O v e r t h e p a s t y e a r, Scarborough’s five Rotary clubs have been conducting a community renewal campaign, an in-depth look at what people like about Scarborough, and how they feel it can improve.

Town halls organized by Rotarians asked important questions about what should be done to get Scarborough back to the prosperity it once enjoyed.

The clubs are preparing next Wednesday, Jan. 21, to release those ideas for improving business, health care, arts and culture, and other aspects of life here in a final report.

A

Scarborough plastic surgeon aims to empower doctors and patients in developing countries through his experience in reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Timothy Sproule works at The Scarborough Hospital, but he’s also on staff at the Rouge Valley Health System’s Centenary hospital in Scarborough and teaching hospitals in the downtown core. He specializes in cleft lip and palate surgery, burn surgery and microsurgery.

Sproule was recently in Nepal, where he was co-chair at the Resurge International South Asian Plastic Surgery Conference for two weeks in October/November.

“This was the third time I’ve been to Nepal,” Sproule said.

“I donated a piece of equipment that’s really useful for burn surgery called a dermatome. It was very effectively utilized there.

They are now approaching full developed world standards of potential care.”

Sproule has visited Nepal on several occasions, imparting his expertise in training doctors and performing surgeries.

Equipment and education In his 28-year career, he’s been to Ecuador, Bangladesh, Vietnam, India, Guyana, Nepal and Bolivia.

After years of performing surgeries in high-need areas, Sproule shifted his focus on educating doctors in the countries he has visited and providing them with the equipment they need.

Developing nations like Nepal and Bangladesh have very little resources available to address their health care needs.

When Sproule first visited Bangladesh, the country had one plastic surgeon for more than 100 million people. In contrast, there are 40 plastic surgeons in the City of Toronto alone.

While patients of cleft lip and palate surgeries can be cared for after their surgeries by local communities, patients of burn surgery and microsurgery require ongoing care.

But the Internet isn’t enough, as inaccessibility or low bandwidth is a common problem in developing countries.

In search of a solution, Sproule started his own charity called the Canadian Reconstructive Surgery Foundation. With the charity he hopes to disperse more sophisticated equipment for use in burn surgery and microsurgery.

“My focus is doing fundraising to purchase reconstructive surgery equipment,” he said.

“I have a kit that I call a burn unit in a box, it’s a set of instrumentation that is quite compact.

I can donate the entire kit to a

worthy group of doctors capable of doing surgeries...I want to take them to needy places and provide them to local groups. I’ve done that once in Nepal.”

The charity is aligned with Sproule’s objective of “educating and empowering” doctors and communities in developing countries.

His work has given him the realization of how fortunate Canada is with its current health care system.

“I have the benefit of knowing what it’s like to work in places where they are scarce in resources and overwhelming in need,” he said.

“It’s given me an appreciation of our own system. We’re much better off than most other places in the world.”

The Scarborough Hospital is asking again for the public’s help in planning its future.

On Wednesday, Jan. 28, it will ask for opinions it says are important to the hospital’s strategic plan.

The meeting is at the G e n e ra l c a m p u s, 3 0 5 0 Lawrence Ave. E, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. when residents will hear about “draft strategic directions and goals that have been developed to date,” CEO Robert Biron said.

A planning exercise by the hospital two years ago proposed changes in the hospital’s programs, some of which were shelved after being examined by an independent expert panel. The hospital then studied a possible merger with the Rouge Valley Health System, which was called off last March.

Organizations often need to adapt to better serve communities

O

rganizations grow. Sometimes they shrink.

But they have to evolve to remain relevant and cost-effective. In the case of United Way Toronto, sometimes they merge with another organization – the United Way of York Region.

That’s one example of charitable merger aiming to have the whole of the two parts better serve the people of the region.

We think it’s worthwhile for smaller, communitybased organizations to look around at like-minded groups, or others competing for the same charitable dollar and see if they can serve their community better through merger or at least a partnership.

