The meeting is the first of three taking place over the next few weeks. Scarborough’s five rotary clubs combine their efforts to hold these public consultations. At L’Amoreaux, residents examined important issues via round-table discussions.

“We’re seeking to identify action to change the conver-

sation on Scarborough,” said Henry Hakomaki, charter member of the Scarborough Twilight Rotary Club. “ As such, we’re hosting a series of townhall meetings to build a network with community groups, businesses and organizations.”

The three issues discussed were economic development, urban planning and arts and culture.

The memory of Corporal Jo s h u a Ca l e b Ba k e r, a Scarborough resident and Canadian Forces soldier who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Feb. 12, 2010, was honoured by the city this week.

Cpl. Baker was born in Scarborough and raised on Canlish Road, where his family has resided for three generations. Last Thursday, Canlish Rd. was ceremonially named after him.

His mother, Janet Baker, gave an emotional speech about her only child at the unveiling ceremony.

“I never could’ve imagined standing here today for the reason we are,” she said solemnly. “When I’m gone, people will see his name. And even though they never met him, someone will look him

Upon the unveiling of the new street sign, Joshua’s mother looked up at the sky and blew a kiss after seeing her son’s name. The new sign reads “Cpl. Joshua Caleb Baker” above “Canlish Rd.” Cpl. Baker was bor n June 14, 1985 and joined the Canadian Forces at the age of 18. He was then part of the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team. His senior rank and file described

him as someone “ready for greatness” Alongside Cpl. Baker’s mother during the unveiling were Lt. Gov. of Ontario David Onley, the family’s pastor Dr. Randall Thomas and Scarborough councillors Michael Thompson and Paul Ainslie of Wards 37 and 43, respectively.

Several Canadian Forces veterans also attended, along with Canlish Road neighbours. Tears were seen on almost every face while Janet spoke.

“My heart is completely shattered that you’re gone,

but I will see you again,” Janet said, referencing her and her son’s Christian faith. “This street is dedicated to you from your mother with love.”

Lt. Gov. Onley recalled memories of when he first met Cpl. Baker. Onley’s sons used to play with him when they were younger. He called the ceremony “one of the most important” in his life.

“It’s a distinct privilege to be with you all here today as we honour a great young man in this tangible and meaningful way,” he said.

The family’s pastor, Dr. Thomas, said the intersection was “appropriate” to be named in his honour. He said that Cpl. Baker’s “footprints marked this intersection” and that his “laughter echoed through this neighbourhood.”

Awareness about oil pipeline activity a priority in Toronto

I

t travels underground right across Toronto, beside busy roads, near the backyards of homes and an elementary school, has been around for almost 40 years and yet many residents have no idea it even exists.

However, all that is quickly changing for the Enbridge oil pipeline known as Line 9.

Environmental groups are concerned with a federal decision earlier this year to allow bitumen oil, known as tarsands oil, to be pumped through the pipeline.

In today’s edition, residents can learn more about Line 9.

Environmentalists say the bitumen oil is heavier than the light crude oil Line 9 presently carries, and the consequences of a spill due to a breakage in the line could be dire, especially since the line crosses the Humber, Don and Rouge rivers in Toronto.

The environmental concerns are heightened by the age of the line, which was built our view in 1976, and by the fact bitumen oil is considered more corrosive We need a say than light crude.

Enbridge, however, rejects the on emergency notion that bitumen oil will be flowing through Line 9. A spokesresponse plan person said light crude will be the bulk of what Line 9 carries as the refineries that take the oil are not “heavy” refineries. Whether the capability of those refineries changes to deal with bitumen in the future remains to be seen.

As part of the approval by the National Energy Board (NEB) to allow bitumen oil through the pipeline, Enbridge is carrying out work related to pipeline integrity and the creation of an emergency response plan.

And it’s in this emergency plan that Toronto residents need to be especially involved.

Toronto Councillor David Shiner said the City of Toronto is working with Enbridge on emergency response plans, but much of what needs to be done is under the jurisdiction of the federal government.

Enbridge has filed a plan with the NEB and says it is waiting for a response before making the details public.

When those details become public, Toronto residents must be given numerous opportunities for input on the emergency response plan.

