People actually want you to stop so they can take pictures,” he said. “It’s nice to poke fun and say this is the new 2014 model, they’ve gone back to the old style.”

Watterson, who started with the Scarborough Fire Department in 1990, brings the antique trucks to community events and parades throughout the city. “The best thing about the whole thing is the kids, it’s the expression on their faces.”

Watterson also looks after the Scarborough Fire Museum at 351 Birchmount Rd. Since 2002, Watterson has also been donating blood platelets every month, and in 2003 he donated his bone marrow to a father of three, allowing him to live an additional 10 years.

Three Scarborough first responders have been honoured for their good deeds, both on and off duty.

Const. Randy Arsenault of 43 Division was recognized for his social media and youth engagement work, much of it done on his own time.

“Randy started a DJ program where he teaches young people how to disc jockey,” 43 Division Supt. Mark Fenton said.

“That program has now gone across Canada ... it has gone beyond our borders.”

Arsenault has also established basketball and soccer programs in 43 Division and expanded the Music Not Mischief program, which mentors youth through music.

The constable also began a safe walk program for school kids on Mornelle Court, which had been plagued by guns and gangs.

relationships is key to success in policing,” Fenton said.

“Since Randy has started this work, 43 Division has not seen a gang or gun homicide since October 2012.”

Watterson wanted to share his medical donations in the hopes that it would encourage others to do the same.

Kemp, a paramedic for 13 years, had volunteered at a Scarborough nursing home for three years.

About six years ago, he joined the Catholic Church Seminary and became an ordained Deacon two years ago.

For the last four years he has been volunteering with the sick at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital.

The first responders received the Rotary Club of Scarborough’s Service Above Self awards during a ceremony Tuesday at the Scarboro Golf and Country Club.

“I’m honoured to get this award. I had no clue that my supervisors and peers were actually putting my name forward,” Arsenault said.

Mike Simone has been pushing for the lowering of the 60 km/h speed limit near his son’s school for the past yearand-a-half.

He’ll likely soon get his wish after Scarborough Community Council agreed to a 50 km/h speed limit on St. Clair Avenue between Birchmount Road and Herron Avenue, two blocks west of Warden Avenue. The motion goes to city council for final approval this month, and if passed, the new speed limit signs would go up by the end of July.

to St. Joachim Catholic School on St. Clair west of Birchmount, is frustrated over how long it’s taking to implement something he believes is just common sense.

“I don’t know what the issue is. What do you need to study when there’s a school zone there,” he said.

“At every other school zone, it’s 50 and 40 (km/h speed limit) in the GTA except ours.

I don’t understand it. What are they studying?”

On Feb. 12, an 18-yearold woman was struck and killed by an unmarked police vehicle while crossing St. Clair west of Warden.

Flowers still mark the spot where she was hit.

The provincial police w a t c h d o g , t h e Sp e c i a l Investigations Unit, continues to probe the collision.

Simone said he first contacted the local city councillor to voice his concerns in the spring of 2013.

He was told the speed limit would be reduced by the end that year.

Councillor Michelle Berardinetti ( Ward 35, Scarborough Southwest) said no such promise was made.

The councillor said the overwhelming request from residents was initially for traffic lights at Santamonica Boulevard, just west of St. Joachim school, and a pedestrian crossover at Pengelly

Court located across from the school.

In April 2013 traffic studies into the two proposals came back negative, meaning neither the traffic lights nor the pedestrian crossover was found to be warranted.

Berardinetti said a speed study at the time found that 95 per cent of motorists were travelling within the tolerable range, so the lowering of the speed limit was also not warranted.

“We spoke with some parents and the principal and teachers and other residents in the area about the results of all of the traffic studies that were undertaken and obviously the wish was that

something had to be done,” said Berardinetti, adding she then initiated a second speed study in October.

That study was completed in March or April 2014 and recommended that the speed limit be lowered.

“This went through the process. It was comprehensive,” the councillor said. “It’s a good news story. It’s good for the residents. They’re happy about it.”

