Three 18-year-old males were arrested early yesterday after police executed three search warrants at Scarborough’s Chester Le townhouse complex in relation to a robbery and a shooting last week.

Police allege a male was robbed of jewelry last Thursday afternoon at Bridlewood Mall near Finch and Warden avenues.

“There was a related shooting several hours later in the Chester Le (Boulevard) and Morecambe Gate area,” Det. Sgt. Gerry Heaney said.

Police believe two to three shots were fired at a vehicle, hitting a young man inside and narrowly missing a nineyear-old boy sitting beside him, around 8:10 p.m.

“It’s very fortunate that we are not dealing with one or two homicides,” said Heaney, of 42 Division. >>>MALES, page 30

Sixteen families in India will be able to create their own sustainable income while receiving the much-needed nourishment they deserve, all thanks to students at Burrows Hall Public School.

Recently, students were presented with special certificates after they raised enough money for 16 goats in 22 days as part of Free The Children’s We Create Change campaign.

“I used some of my birthday money to buy these goats,” said Grade 2 student Ishani Maraj.

“I wanted to help these families to get milk to drink and sell so they can have a better life. We’re blessed to have a good life in Canada.”

We Create Change is a campaign initiated through a partnership between Free The Children and the Royal Bank of Canada. It looks to raise funds in a school for the purchase of goats to provide families with nutrition and income.

“The purpose is to empower farming communities so they have alternative income opportunities,” said Grade 5 and 6 teacher Carmen Oliveira.

oronto has a well-deserved reputation for its diverse offering of arts and cultural festivals.

These are events that showcase a wide range of talents, skills and backgrounds – and they provide an important economic boost as well.

The city’s Cultural Hotspot program, in its second year, is a welcome addition to Toronto’s cultural programming that gives a specific area of the city an increased profile. This year, the spotlight is on centralsouth Etobicoke and the artistic, cultural and heritage events taking place in that community from now through October.

The concept is straight-forward enough: use a series of signature community projects to inspire residents and visitors to discover the area’s arts, culture, food, businesses, heritage and more. our view This year, examples of events include the Dancing in the Third performance and Lakeshore Spotlight on Act Mardi Gras as well as community culture good events related to the upcoming Pan Am Games. for all of us Benefits of this kind of focused program include an increased profile as well as greater co-ordination of multiple events – for diversity of interested participants and to help events that may otherwise struggle to get exposure.

For residents of the neighbourhoods, the program is an opportunity to forge a greater connection to their community and for folks who live in other parts of the city, it’s an opportunity to glean a greater understanding of Toronto’s diverse communities.

Last year, the Cultural Hotspot program was in the neighbourhoods of south Scarborough, with signature projects such as the Taste of Lawrence, Guild Alive with Culture and the Port Union Waterfront Festival.

We hope the program’s continuation inspires new arts and cultural endeavours and helps develop a civic reputation as a global arts and cultural centre.

Change is a reality in this city. Toronto’s population is growing and is becoming increasingly diverse. As the city continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how younger generations reshape the city’s cultural identity based on the more global influences of today.

Giving our communities an opportunity for greater exposure from an increased breadth of arts and culture can only enhance that.

Memories of Mom and a very special date I was watching the Blue Jays/Red Sox game in a sports bar with a youngish group from work last Friday night and at the end when the announcer said that the 7-0 shutout was the Jays’ 3,000th win, I bragged that I remembered victory number one.

It was on April 7, 1977, to be exact. I should know, I was there.

A hush fell over the room.

Then I proceeded to dazzle the crowd with the game highlights.

Moms were the topic du jour with Mother’s Day fast approaching and I proudly proclaimed that the most memorable one for me hands down was who I went with: my mom. The stunning revelation elicited a chorus of “ahhhs.”

A few roses were tossed my way, as well. I blew kisses back to the crowd.

It wasn’t just the Jays home opener, I continued.

It was their first game ever.

It was pretty surreal stuff.

It took place at Exhibition

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Stadium. There was no Rogers Centre back then. No SkyDome, either, the current home’s original handle.

More than 44,000 fans took it in. But quite a few missed the first pitch due to – wait for it – traffic jams.

