MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Scarborough-Rouge River MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan and Markham Councillor Logan Kanapathi both say they want to run in the new federal riding of Scarborough North in 2015. Sitsabaisan, a New Democrat, was disappointed when the Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario split her riding along Neilson Road a few weeks ago in a redistribution to give Scarborough six complete federal districts. After consulting with constituents, she announced that she will run in Scarborough North. “Scarborough North is two thirds of my current riding, so looking to the future I want to continue serving as many of the people who put their faith in me in the 2011 election as possible,” Sitsabaisan said in >>>sitting, page 12

Local councillor furious after mayor’s robocalls in ward Mayor Rob Ford’s robocalls to residents of Ward 43 to talk about local councillor Paul Ainslie’s vote on the Scarborough subway were the acts of “a bully and a liar” according to the councillor. But Ford said making those calls was simply “leadership,” and dismissed Ainslie’s complaints as “ridiculous.” “This is ridiculous — I don’t know what he’s hiding from,” said Ford Tuesday afternoon, following Ainslie’s statement. “I just told people how he voted. That’s it! There’s no more, no less. I didn’t get personal.” Ford paid “a couple of hun-

dred dollars” for the robocalls, which went out hours after Ainslie had resigned from Ford’s executive committee following the vote to raise property taxes and go ahead with a $3.2 billion subway to replace the Scarborough Rapid Transit line. Ainslie had moved a motion to scrap the subway last week, and Ford called him out on it on the floor of council, demanding to know why he was voting against the will of Scarborough residents and suggesting he’d pay for it in the next election. Ainslie said he would be contacting the city’s integrity commissioner to lodge a formal complaint. “I’m here to start the fight back against a bully and a

liar,” said Ainslie in a prepared statement he read to reporters in council’s member’s lounge Tuesday morning. “I’m here to say enough is enough with this mayor who thinks he can get away with anything by twisting the truth, saying just some of the truth or not telling it straight at all. For those who will shrug and say ‘Well that’s just politics’ I say they’re dead wrong and just lying to themselves.” Ainslie’s constituents began receiving calls with a recorded voice claiming to be Rob Ford and criticizing Ainslie’s vote and accusing him of “leading the charge” against subways in Scarborough. Ainslie said that accusation is inaccurate. “I didn’t as he says lead a charge against sub-

ways in Scarborough; what I did was lead a charge against a tax hike and no financial clarity,” said Ainslie, who had argued that the $3.2 billion subway extension would require more than a billion dollars from city coffers, putting the city deeper into debt and requiring unaffordable tax increases for residents. “It’s the mayor who caved, not me,” said Ainslie. “It’s the mayor who is now doing what he always does when he doesn’t want to be caught out or be truthful; he’s just using his bully pulpit to find a scapegoat for his own failings here at council or out on the street.” Ainslie said that he had supported Ford’s agenda earlier in the term, and had

supported the subway as recently as July, but when it became clear to him how much of a financial risk the subway was going to be, he backed away. “The subway and whether it is needed has never been an issue,” he said. “How it will be funded is. I’ve always resisted new taxes for an overtaxed city – and that was the appeal of the agenda many people supported in electing Mayor Ford in the last election. Tossing that position aside is just cynical politics – which is a fun game when you don’t have to pay the bills.” Ainslie said that when he resigned from the executive committee, Mayor Ford “looked me in the eye and said he respected me and

looked forward to us being friends for a long time to come. “Just three short hours later he carpet-bombed Scarborough residents with a robocall telling them I’d voted against subways. He went on CFRB with his brother on the weekend and, unopposed, ranted over my position and said all he was doing was letting constituents know my voting record,” said Ainslie. “We all know here what it was: a blatant act of political thuggery the type of which has never been witnessed before: robocalls using the mayor’s phone number and his own voice.”

