The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation (RVHSF) originally created this event in 2011 to raise funds for the hospital’s Buy-a-Bed campaign.

Money raised from the campaign helped the hospital buy 120 new hospital beds, which were then installed in February of last year.

This year the hospital is looking to raise a total of $65,000 to purchase a new operating table for Rouge Valley’s Surgical Program.

Rouge Valley’s surgical department will be defending their first place title this year.

Festivities begin at 11 a.m. with registrations and opening ceremonies. The Hospital Cup starts at 11:30 a.m. and the community races start at noon.

A

roller-coaster ride.

That’s how Patricia and Rod McKee describe their son Jake’s journey after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour at age seven.

Jake was a seemingly healthy boy when he developed headaches in the summer of 2012. Since Jake didn’t complain a lot, his parents didn’t think too much of it at the time.

“Then a few times he would just say he wasn’t feeling well,” Patricia said. “The symptoms kind of came and went.”

In October 2012, Jake began vomiting in the mornings, which was thought to be the flu.

But on the advice of Telehealth Ontario, Patricia took Jake to The Hospital for Sick Children where an alert emergency room doctor ordered a CT scan after per-

forming a balance test.

“She took him to the hospital just thinking he had a flu,” Rod said. “It was a total shock when they told her it was a tumour. Our lives changed overnight.”

Patricia said Jake was “pretty critical” on the night of the diagnosis, noting doctors were “standing by to operate even that evening if they had to, but were hoping to wait until the morning, (which) they did.”

Jake was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour called ependymoma and underwent a 12-hour surgery.

Rod recalls the words of neurosurgeon Dr. Peter Dirks right after the operation.

“He said ‘that was probably one of the most difficult surgeries’ and he kind of paused and he said ‘actually it probably was the most difficult.’”

stem, bending the brain stem.

“They removed what they thought was the complete tumour but upon further imaging they found that there was a little bit left,” Patricia said.

Jake went through three cycles of chemotherapy as part of a clinical trial, underwent a second surgery in January 2013 to remove the residual tumour and then received 33 rounds of focal radiation.

But with the surgeries came posterior fossa syndrome, a postoperative condition that causes speech disturbances, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and decreased motor movement.

“He (Jake) was very angry, and the steroids (given to relieve inflammation in the brain after surgery) I think contributed to that,” Patricia said. “Jake is a very sensitive, kind and gentle boy, but the boy I saw after surgery was not that.”

Jake couldn’t swallow (not even his own saliva) and was fed through a feeding tube until he regained his swallowing ability in August. He also had to learn to walk again.

“It’s like a roller-coaster,” Rod said. “One minute you’re just praying he’ll survive and then you’re happy he survived and you’re hoping he’s going to be able to walk and eat.”

Jake received four months of extensive physiotherapy at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and became fairly independent again.

Things were finally looking up.

But in October Jake began complaining of back pain, and an MRI in December showed four tumours on his spine.

“So the ependymoma had metastasized,” said Patricia.

“We started immediately with full brain and full spine radiation for 30 days.”

Jake then under went surger y to remove the tumours.

“With this surgery, he’s having problems walking again,” Patricia said.

Jake has now returned to Holland Bloorview for ther-

apy; he’s scheduled to be there until the end of June.

“We’re hoping to have the best summer ever. We’ve been through two years of really challenging times as a family,” Patricia said.

“We’re just going to try to enjoy our time together as much as we can so that we can sort of get back to normal.”

Patricia had this advice to

families going through a similar ordeal: “Trust your Sick Kids team and just always have hope.”

Jake said Sick Kids wasn’t a scary place. “It’s a good place because they help you get better,” he said.

Growing healthier children now will save grief later on

anadians believe our youth do not have a healthy lifestyle. We are twice as concerned about obesity in our youth, than any other health risk. That says a lot about the physical conditioning of our youth. But it also says there is hope for our youth – if we heed the warning signs and act now.

It’s Healthy and Happy Month (healthyandhappy. com) at The Hospital for Sick Children and this year the theme is centered around prevention of youth health issues.

Growing healthier children now will save much grief later in life when they become unhealthy adults fallen victim to the bad decisions made when young.

And all of this is increasingly our view taxing on the health care system – overburdened and underfunded Get motivated given increasing demands.

The hospital – affectionately to help raise known as SickKids – conducted a survey, and here’s an example of healthy kids what they found: w 56 per cent said society must do everything it can to improve the lifestyle of today’s children. w Bullying, obesity, child abuse, alcohol/drug abuse, suicide, depression all rank high in the minds of Canadians. w 78 per cent say children today are getting less exercise compared to their own childhood. w 65 per cent say children today have poorer eating habits. w 59 per cent say children are receiving less nutritional value in what they eat. w Mental illness is the second most concerning illness among young people.

Add to the fact that UNICEF ranks Canada 27th out of 29 industrialized nations on obesity. When that stat was shared, 21 per cent of Canadians said it motivated them to personal action.

That would amount to a significant amount of action, but it’s not enough. We hope through the stories you read in today’s themed edition and the stories you read online at www.insidetoronto.com or www. scarboroughmirror.com, you will be motivated to help preserve the health of young people who are part of your world.