Simone said the city should be able fast track common sense proposals.

“I think we’ve hired a collection of studiers, too many studiers and not enough action,” he said, noting the process is “just too slow to

get things done.”

Despite the conclusions of last year’s studies, Simone still wants a set of traffic lights near his son’s school.

“I’ve seen elderly grandparents trying to get kids across,” he said. “It’s a nightmare, and people are flying there.”

Berardinetti noted she has received requests for traffic lights at every single intersection along St. Clair, including her own street.

“Then on the flip side, you have people complaining because of gridlock,” she added.

These were just a few of the issues we put to provincial candidates leading up to tonight’s provincial election. So many more issues were raised throughout the campaign with those hoping to fill seats in the Ontario legislature – during debates, at your front door, or on the streets.

Health care, education, jobs, the economy – these are big ticket items that impact the entire province, but it’s the local issues like decisions at the OMB that impact a community and really makes a difference in the everyday lives of Torontonians.

After the dust settles, and another provincial government is elected, it is time for residents to continue to push on those important issues. Send letters to your newly elected or re-minted MPP, attend town halls, join a residents’ association, bring your neighbours together to fight for something important.

Do something. That way, when it’s time to head to the polls once again, you know that you’ve at least tried to make a difference.

The World Cup keeps getting better with age

I

’m really looking forward to the 2014 FIFA World Cup that starts today. I love what this prestigious tournament does for the city and with it being held in Brazil, a time zone close to ours, Toronto’s going to be hopping throughout.

TVs in sports bars, pubs, restaurants and malls will be blaring all the games.

Company water coolers will be abuzz with office pool chatter. Everywhere you go, people will be decked out in the jerseys and the colours of their favourite teams checking out the action on mobile phones, laptops and tablets.

You’ll see flags of all 32 participating countries visible on front porches, balconies, cars and trucks all over town; the honking of horns after every victory, which always sounds melodic, will last well into the night.

The preeminent showcase of the planet’s most popular sport just keeps getting bigger and better with every quadrennial.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY It’s the only major sport I never played as a kid. It flew under the radar around here back then, so I’m light years away from understanding all the nuances and subtleties of the so-called beautiful game. But I’ll get there eventually. impresses me In the meantime, I can tell you one thing about it that impresses me: the powers that be aren’t constantly messing with the game.

For other major sports, navel-gazing and tinkering have become a cottage industry. Not so in “futebol”.

The template seems to be: it is what it is. And lo and behold it works. Like a fine wine, what it is just keeps gets better with age.

They don’t sit down and rewrite the rules every year.

Fans aren’t subjected to the

incessant blabber about making the nets smaller or changing the size of the goalie’s gloves. There’s no whining about enlarging the pitch or removing lines.

Nobody jabbers about speeding up the play or making the matches shorter.

There also aren’t any heated discussions about coming up with something other than penalty kicks to decide draws after extra time.

Nor are there focus groups on the viability of yellow cards and red cards connecting with the ever-changing masses.

Like everything else, those colours are here to stay.

Football won’t be switching to teal cards to attract the kiddies any time soon.

What’s more they’ll never stop a match for five or 10 minutes while the referee phones some anonymous suits in a booth upstairs or in a head office thousands of miles away who are watching a replay entrusted with deciding whether a

striker’s cowlick was off-side before he headed in the last goooooal.

What you see is what you get with football. It’s what you’ve always gotten and it’s what you’re going to get.

Football sticks to the original blueprint. The folks in charge have decreed that the beautiful game is entertainment enough. Either you get it or you don’t.

And with a viewing audience expected to substantially topple the impressive numbers of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa – 3.2 billion in some 215 countries – and generate a staggering $4 billion or so in revenue, it’s pretty obvious the majority of the world not only get it, but they can’t get enough of it.

Ah, but enough talk. Let’s get the show on the road.

focus on highrise safety wFirefighters Toronto firefighters will be focusing on fire prevention measures in high rise buildings as part of Toronto Fire Services’ Safety Awareness Week which is now taking place.

