Hospital gala honours Scarborough Walk of Fame inductees The Kaleidoscope Ball will help raise funds for The Scarborough Hospital while also honouring the 2015 inductees into the Scarborough Walk of Fame.

Scarborough’s Second Base Youth Shelter has closed, and the Kennedy Road building housing it for 23 years could soon be sold, the shelter’s volunteer board confirmed this week. “ The board was given approval to look at options for the closure including the sale of the building. TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com The author of a new book highlighting Toronto’s ravines and forests is inviting people to learn about and discuss Scarborough’s green spaces.

Jason Ramsay-Brown, a u t h o r o f “ To r o n t o’s Ravines and Urban Forests, Their Natural Heritage and Local History,” makes two Scarborough stops on his Toronto Library tour. He will be at Albert Campbell Library at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, and Morningside Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Ramsay-Brown’s book features areas throughout the city, including several Scarborough spaces. He recommends the read to anyone who enjoys nature, hiking, birding or history.

Natural treasures Scarborough is filled with natural treasures, he said, adding it was hard to narrow it down for his book.

“There are all kinds of amazing places out there,” he said. “I had to choose ravines from all over the city, and choosing just a handful within Scarborough was very, very challenging, because there are so many great places ... I tried to opt for some of the ones that were a little less well-known, a little more hidden, so that there would be a little bit of a surprise and

delight for the folks out that way.”

Scarborough’s Colonel Danforth Park and Lower Highland Creek Park are a couple areas discussed in the book. Along with pictures and details, it offers colourful background about the city’s green spaces.

“There is a very interesting history in this city that is quite well represented by our ravines,” said RamsayBrown. “Tales of soldiers burying treasure, of smugglers trying to bring in products from America, a wealth and beauty of Aboriginal history dating back thousands of years. Some of the most important geological discov-

eries in North America have happened here. Some of the most important archeological discoveries, at least in the eastern seaboard, have happened here. There’s really a lot of amazing history that I think a lot of people would find very surprising.”

Scarborough lays claim to much of that interesting history. Gates Gully, one of the book’s shining stars, was a smugglers’ den during the 19th century, he noted.

It also boasts a military past, along with tales of buried treasure and the oldest human artifacts found in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Scarborough Bluffs have an incredible history

as well, he added, explaining climatologist A.P. Coleman used their geology to prove the Earth has been through not one, but multiple ice ages.

“The Bluffs remain one of the geological marvels of North America, and an extremely important thing for the international scientific community,” he said. “It is possibly one of the most important geological features in the Greater Toronto Area, so it’s a real prize for the area of Scarborough.”

Along with the Bluffs, he said the abundance of nature in Scarborough makes it a unique part of Toronto.

“Rouge Park is probably the largest green space in Toronto, so having that in Scarborough, it’s truly a jewel out there,” he added.

“It has every bit of an interesting history, but is also potentially one of the most important ecological sites in the whole Greater Toronto Area. Not just due to its size, but due to the inventory of plants and animals.”

He thinks people may be surprised to learn just how much wildlife is hiding in Toronto.

“I think people are used to just looking at it from a perspective of squirrels and raccoons, and they’re not necessarily aware of the true depth and breadth of nature that’s supported here,” he said.

“The hundreds of species of birds, the dozens of species of butterflies, the amazing little creatures like muskrats, and beavers and coyotes – these things that are literally 500 metres away from you when you’re walking down a street.”

Wildlife Gates Gully is a great place to catch a glimpse of Toronto’s hidden creatures, offered Ramsay-Brown, noting he usually sees deer there.

Morningside Park is the place to be if you like seeing the salmon run, and East Point Park, also featured in the book, supplies superb bird and butterfly watching.

The nature that covers onefifth of Toronto sets it apart from major cities around the world, he said, adding he hopes his book will inspire more residents to connect with and protect the city’s natural areas.

“What I hope, is that people will realize what an immense gem we have. In my opinion, these green spaces really are our greatest civic treasure,” he said.

“If the book does one thing, I hope it causes some of us to rethink the role that these places have, and to stop taking them for granted.”

Refugee Care events planned for Scarborough A volunteer clinic in Scarborough is declaring “a Canadian Thanksgiving for Refugee Care” this weekend to respond to a worldwide refugee crisis.

The United Nations says there are 60 million displaced refugees, and Canadians

“have all been gripped by the desire to help,” said The Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care.

The recently opened centre, at 4158 Sheppard Ave. E., offers free medical, dental and other help for refugees

and other people who are uninsured.

Walk, run, cycle It will host a sponsored walk, run and cycling event this Saturday.

But the centre is also asking

residents to have a “living room conversation on this humanitarian crisis,” and organize “any community event of your own” to help provide services at the centre or to settle refugees arriving in Canada.

Saturday’s event begins at

9:30 a.m., and walks, runs, and cycling of five or onekilometre distances start at 10 a.m.

Expand museum plan for Old City Hall Toronto’s story is big enough to take up plenty of space

E

ven in grumpy, contrary, old Toronto, occasionally an obviously good idea emerges that pretty much everyone agrees on. So it is this week, with a multilateral desire to install a City of Toronto Museum in Old City Hall.

No one – not even our grumpiest, most contrary representative, Ward 2’s Rob Ford – spoke any way other than glowingly about the idea of putting a museum inside the grand old building at Bay and Queen streets.

It will have to wait until the provincial government moves its court operation out of there once and for all.

But then, the city will be

david nickle the city free to do with the 160,000 square feet of usable space inside as it sees fit.

The only catch?

Proponents of the museum have done a tally of the material available in the city’s archives and estimate the museum doesn’t really need much more than 30,000 square feet.

Which gives the city the option of looking for other uses for the remaining 130,000 square feet… which of course is exactly what’s happening.

City staff has obtained a report indicating that the remaining space would do well as a sort of shopping mall, leased to a property manager who would fill the place up with rent-paying shops.

Councillor Ford, an enthusiastic supporter of the museum, suggested

the city might want to lease the remaining space to an hotelier, who might also set up a fancy restaurant at the site.

Making money off the soon-to-be-untenanted site seems to be a common theme for now, and that may change: the government management committee voted to ask staff to spend the next two years refining plans and consulting with the public.

Here’s hoping that as the city refines the plans, it thinks more expansively about, well, expanding that museum plan.

There is no need to limit a museum that delves into Toronto’s history and its current state to simply a 30,000-square-foot singular display. Toronto’s story is bigger than that.

This summer, I found myself in Stockholm, Sweden, and while there found time to visit the Nordiska Museum – a museum of cultural his-

tory dedicated to telling the story of life in Sweden, from the 16th century to the present.

