It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas…. in July!

Gin’s Shadow and Jimmy McConnell rode to the title of Christmas In July Grand Champions for owner Mike Floyd of Columbia, Tennessee.

SHELBYVILLE, TN- As fireworks lit the sky in honor of America’s birthday, so did the horse show arena lights in Middle Tennessee. The Fourth of July Walking Horse shows certainly created a bang of their own. Beginning the festivities was the Christmas In July Horse Show. This charitable horse show provides Christmas presents for low-income families in Bedford County. The two-night event was held on Wednesday, July 1st and Thursday, July 2nd at the Bedford County Agriculture Center. 355 entries were reported.

Three honorable judges served on the panel choosing this year’s champions. They were Danny Kistler, Paul Robbins and Robbie Spiller. 28 unanimous champions were crowned.

Princess Diana CCF and Joe Lester received the first win at this year’s show. Christmas Creek Farm owns the champion. The first night of competition ended with the crowning of the Riders’ Cup Mares and Geldings Champion. Receiving that honor was Tyler Baucom aboard Jose’s Tomboy for owners Billie and Kerry DeArmond.

In the young stallions division Casey Wright directed Jose’s Echo to the highest honor in the Riders’ Cup Two Year Old Stallions class. Bill and Debbie Woods own the entry. The Yellowstone was the Riders’ Cup Three Year Old Stallions winner with Rico Bravo in the irons for the Mary Dell Kilgore estate. Riding to the blue in the Riders’ Cup Four Year Old Stallions class was the dynamic duo of Jose Revival and Casey Wright. Bill and Debbie Woods own this champion, also.

Closing out the two nights of great horses was the Racking Specialty Action Championship and the Walking Horse Canter Championship. Skyliner and Bryan Barnhill were crowned the Racking Champions, unanimously, for owner Greg Kiser. Three outstanding entries made the final gate call in the Walking Horse Stake. Gin’s Shadow and Jimmy McConnell earned the win for owner Mike Floyd. This champion is the full brother to the 2018 World Grand Champion Gen A’Mighty, also owned by Floyd. Receiving the reserve award was Playing Gin with Tyler Baucom in the irons for Keith and Lorraine Rosbury. El’s Predicted Storm and Link Webb rode out with the yellow ribbon for owners LD and Tammy Austin.

OBITUARY- CHARLENE COX Well-known horse enthusiast, Charlene Cox passed away on July 4, 2020 at the age of 67. The Seymour, Tennessee resident was known in the Racking Horse Industry across the East Tennessee, North Carolina and Alabama show circuits.

Charlene was honored to serve on the judges’ panel at the Racking Horse World Celebration in 2015.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Maloy Proffitt Allen. Those surviving include her husband William H. (Bill) Cox of Seymour, son Michael Jason Freeman, grandson Chase (Sarah), great grandchild Harper, granddaughter McKenzie, grandsons Gage, and Cole, granddaughter Haven, sister Kimberly Allen, also survived by her many cousins , other family and a host of very dear friends.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, July 8, 2020 in Allen Cemetery with Daniel Bell officiating.

CANDID OF THE WEEK OBITUARY- SARAH ELISABETH MOERSCH PORTERFIELD A graveside service for Sarah Moersch Porterfield, 41, of Jacksonville, Alabama was held at noon on Friday, July 10, 2020, at Jacksonville City Cemetery. The Reverend Robert Fowler officiated.

Sarah passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, at her home. She is preceded in death by her father, Dr. Vincent Fuselli; her maternal grandfather, Dr. Robert Moersch; and paternal grandparents, Joseph and Rose Fuselli.

Mrs. Porterfield graduated from Jacksonville State University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree, and in 2003 earned her master’s degree in English Literature. A few years later in 2007, she had the opportunity to work at her Alma Mater as a professor of English Literature. She especially enjoyed the works of Edgar Alan Poe, and her specialty was Southern Literature. Sarah was known as a very dedicated teacher and cared deeply for her students, willing to work tirelessly for their success. She was a member of Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church in Jacksonville and was loved by all who knew her. She will be truly missed.