Fire Services staff and employees with Toronto Community Housing highrise properties went door-to-door this week handing out a new highrise fire survival brochure called Fire in Your Highrise.

In the past, the campaign has focused on preventing fires in single-family homes but organizers are turning their attention this year to much taller structures.

About half of Toronto residents live in highrise buildings.

With the support of Enbridge Gas, firefighters offered free hotdogs, an inflatable fire truck, temporary tattoos, stickers and colouring books to engage youngsters during the visits. on Housing plan for orchard wMeeting

Residents of Scarborough’s Centennial community are invited Tuesday, June 17, to discuss a housing proposal for a former orchard there.

Divided by Centennial Creek,

the four-acre parcel at 222 Centennial Rd. and 35 Acheson Blvd. still has its agricultural zoning, as well as many of the apple trees and structures including a frame and stone building and a barn. The proposal would put 12 detached and 12 semidetached houses on the property, donating 1.4 acres around the creek to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

The proposal for the land at 67 Kirkdene Dr. seeks to build three two-storey semidetached homes on the heavily-treed parcel of land that is presently home to an old farmhouse.

IR Canada has purchased children’s clothing to donate to children and families in need.

There will be health awareness booths where health care professionals will provide basic health services.

Scarborough Film Festival names award winners Second annual festival featured outdoor screening at Cedar Ridge, 36 films from 26 countries Jean Ko Din jkdin@insidetoronto.com The Scarborough Film Festival wrapped up its six-day event last Sunday, honouring filmmakers from across the globe.

The big winner of the night is a Turkish film called I’m Not Him. The film was awarded with the Festival Grand Prix Feature award.

The film’s director, Tayfun Pirselimoglu, was also awarded Outstanding Directorial Achievement, alongside Austrian director Sudabeh Mortezai for her film, Macondo.

The Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography was awarded to Serbian cinematographer Dorde Arambasic for the film, The Disobedient.

A Chinese/French film titled Butter Lamp by Hu Wei was named Best Short Film with an honourable mention for Canadian film Mini Nina Mi Vida by Yan Giroux.

Festival moviegoers were also able to participate in awarding the Audience Choice Awards.

Choice feature film was awarded to Life Feels Good by Polish filmmaker Maciej Pieprzyca. Choice

short film was awarded to Last Round by Canadian filmmaker Ted Atherton.

The second annual Scarborough Film Festival welcomed more than 5,000 viewers this year and hosted a total of 36 films from more than 20 countries. The film categories ranged from narrative feature, documentary, short, experimental and world cinema. The films were

selected by the festival committee from about 500 submissions.

This year’s festival jury committee is split into two categories — feature film and short film. Both juries are comprised of leaders in Canadian entertainment and film industry.

History in action at the Scarborough museum with theatre production JEAN KO DIN jkdin@insidetoronto.com History comes alive in the Scarborough Historical Museum Sunday with a premiere of a new play from Keystone Theatre’s Young Company.

Scarborough Fever is a play inspired by the diverse cultural backgrounds of the youth volunteers in the community who come from

immigrant households.

The short play is a comment on the contrast between the parents who see Scarborough as their home and their children who want to leave home.

A young girl that comes from an immigrant family is trying to convince her mother to support her desire to leave home. So, she tells her mother a story about Mary Thompson, one of

Scarborough’s first European pioneers. artists to engage The play is supported

by Toronto Arts Council’s Animating Historic Sites program to create opportunities for artists to engage with their local museums.

“It’s been really exciting for us to engage with the community,” said Richard

Beaune, artistic director at Keystone Theatre. “I think (our work) is a good fit for Scarborough.”

Scarborough Fever will be a curtain-raiser to be performed with Keystone’s award-winning play, Gold Fever and then performed at the museum throughout the summer as a stand-alone piece.