It fills a building not so different in size and architectural presence from Old City Hall, and it uses that space to talk about everything from textiles, children’s toys and Christmas traditions to the Swedish love affair with sugar.

It’s not difficult to imagine a large, expansive museum that talks about Toronto, the many peoples who have made this place their home and helped build it into what it is.

As Canada’s largest municipality, Toronto’s story is more and more Canada’s story, too.

Limiting such a museum to a 30,000-square-foot wing of such a striking building would be a shame, a squandering of a rare opportunity.

Thanksgiving weekend means trip to cottage full of treasured memories I did it. I bought the farm. Well, not the farm, but the family cottage that’s been in the clan since 1959. No sooner than I pick up the keys from the lawyer, I will be up to the cottage Thanksgiving weekend to close up for the season.

The cottage was bought sight unseen by Dad for Mom and the growing family. With four kids aged nine and under in 1959 Mom and Dad were in the market for a family getaway, and the main instruction was for it to have a sandy beach.

Hardy sort Mom was a hardy sort, and her family had a cottage when she was growing up in Amethyst, outside of what is now Thunder Bay. It was powered by coal oil I was told. Not quite before electricity, but a throwback for sure.

Never in a million years did I think I, the youngest of six, would get a chance to purchase the family jewel – or 100-year-old money-pit of a fishing lodge.

But the other five had their reasons for not wanting to pur-

And this one is a throwback as well, with five tiny bedrooms upstairs numbered 1 through 5 where old Mr. Smith used to rent out rooms for folks wanting to take advantage of the generous fishing nearby.

Some of the original stuff lives on, from a plastic pickerel above the back door, to a lovely Hoosier-style cabinet in the kitchen. My Great Aunt Agnes would be proud her buffet lives on in the living room, stocked with cards, board games, batteries, needles and thread – anything you need for a rainy day at the cottage.

The storage closet is full of old treasures, from ’70s hockey jackets to Barbie lunch boxes.

The doorway where the kids’, grandkids’ and even pets’ height was charted lives on in the kitchen.

I’m sure the others have mixed emotions about the sale. The property was offered to a nearby neighbour as well,

and I was able to more or less match his offer. Emotions ran high during negotiations. The spectre of losing the grand old gal to a neighbour was a lot to swallow.

Things will change with the times for sure.

Belching stove Gone is the ringer washer Mom used on washing day, and where the kids were bathed. Gone is the belching propane stove I was sure was going to blow us all up. In will be the Internet, satellite TV and jet skis.

But for now, up for the last, sad goodbye until spring: the hauling in of the docks, and the installation of the ancient shutters on the upstairs windows to keep the harsh, snowy Muskoka winters out.

My parents’ spirit lives on in the old structure, at the beach, on the front porch, and in our hearts. I just get to enjoy it a bit closer than some.

Man, 50, dies after vehicle collides with back of TTC bus

A 50-year-old man died in a Tuesday morning collision involving a TTC bus in Scarborough.

The incident happened in the southbound lanes of Morningside Avenue, at Sheppard Avenue East at about 6:21 a.m., said Toronto police.

The bus, driven by a 31-year-old man, was rear-ended by a 2002 Jaguar and the driver of the car was found in the vehicle without vital signs.

He was pronounced dead at the

scene.

Morningside Avenue was closed between Casebridge Court and Sheppard Avenue.

The incident is now under investigation by the Toronto police homicide squad.

Modeste said all youth were either reunited with family members or were introduced to “stable environments” including private homes and other shelters.

“We were able to do this with the help of partners that came in to provide extensive housing support to the residents,” he said.

Supporters, including staff and former directors of Second Base, questioned the decision, made by the current board in June but announced to the public last month, to shut the 60-bed shelter down.

They did not agree with Modeste’s assessment that increasing financial pressures had made it hopeless to continue, arguing the shelter had been rescued from closure before.

A Sept. 18 rally in front of Second Base drew Canadian Union of Public Employees members and some of the remaining residents.

On the morning of Oct. 1, a few were still there, said Local CUPE President Collen Dew, but added Second Base’s Executive Director Sharon Allen-Elliott phoned her and told her not to come in for work that evening.

An email that day said staff would be able to pick up personal items and will still be paid until Oct. 20.

No one on the staff was told ahead of time the shelter would close, Dew said.

“It did not smell good,” she added Friday.

“We have no clue what they’re up to.”

Vic Park and St. Clair McDonald’s used to launch new experience DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com South Scarborough residents are getting a first taste of what’s cooking at McDonald’s.

The fast food chain has retrofitted its St. Clair and Victoria Park avenues location for a new customer experience. It’s the first in what will be rolled out to the rest of Canada over the next 18 months.

The new experience includes delivery to your table, self-serve kiosks, Guest Experience Leaders who greet patrons, help them find a seat and can walk them through using the self-serve kiosks and a new premium burger unlike previous offerings at McDonald’s, the Create Your Taste burger. Customers can also order at the counter as before.

“We’re looking for an enhanced, unmatched guest experience,” said Andrew

Sarta, McDonald’s Canada menu innovations manager, at the St. Clair Avenue location.

“This is all about the guest experience. We know that we offer a great experience today. We’re looking for a bit more personalization on a daily basis. This is a way McDonald’s can really facilitate that, offer something brand new that meets the different paces that consumers work at.”

He said the new experience will offer something for everybody, continuing to cater to those who want a meal on the quick and to those who want to spend a bit more time in the restaurant.

The self-serve kiosk allows customers to customize their orders, such as adding tomatoes or removing pickles on a Big Mac. Previously, this was available by ordering at the counter, and still is.

An important aspect of the self-serve kiosk is the new

Create Your Taste menu. It allows customers to build their own premium burger, with toppings not previously available on any other McDonald’s sandwich. The burger starts at $6.99.

This reporter can vouch for the burger. It’s size and taste is akin to what you would expect at a gastro pub. If you get creative with the toppings, the cost will creep up to pub prices as well. When it’s ordered, a bell is sounded and the staff cheer. It gets delivered to your table on a cutting board, not inside a cardboard box or wrapper.

McDonald’s said the retrofit of each restaurant costs $200,000, to pay for the infrastructure to offer the new burger, self-serve kiosks, a new bakery and more. It will also add 10 to 15 new jobs at each restaurant. The new experience will become available at about 1,000 McDonald’s restaurants in Canada.

City landmarks may get name on LRT stops The Ontario Science Centre and the Aga Khan Museum are some of the landmarks Metrolinx is proposing to use as inspiration for names of future LRT stations on the Eglinton Crosstown line.

