containing their academic and leadership achievements plus community involvement for the preliminary screening and series of written examination, interviews, and an essay writing evaluation for the secondary screening which then selected him as one of the semifinalists among other 56 maritime student nominees for the final selection of TOMSP 2017 in Manila. “This achievement will serve as my platform to become an inspiration to my fellow maritime students specifically setting as an example of integrity, passion, assertiveness, dependability and excellence that will allow them to become globally competent seafarers someday,” Mdpn. Genilsa said. He also added that it is his perseverance and determination that landed him a spot in the search and that the TOMSP journey has honed him to become a better individual to influence his fellow seafarers that they can do more than what they think they already can. “It is an amazing journey to be with different maritime students coming from various maritime institutions in the country. I didnt expected that i’ll be one of the ten outstanding maritime students of the Philippines, knowing that there are 20 of us, finalists and only half will be chosen for the award. Despite of adversities it was still fun and challenging that tested me to my full potential,” Mdpn. Genilsa further stated. Moreover, the TOMSP is established by the Western Union which annually honors men and women seafarers who, according to the Seafarer’s Times, have shown academic excellence, competence in practical skills, good moral standing and engagement in serving the community through the search for TOMSP among the graduating maritime students in line with the yearly celebration of National Seafarers’ Day awards ten top students The search also aims to encourage and inspire future seafarers through their positive impacts in their communities.
