T.J. Mills tosses a football in the air while posing in front of the four state championship banners won by teams he coached at Sealy High School from 1994-1997. The school district has renamed Tiger Stadium after Mills, who passed away of a heart attack in April.

Tiger Stadium renamed for Coach Mills By JOE SOUTHERN editor@sealynews.com

When the Sealy Tigers take to the football field this fall, they will not be playing at Tiger Stadium. They will be playing in the same stadium and field they always have – the same place where NFL hall of famer Eric Dickerson got his start – they will just be calling it by another name. On June 17, the Sealy Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to rename the stadium after the late T.J. Mills, the coach who led the Tigers to four consecutive state cham-

pionships in the 1990s. The official name is T.J. Mills Stadium. Mills passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on April 7. The official dedication is being planned for the game on Sept. 25. A committee led by Bill Burttschell, president of Citizens State Bank, has deliberated for a month and recommended naming the stadium for Mills at the school board meeting. “This is really dear to our hearts and we feel like naming the football stadium after T.J. would be the least we can do for T.J. and his family. It would honor him and be a great honor for the school. There has been nobody

like him. T.J. had a passion not only for football but for Sealy,” Burttschell said. Superintendent Sheryl Moore accepted the recommendation and expressed appreciation for Mill’s legacy and the committee’s work. “What happened those four years has set a tone for the town. I think it has a lot to do for how generous people are to the district because I think there were some bonds and feelings that were established through that whole time that we as a district are still reaping the benefits from,” Moore said. Mills was 148-27 in 15 seasons at

Sealy. He coached the Tigers to state 3A championships in 1994-97 and went back to the title game in 1999, but lost to Commerce, 17-10. The Tigers had 10 district championships, and from 1993-1996 the team tied the state record for consecutive wins at

STADIUM continued from Page 3 35. The Tigers set the record in 1997 with 24 consecutive playoff wins, and had a combined record of 63-1 for those four years. Mills began is coaching career in Luling. After four years he went to Westbury in Houston. After a year as an assistant coach, he became the head coach. Three years later he became the head coach in Sealy, where he mounted a 15-year dynasty before moving on to Odessa Permian for three years and then ending his career

with a three-year stint in La Porte. On July 23, 2014, Mills was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor. Mills was born and raised in Pasadena. He graduated from Pasadena High School where he was a football player who played quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back.

Tiger football team coming on strong By STEVEN SCHROEDER spschroeder06@aol.com

The Sealy Tigers head football coach Jason Holcomb has the program on the verge of a return to prominence. If this year’s talented group of players find their rhythm on offense, the defense and its attacking, hard-hitting style of play will do their part in Sealy’s return to prominence. No one says it will be easy. Playing in District 11- 4A in Division 1 is a test in itself, considering the defending state champion Navasota Rattlers reside there. Besides being the reigning cham-

pions, depending on what poll you look at, the Rattlers are ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in state. Running back Christian Wallace, 6 foot 2 inches, 215 pounds will go a long way in deciding what kind of season the Tigers will have this year. His success will only be known if his offensive line, led by 6 foot 3 inch, 290-pound Derek Dabney, jells together and realizes their potential to be a dominant force on Friday nights. This

will be necessary especially if young sophomore quarterback Justin Eckhardt starts to progress when he returns this season from an injury he suffered in a scrimmage. Wallace gives Sealy a threat most teams can only dream of, as he can score on any play. The Tigers defense should be outstanding due in large part to their attacking style that leaves most opposing coaches scratching their heads, try-

ing to figure out what to do. T.J. Theriot will help anchor the defense as will middle linebacker Dante Jenkins. Defensive end Justin Welch, 5 foot 10 inches, 180 pounds, leads the defensive line. Meanwhile the defensive backs may be the most athletic and talented group the Tigers have. Free safety Kobe Aguado and cornerback John Mackey will be the leaders of this group.