The Keystone Theatre is known for its silent film-

inspired plays, emphasizing physical theatre in front of scenic backdrops and projected title cards. This year’s moving set pieces are created in partnership with The inPrint Collective.

Long municipal campaign good for voters Nearly six months into Toronto’s marathon mayoral race, leading candidate Olivia Chow has presented a novel idea: cut six months off the race, and let things get rolling on Canada Day. It’s nothing that we haven’t heard before. Toronto elects a mayor like nobody else, with a campaign period starting Jan. 2 and continuing until late October.

If there’s high interest in the position that year voters can be subjected to news clips, debates, op-ed pieces and now clever YouTube videos with a foot in all four seasons.

It’s expensive and daunting and sometimes a little boring.

Well, maybe not that last.

But Chow suggests it is all a bit much, that there is nothing that can be said in 10 months that can’t be said in four.

Chow does have a point. But it’s hard to say that a tiresome and lengthy debate about the future of our city is harmful.

The fact is that while the campaign period runs a year, in times of complacency – the elections before the second terms of former mayors Mel

david nickle the city Lastman and David Miller come to mind – the campaigns don’t run that long at all.

There was certainly some hand-wringing in 2006, when Miller gamely defended his mayoralty against city councillor Jane Pitfield and lawyer Stephen LeDrew, but that race didn’t start until the summer.

And in 2000, Lastman barely bothered to run a campaign, as only the late Tooker Gomberg ran against him.

But in years where the choice is less clear, our long campaign period offers advantages to voters that might be easy to overlook.

First, it allows us to meet the candidates, and the candidates to meet us.

A good mayoral candidate will start making the rounds of community groups early and often, both for the purpose of fundraising and for the purpose of building a platform. When not abused, this is

exceedingly healthy – it keeps municipal government real, in a way that other more distant governments often aren’t.

It also allows candidates who may not have the highest profiles a chance to build those, outside the extraordinary advantages of celebrity and wealth only a few can bring to the table.

Chow, for instance, entered the race with a well-established profile. John Tory entered the race a popular talk radio host with a long history in Toronto and Ontario politics. Rob Ford’s an incumbent from a wealthy family.

So it’s good to be a Chow or a Tory or even a Ford in a four-month campaign: not so much a Karen Stintz or a David Soknacki, who are stillstruggling to build their profiles.

And unless we want to limit our mayoral choices to the rich and famous, it’s not so good to be us either.

This is one issue that might be best to let lie.

In fact, only half (52 per cent) feel prepared to cope with the adverse effects of severe thunderstorms. About 38 per cent feel prepared for flooding and a mere 27 per cent feel prepared for hurricanes.

Suspect sought in sex assault Police are looking for a suspect after a woman was sexually assaulted in the McLevin Avenue and Neilson Road area Tuesday.

Police said a female was sitting on the front porch of a private residence when a male approached and sexually assaulted her around 1:30 p.m. The suspect fled when the victim yelled for help.

The suspect is described

Suspects linked to human trafficking, prostitution investigation arrested Police have charged 10 people and are looking for two others in a human trafficking and prostitution ring involving teenage girls.

“This investigation originated in 43 Division where divisional investigators discovered an alarming trend of what appeared to be young girls being exploited into prostitution,” Insp.

Joanna Beaven-Desjardins told reporters during a news conference at police headquarters Friday.

“It is alleged these victims were being forced into prostitution while under threat, physical violence, control and coercion from members associated to the local street gang known as the Galloway Boys.”

The gang operates in the Galloway and Kingston roads area of Scarborough.

Beaven-Desjardins said the victims, ages 14 to 17, were forced to work as prostitutes out of hotels and motels in the GTA and Montreal.

On Thursday, police executed 11 search warrants, arrested eight people ages 17 to 25 and seized cash, a vehicle and other evidence.

A ninth person turned himself in to police on Saturday; a tenth suspect was arrested on Sunday.

Three of the accused are women and three others are young offenders.

Beaven-Desjardins alleged several of the accused are known members of the Galloway Boys. “There are several victims...but we believe that there’s many more,” she said, adding it takes “a lot of courage for a victim to come forward.”