It was pretty cold and it snowed before the game.

The maintenance crew had to squeegee it off the field before the action could start.

The 48th Highlanders played The Star Spangled Banner. Anne Murray sang O Canada.

The crowd occasionally chanted “We Want Beer” because Exhibition Stadium did not allow the sale of suds. It was the only stadium in the league not to do it.

For the record, I didn’t chant. Neither did Mom. Roy Hartsfield was the Jays manager and our boys

of summer beat the Chicago White Sox 9-5 on a wintry day. That’s baseball, as they say.

Bill Singer was the starting pitcher. Jerry Johnson got the win. Pete Vuckovich got the save. Alvis Woods belted a home run and Doug Ault smacked a pair.

In summation, a good time was had by all. And that’s about it.

“Any questions?” I asked with a smug look on my face.

There was complete silence at first. None in the group could believe what they had just heard. Then they all chimed in. “You know, you’re dating yourself Jamie,” they each replied, one after another. “You’re really dating yourself.”

Well, I was aghast. I couldn’t believe what I just heard.

Here I was taking them on a heart-warming stroll down baseball memory lane, then, being young people, seemingly always preoccupied with relation-

ships, they had to change the subject. The nerve of them. Well, I wasn’t about to let that remark pass by.

“Dating myself, puhlease. We’re not even Facebook friends, for heaven’s sake. We’re barely casual acquaintances. Don’t believe everything you read on Twitter.

“And that selfie I took with myself? Come on. A child of four knows that was a completely harmless photo. We’re not even looking at each other in it.

“And don’t waste your time commenting on my unauthorized autobiography, either. It’s not worth reading. Not a word of it is true. Heck, not one letter of it is true.

Trust me. The moment the book comes out, I’m suing myself. For everything I’ve got.”

here was good news for the Ford family at Mount Sinai Hospital this week: Rob Ford, father, son, husband, city councillor and former mayor came through a difficult surgery as well as can be expected.

Really, this is not big news for the city — except of course it is.

Rob Ford has become a gravitational singularity for Toronto municipal news.

Reporters across town were on tenterhooks, waiting to find out how things went for the councillor for Ward 2 and his eight-month battle with cancer. Ford’s affable executive assistant Dan Jacobs took the point on Monday, providing regular updates as to the progress of the 10-hour surgery, and then on Tuesday with details of his boss’ recovery.

As I write this, it looks pretty good.

City councillors have had health challenges before, but rarely have their issues gathered such attention.

Rob Ford will be off work

david nickle the city for four months. Ward 44 Councillor Ron Moeser was off work for much longer than that, dealing with the complications from surgery on his ankle during the last term. But few noticed.

Of course, Moeser is no Rob Ford. In many respects, Moeser ought not mind that he’s not: Ford’s fame comes in part from his mayoralty, but in larger part for his sins.

And they are still in it.

In the next four months, Ford’s brother Doug — who last term was Ford’s replacement in Ward 2, political wing-man and eventually replacement in his mayoral re-election bid — will be back on the job, as a volunteer in the Ward 2 office.

Again, under ordinary circumstances this is no big deal. Lots of councillors put their families to work

either in their offices as volunteers or on the ground in the ward. Doug won’t be back on council, won’t be shaping policy, probably won’t even be in the office that much. He’ll just be helping out.

Except, of course, it won’t be that simple.

If Doug Ford doesn’t insert himself into political debates and personality politics, then we in the media will pull him on stage. Rob has made it clear as his health improves, so too does the prospect that he’ll be making a play for a second term as mayor in 2018, and a part of the next four months will be an exercise in making certain that the Ford name remains in the public eye.

Doug, who last term took to scrums like the proverbial duck to water, will be doing his best to make sure our gaze doesn’t falter.

‘Panamania’ will coincide with Toronto 2015 Games JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com While the impressive feats of athletes from across the Americas will be front and centre when the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games descend on the city, the Games will bring plenty more to the community.

Panamania, a 35-day celebration of arts and culture featuring top local and international performers, will coincide with the Games, with live shows at Nathan Phillips Square, the Distillery District, the grounds at Exhibition Place and a number of other locations in Toronto and beyond.

