d A LETTER FROM

Andrew Alexander

It's crazy to consider how two little words ignited a comedy revolution: “Yes, and.”

This dynamic word duo is at the heart of everything we create here at The Second City. It’s the phrase that powers the art of improvisation – and how we’ve turned a small cabaret theater on Wells Street into the kind of place people stay connected to for decades, on stage and off. Do we love to put on a good show? Yes, and we decided to build not one, not two, but seven Second City stages to entertain our beloved, discerning audience (yes, you!) seven days a week right here in Piper’s Alley. Has improv changed our entire worldview? Yes, and we wanted to teach others how to harness the power of improvisation in their daily lives, which is why The Second City Training Center teaches over 11,000 students a year. Do we strive to build a Second City culture of acceptance and empathy? Yes, and we launched Second City Works to spread the comedy love with businesses of all shapes and sizes, meaning we get to inspire personal growth on a grand scale, all over the planet. Try saying “yes, and” for yourself sometime. I think you’ll find it’s pretty infectious. You might even start a revolution of your own.

HOW THE COMEDY SAUSAGE GETS MADE

Comedy

Sausage d HOW THE

d

GETS MADE

BREAKING DOWN THE SECOND CITY METHOD The makeup of a Second City show—or “revue,” as we call them—has remained virtually the same since the very beginning: two acts that are (mostly) scripted, followed by our famed third act of improvisation. The show is actually written by the cast over an eight- to ten-week rehearsal period. We call this sacred time “process,” and it’s a comedy gauntlet. The cast and crew rehearse all day long and perform at night, constantly testing and adjusting material based on the audience’s reactions and suggestions. Most new material is generated in those third-act improv sets, and if an improvised piece is particularly strong, it will be further refined the next day in a rehearsal with the director. (That means your suggestions are VERY IMPORTANT.) During process, the new material is introduced into the scripted show. Themes begin to develop, and the actors and directors craft the scenes into a brand new production. And a few months later, we do it all over again…

WHERE DID THE NAME THE SECOND CITY COME FROM? The Second City defiantly chose its name from a rather biting book written by New Yorker journalist A. J. Liebling in 1952, titled Chicago: The Second City. Explore more of our lore at secondcity.com/history.

CAN I TAKE A PHOTO DURING THE SHOW?

WHAT’S WITH THOSE CHAIRS? Resources were scarce when our co-founders Bernie Sahlins, Howard Alk, and Paul Sills built our first home up the street at 1842 N. Wells. The nightclub was furnished with 150 bentwood chairs, purchased at auction for $1 a piece. On opening night in 1959, six of those chairs served as the scenery. We haven’t changed the scenery in over 58 years.

Timing is everything. During the show, it is forbidden to take photos, text, tweet or otherwise use your phone. In addition to being disruptive to the performers and other audience members, taking photos or videos of the performance is prohibited. Prior to the show, during intermission or after the show, you’re welcome to take photos in the theater or lobby. Don’t forget to tag us @TheSecondCity.

OFFICE HOLIDAY PARTY

IT’S ALMOST THE MOST AWFUL TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN: OFFICE HOLIDAY PARTY SEASON. Brace yourself for the inevitable impact of watered down small talk and really watered down punch served room temp under the harsh glare of a conference room’s fluorescent lights. 16

GROUPS & EVENTS

FROSTY THE SNOWMAN But wait! You have a choice this year! Queue up the following soundtrack to your usual fa-la-la-lame gathering, or enlist the party pros at The Second City for a laugh-tacular event that ~won’t~ involve unleashing any of the following musical triggers:

BABY PLEASE COME HOME This one reminds you of texts from your neglected loved ones: spouses, partners, even your tech-savvy dog. The messages that have been coming through with increased frequency, thanks to all those late nights at the office. And should be popping up any second now, compliments of this “fun” “mandatory” “party.”

LITTLE DRUMMER BOY Remember when you were young? And fun? And played the drums in that sweet Queen cover band? Yeah, didn’t think so. That was a lifetime ago. But you do remember your login and password to your sweet software project management software, which technically isn't redundant. Jingle bell rock on.

Ah, the time-honored story of a snowperson come to life through the magic of a hat. You know who this reminds you of? The account rep who comes to life once a year through the magic of free pinot grigio. She always manages to end up going straight from a “jolly, happy soul” to a puddle at the end of the night, too.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU It’s pretty much a given that Mariah Carey delivered us the #1 holiday anthem of all time. It’s also a given that your designated Office Creeper will try to get you under the mistletoe next to the copy machine while quoting a line from this song...while you silently begin drafting your email to HR in your head.

YOU’RE A MEAN ONE, MR. GRINCH It will never cease to amaze you how your seasick crocodile of a boss sings along to every single word of this one...with zero irony.

Who Are The Faces ? y it C n d o c e S e Th e ts id Ou The iconic arches outside the Mainstage entrance on Wells Street originally graced the facade of the Garrick Theater, an 1891 architectural jewel designed by Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler. When the building was demolished in 1961, the arches found a new home at The Second City, thanks to the efforts of photographer and historical preservationist Richard Nickel. According to Chicago legend, the four faces depict prominent artists of the 18th and 19th century. From left to right: • Opera composer Giacomo Meyerbeer • Novelist Fritz Reuter • Composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart • Philosopher, dramatist, and art critic Gotthold Ephraim Lessing