Some questions to ask: Is the organization meeting its stated goals? Is the organization having the community impact it desires? Is there overlap or duplication of effort happening with another organization?

Is it a struggle to find members our view to do the volunteer work or to sit on oversight boards? Can admincosts be reduced? Could Merger can istrative fresh ideas surface when two groups work together? help better These are just a few of the quesorganizations tions that can provide healthy introspection.

Think about it. If an organization finds there are certain challenges that are increasingly difficult to overcome, why wouldn’t they explore different ways of approaching those challenges by reaching out to other organizations and considering ways they can join forces?

It doesn’t have to be an outright merger. An informal partnership can go a long way toward helping both parties out.

For example, perhaps the opportunity exists for the pooling of resources, which can help streamline costs, avoid duplication and ensure the efforts of the volunteer base are deployed as efficiently as possible.

The opportunities that can be created are intriguing: knowledge-sharing, new ideas, an energized volunteer base. All contribute to the combined strength of a collective whole.

The keys to any successful partnership – however formal it may be – are the ability to incorporate the unique needs of the component parts to create a whole that’s better equipped to face the challenges of the day. o?”

That was the question of the day I was greeted with whenever I bumped into somebody I knew last week. It started Tuesday on the way to work. The first to ask it was the guy behind the window at my regular subway station.

“So?” Much to his relief, my response was an affirmative nod. Up next was the girl behind the counter at My Regular Morning Coffee Stop (no, not its real name).

She gave me my usual double double. (Not its real name either. It is, in fact, a quintuple quintuple. But please don’t tell my nutritionist.)

“So?” Much to her relief, I gave her an affirmative nod, too. Then came the couple who run The We’re Talking Extremely Convenient Store Considering It’s Just Across The Food Court From My Regular Morning Coffee Stop (yes, it’s real

“So?” I answered the same way as before, with said affirmative nod. Following them was Ted, whom I hadn’t seen since before the holidays. I bumped into him in the elevator on the way to the office and he had the similar query.

“So?” Yet another affirmative nod from me. This was followed by a volley of encounters with co-workers in rapid succession: Tiffany in the hallway, then Alan by the water cooler and finally Frank inside the office.

“So? “So?” “So?” All were greeted with affirmative nods and that’s pretty much what took place in all my encounters with people I know last week. For those who’ve

never met me and are wondering that the heck “So?” means exactly, it’s short for “So, are you going to finally admit that it actually IS cold today?”

How could I not admit it?

It was cold that day. It was cold a few days last week.

Not like it gets in Manitoba, Alberta or Newfoundland, but cold for these parts.

Especially early in the morning and late at night walking into that swirling wind.

But this whole “So?” business started with me because complaining that it’s cold year-round has become a veritable cottage industry in Toronto and when others say it’s cold in August, which is when the grumbling starts in earnest, I never agree.

Nor do I agree in the fall. I don’t agree in winter unless it actually is cold. Now, I realize for people new to Canada from warmer climates, any cooler weather can be a shock to the system,

but the majority of the moaning seems to come from people who have spent most of their lives in Toronto.

Soooo, now that I’ve admitted it does, indeed, get cold here OCCASIONALLY I’ve decided to turn the “So?” tables back on everybody else with my own spin, when it is not.

First up was my neighbour Al, whom I bumped into Sunday when we got a welcome break from the recent tougher conditions.

“So?” I asked him. As in, “So, are you finally going to admit it ISN’T cold today? Nor all those other times you were whining that it was back in August, September, October, et al?

Eh, Al?” He growled.

I took that as a “yes.”

our ambulances waiting and three occupied stretchers in Hallway 5: it’s a pretty average afternoon at Rouge Valley Centenary’s emergency department.

During the Christmas period, as many as 11 ambulances at a time stood outside the doors as department staff strained to deal with one of the worst flu seasons Chris Jones has seen.

The hospital opened 40 unbudgeted beds, says Jones, Centenary’s acute services program director.

“If there were more physical beds, I couldn’t staff them.