Given the thousands of homes and busy roadways located so close to Line 9, Toronto residents’ awareness of Line 9 and an understanding of what to do in an emergency must become a priority for Enbridge, the federal government and the City of Toronto.

Pumpkin sightings popping up all over With winter overstaying its welcome, spring and summer were both relegated to playing a game of catch-up this year and neither seemed to be able to find their stride. Can fall buck this trend and get the seasons back in sync?

It’s a tall order to be sure, but with the sightings of pumpkins, one can hope.

Pumpkins have always been an unofficial beginning of autumn and they’re popping up all over.

It’s getting darker earlier and lighter later, too. It’s also getting cooler in the evenings and mornings – a few more signs that fall is underway.

It’ll be watching the squirrels closely next. It’s typically scurrying time for them right about now. My concern is whether there will be enough nuts out there for all of them. We lost a lot of trees with the icy winter. But I wouldn’t bet against squirrels stepping up their game. They’re

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY a resourceful bunch. I’ll be rooting for them. Fall wouldn’t be fall without squirrels doing their thing.

The leaves look like they’re getting ready to start changing. The Leafs, too.

Both are indications that it’s fall.

The same can be said for the evergreens not changing. You can say that about evergreens any season, of course. But their perpetual glow really stands out in the fall, when all other colours around them begin to fade.

We’re seeing the last of bees and flies for awhile and birds are shrinking in numbers as well. All right on cue.

But there is still a little maintenance that has to take place for fall to truly to be fall. Boats have to all be back to the docks and marinas. Pools have to be cov-

ered with tarps. Windows have to be washed. Screens removed.

And lawn furniture? Bye now. Buh-bye. You too, lawn mower. Back to the shed for both of you. Rakes get in standby mode.

Uh, uh, uh, snow shovels.

Don’t so much as flinch.

Don’t even think about it.

This is Toronto, not Calgary.

We’ll let you know when we need you. Our people will call your people.

White pants? Take a hike.

What do you think you’re doing out here? You should have been gone long after Labour Day. You know the rules.

Light, skimpy clothes? As much as we enjoy wearing and watching you, nothing lasts forever. Adios until next summer.

Coats and jackets you can leave your hangers.

Cuddly sweaters you can come out of your drawers.

And that’s about it.

Due to climate change the seasons have been

taking a real hit of late. Fall has not escaped its wrath, but it doesn’t seem to have been affected nearly as much as the other three which is a tribute to the resilience of its key components: pumpkins, leaves, squirrels and the like.

So turkeys, over to you.

You’re by far the biggest fall stars of all and you’ll be front and centre in short order. Given the circumstances there is sure to me more pressure on you this Thanksgiving than ever before.

It’s a lot to ask I know and we’ll all understand if you’re not up to it. But a word of advice before you do decide if you’re going to decide to step up to the plate or not: if you can’t stand the heat, you might want to stay out of the kitchen.

he new Malvern Family Resource Centre building was inaugurated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday.

The building sits at its new location on 90 Littles Rd. and features a gymnasium, computer lab and outdoor program space.

Community residents gathered in the brand new

hall to start the ceremony.

It began with an introduction from MFRC executive director Girmalla Persaud and chairperson of the board of directors, Dr. Sheridan Cyrus.

“I want to thank all of the donors from the local community,” Cyrus said.

“Without them this would not be possible.”

A special thanks was given to the late Dan Ganeshan, a volunteer at MFRC who initiated a

public fundraising campaign. A plaque was given to his widow, Elizabeth Ganeshan.

Scarborough-Rouge River MPP Bas Balkissoon also gave an address, followed by the Hon. Tracy MacCharles, Minister of Children and Youth Services and Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues.

“You are building a strong community,” said MacCharles, the MPP for

Pickering-Scarborough East.

“This centre helps people of all ages and backgrounds. There are some great programs for young people, seniors and women.”

150,000 visits Cyrus noted in his address that last year the old MFRC building had 150,000 visits. He said this year, the centre anticipates

much more.

The centre was moved to a newer location and to a larger building to “meet some of the growing demands of the community,” Persaud said.

“We serve as a central hub for activities for the community,” she said.

“The feedback has been positive and supportive.”