Make a difference for the homeless

W

ith colder weather approaching, the needs of the homeless in our city will come into sharper focus and there’s a new initiative underway that allows local residents, business, religious groups and social service agencies to coordinate the ways they can help. Homeless Connect Toronto is a branch of the North America-wide Project Homeless Connect which aims to improve the access the homeless have to the services and programs they need. The 2013 Street Needs Assessment interim report, which was released by the City of Toronto this summer, estimated the number of homeless at 5,219. While those numbers represent an increase of only about one per cent from the last survey in 2009, all Torontonians should be concerned that so many of our fellow citizens have no place to call home. It’s important to note that 76.1 per cent of those surveyed by the city on the night our view of April 17 were recorded as taking refuge in city-administered homeless shelters. Approximately 8.6 Homeless per cent were sleeping outdoors, Connect has according to the report. Perhaps the bright spot in the great potential report’s numbers is that the large percentage of homeless in shelters are at least within the reach of social service agencies and programs. Which is why an initiative like Homeless Connect Toronto has the potential to do a lot of good. Homeless Connect plans to bring together support services in fields such as housing, employment, health care, and clothing in one place, for those in need to access and learn more about what is available to them. The organization is planning an event at the Harbourfront Community Centre on April 13 of next year, and is now looking for sponsors and service providers to get involved. The local business community can help with sponsorships, covering the costs of getting the word out in the homeless community, and making those in need aware of potential job openings. Homelessness is far from a downtown issue in Toronto. There are shelters in neighbourhoods around the city. Local residents can take advantage of what Homeless Connect is doing by finding out the ways they can help, and by connecting to service agencies and programs in need of volunteers. For more info on Homeless Connect Toronto, visit www.hctoronto.org

Subway debate finished? Not a chance

S

o is it over? After Council’s 24-20 vote in favour of a subway extension over LRT, after the mayor’s consent to tax increases totaling 1.6 per cent, and the federal government’s $660 million promise for the new line, is the debate finished? Not a chance. This is an issue that’s too good to resolve. The mayor‘s position is the easiest to understand. Recent published polls show that his base strongly favours what is called the Scarborough subway. That residents in the former cities of Toronto and East York disapprove doesn’t matter. In terms of the Mayor’s seemingly perpetual campaign, it was an easy decision to target the one Scarborough councillor who voted against him, and so extend the life of the issue. Nor did council’s decision conclude matters for

david soknacki beyond the headlines the provincial government. Although the Queen’s Park recommended one route and is paying most of the bills, council drew its own line on the map plus asked for more money. In turn the minister responsible for transit advised that the province now expects detailed assessments for both routes – a decision that will add two years before construction begins. Queen’s Park wants the decision delayed for much the same reason as the mayor. The governing Liberals realize that being recognized as a subway champion will assist them in this spring’s provincial election, just as it helped retain their seat in Scarborough during a recent by-election. As long as what passes

for debate remains at the level of emotional election slogans, building that subway extension will be as protracted and acrimonious as possible, simply because that is in the interests of both the mayor and provincial government. another view For another view, take a look at the last poll results. When asked to compare a two or three-stop subway with a seven-stop LRT, the LRT was considered to be more appropriate. What about Scarborough residents? They preferred the LRT by a ratio of two to one. All of which was completed before revised costs were recalculated: from about $200 million per subway stop at the time of the Sheppard Line, to over double per stop for the route into Vaughan, and now over double again in Scarborough. It is as if cost, ridership,

or planning considerations do not matter. Success in Scarborough led the mayor to consider reprioritizing transit citywide within a week of his victory. “To be fair,” he said, “the downtown people have enough subways already.” Next he targeted the already funded LRT projects on Sheppard and Finch, saying “Obviously the next election is going to be fought again on subways ... I want to connect McCowan to Don Mills — just do the Sheppard Line — then I’m going to go to Finch and look at the Downtown Relief line.” As long as residents accept caricatures as truth, then politicians will endlessly re-open decisions, and policy will be taken down dangerous paths.