Naming stations after tourist attractions is relatively unique for Toronto, although that seems to be changing. The TTC board recently eschewed its traditional practice of using streets for names when it approved a planned subway stop on the Spadina subway line to be named after nearby Black Creek Pioneer Village.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

■ In Toronto, we desperately need improvements in infrastructure and, in particular, public transit. I’m proud of the NDP plans to address both of these issues and allowing the community to set the priorities for those projects.

My priorities also include improving health care and senior’s long-term/home care. I want to address child poverty and I believe that the NDP’s initiative for quality $15/day childcare will help young families in our community who are struggling.

■ New Democrats know we must help – Canadians don’t want to stand by and watch as humanitarian crisis continue around the world.

With regards to Syria, the NDP has a plan to help. An NDP government will bring 10,000 government-sponsored refugees to Canada by the end of this year and will settle another 36,000 over the next four years. We’ll also fasttrack private sponsorships, to bring as many of those in need to Canada as possible.

■ As part of our commitment to reverse Harper’s health cuts, Tom Mulcair’s NDP will work with provinces to establish a national Alzheimer’s and Dementia Strategy. We will support screening and early diagnosis initiatives so Alzheimer’s and dementia can be identified and treated earlier to stop or slow the progression of the conditions. We will also improve resources and supports for newly diagnosed patients and their families and boost research funding into Alzheimer’s and dementia.

■ Laura is a successful public relations professional with deep roots in our community. After a decade of Stephen Harper’s Conservatives, she’s committed to fighting for our priorities in Parliament and delivering the change we need.

Laura works hard to give back to her community.

She has been a guest speaker at Humber College and for Steeles L’Amoreaux Youth Empowerment (SLYE), providing insights to young students on entering the job market. Politically active for several years at the grassroots level, Laura has organized several NDP community events.

■ I have listened to a good number of people in my community and they have a lot of issues with their living conditions and poor quality of life.

■ Canada is not taking care of First Nations peoples and we need to help people in our own backyards as well as turning our attention to the rest of the world.

■ I have worked tirelessly for this community for years. My priorities are to support family values and protect our children, grow the local industrial base to bring more jobs to our community, keep taxes low and ensure our neighborhoods are safe. If elected as your member of parliament for SG I would be a strong voice for this community and continue my track record of taking concerted action to bring results for Scarborough-Guildwood.

■ Canada has long been at the forefront of humanitarian crises. Canadians have responded time and time again to help those most in need, whether it be providing emergency shelter and food assistance during a natural disaster, to resettling refugees fleeing conflict zones.

Before the Syrian crisis was front page news I was already spearheading a group called the Canadian Interfaith Relief Committee comprised of the Office of Refugees of the Archdiocese of Toronto, Canadian Human Rights Voice, and Mozuud.

■ Our Conservative government has already spearheaded the Mental Health Commission of Canada, which supports the development of a national mental health strategy, sharing best practices and combatting the stigma of mental illness. I fully endorse the completion of a national strategy. If elected I would work with all levels of government to ensure that seniors health also continues to remain a real priority. As the son of a mother who has recently celebrated her 100th birthday and still lives at home, I am acutely sensitive to the needs of the elderly.

■ My family and I were welcomed to Canada as refugees from war-torn Europe. I grew up with the richness and challenges of the immigrant experience and am much better for it. I worked in the Hamilton steel mills cleaning out furnaces to pay for my university education and served as an inspector in the Royal Hong Kong Police before commencing a career in Canadian law enforcement, which has spanned nearly four decades.

I developed Canada’s hate crime laws and the successful community police liaison committees used by the Toronto Police Service.

■ A Liberal government will quadruple federal investment in public transit by investing an additional $20 billion. In ScarboroughGuildwood, I am committed to partnering with the Province of Ontario and City of Toronto to ensure a Scarborough Subway, Electrified Lakeshore GO Train, improved TTC bus service and traffic underpasses for the rail line at Morningside, Galloway and Scarborough Golf Club Road. We will also make significant new investments in affordable housing.

■ Under Stephen Harper, Canada has turned away from its humanitarian tradition.

Justin Trudeau will restore our reputation as a country of compassion that welcomes diversity.

Justin Trudeau has committed to increasing the number of Syrian refugees we receive to 25,000 and contributing $100 million to speed up processing and to support resettlement.

A Liberal government will also provide $100 million to the United Nations to support relief efforts in the region.

■ My colleague, Liberal MP Kirsty Duncan (Etobicoke North), has led the way in calling for a pan-Canadian dementia strategy having authored numerous articles and motions in the House. According to Ms. Duncan, the cost of caring for those suffering from this terrible condition is $15 billion annually. These costs will continue to rise, which is why we must develop a strategy to support Canadians suffering from this illness as well as their family and caregivers.

■ A lifelong Scarborough resident, I graduated from USTC and Queen’s University. After practicing law for 22 years, I was elected Member of Parliament in 1997 and have been re-elected six times. Currently Liberal Party Critic for the Environment, I have served as Critic for Defence, Parliamentary Secretary to Ministry of Finance (2003-’06) and sponsored five Private Members’ Bills, two of which received Royal Assent. Married to Carolyn, we have five children and three grandchildren.

■ As the Member of Parliament for Scarborough Centre, I have made it a priority to listen to the needs of my constituency, to represent residents as their voice in Ottawa and to deliver real results. Results like lower taxes, increased benefits for families and seniors, transit funding for Scarborough and measures to keep our communities and families safe through tougher sentencing and investments in crime prevention. My priorities remain the same.

■ Canada has contributed more than three quarters of a billion dollars in humanitarian relief, and has committed to resettle more persecuted religious and ethnic minorities from this region. However, this crisis cannot be solved with simply more aid or increased resettlement alone. Without confronting ISIS, the humanitarian crisis will only continue to grow. We must address this crisis at all three levels – confronting ISIS militarily, providing humanitarian aid and through controlled refugee resettlement.

■ Canada has already invested $37.8 million in research on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and through our Economic Action Plan 2015 we committed $42 million to establish the Canadian Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation. We recognize that research leads to better tools and treatments that can improve the quality of life for thousands of Canadians.

In order to share research and best practices, it is important to work with all partners.

■ As the MP for Scarborough Centre, I have kept constituents informed and engaged with strong communication initiatives. Both as a woman and a mother, I have taken strong stances to keep prostitution and illegal drug injection sites out of our neighbourhoods and helped put an end to forced and early marriages.

A long-term resident of Scarborough Centre, this is where I live and continue to raise my family. I am here for you in Scarborough Centre!

■ Our economy is in trouble. We need to negotiate better agreements to save Canadians money. I would invest in transit, health care, a national pharma care plan, housing strategy and our environment. There are many priorities and I would urge you to read them all at greenparty. ca/en/vision-green As a Green party candidate, I am not whipped to vote with my party, although I align with their priorities, I am able to vote to represent my constituents.