After initial addresses to residents, the excited crowd headed outside for the official ribbon

cutting. Persaud, Cyrus, Balkissoon, MacCharles and Ward 42 ScarboroughRouge River Councillor Raymond Cho cut the red ribbon together.

“When communities have these programs, it brings people together and helps the community thrive,” MacCharles said.

“It could be a role model for other centres.”

Fringe candidates face battle david nickle the city Ari Goldkind, a criminal lawyer with a progressive platform and a genially aggressive style, has been complaining for months about the fact that debate organizers won’t invite him to the table to test his ideas against Chow’s and Tory’s and Ford’s. On Monday night, the Forum poll finally found he charted.

Morgan Baskin, an articulate young community activist, has been running a youth-oriented campaign from the fringes, and has rarely had a chance to debate issues. There are others – dozens – and each and every one of them, I suspect, will be a little miffed that I didn’t name them. To those, I offer no apology: absent ideas or coherent expression of same, a candidate deserves every inch of the fringe they inhabit. But candidates like Goldkind and Baskin are a different matter. Both are

attempting to inject reasonable and thoughtful alternatives into the debate, all while wearing appropriate business attire (something by no means a given among the fringe candidates). They don’t have CVs (at least not the kind that get you elected mayor), they aren’t famous... aren’t even infamous. But they seem like they have a plan. It’s kind of sad in one way, seeing these welldesigned campaigns and earnest candidates ignored.

In another way, it’s frustrating to watch these candidates seeming to do nothing so much as squander their time in the limelight.

It’s difficult in our imperfectly free country for intelligent ideas to work their way up from the bottom. That’s not to say that they can’t – but it’s a tough row to hoe, having to sell both one’s controversial notions and one’s own untested credibility at a time when all eyes are looking elsewhere.

John Tory and Olivia Chow both rode into the campaign with public CVs sufficiently massive to attract money with an almost gravitational force.

Enbridge spokesperson Graham White said Line 9 has been misrepresented by those opposed to it, and it is not a tarsands oil pipeline.

“Line 9 will carry primarily light oil as it did prior to the planned reversal. The destination refineries are ‘light’ refineries and do not have significant capability to refine heavy products like bitumen oil,” he said.

However, Enbridge has permitted shippers to transport different oil blends which includes heavier grades such as bitumen.

The 38-year-old pipeline could start transporting the heavier grade bitumen as early as December, say some environmental groups.

Sa b r i n a Bow m a n , o f Environmental Defence, is skeptical of Enbridge’s assertion that the line will pump mainly light oil.

“With the NEB approval they can pump as much of the tarsands oil as they want and we wouldn’t know,” she said.

Since the NEB approval, a series of integrity digs on the pipeline have been taking place to help support the planned capacity increase, said White, with one work site being at G. Ross Lord Dam and Park in North York.

Environmental groups cite an Enbridge spill that saw 3.3 million litres of oil go into Michigan’s Kalamazoo

River on July 25, 2010 as cause for concern. That spill is estimated to have cost Enbridge more than $1 billion and is reportedly the largest on-land oil spill in U.S. history according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Last December, in light of the growing concerns, To r o n t o C i t y C o u n c i l requested Enbridge have an emergency response strategy in place for Toronto in order to minimize the impact of any potential spill.

Wa rd 2 4 W i l l ow d a l e Councillor David Shiner has been a part of the city effort to implement safety emergency response plans. At the moment, he said there are no such plans in place in the Greater Toronto Area.

“We are trying to make sure Enbridge can make the line as safe as it possibly can make it,” Shiner said. “But the city can only do so much since it’s an issue that needs to be handled at the federal level. The federal government gave permission, but hasn’t pressured Enbridge, as much as the City of Toronto has done to implement safety procedures. Right now the city doesn’t have the capacity to respond to a disaster.”

Enbridge filed an Emergency Response Action Plan this past July with the NEB and is waiting for feedback before releasing details about it later this October.

Having spoken to communities along Line 9, Environmental Defence said most residents they contacted were unaware of the pipeline and the possibility of it carrying tar sands oil.

While White said that between May 2012 and July 2013, Enbridge met with more than 60 municipalities, 150 emergency responder groups,

GO is planning to run extra rail trips on all seven if its lines for patrons of

PARKING RESTRICTIONS on King St. wEXTENDED

The city’s transportation department has extended rush-hour parking restrictions on a stretch of King Street West.