This may be the first generation of Canadians who do not live as long as their parents. That’s a hard concept to accept in a society where we generally are able to control many of the threats to our children’s health.

We must not let that happen.

Getting in touch with our true nature

T

he phone rang bright and early Saturday morning.

It was my buddy Shawn inviting me up to a cottage he and his wife had rented in Algonquin Park for the holiday weekend.

He didn’t have to ask twice. I hustled out the door in a flash and was on their doorstep at 1 p.m. sharp.

I jubilantly honked several times to announce my arrival, but before I ambled inside I sprawled on the grass in front in awe of the surroundings: the Ontario wilderness in all its glory.

Rugged, majestic, untamed, unspoiled. I felt like I was smack-dab in the middle of a Tom Thomson watercolour.

I took a deep breath.

And another. And another.

I savoured each one. Is there anything more delicious than the taste of clean air? Is there anything more invigorating?

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY The aroma of the landscape was out of this world, too. The unique blend of birch bark and pine needles was positively intoxicating.

And the sky?

Fuggedaboutit.

I can’t remember the last time I’d ever seen it this dark shade of blue.

I had to put on my sunglasses it was so bright. I couldn’t stare at it without squinting.

No matter which way I looked, the scenery was spectacular. It was sheer joy to be in the presence of such beauty.

After I’d soaked it all in I closed my eyes and drifted away, imagining what I hoped would be in store for me on the weekend. A little hiking, some canoeing, a lot of stars at night, the northern lights if I get

really lucky, a campfire or two or three and best of all, coming face to face with the indigenous wildlife frolicking in their natural habitat.

Just the thought alone of the animals I might be crossing paths with put a lump in my throat.

Elegant white-tailed deer prancing about with their fawns, industrious beavers feverishly working away on their dams, exuberant ruffed grouse drumming on a log, chimney swifts soaring overhead, black bears rumbling through the woods, moose foraging in the brush.

And the piece de resistance? The ubiquitous common loons serenading one and all with their captivating yodeling melodies.

Oh, yeah. A guy could get used to this in a hurry.

A real hurry. It doesn’t get any better than this.

No doubt about it, there’s nothing like a

weekend roughing it in the wilderness of Algonquin Park to...

I was about to complete my final thought when I was awakened from my a daydream by an unmistakable thunderous roar.

It was Shawn with his arms folded standing at the door.

“Hey, nature boy,” he bellowed. “The Rangers/ Canadiens game is about to start and the pizza, wings, fries and onion rings are getting cold while you’re waxing rhapsodic out there. Wrap up the monologue pronto and get your butt in here or you going to miss the opening face-off.”

The great outdoors will have to wait, apparently. The not too shabby indoors beckons.

Jana Vordemberge and her husband David King are grateful that their five-monthold son Macallister is healthy and happy.

But the Scarborough residents know that not every child is as lucky.

Macallister’s two-year-old cousin Angel King had to have open-heart surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children when she was a newborn.

Now she too is doing well.

In September, Jana, David and Macallister will take part in the second annual Great Camp Adventure Walk to raise money for Sick Kids.

Macallister is currently the youngest registered participant.

“It’ll be a great experience.

He won’t remember it, but we’ll capture it with photographs,” Jana said. “It’ll be a fun memory for us as a family.”

Jana’s friend Amy Milne created the event last year; about 1,300 people participated and more than $1.3

million was raised. Jana also wanted to take part, but since she was six months pregnant, the adventure walk seemed a bit too ambitious.

Family event The family event involves a five, 10, 15 or 20 kilometre walk with fun-filled campsites along the way. The campsites offer games and activities designed to challenge and entertain.

“We’re really lucky that Macallister is a healthy baby that doesn’t need SickKids,” said Jana, adding it’s comforting to know though that there is such a “great facility here in Toronto.”

Macallister’s cousin, Angel underwent open-heart surgery at the hospital when she was just 10 days old.

“She now only has to go back once a year for a checkup, and she’s been doing amazing,” Jana said.

“She’s just a great little spunky girl and because of SickKids she can be happy and healthy now.”

More than 1,000 people are expected to take part in

this year’s adventure walk, which takes place in downtown Toronto on Sept. 27.

The route is wheelchair and stroller accessible.

The event raises money for the Possibilities Fund at SickKids, which supports people, programs, equipment and physical infrastructure, allowing the hospital to continue to be a world leader in patient care and research.

Macallister’s team hopes to raise $1,000 in the walk.

ing required for the project on a Birchmount Road vacant lot, which the City of Toronto sold to Habitat in 2010.

The city declared the land at the northeast corner of Highview Avenue surplus before offering it to Habitat as a site for affordable housing, a choice approved by the area’s former councillor, Brian Ashton, and by Toronto council as a whole in 2009.

After pressure from neighbours who see the lot as an unofficial park, the current councillor Gary Crawford said it should be referred back to the planning department to explore “all potential options,� including a swap for other city land. “This is not about Habitat for Humanity at all,� said Crawford, insist-

ing he supports the charity and has worked as a volunteer on some of its other Scarborough projects.