Sealy's big man stands out at offseason camps By STEVEN SCHROEDER spschroeder06@aol.com

Derek Dabney may be the best offensive lineman in the state of Texas who most would not know. Standing 6 foot 3 inches, and weighing 290 pounds, he is the rock for Sealy’s offensive line. Dabney attended three national offensive lineman camps this summer and in doing so, he competed against the top-rated lineman in Texas. Dabney also competed at a lineman camp in Louisiana. While attending the national Elite Underclassmen lineup camps, Dabney was the third-rated lineman in one of those camps, while earning MVP honors in the other two camps. Dabney is most appreciated by his fellow teammates. “There is nothing like having those big guys up front leading the way,” running back Christian Wallace said. “To have Derek is a blessing. He seems to get the job done and open up holes

Derek Dabney made a big impression at three lineman camps he attended over the summer. He is the anchor of Sealy's offensive and defensive lines this year.

for me no matter what the situation. Dabney is very humble, he doesn’t like to talk about his accomplishments as an individual, every time a question is posed to him, it always leads back to him talking about team goals.” When asked about his elite camp experiences this summer, Dabney said, “I am just trying to get better, by the end of the year I want to have played in 16 games because that would mean we would be playing for a state championship.” Dabney is also a standout defensive lineman for Sealy. Anyone who has not seen Dabney play has definitely missed out on something special and unique. Sealy has all the potential in the world going into this season, and soft-spoken, hard working Dabney will play a large part if the team is to reach that potential this year.

Sealy volleyball has experience By STEVEN SCHROEDER spschroeder06@aol.com

This year’s version of the Sealy Lady Tigers volleyball team will be very exciting. The play an attacking style and will look to not only win a district title, but will strive to take the next step forward as a team. Last year’s regional finalist are fired up. After last year’s playoff run and the next step will be an appearance in Austin for a chance at the state title. The Tigers have plenty of firepower,

and will return a bevy of experience, with six seniors on the team, three sophomores, and two juniors. Sealy has a good mix of veterans and underclassmen. Seniors Amber Klesper, Hope Zaruba, Maelee Sowa, LaShanda Fitzgerald, and Kaelyn Wall look to make their senior season a memorable one. and Courntney Rabius was lost for the season due to injury. Look for Klesper to have plenty of assists with talented outside hitters Sowa and Rayann Rabius finishing at the net. Head Coach Jennifer Vaden is very

optimistic about the upcoming season. “Our girls are very coachable, they do everything that I ask of them, we just want to keep getting better and be playing our best volleyball when the playoffs get here,” she said. Vaden’s assistant coaches are Angie Kram and Michelle Braden. If the early play of this group is any indication, look for the Lady Tigers to be playing deep into the playoffs this year.

Sealy Cross Country sets regional goal By JASON B. HOGAN reporter@sealynews.com

The official rosters have been set and the Sealy Tigers cross country teams began running the gambit last weekend during Run the Ridge meet at Cypress Ridge High School. Adrian Rocha, Sealy boys and girls cross country coach, said he and his runners set this season’s bar at qualifying for regionals as a team. Before regionals, however, they will have to traverse a pool of talent through seven district meets with schools all vying for the same promise land. To do that requires cohesion and commitment. Last year, the girls were right there, Rocha said. The boys’ squad was limited due to key injuries of some of the top runners. Runners race through an average of 20 to 30 miles per week to train for regular competition, Rocha said. Every morning Rocha and his runners are up early. They’ve been training like that since June 22. “It’s their passion for it; waking up early,” Rocha said. That feeling is the same for him as well through the early morning grind. But, as a competitor, individualism sometimes takes priority. Rocha said runners would like to qualify for regional and state competition regardless of team success, especially varsity members. Individually, Rocha said, “[Runners] have a 50-50 chance to make state,” which is viewed like a playoff event. Once runners become high school

juniors, colleges begin to take notice of their performance and eventually offer scholarships. Last year saw Tiger pride brought to the regionals with Colton Gajewski and Amber Dent representing the boys’ and girls’ teams. Dent went on to state competition, and Gajewski missed out on participation by two qualifying spots. Rocha expects these two names to be heralded once again this season because of last year’s success, but he can see a few other surprise Tigers as well. There are three nails to hammer indi-

vidually each season for the Tigers: Lower running times, qualify for regional and state competition and get a college scholarship. Charlette Janicek, another of last year’s Tiger all-district honorees, went on to the University of Texas at San Antonio. But the girl’s cross country team has another member to watch this year, Monica Moreno, a returning senior. She had an injury in cross country last season but returned stronger in track. Rocha said Moreno was automatically varsity approved because of

her technique and endurance. All of these ingredients could possibly add to a stronger brew this season. To make it to regionals all together requires a hardworking, goal-oriented team. And to Rocha, “It’s worth it just to see what these kids are capable of.”