The changes, which are already in effect, mean parking is restricted along King between Bathurst Street and Roncesvalles Avenue a further hour weekday morn-

ings from 7 to 10 a.m., and in the afternoon between 3 and 7 p.m.

A statement from the city says the change comes after a city council decision from July intended to reduce congestion on the busy segment of King as well as improve streetcar service.

Area residents discuss issues at Rotary meeting >>>from page 1 “If you don’t have a car and can’t travel then your employment is directly tied to transit,” said Alan Keith, president of Everest College, involved in the round-table community discussion. “So the question is how can transit support economic development.”

Residents also made observations that the lack of transit in Scarborough makes it difficult to attract workers and businesses. Many cited that those living in Scarborough often work outside of the borough in Pickering, Markham

or Mississauga.

Regarding the upcoming election, one woman said she “needs much more clarity” to make an informed decision on transit. Suggesting the current transit strategies are not well defined.

Another resident, Friends of the Guild Park and Gardens president John Mason, said the “prerequisite of economic expansion in Scarborough is transit.” The reasons he gave were the high demand of UTSC and Centennial College students relying on transit and vying for their first jobs

in the area.

Residents mentioned the need to highlight the strong elements of Scarborough that can aid in renewal, such as it’s large and diverse labour force, its two major post-secondary institutions and it’s industrial land.

Other suggested bringing in industry that would be anchored in the area such as manufacturing and engineering.

There was also distress to the prospect of losing former industrial land to developers building condomini-

ums. Residents said that if Scarborough loses industrial land, it would be difficult for the city to drive industrial growth in the east end.

The meeting came to a close when residents shared their thoughts, ideas and suggestions to Rotary Club members. The aim of the Rotary Clubs is to gather input through discussion to create a “vision” for renewal, Hakomaki said.

‘Politics of division’ play role in mayoral campaign MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com It may turn out to be a temporary truce, but it feels like the political civil war inside Toronto is ending.

People have heard for years that this city – created from six municipalities in the late 1990s – is divided.

Residents of the so-called inner suburbs and the “downtown” of old Toronto, the argument goes, didn’t want to merge and don’t have the same values.

Like it or not, Rob Ford, a councillor from the megacity’s northwestern corner, used that argument four years ago to become mayor.

After seven years under a left-leaning mayor, David Miller, Ford portrayed Miller allies in old Toronto as spendthrifts and the young megacity as close to financial collapse.

To suburban voters who shared his dislike of bicycle lanes and streetcars, Ford offered something the city’s core already had – subways,

starting with an extension of the Sheppard line to the Scarborough Town Centre.

Ford walloped his rival George Smitherman, an exLiberal MPP from Rosedale.

He won most easily in north Etobicoke, western North York and in Scarborough, while Smitherman ward victories were kept to old Toronto.

Four years later, almost everybody who doesn’t live near a subway line still wants one, a fact the politicians can’t ignore.

But municipal and provincial representatives have settled on one suburban subway project – extending the Bloor-Danforth line from Kennedy station in Scarborough to Sheppard Avenue – as a city-building exercise.

Olivia Chow is left opposing the Scarborough subway, arguing it’s a needless expense compared to the light-rail line judged appropriate for the area by transit experts, but her stand has hurt her Scarborough support.

– who supports building the extension alongside his scheme for frequent commuter rail, called SmartTrack – have spoken of the need to end the “politics of division” at city hall.

You can see the downtownversus-suburbs fight, Tory added, in the failure to work together on a transit plan, and therefore “in our traffic and transit nightmare.”

Before he handed the candidacy to his brother Doug – who hasn’t laid out a transit platform, but said he hopes to serve hard-working people and not “the special interest groups and the privileged few” – the ailing Ford promised more subways, including extensions to replace light rail already approved along Sheppard and Finch Avenue West.

Critics said his plan made no financial sense but Ford, after riding the money-losing Sheppard subway to Don Mills, insisted density follows subway construction and pays for it.

“This is what people want,”

For Jim Kar ygiannis, an ex-MP running in Scarborough-Agincourt’s Ward 39, where Ford beat Smitherman by a 40 per cent margin, a subway project in Scarborough south of Hwy. 401 isn’t enough.