The arts and culture celebration was unveiled last Wednesday at the Berkeley Street Theatre near Front and Parliament streets.

Given Toronto’s diversity, many of the acts are local, though they will certainly offer an international feel, providing a taste of home for athletes visiting from other countries and for new Canadians alike.

“We have talent here in Ontario that can make up that cultural richness and we don’t have to go far to find it,” said Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Michael Coteau.

Nathan Phillips Square will host the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games opening ceremonies presented by Cirque du Soleil on July 10, with daily concerts, medal ceremonies and fireworks displays running from that day until July 26 (the Pan Am Games) and again from Aug. 7 to 12 (the Parapan Am Games).

All events in the square will be free.

The CIBC Pan Am Park, located at Exhibition Place, will offer a massive street party, with concerts, food and fun from July 11 to 25.

Those events are also free.

The CIBC Pan Am Park will host ticketed sports events as well, including volleyball, rugby and gymnastics.

The Distillery District, meanwhile, will provide sights, sounds and tastes from across the Americas from July 11 to 25.

“Our aspiration was to create a festival that is equally spectacular and dynamic,” said Pan Am Games creative director of arts and culture Don Shipley.

“Panamania was designed to elevate and complement the games, to provide a rare immersive experience and one that is creatively progressive, characterized by a spirit of innovation, diversity and collaboration.”

eople in one of Scarborough’s poorest neighbourhoods can spend some city money on community improvements this year, but won’t get enough for a new soccer field or water park.

Residents of Oakridge, a pocket of southwest Scarborough, last year found themselves ranked near the bottom of Toronto’s new evaluated list of city neighbourhoods.

The low ranking meant Oakridge — where 40 per cent live on what the city considers a low income — became what Toronto calls a Neighbourhood Improvement Area and, for the first time, would get direct investments to change its circumstances.

An experiment in “participatory budgeting,” or

PB, is the first real sign Oakridge, part of the riding ex-Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair wants to represent as an MP, has the city’s attention.

“No ideas get lost,” Meg Shields, a policy consultant for the city, promised last week as people entering Warden Woods Community Centre wrote down their suggestions for small city projects in the area.

Repair and replace damaged planters along Danforth Avenue, one resident’s note said. Install lighting along Cataraqui Crescent, said another.

Those ideas and others will be turned into a short list after two upcoming PB meetings – today at Oakridge Community Centre from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and on May 30 at the Warden Woods Centre from 1 to 3 p.m. – which all residents over age 14 can vote

on this fall.

But as a flyer warns and participants in the process will be told, Oakridge can only spend a total of $150,000 on projects.

That’s enough for drinking fountains ($8,000 each), planters (up to $2,500 per box) and a street mural or two, but far less than what a soccer field ($320,000) or water park ($690,000) would cost.

Michelle Berardinetti, the local councillor, is enthusiastic about PB, which she said is “like an injection into the community.”

But Berardinetti, who’s been doing her best to pay for playground renovations in her ward, said other councillors have a much easier time paying for such community projects because high-density development brings them lots of what’s called Section

37 money, which councillors are free to spend as they wish.

“Some councillors have $50 million and we have zero. It’s just grossly unfair,” she said last week.

East of Victoria Park Avenue, Oakridge is hemmed in between Taylor Massey Creek to the north and railway tracks to the south.

In 2011, only 40 per cent of its 13,497 people were born in Canada, and 2,060 spoke Bengali at home.

Berardinetti said Birch Cliff, just to the south of Oakridge, is being slowly gentrified and she hopes Oakridge won’t be far behind.

“Demographically, it’s changing quickly,” she said.

“It’s great if Oakridge can get off the list (of NIAs), because it means we did our job, but it needed to go on the list.”

Oakridge did get some help in recent years because it was across Victoria Park from Taylor Massey (also called Crescent Town), which the city treated as a “priority neighbourhood” for a decade.

The city built AccessPoint on Danforth (APOD), a community hub and health centre run by Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services, on the Scarborough side of Danforth Avenue.

City staff say a community development officer is now working in both Oakridge and Taylor Massey, helping to assess the pressing needs of both neighbourhoods.