I’m out of staff.”

Scarborough’s regional health authority, the Central East LHIN, last month endorsed the first stage of a “pre-capital submission” for renovations to the department, which reached its patient capacity

a long time ago.

Like a lot of hospital spaces in Scarborough, the Centenary emerg at Neilson and Ellesmere roads hasn’t aged well.

Its size, about 12,000 square feet, is considered far too small, and its design is obsolete.

Jones, who joined the staff in 1999 and can remember late nights when the department was empty, said growth and an aging community now push annual patient visits past 66,000 a year for a facility built, when it opened in 1984, to handle 30,000.

That number may be too generous: documents sent to Ontario’s health ministry a year ago by both Rouge Valley Health System and The Scarborough Hospital say Centenary’s department was built for 20,000 visits a year.

The documents – asking the ministry to start planning entirely new hospital facilities in Scarborough

and West Durham Region – draw on a study of the two hospitals’ proposed merger.

The study cited frequent crowding at the Centenary emerg, patients in corridors, and “very poor and congested” flow of people in and out of the department.

“There is no separation of walk-in traffic from ambulance traffic. Triage is inadequate with only one triage station and there is no patient privacy,” the study’s final report concluded.

Hallway 5 is just a place, marked by a paper sign, where nurses keep patients when there’s no treatment space available.

On Friday, a woman on one of the stretchers is wheeled into the observation unit next door, filling the last of 11 treatment spots there.

The woman’s place in the hallway is taken by another patient in minutes, but observation, at least, offers

some privacy – curtains on the cubicles here can be pulled back.

“These rooms are constantly in use,” Jones said.

Darlene Pereira, a registered nurse at Centenary for 30 years, happens by, and is frank with Jones about what the increasing volumes and the department’s inadequate design have done to patient care.

Pereira, who wore several colourful pieces of flair around her stethoscope, said leaving patients in hallways is unacceptable.

“We use the fracture clinic at night (to handle the overflow) and we have to wheel them out at 6:30 (a.m.),” she said.

The department’s ambulatory care area – where all treatment chairs and spots were full and one patient was getting a blood transfusion – “should be little things like a cut finger or a sprained ankle,” but now receives patients with chest pain and other “major”

cases, Pereira said.

The department also lacks security – people get lost and walk in – patients must be washed, but there’s no shower, and there aren’t enough supplies on hand, she added.

Dedicated mental health and crisis rooms were added some years ago, and the ambulatory unit was modified to move more patients through the department, Jones said, but as numbers grow, it gets harder to match expected times for treatment on which the ministry bases some funding for RVHS. Jones knows Centenary applied to the province for money to build a new emerg even before the hospital’s merger with Ajax and Pickering General Hospital in 1998 to form RVHS. But for him and other department staff, the decision by the LHIN – the Local Health Integration Network – to start planning for renovations is a recognition

something must be done.

Before their own merger was called off a year ago, Scarborough’s two current hospitals went further in their appeals to the province, suggesting entirely new facilities should be considered, since maintaining three Scarborough hospital campuses over two decades would cost $1 billion, plus $500 million for redevelopments the ministry had already approved.

The province hasn’t, however, agreed to fund planning of future hospital facilities in the area, and David Brazeau, a RVHS spokesperson, said any decisions on that are years away.

“And in the meantime, we have this need now. We’re maxing out what we can do around here,” Brazeau said in the Centenary emergency department on Friday.

Zoo stresses conservation as gorilla Nneka turns one ALI RAZA araza@insidetoronto.com

he Toronto Zoo celebrated the first birthday of its youngest gorilla last week.

Nneka turned one on Saturday and though celebrations took place last weekend, they started earlier in the week with Nneka and her mother, Ngozi, opening their first presents – food wrapped up in boxes.

Nneka is the second offspring of gorillas Ngozi and silverback male Charles, who been with the zoo since it opened 40 years ago. During the Jan. 6 celebration, zookeeper Ali Vella-Irving stressed the importance of gorilla conservation and the zoo’s work in Toronto and in Africa.