■ We should stop bombing countries unless specifically sanctioned by the UN, this would save us money and reduce the number of refugees. I would like to point out that a common myth is circulating that refugees make more than pensioners in Canada, this is absolutely false. Refugees are able to collect standard social assistance, which covers basic needs if they are government sponsored. I would vote to increase the number of refugees allowed to enter Canada.

■ I would absolutely support a national strategy for dementia. In fact Bill C-356 is just that, but failed because the Conservatives, including the incumbent, Roxanne James, voted against the Bill. This is of particular interest in Scarborough Centre because of the number of seniors residences. We need to work with the Alzheimer’s Society to develop a strategy and we can look to England, Wales and Ireland for data and feedback on their national strategies.

■ I am a University of Toronto graduate. I work with data, and possess strong research skills. I live in Scarborough with my husband, Steve, and my dog, Wilson. I grew up hiking and biking through Thomson Park, discussing politics around the dinner table with my family, attending public school in French immersion and being a proud Canadian. I’ve been appalled by Harper’s position on many issues and would like to bring change to Ottawa.

■ What I’m hearing at the door is that people are ready for change. After 10 years of Harper, incomes are dropping and household debt is rising. Tom Mulcair’s plan will create jobs, cut small business taxes, and help families.

The NDP will also make sure that Canada Post still delivers your mail door to door. An NDP government will repeal Bill C-51. We shouldn’t be forced to choose between our security and our rights.

■ An NDP government will restore Canada’s reputation as a compassionate and respected leader on the world stage. The Syrian refugee crisis is the worst refugee crisis since the Second World War – more than 12 million Syrians are now displaced – but Harper has failed to meet his own minimum standards. We’ve seen the success and contributions of hardworking people from around the world in Scarborough. Working together, we can re-establish Canadian leadership.

■ Any family dealing with these challenges knows more support is desperately needed. In keeping with our tradition of leading in health care, we announced a national Alzheimer’s and Dementia Strategy. The NDP will invest $40 million to support early screening, early diagnosis and treatment. We will improve resources for newly diagnosed patients and their families to access needed care, as well as fund additional Alzheimer’s and dementia research. Tom’s strong leadership will put people first.

■ I have worked tirelessly in Scarborough on various local issues because I firmly believe that we need local leaders who listen and create policies that respond to people’s needs. My experience as a Scarborough resident, local pastor and a leader establishing a Daily Bread food bank and partnering with Toronto City Mission to provide after-school programs for children have molded my passion for the people of Scarborough.

■ The deficit in transit infrastructure and affordable housing hurts our communities. We are spending more time in gridlock and less time with family and having to make hard choices between groceries and paying the rent. The Liberals have pledged historical investments – $20 billion in transit and $20 billion in social infrastructure dedicated to creating and refurbishing affordable housing. My utmost priority is to support these investments in creating new jobs and avoiding long commutes.

■ Canada can and must do more in humanitarian crises. We have an obligation to help those displaced by war and violence. A Liberal government will expand Canada’s intake to 25,000 refugees from Syria through immediate and direct sponsorship. We will invest $100 million this fiscal year to increase processing and settlement services for refugees, without compromising standards. There will be an immediate $100 million new contribution to the UN High Commission for Refugees.

■ The Liberals have long called on the federal Conservative government for a pan-Canadian Dementia Strategy to address Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. A Liberal government is committed to working with the provinces and territories to lead the strategy.

We will invest in research and preventative measures to assist in the delay of the onset of the disease so Canadians can maintain their cognitive abilities and live life to the fullest.

■ My family and I immigrated to Canada shortly after completing my masters of education in the U.K. As an advocate for protection of programs at my son’s local school, I learned the value of public service and was motivated to accept a job with the Ontario government as an advisor for Consumer Services, Health and Long Term Care and Citizenship and Immigration. Scarborough-Agincourt, for a quarter-century, was the domain of Liberal MP Jim Karygiannis. That changed last year when Karygiannis stepped down, later jumping into a role at Toronto City Council, and a new Liberal, Arnold Chan, won the resulting byelection. Chan is now running again. ■ This election is about which party can grow the economy and help the middle class.

That is why I am supporting the Liberal plan to cut the middle class income tax bracket by seven per cent from a rate of 22 per cent to 20.5 per cent. I also believe that Canada is facing a significant infrastructure deficit. Our plan will grow the economy by quadrupling support for public transit and by getting the federal government again supporting social housing.

■ Canada has an important obligation to help those in need. I firmly believe that we must do more to help those who are fleeing war zones and oppression. Canada should immediately act to take in 25,000 Syrian refugees. That is why the Liberal plan will see $100 million committed to faster processing of refugees and another $100M to the UNHCR to assist in the current crisis.

■ The Liberal Party has long-called for federal leadership to establish a pan-Canadian Dementia Strategy to address the need for a national plan for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. A Liberal government will provide leadership for real action on a pan-Canadian dementia strategy. We will repair the federal government’s relationship with the provinces and ensure federal collaboration with provincial and territorial partners to tackle critical needs such as dementia.

■ Since being elected as your Member of Parliament, I have spent the last year fighting for change. I have attended numerous local events and met with many of you. I have worked hard to represent you to promote issues that are important to Scarborough. I have fought to increase funding for transit, fix our immigration system and to create the conditions for success similar to that of which I had when growing up in Scarborough-Agincourt.

■ Protecting the economy is my No. 1 priority. That’s why I’m proud to run for the Conservative Party because we are the only party with a low-tax, balanced budget plan to protect our fragile economy. So far this year, we have a $5 billion surplus with a balanced budget law. I will save the monthly child care cheques and maintain income splitting for families and seniors. I am also outraged by any measure that increases the availability of marijuana. Only our Conservative Party wants to stop kids from smoking marijuana.

■ The Government of Canada announced that we will match donations made by Canadians in response to the crisis in Syria. The announcement builds on our significant response to this crisis. Canada is already one of the providers of humanitarian aid to the region, one of the top countries in resettling refugees, and Canada is participating with our Allies in the international coalition taking the fight to ISIS.

■ Our Conservative Party will establish the Canadian Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation, which will help discover tools to help seniors with aging and brain-related issues.

While the previous Liberal government cut health care transfers to provinces by 30 per cent, since 2006, our Conservative government has increased health-care transfers to the provinces by nearly 70 per cent. In Ontario, we are increasing health-care transfers by more than the Ontario Liberal government is increasing their own spending on health care.