Grady Rowe looks for more of the same this year from his Bellville Brahmas. Last year, Bellville finished 10-2 for the season after losing in the area round of the playoffs. The defending District 12-4A Division II champions should be very good up front. The Brahmas ball-control offense, The Wing T, starts up front with offensive linemen Justin Williams, Hunter Lowe and Ben Carmean, who return to lead the way. Running back De’Eddrick Graves, 5 foot 10 inches and 150 pounds, returns after gaining 1,617 total yards last season. Graves also totaled 16 touchdowns and is a threat on any play to go the distance. Graves is the reigning MVP of the district. Just like their offensive teammates, the defenses success begins up front.

Defensive end Blake Strieder, 6 foot 2 inches and 210 pounds, has started 29 games. Meanwhile, his bookend Michael Scyrus, 6 foot 3 inches and 210 pounds, earned honorable mention All-State honors with 10.5 sacks last season. Anchoring the middle of the line is defensive tackle Dylan Jackson, 5 foot 9 inches and 215 pounds, the line backing corp will be led by Mac Briscoe, 5 foot 11 inches and 175 pounds, while the defensive back field will look to Kylan McDade, 5 foot 10 inches and 170 pounds, to anchor the backline. If the continuation of last year is any indication Bellville will once again be the team to beat in district play.

Knights seek safe return to the field By STEVEN SCHROEDER spschroeder06@aol.com

The Faith Academy Knights are looking to play their first complete game in nearly two years. A TAPPS 6 man football team, the Knights played only three quarters of one game last year and had to forfeit the season due to injuries and not having enough players to field a team. That all should change when they open play at home against Houston Sanchez at 7 p.m. on Aug. 28. Win or lose against Sanchez, the Knights will have won simply by taking the field. This season, the Faith Academy has 12 players on its roster, led by running back Troy Herring. Herring has shown when the Knights play that he has a lot of potential to be an outstanding playmaker. Herring will give the Knights the ability to be good every week with his skill set and a never-say-die attitude.

The Knights also possess two talented wide receivers in Grayson Shackelford and Jake Ewing. They are very good possession receivers and have the ability to turn a short pass into a big play. The line will be anchored by Will Woods and Travis Wilson. Each of the lineman are mobile and are astute students of the game. The Knights use traps and misdirection plays offensively in their run game. Having

lineman who make miniscule mental mistakes is imperative if Herring is to have a successful season running the ball. “These kids have a good attitude and a good work ethic,” Coach Kenneth Woodley said. “They have done everything I have asked them to. They don’t complain when it’s hot or when we are in the weight room. These kids listen in practice and they make my

Brazos Cougars showing big improvement By STEVEN SCHROEDER spschroeder06@aol.com

The 2015 Brazos Cougars may be one of the most improved teams not only in the area, but also in the state. Coach Mike Bonewald is starting his third season at the helm of the Cougars. Last years record of 4-6 was not indicative of the Cougars play. There were three different games that the Cougars came up short when the game just as easily could have went their way. The Cougars have an explosive offense that should once again give defensive coordinators headaches. Quarterback Chris Demney is back to lead the way after passing for more than 2,500 yards last season. Wide

receivers Shane Carpenter and Cameron Clark along with super sophomore Lyndon Hardin give Demney multiple threats to keep this offensive juggernaut rolling. Should the offense be anywhere close to last year these Cougars could still be playing as December approaches. This year the Cougar defense will be led by lineman Ferron Felix, linebackers Trace Indermuehle, Beau Gonzales, and defensive back Shane Carpenter. Should this young defense continue to improve, Brazos will have an opportunity to win in every game they play this season. “Our kids are buying into the program, our numbers have gone up each year,” Bonewald said. “We will have 24 kids on varsity and 28 on our subvarsity. I really think we have a chance to be very good this year. We very easily could have been 7-3 last season, so I am looking forward to this year.”