But Crawford agreed with residents that the city – which advertised the potential sale in a newspaper, and in 2012 notified the owners of adjacent homes – did not properly consult people in the Cliffside area about what to do with the land.

He told Scarborough Community Council he found out about the sale two years ago when Mayor Rob Ford approached his office about a ribbon-cutting Habitat had scheduled on the lot. “I had no idea what he was talking about,� said Crawford, adding he called Habitat to say, “There’s going to be no ribboncutting.�

The charity later held two community consultations in the area but those were “rather poor,� said the councillor, who said any solution to the impasse “will be up to Habitat,� though he favours turning the lot into parkland.

Several neighbours spoke Tuesday against the project, for which Habitat will pay the city $100,000 after it builds the eight semi-detached and one single detached home. “More concrete, less green space, is not what this community needs,� said Agnes Milne, who lives more than 200 metres away from the lot and said her concern was for a sugar maple there.

The maple is one of three mature trees and two immature ones the development would remove, though Habitat would plant 22 trees on the lot as replacements and seven more on the boulevard.

Sue Mason, another resident, said she was “absolutely gobsmacked� to hear of the plan to destroy a green space she loves. The lot should have been designated a park when the chance came, she said.

Mason and other Cliffside residents recalled Crawford managed to prevent the sale of vacant land – nearby on Danforth Avenue across from Variety Village – known as the sugar bowl or fish bowl, which the city in 2011 declared surplus. Crawford later announced the land was no longer surplus.

David Bronskill, a lawyer for Habitat, said the Birchmount land was never considered as a possible park.

Despite objections the proposed semi-detached Habitat homes don’t fit the neighbourhood, they are single-family homes no different from others in Cliffside and city staff agree the project is “appropriate,� he argued. “On its planning merits, it is a no-brainer,� Bronskill concluded, adding the Ontario Municipal Board would think so too.

Habitat Greater Toronto Area CEO Ene Underwood, who joined the organization after the sale, said she realizes long-term residents would be “very much taken aback,� but suggested it wasn’t Habitat’s

fault there was no neighbourhood consultation in 2008.

The homes – occupied by people who helped build them and have a track record of employment – will be a good thing for the area, even if the consultation process was flawed, she said. “There are things we could have done differently in a past we can’t change,� said Underwood, who added Crawford’s land swap idea “will not move us forward� in meeting Toronto’s goals for affordable housing.

Norm Kelly, Toronto’s acting mayor, said the city sold the land to Habitat for housing, so “we are legally and ethically committed� to honouring the deal.

The Scarborough-Agincourt councillor called Crawford’s desire for a swap “a proposal which is basically a wing and a prayer,� and said he won’t support deferral unless Crawford comes up with a proposed solution between now and the next city council meeting.

transit reaches labour agreements wTTC The TTC has reached labour agreements with four unions representing around 10,000 of its employees.

The new four-year-contracts with the unions – including Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) 113 – were settled without proceeding to arbitration for the first time since 2008, notes a press release issued by the TTC over the Victoria Day weekend.

Not many details are known about the new deals, although vehicle operators, fare collectors as well as maintenance workers will receive a pay raise of just over eight per cent over the life of the contract.

Non-unionized workers will also receive slight pay increases. There are provisions to restrict job outsourcing.

Metrolinx has toned down its communications with the provincial election campaign in full swing.

Griffin Centre: Doug Ford not the only NIMBY Whilst his brother cavorts about cottage country on day passes from addiction rehabilitation, it’s reassuring to see that Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford is keeping up the Ford name and all it stands for here in the city.

As the Etobicoke Guardian’s Tamara Shephard reported last week, Doug Ford showed up – late – for a meeting at Toronto police’s 23 Division, to take on the Griffin Centre, a home for developmentally disabled youth on behalf of its angry neighbours.

According to Shephard’s report, Ford told the staff of the centre that they had “ruined the community” in the Kipling Avenue and West Humber Boulevard area.

The two-month-old centre is a house where four youth – some with autism – live under supervision. Some of the youth have behavioural issues that manifest in outbursts sometimes requiring police to attend. The staff at the centre sometimes park on the street. Sometimes, the youth who live in the centre are permitted outdoors.

It was this last point that

david nickle the city seemed to shock the councillor, whom Shephard quotes thusly: “You can’t destroy a community like this. People have worked 30 years for their home... My heart goes out to kids with autism. But no one told me they’d be leaving the house. If it comes down to it, I’ll buy the house myself and resell it.”

Later, he asked if any of the children were sex offenders (for the record: staff at the centre said none of them are).

It’s difficult to know what to say about Doug and Rob Ford anymore. They have so debased the public discourse in the past year, that even when one of them passes an evening by stirring up an angry crowd to run a house for disabled youth out of town, it’s hard to properly admonish him.

The men are scoundrels. We know it and they know it.

But let’s leave Doug alone a moment, and ponder some of the other comments that

Shephard collected last Thursday night from those in attendance.

“This is not a place for mental people. This is a residential area. Why don’t you build a house out on a farm?”

“When my child says, ‘Mommy, why are there police here again?’ What do I say?”

“This is a community for people, not for that.”

Councillor Ford’s remarks ride the crest of that wave of unfortunate NIMBYism – and one might argue that his and his brother’s reign at Toronto City Hall were propelled by the same poisonous sentiment.