Some victims were once missing children. “Once located and brought back to their families in a safe environment then they feel safe to come and speak with us,” Beaven-Desjardins said.

Victims were typically recruited in their neighbourhood. “These pimps will groom them, they will build a

Toronto soccer fans can catch World Cup action across city

he World Cup begins today in Brazil, and fans across Toronto are preparing to wave their flags as they cheer on their favourite teams.

Other than being in Brazil for this year’s world championship of soccer, which runs from June 12 to July 13, Toronto is probably the best place in the world for fans to catch the action.

The weekend of June 14 and 15 will be a big one for Toronto fans, with seven games slated over the Saturday and Sunday – many of them featuring teams with large fan bases in the city.

Italy also takes on England at 6 p.m. on Saturday, which will mean an exciting night along College Street and St. Clair Avenue West. Other games this Saturday are Uruguay against Costa Rica at 3 p.m.; and Ivory Coast against Japan at 9 p.m.

On Sunday, Switzerland plays Ecuador at noon, France plays Honduras at 3 p.m. and Argentina meets Bosnia-Herzegovina at 6 p.m.

What was going on this past weekend at Scarborough Mitsubishi?

The local Car dealership at 1910 Eglinton Ave. East, on the famous Golden Mile, celebrated their 3rd annual Evopalooza Car Show and Meet this past weekend, Saturday, June 07, dubbed“Ep3.”

at new streetcars this week wSneak-peek The TTC treated transit aficionados to a sneak-peek of its new streetcars this week.

Yesterday’s ride was the first opportunity for members of the public to ride one of the sleek new vehicles that will officially launch service Aug. 31.

The TTC has ordered 200 streetcars from manufacturer Bombardier at a cost of $1.6 billion to eventually replace its existing fleet by 2019 – some of which began service more than 40 years ago.

Some streetcar stops to be removed The TTC is also planning to remove some streetcar stops on various routes starting next year.

The TTC said the stops are too close together to allow for efficient service by the newer and substantially larger streetcar vehicles.

The new streetcars, which will hold approximately double the passenger capacity of the existing fleet, will run less frequently on routes.

Relationship, which will run on all TTC subway screens in 45-second segments during World Pride, depicts a series of photographs taken by Zackary Drucker and Rhys Ernst, as they undergo non-surgical gender transitions over a five-year period.

The exhibit is an edited version of the one which showcased at the Whitney Museum in New York City.

Mill St. Brewery: changing the way people think about beer ALI RAZA scm@insidetoronto.com Mill St. Brewery’s aim is to encourage Canadians to eat and drink – organically.

“It was based on a belief of what’s going on with agriculture, business and consumer products,” said Steve Abrams, co-founder of Mill St. Brewery. “There’s a lot of crap we’re ingesting on a regular basis that’s heavily processed, and it affects everything from water to animals to the environment. It’s all interconnected.”

With a desire for change, Abrams, along with co-founders Jeff Cooper and Michael Duggan, founded Mill St. Brewery in December 2002 with its flagship beer, Mill St. Organic Lager. And now its second organic offering, 100th Meridian.

But with so many organic products in the market today, doubt was cast by beer connoisseurs about the authenticity of the “organic” nature of the beer. As another light

lager in a beer market saturated with similar choices, it was a challenge Abrams and his colleagues met.

“Some people thought it was marketing fluff,” Abrams said. “The truth is, if you’re going to try and get an accessible message to get the most number of people, you need to do it from an accessible beer, like a light lager, they’re the most popular style of beer in the world.”

When Mill St. opened 12 years ago, organic products were growing at a rate of 20 per cent annually, Abrams said. And with no other organic beers in Ontario at the time, Mill St. struck the iron while it was hot with the release of Organic Lager. Today, it accounts for 60 per cent of the brewery’s revenue.

The brewery’s Scarborough facility is where beers are brewed, bottled and shipped.