Scarborough Theatre Guild opens season with Sherlock Holmes Play begins as a ghost hunt and becomes a murder mystery as everyone tries to solve the case MARIA TZAVARAS scm@insidetoronto.com

W

hen there is a murder, there is no better detective to solve the case than the famous Sherlock Holmes. The Scarborough Theatre Guild’s first production of the season, The Reluctant Resurrection of Sherlock Holmes by David Belke, begins as a ghost hunt that turns into a murder mystery and a battle of logic and wit in an attempt to solve the case. When a ghostly presence disrupts the household at Baffleur Grange, the manor of Desmond and Abigail Westhaven (Gregory Hertel, Karen Brown) and their daughter Rose ( Julie Costen), Desmond calls on Arthur Conan Doyle (Len Henderson) to help with the haunting that has caused most of their staff to leave in fear. Doyle, a doctor, is also the famed author of the most beloved detective of the literary world, Sherlock Holmes (Damien Gulde), and once

he arrives at the manor, so does Mr. Holmes. The twist is that only Doyle can see Sherlock, despite having “killed him off” in a story two years earlier. And while Doyle is set on investigating the paranormal and figuring out who the ghost is, the ever logical Holmes challenges him to think rationally and seek out the logical explanation to the so-called ghost.

Details

n The Reluctant Resurrection of Sherlock Holmes runs until Oct. 26, at 8 p.m. n Matinees at 2 p.m. on Oct. 20 and 26, n Scarborough Village Theatre is at 3600 Kingston Rd. n General admission tickets are $20. n Call 416-267-9292 or visit www.theatrescarborough.com

linked To complicate matters, the body of one of the Westhaven’s former maids is found in the nearby channel, proving to Holmes that the ghost and murder are linked, leaving the two men to join together to uncover the truth. While the primary story is about a ghost and a murder, the secondary story revolves around the relationship between Doyle and Holmes. The relationship is a double-edged sword for Doyle because while Holmes made him famous, it’s also the char-

acter he loathes the most. This contempt and conflict makes for some intense and some of the more interesting scenes in this show. This story has all the elements for an intriguing whodunit. Amongst the sleuthing there are also comedic moments, secret love affairs and plot twists that will keep you guessing. The set is beautiful and depicts the interior of the manor where the story takes place. The lighting and eerie sound effects are amazing,

The cast of characters ranged from the dramatic (Mr. Westhaven, played convincingly by Hertel, is a retired actor and takes every opportunity to practice his craft) to the serious; the butler Robert Scrimshaw (David Borwick), an intensely creepy role played amazingly by Borwick. Great performances are given by Chris Mrkonjic, who plays groundskeeper Tomas, and Costen as the lovesick Rose. She and Tomas are having a secret affair and their addic-

tion to passion provides the muchneeded comedy in this show. Brown is polished and delightfully deceitful as the practical and logical Abigail, and Gulde is also polished and believable as the infamous and beloved mystery solver, Sherlock Holmes. He manages to nail the mannerisms and blunt honesty of the beloved detective. This show is an entertaining look into the mind of Sherlock Holmes and those who are a fan of the genre will particularly enjoy it. A surprise ending makes this a great opening show for the Guild’s new season. Susan Brickell, left, Kingsley Kwok, Natalie Mehrra, Dianne Brunton and Tina Belgaumkarhelp launch the Ontario Health Coalition campaign against service cuts at Scarborough hospitals, on Tuesday at McGregor Park Community Recreation Centre.

Community needs to stand up: coalition >>>from page 1 Association president at TSH, said Tuesday during the launch of a campaign to stop hospital service cuts in Scarborough and Ajax. “I don’t know about you, but I can’t put a dollar figure on my health care needs.” The group, which revived a dormant local chapter called the Scarborough Health Coalition, declared the area faces “the largest hospital cuts in Ontario at this time,” and announced public meetings members hope will build a movement for adequate funding. The first, which will deal with specific concerns of the Caribbean community, will be at Malvern Recreation Centre next Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 7 and 9 p.m. and lists leading Caribbean carnival band leader Louis Saldenah among its scheduled speakers. Another meeting for union members will be at Birkdale Community Centre on Oct. 28 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., and more gatherings may be scheduled before the coalition holds a “day of action” including demonstrations at offices of Scarborough MPPs on Nov. 9. Brickell and others in the

group say cuts at the hospitals have already cost jobs, closed operating rooms, removed beds and made patients wait longer for surgeries. Hospital mergers “don’t generally save money,” said Natalie Mehra of the Ontario Health Coalition. She said during the campaign launch at McGregor Community Recreation Centre that the Scarborough hospitals are “just really pawns” in a game of hospital restructuring that “has taken on a life of its own.” The provincial government is forcing that restructuring by freezing funding for hospitals, which needs to keep pace with inflation and Ontario’s aging population, Mehra said. When the community stands up and refuses to accept service cuts, they generally win more funding for their hospitals, she added. The Scarborough hospitals have said themselves they won’t have funds to cover rising expenses amounting to $28.4 million in the 20142015 fiscal year, and projected they will need to trim another $19.6 million the following year. For the past year, CEOs of