In October, odds are good that voters will send the brothers Ford from Toronto City Hall – probably for good.

But the insular, fearful, uncompassionate and fundamentally selfish sentiment on display at 23 Division last week – the sentiment that allowed the Fords in to begin with – it will take a great many years to rid ourselves of that.

Parents must be role models in fight against Type 2 diabetes

I

n Scarborough, adultonset diabetes isn’t just for adults anymore.

Increasingly, this chronic disease, also called Type 2 diabetes, is being seen locally in teenagers and even in younger children, leading to devastating consequences for them later in life.

The power to stop the emergence of Type 2 in children lies with this parents community who are story willing to inspired by change the the goal lifestyles of of having their famihappy, lies before healthy it’s too late, children experts in diet and diabetes here said in interviews.

“We tell parents: you control what happens in your house,” said Johanna Balge, a registered dietician at the Pediatric Diabetes Clinic at Rouge Valley Health System’s Centenary campus.

“You have to be strong and stick with it.”

The clinic, which treats children up to age 18, now sees 30 to 40 a year diagnosed with Type 2 - “quite a large number,” Balge said, considering it’s supposed to be a disease that doesn’t affect you until you’re much older.

The youngest Type 2 patient she’s seen was seven.

Scarborough has higher rates of diabetes than the rest of Toronto. What partly explains this is the ethnic mix of its residents, which

includes many people of African and South Asian descent, groups with a higher genetic risk of developing Type 2.

Free counselling is available outside of hospitals for adults with Type 2 - or for those who are at risk of Type 2 and “pre-diabetic,” or overweight and with a family history of the disease - but these governmentmandated programs are not meant to tackle the more common appearance of Type 2 in children. health centres Diabetes educators at Scarborough’s community health centres are trying to adjust by bringing children of their clients into the conversation, telling parents they must be role models to keep their offspring - who usually share their bad eating and exercise habits from getting Type 2.

“I tell the parents, ‘This is not only for you. This is for your entire family,’” said Suboshana Sara, diabetes nurse educator at the Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities.

A child usually doesn’t buy or prepare much food, so educating a family on healthy eating often means finding out who buys groceries in a family, and who cooks them, she said. eat “The child is going to eat whatever the mum cooks.”

Besides genetics, it’s obesity and a lack of daily exercise that causes childhood appearances of Type 2, a disease which produces complications including vision loss, stroke, heart

attack and foot ulcers.

The good news is making small changes to a child’s diet and physical activity regimen can stack up large in helping them avoid the disease.

“We can start when they are five, not when they are 50,” said Sara.

and teach moderation don’t treat certain foods as completely “off limits,” but stress the family should eat healthy 90 per cent of the time, Balge said.

She recognizes getting a child to eat more vegetables can be a struggle, that teenagers “are very here and now,” making it hard for them to see consequences later in life, and that unhealthy food is cheap - often an issue where lower-income families in Scarborough are concerned.

When both parents in a family work and commute, “it makes it difficult to be the monitor of everything that’s happening at home,” Balge added.

On the other hand, she sometimes wonders whether parents of her patients realize how serious Type 2 is. “Sometimes I hear (them) say, ‘They’ll grow out of it.’”

She carries a bottle of water everywhere and usually doesn’t buy her children juice - it’s full of sugar, stoking their desire to drink more, and crashing their energy level after their blood sugar spikes and quickly drops, she said.

“The only thing they’re going to get (after drinking juice) is hyper.”

or an apple: it has less sugar, more fibre, and it will be in their system longer. fast food She still goes to fast food restaurants once with her family, she said - once in a while.

“We share the fries,” Sara said. “We don’t buy separate combos for everybody and we don’t really buy the pop. We buy the milk for them.”

Sidewalks in Birch Cliff be replaced wto New sidewalks laid last summer in Birch Cliff as part of a Kingston Road reconstruction appear to be defective, but the contractor which did the job has agreed to replace them, Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford says.

Residents and business owners noticed a lot of spalling patches where the concrete was pitted, flaking off or breaking on the surface - last month on the sidewalks, which are between Birchmount Road and Warden Avenue.

Community complaints about the damage, typically in places where salt or de-icing fluid was used over the winter, prompted both the City of Toronto and its contractor, Sanscon Construction, to investigate over the last month.

Tests continue, but the problem appears to be in aggregate used in the concrete, said Crawford this week. “It shouldn’t have happened.”

The contractor has promised to replace all the sidewalks over three months, working on one side of the road at a time to lessen inconvenience, added Crawford.

Sanscon is using a different supplier for the second portion of the reconstruction project, which covers Kingston from Warden to Victoria Park Avenue this year, he said.

Councillors reject bid to change name of Alexmuir Park The man who wrote the Maple Leaf Forever is staying on in a north Scarborough park.

A local ratepayers group and Scarborough-Rouge River Councillor Chin Lee had supported a proposal earlier this year to rename Alexmuir Park after Valerie Plunkett, a community volunteer who died in 2011, as well as the surrounding Rosewood neighbourhood.