“Nneka’s birthday is significant because gorillas are becoming extinct in the wild,” she said. “It’s estimated that by 2025, there will be no gorillas left in the

Western lowland gorillas, those kept at the Toronto Zoo, are among several subspecies of gorillas that are critically endangered.

Gorillas like Nneka, Ngozi and Charles exist in the wild with numbers from 30,000 to 100,000. But other gorilla subspecies exist in extremely low numbers; there are 200 to 300 cross river gorillas and 600 to 800 mountain gorillas in the

Standing in the frigid air beside the building, shuttered since its last tenant, an autodetailing business, closed in May 2011, Peers admired the large doors.

The realtor says it’s 65,000 square feet, he said.

“Because it was a mechanic’s garage it has a great power supply,” added Peers, a graduate student of town and country planning who wrote reports for the Scarborough “Renewal Campaign” the area’s Rotary clubs launched last year.

“There’s really room in the back for different groups, were they to be partners in this space, to maintain their own spot.”

Later, Peers, who wants to build miniature heritage houses in the garage for a project of his own, said he hopes the nearby University of Toronto Scarborough, and Centennial College, whose Morningside campus is not far away, can be part of The Workshop.

The space, he said, can have a different schedule each week, hosting meetings and serving as a drop-in studio to residents, entrepreneurs and students willing to pay for a membership. “This works on people’s timelines, not on professors’ timelines.”

With two or three tenants, plus some supporters and other partners, Peers said, The Workshop could have enough money to open by June.

O v e r c o f f e e a t Te d’s Restaurant, Peers, who moved to Highland Creek recently, said the neighbourhood’s place at the southeastern corner of Scarborough offers competitive advantages.

After two years in which community members fought to keep out anything above a low-rise height, Toronto Council passed a village secondary plan, but since then not much in the 24-acre area has changed.

One three-and-four storey building has gone up, but a park space known as the “Village Green” and street improvements residents wanted haven’t materialized.

Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser said he hopes to see the village’s revival speed up once a transportation study that may realign local roads and street parking, now underway, is done. Moeser also said he looks forward to meeting with Peers about his proposed fabrication hub.

Making lemonade from lemons Playing opposition at City Council is delicate work.

With no official party system and in its place a coalition of disparate interests in orbit of a – usually – popular mayor, it’s tough to get traction.

Contrarian councillors outside that orbit are left to find ways to get their ideas in front of the public.

The pitfalls are many.

During the David Miller era, right-of-centre councillors stumbled around for years before forming a coalition called The Responsible Government Group that tried with scant success to critique the mayor’s agenda.

Councillors on the left took a different approach with Mayor Rob Ford in 2010, taking the give-him-rope-tohang-himself tack until finally, he did so.

It’s clear neither approach is going to work with sober, steady old John Tory – who has an ambitious agenda and the resolve to keep potential opposition away from committees that might affect that agenda.

david nickle the city And so it is that on Monday, progressive councillors adopted another strategy: if the mayor gives you lemons, make lemonade.

The lemons Tory gave Gord Perks, Mike Layton, Sarah Doucette, Joe Cressy and Maria Augimeri were seats on the Parks and Environment Committee: a committee historically known for light agendas and little influence.

That will likely not be the case this term. As of Monday, the committee has a subcommittee: the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Subcommittee. Chairing it will be Perks, who has had a long career as an environmental advocate. Also on the committee are Doucette, Layton and Cressy.

The subcommittee will begin holding public meetings promptly, to talk about ways in which the city can move into a leadership role

in battling climate change, worldwide. Following from that, the subcommittee will likely bring recommendations to the Parks and Environment Committee – which, owing to its membership, will send those recommendations to council – into Tory’s lap.

It will be awkward: climate change mitigation can be expensive, and politically challenging, as it enters into areas where Torontonians are divided: everything from green energy programs to anti-car initiatives and the dreaded “bag tax” from the Miller era.