“People north of the 401 should not be second-class citizens,” Karygiannis said this month, arguing his future constituents deserve a subway too, “and they’ve given me my marching orders” to fight for a Sheppard extension to McCowan Road.

“People in Scarborough should stand up and say they’re not going to take it anymore,” he added.

There is another divide, though, that of Toronto’s widening income gap, which politicians have seemed more reluctant to address.

The Toronto Community Foundation spelled out the city’s paradox in 2010: How can Toronto be so praised for

its “liveability” and also be “severely unaffordable,” with a deepening gap between rich and poor?

Before the last election, David Hulchanski, a University of Toronto professor, showed the city dividing into three – with family incomes rising in the wealthy core and poverty pushed to the less expensive edges.

The number of Toronto’s predominately middleincome neighbourhoods, which made up 63 per cent of the city in 1970 and only 23 per cent in 2010, continues to shrink, Hulchanski reported recently. “This is evidence of the growing income polarization of the city between very high income neighbourhoods and very low income neighbourhoods.”

Chow has referenced Hulchanski’s work, saying parts of the city – in which 29 per cent of children live below the poverty line – have been “left behind” and their residents need to matter more.

She seems to argue the

subway-building approach of Tory and the Fords is too narrowly focused, picking “which neighbourhoods succeed, and which don’t.”

Since the violent summer of 2005, the city government built community social service hubs and other resources in “priority neighbourhoods” within the inner suburbs.

Toronto councillors continued the strategy this year, but switched focus to some new neighbourhoods and adopted a new system for measuring success. They also dropped the “priority” label for another – “neighbourhood improvement areas” – they thought was more politically acceptable to residents worried it produced a stigma.

These “poor areas” were never treated as the city’s “priority,” so a division between them and the rest of Toronto remains, said Antonius Clarke, who in 2010 ran unsuccessfully for councillor in North York’s Ward 8.

Scarborough man charged with murder after shooting in Clinton The OPP has arrested a 70-year-old Scarborough man wanted in a Canadawide warrant for the murder of Etobicoke construction executive Donato Frigo.

Boris Panovski was arrested “without incident” Sunday at Pearson International Airport as he re-entered Canada, the OPP said in a news release Monday morning.

He was charged with firstdegree murder and attempted murder.

Frigo was vice-president of Hady Construction Inc. of Etobicoke.

Frigo and Willer are credited with preserving the sport of field trials for pointer dogs, where dogs chase down birds and are rated. The couple was doing the sport when the shooting occurred.

Home searched Police searched Panovski’s home Wednesday night where they located and seized a number of item now at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in downtown Toronto, OPP Det.-Sgt. Dave Truax, director of OPP criminal investigation services, told reporters Friday.

That led to the manhunt, and to police asking the public’s help in locating Panovski, who Truax said was considered armed and dangerous.

“Don was a consummate gentleman, both on and off the trial grounds. His contribution to the OBDCA (Ontario Bird Dog and Conservation Association) is immeasurable.

As such, his absence will be felt both on a personal and a professional level.”

Give your bathroom a fall facelift Bathroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value. The popularity of bathroom renovations and their ability to transform a space has left many homeowners wondering if there are any easy and affordable ways to change the look of their bathrooms.

While “easy” is a relative term, there are ways homeowners willing to make certain concessions can keep the work and cost of a bathroom renovation to a minimum.

Resurface When possible, covering up what you have in the bathroom is much less expensive and less labor-intensive than tearing out existing fixtures and floors and replacing them anew.

Resurfacing can extend to refinishing bathtubs to installing shower liners.

Those who have unsightly walls or wallpaper that they’re just not ready

to remove may consider using wainscotting to cover a portion of the room or even tiling entire walls.

It is important to note that resurfacing and covering up items in the bathroom should only be reserved for cosmetic fixes. If something needs to be replaced because it is damaged or mildew-covered, then covering it up is only hiding the problem and asking for more work in the long run.

Scale back on materials One way to save money on a bathroom renovation project is to choose less expensive materials. For example, you may not need to install travertine or marble flooring in a space where less expensive flooring like vinyl is adequate. Advancements in vinyl flooring have enabled this affordable material to mimic the look of more expensive materials at a fraction of the cost.