As two of the city’s 31 NIAs, they’ll be able to draw from a $12-million Partnership Opportunities Legacy Fund passed by

Toronto council last year.

Oakridge also has one of Scarborough’s few business improvement areas, Crossroads of the Danforth, which covers the retail strip where Danforth Avenue and Danforth Road meet.

“The Danforth thinks of us as Scarborough, but Scarborough thinks of us as the Danforth,” said the BIA’s coordinator John Beers, a lifelong resident who hoped PB improvements can bring walking traffic to Oakridge’s businesses.

But Beers also saw PB as an incentive for residents to participate more in the community’s future.

“Engagement is really what we need around here, in different forms.”

Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s problems are many, and an independent task force wants to know how you might solve them.

The six-member group, led by former Toronto mayor Art Eggleton, will meet the public at 7 p.m. in the Scarborough Civic Centre rotunda on Tuesday, May 19.

TCHC is a huge landlord, sheltering 125,000 tenants, but has a growing waiting list and aging buildings requiring $2.6 billion in repairs over 10 years, a cost the city says it cannot handle on its own.

The task force has been chosen to work with experts and TCHC tenants to find out how the authority can improve its service.

If you were looking forward to hopping on the TTC’s vintage streetcar fleet this summer, get ready for some bad news.

The Presidents’ Conference Committee or PCC streetcar, was a staple of Toronto transit 60 years ago, and the TTC has kept two of the vehicles in operation for some summer holiday service, usually running on the Harbourfront 509.

But with last year’s brutal winter requiring intense maintenance of the well-pastits-prime regular streetcar fleet TTC spokesperson Brad Ross admitted on Twitter, there just wasn’t enough time to get the PCCs up and running in time for the summer.

Toronto city staff are asking the public to weigh in on plans to expand the city’s bare-bones cycling network.

Tw o m o re re f u r b i s h e d Scarborough RT cars went back into service last week.

The cars were taken out of service earlier in the year as part of the TTC’s plan to extend – yet again – the shelf life of the three-decade-old RT line until the Scarborough subway extension opens, projected for no earlier than 2023.

The vehicles are wrapped in blue and re-branded as

Line 3 in the TTC’s numberbased line hierarchy, and more changes are promised including better lighting and an improved seating configuration to provide cramped riders with some badly needed space.

PEDESTRIAN ZONE ONCE AGAIN wWithOPENS patio season well

underway, Entertainment District pedestrians will be able to enjoy a little more space on John Street.

A new pedestrian zone on John has been designated between Queen Street and Adelaide Street which includes four metres of additional sidewalk space, decorative planters and room to expand street patios.

The local BIA is touting the zone, which was also in place last year, as a way to enhance the public realm on John, as well as provide more accommodation for mobility challenged pedestrians.

The pedestrian zone is in effect until Oct. 19.

Care for yourself, then care for others: Rose Reisman Food and nutrition expert will be speaking at The Caregiver Show LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Rose Reisman’s resume boasts such titles as nutritionist, entrepreneur, author and TV personality – all of which have garnered her acclaim, yet one of her perhaps lesser known roles, but equally fulfilling, was that of caregiver.

For years, her mother suffered from dementia and Reisman, with help from her sister, cared for her on a daily basis. It was a difficult period, recalled Reisman.

“I remember feeling really anxious,” Reisman said. “I was missing out on exercise and eating well. I looked at myself in the mirror and thought, ‘I’m not taking care of myself.’”

Almost eight million people

in Canada are taking on the role of family caregiver. They are responsible for as much as 80 per cent of the needs of those living with acute or chronic health issues. It’s a job that comes with its challenges, however, there is help.

On May 30, Saint Elizabeth Health Care, at-home services for family caregivers, presents The Caregiver Show, which takes place at the Centennial College’s Progress Campus Athletics Wellness Centre. The show will provide caregivers with education, networking opportunities and resources. It is brought to Toronto residents

pist who works as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. With an independent practice, Snow has clinical appointments with Duke University’s School of Nursing and UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine.

Obesity and anxiety can be occupational hazards for caregivers, Reisman said.