■ I am an associate professor of finance and the finance area coordinator in the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. My area of expertise is in corporate finance. I was on the Economic Development Committee of Toronto Region Board of Trade, an influential think tank. As the VP of Toronto Community and Culture Centre, I have raised funds to help youth employment. I am one of the founding directors of Say Yes to York University Petition Work Group to support York University’s new campus, which is an eight-minute drive from Scarborough-Agincourt.

■ As your NDP candidate my priority is to bring change to Ottawa and give Agincourt strong, fair representation. Even though families here in Scarborough are working harder than ever, we are falling behind. The NDP will protect health care by stopping health-care cuts, grow the economy by lowering taxes on small business, create jobs and opportunities for youth and improve transit by partnering with the city. We have lived with Harper’s failed plan for too long.

■ Helping refugees is a critical demonstration of Canadian values. Many people have come to Canada in search of a life free from oppression and violence. These refugees have influenced and become an essential part of the Canadian cultural mosaic. Michaelle Jean and Adrienne Clarkson initially came to Canada as a refugees.

The NDP will bring in over 10,000 refugees in 2015, 9,000 a year until 2019, and make it a priority to keep families together.

■ There are over three quarters of a million people living in Canada with Alzheimer’s or dementia. The NDP supports a national strategy on dealing with this. Harper’s cuts and procrastination have put a lot of strain on individuals and families. The NDP would help by supporting early diagnosis initiatives like screening, improve information and resources accessible for newly diagnosed and their families, develop guidelines and practices based on person-centred dignified care and boost research funding.

■ My family has lived in Scarborough for three generations. My brother and I were raised by our grandfather and single mom, who worked at a grocery store for minimum wage. As a young person from Scarborough, I understand student debt, and what it’s like to struggle to find a good quality job in this economy. We worry about affording a home, or children. Scarborough needs the NDP’s practical solutions for better transit, jobs and child care.

■ One issue that faces Toronto is allowing chemicals and toxic substances within the borders. Municipally, Toronto was able to ban pesticides on lawns, even though the use of chemicals was a federal issue, on the grounds that the city should have the right to protect its citizenry from harm. As a member of the Green Party, if elected, I would vote against all pipelines and support public transparency about what kinds of toxins are crossing Toronto.

■ Canada, as a nation of immigrants, should be one a front runner in welcoming refugees to our country. The global climate crisis is in a huge part our doing – Canada’s oil and gas industry has played its role in the rising levels of green house gasses. We are one of the richest nations in the world and because we are so far north we won’t fair as badly as many other countries as extreme weather creates more refugees.

■ The Green Party is all about evidencebased decision making. In my opinion, talking with the people who work in this field and getting their best practices and their solutions is the first step to creating a plan. We should talk to the experts and find out what works, here and in other countries before making any hard and fast decisions.

■ I’ve lived in Toronto for 10 years and have always been active in politics since high school.

After graduating University I travelled and lived and worked as a high school teacher in Japan, France and England. I moved home with my husband to have our first child and that when I became an environmental and social justice advocate and activist. Two years ago I was asked to run in the provincial elections for the Green Party and I did.

While the current focus is the refugee crisis in Europe, our immigration system has been whittled away to a hollow shell of what it once was. ■ As someone who has witnessed a grandparent suffer from dementia, I am fully committed to advocating for a national strategy to combat Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, as well as providing care for those who need it. By collaborating with provinces, the federal government can play a leadership role to support research and prevention. Furthermore, a Liberal government will invest $20 billion in social infrastructure, including the refurbishing and building of new seniors’ facilities.

■ The Green Party and I both support the development of a National Dementia Strategy to reduce the impact of disability and identify ways to improve services and supports for Canadians and their care partners who are living with dementia. To address the issue, systemic change must occur. Supporting those living with dementia requires more flexible regulations for caregivers, better and more accessible health-care services and increased spending for social programming.

■ I am a passionate young woman with a desire to help people. I’m running in this election because I believe that for democracy to flourish, an MP must be truly representative of the people. ■ Scarborough is my priority. It is also my home. And this community deserves more, much more, than it has been getting after nearly 10 years of Stephen Harper and the Conservatives. ■ Canada has one of the most generous per capita immigration and refugee resettlement programs in the world. In fact, Canada resettles more than one in 10 refugees world-wide. Prime Minister Harper has set a target for Canada to accept 23,000 Iraqis refugees and 11,300 Syrians. Of that number, Canada has already resettled nearly 22,000 Iraqis and 2,300 Syrians. The Prime Minister also recently announced that a Conservative government would add an additional 10,000 persecuted ethnic and religious minorities from the region.

What are your priorities for Toronto in this campaign and how will you fight for the city’s needs, if elected?

■ My priority is Scarborough North and bringing its voice to Ottawa. I have been listening to families and their issues that matter most to them because I believe in being a part of the problem solving process. The top issues that I will be focussed on are what I hear at the doors; people want lower the taxes and more money in the pockets of Canadian families, they want to have, and continue to grow, well-paying jobs, better transportation, help for parents managing the costs of child care and initiatives and legislation that helps keep our communities safe.

■ An NDP government will invest $40 million to create a national Alzheimer’s and Dementia strategy. Updating the way we deliver health care is part of being a responsible and proactive government. We will support screening, early diagnosis and treatment. Improving resources for newly diagnosed patients and their families, and funding research in partnership with provincial governments, researchers and the Alzheimer Society will ensure a sustainable and forward-looking solution exists for Canadians and their loved ones.

■ I am an engaged community member with a strong passion and determination to do right by the people of Scarborough North. I have been able to understand the strengths and weaknesses, allowing me to focus in a positive direction. With my Career College I have helped a lot of students as well as it has been a great source for supporting numerous single mothers becoming entrepreneurs. Much like Prime Minister Steven Harper, I also share a vision of a strong, united and a welcoming Canada.

■ I’m a local resident with 15 years of experience as an activist. I have served as the MP for Scarborough-Rouge River since 2011, but I’ve been organizing my community in the fight for equity and equal access since I was seven years old. I’m very excited to be talking with more and more of my fellow residents every day, who feel the same way I do about the NDP’s concrete plan for change.

Scarborough Southwest drew national attention when Liberals, hoping to recapture a seat lost to them in 2011, nominated Bill Blair, Toronto’s former police chief. A tight race is expected between Blair and Dan Harris, the New Democrat incumbent. ■ My first priority will be to work hard to serve the needs of the people of Scarborough Southwest. This is a riding that has been ignored for too long. We always seem to miss out on federal infrastructure dollars and that’s something I intend to change. I’ll fight for investment in our community, especially in our hospitals, and meaningful tax cuts for struggling families.