TSH and RVHS have repeatedly warned restructuring and other major changes in how health care services in Scarborough are delivered are inevitable. Ganderton to retire wRVHS’

Rouge Valley Health System CEO Rik Ganderton has announced his retirement just as his hospital in Scarborough and West Durham approaches a possible merger with The Scarborough Hospital. Joan Wideman, chairperson of the RVHS board, said Ganderton “has committed to stay with us until at least the end of January” and added the board has struck a committee to lead the transition in leadership. “This was a difficult decision. I am proud to have served as RVHS’ president and CEO for almost seven years, and I believe as a team we have made great progress in developing RVHS into a high performing hospital,” Ganderton said in a release issued late yesterday afternoon.

ing Tuesday. He’s taking the matter to the city’s integrity commissioner. He called Mayor Ford a liar over his characterization of the subway and called the whole robocall adventure “a blatant act of political thuggery.” Strong, brave words. It’s a shame that he couldn’t have found them sooner. Ainslie was absolutely right to raise questions about the financial realities surrounding the subway plan. Yet as recently as July, Ainslie supported moving along with that plan – despite the fact that many of the same funding problems existed then as now. Now it’s off to the integrity commissioner. While that sorts itself out, we might show a little understanding about the vehemence with which Ainslie directs his rhetoric toward his former friend the mayor. As breakups go, this is an ugly one.

branch cuts in the 2011 budget. And when it came time to replace Ford’s budget chief Mike Del Grande, Ainslie – an experienced budget committee member – was passed over in favour of budget neophite Frank Di Giorgio. On the other side of the equation, Ainslie wasn’t afraid to go on the record to the Toronto Star when they were investigating allegations that the mayor had shown up appearing to be intoxicated for the annual Garrison Ball. Ainslie said those allegations were true. So Mayor Ford took to the telephone lines, on his own dime, to tell Ainslie’s constituents that it was “extremely, extremely unfortunate” that Ainslie “did not listen to his constituents,” and “led the charge” against the subway in Scarborough. Ainslie came out swing-

One might even say it went over the top in its aggression, straight on to intimidation and bullying, or to use Councillor Ainslie’s words, “thuggery.” But it’s really not surprising. Never mind Mayor Ford’s generally pugilistic modus operandi when it comes to local, retail politics. Never mind that Ainslie had broken with the mayor on his vision for a subway-atall-costs for Scarborough residents. The two hadn’t seen eye to eye really since the beginning of the term. Ainslie started out, installed as the chair of the Toronto Public Library Board, where he did his best to implement the mayor’s early-term cost-cutting agenda – ultimately getting caught up with the mayor’s office in the stumble over

Sitting MP and Markham councillor interested in riding >>>from page 1 a release. Kanapathi, another prominent Tamil-Canadian politician, declared his intention a few days earlier to seek the nomination for Scarborough

North as a Liberal. Though a Markham politician, Kanapathi said he lived in Scarborough for more than 15 years and served on Liberal associations and campaigns there, besides doing anti-gang

work with local youth and families. “Scarborough was my first home, where I started community service along with my brothers and friends,” he said in a statement last

week, adding “the community and community leaders have been asking (me) to run for the federal parliament for a long time.” Scarborough North will combine part of what is now Scarborough-Rouge River west of Neilson and Morningside Avenue to the east-west power line, and then west of the Rouge River, with a former part of

Scarborough-Agincourt east of Midland Avenue. Scarborough-Rouge River runs along the Pickering boundary from Steeles Avenue to Lake Ontario, and on its west side from Morningside to Hwy. 401 as far as Neilson, and then east along the power line and north along the Rouge River to Steeles. The splitting of PickeringScarborough East into

Scarborough-Rouge River and Pickering-Uxbridge in Durham Region gives MP Corneliu Chisu the choice of running as an incumbent in either riding. A spokesperson in his office said that Chisu hasn’t yet made a decision on which riding he will run in.