Allison Thorson and Multi World Champion, The Ninth Wonder, take a candid moment after winning the Equitation Canter division at the recent Money Tree Classic. Each win is special to Thorson, but this was an incredible moment as she earned this honor for the 11th straight year. Congratulations to Allison and The Ninth Wonder.

PUCKETT JUDGING FAYETTEVILLE The Fayetteville Blue Ribbon Horse Show will take place on Friday, July 31st, at the Lincoln County Horseman’s and 4-H Show Grounds. Johnny Puckett has accepted the invitation to judge the event which will mark its’ 39th year.

SHOW RELEASES NUMBERS SHOW, Inc. released the official numbers from the Fourth of July horse shows in Middle Tennessee. There were four nights of shows; Christmas In July- 7/1 & 7/2, Money Tree Classic- 7/3 and Woodbury Lions Club- 7/4. A total of 806 horses were inspected. What a great turnout!

Survivors include her loving husband, Bentley Porterfield; son, Jonathon Moersch Porterfield; mother, Dr. Barbara Moersch; grandmother, Marion C. Moersch; brothers, Joseph Fredrick Fuselli and his wife, Sarah Jeanette David of Mobile, Michael Peter Fuselli and his wife, Rachel Marie Ford of Fenton, MI, and Stephen Anthony Fuselli of Columbia, MO; cousins, Robert C. Calin, William A. Fielding, Joel T. Fielding, and Jessica Wiley; aunt, Jacqueline Fielding and her husband, Dr. William T. Fielding; and uncle, Fredrick Paul Moersch and his wife, Pamela.

Pallbearers were Joseph Fredrick Fuselli, Michael Peter Fuselli, Stephen Anthony Fuselli, Robert Charles Calin, William Alan Fielding, Joel Thomas Fielding, and James Warren Porterfield.

Honorary pallbearer will be Frank H. Mosley.

CELEBRATION BANS CONFEDERATE FLAG The Celebration Board of Directors have voted to ban the use of or flying of the confederate flag on its show grounds moving forward. This was a unanimous decision of the Celebration Board of Directors. It is based on their desire to provide the most inclusive environment for all exhibitors, trainers, fans and staff. No matter the event, this decision will be enforced at all times on The Celebration show grounds.

CELEBRATION MAKING PLANS FOR 82ND WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP News Release from the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration board of directors continued to finalize plans for the upcoming 82nd Annual Celebration to be held August 26th – September 5th. The board met July 6, 2020 and made some final decisions regarding the upcoming horse show in light of the COVID-19 recommendations from local, state and federal guidelines.

1. BOX SEATING The Celebration will reconcile the sale of its box seats on July 15th to check available inventory. If at that time box seat holders that would like to move their location to a less crowded area they can work with Celebration staff to do so. The move will be a one-year temporary move and the customer will not lose the right to the original box they’ve previously had. Also, if the customer moves to a different location they will be refunded the difference in price if the new box is less expensive and charged the difference if the new box is more expensive than their original box.

2. BLUE RIBBON CIRCLE CLUB The Celebration will have the Blue Ribbon Circle Club but will add a new outside location which will be located in the front lawn of the current Blue Ribbon. The area will have a tent and be equipped with table tops for those that would prefer to be in the outside air but also to increase the spacing of the club. On the most attended nights, the outside location will offer bar service and some food service. The food selection will be similar to past years in the Blue Ribbon Circle but may be limited in the selection as the food caterer will have servers in place instead of patrons serving themselves. The Celebration will follow state guidelines on occupancy and may limit those in the area at any specific time. We will continue to update our pass holders as we get closer to time.