In January, Lee presented a petition with 362 signatures in favour of calling the Alexmuir Boulevard green space the Rosewood Valerie Plunkett Park.

A survey by Toronto’s parks department, however, found the neighbourhood was evenly split on the change and concluded it “does not have widespread support.”

A letter to the city signed by some residents said they did not believe one active community member, Plunkett, “should have the privilege of overriding a longstanding historical figure in Canadian history, Alexander Muir.”

At a meeting of Scarborough Community Council recently, Lee said he would work with staff and people in Rosewood to find other appropriate

ways to honour Plunkett, who founded the Rosewood Taxpayers’ Association and was chairperson of the Toronto Police 42 Division Community Police Liaison Committee.

“This is something the community has to want,” the councillor said later.

Scarborough councillors approved a proposal to review renaming Avalon Parkette on Kingston Road as Bill Belfontaine Parkette, after a former Scarborough politician who lived nearby.

A multi-service Agincourt community hub cleared an important hurdle recently as Scarborough councillors approved a zoning change that was required for the project.

The $29-million centre in the Bridlewood neighbourhood would provide everything from recreation and

arts programs to outpatient medical and settlement services.

Including space for The Scarborough Hospital and perhaps a dozen commmunity agencies, the 126,000-squarefoot hub would be developed by the YMCA in partnership with the City of Toronto and United Way Toronto.

The city used $6 million from a reserve fund in 2012 to conditionally buy part of the former Timothy Eaton High School property on Bridletowne Circle south of Finch Avenue, and the United Way would contribute $2 mil-

lion.

The YMCA and area residents are fully behind “what I think will be the best community centre in the City of Toronto, not just in the east end,” Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Norm Kelly, Toronto’s acting mayor, said before the vote.

No one at the Scarborough Community Council meeting opposed the zoning change.

A total of 282 townhouses and stacked townhouses are separately proposed for the southern portion of the old school site.

A recent CIBC poll suggests nearly one-third of small business owners in Ontario don’t have contingency plans in case of severe weather incidents.

The Ontario number (31 per cent) is slightly lower than the national average of 35 per cent.

According to the poll, 23 per cent of Ontario small business owners are reevaluating their business interruption plans. The province was hit hard by ice storms this past winter.

“While more small business owners are thinking about contingency plans, the reality is most need a plan in place to ensure they can withstand business interruptions without draining their personal savings,” said Shelley Swanlund of CIBC.

Man charged in connection with theft of neck chains in Scarborough A man faces charges in connection with three chaingrab robberies in north Scarborough.

Police allege a 63-year-old visually impaired man was walking through a park on Bridletowne Circle when a man approached him from behind around 5 p.m. on May 5.

The victim was knocked to the ground as his necklace was stolen.

The robbery was caught on sur veillance video, which police later released to the media.

At 7:05 p.m. May 8, a 33-yearold woman was walking home from Bridletowne Mall with her young child when a man followed her, grabbed a gold chain from around her neck and ran away.

At 3:06 p.m. May 11, a 50-year-old woman was crossing the intersection of Finch

Avenue and Middlefield Road when a man grabbed a gold chain from around her neck and fled through a nearby park. The woman gave chase and took a picture of the man as he got into a car.

A man was arrested later in the day.

“A search warrant was executed on his home and evidence relating to the robberies was recovered,” police alleged in a news release

Friday.

Deshayne Newman, 19, of Toronto has been charged with three counts of robbery and three counts of failing to comply with probation.

Tell us about your background and qualifications?

Malvern has seen improvements since the Summer of the Gun in 2005, but the neighbourhood has recorded seven homicides since 2009 and a young mother was shot and killed last month. How can you prevent a resurgence of violence?

■ Since I was elected 25 years ago, I have been an unwavering advocate for subways in Scarborough. I will continue to advocate for an expansion of the Bloor-Danforth line and then the Sheppard line, connecting at the Scarborough Town Centre as a transit hub.

■ In 1985, founded SHAFT that achieved lower taxes for over 80 per cent of residents in the riding, then worked 17 years as City Councillor for Ward 41 with 10 years experience on budget committees. In 2001, I single-handily uncovered the MFP computer-leasing scandal, despite Mr. Cho voting against my resolution for a forensic audit of the contract. I was elected MPP in 2005 and re-elected twice (2007, 2011).

Delivered the TAIBU Community Health Centre ($3.2 million), secured land and funding for the new Malvern Family Resources Centre.

■ I am very proud that Malvern is no longer a priority neighbourhood and I will continue my work with local police to improve and solve incidents of crime. A large part of why crime has declined in Malvern is because of major strategic investments by the Ontario Liberal government since 2006. These investments include improved community social programs, youth employment initiatives and delivering programs like Malvern Youth Community Employment Program, Toronto Police Employment for youth in targeted neighbourhoods.

■ Today, jobs in Ontario are hard to come by - we have a jobs crisis in this province that affects all of us, especially those wanting off welfare. My priority will be to champion jobs in Scarborough-Rouge River. I believe work provides each of us with a feeling of self-worth, dignity, the independence and means to follow our individual aspirations. High employment brings about economic prosperity, safe and stable communities. I will fight in our caucus to make sure that real job opportunities are brought to Scarborough-Rouge River.