the mirror takes a closer look at rebuilding of playground destroyed by arson

our exclusive look

Children scramble on to the equipment at Mary Shadd Public School on Tuesday afternoon following the official opening ceremony for the new kindergarten playground. The original site had been burned down in an arson incident in May. Donations from a number of businesses helped to cover the cost of the new playground.

ith song and smiles, Scarborough schoolchildren thanked the community and corporations for rebuilding their playground. The kindergarten playscape at Mary Shadd Public School was destroyed by arson on May 6. But news of the blaze led to an outpouring of support, and within 48 hours more than $75,000 was raised. The brand new playground was opened Tuesday following a ceremony in which students thanked donors with a song. “To see the smiles on the kids’ faces is truly warming,” school trustee Shaun Chen said as children enjoyed the playground for the first time. “It just shows really how the community can come together and make a difference.”

The original playground was a labour of love: parents had spent five years raising the $20,000 needed for the project. Longtime kindergarten teacher Jackie Madden said “it was a dream come true” when the structure was built in August 2012. “When we had the fire, it was devastating,” she said. devastating “It was devastating to myself, the children, mainly because we just didn’t know how to explain it to them. But because of this community my faith in humanity was restored almost immediately.” The day after the fire, Chen happened to be on the radio for an interview on the school board budget. He mentioned the fire. “Since that announcement, it just became viral,” he said. A total of $78,111 was raised,

including $20,000 from Canadian Tire, $20,000 from Kids in Sports Foundation, $18,500 from Vienna Roofing, $10,000 from TD Bank, $5,000 from CUPE 4400 and $1,800 from Tom’s Place. success story “It’s a wonderful success story,” said Chen, noting he’s never before seen “this type of outpouring.” The new playground cost just over $25,000. The remainder of the donated money will go to upgrading an aging playground at the back of the school. David Williams, the school’s new principal, said he hopes the upgrades will be made within a year. “It’s important to consult with the kids, with the parent council, with the community, so we want to make sure that we get it right.” School council co-chair Aqueel Anwar said the smiles shared by the

kids on the kindergarten playground will “wash away the tears” shed on the day of the fire. Three males, ages 17 to 19, were arrested and charged with arson causing damage to property on May 19. At the time of the arrests, police believed the teens wanted to have a campfire in the playground but the blaze quickly got out of hand. “They were playing with fire and it backfired on them,” 42 Division Det. Sgt. Mike Stones said at the time. “Their intent was to have a fire, not to cause the damage that they’ve caused.” Mary Shadd, located on Hupfield Trail in Malvern, has 540 students. The school is named after an American-Canadian anti-slavery activist.

Concerns raised over sustainability of aboriginal child care centres MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com

three years ago to run three child cares in the city which would reinforce the identity of aboriginal children and build their self esteem. Since then, two of the facilities have closed and the third, in Scarborough, is in danger of closing soon, Richard said, since by operating it NCFST “is subsidizing the province and city to the tune of $15,000 a month.” The purpose-built child-

Child cares teaching aboriginal children their language and culture are “not sustainable” in Toronto under the current system of rules, says the executive director of Native Child and Family Services of Toronto. In an interview, Kenn Richard said the non-profit agency embraced a mandate

Richard said the agency will try hard to save the facility, since it is a valuable resource for an aboriginal community in Scarborough “which is only destined to grow.” He added, however, that

the childcare is in “extreme jeopardy.” Two others are gone already, though Richard said he holds onto hope they could be reopened. Staff of the city’s Children’s Services department said they consider continued operation of the Galloway Road childcare a priority, and are signing up children and fasttracking applications as quickly as possible to stabilize its enrolment.

The introduction of allday kindergarten at a public s c h o o l d ow n t h e ro a d “drained a lot of kids out of the daycare” at the Native Child and Family Centre, Paul Ainslie, the local councillor, recalled. “I think I can understand the quandary the parents would be in.”