When redoing tile on walls and

shower enclosures, many domestically-produced tiles rival the looks of more expensive imported alternatives. You may be able to save more by buying tile in bulk and using the remainder in other applications around the house.

Paint Do not underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint on any room in the house, including the bathroom.

Dark, small spaces can be made to look more expansive with lighter colors. Cavernous bathrooms that look empty may prove more inviting with darker hues. Pick a paint that is designed for bathroom application so that it will inhibit the growth of mold and mildew.

Update hardware A new faucet or some new cabinet pulls can make the room look new and fresh without breaking the bank.

Match finishes throughout the bathroom so everything will be cohesive.

When shopping for a new shower head, choose a model that also conserves water. This way you will be making cosmetic and energy-saving renovations at the same time.

There are a number of ways to make

bathroom renovations a bit easier and more affordable. Even nominal changes can give the space an entirely different look and feel, which can make the room more enjoyable and help improve a home’s resale value in the process.

Paralympians Victoria Nolan and Josh Dueck visited Sloane Public School last Thursday to launch a resource available for elementary school teachers across Canada to make physical education classes inclusive for children of all abilities.

It’s something Nolan, who is the co-author of the Paralympic

FUNdamentals resource program, said she wished existed when she grew up visually impaired.

“As a child, I wasn’t able to participate in sports,” said Nolan, recalling that she often practised on her own in the hallway. “I just thought it was something I couldn’t do. As I got older, my self-esteem started to plummet.”

But then she heard about Brian McKeever, a visually impaired skier who won two gold medals in the 2006 Paralympic Games in Torino, and decided to give para-rowing a try.

“It really brought me back to life,” said Nolan, who com-

Now she’s hoping children, both able-bodied and with disabilities, can participate in sports activities together aided by the physical literacy resource she wrote with Stephanie Bowerman, a York University course director specializing in adapted physical activity.

The Canadian Paralympic Committee along with Physical and Health Education Canada unveiled the resource at the North York school, which was one of 42 schools that has participated in the pilot project for the past year.

“It was super easy to follow,” said Beth Ritchie, a teacher at Sloane, who used the resource for the past year and taught her students to play a variety of inclusive sports activities including boccia, sitting volleyball and goalball.

She added it helped to level the playing field as all the students gained confidence while participating in new sports and learning more about the Paralympics.

Dueck, a three-time Paralympic medallist in paraalpine skiing in Sochi 2014 and Vancouver 2010, enforced to the children that being physically active is important to everybody.

“I’m just a big kid who does everything he can to do as much as possible,” he said. “I love to be active. I love to be outside. I love to be with my friends.”

Grade 5 students Agaash Jeychandran and Eden Yang said they both learned a lot from playing different parasports.

“You had to do everything as a team to accomplish your goal,” Eden said.

Agaash said he learned to not give up.

“Try your best and go with the flow,” he said. “If you’re not that good at it, try, try and try again.”

EQAO results: reading and writing improving, math more of a challenge While grades 3 and 6 students showed improvements in reading and writing, the recent Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) results showed mathematics proved to be more of a challenge.

The EQAO results released last week have shown the percentage of Grade 3 students who performed at or above the provincial standard

increased by 11 per cent in reading (from 60 to 71 per cent), and by 10 per cent in writing (from 70 to 80 per cent) over the past five years.

The Grade 6 students showed similar improvement in reading (eight per cent increase in reading from 69 to 77 per cent) and in writing (10 per cent increase from 70 to 80 per cent).

“Students and staff should

be proud of these results. We have set ambitious goals because we know that our students can achieve great things when we believe in their success,” said Donna Quan, TDSB director of education, in a statement.

In the same five-year period, the EQAO results showed Grade 3 students remained the same in math (71 per cent), while the Grade

6 students who performed at or above the provincial standard decreased by four per cent (from 63 to 59 per cent).

A statement from the TDSB said EQAO data will continue to be used to develop initiatives that support the success of every student.