■ Traffic congestion not only takes away from our quality of life, it makes our businesses inefficient and uncompetitive because employees and goods take so long to get from point A to point B. Everyone knows this problem is particularly acute in Scarborough. Traffic congestion in the GTA costs $6 billion annually in productivity.

That’s why as a Toronto City Councillor and a TTC commissioner, I have strongly supported replacing the old SRT with a subway. I fully support building subways from Mississauga to Scarborough and beyond.

■ I emigrated to Canada from the Republic of Korea in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts degree; I pursued and obtained my Master of Social Work, Master of Education. and eventually Doctorate of Counseling Psychology from the University of Toronto. Before I was elected, I worked as a professional social worker for the TDSB. I was first elected to Metropolitan Toronto Council in the ward of Scarborough-Malvern in 1991.

Since then, I have been reelected six consecutive times to serve as a Toronto councillor and have served on almost every committee.

■ No one can singlehandedly prevent resurgence of the gun violence. But if we work together, we can avert it. As the local councillor, I have worked with all the community groups and a number of faith groups, as well as, all the government agencies to unite the community to fight the gangs and outside groups that infiltrated Malvern for their illegal activities. I am proud that I have been able to achieve this first milestone in moving Malvern forward. But our work is not finished. We still need to work together to move further forward.

■ I would champion local jobs. The NDP will reward businesses that create local jobs through our Job Creation Tax Credit. Our Job Creator Tax Credit is worth 10 per cent of the salary of new hires up to a maximum of $5,000. By investing $250 million over two years we will create 170,000 new jobs within this province. Our plan to cut the small business tax rate by three per cent will further encourage job-creation. This community has a strong labour force that is attractive to different manufacturing companies – let’s draw them in with incentives.

■ It’s time for a government that makes sense on transit. Working families can’t afford to waste more time and money stuck in traffic jams or packed like sardines on buses. As transportation minister, Liberal leader Kathleen Wynne slashed $4 billion from transit and eliminated funding for buses. After a decade of broken promises the Liberals can’t be trusted. The NDP will deliver transit relief to Scarborough. We will get started on the Downtown Relief Line and clean trains to the air-rail link. We will deliver the transit relief Scarborough needs.

■ I am a former York Region District School Board trustee and have delivered results including serving more than 115,000 studnets, managing a $1-billion-plus budget and launching seven new after-school programs. I’m currently the executive director of the Council of Agencies Serving South Asians, and have received numerous awards for being a leader in the community on issues such as anti-drug and anti-gang initiatives.

I was a long-time host of an interactive and informative television program on Tamil Vision International (TV).

■ Preventing youth violence is important.

Youth need recognition in safe, positive spaces so that they don’t seek it in negative environments. Education and community support are paramount to keep our children safe. But Liberal cuts to education have led to school closures and less access to educational supports. The NDP would stand up for adequately funded schools and work to make them community hubs. As a former youth worker I helped create processes to resolve conflict among youth.

■ Education. Too many young Canadians are growing up in an environment where they are not aware of the serious impact education has on their future. The current curriculum is leaving some students behind, as they are not engaged in the subject material being taught, therefore they are not interested in applying themselves into the work, and some may drop out or deliver poor performance. I think that with the right approach we can find students engaged in their education in a more significant way that will yield positive results for them, their families and our economy.

■ I suggest making the Sunday subway start times in line with the rest of the week. Currently the Sunday subway starts after 9 a.m. which makes it difficult for some people who work on weekends and need to travel downtown.

In addition, I suggest a close examination of the bus schedules, and a concerted effort to reschedule bus routes that have three or four buses in a row that are empty, while at other times it can be a 20-30 minute wait for a bus.

TTC inspectors and planners should ensure an even constant flow of buses on busy routes to avoid overcrowding and long wait times.

■ I am qualified for this position because of the wide range of my experience and my youth, combined with my maturity. I am a single parent and understand the challenges of raising a child on your own. I have lived with and support parents who have become disabled in their later years, and understand the needs of this community. I have been through all levels of education and understand the needs of the modern student. I am also an entrepreneur and understand what government support means to local businesses.

■ Through music programs I have worked on since 1993 I have come to understand the issues that lead to the environment that creates violent behaviour. Only with constant support, education, and opportunities can these incidents be stopped. Having a strong foundation in education is the first step, and that is the reason why I want to champion education. The other issue that creates these situations are drug and alcohol abuse, and poverty. Residents must be able to receive support that gears their mind into a way of thinking that emphasizes co-operation and communal advancement.

Scarborough player one step closer to playing in World Cup A 26-year-old Scarborough born and raised soccer player who just finished his second season with Swansea City in the English Premier League is one step closer to the World Cup. Jonathan de Guzman, who played his first eight years in the Scarborough soccer system, and who boasts a gold medal from Scarborough’s prestigious Robbie soccer tournament, made the Netherland’s 30-man preliminary roster announced last week.

Ironically, his older brother 33-year-old Julian de Guzman, a former Toronto FC player now playing in Greece’s top division, this week has once again joined the Canadian national team in Austria for a couple of upcoming friendlies on May 23 against Bulgaria and May 27 against Moldova.

