that boundary. The process of creation plays with the shared characteristics of glass and more fluid materials to bring concept and making together.

Het creatieve proces verkent hier de spanning tussen dwang en vrijheid. Objecten worden geselecteerd - hier een serie emmers van roestvrij staal die een grens bepalen: iets om te bevatten en in te sluiten. Vervolgens wordt het object gewijzigd om te trachten die grens uit te breiden of zelfs te vernietigen. Het proces van het creëren speelt met de gemeenschappelijke kenmerken van glas en meer vloeiende materialen om concept en maakproces samen te brengen.

GLASS...#1 2013 GLASS...#1 investigates glass as a cultural phenomenon and part of a movie speech. The only glass physically present is the TV screen which is a crucial theme of my work - an invisible border separating reality and fiction. With this piece I’m trying to blur this border.

My series of fused glass rope pieces crossbreeds new glass forming techniques with ancient practices of rigging, net-weaving and binding.

Glass rope is hand wound and then tensioned over geometric scaffolds. Complex three dimensional patterns arise from knotted intersecting lines and fine details are preserved by the careful manipulation of the fusing process.

The inflatables series is work that I have been exploring for several years. In brief, it can be described as fused and inflated sheet glass. The compelling aspect of the process is its similarity to the manner in which certain types of forms are created by natural circumstances. The simple flat geometric fusings are transformed by interior pressure and material behavior into complexly curving tension structures reminiscent of microscopic life, seedpods, flower buds, and soap bubbles.

Mijn serie objecten van gefused glazen touw kruist nieuwe glasvormtechnieken met oude gebruiken van touwwerk, het vlechten van netten en omboorden. Glazen touw wordt met de hand gewonden en vervolgens gespannen op geometrische stellages. Uit geknoopte kruisende lijnen ontstaan complexe driedimensionale patronen en mooie details worden behouden door het zorgvuldig hanteren van het fuseproces.

De serie opgeblazen glas is werk dat ik al enkele jaren aan het onderzoeken ben. Het kan kortweg worden beschreven als gefused en opgeblazen vlakglas. Het fascinerende aspect van het proces is de overeenkomst met de manier waarop bepaalde soorten vormen worden gemaakt door natuurlijke omstandigheden. De eenvoudige vlakke geometrische fusings ondergaan een gedaanteverwisseling door druk van binnenuit en gedrag van het materiaal in gecompliceerd krommende spanningsverbanden die doen denken aan microscopisch leven, zaaddozen, bloemknoppen en zeepbellen.

Daughter of his Father 2014 I work mainly with the invention of my father.

Father is a big home improvement. He devised a small home greenhouse heating. The pipe linking the house of our greenhouse in the garden. Through the tube flow hot steam out of the house into the greenhouse, and the father basked greenhouse. Then the plants can grow well in cold weather. I work with daddy inventions and make it into a glass object Ik werk voornamelijk met mijn vaders uitvinding.

Mijn vader is altijd bezig zijn huis te verbeteren. Hij bedacht een kleine verwarming voor de kas thuis. De pijp koppelt het huis met onze kas in de tuin. Door de buis stroomt hete stoom vanuit het huis de kas in, en de door vader gekoesterde kas. Dan kunnen de planten bij koud weer goed groeien. Ik werk met papa’s uitvindingen en maak er een object in glas van. De mistmachine wordt gebruikt als metafoor voor verwarming.

Svínafellsjökull in the GlazenHuis 2015 Vermeren likes to be inspired by the way physical changes in her environment occur under the influence of time. She uses the geological landscape as a base. For the GlazenHuis she links the angular structure of the glass tower’s steel frame with the glacier surface of the Svínafellsjökull in Iceland. The overlaps in the lines transform from ice-crystals to polygons. The glass surface is working on both sides and causes the viewer to lose the north.

Vermeren laat zich graag inspireren door de manier waarop fysieke veranderingen in haar omgeving zich voordoen onder invloed van de tijd.

Hierbij hanteert zij het geologische landschap als basis. Voor het GlazenHuis linkt ze de hoekige structuur van het stalen frame van de glastoren met het gletsjeroppervlak van de Svínafellsjökull in IJsland. De overlappingen in het lijnenspel vervormen van ijskristallen tot polygonen. Het glasoppervlak werkt tweezijdig en laat de toeschouwer het noorden verliezen.

from the series Memories 2014 The work reflects my childhood in the Ukraine. I come of a family with a textile background. Fabrics, yarn and needles were floating throughout the house. Fabric one can easily fold and pull in all kinds of forms. For me glass is a carrier of memories. With my objects I want to have transformed a movement and perception into matter. A hastily thrown-down handkerchief refers to smells from the past, is a metaphor of time and process. You go on with your life and the handkerchief remains.

Het werk reflecteert mijn kindertijd in de Oekraïne. Ik kom uit een familie met textielachtergrond.

Stoffen, garen en naalden zweefden door het hele huis. Stof kan je met gemak vouwen en trekken in allerlei vormen. Glas is voor mij een drager van herinneringen. Met mijn objecten wil ik een beweging en beleving omgezet hebben in materie. ’n Vluchtig neergegooid zakdoekje verwijst naar geuren uit het verleden, is een metafoor van tijd en proces. Je gaat verder in je leven en het zakdoekje blijft liggen.

Een voortdurende herinnering aan alles wat onvolkomen is. — Materials: screenprinted glass powders were used to create a textured carpet pattern. The carpet was then intentionally distorted by walking over the unfired powder. The results were kilnformed.