■ Leadership is often about doing the right thing. We simply cannot ignore these desperate families who are literally marching across a continent in search of sanctuary. I believe most Canadians understand what we have to do here, and I’m proud of the Liberal party’s position of taking action to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada, should we form government.

■ Dementia is extremely traumatic for both the patient and their families and a growing problem for hospitals. We need to better support programs to make it easier for people to stay home and take care of their parents and grandparents. We will make benefits more accessible and introduce greater flexibility with our Compassionate Care Benefit.

■ Serving as Toronto’s police chief was an honour and I loved that job, but I always saw myself as a public servant. I grew up in Scarborough, raised three children here and spent almost every day of the last four decades working on issues that are important to our community. I believe I can make a difference in Scarborough Southwest and give us a strong local voice and the leadership we deserve.

■ Building better public transit and to fix crumbling infrastructure are top priorities for Toronto. The NDP will create a Minister for Urban Affairs to begin to address the results of decades of Conservative and Liberal neglect. Canada is the only G7 country without a national transit strategy. The NDP’s 20-year Better Transit Fund will mean $12.9 billion in infrastructure funding for the region including $7.7 billion targeted exclusively for transit funding. We have also previously committed to providing an additional one cent of the gas tax to municipalities.

■ Canada must take a leadership role to help resolve the growing refugee and humanitarian crisis. The Conservative government has been neglectful of Syrian refugees, in particular, but also of those from all over the world. The United Nations Special Rapporteur has called for the West to re-settle one million Syrian refugees over the next five years. Canada’s share would be 9,000 Syrian refugees annually. We must act now to assist with this ambitious and very necessary agenda.

■ As part of our commitment to reverse Harper’s health cuts, the NDP will work with provinces to establish a national Alzheimer’s and dementia strategy using the principles included in Claude Gravelle’s Bill C-356. An NDP government will create the Canadian Alzheimer’s and Dementia Partnership, bringing together provinces, researchers, the Alzheimer Society and other experts to guide new research funds, develop and share best practices, monitor dementia prevalence, and support improvements in dignified person-centred care.

■ This election will be my sixth in Scarborough Southwest. In addition to having been the Member of Parliament since 2011, this means I have more local experience than most.

This experience has taught me the important lesson that the only true barrier between the current situation and change for the better is a lack of will. If you don’t keep trying, nothing will ever change. Don’t ever let them tell you that it can’t be done.

■ My priorities reflect what I’ve been hearing at the doors: a stronger economy, lower taxes, and jobs. The Conservatives have managed Canada’s economy through economic instability, and the plan is working. Canada has a $5-billion surplus, Canadians are paying fewer taxes, 1.3 million jobs have been created since 2009 and the Conservative Party aims to create 1.3 million more by 2020. Now is not the time for billions in deficits and higher taxes.

■ The crisis in Syria and Iraq must be addressed at three levels – providing humanitarian aid, refugee re-settlement and confronting the source of the crisis, ISIS, militarily. The Conservative government has contributed more than three quarters of a billion dollars for humanitarian relief in the region. In addition, Prime Minister Harper also indicated that Canada will bring in additional persecuted religious and ethnic minorities, and provide measures to speed up the processing of refugees.

■ Our Conservative government established the Canadian Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation, to help discover new tools to help seniors with aging and brain-related issues, including dementia. It is important to note that even in times of economic instability, this Conservative government never cut funding for health care. In fact, since 2006 health-care transfers to provinces increased by nearly 70 per cent. Health-care transfers will continue to grow each year under a Conservative government.

■ Since coming to this country, I’ve always felt the need to help the community of Scarborough. I consider Scarborough my home and I want to make sure this is a safe community for our kids to grow up in. I’ve been a front-line law enforcement officer for the last six years and have been very active in the community by engaging in programs that focus on the security of Scarborough, the youth, and family welfare.

■ Scarborough is home to thousands of inventive, creative and skilled people. Where we fail them, however, is providing opportunity.

I’m hearing a lot of politicians talk about the “disappearing middle class.” They didn’t disappear – they became low-income households or joined the nearly five million Canadians living in poverty. A National Housing Strategy, the Guaranteed Living Income, and sustainable transit are how I want to empower all who call Toronto home to succeed.

■ I worked on behalf of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) as a fundraiser during their very first public campaign in 2013. The Syrian Civil War was raging and with countries like Canada cutting back on aid, the agency had inadequate funding for the first time in its history. The Syrian refugee crisis isn’t a “surprise issue.” Canada must take a more active role in partnerships with NGO’s, financial aid and asylum.

■ I am proud to say that the Greens would create a national dementia strategy, which includes more long-term care beds in neighborhood facilities and improved supports for family members. In addition to our plans on housing and poverty, the Green Party would create a national pharmacare program – all part of a very comprehensive seniors strategy that I encourage people to review themselves.

■ Born and living in Toronto, I have been an active voice for civil liberties, accountability and transparency (anti-carding, repeal Bill C-51).

I have worked as a professional fundraiser on behalf of NGOs that empower and assist Canadians and those in crisis around the globe such as CAMH, SickKids, Amnesty International and Doctors Without Borders. Prior to this, I was employed by multiple arts and culture groups across the GTA in both creative and administrative roles.

A Liberal government will provide leadership for real action on a pan-Canadian strategy. We will repair the federal government’s relationship with the provinces and ensure collaboration with our partners. By investing in research and prevention we can delay onset for as long as possible so Canadians can live their life to the fullest.

■ I have lived, worked, volunteered and established a law practice in Scarborough.

I’m proud to have contributed extensively to youth development, strengthening economic partnership and community building through local boards and organizations. Internationally, I’m a human rights activist and have appeared many times before the United Nations. I have been awarded the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals. I believe in making a real, positive difference in Scarborough-Rouge Park that makes Canada stronger.

■ If elected, my goal is to give the same committed and high-quality representation to Scarborough-Rouge Park and Toronto as I am known for as a lawyer and university instructor.

My priorities for Scarborough-Rouge Park and Toronto are: Job creation and maintenance, youth employment and training, senior assistance, economic stability and environmental sustainability.

■ Canada continues to play a significant global humanitarian role. We have taken in approximately 2,500 Syrian refugees and 20,000 refugees from Iraq. Moreover, Stephen Harper has committed to allowing 10,000 more Middle East refugees into the country over the next four years. Our government also understands that this crisis requires new measures that will speed up the processing of refugees, including devoting extra staff to the crisis.

■ My father, who recently passed away, lived with dementia; and I cared for him during many of the last few years of his life. I truly understand the urgency of this troubling and increasing health crisis. I support our federal government, provinces and individuals coming together to develop national strategies and programs to address it. I therefore commend our government and the Alzheimer Society of Canada for the ‘Dementia Friends Initiative,’ launched this year.