The facilities, like the ingredients, maintain the organic standard with regular certifications.

“Both our facility and ingredients are certified to Canada Organic standards by the OCIA (Organic Crop Improvement Association),” Abrams said. “In addition to processing, our ingredients are also certified organic by independent auditors.”

The equipment used and other cleaning procedures at the facility are maintained to Canada Organic standards.

The facility is audited annually to guarantee compliance with the standards.

Mill St. offers several

types of beers, including Tankhouse Ale and Coffee Porter, but Organic Lager and 100th Meridian remain their only organic offerings. “The availability of the ingredients is really the problem,” Abrams said. “Making certified organic Tankhouse would be much more of a challenge because it’s harder to source the malt we use for it.”

But the grain used for the brewery’s organic beers is grown and malted in Canada.

The process of malting

grains involves germination with water and drying the malt to halt further germination. In non-organic beers, this process is sped up to make seeds pop faster, for faster production.

And the malt Mill St. uses for its organic beers is free of pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified ingredients. The yield is smaller than conventional malt, but forms the basis of the organic beer.

“We can trace our grain from start to finish,” Abrams said.

“From the time it’s grown to the bottle, we know where it’s been. Very few breweries do that.”

Organic products have regulations under federal law. These regulations were recently introduced partially by lobbying from Mill St. Now the Canadian Food Inspecting Agency is responsible for certifying the grain as organic.

“Up until five or six years ago, there was no federally mandated organic law,” Abrams said. “We were USDA (U.S. Department of

Agriculture) certified because of that. We used their guidelines and a third-party certifier.”

As the Canadian federal government develops its organic laws, Mill St. offers help in an advising capacity.

Mill St.’s latest organic beer, 100th Meridian, was released for a consumer desire of higher alcohol content.

“100th Meridian is at five per cent alcohol,” Abrams said. “People loved Organic Lager, but wanted a slightly stronger beer, so this is our answer.”

100th Meridian is named after where it grows, the 100th Meridian line of longitude.

Toronto Public Health rolls out its West Nile Virus monitoring program LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It’s that time of year again when Toronto Public Health begins its West Nile virus education efforts while helping to reduce the risk of the disease by reducing the number of mosquitoes and testing existing ones.

The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes that become infected by feeding on an infected bird; other animals, including people, can also be infected. However, the risk of infection is low, said Dr. Howard Shapiro, associate medical officer of health and director of health environments at Toronto Public Health.

“Most people infected won’t even know,” Shapiro said during a media event in High Park last Friday. “One in five people will have a fever, headache or maybe a rash, nausea or swollen lymph nodes.”

those infected become sick enough to be hospitalized.

One in 1,000 people may die, Shapiro said.

Symptoms usually develop within two and 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. They can last from a

few days to a few weeks.

While anyone can be infected, the chances of contracting a severe illness are greater as one ages.

“The main thing is age.

There is no strict cut-off, but it seems to be 55,” said Shapiro.

One’s chances of being infected are not dependent on age, but rather one’s circumstances. Make sure doors and windows have screens, remove standing water – where mosquitoes can multiply – from your property; from dusk until dawn when mosquitoes are out in full force, wear long-sleeved, bright-coloured clothing. And always wear insect repellent, advised Shapiro.

Last year, there were 12 reported cases of West Nile virus in Toronto and one death. The worst year in the last decade was 2012, with 94 reported cases and one death.

How should we manage our remaining garbage even after reuse, recycling, and composting?

Our goal is to find solutions that are cost-effective, socially acceptable, and environmentally sustainable.

After starting a two-year-long study on what to do with leftover sewage sludge at the Highland Creek Wastewater Treatment Plan - two options are burn it or truck it away - the City of Toronto hosts its first information session for the public next Monday, June 16.