“What happens is, when

you’re taking care of others, your own health fails,” she said, adding that caregivers put themselves at risk of such illnesses as heart disease and cancer. “Your immune system goes down. You’ve got to remember to eat.”

Reisman advises starting slowly, not only for caregivers, but for anyone seeking to change their eating habits for the better. Stick to Canada’s Food Guide. Try to eat three out of the four food groups at every meal. Have a piece of whole grain bread with a piece of cheese and some fruit.

“It’s that easy,” she said.

For snacks, consume two of the four food groups. Eating according to Canada’s Food Guide will provide sustenance for at least three hours.

“Sleep is really important,” Reisman added.

Reisman, who is on the committee for the Women’s Brain Health Initiative (www.

womensbrainhealth.org), which creates education programs and funds research to combat brain aging diseases that affect women, said there are particular foods one can eat to promote brain health.

Brain disease, she said, starts in our 20s.

These “brain foods” include berries, which contain the antioxidant anthocyanidin that helps fight inflammation and oxidation, dark greens, such as kale or baby kale, broccoli and brussels sprouts and fish, like salmon, which prevents inflammation that causes plaque buildup in the brain.

“The hardest thing is changing your lifestyle,” Reisman said.

She speaks from experience. She was in her early 30s, a mother of four children, and an avid runner, who thought she was healthy until a cholesterol check provided a rude awakening.

“My cholesterol levels were

off the Richter scale,” Reisman recalled.

Although she was slim, genetics were working against her. Reisman’s father and aunt had died of heart failure in their 50s. “I really had to educate myself. I started reading (food) labels,” she said. “I know a lot about food, but I read a lot. It’s been a 22-year journey.”

Reisman said convincing people healthy food could taste good, was an uphill battle. Her book, Rose Reisman Brings Home Light Cooking, was instrumental in changing people’s opinion. It sold more than 400,000 copies. In addition to her books, her show on the Life Network, Lighten Up with Rose Reisman, also helps to get her message out.

Lady Blues are tops in province The Scarborough Lady Blues Breedy U16 basketball team took the provincial title for their division during the provincial championships held earlier this month in Niagara Falls.

The players from the Scarborough Basketball Association capped their first-ever unbeaten season by taking the Ontario crown.

The Blues have competed in many tournaments, this season, including some in the United States.

At the provincial championships they played Blessed Sacrament from Hamilton in the final game and pulled off the win with a final score of 64-63.

In the last five years, three of the original members are still with the team.

Scarborough’s Simmonds, De Rosario among Pan Am Torch Relay participants Two star athletes from Scarborough will carry the Pan Am flame in the run-up to Toronto’s games this summer.

Dwayne De Rosario, the just-retired leading scorer of the Toronto FC, and Wayne Simmonds, Philadelphia Flyer and organizer of a local charity road hockey tournament, will be two of more than 3,000 participants in the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay, games organizers announced on Monday,.

The torch relay will visit more than 130 communities in Ontario and Canada.

One of its stops will be at a celebration outside Scarborough’s Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre, at Morningside Avenue and Military Trail, on Sunday, July 5.

The line on De Rosario who announced his retirement May 10 is impressive: • 2011 Major League Soccer (MLS) MVP;

• seven-time MLS allstar; • six time MLS best eleven; • all time leading scorer, Toronto FC; • all-time leading scorer, Canadian national team; • and four-time Canadian player of the year.

Asking for a show of hands from a crowd of about 200, Thompson said he saw more people in favour of the compromise than against, but it was close, and a large number didn’t raise their hands at all.

“This is our land,” declared Gillian Mason, who argued the TDSB should be stopped before it sells off public properties for short-term gain. “ We as a community should not capitulate. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

Later, Mason said she was unconvinced the city should do anything but fight the townhouse plan at the OMB, on principle.

“This may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” she said.

Thompson said he got from the board the best deal he could: one acre of DMTCI saved for a 62-space childcare facility, the area’s most significant need; a second acre for parkland, a third acre expanding the proposed new school site, and 0.6 acres more for future parkland and possible community centre, when a need for one is identified.

developers to build apartment towers in the area, he said.