Library meeting discusses impacts of Eglinton LRT on community RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com While many residents support the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project, others like Bob Humphrey want it “killed” before it starts running. The pensioner was part of a passionate group of local residents to take part in a panel discussion co-organized by Metroland Media Toronto at Northern District

Public Library last Thursday, evening. An earlier meeting was held Oct. 3 at the Kennedy/Eglinton library in Scarborough. Humphrey aired his concerns about the planned 19-kilometre rapid transit line to run below and along Eglinton Avenue, between Black Creek Dr ive and Kennedy Station. He was convinced the light rail project will achieve the

opposite of its objective to make transit more accessible – by ushering in condo development and crowding out local residents as a result. “If they build all this stuff on Eglinton, people won’t be able to use transit and will go back to their cars,” said Humphrey, a resident of Glencairn Avenue. “It’s the wrong line in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Several participants were also concerned that not enough is known about the specifics of the plan. One woman said she was worried the city and Metrolinx, the planning agency tasked by the provincial government with delivering the $5-billion dollar project, are not adequately communicating construction plans with residents. “Does anybody know what

Below are Tracy’s healthy lunch box ideas… Halloween-inspired just in time for October 31st!

Letter: Tory blasts w‘politicking’

HE EALLTHY LUNCH BO OX ID DEA AS CONTESTT WIN NNE ER CONGRATULATIONS TO

Tracy Amaral I have three children in school under the age of 9 and they're already complaining about 'boring sandwiches'. Lunch was coming back half eaten so I decided to make funnyface sandwiches last week and they gobbled them up! Ingredients: Two slices of bread, a favourite lunch meat, lettuce, seaweed, cheese slices, eggs, cherry tomatoes, mini carrots and raisins. Add-ons: skewers of cucumbers or grapes, apples cut into jack-o-lanterns, olives on toothpicks My picky kids even ate all their veggies!

In an open letter to Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) elected officials, Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance chair John Tory called for a “laser focus” to transit planning. Tory, who is also a popular radio host, released the letter as city council debated whether to jettison a fullyfunded LRT plan and raise property taxes to fund a three-stop Scarborough subway extension instead. Transit planning is in jeopardy due to “short-term decision-making and politicking”, writes Tory. “The result has been decades of cancelled projects, incomplete facts, and failed accountability.” work impacts streetcar service wTrack

Track and platform work will require replacement buses for west-end streetcar service late into December, the TTC announced. Starting Sunday, both 501 Queen and 508 Lakeshore streetcar routes will have buses running between Long Branch and the

Buses will also replace 505 Dundas streetcars between Lansdowne Avenue and Dundas West station, as well as on the 506 Carlton route between Lansdowne and Keele Station. Paeans to Toronto from the pint-sized will appear on subway video screens until the end of the week. Dear Toronto features excerpts from love letters written by children submitted during Harbourfront Centre’s Thanksgiving Day Festival, via the centre’s HarbourKIDS program. Until Oct. 20, the Pattison Onestop subway screen network will display Tweets from @HarbourKIDS excerpting letters, which all begin with “Dear Toronto”, followed by a brief sentence explaining what the children love about the city.

A west-end neighbourhod group has organized a phone-in campaign targeted at the Ontario Minister of Transportation to stop construction of 16-foot tall noise barrier walls along the GO Georgetown South rail corridor. The Junction Triangle Rail Committee is asking residents to call Glen Murray’s office daily at 416-327-9200 and request he arrange to meet with members of the group and a commissioned architectural firm to discuss an alternative design for the walls. Metrolinx intends to construct the noise walls, to mitigate the effect of increased diesel train traffic, before the Union-Pearson Express air rail link opens in 2015.

Five home-selling tips for low season While it's true that the bulk of home sales generally take place in the spring and summer, fall and winter can also be a fruitful time to sell. Families with school-aged children often prefer to be in their new homes before September, making spring or summer the best seasons to attract these buyers, however; other types of buyers are shopping for homes during fall and winter. Job relocations or personal life changes or buyers scaling up or down can create opportunities outside the traditional spring and summer markets. The following tips for can help when it comes to listing your home through the cooler months: 1. Choose bright interior lighting. It is important to make your home appear warm and inviting to potential buyers. Consider replacing 40-watt bulbs with more luminous options and open drapes and blinds to let the sun shine in.