One courting the support from Ford Nation will have a hard time backing much of that agenda.

But failing to back some of that agenda will play just as badly with the centre-left and pure centre voters, for a mayor hoping to maintain a broad base of support.

It will be interesting to see how this uniquely passive act of aggression plays out.

Man had built fire to keep warm: police >>>from page 1 makeshift hut...that someone used to keep warm from the cold,” he said. “When they extinguished the fire, they realized that there was someone inside who had died.”

Toronto Police Const. Victor Kwong said officers found a man at the scene who told them that he and the deceased are both “semi-homeless” and “they live in separate huts” located beside each other.

“They had built a fire to keep warm,” said Kwong, adding the deceased’s hut caught fire.

The second man left to get help when the fire started.

The fire marshal’s office is investigating the incident. Police don’t suspect foul play.

On Jan. 26, 2013, a 52-year-old homeless man burned to death after using a propane burner to heat a metal container he used as a makeshift home at Wexford Park in Scarborough. The man somehow set himself on fire and managed to escape the container. A passing traffic officer used a fire extinguisher on the still-burning body but couldn’t save the man.

Neither of the stolen vehicles was high end. One was a Pontiac Vibe while the other was a pickup truck with a snow plow on the front.

Centre for Veterans Care is appealing to the community for help as it raises funds for a much-needed roof repair to the facility, which opened in 1976.

Located on Lawson Road, the centre provides long-term care services.

An estimate for repairs to the roof came in at about $138,000, and the work is desperately needed according to officials at the centre.

Time is also critical as past a certain point next year, repairs will not be effective and the entire roof will need to be replaced at a cost almost four times as much as the repairs.

Toronto and York Region United Way groups merge CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com The newly announced merger between the Toronto and York Region United Way organizations will translate into a greater potential for impact, according to United Way Toronto’s president and CEO. In an interview with Metroland Media Toronto on Friday, Susan McIsaac said the decision to join forces with United Way York Region came after widespread public consultation regarding the charity’s strategic plan over the last year.

“We probably engaged over 2,000 people in asking key questions around the priority of the city and what really mattered, etc,” she said.

“And much of that consultation actually informed the decision that we took to pursue this conversation with York Region. That, for us, was really an important and an informative process.”

As talks began with York Region last fall to possibly unify under one umbrella, McIsaac said she quietly reached out to “key partners, community leaders, agency leaders and key stakeholders” to seek their feedback – conversations she said were “hugely helpful and, frankly, very positive.”

“We heard very positive feedback, because, I think, there’s a notion that there’s unbelievable alignment between our organizations: alignment on mission and alignment on priorities,” she said.

The final decision to merge the two United Ways was announced Friday, following a special meeting late Wednesday evening in which the boards for each organization voted unanimously in favour of the union.

Road work hours could be extended to all night Policy revision would help ease traffic jams DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The hammering of road work could be going on through the night on some city projects if council approves a new policy to speed up traffic-snarling construction.

The policy, which was recommended at the Jan. 6 Public Works and Infrastructure Committee meeting, will mean that in certain cases – and at a price premium – contractors will toil around the clock to make sure that the project is finished as quickly as possible.

The policy comes after Mayor John Tory announced that the city would pay that premium to have work finished on this phase of the Gardiner Expressway rehabilitation.

Under the proposed policy, work could continue 24 hours a day, seven days a week on expressways and major roads where the work is far from residential neighbourhoods and non-disruptive to TTC operations.

Work could also be done overnight, but not during daylight hours on major roads far from residential neighbourhoods, so that roads could stay open for regular commuting times.

As well, work hours could be extended on major roads between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. Monday to Saturday and local roads between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Bendale community fighting development plan for Thomson Collegiate lands MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Residents from Scarborough’s Bendale area are determined, through a winter campaign of lawn signs, letter-writing and a Family Day “play in,” to save at least part of the school lands they love.

But their chances of success look slim.