■ I am a committed mother, lawyer, educator and community advocate. I have served the community for over 15 years as a lawyer and advocate. I am an instructor at Osgoode Hall Law School. I have extensive community service experience, including the United Nations, Women’s Legal Action Fund and Ontario Round Table on the Environment and the Economy. I love my country, Canada, and would be honoured to serve as a member of parliament.

With humanitarian crises continuing across the globe, what role should Canada play in assisting those people find their better future?

Canada is soon expected to see a dramatic increase in dementia cases among our senior population.

Would you support a national strategy on dementia? What needs to happen to address the issue?

■ Get Toronto recognized as a major conduit for business and people. Toronto needs federal recognition to ensure that the funding relationship is more equitable to the reality of Toronto’s role as a major urban centre. Our transportation, immigration and housing needs supersedes that of all other big cities. Homelessness is a big city problem that needs greater attention and the other levels of government need to recognize this and assist Toronto with additional housing and homeless supports to help end homelessness.

■ The NDP is proposing immediate assistance and a more expedited approach to help re-settle those in need. We will screen and assess the neediest and help a predetermined number of refugees to resettle in Canada. Canadians are kind, compassionate and we want to help. The NDP will act responsibly to protect Canada’s interest and to help those in need.

■ The NDP is proposing a $40 million strategy to deal with Alzheimer and dementia.

We will focus on screening, early diagnosis and treatment to slow the advance of this devastating health condition. We believe our seniors deserve better. We will implement faster access to health care professionals and greater supports for families.

■ I am the only candidate from the three main parties living in the riding. I have lived here, my children went to school here and I still call this area home. I have been a member of this community for almost 30 years. I started my cricket academy here in Malvern, my first church was here on Morningview Trail and my family and friends still live here. I am a husband, father, grandfather, a pastor and I work as a manager with a telecommunications company. I have played professional cricket in Sri Lanka, England, Bahrain and also for team Canada.

■ Past governments have allowed critical Toronto infrastructure to crumble. The gap between the infrastructure funding our cities like Toronto need, and the funding they receive, is reaching crisis levels – Canada’s infrastructure deficit is estimated to be upwards of $350 billion. As your MP I will work to close this gap by committing $6.4 billion per year, one point of the GST, to municipal infrastructure – creating good local jobs and a building vibrant, safe and livable Toronto.

■ Canada needs to play a leadership role, as we have done in the past, in the current refuge crisis. Canada has turned its back both on the refugees themselves but also on our European allies who have no choice but to bear the burden of helping those arriving to their doorstep in droves. The government needs to stop trumpeting the promises that they have made and actually start putting real effort into fulfilling those promises, and then doing more.

If we do not act quickly this crisis could easily become a catastrophe.

■ Yes, I would support a National Dementia Strategy, which is part of the Green Party platform as a component of our National Seniors Strategy. Our National Dementia Strategy includes more long-term care beds in neighbourhood facilities and improved supports for family members. At a time when our healthcare system needs more help than ever, the Conservatives have cut $36 billion in funding, leaving our health system in disarray and the provinces forced to fill the funding gap.

■ Calvin Winter is a new media specialist, web developer and artist who lives and works in Scarborough. A lifetime resident of the former municipality within Toronto, Calvin has lived in various parts of Scarborough since his birth. In 2014, he graduated from Ryerson University with a BFA specializing in new media.

Calvin currently lives with his fiancée Simone in Agincourt and will be moving with her to the Scarborough-Rouge Park neighbourhood of West Hill this fall.

T

his was supposed to be their time.

With their son off to university and successful careers behind them, Bruce Rhodes and his wife, Liz, both 58, had expected these would be the years to reap the rewards of a full life together.

Instead, they are battling a disease together, one they both, at times, believe is worse than death.

“Ohhh, I am an idiot!” said Liz as she hops up and down in their sunny Richmond Hill kitchen.

“My brain is broken,” she smacks her hands against her head, letting out a long, keening wail.

Bruce pays no mind to her bizarre behaviour, grateful she is no longer talking about hating herself and wanting to die.

“We were so perfectly matched,” said Bruce, a retired software developer. “We were intellectually compatible and I trusted her completely.”

Now, due to dementia, their world has shrunk, travel and social gatherings long past.

Bruce spends his time trying to

keep Liz safe, fed, bathed and properly medicated, struggling not to turn to booze or bash a hole in the wall in frustration.

Liz, who was an author and university professor before frontotemporal dementia began destroying her brain, now lives in her own private world of confusion, battling his efforts to care for her, struggling to escape.

He can’t leave her alone and they rarely leave home. Outings are challenging and at times embarrassing, said Bruce, with his beloved wife now behaving like an unruly five year old.

“Dementia is vicious, just vicious,” he said.

It can be a lonely existence for the caregiver who must bear the burden of day-to-day life and for the person with dementia whose increasing confusion can leave them housebound and isolated.

Research has shown connected people are healthy people, and yet the Alzheimer’s Society 2014 survey reports 40 per cent of people with dementia felt lonely and 34 per

Caregivers reported the same.

“It’s a family illness,” said occupational therapist Nira Rittenberg.

“It affects the person cognitively and emotionally. Caregiving time is intense.”

Rittenberg, co-author of the guidebook Dementia: A Caregiver’s Guide, oversees a psycho-educational support group. Families make the trek to Baycrest Health Sciences in Toronto seeking her help for a myriad of concerns – from what to do when

the patient doesn’t want to attend doctor appointments or asks the same question repeatedly, to issues stirred up between siblings caring for parents.

There is an emotional toll, “losing that personhood is hard for everyone to watch,” along with a physical and financial one, and it may be why 80 per cent of caregivers end up with their own disorders and issues, she said.

The person with dementia, meanwhile, finds himself increasingly isolated.

In a n A l z h e i m e r D i s e a s e International survey of more than 2,400 people from 54 countries, more than 75 per cent of respondents with dementia said they’ve noticed a negative stigma about the disease, most commonly being discounted or marginalized by others.

Kuriakose is calling for urgent action and said the focus on late-stage dementia and a belief that nothing can be done to help leads to hopelessness and fear of negative reactions.

“People start fearing ‘viral dementia,’” Rittenberg said. “It’s not that they think they’ll ‘catch’ it, but they may hide from it because they can’t deal with it, especially if they’re of the same age cohort.”

Unlike those with physical challenges, there is no wheelchair or visible indication of a disability. As one patient puts it, “when something’s wrong with your mind, it feels like something is wrong with you.”