It further noted the TDSB Years of Action plan has set “an ambitious goal of increasing provincial literacy and

numeracy achievement results by 10 per cent for grades 3 and 6. It also provides important insight into where programs may need to be strengthened and/ or resources directed,” the statement read, highlighting initiatives that are already in place including the new TDSB math strategy (http:// www.tdsb.on.ca/HighSchool/ YourSchoolDay/Curriculum/

Mathematics.aspx). These essential results speak to improvement, as well as guide us as we continue to pursue increased achievement by creating the right programs and initiatives to help all TDSB students succeed,” said chair Mari Rutka.

To facilitate community input into the planning, development and implementation of accessible transit, the Toronto Transit Commission relies on the TTC Advisory Committee on Accessible Transit (ACAT).

Its role is to represent the needs and concerns of people with disabilities and seniors who use the TTC. It provides guidance and policy advice to the Commission on issues pertaining to the ways and means of improving fixed route (i.e., TTC bus, subway, and streetcar) and Wheel-Trans services.

Five (5) volunteer positions on the committee are open to residents of the City of Toronto who have disabilities, as well as, seniors or others who have a knowledge of and an interest in accessible transportation issues. Applicants must be willing to make a commitment of a minimum of 7 hours per week, to attend meetings normally held during regular business hours.

Interested applicants must attend one of the information sessions at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West, to obtain more information about the committee and its function. Sessions will be held in Committee Room 1 on Wednesday, October 1st, 2014 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, and on Thursday, October 2nd, 2014 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Application forms will be distributed only to attendees after the seminars.

Lack of school field trips taking toll on attractions MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com School field trips have become less common at some large Toronto attractions.

Toronto’s school boards said they don’t track field trips or destinations, but staff at the Toronto Zoo and Ontario Science Centre agreed numbers for such visits have been falling steadily since 2008.

The problem is so significant the zoo, science centre, Art Gallery of Ontario and Royal Ontario Museum formed a working group to try to reverse the trend, Heather House, the zoo’s education manager, told a meeting of its management board recently.

The zoo saw its first increase in school visits last year since 2008, but House said the decline beforehand was common across North America, due partly to school

budget restrictions, rising transportation costs, more demand on bus companies and more paperwork.

The Toronto District School Board had 38,000 fewer students in 2011 than in 2001 and the city’s elementary student population is expected to reach a low point in 2015, with a secondary-student-level low in 2019 or 2020, she said.

Teachers, who make most decisions on where class trips go, face more pressure to cover curriculum and prepare students for standardized tests.

The zoo, which gets 10 per cent of its attendance and six per cent of admission revenues from field trips, charges $8 for elementary students and $9 for secondary students, while the science centre charges $6, the ROM $8 and the AGO $10.

years – House said the giant panda exhibit certainly helped – it understands the price of transportation can put many such visits out of reach.

“Teachers are complaining about how much it costs to get their students out here,” said Peter Simpson, the zoo’s business development officer.

Michael Ho, a zoo board member, said going into schools seems more cost effective as a promotional tool than bringing classes to the zoo. Hosting school assemblies is “a marketer’s dream,” he said.

“We know if we put a dollar in, we get $10 back.”

Zoo staff will report on prospects for sponsorships and on outreach visits for schools early next year, the board decided at its meeting.

In a week long effort to capture a sick coyote wandering south Scarborough neighbourhoods, the Ministry of Natural Resources along with the Toronto Wildlife Centre caught the animal last Friday.

Executive Director Nathalie Karvonen from the Toronto Wildlife Centre, a registered charity for animals said their rescue team was on an eight hour pursuit yesterday, but

failed to capture him. They were back on scene early this morning tracking the coyote’s movement.

Fornutately, the coyote was successfully tranquilized by the MNR this afternoon and contained by the TWC Rescue team which brought the animal back to TWC for treatment. Depending on how sick the coyote is the TWC eventually plans to release the animal back into the wild.

U of T student seeks help mapping Toronto’s trees JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With an estimated 10 million trees in the City of Toronto, University of Toronto postdoctoral fellow Mathew Brown’s goal of mapping out each and every one of them is certainly a tall task.

Brown has created a website that aims to locate and identify each and every tree within the confines of the city, something he said was prompted in part by a push by Mayor Rob Ford to cut into Toronto’s tree planting budget.

“He didn’t seem to know the value of trees,” he said.