Julian blazed the path, heading overseas when he was 16 to further his soccer career.

Jonathan, however, was only 12 when he went overseas to suit up for the youth academy of famed Dutch club Feyenoord – and basically never looked back. He earned his Dutch citizenship in 2008. He has been capped eight times by the senior national team.Jonathan’s last school in Scarborough was St. Rose of Lima Catholic School and he suited up with North Scarborough Soccer Club teams from four until 12 years of age. By that time he was playing with 16-year-olds. ‘Winds of change’ buoy rainbow flag flying over city hall, PFLAG president says DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The rainbow flag flew over Toronto City Hall Friday afternoon — buoyed, according to outgoing PFLAG president Irene Miller, by “the winds of change.”

Miller, who is leaving Parents and Friends of Lesbian and Gay children this year, delivered a blistering speech at the flag rais-

ing for International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia on May 16. In it, she directly called out Mayor Rob Ford for his attempts in February to have the rainbow flag taken down, when the city raised it to support LGBT athletes taking part in the Socchi Winter Olympics.

“I’ve stood here year after year, listening to a proclamation being read ensuring that anybody LGBT was welcome

in Toronto,” said Miller. “Well apparently not everyone understood that message because during Socchi in February of this year, while cities around the world and in Canada were flying the rainbow flag, Mayor Ford was repeatedly demanding it be taken down.”

Ford, who is currently on a leave of absence from his job as mayor to deal with problems with alcohol, was

not present at the flag raising event.

Last year, he did attend the event after refusing to participate in the Pride Parade for much of the term.

This year, Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly read the proclamation. Miller singled out Kelly for praise, for his decision to meet with her during the controversy over Ford’s attempts to have the flag removed in February.

She urged those present to “take pride.”

“I think those of you who are here recognize that the flag is more than a piece of fabric,” she said.

“It really truly means something to all who recognize the struggle that goes together in those colors, to make it a symbol of hope, support, love and acceptance. It is more than just a piece of cloth and should never be disrespected

in such a horrible way.”

Miller went on to urge Torontonians to fight against bigotry in all its forms.

Following the flag raising, Deputy Mayor Kelly said that he understood the sentiments expressed towards Mayor Ford.

Tell us about your background and qualifications?

The city this year classified five neighbourhoods wholly are partly within the riding as “improvement areas” because they fall below a neighbourhood equity benchmark.

As an MPP, what can you do about this?

■ Jobs are the number one concern and priority for the people of this riding. Speaking to constituents, I assure them that our government is committed to creating more jobs and growth and I’m proud to explain how this will impact Scarborough Southwest. For example cutting taxes for 60,000 more small businesses by reforming the Employer Health Tax and removing it from 90 per cent of small businesses. Another great example is the Youth Jobs Strategy, which will create 30,000 jobs for youth aged 15-29 over the next two years.

■ Investing in transit is a key component of our plan for Scarborough. I understand how important it is for families to spend more time together, and less time on the road. Building a seamless integrated transportation network across this province and in particular across Scarborough is essential to that. For years, I have continuously advocated for moving forward with the Scarborough subway, leading to a commitment from the government to extend the Bloor-Danforth (Line 2) subway east.

■ Prior to being your MPP, I served five terms as a city councillor. My call to public service came early, after graduating from law school in 1988; I decided to run for elected office to do more for our wonderful community. I have dedicated the last 25 years to serve the needs of this community and I have worked tirelessly to fight for the issues that are important here. I am proud to represent our riding of Scarborough Southwest and to be your voice at Queen’s Park since 2003.

■ I love my neighbourhood, it is a growing and thriving community. It has been a pleasure to be part of the process of improving it over the last two decades and seeing firsthand the progress we’ve been able to make. Working closely with the local municipal councillors of Ward 35 and Ward 36 on collaborative projects, between the province and the city, has been an important part of these developments. However, I understand there is still work ahead of us.

Affordable and secure housing, for instance, provides the stability needed to raise families.

■ As the MPP for Scarborough Southwest, I will be your ally at the provincial level and will work to ensure that we build the transit infrastructure that is desperately needed here.

Political interference paralyzes transit growth and wastes our tax dollars with unnecessary delays. Businesses and residents need a solid plan of sustainable, dedicated transit funding so that riding residents and people throughout the region, can move and conduct business. Transit expansion and associated urban planning go hand in hand.

■ Toronto must build the right transit, in the right areas, for the right reasons. Where density, ridership, and growth forecasts meet, we should build the required transit to allow for more walkable communities, and to ease the commute times of transit riders and drivers alike. There are numerous examples of global cities that effectively use a mix of bus-rapid transit lines (BRTs), light-rail transit (LRTs), and subways to serve their residents. These lessons can improve the lives of residents in Scarborough Southwest.

■ I was born and raised in Scarborough, and have been fascinated with urban development from a young age. My thinking about transit needs for a city have been heavily influenced by the writing of the urban visionary Jane Jacobs. I am motivated to run for the Green Party out of extreme frustration related to the indecisiveness and poor planning principles shown by the other parties. Toronto needs a stable, reliable, and longterm source of transit funding; the current status quo of the city begging the province for one-off transit dollars is simply not working.