John Tambling, a homeowner near Bendale BTI for 43 years, asked Thompson to do a little more.

Donwood Park Junior Public School and Edgewood Public School, both close by, are full and can’t absorb children from the DMTCI townhouses and hundreds more said to be planned for the Bendale site, said Tambling, who wanted to ask school board officials about this.

“Get the TDSB guys up here and we can fire our questions at them,” he said.

There were school board officials in the room, including an area superintendent, John Chasty, but none spoke to residents about their arguments.

Scarborough Centre MPP Brad Duguid, also in the audience, said he came to support Thompson, who he recognized is in a “tough” position.

“He’s stepped up for you in

this community,” said Duguid, a former Scarborough councillor, who also suggested residents take the deal.

“Much as it would be great to have it all, (it’s) not gonna happen.”

Some also appealed to Duguid to save the schools, arguing how the TDSB uses its land or sells its land is a provincial issue, and Duguid’s government could force the TDSB to change its plans.

Duguid disagreed.

Mark Weiser, the Midland Park Community Association president who helped start the resident campaign by forming the Greater Bendale Community Association last year, didn’t speak either.

Weiser held a meeting last week at the Scarborough Civic Centre to gauge opinions on the compromise, and before Monday’s meeting said he thought the deal represented progress for the community but expected most people wouldn’t support it.

Planning staff will report on Monday’s meeting and the DMTCI site plan application at Toronto council’s Executive Committee on May 26.

A date for the OMB hearing has not been set.

Phase in of development charges for Scarborough subway rejected DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com There will be no special phase-in of a development charge levy to raise $164 million toward the Scarborough subway, Toronto council has decided.

The development charge levy is a part of Toronto’s plan to finance its share of the $3.56 million Scarborough subway extension north and east from Kennedy station on the TTC’s line 2. City finance staff had originally proposed a 10 per cent levy on residential units and an 11 per cent levy on commercial units to raise the cash, but at the April Executive Committee meeting representatives of the development community complained there hadn’t been enough consultation.

So the committee asked staff to meet with developers and try and find a compromise. That compromise would have seen the charges

phased in this year and next, 50 per cent in 2015 and 50 per cent in 2016.

Staff said the phase-in could cost as much as $4 million, but pointed out that BILD, an association of GTA developers, could otherwise appeal the city’s entire development charge bylaw at the Ontario Municipal Board and force an overall reduction.

Councillors weren’t having any of it.

Staff was right “I think what we have to do is protect this corporation and protect our residents to the maximum amount possible,” said Deputy Mayor Glenn De Baeremaeker, who moved to reject the compromise and impose the original development charge plan. “Staff got it right the first time.”

De Baeremaeker’s motion got widespread support – including a number of councillors who have nor-

mally opposed the prosubway councillor on the decision to build a subway in Scarborough at taxpayer expense over a provinciallyfunded light rail line.

“If this subway does happen, it should be done well,” said St. Paul Councillor Josh Matlow, who added that he still hoped it did not go ahead. York West Councillor Anthony Perruzza elaborated on that point. “Everybody understands that we made a mistake,” he said. “This is a colossal waste of money for a transit project that does far less.”

Residents of West Hill’s Danzig Street will held a candlelight vigil on Tuesday to remember Suraiya Gangaram, “a beloved mother and member of the Danzig community.”

Gangaram, who was 31, was found stabbed to death in her townhouse near Morningside Avenue last Friday. A former boyfriend, Lascelles Allen, 51, has been charged with her first-degree murder.

Cash donations for her family, including Gangaram’s three daughters, will also be collected at the event, which starts at 193 Danzig Street at

9 p.m.

Sandra Damota, a member of the City of Toronto’s crisis response team, said the city doesn’t yet know of any formal trust fund or account established for the family, but added Alisha Slater, a youth outreach worker for the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club, will be collecting cash donations during Tuesday’s vigil.

On Monday, however, Ashley Gangaram, a cousin, started an online fund for Gangaram’s children at www.gofundme.com/

SuraiyaGangaram “With their mother gone and no father in the picture, the girls are now staying with a friend of Suraiya’s,” the account said, promising all donations will go into a trust fund for the girls.