Toronto’s public school board put the aging Bendale Business and Technical Institute and David and Mary Thomson Collegiate Institute – properties totalling 28 acres northeast of Midland and Lawrence avenues – on the block.

Residents, promised a new replacement school, seemed to reach a compromise with board representatives last year on townhouse plans for the Bendale site.

That was before they heard Thomson, which they thought would be used as a high school by an area French

school board, would instead be sold as a site for more townhouses.

The Toronto District School Board then responded to an attempt by Scarborough Community Council to stop the Bendale sale by appealing to the Ontario Municipal Board.

As members of the Greater Bendale Advocacy Team met last Thursday, however, they showed no sign of giving up their fight for green spaces on the properties.

“As taxpayers in the area, this is ours,” Mark Weiser, president of the Midland Park Community Association, told about 75 people at Scarborough Civic Centre.

“The one thing that’s going to stop the wheels from turning is public outcry.”

Weiser, GBAT’s principal spokesperson, said area homeowners only agreed to a development plan for the Bendale property because they understood Thomson

wasn’t in play.

The TDSB has said the French board withdrew its bid for Thomson “due to lack of provincial approval,” and that the public board never actually told residents the sale had gone through.

Weiser and scores of people at last week’s meeting, including the local councillor, Michael Thompson, disagree.

“I believe my own ears,” said Thompson, who asked for a show of hands to confirm what residents who met representatives of the TDSB at Bendale had heard.

“I know that’s what they told us. We didn’t make that up,” he said.

The Scarborough Centre councillor said he hoped his community council motion, tying fresh consultations to site-plan approval for the Bendale plan, would get the board talking to residents again. It didn’t.

“You’d think an institution

owned by the people would be able to afford a discussion,” said Thompson, calling the board’s behaviour consistent with how it treats surplus land sales across the city.

He added he’s looking for a way to carve out some land from the deal – at $1.8million an acre, since the board demands market value – where the city could build a community centre.

Thompson – who’s been accused by some of holding up the replacement secondary school – didn’t guarantee to the residents the city would back their position at the OMB, a quasi-judicial body that decides cases on their planning merits.

That means GBAT, which can’t afford to fight the school board at the OMB directly, must rely on a public campaign to force the board to add community benefits to the development plan.

Weiser said residents’ letters will target not just the

board but Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and the local Liberal MPP, Brad Duguid, since they are “responsible” for regulations requiring a quick sale of the school lands.

The campaign will culminate in an event on the school fields on Family Day, Feb. 16.

Local public school trustee David Smith was singled out for criticism at last week’s meeting. Weiser and others said Smith hasn’t answered questions from residents about the school sales.

In a newsletter posted to his trustee website last summer – his most recent online message on the subject – Smith lauded the results of residents’ suggestions on the Bendale lands.

“It was your community that asked to have more single family dwellings instead of townhouses in the limited space, and as a result of your input, the architect

redesigned the entire area and brought back a better plan which was deemed to be more acceptable,” wrote the trustee, also announcing construction of the new school could begin as early as last August and be completed

by September 2016.

Smith did not respond to requests for comment last week or this week.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the school board, Shari Schwartz-Maltz, said the board is planning a meeting this month, “to update the community on the project and seek feedback from the community.”

By press time, however, she wasn’t able to say where or when that meeting would be.

Both schools are still open but are in rough shape, said Schwartz-Maltz.

Rave deaths prompt Crime Stoppers to post YouTube warning video ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Toronto Crime Stoppers has jumped on the cooking show bandwagon.

They released a video called Cooking with Molly, and while it may have humourous overtones, the message is very serious.

Toronto Crime Stoppers co-ordinator Det. Chris Scherk said Cooking with Molly was made in response to last summer’s “rave tragedy” in which two young adults died after consuming an unknown narcotic pill they likely believed was ecstasy, which goes by the street name Molly.

“Molly isn’t made in a pharmaceutical company.

It’s made in basements, garages and on the streets,” Scherk told reporters at police headquarters Friday.