■ As Canada’s largest city and economic engine, Toronto has special needs that the province must recognize. We are a magnet for new immigrants and those in society who are often marginalized. We can and must do better for our neighbours. Working closely with the city and various agencies, we will create attainable goals and timelines to ensure that Scarborough Southwest is a healthy community built upon a foundation of strong local connections and mutual support.

■When I’m knocking on doors, one issue I hear time and time again from seniors is a desire to live in the comfort of their own homes as long as possible. As MPP, I will champion an expansion of home care service and adding more types of care in the home. Home care that is more easily accessible means people won’t be forced into long-term care before they need it or into a hospital unnecessarily. My focus will be to provide quality health care in the most efficient way possible.

■ We have over 60 subway stations in Toronto and only three in Scarborough. I was fighting for a subway over two years ago, when I delivered a petition to Queen’s Park in 2012 calling for subway expansion. The Ontario PC Party is committed to expanding the Scarborough subway line, building an east-west Downtown Relief Line, and expanding GO Train service. GO Transit will have more rush hour service, express trains, and all day, two-way service. Our plan will not raise taxes by making transit the top priority in the existing $12 billion capital budget.

■ As a small business owner in the real estate industry, I work with my clients to understand and address their needs. I sit on the Toronto Real Estate Board Government Relations Committee where I advocate for realtor-related policy that is beneficial to Ontario’s economy. For two years, I served as the managing director of the Toronto Taxpayers Coalition where I strongly advocated for lower taxes, responsible spending, and smaller government at city hall. Seeing the financial mismanagement from the Liberals, I decided to fight for sound fiscal policy.

■ I’ve spoken with many residents in Scarborough Southwest that are having great difficulty finding work. As MPP, I will make it easier for people, especially our youth, to get jobs in the skilled trades. We will do away with cumbersome and outdated apprenticeship rules that limit the number of job opportunities in the trades and we will make trades training a community college course like any other. I’m proud that our Million Jobs Plan will remove barriers, helping connect workers with 200,000 opportunities in the skilled trades.

■ There are many local issues that are important to residents in our community. As the MPP I am planning to champion change. I am planning to bring new energy and engage our community in a new way. Too many youth are disengaged with politicians because they do not deliver on their promises and many people have lost hope in government because of wasteful scandals and complacency. It’s important that politicians respect the voters and it will be my honour to represent our residents delivering what they deserve.

■ It’s time for politicians to actually deliver on transit improvements. There has been too much talk and not enough action. As a candidate that actually takes transit as my primary source of transportation it will give me a great sense of pride to deliver and improve transit. Transit affects everyone, better transit means more time with our families, less time in traffic and that more people will be inclined to take the TTC. That means that roads will be less congested for all of those who drive. Transit makes sense for everyone, as your MPP I would strive to get better transit for riding residents.

■ I have a strong roots in the Scarborough community and have worked for a family business in the area for years. Having worked in conflict mediation, I know how to build consensus in order to get things done. Studying French, Italian, Spanish and Farsi reflect my commitment to improving and demonstrate my appreciation for culture and diversity. I understand the problems facing youth in our community and being young myself, want to involve as many youth as possible within the political process.

■ Equity is one of the foremost principles of the NDP and part of my motivation for running.

While recognizing that some of our areas need special attention it is important to recognize and repair the systemic issues and barriers in our neighbourhoods. Poverty, racialization, inequity, and marginalization are effecting many people and we have to get real about eliminating barriers, eradicating poverty and restoring social systems.

Scarborough Titans Tektonics girls win national championship Team takes 2014 Canadian Open East National title The Scarborough Titans Te k t o n i c s g i r l s vo l l e yball team won the 2014 Canadian Open East National Championships earlier this month held in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

The team played 10 matches during the tournament, losing only one. Only two of the matches went into three sets, while the rest were won by two straight sets.

The tournament featured teams from Quebec, Nova Scotia and Ontario.

In the quar ter finals, Scarborough won against the Aurora Storm Typhoon 25-17, 22-25 and 15-12.

Scarborough played against Durham Attack Black from Oshawa in the semifinals and beat them in two sets, 25-22 and 25-23.

In the gold medal, division 1, tier 1 match, the Tektonics

played against the South County Teal Bandits from Windsor and won 19-25, 25-16 and 15-10.

This season the team has won five gold medals and a silver medal.

In the 14U Provincial Championships, the Tektonics finished in sixth place out of 93 teams. In the 15U Provincial Championships, the Tektonics finished as the highest ranking 14U team in the top tier of play, placing 11th out of 91 teams.

Two other Scarborough Titans teams also competed at the Canadian Open East National Championships.

The Scarborough Titans Dynasty 16U Girls team took silver in 16U girls division 1, tier 1 and the Scarborough Titans Nemesis 16U boys team finished fourth in 16U boys division 1, tier 1.

They address questions and provide advice on how to get the most out of their prescriptions. Seniors are checked for any adverse reactions to medication and are introduced to the bubble packs—a medication management system available to Royalton Retirement Home residents, as well as the general public.

The service requires the pharmacist to distributes medication into a bubble pack, separated by day and time of day.