3. CORPORATE SPONSOR PARTY Unfortunately, the Celebration will not have a corporate sponsor party in 2020. The board just didn’t feel comfortable with the current executive orders in place of having that many people in one confined location. Due to this cancellation this year, the board did upgrade the Blue Ribbon Circle decorations, add the outdoor area and on the first Saturday night will have a special meal during the normal time of the sponsor party for those sponsors that would like to eat prior to the show.

4. POST SHOW ENTERTAINMENT In the past several years the Celebration has hosted after-show entertainment in the Blue Ribbon Circle Club. Those band parties have been very popular but due to the current circumstances the Celebration will not host those parties after the show this year. In addition, in previous years barns have hired bands and entertainment to play at their locations on the show grounds. Unfortunately, in 2020 this will not be allowed due to the large crowds that gather at those barn parties. Individual barns can still have gatherings, food and normal customer entertainment but just won’t be allowed to bring in outside entertainment.

5. STABLING The Celebration will require all championship entries to stable on the show grounds for 48 hours prior to their championship performance. The entry deadline for championship classes will once again be 12:00PM two days prior to your championship evening performance (for example Thursday evening championship entries will be required to be on the show grounds by showtime Tuesday evening).

6. CELEBRATION SELECTS JUDGING PANEL FOR 82ND ANNUAL SHOW The 82nd Annual Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration will be judged by

the experienced panel of Rollie Beard, Ross Campbell, Mike Hilley, Sam Sorrell and Leigh Stuart. The panel has a collective 20 Celebration’s judged between them.

“We are excited to announce this panel for our 82nd Annual Celebration. They bring a wealth of knowledge in both our flat shod and performance divisions as well as a geographic diversity in where they come to us from,” said Celebration CEO Mike Inman.

The Celebration judges’ committee met on Monday July 6, 2020 and made the recommendations to the full board who later that day ratified the selections recommended by the committee. The Celebration affiliates with the SHOW HIO, which is owned by The Celebration and selects the panel from the list of AAA licensed judges at the SHOW HIO. There were 20 AAA judges that expressed the desire and availability to judge this year’s show.

Beard, from Lewisburg, Tenn., is the most experienced of the panel, judging The Celebration eight times previously. The most recent was in 2014 but also includes stints judging in Maverick Arena in 1988, 1994, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2013.

Beard has been active lately in some of the industry premier events including the 2019 Spring Fun Show, Money Tree Classic and North Carolina Championships. He also judged the Columbia Spring Jubilee this year.

Sam Sorrell, from Lexington, Ky., has previously judged The Celebration six times.

Sorrell marked the cards in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2015, 2016 and 2018. Sorrell most recently judged the Money Tree Classic on July 3, 2020 but has judged most every major venue in the industry including twice at The International in 2005 and 2010.

Leigh Stuart, from Alvaton, Ky., has been a popular choice in recent years and will be making her fifth appearance at The Celebration. Stuart previously judged in 1997, 2013, 2016 and 2018. Stuart also judged the Tunica Fall Classic in 2016 and 2019 for The Celebration and she too has judged The International. Stuart is respected for her knowledge of the SHOW rulebook and her role in the drafting of it.

Hilley, from Shelbyville, Tenn., will be marking the cards for the second time in 3 years. Hilley judged The Celebration for the first time in 2018. Hilley has judged the Tunica Fall Classic in 2014 and 2019 and most recently judged at the 2020 Money Tree Classic in Calsonic Arena.

Campbell, from Cullman, Ala., will be making his second appearance in the big oval.

Campbell judged with Stuart and Hilley at the 2018 Celebration. Campbell has also judged the Tunica Fall Classic, FAST Spring Showcase, Gulf Coast Charity and Money Tree Classic. Campbell also judged this year’s Columbia Spring Jubilee with Beard.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Celebration felt it prudent to select two alternates for this year’s show in case any of the five initial selections were to fall ill and be forced to quarantine. Chris Bobo and Paul Robbins will serve in those alternate roles, after both received serious consideration by the committee.