“We’re hoping that this is a video that will resonate with youth and young adults. Truly, you don’t always know that what

engagement campaign that will run in schools this spring.

“The campaign will

feature encouraging social responsibility at the high school level and encouraging youth to use Crime

Stoppers as an alternative to remaining silent,” Scherk said.

Toronto Crime Stoppers fielded 8,740 tips in 2014, resulting in 90 arrests, the laying of 300 charges and the seizure of drugs worth more than $3 million.

“Crime Stoppers tips were responsible for solving homicides, robberies, break-and-enters, severe child abuse cases, and a previously unknown Internet child-luring predator was arrested,” Scherk said.

“It’s a partnership between the police, the public and the media. We can’t do it without the public, so I thank them for making those tips.”

Toronto Crime Stoppers began in 1984, and since then the program has received 116,155 tips resulting in 10,725 arrests, 36,416 charges and more than $305 million of drugs seized.

Crime Stoppers takes tips on crime and turns

them over to police anonymously. “We extend informer privilege so that the information provided by our tipsters qualifies for protection afforded by the Supreme Court of Canada under case law,” Scherk said.

“Information that results in an arrest may qualify you for a reward. A process is in place that allows us to provide you that reward (while) never having to provide your name or meet with Crime Stoppers in person.”

Crime Stoppers is a charity run by a civilian board of directors independent of police though police provide officers to staff the office on a secondment basis.

Toronto council will be hearing a lot more about climate change mitigation over the next few years, after the city’s Parks and Environment Committee approved creating a subcommittee to study and make recommendations on the issue.

Both those committees held extensive public meetings where residents, activists and lobbyists were able to make deputations. And both subcommittees reported through the community council and eventually to

council itself.

The subcommittee looking into action on climate change will operate in a similar way, on the “much more important issue of climate change,” said Perks.

Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton put the motion forward at the committee.

He said the subcommittee would deal with the “possibly earth-changing” issue of

climate change in depth, and allow the parks committee to concentrate on other areas of its mandate.

“Parks are a huge issue – people care about their parks, they’re passionate – they will fill this room when the tree bylaw comes through,” he said.

Union closures expected wFurther

The TTC wasted no time at all scheduling its first construction-related subway closure for 2015.

The closure, which took place last weekend from Union to St. Andrew stations, is the first of a series planned between now and March to put the finishing touches on the TTC’s $137 million top-to-bottom renovation of Union Station in time for the 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games.

Part of the remaining work includes installing a 152-metre wall dividing the Union and Yonge platforms made up of glass panels adorned with art.

Residents curious about the progress of Scarborough subway extension planning will have an opportunity to hear from city staff at a pair of community meetings scheduled for the project.

The plan has received attention of late with calls

RELEASES RIDE results wOPP

There wasn’t much change compared to last year in the number of impaired driving charges laid by the OPP during the holidays.

The OPP’s annual holiday RIDE crackdown, which took place from Nov. 24 to Jan. 2, resulted in 593 impaired driving charges for Ontario motorists compared to 587 during the 2013-14 holiday period. This time around, one person was killed because of impaired driving compared to three in the previous year.

While impaired driving charges have dropped significantly, the OPP said it was still disappointed by the holiday findings.

HELPS BIKE NETWORK GROW wCONTEST

Winners were recently announced for a contest organized by the city to promote its mobile app used to log the frequency and distance of trips made on bicycle.

Since it was launched last May, the Toronto Cycling App has recorded over 65,000 trips made throughout the city, giving cycling planners a better idea where Toronto’s bike network could be strengthened in the future.

As part of the contest, prizes were given to users of the app ranging from memberships to Bike Share Toronto to the grand prize: a new bike worth $700. The app is available for download for Android and the iPhone.

