TAKE ME HOME!

A LETTER FROM ANDREW ALEXANDER If you go into comedy because you think it looks easy, then you’re in the wrong business. Improv teaches performers to actually learn to embrace failure and be grateful for the many, many, many times scenes fall flat. Inside failure is where the magic happens—and that’s why it’s unequivocally worth the risk, every time. Sixty years ago, The Second City’s co-founders—Bernie Sahlins, Paul Sills, and Howard Alk—risked abject failure to give Chicago a brand new nightclub created to showcase a fairly new art form called “improvisation”. Now here we are. In this room, built on thousands and thousands of failures.

- STEPHEN COLBERT

Over the years, much credit has been (deservedly) given to the risktakers on our stages, many of whom have gone on to be award-winning stars of the stage and screen and stream, as the entertainment world has changed dramatically over the last six decades. But one thing has remained the same since The Second City opened its doors for the first time in 1959: the unsung heroes of our legacy are you, our audience. Thank you for trusting us when we fail. Thank you for your laughter, which has shaped all of our shows. Thank you for rooting for us to succeed, both on the stage and beyond. Whether this is your first time here or you’re returning for your hundredth time, thank you for being the unrelenting force that keeps us going...for hopefully another sixty years.

– Andrew Alexander CEO & executive producer, The Second City

3

That’s because of the unique method our ensembles use to create a Second City show, or “revue,” as we call them: two acts that are (mostly) scripted, followed by our famed third act of improvisation, where most new show material is shaped and tweaked. Second City shows are actually written by the cast over an eight- to ten-week rehearsal period. We call this sacred time “process,” and it’s a comedy gauntlet. The actors rehearse all day long and perform at night, testing and adjusting new material based on the audience’s reactions and suggestions. Themes begin to develop, and eventually, we get to formally open a brand-new production. AMBER RUFFIN

This creative process, combined with the elements of improvisation that are paramount to our work, mean your suggestions are critical...and no two performances at The Second City are ever exactly the same. The show you’re here to see has never happened before, and it will never happen again. AT LEFT: Artist Bill Utterback began illustrating Second City

cast members in 1976, creating a time-honored tradition. KEEGAN-MICHAEL KEY

“IN THE FUTURE, IF I WANT TO SAY SOMETHING FUNNY, OR WITTY, OR DO AN IMPRESSION, I WILL NO LONGER EVER DO ANY OF THOSE THINGS.” —

MICHAEL SCOTT REGIONAL MANAGER, DUNDER MIFFLIN PAPER COMPANY

WHO SAYS YOU CAN’T BE FUNNY AT WORK? Despite what you might have heard, the ability to unleash laughter in the office can be a valuable asset. When employed effectively, humor can communicate to your co-workers that you are approachable and—even though you take the work seriously—you don’t take yourself too seriously. Who doesn’t want to work with someone like that? Here are five of the biggest myths surrounding humor in the workplace, debunked. MYTH #1: “IN ORDER TO TAKE MY JOB SERIOUSLY, I MUST TAKE EVERY SINGLE ASPECT OF IT SERIOUSLY.”

MYTH #4: “BEING FUNNY AT WORK MEANS MAKING FUN OF OTHER PEOPLE.”

These aren’t mutually exclusive. You can have a sense of humor and still get the job done. In many ways, it might help you be better at getting the job done.

The best organizations know how to effectively use humor to bring people together, help blow off steam, or re-energize– and that is never, ever accomplished when the joke is at someone else’s expense.

MYTH #2: “MY BOSS/CO-WORKERS WON’T RESPECT ME AS MUCH IF I SHOW MY SENSE OF HUMOR.”

MYTH #5: “MY JOB IS IN [INSERT SERIOUS INDUSTRY], SO THERE’S NO WAY I CAN USE HUMOR AT WORK.”

Being able to approach difficult or stressful situations with a dose of levity will have people clamoring to be on your team. Donuts also help.

In a critical/stressful/complicated situation, the ability to rely on humor is sometimes a game-changer. This doesn’t mean humor at the expense of productivity or creating an inclusive space–but as a way to come together and gain a fresh perspective.

MYTH #3: “IF I MEMORIZE A FEW GOOD JOKES, MY CO-WORKERS WILL THINK I’M FUNNY.” It’s your attitude and the vibe you give off–not your ability to recite a knock-knock joke–that wins over a team. (Shout out to knock-knock jokes, though. Due respect.)

These iconic stone arches originally graced the facade of the Garrick Theater, an 1891 jewel designed by 19th-century architects Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler. When the building was demolished in 1961, the arches found a new home at The Second City. According to Chicago legend, the four faces depict prominent artists of the 18th and 19th centuries:

Once the site of a movie theater, this space was reimagined in 2016 as a 25,000-squarefoot expansion of The Second City Training Center and HQ for the Harold Ramis Film School. Other Broadway projects include: Kinky Boots, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables (Revival), A Chorus Line (Revival), Baby It’s You!, Cry-Baby, and A Catered Affair.