“We are extremely excited to work with this group of judges to make our 82nd Annual Celebration the best it can be. Competition has been extremely tough to start the year and we expect large numbers and deep classes for this group to consider later in August,” concluded Inman.

THE AMERICAN NATIONAL MAIDEN CHAMPIONSHIP Due to the number of entries being received, the MAIDEN WILL RUN TWO SPLITS AND A FINAL! Wednesday, August 12th will feature two splits of the class, each containing 50% of the total entries, giving trainers the opportunity to show multiple horses. The first two splits WILL NOT BE TIED. The top half of each split will be invited back for The Finals on Thursday, August 13th at 4:00pm. Ribbons, Awards, and Purse Money will be awarded in The Finals on Thursday culminating with the crowning of the 2020 American National Insurance Maiden Champion.

“The Maiden” is the class reserved for two year old trail pleasure horses that have never been shown under saddle. The inaugural running of The Maiden in 2019 paid out $7,200 in purse money and another $10,000 in awards and trophies to the 15 horses shown. In 2019 The Maiden proved to be a force within the Tennessee Walking Horse industry and the most significant Flat Shod class the industry has seen to date. TWHBEA NATIONAL FUTURITY UPDATE The TWHBEA National Futurity will take place on August 26th in Calsonic Arena.

Organizers have added the following jackpot classes to their original show schedule: Class 4A- Riders’ Cup Yearling Colts and Class 19A- Riders’ Cup Yearling Fillies.

SLAGLE SELECTED AS JUDGE The Wartrace Horse Show will take place on Saturday, August 1st. Show management has selected Rod Slagle to mark the cards for their 114th Anniversary event.

OBITUARY- ELVIN SAPP Elvin Emery Sapp , 84, passed away on July 5th, 2020 at his home in Columbia, Missouri surrounded by his family.

Visitation was Wednesday, July 8th at Memorial Funeral Home with a graveside service that followed in Memorial Park Cemetery. Elvin was born on June 24, 1936 in Boone County, the son of Everett Emery and Velma Loraine Sapp, they preceded him in death.

Elvin graduated from David H. Hickman High School in 1955. As a senior, he began a lifelong career as a respected and well known homebuilder and land developer. He and his father, Emery Sapp built homes together in the late ‘50’s through the mid ‘70’s. In the early ‘60’s he expanded the business to include the development of several residential subdivisions. Elvin had a gift for looking at a piece of raw ground and visualizing it’s potential. That gift enabled him to develop some of Columbia’s premier residential developments throughout his life, Bluff Creek, Thornbrook and Bristol Lake being some of the most recent. Elvin enjoyed his work and liked sharing his vision and expertise with family. In the early 90’s he furthered his legacy by mentoring his son Shannon into the homebuilding business and later brought both Shannon and his grandson Justin into the development side of the business. He also encouraged his daughter Valerie to represent them as a real estate agent. Elvin with his brother Billy and other family investors were founding members of Columbia Ready Mix and Emery Sapp and Sons, Inc. He served on the Board of Directors of Century State Bank in Columbia and was a past Secretary of the Homebuilders Association.

Elvin married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Mary Geraldine (Geri) Murray, she survives. True to their vows taken 64 years ago, their devotion to each other has been an inspiration to many. He is survived by their daughter, Valerie Barnes (Alan), son, Shannon Sapp (Diane), six grandchildren, Justin Barnes (Brooke), Megan Barnes Harris (Tyler), Brittany Sapp Smarr (Kyle), Coleman Sapp, Clayton Sapp and Carley Sapp and seven great grandchildren, Rylee, Hudson and Rhett Harris, Quinn and Lincoln Barnes and Clay and Hayden Smarr. He is also survived by a sister Norma Bennett (Marvin) and a brother, Billy Sapp (Glenda) and several nieces and nephews.