To continue to build on our relationships and develop new opportunities for collaboration and service delivery, we are hosting a second Community Engagement Session on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The first session, which was held in October, helped to inform the hospital’s strategic planning process. In this second session, participants will be introduced to the draft strategic directions and goals that have been developed to date and will have the opportunity to discuss and provide feedback. A high-level summary of the session that took place in October will also be provided to participants.

f you want a murder solved in a creative and unusual way, there is no better person for the case than Sherlock Holmes.

Scarborough Players put on an outstanding production of The Incredible Murder of Cardinal Tosca by Alden Nowlan and Walter

Learning. It stars the infamous detective Sherlock, his trusted friend Watson and arch nemesis Dr. James Moriarty.

It’s 1895, London, England, and after a creepy opening scene of Satanists almost murdering a man seemingly gone mad, the same man, Father Chidiock Tichborne (Darren Klingenberg), is later found

dead by his own hand.

However, suicide doesn’t sit right with his sister, Miss Violet Tichborne (Lindsay Bryan) who, accompanied

by Inspector Hopkins (David Elliot Dickie), pays Sherlock Holmes (Chip Thompson) and Dr. John Watson (Chris Hardess) a visit so he can help them find the truth.

STUDY OVERVIEW The City of Toronto’s City Planning Division, together with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), is beginning to plan an extension of the Bloor-Danforth Subway (Line 2) from Kennedy Station to Sheppard Avenue. The Scarborough Subway Extension will replace the aging Scarborough RT and allow for a seamless journey for transit users by eliminating the need to transfer at Kennedy Station. This subway extension will provide convenient connections with local and regional bus services, other rapid transit planned for the area, and for customers walking and cycling to or being dropped off at the planned stations.

WHAT’S NEXT? Our review will follow the requirements of an Ontario Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP). The first stage of this work – the Scarborough Subway Extension Project Assessment Study – will recommend a preferred alignment (i.e., route) and station locations for the Scarborough Subway Extension, and will identify benefits and any potential impacts to the natural environment or the community.

And on this day, she gets more strangeness than usual with the arrival of Charlie the Rat Catcher (Joe Frans), the masked man, Colonel Dashwood (John Pirker), and doctor evil himself, Moriarty (Jeremy Henson).

Holmes, who solves cases by sheer logic and no emotion, is intrigued by the Cardinal’s suicide and immediately realizes nothing is as it seems. This cardinal’s death is, in fact, attached to a more dastardly and complex plan that if executed would threaten all of Europe.

What ensues is a case that entails more murder, characters that have dual identities, shocking scenes and some amazing performances as the case unravels and the truth is exposed.

The acting in this show is fantastic. It’s like watching a movie as the action is seamless.

Thompson as Sherlock Holmes gives a believable and enjoyable performance as a man who is the pinnacle of logic. He is always one step ahead of everyone else, never giving anything away.

The villains in this show are convincing and entertaining.

Henson has an amazing stage presence and plays his role effortlessly. Pirker as Colonel Dashwood plays his role with an amazing intensity and madness as indicative of his characters mindset.

There is a slew of amazing characters in this show, each contributing to the story in their own unique way.

Especially for Frans as Charlie the Rat Catcher and Bryan as the delicate sister in mourning, Violet. Both have secrets and their duality gives the show colour

and intrigue.

A special mention goes to Lindsay Bryan who plays both Mrs. Hudson and Mother Midnight; she stepped into the roles days before opening and performed amazingly.

Hats off to all those who had a hand in creating the sets, especially in the creation of Moriarty’s lair.

The underground electrical room, complete with an electric chair, high-voltage components and plasma balls, is a fantastic compliment to the show.

Whether or not you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes, this play is enjoyable because of the calibre of the performance, amazing characters, and the storyline that has intriguing twists and turns. up next for Scarborough players wComing

Goose acquires local site wCanada Outdoor clothing maker Canada Goose announced this week that it has acquired the assets of Scarboroughb a s e d G r a n d Ha r b o u r Clothing Inc., which includes a 45,000-square-foot facility on Commander Boulevard.

The site will become Canada Goose’s second manufacturing campus in the Greater Toronto Area and will add 70 employees to the company.