In the early stages, those with dementia may become withdrawn, aware they can’t keep up in social settings, but Maisie Jackson is determined not to let that happen.

GLOBAL VISION Across the globe, innovations and dementia-friendly management programs are helping to eradicate stigma and ensure people with dementia continue to enjoy a high quality of life after diagnosis: THE NETHERLANDS When visitors first tour Hogewey, in the Netherlands, they see what appears to be a typical village with residents roaming laneways and houses, parks, supermarket, theatre and restaurants.

In fact, this village is actually a cutting-edge facility for those with

advanced dementia. Cameras monitor residents, caregivers wear street clothes and operate “businesses” and the entire community – the size of 10 football fields – is securely enclosed.

The theory is that in most cases, as the disease progresses, those with dementia leave the “real” world; problems occur when we try to drag them back into reality.

SOUTH KOREA In South Korea, recognized as the fastest-aging country in the world, a dementia management law man-

dates that citizens older than 65 be checked for dementia symptoms and in each of the city’s 25 urban districts, a dementia centre offers activities and social connections.

LONDON, UK The Community Care Model for Dementia is an innovative practice in northeast London.

A rapid-response support team made up of nurses, support workers and psychiatrists acts as a safety net to help those with dementia stay out of hospital. The team provides crisis support in the patient’s home

and has been able to reduce the rate of hospital admissions and length of hospital stays.

GERMANY Germany’s Alzheimer Society hosts a website called ‘Alzheimer and You’ aimed at people aged 14 to 21. It’s part of a national program to help youth understand dementia and includes tips, memory tests, contests and project ideas for schools.

SCOTLAND The concept of dementia dogs is being explored in Scotland to help those with mild cognitive impairment maintain their waking, sleeping and eating routine, remind them to take medication and stay active in the community. “I thought the end had come, my life was over. I didn’t tell anyone.”

She worried she would waste away like her mother, aunt and older sister before her, alone in a rocking chair, clutching a baby doll.

Instead, she clutches a thick daybook jam-packed with appointments, conferences and meetings at the local Alzheimer’s society.

“The society gave me my life back,” said the former director of sales at Niagara’s Pillar and Post Inn. Her days are busy mentoring others, attending board meetings and giving presentations across the province. She no longer hides her diagnosis.

“If I’m having trouble, I just say ‘Give me a moment please, I have dementia.’”

Communicating with others about the disease has given her life new purpose, she said.

Jackson has learned life does not end when the diagnosis begins. A slew of promising new programs bolsters that view – from as far away as the Netherlands, where an entire enclosed village was created for dementia residents, to the Kawartha town of Bobcaygeon, where Blue Umbrella logos open doors, and minds, for those experiencing cognitive decline.

During the summer months, Bobcaygeon is bustling with tourists, cottagers and retirees.

It’s also speckled with little Blue Umbrella decals that let those with dementia know they

are welcome.

The Blue Umbrella is a unique project garnering interest across Canada.

Designed to combat stigma and promote awareness, the program provides umbrella pins to those with dementia.

Window decals are given to businesses trained to help with challenges such as bank machines, crowded spaces and communicating with staff.

Nearly 50 of an estimated 200 Bobcaygeon residents with dementia have registered to wear the pins since it was launched last April, said Pat Finkle, the local Alzheimer Society’s former client support co-ordinator.

About 70 businesses have joined so far.

“We’ve done phenomenally well,” Finkle said.

“People are talking about it more and the person with dementia is being talked with more, too, and engaged in the community. The more people who are out wearing that blue umbrella, the more we are changing the perception of what dementia is.”

Buoyed by the Bobcaygeon success, the Alzheimer Society of Ontario has decided to expand the program to five more communities across the province and is seeking funding to help make it grow.

A similar program, Dementia Friends, was launched in June through the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

The society received $1.8 million in federal funding to launch the program and hopes to encourage a million Canadians to sign on at www.DementiaFriends.ca by 2017.

This is the most common cause of dementia. It accounts for 60 to 80 per cent of cases. During the course of the disease, the chemistry and structure of the brain changes, leading to the death of brain cells.

FTD is caused by progressive nerve cell loss in the brain’s frontal lobes. Personality and behaviour are initially more affected than memory. People with FTD generally develop symptoms at a younger age (about age 60).

If the oxygen supply to the brain fails, brain cells may die. The symptoms of vascular dementia can occur either suddenly, following a stroke, or over time, through a series of small strokes.

This form of dementia gets its name from tiny spherical structures that develop inside nerve cells. Their presence in the brain leads to the degeneration of brain tissue.

s a young volunteer and recreation therapist working in long-term care homes, Ashley Kwong saw the worst of the worst.

“I saw it all, from cockroach-laden plates, food all pureed together, to residents who’d strip down because they had no AC and then get yelled at by staff,” she recalls. “I felt powerless; who could I call?”

She decided to tackle the problem herself, returning to university to study gerontology, then establishing her own service for those with dementia – one that is getting noticed worldwide.

Memory & Company doesn’t look like a daycare for people with dementia and it doesn’t bill itself as such, either.

Instead, it’s referred to as Canada’s first Alzheimer’s health club.

Tucked inside an industrial park in Markham, the 11,000-square-foot facility is custom-designed to meet the needs of those with dementia with a “club-like, non-institutional

feel.”

Unlike most daycare programs, this centre features multiple, brightly lit activity rooms connected in a circular layout, allowing clients to wander securely (without agitating doors and dead-ends) and choose

activities that interest them.

One library-like room is filled with coffee table books, records and magazines, another music room has iPads downloaded with favourite songs, photos and videos, old-fashioned turntables, cassette decks and musical instruments. A dress-up room offers a vintage makeup table with jewelry, purses and a camera for fun photo shoots, another resembles an office with maps, puzzles and older office equipment clients might recognize from their working days.

“We have to get people to change their mindset for what day programs can be,” Kwong said.

Society is increasingly focused on aging in place, but few options for meaningful activity or relationships are available for those with dementia at home except occasional respite and the TV, she said.

“People want to enjoy their day no matter who they are,” Kwong said.

Metroland Media Toronto is accepting tenders from owner/ operators of a Distribution Warehouse equipped with loading docks, both truck level and ground level, and forklifts. Location must be in the Etobicoke area. Applicants must be able to arrange daily pick up and drop offs of our weekly Newspaper and flyer skids by certified transport trucks and be able to house a small fleet of independent contractors, under contract with Metroland, who will use the applicant’s warehouse as a distribution centre. Applicant will be responsible for all of their own employee relations and equipment involved with the operations of said distribution warehouse and will abide by Metroland’s delivery deadlines, release of product restrictions and warehouse operation hours. All applicants must be a registered business with a valid HST number.