Optimum Service & Outstanding Results! Mary Jane

2. Limit personalized holiday décor. Potential home buyers want to picture themselves in your home. While it is acceptable to decorate for the holidays, personal items and memorabilia should be kept to a minimum. 3. Use snow-free pictures in your listing. If possible, have your listing photos taken before the first snowfall. This will give potential buyers a better picture of your home's exterior. 4. Keep your home warm during showings. Set the thermostat at a comfortable level or consider asking your realtor to turn on your gas fireplace for a showing. 5. Shovel and salt your walkways and driveway. In doing so, you make your home more accessible, increase curb appeal and show potential buyers that your home is well-maintained and cared for. There are plenty of opportunities to sell even when the peak real estate season ends. – newscanada.com

What is a preventive mastectomy? People around the world were shocked to learn that actress Angelina Jolie opted to have a double mastectomy in 2013 to reduce her risk of breast cancer. Jolie, who was 37 years old at the time of the procedure, reportedly learned that she carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. In addition, the actress has a family history of cancer. Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56. By having a preventive mastectomy, Jolie reduced her breast cancer risk from 87 percent to 5 percent, according to an op-ed piece she authored in The New York Times. Jolie is not the only well-known actress to opt for a preventive mastectomy, as fellow thespian Christina Applegate had a similar procedure in 2008 after learning she had a mutation of the BRCA1 gene. These highly publicized cases have left many women wondering if a preventive mastectomy is something they should consider. BRCA stands for "breast cancer susceptibility genes," a class of genes known as tumor suppressors, says the National Cancer Institute. Mutations in these

Genetic tests can check for mutations in BRCAgenes. During such a test, a blood sample is taken, and if a mutation is found, a person may get genetic counseling and work with a doctor to develop a plan of action. It is important to note that not all people with a genetic mutation will get breast cancer or ovarian cancer. The National Cancer Institute's "SEER Cancer Statistic Review" states a woman

who has inherited a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 is about five times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who does not have such a mutation. Although there is no surefire way to determine if a person with a mutated gene will develop breast cancer, many women who are considered high risk opt for a preventive mastectomy to reduce their risk. Women who have a family history of breast cancer, have received positive results from gene testing, have already had cancer in one breast, or have dense breasts that make testing difficult may want to get a preventive mastectomy. The decision to get a preventive mastectomy is not one to take lightly. Many breast centers are staffed with breasthealth specialists, genetic counselors, breast surgeons, and reconstructive surgeons who can help patients make the best decision. Second opinions are strongly recommended for women considering a preventive mastectomy. Women should understand the options available to them if they have an extremely elevated risk of breast cancer or ovarian cancer. – MS

Johnny and Joan Cowell, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently, met while they were in the same dance band – he on trumpet, her the vocalist. Breaking into an easy banter during an interview at their longtime southeast Scarborough home, they both fondly recall: Joan: “They brought this guy to play in the trumpet section and I always needed a ride home – I didn’t have a car ...” Johnny: “So I got stuck (as both break out chuckling). No, it was a lucky break for me.” Joan: “That was sort of interesting, singing with the band and going out with the trumpet player: I thought that was cool.”

induction into the Scarborough Walk of Fame – that “I stopped writing (pop) songs when Elvis and the Beatles came on the scene, the style itself changed so completely. That’s when I sort of switched over to writing symphonic pops.” Yet, what arguably might be considered his biggest pop hit – Walk Hand in Hand in With Me – became part of the British invasion when Gerry and the Pacemakers recorded it. In the 1950s, the song had been a hit for both Tony Martin and Andy Williams, with the latter version being used, most recently, on the soundtrack for the current British TV series Call the Midwives. Johnny’s on-the-side penchant for writing hit tunes helped the newly married couple, who honeymooned in New York City, establish their roots in Scarborough. The first royalty cheque from Walk Hand in Hand went to purchase their house – which they’ve lived in ever since. “We bought it in 1957 – it was built in 1956,” said Joan. And, yes, she does remember what they paid: “$25,000.” “And those houses across the street were $12,000 to $16,000 – they’re selling for $500,000 now.” As for what has kept them together after 60 years, they once again break into lighthearted banter: Johnny: “We just kind of like each other (both laughing). Joan: “Just got stuck with each other.” Johnny: “No, really, we’ve always been best friends.” Joan: “Johnny has a great sense of humour. I think that means a lot.” The couple have three grandchildren.