If asked, Elvin would always say he enjoyed getting up and going to work, to him, it was not a job. He loved finding land, picturing it in his head and then developing it. He liked a good Pitch card game and “calling” square dances with family. He also enjoyed showing and raising horses. Many great memories were made with family and lifelong friends while caring for and showing their horses around Missouri and surrounding states. Elvin will be remembered for his devotion to his family and for his great work ethic. He was an honorable and respected man.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donation be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of choice in care of the funeral home. The Scoop sends our thoughts and prayers to The Sapp Family.

PWHAT Hosts Jamboree LEBANON, TN- The Pleasure Walking Horse Association of Tennessee held their Pleasure Horse Jamboree on Saturday, July 11th at the James Ward Ag Center. This show was part of the 2020 Show Series. There are two more remaining for this year. The next one scheduled will take place on September 19th at the Justus Carter Training Facility in Bell Buckle, and the final one will be the Oktoberfest, on October 17th in Woodbury.

The Jamboree was a great success. The Honorable Molly Lewis served as judge. The All Day Pleasure divisions seemed to draw the most entries throughout the day. Taking the top spot in the All Day Pleasure Amateur Western class and in the All Day Pleasure Amateur English class was Bud’s Chocolate Drop with Maggie Painter in the irons. The All Day Pleasure Youth champions were Poppy Cat and Riley Gregory. Maggie Moore took top honors in the All Day Pleasure AOT class with Roan Ranger, the All Day Pleasure Two & Three Year Olds class with Side Effects, and the All Day Pleasure Four & Five Year Olds class with Priviledged. There were many other champions crowned and The Scoop congratulates each one. It was a pleasure capturing your winning memories.

Harley Bennett claimed the first ribbon of the 2020 Jamboree in the Showmanship class.

Riley Gregory took the top prize in the Showmanship Youth class.

Pusher’s Guarded Secret and Victoria Kalosis grabbed the blue in the Model Mares class.

Pusher’s Guarded Secret won two more blues with D A McGovern. The wins were in the Racking Pleasure class and in the Racking Pleasure Amateur class.

Earning more blues was Riley Gregory and Poppy cat. This duo won the Pleasure Youth Medallion Canter class and the All Day Pleasure Youth Class.

Wyatt Morgan and He’s Outa Here took top honors in the TWH Pleasure Youth Walk Only class.

Horses Visit Sweet Virginia

CHATHAM, VA- The Virginia Walking and Racking Horse Owners’ Association held their annual horse show on June 26th and 27th at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex. The two-day show showcased 56 classes of Tennessee Walking Horses, Racking Horses and Spotted Saddle Horses. Brent Carter and Andy Carter marked the cards, serving as the judges.

The VWRHOA Members Only Pleasure class had a great turnout and claiming the top honor in that division was Walk Like Mick Jagger with owner Tomi Chittum in the irons. Riding to the blue in the VWRHOA Members Only Specialty class were Walk On Command and Karen Baum.

The horse show’s final list of classes was the championship classes for various divisions. El Mariachi and owner Ava Tuck won the TWH Pleasure Championship. The Spotted Open Shod Championship title went to Beams On Parole and owner Eric Johnson. Charlie Rich and his owner Stella Lovelace were crowned the Racking Trail Pleasure champions while Luck Of The Ritz and Grandy Tuck Jr. were crowned Trail Pleasure champions for owner John Harris. Riding to the top honor in the Park Pleasure Championship was Grassy Creek Gin with Grandy Tuck Jr. in the saddle for Angela Tuck. Debbie Simpson directed Honor Society to the Racking Championship title for owner Harold Keatts. He’s So Fine carried Curtis Thompson to the Racking Specialty Action Championship win for owner Sandy Livingston. The class that closed out a great weekend was the Walking Horse Championship.

Ice Cold Gold and Allen Abee received the final championship ribbon for owner Tom Shipman.