The City of Toronto has a tree database, but Brown said he believed it to be out of date and outright inaccurate in many cases.

When he posted his website on popular news aggregate website

Reddit, using the city’s tree database as a starting point, those suspicions were confirmed.

“Right away, I started getting quite a few comments and quite a few emails,” he said.

“A lot of people started noticing the tree database isn’t correct and my site allows them to move trees or change trees to the right species.”

Brown borrowed the computer code for his project from a tree map in Oakland, California, and has mapped more than half a million of the city’s trees.

The city’s tree canopy has been altered greatly in recent years, not just due to new plantings but also due to trees being felled by last win-

ter’s ice storm, beetle infestations and age.

“By using crowd sourcing, it’s a good way to keep track of the changes that have happened and that continue to happen,” Brown said.

He is urging the public to check out the map and move trees that are located in the wrong spot. He will soon add features allowing the public to remove or re-label trees to properly identify them, and to add private trees to the map.

Doing so will take but a minute of a user’s time, though users will have to sign up to use the site and data added or changed will be tracked to ensure the database remains accurate.

Brown knows the value of a good tree canopy.

He lives near Kew Gardens in the Beach and notices the stark contrast between the neighbourhood he calls home and the downtown core he frequents as a U of T student.

“I think the nicest, oldest trees in the city are in (the Beach) but when you go downtown, it’s very urban – there’s a lot of concrete,” he said.

HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Designed to mirror the original lake bluff that contributed to Fort York’s natural defences from the 1790s to the 1880s, the new 27,400 square-foot Fort York Visitor Centre was made to honour the past.

“We resolved to design a building that was more like a piece of landscape architecture and together with the research of the historic evolution of the site, we found this was the original line of Lake Ontario,” said Jonathan Kearns, one of the lead architects who designed the visitor centre.

“It was featured very strongly in the battle of 1813 when the fort was attacked by the Americans and was blown up by the British in their retreat, so we tried to remind people of the history.”

Located in the concrete canopy of the Gardiner Expressway, the new $18-million Fort York Visitor Centre officially opened Friday.

The opening ceremonies

included a speech by Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly, Elder Garry Sault from the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation and the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario David C. Onley.

T h e n e w c e n t re w a s designed by Patkau Architects Inc of Vancouver and Kearns Mancini Architects Inc. of Toronto – the pair’s design was selected in an international competition in 2009.

Mimics escarpment The 900-foot linear building has large rusted steel panels designed to mimic the natural lake escarpment that sat there two centuries ago, when it was initially located on the original shoreline of Lake Ontario.

Now 500 metres from the shoreline the new visitor centre boasts information services, exhibition galleries, spaces for meetings and a café. Administrative offices will also be in the centre after it’s been relocated from Fort York’s historic structures.

Visitors are also able to walk on the roof, once fully

completed, and look out onto Fort York Boulevard as if they themselves were in a trench during a battle in the 1800s, said Kearns.

There will be five new exhibits available for the public to check see upon entering from Fort York Boulevard, including: Charles Patcher’s 1812: The Art of War. This exhibit has 14 donated works from the Toronto artist’s collection which has a pop art perspective on conflict.

There’s also The Great War - in Your Cellar, Closet or Storage Locker. Located in the main lobby of the centre, this exhibit was created to help Torontonians better understand their connection to the war, according to Wayne Reeves, the chief curator of museums and heritage services for the City of Toronto. “We’ve brought out some of the most typical objects, medals, badges, papers, photographs that will help visitors understand their heirlooms,” he said.

THE OPPORTUNITY Metroland Media requires a Traffic Coordinator for its Metroland Media Toronto location reporting to the Trucking Supervisor, this position will directly oversee the loading/traffic operation as well as have involvement in other areas of the distribution operation.

Position Responsibilities: • You will be responsible for the work flow process through monitoring independent contract drivers entering and exiting the facility. Maintaining loading schedules & coordinating the delivery and removal of product flow • You will maintain consistent work flow by ensuring product is prepped for shipping in a safe, timely manner.

• Provide clear, concise communication to employees and contractors on operational policies and procedures, taking necessary action as required.

• Responsible for overseeing the loading staff and assisting the staging area as needed.