The session, in an open house format, runs from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Royal Canadian Legion’s Highland Creek branch at 45 Lawson Rd. Toronto council in 2011 decided to sell dried sludge from the Beechgrove Road plant, but residents in the nearby Manse Valley area opposed this “beneficial use”

Ontario’s environment ministry in 2012 agreed with residents the city had not followed the proper process during an environmental assessment of the plant, and council last year approved a more detailed study costing $1 million and scheduled to conclude in December 2015.

This study will consider concerns about all possible disposal methods for the plant’s waste, including “new technologies” for incineration.

The plant’s existing incinerators are considered obsolete, and changes must be made by 2020 to meet new provincial emission regulations.

Prepare ribs for grilling by removing the membrane from the underside of the ribs. Prepare several foil envelopes

and place 2 strips of ribs into each envelope, with 1/4 cup of water and seal tightly. Cook for 2 to 21/2 hours on low (300*F) with the lid closed. Check the thermometer on the front of the grill lid frequently and adjust the cooking temperature accordingly. This may require turning one or two burners off and cooking indirectly.

To prepare the sauce: Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and set aside until the ribs are ready to remove from the foil. Gently heat

the sauce on the side burner for 10 to 15 minutes before using.

Carefully remove the ribs from the foil and place on grids. Baste generously with sauce, and grill for 10 minutes per side, leaving the lid open, turning several times, and basting with sauce after each turn.

Heat remaining sauce to a boil and then allow it to simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Serve on the side as a dipping sauce.

Scarborough runner sets OFSAA record A double-gold medalist and a record setting gold medalist led Scarborough schools at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) track and field champonships held in Mississauga.

Speedster Tolulope Taiwo from R.H. King Academy pulled off the coveted sprint double by winning both the 100and 200-metre sprint events.

And Nathan Friginette from Blessed John Paul II in Scarborough set a new OFSAA record in winning the 400m event in 49.77 seconds. It broke the old mark of 50.54 set by another Toronto resident, Andre Ford-Azonwanna from North York’s Cardinal James McGuigan.

Long jump Also winning gold was Emmanuel Akingbola from Sir Wilrid Laurier Collegiate in long jump.

All the above athletes were competing in the midget boys division.

In the junior boys division, an almost perfect double haul was recorded by Edward Hayfron from Birchmount Park Collegiate who was first in 800m and second in 1500m. In those same two events, Jerome Jude from Mary Ward CSS finished second and fourth, respectively.

In the always anticipated 4x100m relay, Mary Ward CSS won the junior boys division while Birchmount Park Collegiate finished second in senior girls.

Scarborough coach gets set for netball summer games

Some people will read or hear about the game of netball and are curious and will want to come out and see what it’s all about.

Traditionally, netball hasn’t been one of Canada’s most popular pastimes, but if former national team coach Marva Johnson has her way, one day it will be.

Johnson, along with her fivemember Official Outreach Netball organizing committee, is in the final stages of organizing the third annual netball “Summer Games” at Flemingdon Park Community Centre.

This year will see an increase over the number of GTA netball teams signed on last summer.

That’s an indication, said Johnson, interest is picking up in the game and event throughout the Flemingdon Park area – where netball has been played for the last 20 years – and across the city.

“They are catching on quick.

People love it,” said Johnson, who was first introduced to the game as a youth in her native Trinidad and Tobago.

Others are aware of netball, but don’t know it’s being offered here.

This is an opportunity to bring awareness to netball, not only for the women (who have traditionally played the game), but for the men and the grassroots youth,” said Johnson, who is the event director and a Scarborough resident.

Bramalea Nets, Mississauga

Blue Stars, North York Netball Club, Redemption, Success Netball Club, Toronto Vixens, and the North York Pace Setters (men’s team) will all send teams to the event.

Youth teams Aktev Conquerors, Crescent Town Rebels Netball Club and Success Juniors will also be represented.

The basics of netball: Netball is a game with 14 players where each player is given a specific position to play a set role.

Players may not run or dribble with the ball. A game of netball is split into 4 x 15 minute quarters.

There are breaks of three minutes between the first and second and third and fourth quarters and a half-time break (between the second and third quarters) of five minutes.
